Everything Aircraft

From the Editor . . . . Bob Landry Greetings all, hope you all had a super Christmas and spirited New Years break. Well it’s back to work and from what the powers that be seem to be saying is that “better times are just ahead”. Let’s hope so, we in Canada and the US of A are sure in need something better. Anything better. Now we have airport scanners that will be able to see you in birth-day suit, and to think some people got in trouble at work watching naughty videos on their computers. Now some of us have to loose weight for better profile. Until next time, fly safe . . . B.L.

Aviation Humor? What's the difference between God and pilots? God doesn't think he's a pilot This one was heard while flying in Holland, tower is talking to a female helicopter pilot.. "What's your altitude?" "1000 feet" "What's your heading?" "175" "What's your speed?" "150 knots" "What's your bra size?" "36B........AAAHHHHH SHHIIIITTTTT" Tower: "...and for your information, you were slightly to the left of the centerline on that approach." Speedbird: "That's correct; and, my First Officer was slightly to the right" The only thing worse than a captain who never flew as a copilot is a copilot who once was a captain. Questions via the radio should not always be answered exactly. Tower: Aircraft in holding pattern, say fuelstate? Aircraft: Fuelstate Tower: Say again? Aircraft: Again.... After this the tower controller switches off his radio and climbs down the stairs to drink coffee the rest of the afternoon. Shortly after just landing at a big international airport in his Cessna 150, our hero strolls into the busy airport cafeteria for a bite to eat. He finds an empty table by the window to keep an eye on the airport comings and goings. Shortly thereafter, a striking woman walks up and asks to share his table. Naturally, he invites her to sit down. After several minutes of small talk, the woman asks if he is a pilot. He responds, "Why, yes, I am -- I fly a C-150." Knowing next to nothing about airplanes, she asks him what a C-150 is. The pilot looks out the window and spots a C-130 Hercules taxing out for takeoff. Pointing to it, he tells his companion, "See that plane over there? That is a C-130. I fly a C-150!" The student in his primary trainer was flying a solo cross-country. He lost his way and before he finally ran out of fuel he decided to put it down on a road. With hardly any cars on the road he managed to coast his aircraft into a gas station and said to the attendant, "Fill 'er up!" The attendant just looked at the pilot. "I bet you don't get too many airplanes asking for a refuel," said the pilot. The attendant replied: "True, but most pilots use that airport over there."

Cessna Pilot Centers Gain FAA 141 Approval for New Training Course

W

ICHITA, Kan., Dec. 14, 2009 - Cessna Aircraft Company, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, today recognized four Cessna Pilot Centers as the first training schools to gain approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) Part 141 to use Cessna’s new Sport/Private Pilot Course in their private pilot certificate training programs. The Cessna Pilot Centers gaining Part 141 approval are: Air Fleet Training Systems Inc., Fairfield, N.J.; Snohomish Flying Service, Snohomish, Wash.; Trade Winds Aviation (dba for Skyworks Inc.), San Jose, Calif.; and Pensacola Aviation Center, Pensacola, Fla. Many other Cessna Pilot Centers are also in the approval process to add the course to their training programs.

Cessna developed the new Sport/Private Pilot Course in association with King Schools of San Diego and released it to Cessna Pilot Centers in September after qualifying it for FAR Part 141 approval. The course is now the foundation of Cessna’s Flight Training System offered by the global CPC network.

for the Skycatcher.

The major advantages of the Cessna Flight Training System are that it’s Web-based for maximum customer flexibility, and it incorporates customizable scenarios for maximum instructor flexibility.

As previously announced, Rose Pelton, wife of Cessna Chairman, President and CEO Jack J. Pelton, received the first Skycatcher.

The Web-based system keeps track of every aspect of customer training and they can access training materials from any location where they have access to the Internet. And since the program is Webbased, changes and updates can be made instantly, with no replacement materials to distribute.

The Model 162 Skycatcher is a two-place, singleengine piston, high-wing aircraft in the Light Sport Aircraft category, defined in the United States as an aircraft with a maximum gross weight of 1,320 pounds and with a top speed of no more than 120 knots.

The Cessna Flight Training System also allows an instructor to customize the program to meet the requirements of the local training environment while not compromising the integrity of the training system.

The 162 is powered by a Continental O-200D 100hp air-cooled engine and a fixed-pitch propeller. The aircraft will cruise at speeds up to 118 knots and will have a maximum range of 470 nautical miles. The Cessna 162 Skycatcher features a Garmin G300 avionics system. Information is presented in a single, split-screen primary flight display (PFD) and multi-function display (MFD), or as two full-screen displays with an optional second screen. The Skycatcher will be capable of Visual Flight Rules/Day/Night operations.

O

ctober 29, 2009, Sandpoint, ID…Quest Aircraft Company has received Canadian type certification for the Quest KODIAK. This follows the receipt of type certification from Papua New Guinea (PNG) and type acceptance certification from Indonesia in June.

“From the outset, we had planned on receiving numerous international certifications for the KODIAK,” said Paul Schaller, Quest Aircraft’s President and CEO. “The airplane was purposely designed for the mission/humanitarian community, which by definition means extensive usage in the most remote regions around the world. Our customer base for other market segments is worldwide in nature as well. “Canada is also a prime market for us, as the KODIAK is the perfect platform for a variety of mission profiles flown in remote areas,” Schaller continued. “With this certification in-hand, Canada now has a true solid replacement for the venerable Beaver.” The PNG certification was obtained in conjunction with JAARS, one of the Quest Mission Team (QMT) members. Their first KODIAK, s/n 008, was delivered in January and is currently in-service operating in the most remote areas of PNG. Indonesian certification was achieved through the efforts of the FAA and Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), another QMT partner. “With KODIAKs now entering service in different parts of the globe, we expect interest to continue to Everything Aircraft

The KODIAK can take off in under 700 feet at full gross takeoff weight of 6,750 lbs and climb at over 1,500 feet per minute. A 3-panel Garmin G1000 integrated avionics suite is standard equipment on the KODIAK. Quest also offers Synthetic Vision Technology for the G1000. The KODIAK’s rugged aluminum construction combines superior STOL performance and high useful load. It offers proven turbine reliability with the Pratt & Whitney PT6 turbine engine, is capable of working off floats without structural upgrades and has the ability to land on unimproved surfaces. Quest received full unrestricted production certification for the KODIAK on September 15. The production certificate allows Quest to streamline the production and delivery process over time, as they assume responsibility for inspections and coordinate changes with the FAA’s Seattle Manufacturing Inspection District Office (MIDO). As the delivery schedule accelerates, more KODIAKs will be delivered for use outside the United States both for commercial users and mission/humanitarian organizations. Quest Aircraft Company, LLC is the manufacturer of the KODIAK, a 10-place single engine turboprop utility airplane, designed for STOL use and float capability. Headquartered in Sandpoint, Idaho, Quest was established in 2001 and employs over 300 people. The company began customer deliveries of the KODIAK in December 2007. Liberty Enters into Agreement with Wilksch Airmotive for Testing and Certification of the WAM Turbo Diesel Engine --- Released JULY 30th, 2009 --- Retro Release

M

elbourne, Florida USA (July 30, 2009) Liberty Aerospace, Inc. unveiled at Oshkosh, the first XL2 fitted with the Wilksch Turbo Diesel. The aircraft, which burns Jet A fuel, is designed to appeal to the fast growing international market place where 100LL is both expensive and hard to obtain. “Our international customers have been very clear to us,” commented Keith Markley, President & CEO of Liberty Aerospace, Inc., “They need an alterative fuel to the 100LL for aircraft they are running in their flight training fleets. We know as a fact that many school operators have elected to come to the US for this show to specifically discuss this aircraft and their requirements with us, and we are extremely encouraged by our test market sampling. With Wilksch now being under the leadership of Mike Newton, Founder and CEO of the CCTV and video technology specialists AD Group, we believe we have a development partner who has the expertise and financial capability to get us to market quickly.” About Liberty Aerospace, Inc. Based in Florida’s Space Coast, Liberty Aerospace, Inc. designs and manufactures and General Aviation Aircraft and is the FAA Type 23 Certificate holder for the Liberty XL2. The XL2 aircraft is IFR certified and meets the specific requirements of flying schools and clubs while offering the private owner/operator a first-class touring aircraft. Well-known for its carbon fiber fuselage and modular construction, it is the first production aircraft powered by a piston engine equipped with full authority digital engine control (FADEC), simplifying power management and providing greatly increased levels of safety, reliability and maintainability. These technological advances have allowed Liberty to deliver an aircraft benefiting from incredibly low operating costs, while remaining extremely fun to fly. About Wilksch Airmotive. Wilksch Airmotive (WAM), formed in 1994, in the UK, has focused it's design team on combining new technologies and packaging with a 2-stroke "diesel" (C.I.) operating cycle. Because the concept uses a robust four stroke style multi-valve cylinder head, valve timing can be optimized allowing a turbocharger to provide scavenging and boost over the whole power range. Use of the 2-stroke cycle allows high power outputs to be achieved without the need for a reduction drive. The technology has little in common with conventional 2stroke engines, no roller bearings and no crank-case compression or oil-fuel mixing. WAM engines achieve a power/weight that matches or betters traditional Avgas burning 4-stroke engines. Another South American Airline to Operate Bombardier CRJ900 Aircraft

HASA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — China will set a new record for the world’s highest airport with an airport planned at an altitude of 4,436 meters, the regional civil aviation director announced Tuesday. Xu Bo, director of the Tibetan Branch of the China Civil Aviation Administration, said the airport, planned for Nagqu Prefecture, would be 102 meters higher than Bamda Airport in Tibet’s Qamdo Prefecture, which has been the world’s highest airport since its December 17, 2009 completion in 1994.

ombardier Aerospace today welcomed Andes Líneas Aéreas of Salta, Argentina as another South American airline to select the Bombardier CRJ900 jetliner as the best aircraft to suit its requirements. The airline has leased two previously owned 90seat CRJ900 aircraft to expand its fleet and reach out to new markets for both its scheduled and charter services. Founded in 2006, Andes Líneas Aéreas currently operates three larger jetliners and flies to Salta, Buenos Aires, Puerto Madryn, Jujuy, Córdoba and Puerto Iguazú. The airline also provides charter services, primarily to Brazil. File photo shows an aircraft landing on the Gongkhar Airport in Lhasa, capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The Five Things You Need to Do Before Renewing Your Aviation Insurance

I

f you’re like most owners and pilots, you simply renew your aviation insurance policy every year. If it was good enough last year it will be good enough this year. Then you probably don’t give it another thought until next year. And this pattern often repeats itself for many years. There are two very big problems with this scenario. First, things change. Your aircraft, where you fly, who you fly with, how much you fly…many of these things can change over the years, and they should be reflected in your policy. Second, and even more serious, it is quite possible that your policy wasn’t the right one for you to begin with! In that situation, you are simply renewing your mistake year after year. In either case, your aviation insurance policy deserves a little bit of your time once a year. Here are the five things you should do to make sure you are adequately protected. 1. Choose Your Broker When you insure your home or your business, a broker can choose from dozens and dozens of insurance companies. As a result, shopping around with a few brokers can make sense. Chances are, they may not even approach the same companies for your quote. In the case of aviation insurance, however, there are only four or five companies in Canada to choose from and even fewer that specialize in light aircraft. Obviously, it doesn’t matter how many brokers you go to, the odds are that they will be approaching the very same companies on your behalf. This can actually be a serious disadvantage for you, as some companies will simply refuse to quote in these circumstances in order to avoid the feeding frenzy that can result when a number of brokers vie for the same account. So, as you can see, choosing your broker is the first step. But how do you choose? And are there any alternatives to a broker? Let’s look at alternatives first. The only alternatives to a broker are the direct sellers (like Avemco) and special programs (like COPA’s). In these cases you are dealing with a salesperson who can only offer you the one product they represent. As a result, these options tend to be promoted on the basis of cheap rates—but like “bargains” anywhere, they do so by cutting coverage and often leaving you seriously underinsured. If you really want to know what they can offer you, check them out. But before you make your decision, be sure to talk to a broker who works for you and not any one company. So how do you choose the right broker? Start by finding an aviation specialist. Although any general insurance broker can sell you aviation insurance, they simply do not have the experience or familiarity with the field to be your best choice. Even more importantly, they usually can’t get you the best rates. As an aviation specialist, I deal with the companies and underwriters every single day. I get to know them personally and I place a lot of business with them. Now compare that to the average general insurance broker who maybe places one or two policies a year with that company. Who do you think will get you the better results? Finally, make sure that you are comfortable with the broker you choose. Just because someone specializes in aviation insurance doesn’t automatically mean they are good. Do they take the time to ask you questions, get to know your needs, and fully explain things to you in a way you can understand? If they do—congratulations, you’ve found your broker! They will probably ask you to sign a “Letter of Brokerage” which will let insurance companies know that you have in fact appointed them to be your broker. Then you can move on to the other four steps below. 2. Confirm the Value of Your Aircraft Neglecting to keep up with the market value of your aircraft is one of the most common renewal mistakes. If you do this year after year, you could be in for a rude awakening. Aircraft values have soared in recent years, with many doubling in price over the last decade. Unlike home or auto insurance, aviation insurance is a “stated value” policy. ne of the neatest of the rare ‘Golden Age’ high wing monoplanes was, and is, the single engine Stinson Detroiter. Introduced by master aviator Edward A. “Eddie” Stinson, the initial production model SM-1D “Detroiter” (preceded by prototype SB-1) built by the Stinson Aircraft Syndicate of Detroit Michigan, first flew January 25, 1926. Developed as a six-seat closed cabin aircraft for passengers or freight, and endowed with such extras as cabin heating, individual wheel brakes, and an electric starter for the nose-mounted 220hp Wright J-5 Whirlwind engine, this early “Detroiter” soon had broad appeal with the local business community. Consequently, Stinson was able to secure sufficient capitalization to incorporate and move on to greater successes. Numerous variants followed to be used by a variety of commercial operators including Braniff Air Lines and Northwest AirwaysThe popular “Detroiter” proved an exceptional transport, and in early 1928 a smaller version was designed for private aviators. This SM-2 Junior was likewise a strut-braced high wing monoplane with a shorter fuselage and shorter span wings, but had a sturdy outrigger undercarriage that was braced against the wing support struts. A 110hp Warner Scarab engine provided the go power. First flown in mid 1928, deliveries would begin later that year. Further versions would follow which progressed to the heavier and more powerful SM-7 and SM-8 four-seat models.

All of the Stinson Junior examples were built between 1928 and 1933 and quickly snapped up by well-to-do private flyers and business executives. To this end the SM-8A Detroiter Junior was the considered leader of the pack. Unveiled at the Detroit Aircraft Show in April 1930, the Stinson Aircraft Company apparently received more orders than ever, selling an unbelievable 347 units, that included the identical 1931 ”S” model. And furthermore, Stinson evidently sold more of these Junior Detroiter’s in those two years than the rest of the industry combined. Today, according to respected opinion, the venerable SM-8A, powered by a Lycoming R-680, 215hp engine, is the quintessential antique airplane; classic in its style, roomy comfort, great range, useful load, economical to operate, easy to handle, low maintenance and rugged. Pictured herewith is a Stinson SM-8A Detroiter Junior, NC469Y, at a Merced, CA West Coast Antique Fly-In event.

CESSNA 206 STATIONAIR & TURBO STATIONAIR The sport-utility Stationair. Ease back on the yoke and 300 fuel-injected horses leap off the runway, climbing at speeds approaching 988 feet per minute (5.1 m/s). Level off, trim up and fly at a 142 knots (263 km/hr) max cruise - which you command from your plush-leather seat. For extra-long trips, the Stationair can stay aloft for nearly seven hours at long-range cruise settings. No wonder it's the flexible favorite of freight haulers, law enforcers and business leaders. Not to mention pilots counting on the day-in, day-out ability to transport the entire family and more. Whatever your line of work or play, we've got your high-performer right here. Model Comparison

The Skyhawk SP, 350 Corvalis and 400 Corvalis TT, and all Skylane and Stationair models come standard with the Garmin GFC 700 fully integrated flight control system. With innovative features including airspeed hold, overspeed protection, pitch hold and coupled VNAV, the GFC 700 provides precise lateral and vertical guidance and capabilities formerly available only on the most sophisticated business jets. Every component of this state-ofthe-art system is designed to provide maximum safety, reliability and situational awareness.

This pilot-pleaser features a 300-bhp Lycoming IO-540-AC1A5 powerplant harnessed to a McCauley three-bladed constant speed prop for increased performance. The net results? A max speed of 151 knots (280 km/hr), a max cruise speed of 142 knots (263 km/hr) and a 988 fpm (301 mpm) rate of climb. The Stationair can also range 594 nautical miles (1,100 km) and reach altitudes as high as 15,700 feet (4,785 m).

The spacious cargo area of the Stationair allows for 127 cubic feet (3.6 m3) of capacity, while the double doors allow for easier loading.

FAA Certifies Lycoming IO390-A3A6 Engine and Second Lycoming Echelon STC Engine Now Available to Mooney M20E, M20F and M20J Owners Williamsport, PA - November 16, 2009 Lycoming Engines, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, recently received Federal Aviation Administration type and production certification for its IO-390-A3A6 engine, quickly followed by an FAA supplemental type certificate (STC), the second STC earned as part of Lycoming’s Echelon STC program. The IO-390-A3A6 provides more horsepower as well as improved climb and cruise performance, while maintaining the same footprint as the IO-360 engine. The STC covers replacing the original IO-360 Lycoming engine in the Mooney M20E, M20F and M20J with a new or remanufactured IO-390A3A6 engine. Like the first Echelon STC developed for the Cessna 177 RG Cardinal, this STC improves performance and adds value to the airframe. “Lycoming’s new-engine certification and Echelon STC programs are a key way we show our commitment to legacy aircraft,” says Dennis Racine, Lycoming director of marketing and program management. “Mooney owners now enjoy another option when it is time for an overhaul.” The STC includes either a new or rebuilt IO390-A3A6, Slick Start System and required documentation. In addition, Hartzell has certified both two-blade and three-blade propellers for the STC. It will be offered exclusively through Lycoming Authorized Service Centers. For information on the closest Lycoming Authorized Service Center, call 800-258-3279 and ask for Michele Demarest, Authorized Service Center Administrator or send email to Everything Aircraft

1st AmphibCub Delivered By American Legend SULPHUR SPRINGS, TEXAS, JANUARY 12, 2010 – American Legend Aircraft Company announced today the first customer delivery of a Legend AmphibCub—an amphibious floatequipped Legend Cub certified as a light-sport aircraft. The AmphibCub was completed and delivered to a customer in South Florida where the aircraft presently resides.

Taking delivery of the first Legend AmphibCub was Dick Parsons. Dick is a retired commercial airline pilot, husband, father, friend, adventurer, purveyor of fine living, part-time snow-bird and nature-lover, dog rescuer, and a long-time Legend Cub fan. Dick is a traveled man. He has flown over 700 hours in the Legend Cub, a considerable sum in three years, and a fraction of the number of hours he has logged in heavies on transcontinental routes. Until recently, Dick made all of his landings exclusively on tires and terra firma. As a new owner of the first Legend AmphibCub, Dick now enjoys water landings. With the other 71-percent of Earth’s surface being water, this affords countless new opportunities. The new AmphibCub by American Legend is based on a J3-style version of the Legend Cub. It is configured with amphibious aluminum floats from supplier Baumann Floats of New Richmond, Wisconsin. The Amphibious Legend Float Cub is a certified light-sport aircraft that meets the category’s seaplane requirements with a simple, repositionable landing gear. One of Legend AmphibCub owner Dick Parson’s favorite spots to visit is the Florida Keys. The two play well together, sea life and seaplane, and Dick and his AmphibCub. With water as a mode of transportation here, the Keys feature more runways Everything Aircraft

than all the major hub airports combined, and a comparatively scant amount of traffic. Dick also enjoys flying further up the Gulf Coast where he has access to private lakes and a delightful salt dome island. Another favorite spot Dick frequents in his Cub is the far northeasterly state of Maine. Here he enjoys flying the mountains and seashores. “You can’t get there from here,” an often used phrase among Mainers, is not something Dick pays much heed to. In his Legend AmphibCub, Dick can always fly there from here… land or sea. Darin Hart, owner of American Legend Aircraft Company and designer of the Legend AmphibCub, stated, “The new amphibious Legend Cub is a special configuration and we’ve worked hard to ensure it fulfills sport pilot needs. The AmphibCub comes with Baumann BF 1500A amphibious floats, Garmin avionics, vortex generators, position/strobe lighting, and a lightweight finish system.” Hart continued, “Much of the emphasis was on meeting weight requirements. Empty weight is 998 lbs.; this gives you a 432 lb. useful load. American Legend is proud to be the market leader, again, by putting its certified light-sport aircraft on amphibious floats. The Legend AmphibCub opens up a new world of flying with both ground and water landing options.” The Amphibious Legend FloatCub sells for $159,000. The Legend Cub has held top spot as the best selling American-made light-sport aircraft since its introduction in 2005. Completely modern in its design, materials, and available options, the Legend Cub blends the best in history with the best of today. In a Legend Cub, it’s possible to fly low, fly safely, and fly for fun. The Legend AmphibCub will be on display at U.S. Sport Aviation Expo at Sebring Regional Airport, Florida, from January 21–24, 2010. Contact American Legend to schedule a demonstration flight. For further information, contact American Legend Aircraft Company at 1810 Piper Lane, Sulphur Springs, Texas, 75483; call 903-885-7000; or log on to www.legend.aero. Says Sergey Antsiferov, Vityaz Avia general manager, “we are thrilled to be the first Twin Otter operator in Russia, and are excited to work with Viking to tap into this huge market opportunity.” Viking in the Final Phase of Certification Effort While Adding to Twin Otter Series 400 Order Book

(Victoria, BC, October 19, 2009): Viking Series 400 Twin Otter certification work has entered the final phase towards the goal of achieving Transport Canada and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification, expected in the next 90 days. Primary activities are focused on completing final checkout configurations for this versatile aircraft, which due to the unique nature of Twin Otter operations, encompasses functionality for standard landplane, tundra tire, ski plane, float plane, and amphibian. The Primus Apex’s flexible architecture supports the aircraft’s unsurpassed capability with a comprehensive software package. This will provide each customer with the ability to select the configuration suited for their specialized operating environment, further increasing the aircraft’s versatility. Noise testing to FAR36 has been completed on landplane gear and amphibious floats. .The aircraft is also undergoing hot temperature testing to validate hardware performance in extreme temperatures. Over the coming weeks legacy Twin Otter pilots will be exposed to the new systems to validate Viking’s training programs prior to customer deliveries taking place. While certification work continues, production is well advanced with seven aircraft in various stages of final assembly at Viking’s Calgary, Alberta facility. In Victoria, major sub assembly components are in work for the next set of six aircraft, in line with the projected build rate of twelve aircraft scheduled for 2010. As the aircraft start lining up in anticipation of delivery, the order book continues to grow. Vityaz Avia Corporation of Moscow is the newest Twin Otter Series 400 customer, purchasing two of the commuter configured aircraft for use in Russia. Vityaz will be the first Twin Otter operator in the country, and will also act on behalf of Viking as the Series 400 Sales Representative within the region. Everything Aircraft

Also adding to the growing Series 400 order book is Petro Air, a commercial organization developed exclusively to handle aviation requirements for the oil and gas industry in Libya. Petro have signed up for a single commuter Series 400 aircraft to add to their fleet of nine legacy Twin Otters, along with a full training and support package. “Aside from the minor changes in our certification schedule,” noted Robert Mauracher, Viking vice president business development, “we are confident with our product, and so too are our customers, as reflected by an increasing order book in the face of the current economic climate.” He added, “The certification aircraft is performing flawlessly and will be worked hard over the coming weeks as we near our goals.” Viking provides OEM support for the worldwide fleet of de Havilland heritage line of aircraft (DHC-1 through DHC-7), and is part of Westerkirk Capital Inc., a Canadian private investment firm with substantial holdings in the hospitality, aviation and real estate sectors.

Bell P-39 Airacobra

E

mployed by the U.S. Army Air Force and used in larger numbers by the Soviet Air Force, the single-seat, single-engined Airacobra, although rated by some as one of the more graceful and advanced airplanes of its day, was not only unconventional but unique in many ways. Besides having a “car-door” cockpit access, the P-39 was the first fighter plane ever to have an engine installed centerline behind and below the pilot, primarily to accommodate placement of a 37-mm., T-9 cannon into the nose to be fired through the propeller hub. The propeller, in this regard, was driven by a 10 foot transmission shaft from the engine that ran under the pilot seat to a reduction gearbox located in the nose. Having the power plant near the airplane’s center of gravity also gave the P-39 added maneuverability, and required a forward tricycle (fully retractable) landing gear, the first of it’s kind among WW II fighter planes. Additional firepower included two 0.50 calibre machine guns in the nose, synchronized to fire past the propeller, plus four 0.30 cal. machine guns in the outer wings, along with a bomb load of 500 lbs. The early P-39s had a wingspan of 34 feet, weighed in at 8,200 lbs., capable of a maximum speed of 368 m.p.h. at 13,800 ft. with a range of 800 miles. Initially powered by a 1150 hp. Allison V-171035, 12-cylinder Vee liquid-cooled engine, the Airacobra became one of the most controversial war planes produced in the United States during World War II. Designed and built by the Bell Aircraft Corporation, a prototype XP-39 first flew on 6 April 1938. After a series of major modifications, requested by the military, including the elimination of the exhaust-gas supercharger that would later inhibit the aircraft’s high altitude ability, mainline production began in August 1939, and continued until July 1944 by which time 9,584 units had been manufactured in nine main variants. Although the airframe remained much the same on all versions there were upgrades and changes, mainly to engines and propellers, to improve their offerings for combat missions. Principal users were Britain (RAF), France (Free French), Soviet Union, and the United States (AAF). Originally intended to fill a role of high altitude interceptor the P-39 Airacobra fell somewhat short of expectations, in both Europe and the Pacific, largely attributable to engine performance problems at high altitude. The British Royal Air Force took delivery of 675 of the first major production variant P-39D in July 1941, which they had ordered the previous year. It wasn’t long before the RAF realized that the airplane was unsuitable for their combat operations against German aircraft over Europe. Of the P-39s received only one squadron (601) flew them operationally. Over 250 were then transferred to Russia as part of an aid program, another 200 or so were reassigned to the United States Army Air Force units in Britain, and a further 200, or thereabouts were returned to America and designated as P-400s. The Airacobra entered service with the USAAF early in 1941, making its combat debut in the Pacific the following year, but it did not perform well against the agile Japanese Zero. However, once the limitations of the airplane were fully recognized, the P39 proved to be a rugged and excellent assault and tactical support weapon, especially for the Russians who used it effectively for ground strafing and as a low altitude fighter. The Soviet Union received roughly half of all Airacobras built together with the lion’s share of the Kingcobra line. A Lend-Lease agreement, spanning September 1942 to September 1945, paved the way for delivery of American built warplanes to the Soviet Union over the Alaska - Siberia Air Route. Ferry aircraft and supplies were staged from Great Falls Montana to airfield route points in Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and Alaska to the primary destination of Ladd Field, at Fairbanks, a distance of just under 2,000 statute miles. Thereafter, Russian ferry crews took over for the duration journey into the Soviet Union via Nome Alaska and the Bering Strait. A total of 4,746 lend-lease P-39s were allotted to the Soviet Union. Of these, 2,618 P-39 Airacobra’s traveled the Northern Route as did a complement of 2,397 lend-lease P-63 Kingcobra’s. However, the task of ferry pilots was hazardous work, largely attributable to weather and mechanical troubles leading to numerous accident casualties along the route, said to have claimed one in four aircraft not counting the scores of airmen. The P-63 Kingcobra was a larger and more powerful variant of the Airacobra which rolled off assembly lines in 1944. 3,303 examples, all types, were produced from which roughly two-thirds were transferred to the Soviets and to Free French units. Although more adept at high altitude than its predecessors the Kingcobra was used almost exclusively as a ground-attack fighter. Those retained by the USAAF were used only for training and target work as the plane was not favored for combat duties. Story and Photo By: Ed Anderson Everything Aircraft

favorite spots to visit is the Florida Keys. The two play well together, sea life and seaplane, and Dick and his AmphibCub. With water as a mode of transportation here, the Keys feature more runways than all the major hub airports combined, and a comparatively scant amount of traffic. Dick also enjoys flying further up the Gulf Coast where he has access to private lakes and a delightful salt dome island.

1st AmphibCub Delivered By American Legend

S

Another favorite spot Dick frequents in his Cub is the far northeasterly state of Maine. Here he enjoys flying the mountains and seashores. “You can’t get there from here,” an often-used phrase among Mainers, is not something Dick pays much heed to. In his Legend AmphibCub, Dick can always fly there from here… land or sea.

ULPHUR SPRINGS, TEXAS, JANUARY 12, 2010 – American Legend Aircraft Company announced today the first customer delivery of a Legend AmphibCub—an amphibious float-equipped Legend Cub certified as a lightsport aircraft. The AmphibCub was completed and delivered to a customer in South Florida where the aircraft presently resides.

Darin Hart, owner of American Legend Aircraft

The Amphibious Legend FloatCub is a certified light-sport aircraft that meets the category’s seaplane requirements with a simple, repositionable landing gear. One of Legend AmphibCub owner Dick Parson’s Everything Aircraft

Company and designer of the Legend AmphibCub, stated, “The new amphibious Legend Cub is a special configuration and we’ve worked hard to ensure it fulfills sport pilot needs. AIRCRAFT EXTERIOR 10/10 Aircraft is new.

10/10 Aircraft is new.

9/10 Paint is new. Airframe and paint are in excellent condition with no scratches or dents.

9/10 Interior is new. There are no scratches, cracks, crazing or other evidence of use.

8/10 Paint and airframe are in near new condition. Minor scratches (shallow, short and less than 1 or 2 per square foot) are detectable only on close inspection (inspecting aircraft while standing at less than an arms' length from it). Paint on often-used fasteners and screws may be chipped.

8/10 Interior is in near new condition. Any smell, dirt or matting can be removed by simple cleaning. Some evidence of use can be found only on close inspection.

7/10 Paint has high gloss. Small number (less than 3 or 4 per square foot) of scratches are apparent, mostly on leading edges due to abrasion. Close inspection reveals only a few small dents or chips (less than 1 or 2 per square foot). Windows are clear with no crazing or discoloring. 6/10 Paint is shiny. Several small scratches, chips or dents (4 to 6 per square foot) can be found, mostly around high use areas (fuel caps, doors, struts). Some crazing or small stress cracks (less than 2 or 3 hairline cracks per square foot) are visible in plastic and fiberglass structures. Several windows may be milky at edges. 5/10 Paint is sound (no corrosion apparent). Slight oxidation can easily be polished out, leaving paint shiny again. Two or three small areas (rounded corner of cowling, part of leading edge) of crazing can be found in paint. Paint on leading edges is rough from abrasion. Touched up or repaired areas may be seen on close inspection. Small number (3 or 4 per square foot) of short cracks can be found in fiberglass wingtips and cowlings due to normal wear or hangar rash. Cowling seals are faded. Many (less than half) windows have milky edges. Several windows may be crazed or lightly scratched. Aircraft looks attractive to most people during walk-around. 4/10 Paint is generally sound. Small areas require special attention (touch up or repair by trained individual) due to oxidation, peeling, chipping, corrosion or crazing. Paint is dull in many (less than half) areas. Most windows are crazed and scratched. 3/10 Paint is not shiny and has peeled in many areas. Most leading edges and upper surfaces are crazed and oxidized. Moderate number (5 or 6 per square foot) of chips, cracks or dents can be found. All window surfaces are scratched. Even after touch-up and polishing, aircraft still looks unsightly. 2/10 Aircraft looks terrible. Paint is badly oxidized, peeled and blemished. It is well beyond the touch-up and polish stage. Corrosion, dents and cracks require extensive work. 1/10 Exterior is so full of corrosion, heavy dents or tears that it will not pass an annual inspection without repairs.

Everything Aircraft

7/10 A small amount of wear is apparent. Small, shallow scratches and/or stains (1 or 2 per seat) can be found on seats, carpet or woodwork. Stain remover and shampoo removes almost all stains. Headliner is clean with no stains. There are no nicks in woodwork. 6/10 Headliner may have a couple of dirty spots that can be removed almost completely with cleaning. Matting in high use areas does not vacuum out completely. Steaming or shampooing improves interior considerably, but a couple of small, limited areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) remain looking worn or stained. No frayed or torn fabric is apparent. Leather, vinyl or woodwork has no cracks, but small scratches or creases (4 to 6 per seat) are obvious. Seats and drawers operate smoothly. Scratches in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior still looks attractive when cleaned thoroughly. 5/10 High use areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) still look worn (fibers appear shorter than surrounding carpet) after thorough shampooing. Headliner may have several stains but is not torn. Minor (2 or 3 instances per seat) fraying, staining or cracking is apparent on less than half of the seats. Small nicks are visible in woodwork. About one-third of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior can be made to look clean, but it lacks sparkle in many areas. 4/10 Scratches, stains and frayed fabric are seen on most seats. More than half of the leather or vinyl seats may have small cracks. Carpet is matted along aisle. Carpet also has numerous stains, snags or other irregularities. Interior has two or three tears. About half of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Wood laminates may be peeling slightly. Several cracks in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior cannot be made to look clean or smell fresh. 3/10 Tears, snags and stains are clearly visible in many areas. Several cigarette burns can be found. Most seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior looks and smells dirty even after cleaning. 2/10 Cracks, stains, tears and snags are the norm. Many seats have exposed foam. Interior is dirty and foul-smelling even after thorough cleaning. 1/10 Interior is so dirty and worn that most people would be hesitant about sitting down for fear of damaging clothing.

June 3rd, 2009 Retro Release

“FLYING CAR” SOARS THROUGH FLIGHT TESTING Transition® Roadable Aircraft Moves on to Next Stage of Development Woburn, MA – June 3, 2009: Terrafugia, Inc. has successfully completed the flight testing program designed for its Transition® Roadable Aircraft Proof of Concept. Having been dubbed “The Flying Car”, the Transition® completed its historic first flight on March 5, 2009 with 27 additional flights completed over the next several weeks. The successful completion of flight-testing with the Proof of Concept concludes the first stage of a four stage process to bring the Transition® into production. Work is underway on Stage 2, the Beta Prototype. First delivery is expected in 2011. The Proof of Concept vehicle is the first and only Transition® to be built thus far. It has now achieved its goals by demonstrating driving, flying, and automated transformation between the two in one integrated aircraft. The flights conducted a plan set specifically for the Transition®: characteristics such as handling, performance, and takeoff and landing, stability and stall were evaluated. B-Roll footage is available of representative flights. The flight-testing program demonstrated the safety of the vehicle in the air while identifying modifications that will be incorporated into the next Transition® model to be built, the Beta Prototype. Test Pilot Colonel (Retired) Phil Meteer had a positive review of flying the POC: “I would like to keep flying this Proof of Concept vehicle, but it makes sense to move on to the Beta Prototype.” Categorized as a Light Sport Aircraft, the Transition® requires a Sport Pilot certificate to fly. It is a two-seat aircraft designed to take off and land at local airports and drive on any road. Transforming from plane to car takes the pilot less than 30 seconds. The Transition® will cruise up to 450 miles at over 115 mph, will drive at highway speeds on the road, and fits in a standard household garage. The vehicle has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight. Both modes are powered by unleaded automotive gasoline. By giving pilots a convenient ground transportation option, the Transition® reduces the cost, inconvenience, and weather sensitivity of personal aviation. It also increases safety by incorporating automotive crash structures and allowing pilots to drive under bad weather. Refundable airframe reservations are currently being accepted. Terrafugia (ter-ra-FOO-gee-ah), based in Woburn, MA, is comprised of a team of award-winning engineers who have been advancing the state of personal aircraft since 2006. The exclusive Nickel+Carbide™ bore coating for corrosion and wear resistance is a standard feature and TITAN cylinders have an enhanced head/barrel joint for maximum durability. ECi President Glen Golden says, “Experimental engine builders now have the ability to create higher horsepower engines with factory new cylinders at a terrific price. ECi is pleased to offer the TITAN EXP Angle Valve cylinder as an alternative to a certified OEM cylinder and we are proud to continue making products that feature great value and reliability.”

Everything Aircraft

Welcome and Introduction Since 1943, ECi has been a proud participant in the segment of aviation dealing with piston powered aircraft. With roots dating back to WWII when ECi was known as Pennington Channelcromium Co., the Army Air Force and the Navy relied on the corrosion and wear properties of chromium plated cylinder barrels produced by PCC. Although chromium plating was considered state of the art 60 years ago, ECi has over the intervening years moved on to new plating technology as well as other innovative and high quality repair processes for all major components of a certificated aircraft piston engine. While maintaining a strong focus on repairs, a recent change in business strategy has also brought ECi to the forefront of the PMA business. Emphasizing quality products at a price that the market is willing to pay, ECi has set out to support the independent rebuilder with products and services that meet the highest standards for safety and reliability. ECi has a corporate commitment to being a world class designer and manufacturer of aircraft engine parts as is evidenced by the certification of its Quality Management System to the ISO 9001:2000 international standard and AS9100 aerospace standard. This certification is held by few manufacturers in general aviation because it requires an effort that not all businesses are willing to put forth for the benefit of their customers. We recognize that our future rests in the hands of the thousands of people that maintain and rebuild piston engines; a future that looks very bright to all of the employees at ECi.

That means that the owner is responsible for declaring the value of the insured aircraft. If you undervalue your plane, you risk losing it after even a minor accident. As I have explained many times in this column, the “stated value” is the maximum the insurance company will pay out—and they will keep the plane as salvage.

So whether you have simply neglected to increase the value on your policy at renewal time or have tried to save a few bucks on the premium by insuring for a lower amount you are taking a very big gamble. Make sure you resolve this issue at your next renewal. 3. Review Your Liability Make sure your policy doesn’t have passenger or family member restrictions. This is the most common way that companies offer “bargain” policies. It is also the most common way owners lose everything they own when courts award large injury settlements that are not covered by their “bargain” policy. I regularly see people with limits of only $100,000 per person. You’d never consider such a low amount for your home or auto insurance, so why allow it on your aviation policy? With the high court settlements being awarded today, one to two million dollars should be the least you consider. 4. Get the Right Coverage for Your Needs At every renewal, you should discuss your flying habits with your broker. Many companies have territorial restrictions to the U.S. or to the north, and some have restrictions for dirt or grass landing strips. Make sure your policy covers the kind of flying you do. If you have made—or are planning to make—any upgrades or changes to the configuration of your aircraft, you may need to make some adjustments to your policy. Otherwise, you may find yourself out of luck in case of an accident. 5. Protect Your Interests Finally, you should discuss any other unusual circumstances regarding your aircraft. You may need to arrange for special coverage to protect your interests. One common example I run into is an owner who has his aircraft on lease to a flying school or commercial operator. If the lessee commits an illegal act or omission, your aviation policy could be nullified. In these situations, you should obtain “Breach of Warranty” coverage which will pay a lien holder’s interest despite the policy being otherwise invalidated. Following these simple steps once a year at renewal time is an easy way to make sure that your aviation insurance policy continues to protect you. So don’t take the easy way out…don’t just say “renew it as is for another year.”
