Aviation Humor?
Hot-shot fighter vs. bomber
A young guy in an F-16 fighter was flying escort for a B-52 and generally being a nuisance, acting like a hotdog, flying rolls around the lumbering old bomber. The hotdog said over the air, "Anything you can do, I can do better." The veteran bomber pilot answered, "Try this hot-shot." The B-52 continued its flight, straight and level. Perplexed, the hotdog asked, "So? What did you do?" "I just shut down two engines, kid." Design limits..... A stormy flight aboard a Boeing aircraft; an off-duty airline stewardess is sitting next to a man in the grip of serious white-knuckle fever as he watches, through his porthole, the aircraft's wing bending and bouncing in the tempest. The stewardess tries to reassure him; she works in the industry and flies all the time, she tells him. There is nothing to worry about; the pilots have everything under control. "Madam," he replies, "I am a Boeing engineer and we did not design this aircraft to do what it is doing." Innovation! During the heat of the space race in the 1960s, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration decided it needed a ball point pen to write with in the zero gravity confines of its space capsules. After considerable research and development, the Astronaut Pen was developed at a cost of about US $1 million. The pen worked and also enjoyed some modest success as a novelty item back here on earth. The Soviet Union, faced with the same problem, used a pencil. Questions and Answers Q: What separates flight attendants from the scum of the earth? A: The cockpit door! Q: What is the difference between a flight attendant and a jet engine? A: The jet engine stops whining at the gate Q: How does a blind parachutist know when he's about to hit the ground? A: His guide dog's leash goes slack. Q: How does the Airbus A340 manage to climb? A: By the bend of the earth! Q: Why does the Pope kiss the ground each time that he lands ? A: Did you ever fly with Alitalia ? Q: What is the ideal cockpit crew? ....... A: A pilot and a dog...the pilot is there to feed the dog, and the dog is there to bite the pilot in case he tries to touch anything. Q: How many pilots does it take to change a lightbulb? A: Just one. He holds the bulb and the world revolves around him. Q: How do you know if there is a pilot at your party? A: He'll tell you. Q: What do pilots use for birth control? A: Their personality.

enhanced vision system Cirrus EVS – a picture is worth a thousand symbols At Cirrus, our top priority is safety, so we’re always working to make available to our pilots the best tools to make better, safer, aeronautical decisions. When we saw the tangible benefits of EVS (Enhanced Vision System), we decided to certify and offer EVS as an option for SR22 models sporting the Cirrus Perspective by Garmin integrated flight deck. Based on infrared technology pioneered in the military and law enforcement, EVS sensors allow pilots to see up to three times further through some low-visibility conditions like mist, rain and the dark of night, giving pilots a real-time, unobstructed and hyper-realistic view of the terrain ahead. For pilots flying precision and non-precision approaches into challenging airports, or identifying clouds while flying VFR at night, EVS advances pilot situational awareness to levels never before realized in a single-engine piston aircraft.

2010 SINGAPORE AIRSHOW PIPER ANNOUNCES GLOBAL EXPANSION
• Establishment of a flight training academy in Brunei – requests for Proposals (RFP) are out now with decisions expected soon.
S
INGAPORE, Feb. 2, 2010 — Despite the current economic downturn, strategic investment by the Singapore-based owners of Piper Aircraft, Inc. has enabled the company to move forward on many fronts, from the formation of a new company focused on Asia/Pacific initiatives, to accelerated development of its product line and other product programs. “The Imprimis acquisition was a major milestone for us – one that is a boon for the company and its future,” said Piper President and CEO Kevin J. Gould. “Over the years, Piper has had many owners, but few saw the strategic value of this iconic company. Now, with Imprimis and its strategic sense of what Piper can be and how it can grow, we have owners the likes of which we haven’t seen since the days when Bill Piper owned the Company.” Imprimis -- a corporate finance and investment management firm that operates from its offices in Singapore and Brunei Darussalam – acquired Piper last year with a pledge to take the company to new levels of performance. `We are making major commitments to expanding our business and providing top quality aircraft and service throughout Asia/Pacific, said Mary Messuti, Managing Director, Piper Aircraft Asia. Piper’s new initiatives in Asia/Pacific were the focus of the company’s news conference held here today at the 2010 Singapore Airshow and constituted yet another example of Piper’s new focus on expanding operations in Asia/Pacific after the formation of Piper Aircraft Asia, Sdn Bhd. “We have made huge inroads in establishing ourselves in the Asia/Pacific market,” said Messuti, “and our expectation is to continue significant growth in the region.” Messuti pointed to the following major developments: • The formation of Piper Aircraft Asia, Sdn Bhd, with headquarters in Brunei Darussalam. • The appointment of Allan Bligh – a major general aviation aficionado and de-facto publisher of AOPA’s Australian Pilot – as Vice President of Marketing for Australia • Ongoing plans to set up major sales and service operations — in addition to head office in Brunei Darussalam – in the Pacific/Rim and China/adjacent locations Everything Aircraft
• Ongoing and new fleet sales in the region –i.e., see (in media kit) Australian Airline Pilot Academy (AAPA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Regional Express Holdings Limited (Rex) • Debut of the all-new PiperSport here today in Asia/Pacific markets and the Light Sport Aviation (LSA) segment as a world-class aircraft that speaks to Piper’s heritage in bringing seminal, entry-level airplanes to market while offering features and performance normally found in high-end aircraft. • Establishing Aviall Services, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, to be Piper’s global parts distributor, providing supply chain support for the company’s global dealer network and individual customers. “Piper is truly committed to expansion of worldclass sales and service globally –with particular emphasis on Asia/Pacific,’ said Messuti. “Imprimis bought Piper to expand its existing businesses and investments, and facilitate its expansion into General Aviation, a strategic sector, in which it had been looking to invest for some time.” Asia’s general aviation sales are set to rise beyond its current global share of five per cent and sales of two - to six - seat aircraft should grow steadily during the next five years due to growing wealth and sophistication in Asia and increasing demand for pilot training from training schools and flying clubs (commercial and private). In acquiring Piper, Imprimis executives outlined plans to propel Piper from its current status as a company with a rich heritage and reputation for innovation, and expertise in aircraft design, development and manufacturing, to one that has greater resources and capabilities to capitalize on opportunities in emerging and traditional markets. Product Development and R&D Prior to its acquisition by Imprimis, Piper – as has been the case with many companies – had to scale back on the scope and timing of its research and development programs. Now, however, the company is back on track with full development of the PiperJet and other exciting product initiatives. Among the first actions Piper has taken in implementing its new strategic direction has been recruitment of new engineering resources to propel its product initiatives, beginning with the PiperJet.

continued from Page 8
“Development of the PiperJet, as well as other new products and innovations, is crucial to Piper’s longterm growth strategy,” said Gould, “and Imprimis has earmarked funds to ensure that we move forward on these vital programs.” Proof of that commitment is evident in Piper’s hiring of more than 50 engineers as it ramps up product development programs to ensure optimal timing for first deliveries of the company’s first pure, jet-powered, turbofan design in its 72-year history. “We are in the process of hiring engineers at all levels – from senior to entry-level professionals – and across all engineering disciplines, including structures, systems, flight test, and manufacturing,” Messuti said. “With our new ownership, the acceleration of Piper’s product programs is truly remarkable.” Piper’s Plans to Expand Globally In addition to its product initiatives Piper executives have announced that the company is well on its way to international expansion of dealer bases throughout Asia, Pacific/Oceania, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Central America and Caribbean regions. This expansion is in keeping with the company’s new strategic growth plan. In acquiring Piper, Imprimis cited international expansion as a top priority, particularly in Asia, where general aviation sales are set to rise beyond their current global share of five (5) percent. Piper sees significant opportunities there given the company’s model mix and the steady growth analysts are predicting for sales of two-, four- and six-seat aircraft over the next five years – the result of shifting demographics and increasing demand for pilot training from training schools and flying clubs (commercial and private). Says Gould: “We have a serious game plan, and an ownership group that is committed to our longterm growth and success.” About Piper Aircraft, Inc. Piper Aircraft Inc. is headquartered in Vero Beach, Fla. Piper’s rich legacy is born of 72 years of unparalleled history, with almost 150,000 aircraft brought to market and more than 160 models certified. Approximately 90,000 of those aircraft are still flying and being serviced and supported on every continent by Piper’s 65 service centers, 27 dealers and 2,500 field personnel. PC-12 NG DELIVERIES REACH A NEW HIGH
P
ilatus is delighted to announce a record-breaking year for PC-12 deliveries. The company delivered 100 PC-12 NGs in 2009 worldwide, surpassing delivery totals for any production year since the PC-12 program began.
“Achieving 100 deliveries in a single year is a significant milestone for Pilatus and the PC-12 NG production program and reason to celebrate,” said Ignaz Gretener, Vice President General Aviation at Pilatus Aircraft, Ltd. “This would be true in any year, but the fact we did it last year is simply outstanding.” The PC-12 has consistently been one of the top selling models of turbine- powered aircraft, and Pilatus has conservatively increased production over the years, delivering 90, 92, and 97 of the type in 2006, 2007, and 2008, respectively. The company’s steady approach has allowed it to carefully grow yet stay appropriately lean. The single-turbine powered PC-12 NG is widely recognized as a powerful yet responsible business and special mission aircraft. Its low acquisition and operating costs and large pressurized cabin offer unique capabilities those operators worldwide are using every day to travel quickly and efficiently in the new economy. Pilatus Aircraft Ltd was founded in 1939 and is currently world market leader in the manufacture and sale of single-engine turboprop aircraft. It is the only Swiss company that develops and produces private and training aircraft. Pilatus, which is headquartered in Stans, Switzerland, is licensed to maintain and perform upgrades on a variety of aircraft. This service is complemented by three independent subsidiaries in Altenrhein (Switzerland), in Broomfield (Colorado, USA) and Adelaide (Australia). With a workforce of over 1100 at its head office, Pilatus is one of the biggest employers in Central Switzerland. Pilatus additionally provides training for almost 100 apprentices in nine different professions – job training for young people has always been a very high priority at Pilatus. Ryan SCW-145
T
. Claude Ryan, another of the early American aviation pioneers formed a new enterprise called Ryan Aeronautical Company in 1934, quite separate and apart from his earlier aircraft ventures. This fresh start inspired revolutionary concepts for all-metal constructed low-wing aircraft. The first of what would be a long list of achievements, through World War Two and beyond, was the Ryan ST or “Sport Trainer”. This was a lowwing tandem-seat monoplane of which only five were built before switching production to the Ryan STA in 1935, that ultimately led to the widely used PT-22 Recruit military trainer. Beginning in 1936 and progressing through 1937, extensive efforts were put forward to develop and produce a luxurious ‘sport cabin’ monoplane with thick duralumin skin and fixed undercarriage. The roomy three-place interior, under a sliding canopy, was to have the amenities of plush leather upholstery, mohair carpets, adjustable seats, soundproofing, heating and ventilation. Ultimately a 145hp Warner Super-Scarab 7-cylinder Radial, SS165 Series engine was installed whereafter the aircraft was re-designated SCW (Sport Coupe Warner) in October 1937. Exceeding all design performance expectations the prototype Ryan SCW-145 was put to public acceptance scrutiny at aviation gatherings and air meets around the country. Success was immediate. An initial production run for 25 SCW aircraft began in 1938. However, before completion of the run Ryan was inundated with urgent military orders for the Ryan STM (Sport Trainer Military) model from numerous countries in Latin America and the Netherlands due to the threat of war in Europe. In due course the United States military also showed a keen interest in the trainer version. As a result only a dozen of the SCW-145 model came off the assembly line for public sale. An additional example was much later assembled separately from available parts and the prototype was sold to Mexico. The sleek little sportster had a climb rate of 900 ft. per min., a top speed of 152 mph. and a service ceiling of 19,400 ft. Gross weight is 2150 lbs. and empty, 1350 lbs. with a wingspan of 37 ft. 6 in. The New Ryan SCW-145 pictured herewith, and photographed at Concrete WA in July 2009, was built in 1938 under C/N 208, and operates under tail #NC 18914. Story and Photo By: Ed Anderson

American Legend Aircraft Company News Release - The Legend Cub 1st Delivered International Texas Sport Kit CUB Completed
S
ULPHUR SPRINGS, TEXAS, FEBRUARY 2, 2010 - American Legend Aircraft Company announced today the completion of its first international customer delivery of a Texas Sport aircraft kit. The kit was delivered to Brazil in early 2009. The new owners took approximately ten months to complete its construction.
Avionics Installation
Avionics Dealer for Narco, Garmin, David Clark, Trimble, PS Engineering. ELT Certification $35 CDN. Other Avionics Available Various & Used
The Texas Sport kit is manufactured by American Legend Aircraft Company. The kit, based on the popular Legend Cub design, enables amateur aircraft builders to fabricate their own CUB with any number of features and options they desire. Both the Legend Cub and Texas Sport are similar to the widely recognized J-3 Piper Cub, yet incorporate many modern features. The 1st delivered international Texas Sport kit was assembled by experienced amateur aircraft builder FLYER Indústria Aeronáutica of Sao Paolo, Brazil. The Texas Sport gives customers interested in a Cubtype aircraft all the advantages of the classic design, plus a nearly unlimited variety of customization opportunities, all in a newly manufactured aircraft. The kit is based on the LSA certified Legend Cub and is constructed at the same factory--two important facts worth repeating. Both aircraft utilize customized tooling, newly manufactured components, and proven assembly processes. The Texas Sport starts with a fully welded chromoly airframe sealed for corrosion protection. Its wings are predominantly aluminum, including custom extruded aluminum spar and rib frames, exceeding the durability of the historic wood wings, but matching the original Cub airfoil. Texas Sport kit customers follow a detailed, and illustrated, manual for a major portion of the aircraft’s assembly, fulfilling FAA 51-percent requirements for amateur-built aircraft. Builders of the Texas Sport kit will also exercise their skills and talents when performing fabric covering, interior finishes, instrument panel assembly, and engine installation. Key features that differentiate the Texas Sport from vintage Cubs include 1) a design with electric start that additionally provides for electrically powered instruments, avionics, and lighting options. 2) The Texas Sport can be flown solo from either the front or rear seat. Piper enters the LSA market with the PiperSport SEBRING, Fla., Jan. 21, 2010 – Piper Aircraft, Inc. announced details and unveiled its all-new PiperSport here today, underscoring its foray into the Light Sport Aviation segment with a world-class aircraft that speaks to Piper’s heritage in bringing seminal, entrylevel airplanes to market while offering features and performance normally found in more expensive, high-end aircraft. Piper President & CEO Kevin J. Gould made the announcement during a news conference held here this morning at the Sebring U.S Sport Aviation Expo 2010. “With the PiperSport,” Gould said, “Piper is entering what is undeniably one of the most exciting market segments in general aviation. This burgeoning segment is becoming vital to our industry and playing an ever-increasing role in developing general aviation’s next generation of pilots. The PiperSport is an amazing entry-level aircraft that will bring new customers into Piper and lead the way for those customers to step up into more sophisticated and higher performance aircraft within our line over time. Moreover, as the only aircraft manufacturer to have models in every market segment, Piper continues to expand its business model to ensure that we are in tune with the times and that we meet the needs of our customers at every level.” The PiperSport, manufactured under a licensing agreement with Czech Sport Aircraft (CSA) and distributed through Piper’s master distributor, PiperSport Distribution, Inc., is immediately available for sale, with first deliveries scheduled for April. The PiperSport features a rate of climb of 1,200 feet per minute and is capable of reaching a maximum cruise speed of 138 miles per hour and an altitude of 10,000 feet. The aircraft has a gross weight of 1,320 pounds and 600 pounds of useful load. With the ability to run on automotive fuel, the PiperSport’s 30-gallon fuel capacity gives the aircraft a range of 600 nautical miles and the ability to refuel virtually anywhere in the world that offers either 100LL or premium, unleaded automotive fuel. There are three variants of the aircraft: The PiperSport, the PiperSport LT (primarily a training model), and the PiperSport LTD (professional model). Each model features the latest in luxury – from leather seats to cutting-edge design – and is equipped with a 100-hp Rotax 912 engine and a BRS complete aircraft parachute recovery system. Each model also features the same gross weight, speed, fuel capacity, and range. As to specific models, the PiperSport includes: • Dynon D100 Flight Display • Garmin 495 GPS • Garmin SL40 Nav/Com • Garmin GTX 328 Transponder • Ameriking ELT • PS Engineering PM3000 Intercom In addition to the equipment that the base model PiperSport includes, the PiperSport LT substitutes the Dynon D120 Engine Monitoring system for the PiperSport’s analog display, and the top-of-the-line PiperSport LTD also features the Dynon AP74/HS34 autopilot. Gould underscored Piper’s heritage in light aircraft and pointed out that that CSA – Piper’s supplier – is a leader in the LSA industry. He added that the PiperSport models build on CSA’s excellent products and reputation with added features specifically for the PiperSport. “Piper’s heritage dates from what was one of the original ‘LSA’ aircraft of its time: the venerable Piper Cub,” Gould
said. “Consequently, Piper is in many ways returning to a market segment we played an integral role in inventing ... but with all the modern, state-of-the-art elements that our customers expect today, from design and manufacturing to performance, avionics and reliability.

World's Newest Helicopter Debuts at Singapore Airshow
S
INGAPORE (Feb. 2, 2010) - The world's newest helicopter, the light, twin-engine Bell 429, debuts today at the Singapore Airshow exhibit of Bell Helicopter, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company.
"The 429 represents Bell's commitment to the commercial helicopter market and to invest in delivering aircraft and services that bring greater value to our customers," said Bell President and CEO John L. Garrison. Certified in mid-2009 by Canadian, U.S. and European authorities, the 429 is to enter service within weeks with its first customer, Air Methods Corporation. Air Methods will operate the aircraft for U.S. emergency medical service operator Mercy One in Des Moines, Iowa. Potential customers and attendees of the Singapore Airshow can see the 429 features that set new standards for helicopters in its class by the Bell chalet at location CD11. Bell's stand (Q01 in the main exhibit hall) also features a full-size mockup of this innovative helicopter. The 429's standard-setting features include: • a design certified to the most up-to-date requirements of airworthiness authorities • the only EASA-approved maintenance pro gram in the helicopter industry and the only one based on Maintenance Steering Group 3 (MSG-3) practices that are the foundation of the world airlines' unprecedented reliability, and • performance that, when compared to typical aircraft in its class, provides almost 20 percent more useful load at altitude on a hot day, more than 30 percent greater climb rate at maximum gross weight from sea level on a standard day and higher demonstrated takeoff and landing altitudes. Bell developed many of the 429's design features with input from customer advisory boards. The result is a highly flexible cabin space that can be customized to individual customer requirements, whether as an air ambulance, offshore oil and gas support aircraft, VIP transport or other applications. "In designing this aircraft, we listened to our customers," Garrison said. "Their positive response to the 429 is the best indication that it is the game-changing helicopter they seek." CIRRUS OWNER’S RELIEF EFFORTS IN HAITI: “Making a Difference, One Cirrus at a Time” Tuesday, 9 February 2010 05:38 by Cirrus Aircraft By Lisa Lotane
T
hursday, January 21st started out as an ordinary day filled with meetings, phone depositions, and case preparations for attorney and Cirrus Aircraft owner, Troy Lotane. After an afternoon appointment cancelled, he decided to take a break and head down to his hangar at Melbourne International Airport. He needed to check an altimeter setting for the service center at Tampa Executive where he regularly services his Cirrus GTS Turbo aircraft. It is imperative that he keeps his high performance plane in tip top shape as he uses it to travel the state of Florida for his law firm. On this particular day, as he approached his hangar he noticed quite a bit of activity a few hangars down from his. Seeing his church executive pastor, Jay Austin, and others loading a twin engine plane with supplies for Haiti, he made a few inquiries. Immediately the pilot, Pat Roth, began explaining to Troy that his mission was to get critical supplies and personnel into Haiti and help adopted orphans from Ruuska Village get transportation to the United States. Two organizations, Air Mobile Ministries and Reach Out to Haiti, have worked together tirelessly to coordinate this effort. They have found smaller planes to work extremely well and very efficiently, and they have counted on selfless local pilots to help them in their efforts. Pat had convinced Troy that because he had his IFR certification and his own plane, he was an ideal candidate to help with this mission. Little did Troy know that on January 27th he would be using his pilot skills, Cirrus airplane, and trust in God to go to Haiti. Having never flown this far over water before he was a bit anxious. As he talked to his pilot friends about his concern of only having a single engine, the common response was, “We may have a twin, but you have a Cirrus!” Everything Aircraft
ABOVE: Cirrus owner, Troy Lotane with Barbara Walker At 5:30 am he met Barbara Walker, who he knew was a special person from the moment he heard about her. She has worked at Ruuska Village tirelessly for over 20 years to find families and secure visas for Haitian orphans with very little hope of surviving otherwise. As desperation and panic set in after the horrifying earthquake on January 12th many visas were granted and families across the United States were notified that the children they have longed to be with for years now finally had a chance to come. Barbara and 300 pounds of supplies were loaded into Troy’s plane. At 6:00 am they were off to the Turks and Caicos - where he would refuel before continuing on to Haiti. Fuel in the Caribbean is very scarce due to the disaster relief efforts, and few islands are able to keep a supply very long. After refueling they were off to Haiti to make their 1:15 time slot. ABOVE: The devastation in Haiti
As Troy approached the airport at Port-AuPrince he was overwhelmed by what appeared to look like a war zone. It reminded him of a scene from the M.A.S.H. television show he grew up watching. There were tents, stacks Contunued Pg. 22

left a world of darkness and terror, and were being charioted into a brighter world full of hope and promise. of supplies, medical and relief workers, armed guards, razor wire, and an abundance of organized chaos. He had one hour on the ground before he was required to leave. Joe Hurston, from Air Mobile ministries, and his Haitian assistant met them at the plane with two children, Natasha, age 14, and Amanda, age 2. They seemed relatively calm as they boarded the plane and prepared for takeoff. Natasha found great comfort in singing spiritual songs before succumbing to sleep. Refueling in the Turks and Caicos was again the plan, but took much longer than anticipated as the fuel truck broke and needed repair

RELIABILITY. PERFORMANCE. DEPENDABILITY. PROVEN AGAIN AND AGAIN. In 1947, the de Havilland Aircraft Company of Canada introduced the DHC-2 Beaver aircraft. They produced approximately 1600 before ceasing production in 1967. Known by some as the "workhorse of the north", the Beaver has been instrumental in the development of modern frontiers around the world. It is also the first single-engine utility aircraft to be turbine powered with de Havilland producing over 60 Turbo units before production ceased. Viking became the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of de Havilland spare parts for the DHC-2 Beaver in 1983 when we acquired the original jigs and drawings for the aircraft from de Havilland Canada. We hold the Supplemental Type Approval (STA) / Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for replacing the Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PT6A-20 engine with the P&W PT6A-27 engine and have completed certification to increase the Turbo Beaver’s "all-up" weight to 6000 lbs. These and other enhancements make the Viking Turbo Beaver a very desirable commercial aircraft. The Aircraft The Viking Turbo Beaver has more power, better all-around performance, a longer cabin and larger payload than the Beaver from which it was developed. It benefits from over 40 years of continuous worldwide operation. It is the most rugged and reliable aircraft in its category.

In landplane form, our Turbo Beaver operates from un-surfaced ground strips or forest clearings of three hundred metres (1,000 feet) in length. With fuel reserves, operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), it carries a load of about half a ton on practical stages for nearly 1,000 kilometres (about 600 statute miles). With Viking's 6,000 lb upgrade, the Turbo Beaver can haul 2,450 lbs of freight. A cabin extension, providing for extra windows, a large baggage door and a cargo net, is also available in two different configurations from Viking. The Turbo Beaver can also be fitted with floats, amphibious gear or skis. The Viking Turbo Beaver is versatile and may be adapted for agricultural spraying, dusting and seeding as well as in oilfield, mining, and industrial transportation applications. Designed with maintenance in mind, a number of Turbo Beaver modifications make for quick turnaround and easy maintenance.

Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch designed by Bombardier carries Olympic Flame into Vancouver February 10, 2010 — Vancouver Corporate
Torch endures extreme winter weather on longest host country relay in Olympic history After traveling more than 45,000 kilometres across Canada through snow, rain, hail, wind and sub-zero temperatures, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch will transport the Olympic Flame to the Host City of Vancouver on February 11, 2010. The 2010 Olympic Torch was designed and manufactured by Montreal-based Bombardier Inc., a Canadian company founded in 1942 that stands as the largest supplier of rail equipment, systems and services, and the third largest manufacturer of civil aircraft in the world. Inspired by the contours of Canada’s winter landscape, the design of the 2010 Olympic Torch symbolizes the tracks created in snow and ice by winter sports. In collaboration with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), Bombardier engineers and industrial designers spent more than two years designing and testing the 2010 Olympic Torch. A fuel blend of propane and isobutane allows the torch to burn in colder temperatures than any other torch in Olympic history. A vent in the side of the torch allows the Olympic Flame to unfurl like a flag. “Designing and manufacturing the 2010 Olympic Torch has given us an opportunity to apply our ingenuity in aerospace and rail transportation in a way that has inspired Canadians,” said Pierre Beaudoin, President and CEO of Bombardier. “Our team is very proud to have played an important role in making the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay a success.” This week, as the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay nears the end of its successful journey, the engineering and design team from Bombardier is recalling the harsh Canadian winter weather that put the 2010 Olympic Torch to the test. Prototypes of the torch were tested in a weather simulation chamber before the final design was put to the test in Canada’s bone-chilling winter. Bombardier manufactured 12,000 torches – one for each torchbearer – with final assembly completed by hand in Montreal, Quebec. After beginning in the mild climate of Victoria, BC, on October 30, 2009, the torch relay came within 900 kilometres of the North Pole at Canadian Forces Station Alert in the North-West Territories, and experienced –38 degrees Celsius in Old Crow, Yukon. Bombardier worked closely with VANOC throughout the relay to recalibrate the torches to ensure they would withstand extreme winds. “During the Torch Relay, the weather was at times frigidly cold, but in communities across Canada hearts were warmed by the Olympic Flame and what it represents,” said Jean-Francois Clusiau, Bombardier’s Torch Assembly Manager. When the torch relay concludes on February 12 at the Opening Ceremony of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the torch will have journeyed through 1,037 communities over 106 days in the most eastern, western and northern points of the country. Twelve thousand torchbearers carried the flame by foot and on a variety of modes of transportation, including quintessentially Canadian methods such as canoes, skis and snowmobiles. Bombardier’s Guide to the 2010 Torch, which contains technical data and commentary from the design team, is available at the following link: www.bombardier.com/files/en/supporting_docs/BI-Bombardier-torch.pdf About Bombardier A world-leading manufacturer of innovative transportation solutions, from commercial aircraft and business jets to rail transportation equipment, systems and services, Bombardier Inc. is a global corporation headquartered in Canada. B-17 FLYING FORTRESS As goes the way of legends and fame, so went the Boeing Aircraft Company B-17, fourengine, all metal monoplane bomber – the worlds’ first. Dubbed the fifteen ton “Flying Fortress” by a local news reporter, because of its size and bristling defensive armament, the XB-17 (Model 299) was rolled off the Seattle, WA assembly line and presented to the public at large, including representatives of the U.S. Army, July 16, 1935. The prototype heavy bomber was taken aloft a few weeks later, July 28. Although designed and built by Boeing without any government funding or contract, the aircraft was, nonetheless, designed to meet U.S. Army Air Corps specifications of a called for ‘battleship of the skies’. The XB-17 surpassed all requirements and at the same time set new range and speed records. However, the prototype crashed on takeoff in October of the same year, but because the military was already suitably impressed with test results, they ordered more aircraft for further evaluation - 14 YB-17A’s powered by 1200-hp Wright Cyclone radial engines. The first improved prototype flew in December 1936. The remainder were delivered between March 1, and August 5, 1937 to the Army Air Corps 2nd Bombardment Group for additional flight and ground tests which evidently proved successful. The first production order was in 1938 for 39 B-17B types, further upgraded to include the new Moss/General Electric turbochargers that became standard equipment on all future B-17’s. The B-17 designation was simply the 17th bomber type used by the Army Air Corps. Soon after, a second order was placed, but for 38 B-17C models, which among other things, were armed with seven machine guns rather than the original five, and had self sealing fuel tanks. These planes arrived for duty in late 1939. A similar “D” model arrived in strength in 1940. The “C’s and D’s” were the first B-17’s to experience combat in the Pacific following the attack on Pearl Harbor. 1941 saw the British Royal Air Force receive the first of their offered B-17C’s, which were immediately employed on daylight raids against German targets. These foray’s, however, were not as successful as hoped in an offensive air campaign. The British thereafter concentrated their efforts more successfully on night bombing missions over Germany with their own developed range of heavy bombers. The rest of the eventual 200 ‘Forts’, E, F, & G versions, received by Britain, apparently were assigned to various roles in Bomber and Coastal Commands until the end of the war, when they were retired from active service. An extensively modified B-17E was the 1941 version that was to become the standard-bearer design of the developing “Flying Fortress”. 512 E’s were built, being initially deployed to the Pacific Theatre of operations, but later mid-year 1942 most were moved to units of the 8th Air Force in England, where they would become the first B-17’s to see action over Europe with American crews. By the spring of 1942 still another model ‘Fortress’ would appear, designated the B-17F. This flying battlewagon would bear the brunt of the U.S. bombing offensive over Europe in 1943. The legend and the fame began. Memory capturing news pictures of skies filled with hundreds of high flying, big tailed ‘Fortresses’, spewing contrails on their way to bombing targets in Germany. The “Memphis Belle” and other unending tales of losses and terribly battle damaged “Forts” limping homeward with wounded crews, across enemy occupied territory and hostile skies told the truth and brutal reality of war in the air. But one of the more astonishing and moving stories of the air war, was that of a badly beaten up B-17, piloted by 21 year old second lieutenant Charles Brown, carrying major casualties and heading home on but one good engine at about 300 hundred feet above the ground, after a bombing raid on December 23, 1943. Upon the scene, a German Messerschmitt continued on Pg 34 Everything Aircraft

Agency issues preliminary safety data for 2009: one fatal accident overshadows good safety record 2009 shows lowest number of fatal accidents for EASA Member State
2
009 was the year with the lowest number of fatal accidents on record for the 31 Member States of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), according to preliminary data. However this good safety record was overshadowed by the accident of an Airbus A330 over the Atlantic. This was the only fatal accident for aeroplanes registered in an EASA Member State in commercial air transport*. Despite this, the number of fatalities in 2009 (228 fatalities) is significantly above the decade average. The high number of non-fatal accidents (24) in 2009 indicates that further progress in safety is necessary. In comparison, the decade 1999-2008 had every year on average 27 non-fatal and 5 fatal accidents with 92 fatalities. For other world regions the safety record in 2009 has been marred by an accident of an Airbus A310 in Comoros and a Tu-154 in Iran. In total there were 41 fatal accidents involving aircraft registered outside EASA Member States. This is below the decade average of 51 fatal accidents (1999-2008), but not the lowest in the decade. In these accidents there were 573 fatalities, the second lowest number in the decade. Preliminary data shows that in 2009, the number of fatal accidents worldwide in commercial air transport with helicopters was the second lowest for the decade: only in the year 2000 the number of fatal accidents was lower. When looking at the three-year moving average, it appears that for the last five years the average is more or less constant. The accident numbers for EASA Member States remain small and no further conclusions can be drawn. Two fatal accidents occurred in Europe in 2009. Two people died in Poland when an emergency medical helicopter crashed. In April, sixteen people died when a helicopter crashed during an offshore flight from an oil platform to Aberdeen, Scotland. Further information on safety in civil aviation will be included in the “Annual Safety Review 2009” due to be published by EASA later this year. * Fatal Accidents categorised as such using ICAO Annex 13 definition. Accidents include aeroplanes or helicopters with maximum take-off mass above 2 250kg conducting commercial air transport operations (includ-

Diamond Airborne Sensing gets approvals for Nose Pod Configuration and Noise & IR Reduction Kit Diamond Airborne Sensing’s Nose Pod Configuration, designed for carrying very large sensors, as well as the in-house developed Noise & IR Reduction Kit that reduces noise and infrared waves to a significantly low level, received EASA type certification this January.
Diamond Airborne Sensing already tested the UltraCamX during a photoflight over a project area of about 300 km² in only 2 h 45 min and several other projects. The nose pod is not only available and certified for the new generation of DA42 MPPs, but also can be purchased for MPPs running with Thielert engines. For further improvement, Airborne Sensing is already testing to carry the RIEGL airborne laser scanner LMS Q-680 together with a medium-format airborne digital camera system (IGI H/39) in its Nose Pod.
Diamond Airborne Sensing (DAS) continues its road to success and is very proud to announce that two of its latest innovations finally have been certified by the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) for DA42 Multi Purpose Platforms (MPP).
The Diamond MPP’s pod philosophy became one innovation richer: The Nose Pod is now available for all interested customers, besides the already certified Universal Nose, designed to carry different EO/IR gimbals up to a weight of 65kg (144lbs) as well as the Belly Pod, able to carry payload up to 80kg (177lbs). With the nose pod configuration it is possible to carry large-format aerial cameras, like the Microsoft UltraCamX, weighing up to 85kg (188lbs). Such cameras produce high-quality large-scale orthophotos and are perfectly suited for aerial mapping and photogrammetric projects. With 196 megapixels and a collection rate of 2.5 Gbits per second, the number of flight lines and therefore all operational costs can be reduced tremendously.
The revolutionary Noise & IR Reduction Kit, developed by Diamond Airborne Sensing’s R&D department, which is already installed and tested on the new GUARDIAN, also received its certification and can now be offered for all DA42 MPP New Generation aircraft. With this special feature Airborne Sensing succeeded in lowering down noise to a level below average ambient noise (not noticeable above 1.000 ft at loiter speed) as well as reducing the IR signature below a significant level of recognition above 8.000 ft (invisible for IR seeker heads). Especially in the law enforcement sector, this on-top exhaust system convinced our customers and is recommended to everyone who is looking for a perfect surveillance & reconnaissance aircraft. The DA42 MPP NG (equipped with the noise reduction kit) is the first survey aircraft that is verifiably operating under a noise threshold of 60dB at 500ft AGL – that makes it an ideal choice for geodesy projects.
The fact that the MPP is operating below an average city noise level increases fields of operations tremendously as standard geodesy flights are operated at 3,000ft AGL. For further information on both supplementary equipments, please contact Diamond Airborne Sensing’s sales department (airbornesensing@diamond-sensing.com). Everything Aircraft

10/10 Aircraft is new.
9/10 Paint is new. Airframe and paint are in excellent condition with no scratches or dents.
9/10 Interior is new. There are no scratches, cracks, crazing or other evidence of use.
8/10 Paint and airframe are in near new condition. Minor scratches (shallow, short and less than 1 or 2 per square foot) are detectable only on close inspection (inspecting aircraft while standing at less than an arms' length from it). Paint on often-used fasteners and screws may be chipped.
8/10 Interior is in near new condition. Any smell, dirt or matting can be removed by simple cleaning. Some evidence of use can be found only on close inspection.
7/10 Paint has high gloss. Small number (less than 3 or 4 per square foot) of scratches are apparent, mostly on leading edges due to abrasion. Close inspection reveals only a few small dents or chips (less than 1 or 2 per square foot). Windows are clear with no crazing or discoloring. 6/10 Paint is shiny. Several small scratches, chips or dents (4 to 6 per square foot) can be found, mostly around high use areas (fuel caps, doors, struts). Some crazing or small stress cracks (less than 2 or 3 hairline cracks per square foot) are visible in plastic and fiberglass structures. Several windows may be milky at edges. 5/10 Paint is sound (no corrosion apparent). Slight oxidation can easily be polished out, leaving paint shiny again. Two or three small areas (rounded corner of cowling, part of leading edge) of crazing can be found in paint. Paint on leading edges is rough from abrasion. Touched up or repaired areas may be seen on close inspection. Small number (3 or 4 per square foot) of short cracks can be found in fiberglass wingtips and cowlings due to normal wear or hangar rash. Cowling seals are faded. Many (less than half) windows have milky edges. Several windows may be crazed or lightly scratched. Aircraft looks attractive to most people during walk-around. 4/10 Paint is generally sound. Small areas require special attention (touch up or repair by trained individual) due to oxidation, peeling, chipping, corrosion or crazing. Paint is dull in many (less than half) areas. Most windows are crazed and scratched. 3/10 Paint is not shiny and has peeled in many areas. Most leading edges and upper surfaces are crazed and oxidized. Moderate number (5 or 6 per square foot) of chips, cracks or dents can be found. All window surfaces are scratched. Even after touch-up and polishing, aircraft still looks unsightly. 2/10 Aircraft looks terrible. Paint is badly oxidized, peeled and blemished. It is well beyond the touch-up and polish stage. Corrosion, dents and cracks require extensive work. 1/10 Exterior is so full of corrosion, heavy dents or tears that it will not pass an annual inspection without repairs.

7/10 A small amount of wear is apparent. Small, shallow scratches and/or stains (1 or 2 per seat) can be found on seats, carpet or woodwork. Stain remover and shampoo removes almost all stains. Headliner is clean with no stains. There are no nicks in woodwork. 6/10 Headliner may have a couple of dirty spots that can be removed almost completely with cleaning. Matting in high use areas does not vacuum out completely. Steaming or shampooing improves interior considerably, but a couple of small, limited areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) remain looking worn or stained. No frayed or torn fabric is apparent. Leather, vinyl or woodwork has no cracks, but small scratches or creases (4 to 6 per seat) are obvious. Seats and drawers operate smoothly. Scratches in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior still looks attractive when cleaned thoroughly. 5/10 High use areas (doorway, beneath rudder pedals) still look worn (fibers appear shorter than surrounding carpet) after thorough shampooing. Headliner may have several stains but is not torn. Minor (2 or 3 instances per seat) fraying, staining or cracking is apparent on less than half of the seats. Small nicks are visible in woodwork. About one-third of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior can be made to look clean, but it lacks sparkle in many areas. 4/10 Scratches, stains and frayed fabric are seen on most seats. More than half of the leather or vinyl seats may have small cracks. Carpet is matted along aisle. Carpet also has numerous stains, snags or other irregularities. Interior has two or three tears. About half of the seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Wood laminates may be peeling slightly. Several cracks in scuff plates around doorways are obvious. Interior cannot be made to look clean or smell fresh. 3/10 Tears, snags and stains are clearly visible in many areas. Several cigarette burns can be found. Most seats and drawers do not operate smoothly. Interior looks and smells dirty even after cleaning. 2/10 Cracks, stains, tears and snags are the norm. Many seats have exposed foam. Interior is dirty and foul-smelling even after thorough cleaning. 1/10 Interior is so dirty and worn that most people would be hesitant about sitting down for fear of damaging clothing.

Diamond Airborne Sensing takes over the first GUARDIAN On November 9th, 2009, the first fully certified new generation of DA42M – named GUARDIAN – went into operations at Diamond Airborne Sensing The GUARDIAN is a further major milestone in the history of Airborne Sensing. The new DA42MPP (Multi Purpose Platform) is perfectly suited for surveillance and reconnaissance missions as well as all kind of search and rescue operations.
A standard installed new Austro Engine (a Diamond’s subsidiary) diesel engine, AE300, and a fully integrated Garmin GFC700 autopilot are the main differences of the new generation MPPs to the previous version. The Austro Engine’s manufactured 170hp diesel engine has its unique features with the EECU controlled actuator, a conventional constant speed propeller governor, a high mounted turbocharger, a torsional vibration absorber and a heavy duty reduction gearbox. The main benefit of the GFC700 is the complete integration in the G1000 glass cockpit which reduces pilot’s workload dramatically - essential when the aircraft is operated in difficult environmental conditions. Flight director, yaw damper and flight level change modus set a new standard in air safety.
The universal nose, designed to carry different EO/IR gimbals up to a weight of 65kg (144lbs) as well as the belly pod, able to carry payload up to 80kg (177lbs), are already certified for the Everything Aircraft
GUARDIAN. Especially for military purposes the GUARDIAN can be provided with a passive surveillance painting and the revolutionary Diamond Airborne Sensing on-top IR & Noise Reduction Kit. These special features reduce the aircraft heat and noise signature down to a level that is less noisy than a passing car and are therefore very popular with our customers. For further improvement, Diamond Airborne Sensing’s R&D department is working on a facility to equip the GUARDIAN with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) option for maritime purposes. Diamond Airborne Sensing is using the GUARDIAN for law enforcement live demonstrations and as a show model at aviation fairs. The new platform is also used for commissioned flight operations. Aurora Flight Sciences, headquartered in Manassas, VA USA, has placed a fleet sales order for several fully equipped DA42 New Generation “Guardians” to support a new business initiative for Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) “power-bythe-hour” flight services in support of military customers and civil/commercial mapping services the USA. Furthermore the sales department is finalizing fleet sales with interested parties from the United Kingdom.

109G on the hunt for it’s third B-17 kill of the day, and perhaps the “Knights Cross” for Luftwaffe flying ace, 27 year old first lieutenant Franz Stigler. With no gun action from the bomber and after eyeballing the situation, Stigler just couldn’t bring himself to put away the helpless B-17. Instead, to his possible peril, Stigler it is said, hand-signaled Brown and led the battered “Fort” and its desperate crew outward toward the sea and home to England before his breaking off for return to base. 50 years later the two older warriors, Brown and Stigler, met for the first time and became fast friends, which they would remain. The final model and largest production of the “Flying Fortress” was the B-17G, greatly improved with new features drawn from extensive combat experiences. The first B-17G’s arrived in England for daylight bombing duties over Europe in mid 1943. A total of 12,731 B-17’s were built by Boeing, Lockheed and Douglas aircraft companies of which roughly half were destroyed in combat or operational accidents. Although the early models of the B-17 left much to be improved upon in terms of being an actual flying fortress, the F & G series with their nose to tail machine guns, armor, bomb tonnage and rugged power, finally did live up to the image and name plus even seemed to epitomize the fighting spirit of the ‘Mighty 8th Air Force’. “Good to look at and good to fly” were apparent common words from pilots who trusted the “Flying Fortress” to get ‘em there and get ‘em home. A B-17G could carry a bomb load of 6,000 to 8,000 pounds, had armament of 13 x .50 caliber machine guns, a crew of 10, range 3,750 miles, ceiling altitude 36,400 feet with a cruising speed of 160 mph under power of four Studebaker built Wright R-1820-97 Cyclone engines, providing 1200-hp at takeoff. The B-17 pictured in this feature, with ‘Little Friends,’ is a 1944 “G” model, s/n 4485314, owned by the Commemorative Air Force and based at Falcon Field, Mesa, Arizona. Called “Sentimental Journey” and sporting Betty Grable Nose Art this “Flying Fortress”, N9323Z, flys airhows around the United States under the markings of the Eighth Air Force, 457th Bomb Group. According to various sources, the latest count of surviving B-17’s is 45, of which 15 are airworthy, mostly in the United States. The rest are preserved or stored pending restoration.
February 5, 2010 — Montréal Aerospace Business aircraft: 176 deliveries; 85 negative net orders Commercial aircraft: 121 deliveries; 88 net orders Amphibious aircraft: 5 deliveries; 8 net orders Bombardier Aerospace announced today that it delivered 302 aircraft for the fiscal year ending January 31, 2010, compared to 349 aircraft deliveries in the previous fiscal year 2008/09 (year ending January 31, 2009). It received 11 aircraft orders, net of cancellations, compared to 367 orders, net of cancellations, for the previous fiscal year. With the aviation industry continuing to struggle in the current difficult economic environment, Bombardier Aerospace’s performance was solid. “The global economic crisis which began in 2008 continued to impact the civil aviation industry throughout 2009 as conditions remained challenging,” said Guy C. Hachey, President and Chief Operating Officer, Bombardier Aerospace. “While indicators of market stabilization have started to emerge, we remain cautious as economic uncertainty still prevails. We have taken significant steps to strengthen our operations and continue to invest significantly in future programs. We strongly believe that through flawless execution and by creating a loyal customer base for our products and services, we will emerge from this crisis a stronger and more efficient company,” he added. Business Aircraft In fiscal year 2009/10, Bombardier delivered 176 business jets, compared to 235 for the same period last fiscal year, in line with the 25 per cent decrease in business aircraft delivery guidance provided in 2009. Business aircraft deliveries for the current fiscal year 2010/11 are expected to be approximately 15 per cent less than fiscal year 2009/10. Commercial Aircraft In fiscal year 2009/10, Bombardier delivered 121 commercial aircraft, compared to 110 for the previous fiscal year. This is in line with the 10 per cent increase in commercial aircraft delivery guidance provided last year. Bombardier expects that most of the deliveries of its commercial aircraft will take place in the last three quarters of the current fiscal year 2010/11 as a result of the production rate reductions announced in 2009 and the delay in the certification and entry into service of the CRJ1000 aircraft to the second half of fiscal year 2011. Compared to the previous fiscal year, the Corporation expects to deliver approximately 20 per cent fewer commercial aircraft in fiscal year 2010/11. Note: All fiscal year 2009/10 delivery and order numbers are unaudited.
