bridal Your Guide to Bridal Professionals in the East Bay It’s that time of year again – holiday engagements and lots of excited, newly engaged brides-to-be. After the excitement dies down, the planning begins, and there are so many decisions to make. What venue, florist, and photographer can help to make this day special? Need help? Check out East Bay Bridal in print and online (www.eastbaybridal.com) to find the best local vendors to help make your day a memorable event. Why choose local? Local vendors have a stake in the local wedding industry so they will go that extra mile to make sure your event is perfect. East Bay Bridal is the “only” local bridal publication that connects local brides and local vendors through print, online, and luxury events. Speaking of events – mark your calendar for Feb. 8, 2015 and March 8, 2015 for the first major bridal fairs of the season. Join us at the fabulous Hotel Sofitel in Redwood City for an “An Afternoon of Amor.” Plan your big day with local vendors and enjoy a spectacular runway show featuring the newest gowns of the 2015 season. Then Sunday, March 8, join us again for the 3rd Annual Luxury Bridal Event at the 5-Star Lafayette Park Hotel. Sip champagne, kick start your wedding planning with more local vendors, and shift your wedding planning into high gear. Your wedding is a once-in- a- lifetime experience, so enjoy every minute of it. Try on as many dresses as you can, smell all the beautiful bouquets, and remember to savor every minute of your engagement. And when looking for help, make sure to Find Your Inspiration ….. Locally!

Countdown to Your Perfect Wedding A step-by-step guide to help keep the stars in your eyes, your feet on the ground, and your wedding plans on track.
Women who tackle wedding planning pragmatically — as if it were a work-related project — tend to survive the process with greater ease. Think of yourself as a project manager. Establish an overall framework for completing the work, and set specific intermediate deadlines, schedules and goals. Taken one small step at a time, the detail-laden job becomes less overwhelming. Here is our suggested timetable for the steps you should take in the months, weeks and days leading up to your wedding.
9-12 months before your wedding
• Change your Facebook status to “Engaged” • Choose your wedding date. If you plan to be married in a church, temple or mosque or in a religious service at home, clear the date and time with your clergy. • Set your budget. Take time for a heart-to-heart talk with your fiancé about the budget and style of your wedding, reception and weddingrelated parties, and who pays for what. • Enlist help. Consider hiring a bridal consultant. If your budget won’t stretch that far, ask relatives and close friends to assist you in specific tasks – selecting a dress, interviewing caterers, locating a reception site – especially in areas where you feel you need support. • Compose your guest list. Let out-of-town guests know your wedding is in the works so they can make travel plans. • Reserve your reception site. • Decide on your color scheme. • Choose your wedding attendants. • Select your wedding gown, shoes and accessories. • Decide on bridesmaids’ dresses. • Determine the theme or mood you’d like to establish with the food, table settings, flowers and entertainment at your reception. • Interview caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, videographers and bakers. Get written estimates of their costs. Keep track of your discussions and their bids in a notebook or with wedding-planning app.
6-9 months before your wedding
• Choose your caterer. Remember to get a written contract. • Book your photographer and/or videographer. • Choose your musician(s). • Send out Save-the-Dates • Select your baker and order the cake. • Choose your florist.
8 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Spring/Summer 2015
• Shop for wedding rings with your fiancé. • Decide on your honeymoon destination. Work with a travel agent to book your travel and accommodations. • Select your wedding invitations. Don’t forget to purchase personal stationery for the thank-you notes you’ll need to write.
4 months before your wedding
• Register for gifts at one or more bridal-gift registries. • Help both mothers to coordinate and shop for their wedding-day attire. • Select music for your ceremony and reception. • Choose readings for your wedding and write your wedding vows. • Plan a rehearsal dinner for members of your wedding party, your family and out-of-town guests. Reserve the location. • Arrange hotel accommodations for members of the wedding party who live out of town. Reserve a block of rooms for other out-of-town guests, and let them know the rooms are available. Remember to ask for any group discounts or special packages. • Reserve your wedding-day transportation and any other wedding-day rental needs. • Make appointments for gown fittings. • Check the requirements for a marriage license. • Make sure contracts and arrangements are complete with all of your service providers.
3 months before your wedding
• Carefully prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance to your wedding, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area. • Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail six to eight weeks before your big day. • Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect. • Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel. • Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted. • Shop for gifts for your bridesmaids. Offer to help your fiancé select gifts for his attendants. • Select your “going away” outfit and special items for your trousseau. • Make a date with your photographer for any formal portraits you desire.
east bay bridal • Make an appointment to have your hair done just before your portrait session and again the day or so before your wedding. Consider including your bridesmaids in a “day of beauty” before your wedding, with manicures, hair styling, massages and makeup sessions.
2 months before your wedding
• Review the video plans with your videographer. • Put together welcome bags for out-of-town guests.
2 weeks before your wedding
• Keep writing those thank-you notes for wedding gifts! • Pick up your wedding rings. Make sure any special engraving appears precisely as you wished. • Begin packing for honeymoon.
lily stein Photography
• Mail out your wedding invitations and announcements. • Finalize the music that will be played during your wedding ceremony. • Meet with musicians who will provide entertainment during your reception and orchestrate precisely what you want and when you want it played. • Don’t be shy to voice your preferences, down to the volume, favorite songs you’d like to hear or even songs you don’t want played. • Plan your rehearsal dinner and a brunch or fun activity for out-of-town guests to enjoy on the day following your wedding. • Purchase special accessories for your wedding-day attire. • Plan a luncheon for your bridesmaids. • Make appointments for a hairdresser, makeup artist and manicurist. • Finalize honeymoon plans. If you’re traveling overseas, check again that your passports are current and that you have any necessary visas. • Gather necessary birth or baptismal certificates you may need for your wedding license.
1 week before your wedding
• Make out final checks for all your vendors. • Ask a friend or family member to arrange for wedding gifts that may be brought to your reception to be delivered to your home or another safe spot. • Wrap gifts for bridal attendants and have them ready for the rehearsal dinner. • Reconfirm honeymoon travel and hotel plans. • Arrange for payments to be made to vendors at the agreed-upon time. • Inform your caterer of the final number of guests Call any guests who haven’t RSVP’d to confirm final head count.
The day before your wedding
• Take time to relax and enjoy a massage, manicure and pedicure. • Traditionally, this is the day for your rehearsal ceremony and rehearsal dinner. Have fun! • Turn in early for a good night’s sleep.
Your Wedding Day
• Allow plenty of time for dressing, makeup and hair
1 month before your wedding
• Get your marriage license. • Have a final fitting of your gown and make sure your attendants have theirs. • Check that your menu selections and service plans are locked in place with the caterer. • Keep writing those thank-you notes on a daily basis! • If you plan a formal dinner for your reception, it’s time to draw up a seating plan and make up place cards. • Check with your florist to confirm dates and times of flower deliveries. • Review your wedding-day transportation plans and make sure drivers are clear about addresses, times and number of passengers. • Make name or address changes official on documents, including driver’s license, Social Security forms and financial accounts. Fill out change-ofaddress forms at the post office. • Meet with your photographer to specify the formal shots you want taken of the bridal party, as well as specific, candid shots you’d like taken during the reception.

styling. • If you plan on photography before the ceremony, allow ample time so you’re not rushed. • Relax, and remember: This is your special day, the result of all your careful planning. Now it’s time to enjoy. Take a deep breath. Refuse to let any glitch get to you. Savor every moment of this sacred day. Let your joy and happiness shine through.

Clever Keepsakes From Your Big Day
j
There are many creative ways to preserve physical memories of your marriage when pictures just aren’t enough. Here are a few fun ideas to keep in mind before you discard the little things! 1. Save a few of your favorite bouquet flowers to dry and press into an album or frame. 2. Frame your very first champagne cork as a married couple. 3. Preserve a napkin from your first married meal, especially if you have them monogrammed . 4. Save copies of announcements, thank-you cards, and wedding cards from guests to make a scrapbook. 5. Cherish the image of that gorgeous cake forever by having a small replica ornament made. 6. Take a bit of the landscape home from your honeymoon spot. You will always remember this first vacation together, whether it be a jar of sand or a misshaped rock. Written by: Caroline Cochran

Conscious Wedding Planning:
How To Partner With The Right Vendors
W
hen it comes to planning one of the most memorable events in one’s life, choosing the right people to work with is more important than one may expect. With potential for high stress and high spending, choosing to actually create a partnership with vendors can make for a smooth process and desirable outcome. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your potential wedding dream team: 1. Did they call you back? How and when a vendor responds to your inquiry is an indication of their business integrity and how they may respond in the future. If they indicate when they’ll respond and deliver as promised, this may be an indicator of their future reliability. 2. Map your expectations. How a vendor works, their process, what their business hours are, their preferred method of contact (text, email, phone, etc.), when they require payments, and what they need from you to be successful are all questions they should be able to answer prior to signing a contract or exchanging funds. Expectation without communication is a recipe for disappointment. 3. Don’t solely rely on word-of-mouth recommendations. Just because your friend loves someone doesn’t mean they’re necessarily a good fit for you. Have you ever met or dated someone who your friend adores just to find out they have an irritating tick
12 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Spring/Summer 2015

that makes you crazy? This is true about hiring professionals, too. Be sure you feel that you can actually work well together; don’t just take a buddy’s word. 4. Easygoing is not always easy to work with. Partnering with an easygoing professional might seem like it would be stressless, but the right vendor has a tried and true system, process, and plan to produce the service or product you need. A good professional knows what to expect, can help you anticipate what needs to be addressed, and even has a good backup plan. 5. Do they actually GET you? If a vendor feels disconnected or not present, you may want to keep looking. If they aren’t passionate about their craft or work, walk away. Select partners that leave you feeling peaceful yet excited about this journey and not like a walking wallet. While business is important, relationships always trump money; since this is an event that’s sacred to you and yours, it’s OK to ask for a balance of both. Finally, remember that wedding professionals are humans, too. For the best outcome ask how you can be a great fit for them, too. Always be kind and treat others the way you want to be treated; you’re attempting to create a wedding dream team after all. Just trust your gut, read the fine print, and make sure they’re with you on your winning team.

The
UNPLUGGED Wedding
by MICHELLE OLSON
M
ore couples keeping their special wedding moments secret from social media and the outside world by having an “unplugged” status. That means a no-phone, no-camera policy for guests during the nuptials and sometimes during the reception. It is also known as an Internet blackout. The “unplugged” wedding trend started with celebrity weddings around 2008. Since then, celebrity couples such as Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have opted for this type of option. When George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin got married this past summer in Venice, Italy they provided special coded phones for their guests to track people and keep photos from being leaked. While most everyday wedding couples aren’t worried about media rights or paparazzi attacks, there is still a private and intimate feeling that an unplugged wedding can bring. That’s why local wedding couple, Erik and Kimberly Burgess, decided to have a media-free ceremony this past May at their vintage-inspired nuptials at a private estate in Kelseyville, California.
Kimberly. “It always made me sad when you look and see that no one is actually paying attention to the wedding ceremony, a sacred moment that they’ve been invited to witness, because they’re too busy standing up to take their own pictures.”
“I developed the idea mostly from having been to weddings and seeing other wedding pictures,” said bride
Kimberly searched unplugged wedding signs on Pintrest. From there, she created her own wording for a sign

to display for her 50 wedding guests. In addition, there was an unplugged request included in the program and the officiant made an announcement to enforce the electronics-free policy. “Although a few people were skeptical initially when I mentioned our unplugged ceremony in the planning process, it went over very smooth with all our guests,” said Kimberly. “I made sure that they all knew that we had hired a professional photographer who was amazing and that we would make sure that they had access to our ceremony pictures.”
Another local photographer echoes Lee’s sentiments. Connie Leal, owner of Connie Leal Photography and co-owner of C+C Wedding Photography, had a chronic problem in the past of guests ruining her shots with their electronic devices. Leal tries to combat the problem by meeting with couples beforehand to let them know she will be moving around a lot. She asks couples to inform friends and family to be mindful of her photography.
The Burgesses did allow cameras at their reception. “We knew the ceremony was for us, but the reception was a party for our guests and we absolutely wanted them to have fun and take all the pictures that they wanted,” said Kimberly. So the couple was happy, the guests had obliged their request, what did the photographer, Jasmin Lee, think? Lee found out she would be the only one clicking photos when she arrived on their wedding day. “I thought it was the greatest idea,” said Lee. “The pictures turned out really nice.” Lee enjoyed her “unplugged” experience so much that she indirectly suggests the idea to all her brides, by including a link to her blog post about Kimberly’s wedding. She doesn’t want to turn brides off by insisting on an unplugged theme because the day belongs to the couple, but she doesn’t deny that it makes her job easier when she’s the only one with a camera. “If they decide not to have an unplugged wedding, I just work harder to get the shots,” she said. “We avoid taking pictures of people with cameras.” It’s hard to tell a story when guests are out of their seats and in the direct line of camera fire, Lee explained.
“I think couples who choose to have unplugged weddings do it out of respect to the photographer,” said Leal. “Not that others don’t like photography, but they [unplugged couples] respect our jobs.” The Burgesses ultimately decided to go unplugged to set the tone for a relaxed, intimate afternoon. And they’d do it the same way again. “While I admit that having an unplugged wedding isn’t for everyone, I wouldn’t have had my ceremony any other way,” said Kimberly. “ Everyone was fine with it, the pictures from our photographer were just gorgeous, and it really set the mood for a relaxed, social media-free day.” Spring/Summer 2015 EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM • 35

Marriage Licenses
east bay bridal
By Lindsay Gower
It’s the must-have accessory for every bride: A Marriage License! So let’s review the basics you need to know about getting licensed to wed.
GETTING THE LICENSE
Both bride and groom must go, in person together, to a County Clerk’s office. In California, you can go to the Clerk’s Office in any county; it does not need to be the county in which you are having the wedding. Neither of you needs to be a California resident to apply for a California marriage license. No blood test or medical exam is required and there is no waiting period: You apply, pay, and receive the license then and there.
You both must:
• Be at least 18 years old. If you’re younger, you need consent of parent or guardian. • Bring a government- issued valid picture ID (such as a driver’s license) that includes your full legal name and date of birth. • If you have been married before, bring Proof of Dissolution. You cannot apply for a marriage license if you are married, even if your divorce is almost final.
What to Do With the License
You receive an unsigned license. Here’s what happens to make it an official wedding certificate: • The license is good anywhere in California, regardless of which county issued it. It’s valid for 90 days. If 90 days pass before a wedding ceremony, you must get a new license. • Before the wedding, give the license to the person who’ll officiate at the ceremony. The officiant is required to review the license before conducting the ceremony. It’s a good idea to bring it to the rehearsal for go over it with the officiant, and of course bring it to the wedding. • After the ceremony, the officiant will complete and sign the license, and have it signed by bride, groom and at least one witness. • The officiant will return the license to the County Clerk’s office within 10 days of the ceremony, so it can be officially recorded. Once recorded, you can buy a copy of your wedding certificate (depending on the county, you don’t receive one automatically).
Where to Apply in the East Bay
In both Contra Costa and Alameda you can apply at the County Clerk’s office during weekdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Their offices close at 4:30, so they request you arrive by 4:00 to have time to complete the paperwork.
Contra Costa County Clerk 555 Escobar Street Martinez CA 925-646-2360
Alameda County Clerk-Recorder 1106 Madison Street Oakland CA 510- 272-6362
Their web page regarding licenses is: www.ccclerkrec.us/clerk/marriage
Their web page regarding licenses is: www.acgov.org/auditor/clerk/ml.htm
The fee is $86 for the license, payable by cash or debit card. You can get a copy of the marriage certificate, after it is recorded, for $18.
The fee is $81.00 for the license and a certificate of marriage and $17.00 for 1 certificate copy.

Wedding Send-Off Ideas
j
If getting rice and bird seed thrown at you on your way out doesn’t sound appealing, here are a few clever alternative send-off ideas you and your guests will love. 1. Provide sparklers or glow sticks for guests to light up your night-time departure. 2. Double this send-off idea as a party favor and personalize bottles of bubbles for guests to blow on your way out. 3. Theme your send-off to the time of year. In summer, throw beach balls; in autumn, fall leaves. In winter, blow bubbles or toss fake snow; In spring, shower with flower petals. 4. Lighting up paper lanterns doesn’t have to be reserved for Asian-inspired weddings. They are a fun, trendy way for guests to send you off, which will go with any theme. 5. Paper airplanes are a clever idea to use instead of rice, which will make for some awesome photos. Have guests write well wishes on them for your new marriage!

All exotic abroad honeymoons start with the same thing - a passport By Timothy R. Schulte ctw features
As the gray skies of winter creep in, tropical locales become all the more alluring. But couples planning to jet off to a foreign paradise after tying the knot need to get one thing taken care of first: the passport. If you don’t yet have a passport, right now would be a great time to start the application process At the start of November, applications were being processed in four to six weeks (two to three if expedited); during busier travel periods like the summer the wait can be longer - not good if you’re mypassport-needs-to-arrive-soon window is small. So what do you need to do?
1. Complete Form DS-11: Application For A U.S. Passport You must apply in person at an Acceptance Facility, such as a post office, or Passport Agency. Do not sign the form until instructed to do so by the Acceptance Agent. Also, be sure to have all the required documentation, which we’ll get to.
2. Submit Evidence of U.S. Citizenship Evidence of U.S. citizenship must be submitted with Form DS-11, such as: • Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state • Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth • Naturalization Certificate of Citizenship
3. Present Identification Acceptable identification includes: • Naturalization Certificate • Valid Driver’s License • Current Government ID (city, state or federal) • Current Military ID (military and dependents) Submit a Photocopy of the ID Presented Above The front and back side of the ID document on 8.5-by-11 paper
4. Pay the Application Fee Currently the rates are $110 for a Passport Book and $140 for a Passport Book + Passport Card, plus a $25 execution fee.
5. Provide 2 Passport Photos You’ll need two identical 2-by-2 color photos to be used for your passport. Many pharmacy and office-supply stores offer passport-photo services. For specific details, visit travel.state. com. Smile, and enjoy your trip! Spring/Summer 2015 EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM • 63
