Countdown to Your Perfect Wedding A step-by-step guide to help keep the stars in your eyes, your feet on the ground, and your wedding plans on track.

Women who tackle wedding planning pragmatically — as if it were a work-related project — tend to survive the process with greater ease. Think of yourself as a project manager. Establish an overall framework for completing the work, and set specific intermediate deadlines, schedules and goals. Taken one small step at a time, the detail-laden job becomes less overwhelming. Here is our suggested timetable for the steps you should take in the months, weeks and days leading up to your wedding.

9-12 months before your wedding

• Change your Facebook status to “Engaged” • Choose your wedding date. If you plan to be married in a church, temple or mosque or in a religious service at home, clear the date and time with your clergy. • Set your budget. Take time for a heart-to-heart talk with your fiancé about the budget and style of your wedding, reception and weddingrelated parties, and who pays for what. • Enlist help. Consider hiring a bridal consultant. If your budget won’t stretch that far, ask relatives and close friends to assist you in specific tasks – selecting a dress, interviewing caterers, locating a reception site – especially in areas where you feel you need support. • Compose your guest list. Let out-of-town guests know your wedding is in the works so they can make travel plans. • Reserve your reception site. • Decide on your color scheme. • Choose your wedding attendants. • Select your wedding gown, shoes and accessories. • Decide on bridesmaids’ dresses. • Determine the theme or mood you’d like to establish with the food, table settings, flowers and entertainment at your reception. • Interview caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, videographers and bakers. Get written estimates of their costs. Keep track of your discussions and their bids in a notebook or with wedding-planning app.

6-9 months before your wedding

• Choose your caterer. Remember to get a written contract. • Book your photographer and/or videographer. • Choose your musician(s). • Visit a Skin Care Profeesion • Send out Save-the-Dates • Select your baker and order the cake. • Choose your florist.

8 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Fall/Winter 2016

• Shop for wedding rings with your fiancé. • Decide on your honeymoon destination. Work with a travel agent to book your travel and accommodations. • Select your wedding invitations. Don’t forget to purchase personal stationery for the thank-you notes you’ll need to write.

4 months before your wedding

• Register for gifts at one or more bridal-gift registries. • Help both mothers to coordinate and shop for their wedding-day attire. • Select music for your ceremony and reception. • Choose readings for your wedding and write your wedding vows. • Plan a rehearsal dinner for members of your wedding party, your family and out-of-town guests. Reserve the location. • Arrange hotel accommodations for members of the wedding party who live out of town. Reserve a block of rooms for other out-of-town guests, and let them know the rooms are available. Remember to ask for any group discounts or special packages. • Reserve your wedding-day transportation and any other wedding-day rental needs. • Make appointments for gown fittings. • Check the requirements for a marriage license. • Make sure contracts and arrangements are complete with all of your service providers.

3 months before your wedding

• Carefully prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance to your wedding, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area. • Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail six to eight weeks before your big day. • Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect. • Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel. • Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted. • Shop for gifts for your bridesmaids. Offer to help your fiancé select gifts for his attendants. • Select your “going away” outfit and special items for your trousseau. • Make a date with your photographer for any formal portraits you desire.

Conscious Wedding Planning:

How To Partner With The Right Vendors

W

hen it comes to planning one of the most memorable events in one’s life, choosing the right people to work with is more important than one may expect. With potential for high stress and high spending, choosing to actually create a partnership with vendors can make for a smooth process and desirable outcome. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your potential wedding dream team:

1. Did they call you back? How and when a vendor responds to your inquiry is an indication of their business integrity and how they may respond in the future. If they indicate when they’ll respond and deliver as promised, this may be an indicator of their future reliability. 2. Map your expectations. How a vendor works, their process, what their business hours are, their preferred method of contact (text, email, phone, etc.), when they require payments, and what they need from you to be successful are all questions they should be able to answer prior to signing a contract or exchanging funds. Expectation without communication is a recipe for disappointment. 3. Don’t solely rely on word-of-mouth recommendations. Just because your friend loves someone doesn’t mean they’re necessarily a good fit for you. Have you ever met or dated someone who your friend adores just to find out they have an irritating tick 24 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Fall/Winter 2016

east bay bridal

that makes you crazy? This is true about hiring professionals, too. Be sure you feel that you can actually work well together; don’t just take a buddy’s word. 4. Easygoing is not always easy to work with. Partnering with an easygoing professional might seem like it would be stressless, but the right vendor has a tried and true system, process, and plan to produce the service or product you need. A good professional knows what to expect, can help you anticipate what needs to be addressed, and even has a good backup plan. 5. Do they actually GET you? If a vendor feels disconnected or not present, you may want to keep looking. If they aren’t passionate about their craft or work, walk away. Select partners that leave you feeling peaceful yet excited about this journey and not like a walking wallet. While business is important, relationships always trump money; since this is an event that’s sacred to you and yours, it’s OK to ask for a balance of both. Finally, remember that wedding professionals are humans, too. For the best outcome ask how you can be a great fit for them, too. Always be kind and treat others the way you want to be treated; you’re attempting to create a wedding dream team after all. Just trust your gut, read the fine print, and make sure they’re with you on your winning team.

A little dip’ll do yah!

Bridget and James made a Big Splash at their wedding.

T

affeta, tulle, chiffon and charmeuse are often associated with wedding gowns. Waterproof? Not exactly, but that’s not stopping brides from drenching their dream dresses.

In the classic romance movie, “From Here to Eternity,” actors Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr embrace passionately on the beach as the surf rolls around their feet. Brides are taking it one step further, and are heading into the water to “trash the dress.” 34 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM Fall/Winter 2016

east bay bridal

“Trash talking” is commonplace on bridal forums these days, and the chatter has been amplified by the “Trash the Dress” blog run by Louisiana photographer Mark Eric. There, photographers from all over the globe post artfully framed images of brides captured in the act of “ruining” their gowns. Not all the scenes are confined to water. Wearing wedding finery, the women are photographed sitting on grimy fire escapes, stretched out full-length in the surf, twirling dreamily in abandoned buildings or perched in dead trees. One women stands, inexplicably, on a top of a round table, her back to the camera. A widely held notion about dress trashing is that it symbolizes a woman’s commitment to her new husband. Most dress trashers, though, say it’s just fun. “There was a pool at our venue in Brentwood and my husband, James, knowing that his groomsmen would throw him in, asked me if I would be upset if he were to throw me in the pool,” said bride Bridget. “Pools are meant for fun and games, so of course, I said yes!” Photographers for the most part are happy to jump on the bandwagon, like bride Bridget and groom James’ photographer did. “I’d never shot a pool scene before,” said photographer Cathy Breslow of Breslow Imaging. “There’s a first for everything.” Some trashed dresses survive the degradation. A number of charities accept donated gowns – preferably fresh from the cleaners, of course. URLocalBride (East Bay Bridal) runs a charity gown sale every October benefiting a local charity. Brides can donate their gently used gown to help do their part for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Would you do it again? “One hundred percent,” said Bride Bridget. “It made a great story Fall/Winter 2016 and is a moment I still smile, laugh, and talk about, and hope to for EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM the rest of my life.” • 35

Marriage Licenses

By Lindsay Gower

It’s the must-have accessory for every bride: A Marriage License! So let’s review the basics you need to know about getting licensed to wed.

GETTING THE LICENSE

Both bride and groom must go, in person together, to a County Clerk’s office. In California, you can go to the Clerk’s Office in any county; it does not need to be the county in which you are having the wedding. Neither of you needs to be a California resident to apply for a California marriage license. No blood test or medical exam is required and there is no waiting period: You apply, pay, and receive the license then and there.

YOU BOTH MUST:

• Be at least 18 years old. If you’re younger, you need consent of parent or guardian. • Bring a government- issued valid picture ID (such as a driver’s license) that includes your full legal name and date of birth. • If you have been married before, bring Proof of Dissolution. You cannot apply for a marriage license if you are married, even if your divorce is almost final.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE LICENSE

You receive an unsigned license. Here’s what happens to make it an official wedding certificate: • The license is good anywhere in California, regardless of which county issued it. It’s valid for 90 days. If 90 days pass before a wedding ceremony, you must get a new license. • Before the wedding, give the license to the person who’ll officiate at the ceremony. The officiant is required to review the license before conducting the ceremony. It’s a good idea to bring it to the rehearsal for go over it with the officiant, and of course bring it to the wedding. • After the ceremony, the officiant will complete and sign the license, and have it signed by bride, groom and at least one witness. • The officiant will return the license to the County Clerk’s office within 10 days of the ceremony, so it can be officially recorded. Once recorded, you can buy a copy of your wedding certificate (depending on the county, you don’t receive one automatically).

WHERE TO APPLY IN THE EAST BAY

In both Contra Costa and Alameda you can apply at the County Clerk’s office during weekdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Their offices close at 4:30, so they request you arrive by 4:00 to have time to complete the paperwork. Contra Costa County Clerk 555 Escobar Street Martinez CA 925-646-2360

Alameda County Clerk-Recorder 1106 Madison Street Oakland CA 510- 272-6362

Their web page regarding licenses is: www.ccclerkrec.us/clerk/marriage

Their web page regarding licenses is: www.acgov.org/auditor/clerk/ml.htm

The fee is $86 for the license, payable by cash or debit card. You can get a copy of the marriage certificate, after it is recorded, for $19.

The fee is $81.00 for the license and a certificate of marriage and $17.00 for 1 certificate copy.

Real Estate

east bay bridal

N

ewly engaged couples are opting to purchase a home before they exchange vows. According the a study by Coldwell Banker Real Estate, one in four couples between the ages of 18 and 34 made the decision to purchase a home before they get married. Why the rush? Couples want to take advantage of mortgage rates that are at historical lows and avoid rents that are at historical highs (in the Bay Area). Embarking on house hunting and wedding planning may not be for everyone so here are a few tips to help you get exactly what you want. Ready - Understanding your financials and how you will manage your costs as individuals and as a couple is key to unlocking how much you can afford to spend. Meet with a mortgage planner to understand your credit scores, individual debt, savings and income. A good mortgage plan-

ner can provide couples with insights into their financial position, uncover potential pitfalls and help them make a plan to meet their goal of home ownership. Set - For un-married couples it is important to discuss how you will share the costs associated to the home purchase. Discussing and deciding how to split or allocate the costs (down payment,Fall/Winter mortgage 56 • EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM 2016

payments, taxes, and insurance) of the home purchase and getting in writing will help couples settle into the commitment of home ownership. While unpleasant to imagine, not all couples stay together so couples should also have a clear understanding of the contribution each has made in owning the home. Buy – Find a realtor who specializes in the area you are most interested in purchasing your home. You need to feel comfortable with and trust your realtor. Ask family or friends which realtors they have worked

The process can be tedious and having an expert at your side will be invaluable.

with and interview them to find the right one for you. As this may be your first time buying a home you will want a Realtor who can educate you through each step of the process, from searching and selecting a home, negotiating the deal, investigating the property, escrow, and finally taking possession of your new home. The process can be tedious and having an expert at your side will be invaluable. Karen Neuer, is the broker/owner of Open Door Realty based in Pleasanton and serving the Tri-Valley and Peninsula. Destination Documentation

All exotic abroad honeymoons start with the same thing - a passport

By Timothy R. Schulte ctw features

As the gray skies of winter creep in, tropical locales become all the more alluring. But couples planning to jet off to a foreign paradise after tying the knot need to get one thing taken care of first: the passport. If you don’t yet have a passport, right now would be a great time to start the application process At the start of November, applications were being processed in four to six weeks (two to three if expedited); during busier travel periods like the summer the wait can be longer - not good if you’re mypassport-needs-to-arrive-soon window is small. So what do you need to do?

2. Submit Evidence of U.S. Citizenship

You must apply in person at an Acceptance Facility, such as a post office, or Passport Agency. Do not sign the form until instructed to do so by the Acceptance Agent. Also, be sure to have all the required documentation, which we’ll get to.

Submit a Photocopy of the ID Presented Above The front and back side of the ID document on 8.5-by-11 paper

1. Complete Form DS-11: Application For A U.S. Passport

Evidence of U.S. citizenship must be submitted with Form DS-11, such as: • Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state • Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth • Naturalization Certificate of Citizenship

3. Present Identification

Acceptable identification includes: • Naturalization Certificate • Valid Driver’s License • Current Government ID (city, state or federal) • Current Military ID (military and dependents)

4. Pay the Application Fee

Currently the rates are $110 for a Passport Book and $140 for a Passport Book + Passport Card, plus a $25 execution fee.

5. Provide 2 Passport Photos

You’ll need two identical 2-by-2 color photos to be used for your passport. Many pharmacy and office-supply stores offer passport-photo services. For specific details, visit travel.state. com. Smile, and enjoy your trip! Fall/Winter 2016 EASTBAYBRIDAL.COM • 63
