design with a story

Hello again!

Welcome back to our second issue of the Nordic Living Magazine! After publishing our first issue this spring, I have to admit I was a bit nervous. Never having done a magazine before, I didn’t know what to expect. But we’ve been getting amazing feedback, and I am so happy about that! Thank you! This issue is a little bit darker, inspired by Nordic Noir, new trends and the darker season. But also a little bit more generous. As we are less than six weeks away from Christmas, we are of course bringing you lots and lots of ideas for Christmas gifts. The best thing about ordering your gifts online is that you get all of them sent home to you, without having to run all over town to find personal and unique gifts. And when ordering from Nordic Design Collective, you are also supporting our designers. It is like a double gift! All products in the magazine are clickable, to make it easy for you to order when you find something you like. Welcome, and thank you for reading our magazine!

Maria Richardsson Founder and CEO of Nordic Design Collective Ps. We still love to hear your what you think about our work! Tell us through social media or send us an e-mail. We want to hear it all - the good, the bad and the ugly.

Nordic With its dark settings, complex charachters and melancholic mood, the genre of Nordic Noir has brought Scandinavian crime to world wide fame. Inspired by the dark and rainy mood, just as any Swedish autumn day, we created the Nordic Design Collective interpretation of Nordic Noir. Text and photo: Maria Richardsson, styling: Maria Richardsson and Johanna TorbjĂśrnsdotter Nilsson

With success stories as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Wallander, The Bridge, Borgen and The Killing, TV and movie audiences all over the world are getting a new way of looking at the Scandinavian people. Not only are the original series huge successes, remakes are also produced with superstars like Kenneth Brannagh as detective Kurt Wallander or Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist. What is so fascinating about this genre? Living in Sweden, we are probably blind to what makes it so fascinating and exotic. Is it the dark settings and misty

weather? When living in the Nordics during the fall that is just normal. Or is it the quirky characters, often quiet, melancholic and distanced? Well, that personality is not to uncommon either. In interior design, we are also seeing a lot of dark colours at the moment. Walls are painted in different shades of greys and tableware are being launched in blacks. In our take on the Nordic Noir trend, we focused on darkness. Plastic rugs, cushion covers, posters and more - all with a stroke of darkness to them. Add a concrete setting, fallen leaves and a rainy day and we’re all set for the Nordic Noir mood.

Meet the designer:

STUDIO LJUNG & LJUNG The beautiful smoked bamboo lamps “POP” by Studio Ljung & Ljung was first shown at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in early 2014. Now the lamps, handcrafted in Thailand in collaboration with a non-profit organization, are ready to meet the world. Tell us about your background! Studio Ljung & Ljung is a design studio consisting of Martin Hedenström Ljung and Greta Ljung. We started the studio in 2012 and made our first project the week before our wedding. Martin is an architect and designer and Greta is a graphic designer, and we work with everything from graphic design to architecture, interior design, furniture design and teaching. In the fall of 2012, we started our project with the bamboo lamps POP that we manufacture together with non-profit organization Sop Moei Arts in Northern Thailand. This is a project that has taken up much of our energy and time, but at the same time it has given us a lot. For us it is very important that, as far as possible take environmental and social aspects into account. By working together with Sop Moei Arts we can be sure that everything is made in a good way. The lamps are hand woven in a small village high in the mountains. We know

who is weaving our lamps, that he gets a fair wage and even where the bamboo has grown. Simply a project that feels good on the inside! Do you have a dreamproject? The lamps are probably our dream project. It is a project where most things have fallen in to place. It is social and environmental sustainable but also a product of a collaboration with other craftsmen. It’s also incredibly interesting to work with traditional techniques and such a fantastic material as bamboo. Our dream now is to continue to develop the project with more exciting products. That would be really fun!

One of our strongest areas are illustrations and posters, so last year we launched a calendar with a few of our most popular designers. It was a success, so now it’s time for a new edition! In our Calendar for 2015 we give you a new picture each month. Most of them are created exclusively for this calendar and are not available as posters at the moment. We want to show you the variety of our designers, inspire and offer you a chance to change your wall art often.

Meet the designer:

MOONCAKE

Meet one of our latest Finnish designers Mooncake! She creates amazing posters with animals and hand printed decorative cushions in different shapes. Tell us about your background! I was born in the heart of Bavaria, Germany, in the city of Munich, with Oktoberfest, lots of people, cool urban life, but also beautiful chestnut trees and the great Alps with warm summerlakes. Growing up, hiking was a big hit. But also cultural life such as music events and visits to museums were part of my childhood.

20 I packed my things and moved to Finland where I’ve been happy ever since.

My mother is from Finland so we spent several weeks there every summer. I’ve always loved being in grandpas little cottage by the lake, picking blueberries and looking for exciting tree shapes in the forest.

Where do you find your inspiration? I am inspired by many things that I see around me. It can be something as simple as a glass falling down and breaking into thousand pieces, or the breathtaking view from a high tower. What I do in my freetime reflects the ideas I have for my art. I`ve always loved travelling and different cultures. My family itself is a big mix of cultures and my husband (from south America and Sweden) completes the big mix of inspiration that comes out of languages, music, art and food.

The contrast of the messy, fast but awesome big-city-life and my love for nature in all its shapes made me who I am today. At the age of

My first collection is very graphic and forestanimal inspired. Let’s see where the journey goes next!

dian perspective

I’m a big fan of art. I like to change up and rotate the artwork around my house every season; I like to browse through my collection of prints (I can’t have enough) and select the pieces that best represent the mood of the moment. I like dreamy images as well as graphic elements and quotes That’s why I selected the work of Puldefranck, Dan Isaac Wallin, Lucky Me Studios and How Are You.

People who know me well would be surprised that I picked the table tray by Nadja Wedin Design. I usually shy away from bold, colourful patterns, but I couldn’t get this one out of my head! It’s so whimsical, pretty and sweet, but also elegant. It would be a nice statement piece in my monochromatic living room.

Finally, a home is not complete without a quality scented candle - Skandinavisk’s products are fantastic.

Marble is very hot right now, and adding small decorative elements is the best way to incorporate the trend into your home without breaking the bank. For me, this pillow case by How Are You is a must, and would be a perfect accessory in my black & white bedroom. Classic designs like the white stoneware vase by Karin Elvy and the black bucket bag by Moyi Moyi never go out of style. Timeless and beautiful simplicity.

Wish list

ON MY

Time is flying by so quickly when you have small children and it is easy to think that you’re going to remember what they could do, say and did at different ages. But no, you don’t. The set of 12 notebooks from Jollygoodfellow is perfect - one for each month and easy to have close by to write down the new word they just learned for instance. Add a few printed Instagram pictures for visual goodies and save year by year in the beautiful boxes.

MARIA SOXBO

Blogger, Husligheter.se

As a stylist, I’m dependant on having a everyday bag that holds a lot of different things. This beautiful Tote Bag from Moyi Moyi would be perfect for me, and I really like the details that enables it to change in size depending on your needs. Another good reason is that it is produced by hand in Nigeria with consideration for the people who live there.

ELIN HERMANSSON

Stylist, Plaza Interiör Magazine

Curious about what other design experts are wanting for Christmas? We asked a few of our friends to tell you what’s on their wish lists for this season!

The combination of a message with an attitude, graphical style and lightning is irresistable. For me who likes to challenge standards, this is just right and would be perfect to light up my dark hallway.

EM FEXEUS

Blogger, Emmas Designblogg

Sailor striped is said to be big next year, as well as sailor tattoos with old boats, mermaids and seas. This is a perfect print for a trendy city wall.

STEFAN NILSSON

Trendexpert, Designbloggarna.se

You could say I just fell for this pot when I found it. It was something about the nose. I like that it is indefinably, and that each and everyone get to decide what kind of animal it is. It could also be a modern classic, a Lisa Larsson of our time.

CAMILLA FĂœRST

Interior designer, Allt i Hemmet Magazine

37

My cousins kid Mathilda is so wonderful, I could give her everything she’s looking at. But that’s not really possible. But of course she is getting a christmas gift, or two, or three... The lovely set of sweatshirt and hat from Darling oh my would fit her perfectly.

LINDA ÅHMAN Stylist

At Formex, I was standing close to Studio Ljung & Ljung, and I got to see their wonderful Bamboo Lamps up close. They would look really good in my home.

CAMILLA EDFORS Designer

Jussi from Jollygoodfellow would be great in my home. I really appreciate the playfulness in how three sticks and a cone has become a interpretation of Philippe Starcks cleancut lemon squeezer, and that you don’t know if it is a mockery or a tribute - or just playing without any criticism.

LINA JOHANSSON Designer

38

I really like the hangers LEAF. Simple and practical as hangers, and a beautiful decoration for the wall when they are empty.

EVA LEVIN Designer

During the last couple of months we’ve added so many new talented designers in our shop, and I’m especially glad to have lot’s of new lamps. I really fell in love with Almo from Calabaz, now I just have to find a good spot for it in our house.
