elcome — and welcome back to many of you — to the Northern Lights Auktion! What a wonderful evening to honor our mothers and our heritage while supporting the Nordic Heritage Museum. We are extremely grateful for the Auktion Committee, the wonderful donations, and the generous support offered to make this gala event a success year after year. As we celebrate the arrival of spring, we also reflect on the brave family members who immigrated to this wonderful country and our commitment to keeping our heritage and history alive. We are seeing the evolution of the next generation continuing our dream of a successful museum and a rich understanding of all that is Nordic and where our legacy began. This auction supports the Museum’s exhibits, festivals, films, featured artists, and children’s programs, all of which ensure the continuing story of our place in this world. We have a staff formed of knowledgeable, experienced, committed, and spirited people. They work hard to keep us connected to our mother countries and their artists, writers, and musicians. They provide us with new exhibits while retaining, documenting, and cataloging precious bits of our history. Old traditions and new experiences blend in the events the museum provides. This network of staff and volunteers is dedicated to ensuring that the vision of the new museum to be built on Market Street becomes a fantastic reality. It has been a pleasure again to work with the Museum staff under the direction of Mary Bond. Their talent in coordinating all the tasks needed to keep a timeline on target culminates tonight. We wish you an enjoyable evening: time spent with old and new friends, a menu that celebrates Nordic and American influences, and the opportunity to purchase unique items and experiences. We are grateful for your generous giving and support. Warmest Regards from the Auktion Committee,

Linda Christenson Co-Chair of the 2014 Northern Lights Auktion

Donna Pedersen Co-Chair of the 2014 Northern Lights Auktion

elcome to the Nordic Heritage Museum’s 29th Annual Northern Lights Auktion! We have an excellent gala event planned for you this year, with many opportunities to support the Museum by bidding on a wide variety of live and silent lots. This year’s program features a special tribute, as we are celebrating former Board member Einar Pedersen and his lovely wife Emma. Einar and Emma have been longtime supporters of the Museum, and we are thrilled to honor them here tonight. I also wish to extend my gratitude to all who have made this important event possible: the Auktion Committee and our Auktion Co-Chairs Linda Christenson and Donna Pedersen, our volunteers, donors, staff, and, of course, you. Since opening our doors to the public in April 1980, the Nordic Heritage Museum remains the only museum in the United States dedicated to celebrating the culture and heritage of the five Nordic countries. Our dedication to developing diverse and innovative educational and programmatic experiences for adults and children is our most important directive, and the annual auction provides critical funding for these programs. This year’s Fund-A-Need will help further our efforts of sharing Nordic heritage with the next generation. Please support these important endeavors by bidding high and bidding often! Your continued support of our Museum has moved us closer than ever to realizing our goal for a new, dedicated facility on Market Street. This year we endeavor to begin the final design and permitting phase in anticipation of groundbreaking in early 2016. The new Museum will expand our ability to develop the very best in both cutting-edge and traditional programming and will serve as a beacon for Nordic culture in the United States. Thank you for attending this evening’s event and bidding on our auction lots in support of the Museum!

Honoree Spotlight Einar and Emma Pedersen hold a special place at the Nordic Heritage Museum. Einar’s parents, Einar and Herbjørg, were involved with the Museum from the very beginning, and it was former Board Member Susan Hanson, Einar’s sister, who convinced Einar to join the Board of Trustees once she had completed her own term of service. As a long-standing member of the Executive Committee and Maritime Task Force, Einar has provided unprecedented guidance and leadership to the Museum for over a decade. Einar and Emma’s promotion and support of the Museum’s Capital Campaign has been an invaluable asset to the Museum’s efforts to fulfill its promise of a mission-built permanent home on Market Street. While the Pedersen family hails from Norway, both Einar and Emma were born in Washington state and have always called the Puget Sound area home. We are proud to recognize Einar and Emma Pedersen, as well as the extended Pedersen family, as an invaluable part of the Nordic Heritage Museum legacy.

LookiNg toWarD the NeW NorDiC Heritage muSeum Thanks to the generous support of our funders, donors, and direction from the Board of Trustees, the Museum officially begins the next exciting phase of the journey to the new home of the Nordic Heritage Museum. This summer will mark the start of the 18-month process of permitting and finalizing designs for architecture and exhibitions, with completion of this phase expected in January 2016. The Museum is collaborating with award-winning architecture firm Mithun, which was founded in Seattle by the son of a Norwegian immigrant in 1949 and is a national leader in sustainable design and urban planning. Exhibition design is handled by Ralph Appelbaum Associates, whose list of projects includes the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Gates Foundation Visitor Center. Once the design and permitting process is completed, the project will be ready for groundbreaking in early

6

2016, with construction and exhibition installation expected to take an additional 18 months. Groundbreaking in 2016 is dependent upon fulfillment of the remaining $16 million fundraising goal. Commitments need to be secured by the end of this year. This is an ambitious goal, but securing the remaining pledges, with the ability for donors to make pledge payments over the course of the following three years, will allow this project to become a reality. The time is now. Contact the Museum to learn how you can make your mark with the building of this legacy.

How the Auction Works ExpressPay™ All guests must register for ExpressPay™ service at Registration. By registering for this service, you avoid standing in line to pay for your purchases at the end of the night. Sign up for ExpressPay™ by providing the registration assistant with a VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover credit card, or a signed check made out to Nordic Heritage Museum, which will be run through the payment system and kept on file for the evening. During the Live Auction, you will receive a receipt of your total spending during the Silent Auction. At the close of the auction, your purchases will be totaled and charged as directed. You may proceed directly to the Secure Release area to collect your purchases without stopping at the payment checkout lines. Arrangements may be made for a later pickup date at the Nordic Heritage Museum. All items must be picked up no later than 30 days following the auction. In the event you did not purchase any items, your charge slip or check will be returned ‘VOID’. For questions please contact Deputy Director of Operations, Sandra Nestorovic at (206) 789-5707 ext. 36.

Silent Auction All silent auction sections open at 5:00 p.m. The sections close at staggered times throughout the evening. Please see page 2 for silent auction closing times. Each item offered in the silent auction will have a bid sheet placed near it. Make a bid by writing your bidder number opposite the amount you wish to bid on the form. Please press hard— you are making three copies. You do not have to take the next available amount on the form but may skip ahead to a higher bid price. The next bidder must bid higher than you or bid the guaranteed price to be successful.

Minimum Bid A minimum bid has been established for each silent auction item. You may not bid below this amount.

11

Guaranteed Bid Most silent auction items have a “Guaranteed Bid” price. To guarantee that you are the successful bidder, enter your bid number in the box next to the “Guaranteed Bid” price. This will instantly make you the successful bidder and owner of the auction lot.

Closing You may bid on any item in any silent auction section until the section is closed. Announcements will be made prior to each closing. At the posted closing time, a silent auction closer will circle the winning bid on each form and collect the forms.

Golden Raffle During the Silent Auction, guests will be invited to participate in the Golden Raffle. Only 150 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winner of the raffle will be announced at the start of the Live Auction, and will be allowed to select one Live Auction item. The live auction will begin during dinner and continue without interruption until all items have been auctioned. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or a bid spotter can accept your bid. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over the previous bid. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be deemed a legal contract with that bidder to purchase the item. The auctioneer reserves the right to settle any and all disputes, complaints, misunderstandings, errors, and sales at his discretion.

12

Fund-A-Need During the live auction, the auctioneer will announce the opportunity to support Fund-A-Need. Please see page 25 for more information about Fund-A-Need and how it supports the Museum. The auctioneer will invite you to hold up your card to pledge $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000 or $10,000 toward this cause. Hold your card in the air until the auctioneer reads your bidder number aloud. You will pay your pledge along with your auction purchases. You may, with our thanks, hold up your auction bid card multiple times to pledge more than one amount.

Checkout (located at Registration) The “bank” will open at 4:30 p.m. Payment by the successful bidder may be made at any time during the evening after the bank opens. Please allow 30 minutes following the close of each silent auction section and 10 minutes following the sale of each live auction item before requesting a receipt. All guests must register for ExpressPay™ service at Registration. Payment in full is mandatory the evening of the auction. Only VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards, and personal checks will be accepted as payment.

Secure Release The Secure Release area will open at 8:30 p.m. Successful ExpressPay™ bidders will receive a report of their purchases at their table shortly after the close of bidding for the Silent Auction. Following the Live Auction, bidders may then proceed directly to the Secure Release area to collect their purchases or arrange for a later pickup date and then depart. All items must be removed the night of the auction, unless otherwise indicated. Larger items may be picked up at the Nordic Heritage Museum at a later scheduled date if needed, but no later than 30 days following the auction. Any items that are not removed or scheduled for a later pickup within 30 days will be considered donations to the Nordic Heritage Museum. All sales are final. Fund-A-Need The Nordic Heritage Museum is here because of you. Your support allowed the Museum to open its doors over 30 years ago and keeps those doors open to Ballard and its national and global visitors. While maintaining our relationships with long-time supporters we also engage new audiences, nurturing our roots while expanding our branches wider. Fund-A-Need is a vital aspect of the Museum’s growth, allowing us to create a legacy for future generations by presenting immersive cultural experiences through exhibitions, festivals, and community and educational programs. Last year the Museum presented over 100 public programs, with such highlights as the record-breaking exhibition Scissors for a Brush, the 18th season of the Mostly Nordic Chamber Music Series, PechaKucha in conjunction with the exhibition Bad Art?, the Soup & Cinema film series, and the crowd-pleasing Viking Days and Yulefest. Among the 55,000 visitors last year with whom we shared the Nordic spirit, the Museum served 6,000 children who participated in education programming and visited on school tours. But the Museum is not just here because of you. It is here for you, serving as a community gathering place for lutefisk dinners, Christmas bazaars, and jazz festivals, and hosting such community staples as the Norwegian Male Chorus and Scandinavian Language Institute. We hold dear our ancestors’ heritage with projects like the award-winning Voices of Ballard and Beyond while celebrating contemporary culture and interests with publications like the new Nordic Kultur magazine and the cinematic celebration the Nordic Lights Film Festival. These efforts help to decrease the distance between past and present, between the old country and the new, keeping our stories and our heritage not just alive but thriving. Support of tonight’s Fund-A-Need demonstrates your commitment to the Museum, allowing us to continue our commitment to you.
