A Note from the Volunteer Coordinator
Important Fall Dates:
Fall is once again upon us! We’ve wrapped up the last details of Viking Days, which was a huge success, and our busy fall schedule is kicking into high gear. Between Soup and Cinema, the Wallenberg Dinner, the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, and Yulefest, as well as an exciting oral history project, and our regular day-to -day schedule, we’ll hopefully see a lot of you!
Yulefest Planning Meeting Wednesday, October 9, 1 PM
Wallenberg Dinner Thursday, October 24, 5:30 PM
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Tuesday, October 29, 5:30 PM
In this edition of the Viking Bugle, you’ll see long lists of volunteers to whom we owe our sincere gratitude. I would like to take a moment to recognize those volunteers who do various tasks behind the scenes or off-site, editing newsletters, writing grants, tallying hours, doing research, baking, making phone calls and writing minutes. All of your contributions are truly valued.
Yulefest Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24,
On-line and In Color The Viking Bugle is now available on-line and in color!
This October I am taking a little time off to get married and take a honeymoon. I am overwhelmed by the generosity, love, support and well-wishes I have received from all of you. I truly appreciate it. As always, don’t hesitate to drop me a line if you’ve moved, your volunteer status has changed, or you have questions or suggestions. I am grateful for your submissions to the Viking Bugle, and any feedback you may have.
If you are reading the electronic version, but would like a paper copy instead, just let me know. I’m open to suggestions to improve your Viking Bugle experience, so your feedback is welcomed!
Have a lovely Fall, and I hope to see you soon! ~Michael

FALL EXHIBITIONS
Eino – 50 Years of Making Sculptures
September 27 —D ecember 7, 2013
Dressing Swedish: From Hazelius to Salander
September 13—November 10, 2013 Dressing Swedish will explore the complex relationship between fashion and traditional folk costumes. Garments, fabric, and designs are used to create complex family trees, erase time periods, and articulate multiple places of belonging. Through displays featuring costumes both traditional and recreated by contemporary designers, along with new urban dress from Sami and Swedish designers, the exhibition will tackle the notion of what it means to “dress Swedish” and how this has developed over time.
Eino Romppanen, known to the art world simply as Eino, was born in Finland and has lived and worked in the United States since 1962. Over these years, Eino has worked in 22 countries, and his commissioned works can be found in all five Nordic countries, including the Stockholm Stadium, once host to the Olympic Games. Throughout his 50 years as an artist, Eino has explored various forms of expression, ranging from bronze and marble portraits to abstract monoliths to solarpowered sculpture that silently rotates. Focusing primarily on Eino’s stone sculptures, the exhibition at the Nordic Heritage Museum will provide a window into the development of Eino’s formal and thematic repertoire, his preoccupation with the relationship between nature and culture, human body and landscape, as well as his exploration of sculptural form.

Employee Volunteer Matching Programs Many local companies recognize the volunteer hours their employees and retirees contribute to non-profit organizations by matching the volunteer hours with a cash donation. This is a great way to make your volunteer contribution go farther and a good reason to keep track of your volunteer hours! Find out if your company matches volunteer hours, and let us know! Here are some local companies that offer a volunteer match program. If your company matches volunteer hours and is not listed here, let me know.
