From the Volunteer Coordinator INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Volunteer Appreciation
As we put another busy spring behind us and get ready for the next big event, Viking 1 Days, our event schedule is a little lighter, and we could almost consider taking a deep breath to relax for a moment…But then we 2 would have to reconsider because things are still quite busy behind the scenes! We 3 are making great progress on our Capital Campaign goals and have started the 4 design on our new building project; are in the midst of creating a brand new, in-house 5 exhibit as well as producing an exciting new culinary conference; and of course, undertaking the day- to- day activities of being a Museum. And much more! In other 6 words, never a dull moment at the Nordic 7 Heritage Museum!

From the Volunteer Coordinator/Interim Volunteer Coordinator Museum News: Staff Update Museum News: Department Highlight Volunteer Awards Volunteer News: In Memory Spring Tea Highlights Volunteer Council Special Thanks
As usual, Viking Days will be our biggest event of the summer. This year it takes place on August 22 and 23, and will feature a pancake breakfast each day, a salmon dinner, Nordic delicacies at the Taste of Scandinavia, the Viking Grill and Valhalla Beer Garden; kids crafts, performers, demonstrators, a Viking encampment; and the whole thing kicks off with our second annual Run Like a Viking 5K, at 8am on Saturday. There will be time to do it all: Run the race, enjoy the festival, and volunteer as well! As you know, many hands make light work, and we need over 200 volunteers throughout the weekend to pull it off. Information about how to sign up , as well as some special volunteer opportunities are described in detail in the Volunteer Opportunities section. This summer, as you may know, I’ll be taking off for maternity leave, so you’ll have the great good fortune of working exclusively with Gloria Chenoweth, Interim Volunteer Coordinator, until October and then with the two of us through the holidays. Please continue to sign up for
volunteer opportunities as you always have— especially Viking Days! Gloria will be depending on your help as she gets up to speed, and will certainly appreciate your support! And my heartfelt thanks for all of your support of me during this exciting transition in my life. I hope you have a wonderful summer, and we’ll see you soon! —Michael
Greetings From the Interim Volunteer Coordinator, Gloria Chenoweth It is my pleasure to introduce myself as your Interim Volunteer Coordinator beginning Monday, June 29. My goal is to continue the fine work already accomplished by Michael, and work diligently to maintain its integrity. As a volunteer, docent and intern with the Nordic Heritage Museum, I’ ve had the pleasure of meeting with many of you already and look forward to reaching out to you all in the near future. Being part of this museum has been a dream of mine since moving to Ballard in 1990. My career as a graphic designer, fine artist and teacher led to my recent completion in Museum Studies with the University of Washington. The coming months will be a busy and exciting time and I can’t wait to get started! Cheers, Gloria Chenoweth

Museum News Departmental Highlights Collections Department Update:
Exhibits Highlight:
Keep Clam and Carry On: The Ivar Haglund Story
We have applied in June for a $7,550.00 grant to 4Culture.org, to fund the digitization of 100 select, 16mm films from the NHM permanent collection. The project is in partnership with the University of Washington “Moving Image Collections,” with their Special Collections Department.
New Museum Progress Report: A successful symposium was held in Copenhagen on June 11 to discuss the proposed core content for the new museum and the possibility of future partnerships and loans of Nordic artifacts for the new facility. Representatives from 16 cultural institutions throughout the entire Nordic Region participated in the symposium, which was hosted and supported by The Nordic Council of Ministers. The museum was represented by Eric Nelson, Kirstine Bendix Knudsen, Curatorial Consultant Nancy Zinn, Content Developer Mary Beth Byrne (Appelbaum Association), and NHM Trustee Tom W. Malone. A similar Symposium will take place here in Seattle in September – this time with the museum’s American partners. Three staff members from the Nordic Council of Ministers will fly in from Copenhagen to attend the symposium.
On view August 14–November 8
Ivar Haglund was a businessman, folksinger, showman, and unique character who, over a highly successful career as a restaurateur and entertainer, became a Puget Sound legend. His publicity stunts, pronouncements, pranks, and iconic restaurants have become part of Seattle’s unique character as a city. Keep Clam and Carry On: The Ivar Haglund Story will highlight the fascinating life of this seafood magnate, emphasizing his innovation, entrepreneurship, and Scandinavian heritage. The opening of the exhibition will coincide with the re-opening festivities of the original flagship restaurant, Acres of Clams, providing a timely opportunity for Nordic Heritage Museum visitors to re-discover this beloved Seattle icon. *See page 8 to learn more about getting involved in this exclusive exhibition experience!
Now on sale in the Museum Store…Iittala! Come see this gorgeous collection of Finnish ceramic and glassware— cups, bowls, platters, pitchers and glasses. They’re selling fast!

We celebrate the life and mourn the passing of our dear friend and supporter of the Museum. We offer our deepest condolences to her loved ones.
Volunteer Council Volunteers at the Nordic Heritage Museum play an active role in all aspects of the Museum, from the day-to-day operations to planning and executing major events. The Volunteer Council serves as a representative voice for the Volunteer corps, as will as an advisory committee to the Volunteer Coordinator. Meetings are held quarterly and followed by a potluck open to all. To find out more, contact the Volunteer Coordinator! The Volunteer Council is actively seeking a secretary! If you are interested in learning more, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at gloriac@nordicmuseum.org. The next Volunteer Council will be held on Monday, September 14 at 10:30 am, followed by the Volunteer potluck at noon. We hope to see you there!
The Spring Tea was a terrific success, with over 70 people in attendance, and raising over $500 to benefit the Museum. Our sincerest thanks to Mina Larsen and friends for coordinating and executing the decorations, entertainment and fashion show, and Sandy Haug for coordinating the goodies; to all the bakers who contributed treats; to the Volunteer Council members for their assistance and presence; and to members of the Monday and Thursday Crew for helping with the beverages and the clean up; and everyone else who helped! We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!
Special Thanks!
