Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a delightful Christmas holiday. We’ve had another great year at the Nordic Heritage Museum. Once again, our special events and programs drew fantastic audience attendance and press coverage. The Ivar Exhibition – Keep Clam and Carry on - was an especially fun experience for all of us, and Yulefest had the highest and revenue numbers yet. As always, last year’s tremendous success was the result of thousands of hours of hard work contributed by our stellar corps of volunteers. I want to personally thank you for all of your support and dedication to the Nordic Heritage Museum. Since our inception, volunteer support has been the essence of our mission to share the Nordic spirit with the community. Each and every one of you has helped make a profound impact on the heart and soul of this institution, and nothing we do is possible without you. We are gearing up for an exciting phase of the museum’s progress towards its new home. Thanks to the support of the King County Building for Culture Initiative, the generosity of many private individuals, and the recent award of a $4 million grant from The A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation of Denmark, we are on schedule for the construction of our new facility. Our funding gap has narrowed and we look forward to the launch of the public campaign this spring. We’ll have more details for you at our Annual Meeting, on February 18th, when we’ll also review highlights from 2015, introduce our new slate of Trustees, and answer your questions. Also, please visit our new website, at www.nordicmuseum.org, It has a more contemporary look and is easier to
From the Volunteer Coordinator I’m pleased to return to my position as your full-time Volunteer Coordinator, after several months off, and a part-time schedule in the fall. For the time being, I’ll be working Tuesday-Friday, with the occasional Monday as needed. Thank you for making Gloria feel welcome and showing her the ropes, and many thanks to Gloria for stepping into the role during our hectic festival season! Luckily we are keeping Gloria, and you can find her in the Marketing Department Monday through Friday. Have a look inside for more staff updates. This year is looking like another very busy one, with all the usual events and programs—and many more of course! But with your help it should be fun, interesting and successful. Take a look inside for more information about our exciting line-up, and mark your calendars! While you’re at it, save the date for the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Award Ceremony, on Wednesday, June 1st at 5:30 pm. And, in case you were curious, the countdown to the new Museum has begun! Two years from now, we will be open and operating in our brand new building. Are you ready? Stay tuned for more updates on our progress as we move forward. Thanks again for making 2015 great and we look forward to more fun in 2016! I am happy to be back, and look forward to catching up with all of you in the next few months! See you soon! Michael

Staff Update Welcome Sune Sandling!
Returning: Registrar, Ariane Westin-McCaw, and Volunteer Coordinator, Michael Ide, are now both back from maternity leave. You’ll find Ariane in the office Monday through Thursday, and Michael inTuesday through Friday. More importantly, here is what they were up to during their time off!
Former volunteer Sune Sandling is our new Facilities Coordinator, and we couldn’t be more pleased! You can find him in the Main Office Tuesday through Friday afternoons. Here is a word from him:
How do you pronounce my name? Say, "suu-NEH sahnd-LING"” Thorleif I was born in the Seattle-area, but we soon moved back to our hometown near Östersund, Sweden, where I spent my formative years. Odd trivia: my family dates back to the year 970. I earned a BFA in interior design (with an emphasis on furniture design) from Cornish College of the Arts here in Seattle back in the 1990’s. My career has included being a model maker and design assistant at NBBJ, residential construction, woodworking, display and store design for IKEA, store planning and retail fixture design for REI’s fleet of stores, and an exhibit designer and preparator here at the Nordic Heritage Museum on a pro-bono/ contract basis.. Currently, I’m the Facilities Coordinator at the NHM as well as earning my Certificate in Museum Studies at the University of Washington. I live in West Seattle with my wife and toddler daughter. Things I am passionate about include: cooking, bicycles, mid-century everything, history, museums, the art of craft cocktails, typefaces, and a hundred other things I can’t think of or haven’t yet discovered.
Naomi
Shuffling: We couldn't part with our Interim Registrar and Interim Volunteer Coordinator, and were thrilled to be able to keep them on. So you’ll be able to find our Collections Specialist, Claire Wilbert, on Fridays; and our Marketing and Communication Coordinator, Gloria Chenoweth, Monday-Friday.
Departures: This fall, we said farewell to the following staff members, who have all decided to move forward in new directions, and have new adventures. We thank them for their hard work, and wish them luck! Stephanie Maurer Bryce Terry Kelly Matson Jeremy Ehrlich

Volunteer News In Memory of Rich Johnson We are devastated to lose Rich. This past fall, after being diagnosed with cancer, Rich suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on one side. He passed away 2 weeks later, peacefully and surrounded by family. Rich happened to suffer this stroke while visiting Yulefest — usually he would have been volunteering all day, both days; a combination of bussing tables for Edla in the Nordic Café, and collecting money in the Kaffestuga. At the time of his stroke, he was in a place he loved, surrounded by people who loved him. With Rich’s passing, we’ve lost our brightest light, our biggest fan, and one of our most universally beloved volunteers. Thank you to all who made Rich’s time with the Museum so meaningful. And thanks for providing him with what he would surely have considered a successful memorial— standing room only. Cheers, Rich! We miss you.
Celebrating 60 Years! On October 8, longtime volunteers Obert and Marietta Ronnestad celebrated 60 years of marriage! Obert and Marietta continue to volunteer at Yulefest, responsible for the rømmegrøt that you have hopefully been lucky enough to taste! Hearty congratulations, and thank you for your delicious contribution to the Nordic Heritage Museum!
Volunteer Council Open Positions The Volunteer Council seeks a Chair to stay up to date with the goings-on at the Museum, preside over meetings, and serve as point of contact between volunteers, staff and the Council. Meetings are quarterly, on the second Monday of January, March, June and September. The council is also seeking a permanent secretary to assist the Chair by taking and reporting the minutes. Contact Michael for more info: 206-789-5707x12
Submit to the Viking Bugle! Send any submissions to michaeli@nordicmuseum.org.
If you have photographs or memories of Rich, or anyone else who passed away this year, please send them to me. I will create a slide show in remembrance to present at the Spring Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on June 1st.
Do you have an announcement, story or article to share with the volunteers of the Nordic Heritage Museum? Is your contact information or volunteer status up to date? Send me an update!
Meetings and Potlucks The volunteer council meets to 4 times per year to keep up to date on Museum happenings, offer constructive feedback and ideas, and etc. It is followed by a potluck to which all volunteers and staff are invited. Don’t miss it! Mark your calendars for the remaining dates: March 14 June 13 September 12 Meeting at 10:30, Potluck at noon.
