Day 1: arrival & Oulu Arrival to Oulu where Finnature’s guide will be waiting to welcome us. Oulu is a port on the northeast shore of the Gulf of Bothnia. It is situated barely 150 miles south of the Arctic Circle in the ‘armpit’ of Miss-Finland. Oulu is the place for Owls. During these two days we are concentrating on finding the five most wanted birds: Pygmy, Tengmalm’s, Ural, Hawk and Great Grey Owl. We will have a try for our first Owl already at the first night. In deep taiga forest Crested Tits and other warning passerines might give away the male Pygmy Owl perching in a tree. Night in Finlandia Hotel Airport Oulu. Day 2: Liminganlahti We start the day with a special effort to find the Terek Sandpiper. Oulu is one of the last places in Finland where this rare bird still breeds. There are only few pairs breeding in Finland and this is one area where Finnature’s local knowledge really comes to the fore. Other waders in this morning might include Temminck’s Stint with its butterfly display as well as Ringed and Little Ringed Plovers. Around noon we will visit at Liminganlahti, an internationally important wetland that harbors thousands of waders and ducks. Hundreds of young Whooper Swans and
10
Common Cranes spend their summer in the bay area. Usual sightings here include White-tailed Eagle and Marsh Harrier and also Peregrine is a daily visitor from the nearby bog. The spectacular Ruff lek takes place here in Liminganlahti. Different colored males are concentrated on winning the females’ attention sometimes it gets really exciting! After watching the tournament we will enjoy a lovely lunch at the Liminganlahti Visitor Centre. In the afternoon we will go for the notorious Ural Owl. This elusive Owl is the most difficult of them all to see – they have better eyes than we! With careful approach this beautiful pale colored bird can be seen. Although lying on the threshold of Lapland, some ‘night singers’ are found in Oulu area in most years. In the late evening excursion there might be a chance to find Thrush Nightingale and Blyth’s Reed Warbler – and perhaps even Corncrake. River and Marsh Warblers are not entirely excluded either. Short-eared Owls are present and in some years also Long-31 eared Owls come to these latitudes. All such excursions are always optional. Night in Finlandia Hotel Airport Oulu.
BIRD WATCHING | MIN 6 PAX
Day 3: Oulu Today we will head to the forests to look for Eurasian Three-toed and Black Woodpeckers. Other possible forest species include such as Black Grouse which might be still lekking. With luck we might even come across with a lekking Capercaillie! We will stay in the forest landscape and have finally a try for the magnificent Great Grey Owl. No-one will be left cold in the presence of this large breath-taking bird. In the evening it is time to visit the most common Owl in Finland - Tengmalm’s Owl. Most years also the wandering-natured Northern Hawk Owl breeds in the area. Night in Finlandia Hotel Airport Oulu. Day 4: Oulu- Kuusamo From Oulu the tour continues towards north and east to Kuusamo. Along the way we will stop to scan some of the extensive forest bogs and lakes. Kuusamo stands out as the top-level birding place in Finland where also the annual national ‘bird-race’ is run. In Kuusamo we can expect to encounter a real feast for eye in the expansive taiga forests. While Goldeneye, Wood Sandpiper and Brambling are common, the real draw here is the undisputed list of eastern and northern species: Redflanked Bluetail, Little and Rustic Bunting, Arctic Warbler, Siberian Tit, and Siberian Jay – just to name a few. Other species might include Bohemian
OULU
Waxwing, Great Grey Shrike and Common Rosefinch. Night in Sokos Hotel Kuusamo. Day 5: Kuusamo We will make an early morning excursion to see the Red-flanked Bluetail. The climb up to Valtavaara Hill for Redflanked Bluetail is steep and the birds are never guaranteed to be singing, though the view is magnificent. The terrain is mostly easy to walk but will involve one or two steep uphill climbs, so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this excursion. During an afternoon trip to a dry pine forest our aim is to see Siberian Tit and Parrot Crossbill. The lakes nearby provide good birding sites with Smew, Rednecked Grebe and other waterfowl. Beautiful bogs are home to waders such as Spotted Redshank, Broad-billed Sandpiper and Jack Snipe. In most years Hawk Owl breeds in Kuusamo region. Although being a diurnal bird, Hawk Owl is surprisingly hard to find. Hopefully we will end our day with images of this wanderer of the wild in our minds. Night in Sokos Hotel Kuusamo. Day 6: Kuusamo There is plenty room for Grouses in forests surrounding Kuusamo. This morning we will go for Grouses. We will head to the vast forests that extend around Kuusamo and look for the Capercaillie and Black and Willow
11
Grouse. A moderate walk to the beautiful old forest area, Oulanka National Park, might give us sightings of the elusive Hazel Grouse and Siberian Jay. A natural preserve adjoining the Paanajärvi National Park on the Russian side of the border, Oulanka is the westernmost extreme of the taiga or boreal coniferous forest zone. In addition to the spruce forests with beard lichen and thick moss, lichenous upland pine forests, wild river valleys and watery aapa mires, Oulanka also preserves wild life’s innumerable rarities. Its river valley flora and fauna is a distinctive mix of northern, eastern and southern species and you can find e.g. Calypso here. Narrow shouldered Siberian spruce forests, home of Brown Bears, Golden Eagles and Dippers create a strong sense of the boreal riverine wilds. Night in Sokos hotel Kuusamo. Day 7: Kuusamo- Oulu - departure Optional pre-breakfast birdwatching in Kuusamo. After breakfast we will start our journey back to Oulu for afternoon flight.

The butterfly display of Temminck’s Stint and Ruff’s pantomime show are worth to see while Red-necked Phalaropes entertain us by spinning around in small fjell lakes. To the north and east the scenery beyond fishing port of Vardö is more dramatic. Here the landscape is dominated by stark sea-cliffs, stony fells and sift flowing rivers. The landscape is wild and calm – with a lot of variations. Sometimes it even resembles the Moon! We will take a boat trip from Vardö to the famous seabird colony in a small island of Hörnoya (weather-permitting). The Hörnoya Nature Reserve is the easternmost of the protected bird colonies in Norway. Northern Alcids breed here along with Kittiwakes and Shags: Common and Brünnich’s Guillemots, Black Guillemots, Razorbills and Puffins make sure that we will have an unforgettable day! There are also great opportunity to photograph these birds. Nights in Hotel Vardö.
MIN 10 PAX | BIRD WATCHING
Day 10: Varanger Peninsula, Båtsfjord We will also do an excursion to Hamninberg - the end of Europe connected by a road with Vardö. The road to Hamninberg is something special. The expression "the end of Europe" comes to mind when you travel here. The landscape is wild and calm - with a lot of variations. Sometimes it looks like you are on the moon, the next minute you mistake the beaches for those in the Mediterranean! We can also make a short excursion on foot to the Tundra and to the bog lands. Especially latter should be steaming with birdlife: breeding Red-throated Diver and arctic waders. We will do some sea watching from the Hamningberg, as well, hoping to see some Gannets, Fulmars, Skuas or even some whales! Today we will drive back to the bottom of the Varanger fjord and continue along the Tana riverside and visit the delta area in Norway, which is famous for its molting Goosanders and breeding waders and its colony of Arctic Terns. There we also have fair chances to see some seals. Furthermore, there is a traditional breeding site of Gyr Falcon on the nearby rocks!
14
From the delta we will continue over to the high altitude tundra and to Båtsfjord, a small harbor town on the northern edge of Varanger peninsula. The tundra is the home of Ptarmigan and Gyr Falcon. Also Long-tailed Skua and Dotterel are often seen just by the roadside. And, with luck, the magnificent Snowy Owl is sometimes seen on the fells. Night in Båtsfjord hotel. Day 11: back to Finland, Ivalo After breakfast it is time to head back south towards Finland. On the way back to Ivalo we will do some birding. Night in Ivalo hotel. Day 12: Ivalo Before noon we have still last chances to do some birding nearby Ivalo. With luck we can find some Bohemian Waxwings or even singing Arctic Warbler! But the time to say goodbye to the barren landscape is at hand...

Also you and the other guests will have a suitable flannel shirt and felt hat. First, we will explore the history of tar in an exhibition, which takes you to a journey from the living tree into the barrel and then further down the river towards the world market. After a visit to the café we hop on to a long traditional tar boat and follow the old route towards the sea. Luckily, nowadays these boats have engines to guarantee a comfortable and secure cruise. As the smoke ascends, we get to load the barrel and learn how to use the finished product of tar. The pleasant smell of tar will follow you home, as each of our guests applies tar to a small wooden souvenir to take home with them. Our kitchen is known for its quality selection of foods. Our menus follow the changing seasons, combining the flavors of the pure Northern nature and traditional French cuisine in a modern way. The fresh, domestic flavors of spring and summer, the yield of the waters, fresh autumn berries, mushrooms and game all offer wonderful experiences worth trying. The dark winter complements our selection with deeper flavors brought out by longer cooking times and different seasonings. Each changing month and season brings something new onto our kitchen work boards, with an emphasis on our Northern flavors.

Our specialty "Grandma’s Kitchen" just like Grandma used to make, traditional Northern Ostrobothnian food at its best. History It appears difficult to guess the true age of this wooden building. It was first mentioned in documents in 1850. It is known that the oldest part of the house used to be used to store big boat parts and motors. Today this traditional restaurant still radiates the worker charm of the former storehouse - high rooms with dark, sturdy wooden walls. The rooms were also previously used to store sugar and salt. Pikisaari is a small island which was well known for its shipbuilding industry. The restaurant was named after one of the last ships which was built on the island: Sokeri-Jussi (Sugar-Jack). This boat waited for years in the present-day Restaurant Sokeri-Jussi for its motor. It is said that a consultant from a Finnish
sugar firm had fallen into a sugar barrel during work. A while later he was building a boat in Oulu for the sugar export and gave it the name Sokeri-Jussi. Unfortunately the boat was sold during the Second World War to Italy, where it supposedly melted away in the Mediterranean Sea.
