Director’s Message 2025

Welcome to the 2025 Norfolk County Heritage & Culture Events, Exhibitions and Program Guide. I continue to be amazed by the creativity and ingenuity of the Heritage & Culture team when planning programming and activities for their respective communities.

Throughout the year, they host a variety of special events, handson workshops, concerts, theatre performances, camp programs, and present an engaging array of exhibits.

Kick off the year by attending the ever-popular Captain’s Polar Bear Levee at the Port Dover Harbour Museum on New Years Day; attend a Perogy Bee hosted by the Delhi Tobacco Museum & Heritage Centre; enjoy the Leaving Their Mark: Folk Artists of Norfolk exhibit at WHAM; or register your child for the Norfolk County Archives’ History Club.

2025 also has lots of fun in store for kids with March Break and Summer Camps and special holiday-themed programming.

For all the teachers and youth leaders out there, we invite you to contact us to find out more about our curriculum-based education programs that can be delivered onsite or in the classroom. These programs are hands-on, educational, engaging, and a wonderful way to expand your classroom programming.

We also provide valuable opportunities for youth volunteers through our youth mentorship programs. Through their participation in our programs, youth volunteers can accumulate volunteer hours, build a resume, and gain valuable skills and knowledge. Our youth mentorship program provides opportunities for experienced youth volunteers to mentor new volunteers. We also offer engaging and interesting co-op placements for high school students and provide internship opportunities.

Our goal continues to be to Inspire, Educate and Entertain and we hope that as you read through our 2025 Norfolk County Heritage & Culture Events, Exhibitions and Program Guide you’ll find something that will do just that.

We look forward to seeing you in 2025!

CARILLON 100

Norfolk’s War Memorial

A Century of Remembering

World War I, also known as the Great War, started in 1914 and lasted until 1918. During the four-year conflict, the Central Powers battled the Allied Powers that included Canada. Those who served experienced the horrors of trench warfare with unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. The Allied Powers were ultimately victorious but sadly by the time it was all over, more than 16 million people, soldiers and civilians alike, were dead.

In the fall of 1919, a mass meeting was called in Simcoe to consider a special tribute to memorialize Norfolk County’s war heroes, those that had fallen in battle during WWI. A committee was struck to decide on the type of memorial to be constructed, to choose an appropriate location, and to raise funds.

The committee’s decision to erect a stone tower, sixty feet in height, to contain a Carillon of 23 bells was an ambitious one but it demonstrated the respect and appreciation they held for all those who had made the ultimate sacrifice. The funds for construction were raised through public conscription in a county-wide campaign. The committee joined forces with the Simcoe High School War Memorial Committee and the Board of Education provided the site where the Memorial stands today.

The Norman architecture tower was designed by Sproatt and Rolph Architects and the Schultz Construction Company of Brantford erected the tower. It was built of Hagersville limestone, trimmed with Indiana Stone. The bells were ordered from the famous bell founders, Messrs. Gillette and Johnston, of Croydon, England.

The afternoon of Wednesday, June 17, 1925, was proclaimed a half-day holiday so that everyone could attend the dedication ceremony of Norfolk’s War Memorial. By all accounts, it was a beautiful day and thousands of people attended the inspirational ceremony. One of the largest parades in Norfolk’s history moved through downtown Simcoe to the Carillon Tower, led by the Boy Scouts and over 500 Great War Veterans.

The Waterford Star reported on June 18, 1925, “Dignified and impressive were the ceremonies that marked the unveiling of Norfolk’s magnificent War Memorial in the presence of an enormous assembly of citizens of Norfolk, adjoining counties and more distant communities yesterday

Next year on June 17, 2025, Norfolk County will hold a ceremony to rededicate Norfolk’s War Memorial to mark its 100th anniversary.

Carillon 100 will begin much the same as it did in 1925 with a large parade winding its way through the streets of Simcoe ending at the Carillon Tower where a rededication service will be held.

Norfolk’s War Memorial is a solemn and steadfast reminder of all those who fought and gave their lives in battle – the Great War, World War 2 and the Afghanistan conflict. We are indebted to each name on the Tower as each one represents one of Norfolk’s own and the sacrifice they made on our behalf.

We Will Remember Them.

Norfolk’s Stories in Stitches

MAY 1 – JUL 1

For centuries the traditional products of a woman’s life – the children they bore, the food they prepared, the clothing they made – were ephemeral; the children grew up, the food was consumed, the clothing was worn, then worn out, and finally discarded. One significant exception to this was the historical samplers and fancy needlework they created. These samplers were highly valued. They were meant to be displayed and passed down through generations.

Today, these samplers are considered both works of art and important pieces of the historical record stitched on cloth. Norfolk’s Stories in Stitches will showcase 19th and 20th century samplers from Norfolk County Heritage & Culture’s collection and examine what these textiles can tell us about the lives of the girls and women who made them.

EXHIBITS

Swords and Plowshares

Until FEB 28

Critical to Canada’s war effort was the battle on the “Industrial Front” fought by the factories of the nation, and no manufacturer modeled this better than the Cockshutt Plow Company. With a workforce comprised largely of women, their products served in the farmer’s field, the battlefield, and took flight in combat. This fascinating legacy carried on into the Cold War era.

Textile Tenacity

JUN 25 – SEP 27

Quilting is often thought of as a nostalgic hobby with a homey purpose. The truth is far more complicated. Quilts have been used for fundraising purposes for over a century. The funds that community quilting projects have raised have helped to build churches, equip hospitals and win wars. This exhibition explores this other purposeful side of quilting and the tenacity women show by raising money through crafts when their community is in need.
