Mermaid Parade Y

ou’ll see them posing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries—they are Norfolk’s cultural icon, the mermaid. Today, the mermaid is synonymous with civic pride, as it exemplifies Monticello Arcade Norfolk’s dedication to nurture the local arts community and to maintain a rapid pace of cultural and economic growth. Mermaid statues began dotting downtown in 2000, shortly after the city branded the image of a young, free-spirited mermaid as its official city symbol as part of the “Life Celebrated Daily” campaign. The city had been undergoing major revitalization efforts and the mermaid was a method of driving home the fact that a new Norfolk was being born. “We had some issues with the perception of Norfolk, both by those outside and inside,” says Bob Batcher, the city’s manager of public relations. “We needed a new brand.” In November 1999, attorney and well-known Norfolk advocate Peter Decker, Jr. introduced the idea of mermaid statues at a meeting with hundreds of business and civic leaders at Nauticus. Decker credited his wife, Bess, with the Mermaids on Parade idea—she was inspired by the Cows on Parade in Chicago after a recent trip. Starting in the summer of 2000, the street corners, parks and storefronts of Norfolk began filling with mermaids. Business and civic leaders jumped at the opportunity to have their own mermaids, and come fall, there were more than 130 on display. “We just sort of let it go and the public embraced it,” says Batcher. The mermaids are all designed and decorated by local artists, and many of them represent a theme related to their location. There are now mermaid trails, books, jewelry, sculptures, art—anything you can think of, the mermaids have inspired. Most proceeds from the sale of mermaids and their offspring benefit local arts organizations. “The mermaids have really touched lives in a variety of ways,” says Batcher. “And they really show the value of public art.” To learn more about Norfolk’s mermaids and to download a mermaid walking tour map, please visit www.mermaidsonparade.com.

Nationally regarded as one of the best art museums in the country, the Chrysler Museum of Art offers a plethora of premier permanent collections, as well as an ambitious program of traveling collections. This enclave includes in excess of 30,000 original works spanning more than 5,000 years of history. These works are featured in 60 distinct and exuberant galleries. The Chrysler Museum of Art is located near downtown Norfolk and overlooks the Hague Inlet of the Elizabeth River. The New York Times described the scenery as “one of the pleasantest places in the United States to while the day away.” The masterpieces on display in the Chrysler are something “any museum in the world would kill for,” as proclaimed by The New York Times. This testament is supported by the fact that the Chrysler Museum of Art features the Jean Outland Chrysler Library, the largest art reference library in the Southeast. Named after automobile heir and art collector Walter P. Chrysler, Jr., the Chrysler Museum of Art was originally founded in 1933 as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. Walter Chrysler presented the city of Norfolk with his collection in 1971, and since then, the museum has continued to grow and expand. The expansive art collection today includes American painting and sculpture, European painting and sculpture,

contemporary art, decorative art, glass, Sculpture on Display and photography. Numerous programs and educational opportunities are offered for adults, families and school field trips. Tours of the galleries and historic houses are also available. And if you build an appetite while visiting, be sure to check out Cuisine & Company. Large groups are welcome. Restaurant hours are Wednesdays through Saturday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and Sundays 12–3 p.m. For additional information about the restaurant, call 757/428-6700. visit to Nauticus provides a full spectrum of exhilarating hands-on exhibits and activities focused on the immense power of the sea. This maritime science museum, located in Norfolk in a massive 120,000 square foot building downtown, is a definite landmark on the waterfront. Curious to know what a shark’s skin feels like? Then head over to the Shark Touch exhibit where warm-water Nurse sharks are available for public attention and contact. Touch more marine life at the Nauticus Touch Tank, featuring starfish, horseshoe crabs and urchins. Interested in weather? Check out Science on a Sphere, a dynamic Nauticus, the Hampton 6-foot globe that shows 3-D animated images of how the oceans and atmosphere interact to produce Roads Naval Museum, our weather and climate. The Battleship Wisconsin Interested in naval battles and underwater and Half Moone Cruise adventure? Stop at the Aegis Theater, where visitors control the outcome of a full-scale battle simulation, and Celebration Center complete with sound and video effects. Another combine to honor fascinating interactive theater, Design Chamber: Battleship X, pits participants against America’s best maritime science, ship designers on the eve of WWII. The challenge: to history and fun. create the greatest battleship ever. Nauticus’ permanent exhibits include 1907: The Jamestown Exposition and the Launching of the Steel Navy, which was developed and produced in conjunction with the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. It examines the period from 1880, when the Navy began to recover from a post-civil war decline, to 1907, when President Theodore Roosevelt sent the Great White Fleet around the world as an affirmation of American naval strength.

Another exhibit, Secrets of the Deep, examines the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s underwater parks, aka National Marine Sanctuaries, as well as the highly publicized USS Monitor site. Step inside a submersible called The Clelia and take on the role of a pilot or a NOAA scientist. You and your family can control an actual 9-foot long robotic arm to collect samples and artifacts from the seabed, or operate a remote-controlled camera to explore the wreck site. In addition, the exhibit showcases real artifacts recovered from the wreck of the famous Civil War ironclad. Inside the Nauticus Theater visitors can enjoy a variety of high-definition films, including the Academy Award®-nominated The Living Sea, which focuses on the power, significance, and sheer beauty of the world’s oceans. Another film, Gateway to the World, tracks the course of a single day at the Port of Virginia, with choreographed motions of trains, cranes and container ships revealing the beauty of transportation, where workers harness the power of the gargantuan machinery towering over them. Music by Cirque du Soleil composers make this a film experience you won’t want to miss. The theater features the Christie CP2000 digital High Definition DLP projector, one of only 10 projectors of its kind in use in the United States and the only one in the tri-state area. Souvenirs are available for purchase at the Banana Pier Gift Shop. Food and refreshments are offered at the Iron Whale Café. Make sure to visit the Hampton Roads Naval Museum on the second floor. The museum examines more than two centuries of interesting naval activity in and around the Hampton Roads harbor. Adjacent to Nauticus and the Naval Museum is the USS Wisconsin, a 887-foot long Iowa-class battleship. The Wisconsin is the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy and once carried a crew of 2,900 sailors. Purchase your tickets for a two-hour tour of the world’s largest Naval Base at the ticket office located at the center’s front entry dock. The two-hour cruises aboard the Victory Rover are offered from March through December. Norfolk’s newest waterfront addition is the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center. This gorgeous, 80,000-square foot facility, adjacent to Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin, is the nation’s newest gateway to Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Canada/New England. Nauticus, located at One Waterside Drive in downtown Norfolk. Nauticus, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, and the Battleship Wisconsin are open Memorial Day through Labor Day daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The rest of the year, hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday noon-5 p.m. Admission to Nauticus is $10.95 for adults, $9.95 for seniors and $8.00 for children (4-12). It’s No Secret- This Garden Is Definitely Worth The Trip

Escape into 155 acres of pure serenity—the Norfolk Botanical Garden, features a variety of ways to enjoy the eye-pleasing horticulture and pristine grounds. Take a stroll through the 12 miles of walking paths, ride the tram to seven different locations within the garden, or relax on a boat tour of Lake Whitehurst—but don’t forget to stop and smell the roses. Dating back to 1938, the Norfolk Botanical Garden has a deep-seeded history that began with a Work Progress Administration (WPA) grant for an Azalea Garden project. A group of more than 200 African-American women and 20 African-American men were assigned to clear 30 acres of dense, native vegetation. The workers then planted 4,000 azaleas, 2,000 rhododendrons, several thousand shrubs and trees and 100 bushels of daffodils. Throughout the years, the garden continued to grow and expand on the workers’ amazing effort, with additions like a Japanese Garden, a Colonial Garden, a Desert Plants Garden, and a Rose Garden, which has sprouted All-American Rose Selection winners. Today, both theme and signature gardens offer breathtaking views in every season. More than 40-years-old, the Japanese Garden offers native Japanese plants like Japanese Holly, Hankow Willow, and Flowering Cherry. The Four Seasons Garden Wildflower Meadow, seeded slightly more than a decade ago, is home to more than 50 species of plants, including poppies, sunflowers and bachelor’s buttons. In this area, guests may observe what insects and birds the plants attract and how they interact with each other. Other theme and signature gardens include Bristow Butterfly Garden, Sarah Lee Baker Perennial Garden, Enchanted Forest, and Purity Garden.

Families love the new World of Wonders (WOW)— A Children’s Adventure Garden. The three-acre garden has several distinct areas, offering interactive lessons that World of Wonders (WOW) are exciting and enriching, not to mention fun for the kids. From learning about the waterways on Earth with exciting fountains and jet sprays, to telling the time by using your own body as a sundial, the WOW gardens can provide hours of entertainment for everyone in the family. Boat tours are a great way to take a break from the excitement. For 40 minutes, enjoy a tour of the Garden as guides point out the wildlife and the wildflowers. Boat tours are available every day from April to Mid-October and weekends from Mid-October to March. The Armed Forces Memorial Connected to the southeastern corner of Town Point Park by two bridges, the memorial features 20 inscriptions from letters written home by U.S. service people who lost their lives in war. Doumar’s Abe Doumar, the original owner of this 1950s drive-in on Monticello Avenue created the ice cream cone at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. His restaurant still exists today, and the Doumar family still makes fresh cones on the original cone machine. Fort Norfolk Fort Norfolk is the last remaining of 19 harborfront forts authorized in 1794 by President George Washington. Stepping through the fort’s arched entryway transports visitors to another era. Mermaids on Parade Mermaids on Parade started in 2000 as a fundraiser for the Public Arts Commission in Norfolk. Moses Myers House Built in 1792, the Moses Myers House is the only historic house in the U.S. interpreting traditions of early Jewish immigrants. Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church is the only pre-Revolutionary War building remaining in downtown Norfolk. Built in 1739, it was severely damaged during the British bombardment on January 1, 1776 and the subsequent burning of the town by both British troops and the colonial militia. A British cannonball fired from one of Lord Dunmore’s ships remains lodged in the south wall. The churchyard was Norfolk’s first burying ground with graves dating back to the 1600s. The church is open for meditation and for self-guided tours weekdays from 9:30 to 4:30 and for worship services Sunday morning and Wednesday noon. Thematic gallery exhibits highlight the experiences of ordinary men and women who lived during the Revolutionary era. Outdoors, visitors can muster with troops in a Continental Army encampment to experience a soldier’s life and, on a re-created 1780s farm, help with chores such as weeding the garden and processing flax. Visitor amenities include free parking, gift shops at both museums, the 190-seat Jamestown Settlement Café, and a snack and beverage vending area with patio seating at the Yorktown Victory Center. In 2008, a combination ticket to both museums is $19.25 for adults and $9.25 for youth ages 6 through 12. Jamestown Settlement is $13.50 for adults, $6.25 for youth, and admission to the Yorktown Victory Center is $9.25 for adults and $5.00 for youth. THE MARINERS’ MUSEUM The Mariners’ Museum, America’s National Maritime Museum, is one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world. Get “hooked” on Norfolk! Don’t forget your fishing gear! You can’t visit Norfolk with its frontage on the Chesapeake Bay without trying out your fishing line. This city’s most popular fishing spot is the Ocean View Fishing Pier with its 1,690-foot pier stretching out into the calm waters of the bay. Or you can head to the end of Willoughby Spit and cast your line from the Willoughby Fishing Pier within view of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. And just what might you catch in Norfolk’s waters? Saltwater delights include croaker, spot, bluefish, flounder, trout and striper. If you prefer some freshwater fare, check out Norfolk’s 673-acre Lake Whitehurst, which is stocked with walleye by Virginia’s Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
