here is no doubt about it—Norfolk is officially on the map as one of America’s most attractive seaports to visit and live. In the heart of the mid-Atlantic, Norfolk has a rich history spanning more than 400 years, beginning when John Smith and his crew first cruised past this area on their way to found Jamestown. With its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk has always been a vital center of commerce and industry, as well as a strategic military location. The area was right in the thick of several Revolutionary and Civil War battles—in 1776, two-thirds of the city was destroyed by the Royal Governor of Virginia, and a cannonball from the siege can still be viewed today lodged in the wall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. During the Civil War, the infamous battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac was fought just off these shores. And today, Norfolk is home to the largest naval base in the world. Evidence of Norfolk’s storied past is around every It is our pleasure corner, but perhaps even to introduce more noticeable is the city’s forward momentum to you and and progress. Downtown your family Norfolk has undergone a the perfect major renaissance in the last ten years, turning empty place to play city streets into bustling and anytime of vibrant corridors. Downtown is now filled with the year. shops, restaurants, offices, arts venues, loft apartments and more, offering a big city atmosphere without the big city hassles. Perhaps this is why Money Magazine called Norfolk, “The South’s #1 big city to live in.” Adjacent to downtown, the Freemason District is one of the city’s most scenic areas. Charming cobblestone streets, buildings and homes dating back to the 1700s, and original ironwork from the 19th century give passersby the feeling they are walking back in time as they enter the quiet neighborhood from downtown. The Pagoda Garden and Tea House overlooking the waterfront is in striking contrast to the old-world atmosphere, but the restaurant and surrounding garden is one of the city’s true
Life. Celebrated Daily.
The Baltimore Sun called it, “The next gleaming gem of the so-called New South.” The Boston Globe said, “Norfolk has become a shipshape seaport.” And The New York Times proclaimed Norfolk, “A cultural center of note.”

treasures and a popular gathering space for residents. Cross Brambleton Avenue from downtown and you will enter Ghent, a dynamic community where students, artists and professionals live, work and play. Named after the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812, the neighborhood is always a hub of activity, and features hundreds of homes, many built at the turn of the century. The main artery of Ghent is Colley Avenue, where outdoor restaurants and coffee shops mix with quaint boutiques and shops. An independent movie theater, art galleries, small theaters and the renowned Chrysler Museum of Art make Ghent the true arts capital of Hampton Roads. Homecoming Memorial Keep heading away from downtown and you’ll hit the shores of the Chesapeake Bay—this is Ocean View, Norfolk’s own beach community. Find a spot on the sandy beaches and you’ll forget you’re only a few miles away from city life. The low-key beach neighborhood hosts many summertime events and is a popular spot for finding excellent seafood restaurants and recreational opportunities. So meet “Norfolk”: an attractive and historic seaport with state-of-the-art entertainment, shopping and restaurants, and a whole range of exciting areas to visit. Where else can you lay on a beach, visit a world-class art museum, step foot on a battleship, shop in boutiques, and eat a gourmet meal, all in one day? Norfolk is truly one of a kind. It is a place where life demands to be celebrated. So join in—celebrate life in Norfolk, everyday. Enjoy your stay!

Dear Friends, On behalf of the staff at the Norfolk Convention and Visitors Bureau, I’d like to welcome you to Norfolk. Our top priority is to ensure that your visit here is a great experience. Please do not hesitate to stop in one of our Visitors Centers for the information you need to do just that. Norfolk is an old and storied port city, and the mermaids you’ll see around town symbolize its connection to the sea. As you encounter one of these lovely statues, take a moment to consider the beauty and creativity she embodies – much like Norfolk itself. Indeed, Norfolk is home to colorful attractions that are feasts for the eyes. The Norfolk Botanical Garden, for example, has acres upon acres of exquisite gardens to explore. Along the sparkling Elizabeth River, you will find the gorgeous Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, as well as Town Point Park, the Waterside Festival Marketplace, Nauticus, USS Wisconsin and several ships that can take you on a tour of our harbor. Additionally, the inspirational pieces within the Chrysler Museum of Art, the artists at work in d’Art Center and the numerous musicians, dancers and actors who showcase their craft in Norfolk’s theaters will delight you. Other attractions that are must-sees while you are here include the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, MacArthur Memorial, Virginia Zoological Park and, of course, Naval Station Norfolk. And don’t forget our many chef-owned restaurants where you will find the best in local cuisine! We are thrilled to have you in Norfolk and hope you return again soon.

VALUE OF PUBLIC ART
Mermaid Parade Y
ou’ll see them posing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries—they are Norfolk’s cultural icon, the mermaid. Today, the mermaid is synonymous with civic pride, as it exemplifies Monticello Arcade Norfolk’s dedication to nurture the local arts community and to maintain a rapid pace of cultural and economic growth. Mermaid statues began dotting downtown in 2000, shortly after the city branded the image of a young, free-spirited mermaid as its official city symbol as part of the “Life Celebrated Daily” campaign. The city had been undergoing major revitalization efforts and the mermaid was a method of driving home the fact that a new Norfolk was being born. “We had some issues with the perception of Norfolk, both by those outside and inside,” says Bob Batcher, the city’s manager of public relations. “We needed a new brand.” In November 1999, attorney and well-known Norfolk advocate Peter Decker, Jr. introduced the idea of mermaid statues at a meeting with hundreds of business and civic leaders at Nauticus. Decker credited his wife, Bess, with the Mermaids on Parade idea—she was inspired by the Cows on Parade in Chicago after a recent trip. Starting in the summer of 2000, the street corners, parks and storefronts of Norfolk began filling with mermaids. Business and civic leaders jumped at the opportunity to have their own mermaids, and come fall, there were more than 130 on display. “We just sort of let it go and the public embraced it,” says Batcher. The mermaids are all designed and decorated by local artists, and many of them represent a theme related to their location. There are now mermaid trails, books, jewelry, sculptures, art—anything you can think of, the mermaids have inspired. Most proceeds from the sale of mermaids and their offspring benefit local arts organizations. “The mermaids have really touched lives in a variety of ways,” says Batcher. “And they really show the value of public art.” To learn more about Norfolk’s mermaids and to download a mermaid walking tour map, please visit www.mermaidsonparade.com.

Nationally regarded as one of the best art museums in the country, the Chrysler Museum of Art offers a plethora of premier permanent collections, as well as an ambitious program of traveling collections. This enclave includes in excess of 30,000 original works spanning more than 5,000 years of history. These works are featured in 60 distinct and exuberant galleries. The New York Times described the scenery as “one of the pleasantest places in the United States to while the day away.” The masterpieces on display in the Chrysler are something “any museum in the world would kill for,” as proclaimed by The New York Times. Norfolk Botanical Garden
It’s No Secret- This Garden Is Definitely Worth The Trip
Escape into 155 acres of pure serenity—the Norfolk Botanical Garden, features a variety of ways to enjoy the eye-pleasing horticulture and pristine grounds. Take a stroll through the 12 miles of walking paths, ride the tram to seven different locations within the garden, or relax on a boat tour of Lake Whitehurst—but don’t forget to stop and smell the roses. Dating back to 1938, the Norfolk Botanical Garden has a deep-seeded history that began with a Work Progress Administration (WPA) grant for an Azalea Garden project. A group of more than 200 African-American women and 20 African-American men were assigned to clear 30 acres of dense, native vegetation. The workers then planted 4,000 azaleas, 2,000 rhododendrons, several thousand shrubs and trees and 100 bushels of daffodils. Throughout the years, the garden continued to grow and expand on the workers’ amazing effort, with additions like a Japanese Garden, a Colonial Garden, a Desert Plants Garden, and a Rose Garden, which has sprouted All-American Rose Selection winners. Today, both theme and signature gardens offer breathtaking views in every season. More than 40-years-old, the Japanese Garden offers native Japanese plants like Japanese Holly, Hankow Willow, and Flowering Cherry. The Four Seasons Garden Wildflower Meadow, seeded slightly more than a decade ago, is home to more than 50 species of plants, including poppies, sunflowers and bachelor’s buttons. In this area, guests may observe what insects and birds the plants attract and how they interact with each other. Other theme and signature gardens include Bristow Butterfly Garden, Sarah Lee Baker Perennial Garden, Enchanted Forest, and Purity Garden.
Families love the new World of Wonders (WOW)— A Children’s Adventure Garden. The three-acre garden has several distinct areas, offering interactive lessons that World of Wonders (WOW) are exciting and enriching, not to mention fun for the kids. From learning about the waterways on Earth with exciting fountains and jet sprays, to telling the time by using your own body as a sundial, the WOW gardens can provide hours of entertainment for everyone in the family. COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG America’s oldest and largest live interpretive history experience, Colonial Williamsburg’s 301-acre Historic Area brings Virginia’s 18th-century capital city to life every day. Visit with patriots and loyalists, tradespeople and merchants, hardy farmers and enslaved Africans. Debate the “issues of the day” with a founding father, take a carriage ride, stroll the streets, visit the shops and taverns where Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Washington, and others conceived the ideals of liberty, independence, and personal freedom that influenced the founding of this nation. Spend an afternoon in the Revolutionary City and live through critical moments that signify Williamsburg’s role and relevance to the American Revolution. Beginning in Spring, the streets of the east end of the Historic Area will come alive as the town’s inhabitants move through the day; wagons arriving and being unloaded, food and wares being sold, and heated conversations over horse races and cockfights won and lost. Discover the events that led to the collapse of the royal government one day, then explore the theme of revolutionary citizens at war. Join in the colonists’ rage at Dunmore’s Proclamation. Listen as the newly written Declaration of Independence is read to the citizens of Williamsburg. Experience life in a town occupied by British forces. March from the Capitol to the Courthouse as General Washington and his troops begin their journey toward Yorktown and victory. Watch the kids drill with the militia, roll hoops, or discover how it felt to be locked in the stocks. You’ll enjoy shopping and dining in surroundings familiar to the town’s colonial residents. Evening entertainments range from 18th-century music, dance, and theater to critically acclaimed movies. And, save some time to explore our traditional indoor museums. Please check the weekly program guide to learn about activities, exhibitions, and programming during your visit. Centered in the historic triangle, Williamsburg provides a perfect base for exploration. Guests of the official, on-site Colonial Williamsburg Hotels are mere A8 • 2008

JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT, YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER
Living-History Museums Tell Story Of Nation’s Beginnings WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – At Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center, the story of the nation’s beginnings – from the arrival of English colonists in 1607 to the American Revolution and the adoption of the Constitution and Bill of Rights almost two centuries later – unfolds at the two museums through gallery exhibits and historical interpretation in outdoor re-created settings. Daily tours and visitor-participatory demonstrations led by costumed interpreters allow visitors to glimpse everyday lifestyles of people in 17th- and 18th-century Virginia. Jamestown Settlement’s gallery exhibits and introductory film, “1607: A Nation Takes Root, chronicle the nation’s 17th-century beginnings in Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, and complement the historical interpretive program at outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three English ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists to Virginia in 1607 and a colonial fort, and a riverfront discovery area. Visitors can board a replica of one of the three ships and explore buildings in the fort and Powhatan village. The riverfront discovery area highlights the role of the James River and other waterways in 17th-century travel, commerce and cultural exchange, reflecting Powhatan Indian, European and African traditions. The Yorktown Victory Center chronicles America’s struggle for independence, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation.

THE MARINERS’ MUSEUM The Mariners’ Museum, America’s National Maritime Museum, is one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world. For over 75 years, The Mariners’ has illustrated the spirit of seafaring adventure, assembling a renowned and strikingly diverse collection of maritime artifacts, including figureheads, ship models, decorative arts, and small craft from around the world. The remains of one of the most famous ships in history, the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor, now have a permanent home in The Mariners’ Museum’s USS Monitor Center. The Wall Street Journal calls the new $30 million, 63,500-square-foot facility “An Ironclad Must-See.” Be a part of the action in our high-definition battle theater, walk on the full-scale Monitor replica, see artifacts like the iconic revolving gun turret, experience interactive exhibits and hands-on conservation, and feel the jubilation as the famous ironclad was rescued from the bottom of the ocean. In addition, the Museum sits on a 550-acre park, the nation’s largest privately maintained park. Rolling woodlands, a 167-acre Lake Maury, and five-mile Noland Trail make this a true urban oasis. The Mariners’ Museum is an official site on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, and visitors can take advantage of our interactive backpack program to learn about topics ranging from the history of the park, its plants, and animals to environmental concerns. The Mariners’ Museum is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $12.50 for adults, $11.50 for AAA, military, and senior citizens, $7.25 for children 6-17, and free for children under 5. Take I-64 to exit 258-A. For more information, call (757) 596-2222 or toll free (800) 581-SAIL or visit www.MarinersMuseum.org.

Come, visit Smithfield, Windsor and Isle of Wight County where residents take pride in their heritage – a history that began with the founding of our nation and continues to shape the region today. Visit and you’ll find a burgeoning arts scene, unique and historic attractions, and eclectic shops. Come relax by the rivers, stroll along friendly streets, enjoy one of the many concerts, plays or special events and talk with new friends over a bottle of wine at one of Smithfield’s tantalizing eateries. Love the outdoors? Boat, sail, canoe, kayak, play tennis or golf or bicycle along scenic trails. There is so much to do. Smithfield and Isle of Wight’s history reach deep into America’s past; Isle of Wight was one of the eight original shires in Virginia and Smithfield is nestled along the banks of the Pagan and James Rivers, a spot that was discovered by Captain John Smith and other early settlers. The area’s heritage is also reflected in the many beautiful homes in Smithfield’s Historic District – there are nearly 60 beautiful and historic Colonial, Federal and Victorian structures, some private residences and businesses, but some transformed into museums, inns, restaurants, and unique antique and specialty shops. Also, nearby, is St. Luke’s Shrine. Built circa 1632, it is the oldest existing church of English foundation in America and this country’s only surviving brick Gothic church. Close too is Fort Boykin, now a county park, built in

In one magical month, in dozens of venues, you’ll find spectacular performances by world-class performers. —The Festival begins with an awe-inspiring display of music and might, the Virginia International Tattoo, gathering military bands, drill teams, even bicycle troops—more than 850 precision performers from eight countries—in Norfolk’s Scope Arena April 18–20. —Set your trip soaring with the legendary and the electrifying Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, with works including Virginia International Tattoo Parade the company’s gospel-flavored signature piece, Revelations, at Norfolk’s Chrysler Hall, May 2–4, or one of the most exquisite voices in all of opera, soprano Kathleen Battle, at Harrison Opera House on May 1. —Enjoy America’s newest full-time vocal ensemble as they sing with one of the freshest and most engaging sounds in choral music today, Cantus at Christ and St. Luke’s Church in Norfolk, on May 19. —Raise a glass…a stein…a mug to the great art of beer at the 7th Annual Virginia Beer Festival on May 17 at Town Point Park. For connoisseurs, this popular festival favorite brings fine beers from nearly three dozen domestic and international breweries. And for friends seeking a sunlit Saturday full of fun, this beer- and music-filled celebration is the perfect spring celebration. —Musical icon, Kurt Weill created the adaptation Lost in the Stars of Alan Paton’s novel of South Africa, Cry, the Beloved Country, winning instant acclaim: “Here the theatre has come bearing its most memorable gifts: eloquent, deep, dramatic, and beautiful,” said The New York Times. Co-presented with the Virginia Arts Festival, the Virginia Stage Company, Opera Theatre Pittsburgh and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, a new landmark staging of this musical theater classic is created on April 25–27, in premiere performances sure to attract opera lovers and theater buffs alike. The Virginia Arts Festival is brimming with unforgettable experiences to share, so join in April 18–May 26. Imagine, Inspire, Become! With the Great Depression for a backdrop, a brother and sister struggle over a precious family heirloom, a piano with images of their African ancestors carved by their enslaved grandfather. 757/627-1234 or www.vastage.com

His contributions to popular music in the twentieth century cannot be measured. Follow Williams’ from his humble roots singing gospel music on the Louisiana Hayride, to the storied Grand Ole Opry, and to his eventual self-destruction at age twentynine. ome folks are surprised by the eclectic collection of eateries in Norfolk—you’ll find everything from traditional Southern cuisine to international offerings, including Cuban, Irish, Indian, Italian, Thai, Brazilian and more. You’ll also find some of our region’s finest ingredients, such as local seafood from the Chesapeake Bay and produce from farms along the Eastern Shore. Norfolk’s gift to visitors and residents alike is a delicious package of culinary presents lining up along Granby Street and surrounding side streets. Chef-owned eateries offering a diverse array of cuisines fill the popular city street, offering visitors and locals one of the best culinary experiences around. From popular lunch spots to upscale gourmet establishments, Norfolk covers the full spectrum of dining choices—you may run out of time or space in your stomach, but you definitely won’t run out of options. Away from downtown, even more dining opportunities await empty stomachs. Dine alfresco on Colley Avenue in Ghent, where the sidewalks are lined with restaurants, hip bars and cafes. Down the road in Ocean View, you’ll find some of the locals’ favorite spots for succulent seafood fresh from the Bay. As for nightlife, the same restaurants offering wonderful cuisine transform into popular hangouts at night, with special late night menus and specialty cocktails. Granby Street becomes a buzz of activity after dark, with late-diners and socialites enjoying the cosmopolitan atmosphere of downtown. Of course, Norfolk is always an exciting place to be— day, evening and night. And no matter what time of day, you can always find something good to eat.

&Recreation
Explore our historic port city by boat! As a 400-year-old port city, Norfolk is a haven not only for commerical and naval vessels, but also for pleasure boaters. And it’s no wonder. The city rests at the mouth of the scenic Chesapeake Bay and is mile marker zero on the Intracoastal Waterway. With a wide array of full-service marinas, some of which even offer high-speed Internet access, boaters get first-rate docking here and access to a host of close-tothe water activities. Some offer boat rental service and charter boats as well. From the athletic club offered at Waterside Marina to the swimming pool at Taylor’s Landing. Norfolk loves making pleasure boaters feel right at home. Special Waterside Marina packages also are available for select events throughout the year. Contact Norfolk Festevents at 757/441-2345 or go to www.festeventsva.org. Fishing
Get “hooked” on Norfolk! Don’t forget your fishing gear! You can’t visit Norfolk with its frontage on the Chesapeake Bay without trying out your fishing line. This city’s most popular fishing spot is the Ocean View Fishing Pier with its 1,690-foot pier stretching out into the calm waters of the bay. Or you can head to the end of Willoughby Spit and cast your line from the Willoughby Fishing Pier within view of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. And just what might you catch in Norfolk’s waters? Saltwater delights include croaker, spot, bluefish, flounder, trout and striper. If you prefer some freshwater fare, check out Norfolk’s 673-acre Lake Whitehurst, which is stocked with walleye by Virginia’s Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. You might also catch some largemouth bass, blue gill and white perch.
