American Red Cross Class Descriptions Parent and Child (6 mos to 3yrs.)

Parents and children learn together to increase children’s comfort in the water and build a foundation of basic aquatic and water safety skills. Introduction to basic skills appropriate for this age group are safety topics for parents and children, enter and exit the pool, blowing bubbles, getting wet with toys, arm and leg action, front and back float, and underwater exploration. All skills taught are with physical support from the parent. The philosophy of this class is to help your child feel comfortable in the water. As the parent, you will be teaching your child to relax and have fun in the water, as well as learn safety skills. Please note: This class will not teach your child how to swim. This class is the first step to getting your child started in the water. As your child progresses to the next levels, he or she will begin to swim comfortably on their own.

Beginning Toddler (3 to 5yrs.)

Introduction to Water Skills Orients children to the aquatic environment, and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. New Skills: Enter and exit water safely, blowing bubbles, open eyes underwater, float on front and back, roll from front to back and back to front, leg actions, arm actions, and combining leg and arm actions together.

Advanced Toddler (3 to 5yrs.)

Fundamental Aquatic Skills Helps children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around the water. New Skills: Jumping into water, bobbing, submerge entire head, open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects, front and back glide, combined arm and leg action on front and back, and safety skills.

Level 4

Stroke Improvement

GETTING YOUR CHILD INTO THE RIGHT CLASS Parent and child classes introduce children 3 years of age or younger to the water. Toddler classes are for children 3 to 5 years of age who are comfortable in the water, and do not need a parent present. Children who are 6 years of age or older and just learning to swim should enroll in Level 1.

Level 1 (6 yrs. and up)

Introduction to Water Skills Helps participants feel comfortable in the water. New Skills: Safely entering and exiting the water, blow bubbles, bobbing, open eyes underwater and retrieve submerged objects, leg actions, arm actions, and combine arm and leg actions together.

Level 3

Stroke Development
