2014 season
Welcome to 2014 The year's Season will take you from virtual worlds to battlefields, along remote highways to roadside diners, up a huge treehouse, across to the Tiwi Islands, to flooded landscapes and beyond. The theatre makers continue to employ a full spectrum of performance styles, new technology and design to transport us to their worlds, and to tell the stories of our time. My Radio Heart, is one of our own and one of NORPA’s most ambitious projects to date. Developed over two years, NORPA has partnered with local artists with disabilities, and local musicians, Tralala Blip, to create an immersive, virtual world where love is in hot pursuit. True to NORPA form, we have produced a show that is courageous, adventurous and full of heart. See it here before it tours to Sydney! Bell Shakespeare returns with Henry V and we also welcome shake n stir with a visceral take on Orwell’s 1984. Break bread with us at Food when celebrated choreographer Kate Champion teams up with Belvoir. Get swept up in the rhythms of TaikOz or immersed in the beauty of Lake where the stage will be literally flooded with water. Our 2014 Season also includes a wild and hilarious adaptation of Andy Griffiths’ book, The 13-Storey Treehouse. Last year, I directed the show at the Sydney Opera House and we're thrilled to include it in our
Season. Author Andy Griffiths himself will be here and free to chat with you after the show. For the young at heart there’s Wulamanayuwi and the Seven Pamanui, an aboriginal adventure story, and the thrilling Circus Oz, whose immense production will look fantastic in the 'new' Lismore City Hall. 2014 is our first full Season at the newly renovated Lismore City Hall. Thanks to our partners Lismore City Council, Regional Development Australia and Arts NSW, we now have a performance space that allows us to come together as a creative community. In addition to the newly improved theatre, you can now expect a pop-up diner, new bar, and live music before each evening performance. To keep the after-show flame alight, we have fascinating post-show talks with the artists. Please take the time to read through what’s on offer this year. The companies that feature on the following pages invite you to be a part of the worlds they create. Come and join us.

Big Brother is back. Oceania; a Nation perpetually at war, where surveillance cameras watch every move and Thought Police roam the streets. By day, Winston Smith is an editor at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history for the ruling party and its illusive leader, Big Brother. By night, he pursues a forbidden love affair with the mysterious Julia. When Winston and Julia are discovered, they are violently separated, detained and prepared for conversion. Locked in the Ministry of Love
and interrogated by the quietly terrifying O’Brien, Winston is tortured in an attempt to make him reject free thought and logic, and surrender his dream of liberation. Brace yourself for this terrifically gripping theatrical event set against a towering wall of plasma screens. From the team that brought you Animal Farm, this new stage adaptation brings George Orwell’s final novel screaming into the present.

Knives, like ‘em sharp. On a stretch of Australian highway, two sisters run a family takeaway joint. Chiko Rolls and reminiscing are on the menu. While they quietly wage war with their past and dream up a brighter future, a young life-loving Turkish traveller arrives with a charm and sensuality that turns their world around. The sisters soon transform their rundown fastfood stop into a restaurant showcasing Elma’s
gift for comfort cooking. Audience members become restaurant guests as the sisters serve up Elma’s hearty minestrone soup, sourdough and local wines. Kate Champion’s Force Majeure produces some of Australia’s most ground-breaking dance theatre and Belvoir is one of Australia’s greatest and most prominent theatre companies. Food, their joint production, is a feast for the senses with an erotic mix of words and movement that will spice and stir in equal parts.

NORPA presents a Bell Shakespeare production
Henry V bell shakespeare Director damien ryan It’s lonely at the top. When King Henry V is manipulated by church advisors, taunted by French royalty and betrayed by English nobles, he has all the ammunition he needs to lash out and invade France. Or does he? Having vanquished enemy forces in Harfleur, Henry’s army is ‘weak and sickly’ as it staggers towards a showdown at Agincourt. The night before battle, the king endures a long dark night of the soul, where he
hears first-hand about the fears and frailties of his outnumbered soldiers. But Henry holds one last weapon: the power of words. And it may just save his men, his country and himself. Damien Ryan’s courageous production of Henry V is an unflinching examination of the questions that Shakespeare raises; about political spin, patriotism, religion, class, monarchy, brotherhood and how leaders respond during times of crisis.
"One of our best Shakespeare directors." Daily Telegraph
“Bell Shakespeare is known for placing Shakespeare at the centre of current affairs and popular culture. Shakespeare has never sounded so relevant — they've made it an art.” Julian Louis, Artistic Director

NORPA presents a TaikOz concert
crimson sky by taikoz
Featuring Satsuki Odamura (Bass Koto)
Based on a haiku by Japanese poet Miura Yuzuru, Artistic Director Ian Cleworth evokes the poem’s sensual, dramatic and often playful imagery of a cloud of dragonflies ascending into a deep red sky.
aka-tombo red dragonflies sarasara nagaru flowing like a ripple akane-zora toward the crimson sky Australia’s world-acclaimed taiko drumming ensemble, TaikOz, presents a stunning new work, Crimson Sky. Introspection, meditative melodies and sheer explosive might sit alongside light-hearted exuberance.
The thunderous drumming of the taiko is interwoven with the hypnotic melodies of bamboo flutes, voice and a rare performance of the bass koto, a traditional Japanese 17-stringed plucked instrument.
"Thunderous, visceral, ritualistic, dynamic, vibrant, reverent and downright sexy." Arts Hub
"The scale and power of TaikOz clearly resonates with audiences in our region – I remember the standing ovation when they performed 6 years ago. If you haven’t seen them, it’s a spectacle not to miss. If you have, then you know you need to see their new show.” Julian Louis, Artistic Director

norpa Who we are Formed in 1993, NORPA (Northern Rivers Performing Arts) is a theatre company based in Lismore in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. The Northern Rivers is our physical and spiritual home – we draw inspiration from its landscape, history, people and culture. We are driven to tell our stories in accessible and dynamic ways. Our works challenge perceptions of the performing arts. They use dance, circus, visual art, live music, surprising locations, audience interaction, and all manner of human and technological skill to tell the story. Our projects are ambitious and take us, and our audiences, to new places. Our original works connect us to our community – they are created with the imagination and spirit of our community in mind. And they are well received. Our home-grown shows are performed before large, sell-out crowds. We also program works from leading and emerging national companies that reflect the diversity of our community – we balance risky productions with sure-fire entertainment. We love to spark robust conversation in the foyer and we love to surprise our audiences. NORPA is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status led by a management committee of local professionals, run by a small team of theatre and venue professionals, and supported by a large group of volunteers. NORPA also manages the Lismore City Hall, on behalf of Lismore City Council, as a venue for hire as well as a space for many different community gatherings.

NORPA is part of the conversation defining contemporary Australian performing arts and storytelling.” Julian Louis, Artistic Director
My Radio Heart — 2014
Beautiful Bones — 2012
Premiering in NORPA’s 2014 Season this year before travelling to Sydney, My Radio Heart is a stunning new work featuring a local ensemble of six abled and differently-abled performers and the music of local electronic outfit Tralala Blip.
Choreographer Brian Lucas, one of Australia’s most exciting theatrical visionaries, collaborated with three leading regional dancers and visual artist, Kellie O’Dempsey, to create Beautiful Bones.
Open House — 2011 The Home Project — 2011-2013
Open House was staged as a mock inspection of an ‘open house’ at a mystery location in Lismore. The inspection was hosted by The Pitts, a family of vaudeville-inspired acrobats.
A 3-year project in collaboration with Southern Cross University, The Home Project explored the nature of homelessness in the Northern Rivers. The project began in 2011 with an interactive art exhibition and culminated in a multimedia event centred around the iconic Winsome Hotel, its residents and the Lismore Soup Kitchen.
Engine — 2010
Railway Wonderland — 2012 Staged at Lismore’s train station, Railway Wonderland reconnected the community with their disused train line and, by extension, forgotten stories of the past.
All too familiar in a regional area, Engine explored the tragedy of young lives lost on our roads and the aftermath for a family dealing with their grief. Each performance in the tour featured a chorus of students, from local high schools, who devised and performed key scenes with the actors.
Over the next two years Generator is developing Bundjalung Nghari: The Gathering, a dance theatre work engaging with Bundjalung stories, community and culture. For more information about our Generator program visit www.norpa.org.au. If you are interested in partnering and supporting Generator please contact NORPA’s General Manager Emily Berry – manager@norpa.org.au

norpa community Education
Do you remember the first time you experienced the magic of a live theatre show? Ask any playwright, actor or theatre practitioner and it’s often their early exposure to theatre that had a profound effect on them. In 2014 NORPA have put together an exciting program of shows that will inspire, educate and engage with kids of varying ages. We connect with pre-schools, primary, high schools and home schoolers across the region. We offer student and teacher group prices, help facilitate school excursions to the theatre, provide teacher resources specific to each show, and organise additional activities such as workshops and opportunities to meet the cast. If you would like more information about our education program please contact Sam Hall, our Education Coordinator — coordinator@norpa.org.au — or visit the Education section at www.norpa.org.au
Workshops
There’s nothing quite as rewarding as learning first hand from experts in the field. Throughout the year NORPA run workshops across a number of areas and disciplines, often in conjunction with the companies that are touring. If you’d like to be kept informed please contact Bethwynn Hackett our Creative Producer — creativeproducer@norpa.org.au — and ask to be added to our workshop database.
Venues for hire

Volunteers
When you come to NORPA the people who greet you at the door, or show you to your seat, are all volunteers, doing it for the love of the arts. There are too many to list individually, however, we thank each and every one of them for their help and support. NORPA could not survive without them! If you are interested in volunteering for NORPA please contact Sharon Rigby, Front of House Manager on 1300 066 772 — foh@norpa.org.au
