A true master of the craft, he gets remarkably better each year, a phenomenon that ensures other comics sneak in the back of his always sold out shows. 2016 was a breakout year for Tom Gleeson. The three time Helpmann Award nominee starred alongside Charlie Pickering with his ‘Hard Chat’ segment on The Weekly. He toured the country with his stand up show – aptly entitled Tom Gleeson and just casually went about being one of the most in demand comedians on the Australian comedy scene. Tom’s trademark dry and wicked style, both unique and hilarious, puts him in a class all of his own.

growing our future The Northern Rivers region is foodie heaven and renowned for innovative and sustainable growing processes, as well as our superb artisanal products.
Over this full day event, meet those with the most intimate relationship with our fertile land, learn where their passion for best practice began and sample the delicious and exotic fruits of their labours. Expect guest chefs, food writers and a great deal of yum!
Winter
all animals are equal Human rights versus animal rights and the spaces in between. In the words of Albert Einstein “If a man aspires towards a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from injury to animals.” And Gandhi claimed “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." If we cannot provide for the safety and welfare of our animals, farmed and wild, is it surprising that the most vulnerable and disadvantaged of our community are treated without compassion, without empathy? Join human and animal rights activists for an intensely moving exchange of ideas.
Autumn
a question of gender Anecdotal reports suggest the gender gap is closing. Reality suggests otherwise. There can be few topics as hotly debated as gender equality, and in this forum, the nation’s most outspoken advocates examine our successes and shortcomings in promoting equality. Whether it be violence against women, disempowerment in the workforce, discrimination against those who identify as LGBT, gender stereotypes and sexism abound. This will be a feisty and revealing conversation on one of the most compelling issues of our day.
Spring
for the love of us all A celebration of the creative and vibrant hub that is the arts community of the Northern Rivers. Is there something in the water? It’s claimed that this region has more creative practitioners per capita than any other in Australia. We’ll meet the region’s writers, thinkers, artists and performers in an event that springs from local soil, to reach global audiences. From emerging to established, from relative unknowns to household names, let’s applaud the cultural diversity that enriches us all.

with an undeniable voice
and an arsenal of powerful songs, Martha Wainwright is a beguiling performer and a refreshingly different force in music. Her songs provide a window into her life without artifice or pretension. The daughter of folk legends Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, Martha’s immersion in music from an early age is evident in her command of the stage and her masterful handling of a spectrum of musical styles. The performance will showcase her fifth record, Goodnight City, which may just be her best yet. The album features her own work, alongside songs written by her brother Rufus Wainwright and friends such as Beth Orton, Glen Hansard, Michael Ondaatje and Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs. Martha Wainwright’s astonishingly versatile voice soars, sighs, provokes and tells secrets.
Martha Wainwright excels at both singing and songwriting, and earns herself a spot among this decade’s foremost performers. POPMATTERS.COM

spellbinding performance. A multi-award winning sell-out hit at festivals around the world. Ask anyone who grew up through the ‘70s and they will be able to tell you exactly where they were when they first heard Tubular Bells. Composed by Mike Oldfield in 1973, the album went on to sell over 30 million copies, kickstarting the Virgin empire.

The duo is literally rushed off their feet as they rush around a sea of instruments. It is an intricately choreographed, thrilling piece of tightrope theatre. It is one of the most innovative musical performances to grace the stage in many years.

The show made its European debut at last year’s Edinburgh Festival and the Scottish press went bananas, lavishing the show with four and five-star reviews.
Now, more than 40 years on, two young Australian multiinstrumentalists, Aidan Roberts and Daniel Holdsworth, are presenting this modern masterpiece in a spectacular live event. So what's the catch? Oldfield harnessed – what was at the time – the latest in multi-track recording technology, playing a multitude of instruments one-by-one in the studio. However, in Tubular Bells for Two there are only two men on stage needing to perform every part live with only four hands and four feet between them.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences are warned that this production contains images of deceased persons.
coranderrk is about what might have been.
At a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry in 1881, the men and women of the Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board. Their goal was both simple and revolutionary: to be allowed to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered for themselves on the scrap of country left to them. CORANDERRK recreates the Inquiry. This is both great theatre and great history. It revives the voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better pact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants. This special production pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite the odds, appropriating the power of the written word to make their own voices ring loud and clear. CORANDERRK is a collaboration between leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, researchers, education experts and community members. The production aims to encourage a shared understanding of the past between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

australian dance theatre
has thrilled sell-out audiences around the world with performances of cutting edge dance. Now the internationally acclaimed company brings Be Your Self Redux to NORPA for the first time. In Garry Stewart’s Be Your Self Redux, audiences are engaged in a complex dialogue in which they are compelled to explore what makes you ‘you’. The athletic dancers of ADT are transformed into erupting, powerful, and emotional entities, projecting startling physical images.
Arising from conversations with a Buddhist monk, neurologist, physiologist and literary academic, Stewart situates the body at the centre of his inquiry and reveals that despite our civilising cultural influences, the body is still a force to be reckoned with. A distilled version of the original Be Your Self, Be Your Self Redux fuses Stewart’s audacious choreography with spoken word to create an exciting dance work that leaves audiences questioning the underpinnings of who they are.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra presents a soulful concert of Mozart & Brahms. Britain’s leading clarinetist, Matthew Hunt, joins 'probably the most engaging maverick in classical music today' (The Times), Pekka Kuusisto, and ACO Collective, as the soloist for Brahms’ soulful Clarinet Quintet.
24
Brahms came out of retirement to write the Clarinet Quintet and created a work that is clearly written from the heart. Bartók too was writing from the soul when he composed his Divertimento. Experience a moving afternoon of classical music featuring music by Mozart, Bartók and Brahms.

around. Portia has it. Bassanio wants it. Shylock lends it. Antonio owes the value of it. Love also plays a part. Portia offers it. Bassanio wants it. And Antonio may lose a pound of flesh for it. This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic hijinks, The Merchant Of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice. Featuring three time Helpmann Award winner, Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the defiant Shylock, and Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia, the production will be directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (Belvoir’s Jasper Jones and Medea). This masterfully envisioned production tackles the prejudices and preconceived notions of one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays.

From the creators of celebrated Australian works Rumour Has It and Wrecking Ball comes the mustsee live music event of the year: Lady Beatle - a modern memory play set to a kaleidoscopic soundtrack of The Beatles’ most monumental hits. Starring Australian stage and screen star Naomi Price (The Tragedy of King Richard III, Ladies in Black, The Voice Australia) and inspired by true accounts, Lady Beatle weaves a fantastical tale about the woman who inspired The Beatles’ biggest chart toppers, including Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Eleanor Rigby, Lady Madonna, Penny Lane and Yesterday. Rediscover The Beatles’ immortal catalogue as new; reimagined and reinterpreted through sparkling original arrangements performed live by this world-class vocalist and a virtuosic band of Australia’s top musicians. Lady Beatle reunites award-winning collaborators Naomi Price and Adam Brunes in their highly anticipated third pop-culture cabaret, promising a heady trip of psychedelic fun, magical entertainment, and wide-eyed wonderment.

war is waging at the centre of
the world, where the magic of ancient cultures are pitted against the subterfuge of the west. Meanwhile, on Bundjalung country there is sorry business taking place; a mother wails as a father is languishing. Mamoonh, a Bundjalung revolutionary fatigued by war, hears the lament of his mother Gammi as she conjures the wind. As the wind gathers into a force, Mamoonh returns to Bundjalung country to attend to his dying father
with his wife and two sons, only to find there is war afire on his very own country. Mamoonh realises he must urgently invoke the magic of ancient Bundjalung customs to guide his sons through lore in order to heal the trauma of the past, make sense of the present, and to envision a future. Told through a series of vignettes, strong physicality and First Nation voices with themes of magic realism, we see Mamoonh transition into a lore man, guiding his sons from boys to men, follower to leaders. Djurra - the magic is here, the magic is now.

Who we are NORPA (Northern Rivers Performing Arts) is shaping contemporary theatre from regional Australia. The Northern Rivers region is our physical and spiritual home – we draw inspiration from its landscape, history, people and culture. We are driven to tell our stories in accessible and dynamic ways. Our original works challenge perceptions of the performing arts. Our projects are ambitious and take us, and our audiences, to new places. We curate an annual Season of works from leading and emerging national companies
that reflect the diversity of our community – we balance risky productions with surefire entertainment. We love to spark robust conversation in the foyer and we love to surprise our audiences. We manage the Lismore City Hall in an innovative alliance with Lismore City Council as a regional cultural hub. We are a not-for-profit organisation led by a management committee of local professionals, run by a small team of theatre and venue professionals, and supported by a large group of volunteers.

Generator is NORPA’s creative development program — it’s the essence and the heart of what we do and why we exist. We love making original works that push theatre as an art form and excite our audiences. Our projects are created through a collaborative and dynamic approach to storytelling. We use different combinations of dance, script, circus, design, live music, surprising locations and all manner of human and technological skill within our shows. NORPA’s Generator productions allow us to showcase our collaborative approach to theatre-making — a process that is imaginative, adventurous and connects theatre to audiences throughout the Northern Rivers and beyond. Works generated include — THE HOME PROJECT (2011-2013) OPEN HOUSE (2011) BEAUTIFUL BONES (2012) RAILWAY WONDERLAND (2012 & 2015) MY RADIO HEART (2014 & 2016)

Generator WORKS IN DEVELOPMENT
HORSE’S MOUTH (WORKING TITLE)
NORPA, in partnership with Beyond Empathy, will develop and devise a new theatrical dance work, co-created with emerging Aboriginal dance artists and led by NORPA’s Associate Director Kirk Page. This new work expresses the dilemma young people face living in rural and regional communities. It will explore stories of isolation, access, inclusion and belonging. Ultimately giving voice to a generation of young adults in the here and now and the impact we can have in shaping the future of our collective culture. Standing on the shoulders of those who have come before us, the project will reflect the experiences of this generation and ask - how far have we really come? Beyond Empathy uses the arts to influence change and enrich the lives of individuals and communities experiencing recurring hardship. They work in urban and suburban, regional and remote communities across Australia where multiple disadvantage is found: social, economic, individual and community.

JOURNEY TO AN UNNAMED WORLD
Journey to an Unnamed World is an immersive new theatre work for children directed by Julian Louis and Valley Lipcer in a new collaboration. The work was written by Suzie Miller and designed by Ed Horne. The audience travels through a fantastic maze-like set and interacts with each space on a quest to help Zara find her lost Self. They are led on a magical journey of discovery and in the process explore issues such as self-confidence, identity, empathy and their connection to the natural world. The concept was developed last year in partnership with Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Lismore with more than 500 local children experiencing the first staging of Journey to an Unnamed World, including an integrated program of classroom activities prior to the performance experience. “Journey to an Unnamed World brings the talents of great teaching and great performing arts together,” said Paul Thornton, Assistant Director Education Services, Catholic Schools Office, Diocese of Lismore. “We want to inspire children through an interaction that leaves a lasting impression and helps to build their love of literature into secondary education.”

NORPA
Foundation This year NORPA is launching the NORPA Foundation. At its core, the NORPA Foundation's mission is to ensure we can continue to inspire and shape contemporary theatre from a regional perspective. Amazingly, NORPA is one of only a few regional theatre companies in Australia that creates original stories. Our stories are inspired by our region and people, but remain universal in how they touch hearts, inspire thought and very importantly, contribute to Australia's collective cultural landscape. Through ticket sales we are able to bring to Lismore a quality Season by Australia's best performing arts companies. However, what is not so observable to audiences is NORPA's work in education, youth and local Indigenous culture... and this is where the NORPA Foundation comes in. Our education program provides access to over 1,800 primary and secondary school students from across the Northern Rivers each year. We have partnered successfully with the Catholic Schools Office Diocese of Lismore in the past two years and we are keen to expand this important contact. Bundjalung Nghari, our Indigenous program, is at the forefront of Australian theatre. Driven, empowered and inspired by Bundjalung artists and elders, Bundjalung culture and lore is the basis of some of the most seminal new performance work being developed in our country. To quote Rhoda Roberts, 'NORPA is the only regional theatre company where Indigenous artists and leaders are creators and decision makers'. To continue our programs and do more than tour metropolitan work, we need your support. The NORPA Foundation is designed to provide an easy, tax deductible way to contribute to the cultural development of our region. With you, we can continue our education program and develop the new work that shapes contemporary theatre from regional Australia. FOUNDATION COMMITTEE MEMBERS dr andrew binns, annie curtin, annie ivancich and nick lake

NORPA
Community norpa is deeply committed to local people and our community.
We deliver cultural opportunities throughout our region and support a variety of initiatives, with a focus on indigenous culture, young audiences, local industry and skills development.
BUNDJALUNG NGHARI
THEATRE FOR SCHOOLS
The Bundjalung Nghari project will share and celebrate Bundjalung culture and stories, foster emerging indigenous artists, rekindle local pride and build the community’s national profile. Led by local Indigenous artists, it is a major focus for NORPA.
Our Theatre in Schools program is designed to provide access to theatre to the region’s student population, whilst also working with local educators and groups to involve students in the theatre making process — providing possibilities to imagine, create and learn more.
Bundjalung Nghari can only happen in our region where youth and custodians engage in the inter-generational exchange of language and custom. The Bundjalung cultural vibrancy directly imbues and influences the creative development of this program.
2017 sees an exciting Season of shows to engage young people. Local schools have been sent our 2017 Theatre for Schools program and are welcome to book groups into our school performances (not included in this brochure). We offer student group prices with teachers complimentary, provide comprehensive education resources specific to each show, Q&A opportunities, workshops, backstage tours and opportunities to meet the cast.
WORKSHOPS
There’s nothing quite as rewarding as learning first hand from experts in the field. Throughout the year, NORPA runs training workshops and professional development courses, often in conjunction with our touring partners. For more information contact associatedirector@norpa.org.au

If you would like more information about our program please contact our marketing department — marketingmanager@norpa.org.au
UNDER 25
At NORPA we aim to foster a unique community experience that is open to all and we encourage all community members to join us at shows. This Season we have introduced a simplified pricing structure that allowed us to expand our youth price from under 18 to under 25, to ensure our shows are more accessible to young people.
INTERNSHIP
NOT-FOR-PROFIT
Each year NORPA provides Season tickets to local registered not-for-profit organisations to be used in their fundraising activities. To be eligible, the organisation must operate locally, benefit our community’s wellbeing and be socially inclusive. This year Red Inc and Our Kids have received 2017 Season passes. We also provide show tickets to many local schools and community groups. For more information contact marketingmanager@norpa.org.au
NORPA works with local employment and training organisations TAFE and NORTEC to develop and facilitate an internship program for event, tourism and hospitality students. The nature of the events and performances at Lismore City Hall will provide interns an experience that readies them for any type of event and or cultural venue in Australia.
