NORPA 2013 Season

N O S A 20 1 3 S E

Turning twenty - how good does it feel to hit your stride, knowing that your best adventures are ahead of you? That’s how we feel at NORPA. As we reach something of a milestone we see nothing but potential in the coming years. The secret to our success? We’ve stayed relevant to a receptive and vibrant community. Touring companies repeatedly tell us how much they love performing to a NORPA audience – that they sense a palpable energy in the room and a willingness to get on board with new ideas. Without doubt, our audience is our inspiration – always brave and ready to take an imaginative leap with us. It’s this dynamic that has given us the freedom to be daring and look to the future with confidence. Our 2013 Season presents six new works that comment on the here and now; works that reflect our world back to us. Each one made me sit up and take notice. There is the outcast creature looking for love in the gothic classic, Frankenstein; the search for happiness with Shaun Parker’s highly physical dance, Happy As Larry; the brilliant, but disturbed poet in The Haunting of Daniel Gartrell; the New York songbird, raconteur, and performance artist, Taylor Mac; sensual, mind-blowing circus with Knee Deep; and finally, a breathtaking re-imagining of The Wizard of Oz, which promises to be a fantasy equal to, and delightfully different from, the one we know. This year’s Season is much shorter due to the renovation of Lismore City Hall, our home. We’re excited about the changes and can’t wait to bring you theatre in our fabulous new space. See you there! THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS / 1997

celebrating 20 years NORPA is twenty years old! No wait make that twenty years young! You may think twenty years is no time at all, but it is several lifetimes for a regional theatre company. In the years that NORPA has spent developing and evolving its innovative model, sadly, most other regional theatre companies have disappeared from the Australian landscape. NORPA’s survival, in a local and wider context, is nothing short of heroic. Pretty damn amazing! There have been hardscrabble times when it all seemed too much for exhausted staff, with impossible deadlines and no money to pay bills or wages. But it has all been worthwhile. There have been events like Michael Kieran Harvey’s playing of Messiaen’s enormous solo piano cycle Vingt regards sur l’enfantJésus (“Twenty gazes on the child Jesus”); the joyous Aboriginal musicals, Bran Nue Day and Corrugation Road; Lyndon Terracini’s crazy turn as Mr. Barbecue; and last year’s triumphant sell-out season of Julian Louis’ Railway Wonderland.

Who could possibly forget the banshee howl of The Cars That Ate Paris that announced NORPA’s arrival in 1993, with ferals flying from the roof of Lismore City Hall (without safety harnesses!) to the roar of Harley Davidsons and stock cars doing donuts in Bounty Street? And how cute were the school kids in animal masks parading two by two behind Noah in NORPA’s, almost rained out (of course!), production of The Flood? These are homegrown shows based on local stories and events, using local artists. The telling of local stories that celebrate our region has been NORPA’s philosophy since its raucous inception. There is much to look back on, from NORPA’s humble beginnings and the vision of its founders, through to the the ongoing commitment of its current custodians. NORPA has given us some truly unforgettable moments in the theatre, on the riverbank, the railway platform, and about town. The best news? There is so much more to come.

Words by Janis Balodis – writer, local legend and longtime NORPA collaborator

Mary Shelley’s classic tale re-imagined in a spine-tingling new version by Nick Dear

NORPA presents an Ensemble Theatre production

FRANKENSTEIN by nick dear “ Nick Dear’s retelling of this classic tale sent shockwaves through the theatre world in the UK. I had to bring it to Lismore!” Julian louis ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Thrilling, moving, scary and beautiful – a man born as an adult has to survive on his wits and learn fast. This is a rollercoaster ride of a story - fast, furious, haunting and entertaining… a Frankenstein with a mission. The Creature is cast out by his creator, the young doctor Frankenstein, and unleashed upon the world. He is shunned for his grotesque appearance and spurned by society wherever he goes. When a blind man takes Frankenstein’s monstrous creation under his wing and educates him, the Creature begins to question his existence and to yearn for a future without loneliness. His search for a lifelong partner brings him back to his maker, with vengeance foremost in his mind. Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre has gathered together a dynamic cast of actors who, along with a live musician, take to the stage in this classic gothic drama.

What makes us happy? Happy as Larry is a funny, playful and poignant new dance show, investigating the elusive nature of human happiness. Created by award-winning Australian choreographer, Shaun Parker, this powerful performance combines an intoxicating, free-flowing mix of ballet, break-dance, roller-skating and highly physical contemporary dance. The cast of characters is developed from the Enneagram, a psychological system that maps nine personality types: The Perfectionist; the Giver; the Performer; the Tragic Romantic; the Observer; the Devil’s Advocate; the Optimist; the Boss; and the Mediator – all rich inspiration for Shaun Parker’s insightful creativity. Set to a vibrant electro-acoustic score, the performers look at how each personality type gives rise to the idea of happiness. Fun and danger is brought to the fore in this innovative and moving dance work.

“ It’s smiles all round – on stage and in the audience. You have to welcome a dance piece about happiness… delightful.” sydney morning herald

Legendary New York performance artist, Taylor Mac, presents one hundred years of popular song in one glorious evening

NORPA presents a Paul Lucas Production

the 20th century concert an abridged history of popular music “ Great performers tell us more about ourselves and society than we expect. Taylor Mac is a brave, irreverent, cross-dressing cabaret legend from New York…He should feel right at home in Lismore!” Julian louis ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Taylor Mac in concert A flamboyant chameleon, Taylor Mac, is best known for his words, music, and socio-political outbursts. Made-up to the hilt and dressed to the nines, Mac takes us on a genderbending journey into our collective past and takes a fanciful look at the future. Taking a song from each decade of the 20th-century, Mac’s sacrificial ritual is both satirical and poignantly honest.

Sensual, mind-blowing circus from Australia’s hottest new company, Casus

NORPA presents a Casus production

knee deep “ I love how circus has evolved as an art form – it’s become sensual, dramatic and complex – it’s not just about showing the trick anymore, it’s about human nature.” Julian louis ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Have you ever had a show leave you speechless? Knee Deep is an inventive blend of circus and modern media from Australia’s hottest new circus company, Casus. This is circus from the heart, astonishing skills and exquisite beauty from four performers at the top of their game. Individually they are extremely talented performers, but together they create a brain-meltingly spectacular experience. Each moment is full of beauty, grace and amazing muscle control that stretches the limits of human agility and highlights the inherent sensuality of acrobatics. Hot off the heels from a smash European tour, Casus bring humanity into circus through a breathtaking and fragile display of skill.

“ Awe-inspiring …full of extraordinary skill, brute strength and exquisite beauty”. THE GUARDIAN UK

Creative development supported by NORPA In her tin caravan, walled by Wizard of Oz memorabilia, handmade straw effigies, and wearing a well-worn fur coat the colour of a lion’s mane, Judy G waits. A cyclone is gathering speed over her flyspeck rural town, and she’s ready. She’s got a transistor radio; she’s got emergency supplies; the TV’s tuned to news; things are tied down and taped up. She’s ready, goddamnit. And it better not pass over without taking her up in it. Maxine Mellor and The Danger Ensemble’s incarnation of The Wizard of Oz is a fairytale for modern times: of fame, fantasy and those fifteen minutes. What happens when you don’t get your whirlwind?

RAILWAY WONDERLAND / 2012

let’s talk about norpa

Formed in 1993, NORPA is a leading regional theatre company, based in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. Lismore is our physical and spiritual home – we draw inspiration from the landscape, history, people and culture. We are driven to tell our stories in accessible and dynamic ways. Our works challenge perceptions of the performing arts – they are playful, site specific and physical. They use dance, circus, visual art, live music, surprising locations, audience interaction, and all manner of human and technological skill to tell the story. Our projects are ambitious and take us, and our audiences, to new places. Our original works connect us to our community – they are made to be relevant and to capture the imagination and spirit of this region. And they are well-received. Our homegrown shows are performed before large, sell-out crowds. We also program works from leading and emerging national companies that reflect the diversity of our community – we balance risky productions with sure-fire entertainment. We love to spark robust conversation in the foyer – and we love to surprise our audiences. NORPA is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status led by a management committee of local professionals, run by a small team of theatre and venue professionals, and supported by a large group of volunteers. NORPA also manages the Lismore City Hall, on behalf of Lismore City Council, as a venue for hire as well as a space for many different community gatherings.

TELLING OUR STORIES

“Generator is NORPA’s program for creating new work with regional and national artists. Established regionally. Recognised nationally. We develop our theatre from scratch – fresh and local. NORPA is one of only a handful of theatre companies in Australia creating work in a regional context. We’re passionate about local creation. We tackle significant social issues. We collaborate with community groups, businesses, leading theatre companies and professional artists across Australia. We have our own unique, engaging theatre style. NORPA is part of the conversation defining contemporary Australian performing arts and storytelling. ”

Julian Louis, Artistic Director

Railway Wonderland — 2012

Beautiful Bones — 2012

Staged at Lismore’s train station, Railway Wonderland reconnected the community with their disused train line and, by extension, forgotten stories of the past. NORPA is seeking partnerships to bring Railway Wonderland back to our tracks in 2014.

Choreographer Brian Lucas, one of Australia’s most exciting theatrical visionaries, collaborated with three leading regional dancers and visual artist, Kellie O’Dempsey, to create Beautiful Bones.

Open House — 2011

Engine — 2010

Open House was staged as a mock inspection of an ‘open house’, hosted by The Pitts, a family of vaudeville-inspired acrobats, at a mystery location. Touring in 2013 to Darwin Festival and Tiwi Islands Arts Festival.

All too familiar in a regional area, Engine explored the tragedy of young lives lost on our roads and the aftermath for a family dealing with their grief. Each performance had a chorus of students from a local high school devise and perform key scenes with the actors.

MY RADIO HEART

THE RETURN (working title)

My Radio Heart uses dance, large-scale audio-visuals, punk rock, electronica and country and western music to explore love and friendship in the 21st Century. It will be performed by an ensemble of able-bodied performers and performers with a physical and mental disability, including Tralala Blip, a locally based, nationally recognised electro band. Directed by Rosie Dennis, Artistic Director of Urban Theatre Projects, and performed and created with a host of local talent.

Creative duo Julian Louis and Janis Balodis (Engine and Railway Wonderland) team up with a brilliant cast of theatre makers and musician Shenzo Gregory (Railway Wonderland) to create a suburban tragicomedy. A simple, ‘innocent’ man returns to visit his sister now living in the family home. A beautiful woman is renting the house next door. Not wanting to impose on his sister he sets up camp in the backyard. How long does he intend to stay? How to get rid of him? And is that lonely neighbour growing a cash crop? Pretty soon everyone ends up in the shed to confide in the fool… How can the return of one man affect so many lives?

Partnerships include Urban Theatre Projects (Sydney), disability service providers Multitask and Red Inc., Arts NSW, and Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation.

Inspired by Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot this work will be highly inventive and dynamic theatre that explores our notions of inheritance, of who is ‘good’, and who is living a lie. Developed in partnership with Northern Rivers Conservatorium and proudly supported by Linnaeus Estate.

THE HOME PROJECT

THE GATHERING – Bundjalung in Story

The Home Project explores homelessness and its particular nature in the Northern Rivers. Now in its third phase, The Home Project focuses on Lismore’s iconic Winsome Hotel, its residents, and people who use the Lismore Soup Kitchen on a weekly basis.

The Gathering (working title) is a project that connects with the Bundjalung community through open forums, workshops and performance.

In 2013 NORPA is running free workshops in music and sound design, video making and dance with leading national and local artists. Winsome residents and guests of Lismore Soup Kitchen will share their most unforgettable meals, cooking them together and recording their stories. These stories will then form the basis of a future theatre event.

The work will be created in Lismore under the artistic stewardship of Bundjalung artist, Rhoda Roberts, in collaboration with choreographer Frances Rings (Bangarra Dance Theatre) and NORPA Artistic Director, Julian Louis. The Gathering aims to share Bundjalung culture and stories, strengthen local pride, and build the community’s national profile. Partnerships include the Australia Council for the Arts, Bundjalung Elders Council and The Boomerang Festival.

Partnerships include Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, Southern Cross University and Lismore Soup Kitchen. For more information about our Generator program or if you are interested in partnering and supporting Generator please contact NORPA’s General Manager Emily Berry - manager@norpa.org.au

Mobiles, cameras and recording equipment Photography or recording of any kind is not permitted in the theatre. And remember to turn off mobile phones and pagers when you enter the theatre.

Access for all As a result of the renovations, Lismore City Hall has greatly improved disabled access. There is a lift from ground level to the theatre with entry from both Ballina Road and Bounty St. A hearing loop is in operation in the Lismore City Hall theatre. It is advised to contact the Box Office for assistance with the hearing loop and seating for disabled patrons. Parking For evening performances at Lismore City Hall parking is available in Bounty Street, Molesworth St and on Ballina Road.
