REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2022

North Carolina’s state orchestra, an orchestra achieving the highest level of artistic quality and performance standards, and embracing our dual legacies of statewide service and music education

2022 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 1 STRONGER WITH YOU!
90 YEARS

Welcome

Dear Friends,

What a year it has been!

We are tremendously proud of the North Carolina Symphony’s accomplishments in 2022. Despite the continued challenges that COVID-19 presented, we welcomed audiences back to the concert halls to hear stellar guest artists and conductors in performances with our spectacular musicians. We continued our artistic commitments including commissioning new works and expanding our reach through robust music education programs. We celebrated Music Director Laureate Grant Llewellyn, and announced, with much excitement, our new Music Director, Carlos Miguel Prieto. In its 90th year, the North Carolina Symphony has continued to demonstrate resilience and leadership, in no small part due to your support .

In this report, we seek to bring to life the orchestra’s mission and its values: artistic excellence, statewide service, and music education for all. You will see the diverse artists, programs and partners who share in our work, and audiences who have returned in person and online to celebrate making and appreciating music together. Most importantly, you will see a record of the impact of your continued support of this great orchestra. THANK YOU!

We look optimistically to the future, emerging from the depths of the pandemic with renewed vigor bolstered by the generosity of individuals, foundations, and the corporate community, all underpinned by transformational and forward-thinking support from the State of North Carolina. Thank you for your continued commitment to the North Carolina Symphony. We look forward to seeing you at a concert soon!

Sincerely,

2 NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY

Artistic Excellence: Together Again!

It has been exciting to welcome audiences to concerts throughout the state this year!

Against many odds, your North Carolina Symphony accomplished a great deal artistically in 2021/22, welcoming stellar guest artists and conductors, continuing our artistic commitments, commissioning new works, and achieving our diversity and inclusion goals.

Announcing Carlos Miguel Prieto

With much excitement, we announced the appointment of Carlos Miguel Prieto as Music Director. Carlos first conducted the North Carolina Symphony in 2011 and is celebrated worldwide for his collaborative style and expressive interpretations, for premiering and personally commissioning works by composers of the Americas, and for his efforts to foster cultural exchange through music.

Honoring Grant Llewellyn

In recognition of his 16-season artistic legacy with the North Carolina Symphony, Music Director Laureate Grant Llewellyn received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from First Lady Kristin Cooper and Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Secretary Reid Wilson. David Clegg, Chair of the Raleigh Arts Commission, presented him with the Raleigh Medal of Arts.

Commissioning New Work

The talented musicians of the North Carolina Symphony performed the world premiere of Spirituals of Liberation, by our Composer in Residence, Dr. Anthony Kelley. Supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission, the work was presented in Cary, New Bern, Tarboro, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, and Elizabeth City, and is part of our Music Education Concert program in 2022/23.

Music Education: Expanding Our Reach

By combining our traditional in-person offerings with virtual learning opportunities, we expanded our reach to children and their families throughout the state. In total, we served more than 150,000 students across North Carolina and beyond through our digital and in-person education programs.

In collaboration with The Concert Truck, North Carolina Symphony (NCS) musicians kicked off our return to in-person performances in October 2021, visiting schools and community centers in southeast Raleigh, and in Sampson, Greene, and Gates Counties. On January 5, we welcomed students back to Meymandi Concert Hall for our first in-person Music Education Concert in two years. Soon after, we resumed statewide Music Education Concerts and side-by-side rehearsals with student musicians.

Amazing experience!!!! Thank you and all of the folks… who made today possible!

Education Highlights

• Students and teachers across the state accessed our 2021/22 virtual Education Concert and our Virtual Interactive Stage program, supported by MetLife Foundation.

• We produced a bilingual video in English and Spanish of Peter and the Wolf for students in grades K-2, sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina.

• More than 500 teachers used our online videos and lesson plans, sponsored by Puffin Foundation West, Ltd., introducing students to the core elements of music.

We wrapped up our 3-Year Jones County residency, made possible by the Simple Gifts Fund, with musician and ensemble visits to each elementary school in the county. Despite the challenges of Hurricane Florence and the global pandemic, our work in Jones County showed how music can bring a community together.

Thank you to the State of North Carolina and our lead education supporters.

State Connections: More Present Than Ever Across North Carolina

From Ashe, Buncombe, and Haywood to Dare and Gates, and from New Hanover to Vance, your North Carolina Symphony touched music lovers in counties across the state. We are especially grateful that new, dedicated funding from the State of North Carolina will allow us to enhance our presence in the western part of the state in 2022/23 and beyond.

[Dr. Kelley’s] presence made such an impact on our students, and I hope it is something that they will think about for a long time. It made our experience at the Symphony truly special when they saw him in the audience at Meymandi!
