Letter from

THE MAYOR

Welcome

to Koka Booth Amphitheatre and the North Carolina Symphony’s Summerfest! On behalf of the entire Cary Town Council and the more than 167,000 people who call Cary home, welcome to Cary’s premier outdoor performance venue — the summer home of the North Carolina Symphony and more than 60 other performances and festivals where we can enjoy outstanding events in this spectacular facility. From its lakeside location inside a Piedmont forest, to its internationally renowned design, to the very materials used in its construction, Booth Amphitheatre is second to none. In addition to the great symphony concerts, I invite you to take advantage of the wide variety of events and activities, from our Movies by Moonlight series to colorful festivals and a dazzling line-up of national touring concerts including a return visit by “Weird Al” Yankovic (playing with the Symphony no less!), the legendary Travis Tritt and Charlie Daniels, and recent Grammy Award-winning singer Kacey Musgraves, among many others. We hope you accept our personal invitation to join the thousands of us who regularly retreat to the extraordinary events and beautiful surroundings here at Booth Amphitheatre. Entertainment – naturally!

ABOUT YOUR SYMPHONY

Each year, the North Carolina Symphony’s 300 concerts, education programs, and community engagement events are enjoyed by adults and schoolchildren in more than 90 North Carolina counties. The Symphony’s full-time professional musicians perform under the artistic leadership of Music Director Grant Llewellyn, delivering orchestral experiences of the highest quality and collaborating with renowned performers that range from classical artists, to bluegrass musicians, to jazz bands. NCS leads the most extensive education program of any symphony orchestra, engaging 70,000 students annually. The Symphony makes its home in the spectacular Meymandi Concert Hall at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. NCS travels 18,500 miles per year for performances throughout the state, including its concert series in Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, New Bern, Southern Pines, and Wilmington, as well as its Summerfest concerts at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. Founded in 1932, NCS performs under the auspices of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

ABOUT OUR CONDUCTORS MUSIC DIRECTOR

GRANT LLEWELLYN

The Maxine and Benjamin Swalin Chair Music Director of the North Carolina Symphony and Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne, Grant Llewellyn is renowned for his exceptional charisma, energy, and easy authority in music of all styles and periods. Born in Tenby, South Wales, Llewellyn won a Conducting Fellowship to the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts in 1985. As Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the early 1990s, he conducted at the Tanglewood Music Festival, and on classical series and Boston Pops concerts. Grant Llewellyn has conducted many orchestras in North America and Europe. As Music Director of the Handel and Haydn Society, America’s leading period orchestra, Llewellyn gained a reputation as a formidable interpreter of music of the Baroque and classical periods. Llewellyn has led NCS in four critically acclaimed recordings, most recently Britten’s Cello Symphony and Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante, both with cellist Zuill Bailey. A spring 2019 concert with NCS, featuring Zuill Bailey and violist Roberto Díaz in Strauss’ Don Quixote, was recorded for future release.

Deeply committed and passionate about engaging young people with music, Llewellyn regularly leads education activities with NCS and around the world. ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR

WESLEY SCHULZ The Lucy Moore Ruffin Chair Wesley Schulz was appointed NCS Associate Conductor in the 2017/18 season and is also Music Director of the Auburn Symphony Orchestra. Previously, Schulz served as Music Director of the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Festival Orchestra, and as Director of Orchestras at the University of Puget Sound. In the 2014/15 season, Schulz was the Conducting Fellow at the Seattle Symphony. Upcoming and recent conducting engagements include the Austin Symphony Orchestra, The Venice Symphony, Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, and the Juneau Symphony. Schulz graduated magna cum laude with bachelor’s degrees in percussion performance and music education from Ball State University, and doctoral and master’s degrees in orchestral conducting from the University of Texas at Austin. When not on the podium, he can be seen hitting the pavement in preparation for his next marathon.
