 Letter From the Editor | FALL 2014

Welcome

AS WE HEAD INTO FALL, WE MAY NOT GET TO EXPERIENCE A DRASTIC DROP IN TEMPERATURE OR SEE ANY LEAVES ON TREES CHANGING COLOR, BUT WE DO GET TO CHANGE UP OUR WARDROBE SOME AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE ARRIVAL OF FOOTBALL SEASON! And, of course, the start of school. In this issue, we cover all things fall.

Our featured woman, Sasha Gates, is fashionable and knows a thing or two about football. She is the wife of our beloved San Diego Charger Antonio Gates. I’m convinced that after reading our article on Sasha, you will like her as much as you do the Chargers! For all of you non-football fans…read it anyhow because her words are worth reading. On the fashion front, Stephanie Lewis shows us just how closely related fashion and football truly are! And Denise Vakili encourages us to use our imaginations when looking at her fashion editorial of designer Victoria Roberts and her clothing line WishNow. Every mother will be dreaming of putting her daughter in one of WishNow’s dresses, as they are magical. For those of us who enjoy watching football and having a libation, Megan Arterberry educates us on the lovely pairing of beer (a football staple) and cheese (every woman’s first true love, right?). I’d also like to share with our readers our latest and greatest partnership. Cindy Matalucci of The Pulse San Diego will grace each issue of North County Woman with all things entertaining in San Diego and beyond. She is truly the “E News” of San Diego, and we are so excited to share the fabulous places and people Cindy will bring to the magazine. San Diego County is vast; thankfully Cindy has “the pulse” on the numerous businesses and events within our area. I’m confident you will learn of something new through Cindy’s on-the-scene coverage.

JULY WAS A BUSY AND FUN-FILLED MONTH AT HERA HUB CARLSBAD. They celebrated their first year in business, and launched the Authors’ Salon. To mark the occasion of their first birthday, members gathered at a luncheon to network, eat cake and share their business successes. The “Year in Review” movie montage caused laughter and many memories were shared. Complimentary monthly member-only events are a time to meet new friends, share ideas and resources, learn from other community members and catch up on news. Catherine Mowbray-Lorenz, Chief Experience Officer at Hera Hub, Carlsbad, in collaboration with member L.C. Scott, founder of eFrog Press and an author herself, created the concept of an Authors’ Salon, which was presented on July 22nd. The Authors’ Salon, which is open to the public, was designed to provide a forum for writers to learn, share their talents and collaborate on literary resources. The July evening program opened with a brief talk by Tanya Brown. She read excerpts from her book, Finding Peace Amid the Chaos. As the youngest sister of Nicole Brown Simpson, Tanya suffered a mental breakdown 10 years after the death of her sister, and spent many months as a patient in mental health programs. Her candid message of hope and courage inspired the audience. Joining presenters Scott and Brown was Hera Hub member and best-selling young adult fiction author Kristina Ludwig. A former pharmacist, Kristina is now a full-time author, blogger and writing coach. She has published 12 e-books on Amazon, including the bestselling Amish Hearts and Amish in College series.

The next Authors’ Salon will be held the evening of October 14 and will feature Susan Meissner, author of 13 books including Girl in the Glass, winner of the 2013 San Diego Book Award. Her latest book, A Fall of Marigolds, is a compelling story that will take you to the halls of Ellis Island’s Hospital in 1911, as well as the streets of Manhattan in the present day. She will be joined by indie author M. Louisa Locke who writes cozy mysteries set in Victorian San Francisco. Her success as a self-published author allowed her to retire early as a history professor at Mesa College. Her latest title is Bloody Lessons: A Victorian San Francisco Mystery. Authors’ Salon will be presented quarterly at Hera Hub, Carlsbad. For more information, email authorssalon@herahub.com The Inaugural Women Investing in Women Summit, converged in San Diego on July 18 – 19th at the University of San Diego. Silvia Mah, CEO of Hera Labs, the business accelerator arm of Hera Hub, and Felena Hanson, founder of Hera Hub organized the event. The twoday program for 140 attendees, included keynote presentations by business leaders, panel discussions, example pitch session and hands-on breakout sessions focused on teaching women the basics of angel investing and providing entrepreneurs the requisite tools to access capital. To reach an even larger audience of women investors and female founders, a twitter competition ran the entire length of the summit which resulted in the trending of #womeninvestSD in San Diego, reaching more than 1 million viewers. Hera Hub is a membership-based, spa-inspired, flexible coworking and meeting space for entrepreneurial women. Hera Hub has three locations in San Diego and is currently franchising nationally. www.herahub.com

On the Scene | THE PULSE - COMIC CON 2014 

The Pulse: On the Scene at Comic Con 2014 BY CINDY MATALUCCI

EVERY YEAR, COMIC CON SAN DIEGO DRAWS A HUGE CROWD TO OUR FABULOUS CITY. Since it’s inception in 1970, it has grown bigger and bigger every year topping over 130,000 attendees. This year the tickets sold out in 9 minutes flat! This event draws more A-list celebrities to our city then any other San Diego event not to mention it brings about 163 million in revenue to our local economy. The Pulse team had the honor of attending this year and covering some of the fun festivities. We also got to sit down with some very cool celebrities for exclusive interviews. On Friday, we headed down to the Convention Center to brave the crowds of 130,000 plus fans packed into our city. The Convention Center has a giant exhibit hall of 460,000 square feet featuring comics and all aspects of the popular arts, including hands-on workshops and educational and academic programming such as the Comics Arts Conference; anime and film screenings, games; the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, the “Oscars” of the comics industry; a Masquerade costume competition with prizes and trophies; an Autograph Area; an Art Show; and Portfolio Reviews, bringing together aspiring artists with major companies. We checked out all the new swag and exhibits, running into a few storm rangers and even Darth Vader! On the streets, we ran into many fans in cool costumes including Angelina Jolie’s “Maleficent.” We got to hit the the VIP party at The Hardrock Hotel for “MockingJay” the new Hunger Games installment and get our hologram picture with Katniss & Peta. We were also given an exclusive preview of the trailer to the new movie which looks fantastic. Next, it was on to the VIP lounges hosted by Xbox and Samsung. We were treated to free food and drinks, as well as fun activities like photo booths and trying out the new Xbox Halo games! Very cool. On Saturday, we had a full day of work ahead of us. We started off the morning at the Sleepy Hollow Virtual Reality experience presented by Fox. You head into a barn and put on virtual “oculus rift” glasses for an experience which transports you to Sleepy Hollow, where you have an encounter with the Headless Horseman! We then met the fabulous cast and interviewed them. The cast included: Nicole Beharie, Tom Mison, Orlando Jones, Katia, Winter and Lyndie Greenwood. This was a pinch-me moment as we LOVE the show and are huge fans. I got to ask the tough questions to Tom Mison who plays Ichabod Crane on the show. Of course, I asked about the love triangle between his character, his wife, and his colleague Lt. Abbie Mills. We then headed over to the autograph pavilion area to interview Actor Cas Anvar who is known for the Assassin’s Creed Movies, as well as a new Sci-fi series he is starring in called “Nobility.” Cass has starred in countless movies and TV shows including “Castle,” and “Diana.” Next, we rushed over to the Fox 24 “Live Another Day” one-of-a-kind, interactive drone flying experience at Petco Park. We got the opportunity to learn how to fly a drone and I even landed mine on a table! Very fun. Unfortunately, we missed seeing Kiefer Sutherland who was not able to make it. Finally, we ended our day at the Courtyard Cosplay Experience, hosted by Greg Nicotero, makeup wizard for the show “The Walking Dead,” and Norman Reedus, who plays “Daryl Dixon” on “The Walking Dead.” Greg & Norman judged a a costume contest at the Superhero HQ site. This was followed by a question and answer panel, at which we were honored to interact and interview Norman and Greg! It was a fabulous four days of festivities for our team, and we cannot wait for next year! For interviews and more coverage check out our site www.thepulsesd.com

FOR EASY, ELEGANT ENTERTAINING THIS FALL SEASON, CREATE AN ARTISAN CHEESE PLATTER AND PAIR WITH LOCAL BEER, AS OPPOSED TO WINE, FOR A FUN TWIST. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens based in Escondido brews their own craft beer and pairs it with local produce, hormone-free meats, and artisan breads and cheeses. Their Stinky Cheese Plate is paired with their Cali-Belgique IPA, giving great inspiration for easy entertaining at home. Stone Cali-Belgique IPA is Stone IPA beer brewed with a Belgian yeast strain. The beer has strong hoppy citrus and pine aroma with flavors of pear, clove, banana, apple, and a peppery finish. It’s a wonderful beer to pair with various cheeses. Organizing Your Wardrobe After Summer Comes Fall BY DENISE LEVINE

THOSE OF US IN SAN DIEGO KNOW THAT WE DO HAVE SUBTLE CHANGES IN SEASONS. You don’t want to be caught looking like you’re stuck in summer when it is fall and the temperatures start to cool down slightly. Here is how you can do that easily with my three wardrobe “Do’s”, three “Don’ts”, and the fall 2014 trends.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS WHEN SETTING UP AN ESTATE PLAN IS DECIDING WHOM TO CHOOSE AS SUCCESSOR TRUSTEE AND POWER OF ATTORNEY. In other words, who becomes responsible for making financial decisions if you are incapacitated or pass away? For some people the choice is obvious and may include a parent, close friend, sibling, or even an adult child. For others, the choice is more complicated. For example, maybe your parents are deceased or are of advanced age; perhaps you have siblings, but they do not live close by; or maybe you have a friend who would be a good choice, but you do not want to burden him/her with this task when they are already busy with their own lives and responsibilities. As for the parents who choose to nominate an adult child, they often worry about how giving the responsibility to one child over another will affect that child’s relationship with the other siblings. The good news is that there is an easy solution for people who are unsure of whom to nominate for successor trustee and power of attorney. A professional fiduciary is a person whose job it is to manage people’s finances and/or estates for them. Professional fiduciaries are licensed and regulated by the Professional Fiduciaries Bureau under the Department of Consumer Affairs in California, and they are held to the highest standards of care for management of other people’s money. Often, banks and wealth management companies will have people within the company who

provide the service of professional fiduciary, especially for high, net-worth clientele. There are also private professional fiduciary companies who cater to people in all situations regardless of minimum net wealth. They can be called upon to do everything from paying bills, to managing investments, to administering and distributing an estate after a person’s death. The fees for the service of a private professional fiduciary vary, but it is not uncommon in today’s market to see a private professional fiduciary charge an annual fee (while they are actively managing tasks for someone) of approximately one percent (1%) of the value of the estate. Although this is a cost that you normally would not have to incur if you simply had a friend or family member in these roles, many people feel it is worth every dime to have a professional fiduciary knowing that their affairs will be handled properly and professionally without burdening anyone along the way or compromising the harmony of their children’s relationships. Too often I have seen people put off creating their estate plan at all because they do not feel they have an individual who can serve as the successor trustee and power of attorney. Don’t fall into this trap when there are options are out there for you. Your estate planning attorney should be able to provide you with a variety of referrals to help you get started with interviewing and selecting a professional fiduciary if you feel this may be a good solution for you.

Featured Woman

SashaGates WIFE, MOTHER AND SO MUCH MORE BY KERRY WRIGHT PHOTOS COURTESY OF BOYD HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHS

THEY SAY BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL MAN IS A STRONG WOMAN. This is surely the case with Sasha Gates. Yes, Sasha is the wife of our favorite San Diego Charger, Antonio Gates. But what everyone doesn’t know is how truly amazing Sasha is! She is a woman who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to make her dreams reality. She’s brimming with creativity and you can see it in her eyes. But what really struck me about Sasha is her devotion to her family. They come before anything. She is a woman who has her priorities straight and a solid moral compass. I was so impressed with her truly genuine nature and intrigued by the various talents she possesses. I’m an avid football fan and even confessed to Sasha that my favorite team is the Minnesota Vikings (to which she responded with a little boo!). But, after meeting Sasha it made me think about all the women behind these famous athletes we all love but don’t know. These women play just as an important role as the famous men they support. Here’s a glimpse into Sasha – the woman who deserves to be recognized for her place in the world and the meaningful contributions she’s making every day! NCW: It’s our fall issue and its football season. We might as well get this question out of the way. What is it like being married to a professional football player? Personally, I think it would it be really difficult (except for getting good seats to games!) sharing your husband and your life with the public. SG: Being married to my husband feels pretty normal, even though he is a famous football player. When we first started dating, I didn’t know much about the sport or who he was. I was able to get to know the real man outside of that world, and I feel like I've known him all my life. Although Antonio is a famous tight end, I see him as the sweet, loving, humble man I got to know and married. My husband’s life is football…until he comes home. Home is his peace away from work. We almost never talk about his job. When he comes home from work, I like to have a home-cooked meal on the table waiting for him and add a little extra tender, loving, care from me! The most difficult part of being a professional football player’s wife is sitting on the edge of my seat watching my husband play hoping that he doesn't get hurt. It's a rough sport, and I worry about him coming home injured or in pain. So far, we have been blessed and he's still standing strong. NCW: You had a career before marrying Antonio. Tell us about it. SG: I was a model signed to Wilhelmina for print and commercials for years prior to meeting my husband. I enjoyed modeling, but it could also be really difficult at times. It’s really important to hold on to your self-esteem in that industry because it is challenged every day. I also used to perform with a band as a singer. My father is a musician

so it’s always been a part of my life. And something that probably very few people know about me is that I love doing makeup; however, I don’t enjoy doing your typical makeup. I like to do makeup for special effects. In fact, for several months I worked with the San Diego based business Strategic Operations. I would do makeup on faux-injured soldiers who were being used for training. It was really a lot of fun! NCW: I stopped working before I had my son, and after three years at home with him, I didn’t feel like I knew who I was anymore. I had become a wife and a mom. Those two roles consumed my identity. It felt odd to me not having my own identity, and I sort of had to rediscover who I was. Since marrying such a public figure, have you suffered at all with YOUR identity? And if so, what did you do to change it? SG: Yes. People would refer to me as Antonio Gates’ wife. I really do love that title, but I do have a name. Although it’s nice to be treated specially because of my husband’s accomplishments in professional sports, it’s still important to have my own identity. I want to be recognized for my own accomplishments. I want to set an example for my baby girl and show her that she can go out and achieve any and all goals she sets her mind to. Even if we afford her with blessings, I want her to understand that there is nothing more rewarding than accomplishing goals on your own instead of having things handed to you. I will forever strive to do better and be better. My husband calls me the Jill of all trades, because I'm always thinking of ways to be successful. Success isn't always defined by money. Success is the feeling of reward you experience when you accomplish a goal you’ve set for yourself. For me, it's making others feel good about themselves. I am the co-founder of Dolling Enterprises,

North County Woman • FALL 2014 | 17

Featured Woman which is a company that provides quality hair extensions. I also started the Dolling Foundation, which donates wigs to women who have lost their hair due to illness or tragedy. It’s a way for me to help women feel good about their appearance while enduring various life-altering experiences. Feeling good about themselves instills confidence and selfesteem, and I believe this is important. I'm also launching a line of ready-to-wear football apparel for babies called “Wittle One.” I had trouble finding cute gear for my baby during football season as did my friend, Autumn Ajirotutu, who’s expecting twins. We decided to partner together and start our own line. I can only say - stay tuned! We are going to offer the cutest football cheer gear in town for babies! NCW: You are a new mom. Congratulations! How has motherhood changed you? SG: Thank you! I feel so blessed. I didn’t know that such a special kind of love could ever exist until I had my daughter. It is the most amazing feeling! To bring a life into the world is like planting a seed and watching it grow. She's my special project. I’m excited to mold this little lady into being something great and encourage her to have an impact on the world. I think I’m most surprised at how protective I’ve become. Just a small example of this: I stepped on a spider with my bare foot when I saw it heading towards her baby chair! This may seem insignificant to some, but I am terrified of spiders! I have discovered that you will do whatever it takes to keep your baby safe! NCW: Women today are accomplishing so many great things and always blazing down new paths. Now that you have a daughter, what, to you, is the most important thing you can teach her and why? SG: There are so many things I want to teach her! I want for her to treat others as she would expect to be treated. I don’t want for her to take anything for granted, and I want her to remain humble. I want her to be confident and to always be true to herself. I want her to stand up for what she believes in! I also want for her to learn that attitude is everything! It is inevitable that she will

experience tough times and have hurdles to overcome throughout her life; however, I want her to know that such experiences promote personal growth and it’s important to take each day at a time and keep a positive attitude. I don’t ever want for her to have regret or to dwell on potentially negative experiences from the past. I want for her to always see the positive and to find the good in any situation. I truly believe it’s not about what you go through in life, but how you deal with it. A person’s response to adversity defines their character. I want for her to have strong moral character. Last, but certainly not least, I want for her to live her life for our Holy God. If she has a strong faith, everything else will fall into place as it should. NCW: I’m sure as a model you are acutely aware of what a body-conscious society we’ve become. How do you think we can encourage strong self-esteem in our young girls today? Do you worry how this might affect your daughter as she gets older? SG: I believe that healthy self-esteem is generated from the inside and runs deeper than just the surface. We can instill confidence in young girls through education and sports. Being a well-rounded individual breeds confidence. Body image is just one part of beauty, and part of looking good is feeling good. In addition, we need to encourage and acknowledge their accomplishments. Validating their achievements will help promote confidence. The more love and encouragement our young girls receive, the more secure they will become with themselves. I will also encourage my daughter not to aspire to fit into the mold society has created. I want her to embrace whatever makes her unique and know those qualities make her truly beautiful. I want her to know she can achieve anything she sets her mind to! Interviewing Sasha was such a pleasure. She is stunningly beautiful, but what really stands out about her is her kindness and compassion. She is truly an advocate for our young women and an excellent role model. We should all strive to live by Sasha’s rules and embrace what makes each and every one of us unique. Beauty lies within us all…how will you let yours shine through?

 Women & Football | BECOME A FAN

Become A Stark-Raving Football Woman!

BY CYNDI DARLINGTON

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN. My husband and I are gearing up for our most special and intimate of marriage rituals. You know, the one where we gaze into each other’s eyes and ask lovingly “ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!” I am a girl who loves me some football. NFL or college, even Pop Warner, I am a student of the game and feel lucky to be part of the millions who are enthralled by the world’s greatest sport (sorry, World Cup bandwagon fans!). NFL football really is the holy grail of all sports, and watching football with my husband is one of my greatest joys in life. Some of my best memories of our marriage center around us going to playoff games all over the country, counting down the days until kickoff each week, or sitting on the couch eight months pregnant watching our beloved Indianapolis Colts finally win the Superbowl, celebrating with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s while hubby chugged beers. A month later, my son’s labor was induced on Peyton Manning’s birthday. Yes, I love this game. And being a woman who watches, it makes for some interesting party conversation. Most guys don’t expect you to debate the merits of a 3-4 vs. a 4-3 defense at the kids’ swim party or correct them when they say that defense wins championships (see paragraph two or Google 2007 Superbowl). There are so many of us women fans out there, but shockingly, football is still largely seen as game for men. If you’re already a football lover, you understand my passion and are probably convinced that the couple that tailgates together, stays together! If not, it’s easy to fall in love with this game, for so many reasons. Football is a metaphor for life in general. In the NFL, overcoming hardships is an everyday occurrence, especially during training camp when guys are in and out faster than a Kim Kardashian husband. You want villains? Look no further than the hooded Bill Belichick, evil leader of the wildly successful New England Patriots. Or Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks, who caused a national stir by trash talking a 49er receiver, proving that (gasp!) sportsmanship is not necessarily alive and well in the NFL. Heroes? There are plenty, from well-documented charitable stalwarts like retired Charger LaDanian Tomlinson to Pat Tillman, the Arizona Cardinal who left the NFL only to sacrifice his life in Afghanistan. And redemption is always a story line, with Mike Vick continuing his comeback try with the New York Jets, proving that an old dog CAN learn new tricks (if you don’t get that pun, ask a PETA member).

Cyndi Darlington

It’s a regular US Weekly You like celebrity gossip? The NFL is a hotbed of Hollywood hijinks, from Kerry Washington’s secret marriage to cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (say that five times fast), to poor Jessica Simpson still being blamed for the demise of wunderkind Cowboy Tony Romo. The story line week-to-week is fascinating…take a little trash talk, throw in loads of testosterone, top it off with millions of dollars and freakishly athletic bodies, and the potential for off-the-field distractions is off the charts! So many ways to love it So go ahead, girls - jump in feet first. Pick a team and start to watch and read about them. Hometown team? Great. I recommend a Keenan Allen jersey – the kid should have many successful years with the Chargers ahead. Maybe pick another team that’s in a different division (that would be the NFC), and follow them too. Join a fantasy league so you can learn about the individual players. Buy some cute team gear, wear it on Sunday, Monday night and the occasional Thursday night. Read Hail Mary Blog and learn the basics of all that football gibberish. Imagine the surprise when you tell your learn the difference between a blitz and a blintz, or ask your man if quarterbacks coming through a West Coast offense system in college really ARE more successful in the pros. Football will breathe new life into any relationship! If all else fails, shallow works. Go online and Google Eric Decker, Arian Foster, Cam Newton, or just type in “NFL’s Best Bodies” - and go from there. You’ll be queen of the gridiron gals in no time!

Cyndi Darlington lives in Encinitas and writes about football for females at Hail Mary Blog – hailmaryblog.com - and on Twitter as @hailmaryblog. Humor | RAZZLE, DAZZLE, FRAZZLE 

“Well hello there,” I purred, cozying up closer to him as I peeked up to watch five grown men grunting and smashing their bodies together. “Did you ever stop to wonder if their team jerseys are made of 100% Jersey? Or do they sneak some Lycra in there? “Uh huh.” He mindlessly munched Doritos. “What daring trendsetters those brutes are - - bringing back shoulder pads like that! I think the chinstrap could be a bit much though. A simple helmet would streamline their look, while still accessorizing those head concussions perfectly. And whoever does their make-up! Haven’t they heard of waterproof mascara? It’d prevent those under-eye black marks.” “Isn’t there some fashion show luncheon thing at Nordstrom, starting right about now?” he interrupted, glancing at his watch. “Why? Would you accompany me to it?” I asked coyly. As he groaned out his negative response, I piped up, “Shhhh, I can’t hear that official man in the black and white stripes, blowing his sterling silver whistle necklace. Doesn’t he know pinstripes are so yesterday? And white pants after Labor Day! Seriously? That’s a makeover just waiting to happen.” I made tsk-tsk sounds. Just then a Victoria’s Secret commercial flashed on -- my hopes immediately renewed. But to my surprise I didn’t have to utter one word to get him engrossed. “Hey look at that TIGHT-END!” He nodded approvingly at the backside of a gorgeous model, clad in size 2 designer jeans. “Man, I’d sure like to HANDOFF to that. Then we’d HUDDLE together and talk about our next big PLAY - - a nice, long PASS. Mmm, that lingerie would put me into OVERTIME for sure.”

Football:

Black Tie Optional!?!

“Listen, I’ve been thinking.” I stammered, changing the channel. “Separate interests are actually good for couples. It gives them a sense of independence and brings variety to their relationship. Sort of a balance.”

BY STEPHANIE LEWIS

CAN A RELATIONSHIP EXIST WHERE BOTH PARTIES FEEL EQUALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT FOOTBALL AND FASHION? I’m just dying to find out! With my two ex-husbands, I was constantly left alone on the sidelines during sports season, not to mention wondering solo through shopping malls - - so I’m determined to integrate football and fashion seamlessly with the new man in my life. “You don’t realize how much the two subjects have in common,” I asserted enthusiastically to my guy last night, as his eyes riveted to the screen during Monday Night Football. I sat conspicuously nearby, turning the pages of a recent fashion spread in North County Women magazine. “Oh no! Look how she FUMBLED with her purse, looking for lipstick!” I shouted, pointing to a statuesque blonde on page 28. “And say, betcha never saw color-BLOCKING like that before! I wonder how much YARDAGE of silk that took?” He looked at me through suspiciously narrowed eyes, yawned loudly, then promptly focused his attention back to the set. One more time, giving it that old college try. . . “Well, whadya know! Vera Wang is finally gonna TACKLE the issue of HIKING up hemlines during the KICKOFF of her new fall line.” “Shhhh, Stephanie - - I can’t hear the announcer.” A new tact was definitely required. . .

“I thought you’d see it that way,” he said with a knowing smirk. “So next time you’ll be more careful what you wish for?” Sheesh, this guy really gets into teaching someone a valuable lesson, doesn’t he? But before I answered, I leaned over to grab my purse, which I then launched (with a perfect spiral!) across the living room, where it landed in the center of the coffee table. “Why’d you just chuck your handbag?” he asked incredulously. “Just showing you I can throw a winning “CLUTCHDOWN” pass better than any San Diego Charger quarterback that you know.” “Yup. Stick to writing humor columns, Stephanie. I’ll be your biggest cheerleader.” I then complimented his Pierre Cardin shirt - - And that was the end of that.

 Your Health | HEALTHY EATING

What does “You Are What You Eat!” REALLY Mean? BY MARTI AVILA

PROBABLY LIKE YOU, I’VE BEEN HEARING THE STATEMENT “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT” FOR A LONG TIME. I think I started hearing it in the mid-to-late 60’s and early 70’s when I was a teenager (Yes, I’m that old and don’t get me started on my “I’m so old” jokes!). It was a popular phrase during the hippie and vegetarian movements.

I always thought it meant that if you ate healthy, you would be skinny, energetic, calm, and beautiful. And if you ate junk, you would be overweight, sick, fatigued, miserable, and cranky. About six to eight months ago, the phrase that has lived on through numerous generations reappeared on Facebook; however, it also included a chart of body parts that renew themselves every three, six, and nine months, as well as every seven to ten years. It truly made me think about “you are what you eat” in a whole different light. My years of training in this subject made me want to share with you how long it really does take for a body part to regenerate itself, and how and what it takes to produce a healthy body (parts included). Ninety-eight percent of your body rebuilds itself in less then two years. Just about every cell in your body eventually dies and is replaced by new cells. That means that everyday we have a GREAT opportunity to contribute to rebuilding a healthier, new body by eating delicious and healthy organic fresh food. On the other hand, one can continue to accelerate the aging process and be more susceptible to illness by eating processed, sugary, dead food, or genetically modified food-like items. When you eat, actually when you just smell, see or even think about food, the digestion process begins by producing saliva. The saliva, in turn, begins to break down the food components. Chewing each small bite thoroughly (about 25 to 30 chews each) will ensure that the enzymes excreted by the salivary glands in your mouth will aid your stomach acids in digesting your food easily. Once digested, the small intestine breaks down the food mixture even further so your body can absorb all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. This digestive process is what enables your body to obtain the necessary materials to make healthy or unhealthy body parts. Hence the phrase “you are what you eat.”

Listed below are various body parts, approximate time it takes for the part to reproduce, and foods that help to support a healthier body: SKIN: The epidermal cells regenerate approximately every 14 days. •

Best foods for beautiful skin: Blueberries, wild salmon, spinach, tomatoes, and kiwi.

LIVER: A liver takes approximately 10 to 16 months to COMPLETELY regenerate itself IF it does not have cirrhosis (scarring). •

Best foods for a healthy liver: Garlic, beets, grapefruit, leafy greens, avocados, green tea, turmeric, and walnuts

RED BLOOD CELLS: Bruised and battered after traveling almost 1,000 miles through the roads of the body's circulatory system, red blood cells only last 120 days. •

Best foods to build healthy red blood cells: Citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach, beans, peas, nuts, fish, eggs, and nutritional yeasts.

BONES: The entire human skeleton is replaced every 10 years or so in adults. •

Best foods to build strong bones (and avoid osteoporosis): Turkey, chicken, egg whites, legumes, peanut butter, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, millet, brown rice, spinach, Swiss chard, most nuts, sweet potatoes, sesame seeds, flaxseed, wheat germ, cantaloupe, apricots, bananas, plums, prunes, raisins, avocados, artichokes, lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes.

So, unless you are a descendent of Dr. Frankenstein and have access to a laboratory high in the hills of Transylvania (Ok…so maybe that was Dracula) and can make/regenerate someone else’s body parts… eating healthy, organic fruits and veggies along with supplementation and practicing a healthy lifestyle, would be the second best way to regenerate a healthy body part! (For a list of supplements along with additional information on how to build a healthier body, please visit my website at www.HelloHealthyOne. com/youarewhatyoueat). Additional note on organic produce: Organic means that the fruits and vegetables have been grown without using pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in the soil or on the produce itself. Pesticides and synthetic fertilizers have been linked to tumors, cancer, autism, arthritis, toxicity, and a whole host of illnesses and diseases. Organic also ensures that the produce has NOT been bio-engineered or radiated, and is not a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO). An extra bonus to buying organic includes helping a local farmer along with building yourself a healthier and happier body. Eat and be well!

Colorectal Health: WARNING SIGNS, SYMPTOMS & PREVENTION BY KELLY MOTADEL, M.D. Chief Medical Officer, Vista Community Clinic

To be sure, please consult with your personal physician.

Upon graduating from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, she simultaneously earned her Master of Public Health while she completed her residency and internship at the University of California, San Francisco program in Fresno, CA. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. IT MAY NOT GET THE PRESS THAT BREAST CANCER DOES, BUT COLORECTAL CANCER (CRC) IS THE SECOND MOST COMMONLY DIAGNOSED CANCER IN WOMEN WORLDWIDE.1 While talking about intestines and their function isn’t pleasant, it’s important to note that one third of people diagnosed with CRC die as a result of this cancer. SYMPTOMS Catching colorectal cancer early is important. Unfortunately, often times there aren’t any symptoms in the early stage. According to one study2, symptoms can include: • Blood, appearing red or black, in your stool • Abdominal pain • Iron-deficient anemia • Change in stool patterns Often, the cancer is in its advanced stages by the time these symptoms present themselves. PREVENTION The good news is that there are ways to prevent CRC from developing in the first place. A high fat diet, sedentary lifestyle, cigarette smoking, alcohol, and obesity have all been associated with an increased risk of CRC. In addition, higher calcium intake, or use of aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. ibuprofen) have been linked to a lower CRC

risk in some studies. Still, even with a healthy lifestyle and healthy body, CRC can sneak its way in. A close family friend of mine—57 years old, healthy, and no family history of CRC—died recently from colon cancer. She had abdominal pain when she was diagnosed less than a year ago. The key to prevention lies in regularly scheduled screening tests. According to the American Cancer Society3, screenings for CRC for a woman of average risk should start at 50 years of age, earlier for those at high risk—with a family member with CRC. Screenings can be done in one of three ways: • Fecal occult blood test where a sample of your stool is sent to the lab to look for hidden blood; done annually • Sigmoidoscopy, done every five years, examines only the left side of the colon, so not as thorough as a colonoscopy • Colonoscopy, done every 10 years, looks at the entire colon and allows for removal of suspicious/precancerous polyps. Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy screenings require a thin flexible tube with a camera on the end to be inserted through the rectum. Though this causes discomfort, as with many things that are good for our health, it’s the right thing to do. Whichever method you choose, get a colorectal cancer screening. It could save your life.

 Style| FALL HAIR & MAKEUP

Bright Eyes and Fresh Cheeks Take Us Into Fall BY BRITTANY ADAMSON – FOUNDER QUATTRA VIA SALON AND SPA

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT’S REALLY TIME TO START TALKING ABOUT FALL FASHIONS AND TRENDS? For fall, the more natural the better; thus, the reason we will try to hold on to the golden-goddess bronze we picked up during the longer summer days and bask in it! But as we surge ahead at what seems to be lightening speed, I am here to help you transition your hair and makeup from summer to fall. I’ll share a few great ideas on how to spice up your look and keep the compliments coming throughout the season.

Aveda's Control Force hairspray.

Platinum is the go-to hair color for our blondes. It is edgy yet feminine. Pair it with a crop cut and it is undeniably chic! If ash or platinum is not the best look for you, add dimension to your blonde. Balayage (a French coloring technique where color is applied by hand sweeping for a more natural look) some platinum pieces around the face and mix it with golden hues throughout. It will add warmth while leaving an edge that flirts with this year’s platinum look. For redheads, rose-gold color is a major YES. Whether you go subtle with some lowlights that add a rosy shimmer, or go all over for a head-turning do, you are sure to feel the spice of the season every time you glance at your reflection. For the brunettes, monochromatic browns and rich cocoa colors demonstrate that deep hues don’t require highlights to have high shine and definition. Dark chocolate and rich ranges of browns with raspberry, blueberry, or blackberry tones are perfect! Whether you are a blonde babe, a fiery red head, or a beautiful brunette, choose a haircut that complements your style. The hottest looks include bombshell lengths, long bobs (lobs), and pixie cuts. Fall is a perfect time to change your look and have some fun!

Last, but not least, some of our favorites for this year - the messy top knot, braids, and twists are going to ride out 2014 so keep them rotating in your style regimen. You should be a pro by 2015!

Your best accessory is your hairstyle. Even if you only have a few minutes, take the time to do your hair. It can make all the difference between a bad hair day and your best hair day! One suggestion is the quintessential cool-girl look. Go with a soft chignon by parting your hair down the center from crown to nape, and pulling it back into two ponytails. Loosely twist and roll each one upward. Tuck in the ends and secure each roll with a bobby pin. Let loose strands fall, and spray with

28 | North County Woman • FALL 2014

For a look that is simply beautiful go with a side part. You can’t go wrong with a side part and hair that is upswept, pulled back low, loose, wavy, or straight. A twist on the ultimate go-to hairstyle, the ponytail, is also seeing a major comeback! Whether it be adorned with lush fabric, kept sophisticated or polished, or sectioned, multi-layer creations are being seen all over.

Fall makeup features hints of metallic and splashes of electric hues paired with nothing but radiant skin. A soft, flawless complexion and fresh cheeks go perfectly with the brilliant looks designed for the eyes. Bright shimmer on the inner corners, splashes of glitter, ultra-bright to stark flashes of liner, and full eye effects are big. A heavy, smoky eye or even a softer version of this and a winged affect are also right on trend. Doll-like spider lashes just add to the season’s eccentric look for the eyes. The key to creating this bold look for the eye is in the liner. Be sure to line the bottom of the eye to create definition. It’s also the season to push the limits with color! Take your pick and shine on. A good place to start is with Aveda's Romantic Grandeur Fall/ Winter makeup line that is full of golds, rusts, and purples. Although these colors are prominent in the line’s color scheme, don't overlook adding an electric teal for a fun pop of color on the eye. Go for it, embrace the trends and find yourself fresh faced and fierce! Remember, fall is a time to reflect on the goodness you can do for yourself and the world around you. Nurture yourself by getting a new look, trying a new workout, taking a walk in nature, or just a night out on the town. I promise it is sure to give you a glow that is fueled by health and happiness, and what is more beautiful than that?

FALL 2014 IS A SEASON FULL OF EASY-TOWEAR FASHIONS YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE! The effortlessly- chic styles seen on the runways this season will carry you seamlessly from work to date night and everything in-between. Your fall fashion transformation should be relatively easy this year, as the pretty pastels you loved in spring will carry flawlessly into fall. Pastels popped up on the runways of Chloe, Carven, and Gucci. Shed a little light on this trend by mixing these lovely hues with a hint of Western wear, another huge trend for fall. From the boots, to the hats, to the fringe, who knew ranching could be so chic? You’ll notice that designers now, more than ever, are beginning to center their collections around texture and comfort. Fall 2014 is all about wearability. Knitwear is a major staple for fall fashion year after year, but for this particular season no knit is too big or too intricate. Time to upgrade you favorite fall sweater for a super-sized knit creation. For the perfect day look, try pairing your new luxe cardi with a pair of slouchy cropped boyfriend jeans, booties, and a cozy plaid button-up. Plaid, for fall, how original right? This cool classic isn’t going anywhere; it’s a season staple! Comfort and style don’t always seem to go together, but isn’t it fabulous when they do? Fall’s fashion trends display the best of both worlds this season. A major must-have garment is the sleekly chic track pant. Now these awesomely comfortable slacks aren’t strictly sported at the gym but on the runways as well! Transform this sporty style to date night attire by pairing them with a sharp leather jacket, a sexy peep-toe bootie, and pop of leopard print for the ultimate look. There you have it! Fall fashion is all about the mix up, but above all comfort is key this year. Be comfortable in fashion and the rest will follow.

ď Ź Decor | MEDITERRANEAN SPLENDOR

Mediterranean

Splendor By Kerry Wright Design by Kim Smart Photographs by Denise Vakili

WHEN KIM SMART OF SMART INTERIORS HELPED DESIGN THE FAMILY ROOM, SITTING AREA, AND KITCHEN OF THIS MEDITERRANEAN-STYLE HOME, SHE WANTED THE OVERALL FEEL TO REFERENCE SPANISH MEDITERRANEAN. However, she was going for a fresher, less ornate look than the traditional Mediterranean-style home. To achieve this look, Kim used the alder-wood trim, doors, and travertine floors for inspiration. She then went with clean lines for the couch and TV built-in to give the room a more modern, transitional feel. Kim stuck to a terracotta, sage, gold, and chocolate color scheme to complement the home without making it feel dark and heavy. For the sitting area, two oversized, curvy chairs along with a carved-trunk end table flank the fireplace. A small, glass end table has been repurposed and serves as the perfect-sized coffee table. The area provides a nice little nook for reading or after-dinner drinks. The kitchen has beautiful, olive adobe granite countertops and matching backsplash. The look and colors of the kitchen scream Mediterranean! The all-Viking appliances add to the beauty of the room. The large windows in the eat-in area keep the kitchen looking bright and fresh, despite the darker colors of the granite and cupboards. The window treatments were kept simple, so as not to compete with the vast view from each room. The effortless blend of color and lines give this home a finished, luxurious look but with Mediterranean ease. A great place to formally dine and then unwind. Time to update your casa? Incorporate some of the ideas above and create your own fresh Mediterranean sanctuary.

Women in Business | DITCH THE BUSINESS PLAN 

Building a Million-Dollar Business?

Ditch the Plan! BY EVE GUMPEL OF GOOD WRITING MATTERS & CWI

Conventional wisdom says you need to prepare a business plan when you start a business. Especially if you expect to reach the level of a million-dollar business. Not so, say three women who’ve created million-dollar-plus empires for themselves.

Lisa Walker

The three: Lisa Walker, now a business coach for ActionCoach; Laurie Resnick of Associated Group; and Suzanne DeRossett of Empire Building Services. The trio were panelists at a recent monthly breakfast forum produced by Connected Women of Influence. “I don’t do anything like anyone else,” says Laurie, who has never taken a class on design. And though she doesn’t have a business plan per se, “I do have a plan in my head,” she says. Walker, notes however, that even if they didn’t have business plans, Laurie and Suzanne both had something every good business owner has: a target customer. “They knew their customer, and they developed the things those customers wanted,” Walker says. Beyond that, both women have goals for their business. “Goals are way more important than a business plan,” Walker says. In fact, she explains, if you articulate and write down a goal, a part of your brain called the reticular activating system will draw your attention to things that will help you reach your goal. Walker’s secret to success: “Have goals, know your strengths and what they are – but have the flexibility to shift when you need to.” She also advises every business owner to have a mentor, to offer some perspective on the owner’s blind spots.

Laurie Resnick

Flexibility is key, agrees Laurie. “When you reach $10 million, the same employees you had at $5 million don’t work for you anymore. You need to find more skilled talent.” And when you reach that milestone, it becomes a challenge to communicate your vision, mission and values to everyone in the organization. She boils hers down to this: “We under promise and over deliver.”

Before she became a business coach, Lisa Walker founded a million-dollar imaging business with clients including giants such as Google, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. She says the biggest challenge for a small business is “stepping off the cliff – owning the limitations we put on ourselves and being willing to take risks and be passionate about what we’re doing.” Associated Group is one of Southern California’s largest landscape, interior plantscape and seasonal display contractors. Laurie began her company in 1980, then merged with two other companies in 1986, bringing the company past the coveted $1 million level. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Associated Group has since added a fourth partner – and eliminated one of the originals. Today, Associated Group is a $15 million company with 150 employees.

Suzanne DeRossett

wasn’t thinking about making $1 million when she started Empire Building Services as a janitorial services company in 1982. Her sights were set at something like $100,000. Today, like Associated Group, Empire Building Services is a $15 million company that employs 150 people and has added maintenance, construction and construction cleanup to its array of services. The additional services represent an evolution that took Suzanne out of her comfort zone. Through the years, she says, customers have asked, “Can you do this other thing for me, too?” She used to say no. But in 2003, at the urging of her son — who is now her business partner — she learned to stop saying no. “As you age, different priorities become important. Once you’re over 50, you say, ‘nothing’s killed me yet.’ ” All three agree that challenges constantly appear. “Something is always happening. You have to have a way to pick yourself up – a community you can reach out to,” Walker advises. Laurie says she’s always adapted to what the market wanted. “We hire people who are not so structured, so we can do anything you ask,” Laurie says. She adds, “We don’t ask people to do anything we haven’t done ourselves. I stay up all night with them.” Walker wholeheartedly agrees: “Say yes first, and figure out how to do it afterward,” she says.

 Life | WORDS OF LIZDOM

Need More Biz? The Top 10 Goof-Proof Strategies for Keeping A Full Pipeline BY LIZ GOODGOLD

VIRTUALLY ALL BUSINESS OWNERS TELL ME THAT DOING THE BUSINESS IS EASY; GETTING THE BUSINESS IS HARD!

6

DON’T IGNORE PAST CLIENTS - It’s easier to get more business from a current or past client than to bring a new customer into the fold. Develop strong relationships that allow you to stay connected even if you aren’t currently doing business together.

7

ASK FOR TESTIMONIALS - Testimonials work like honey in attracting new clients. Don’t forget to ask for testimonials when your client is happiest.

8

REWARD REFERRALS – Of course clients don’t refer you for the small gifts you send, but that doesn’t mean you should stop sending them.

9

DEVELOP A NETWORK OF AFFILIATES – Whether it’s formal or informal, you need a network of raving fans.

So, this article is dedicated to the roughly 89,000 female entrepreneurs in San Diego who need just a little help in getting more clients, more customers, and more revenue.

1

MAKE TIME FOR MARKETING – Regardless of how much business you have now, it will evaporate within six months if you stop working on getting new business. Don’t get deceived by inhaling your own fumes and believing that your phone will keep ringing indefinitely.

2

CREATE A BIZ CARD THAT WORKS – Ugh! If I get one more biz card without an email, I am going to scream! Sending me to your website under the antiquated auspices that it will give me more information about you is just plain wrong. Instead, it will just make me throw away your card and any chance of a referral! Give me your contact info, your Twitter handle, your specialty, and how I can directly connect with you.

3

“F” IS FOR FOLLOW UP – Allowing biz cards to clutter your desk are a missed opportunity to help, connect, refer, or develop a business relationship. Instead, you need a systematic answer to how, when, and what you’ll send folks to stay top of mind.

4

MAKE COFFEE MEETINGS YOUR FRIEND – I eschew lunch meetings in favor of a morning or afternoon cup of Joe. It’s easier, faster, and even cheaper!

5

WRITE A REFERRAL PARAGRAPH – Why let me write about you? Instead, write and keep handy a referral paragraph that you can cut and paste as needed to send to strategic partners. You can then use this paragraph in emails and even via LinkedIn when you are looking for introductions.

34 | North County Woman • FALL 2014

10

SEND HANDWRITTEN NOTES - Just like your mom taught you, handwritten notes are essential for thanks yous, birthdays, and other essentials that make people feel good.

Life | THE CLARITY CORNER 

The Power of NO BY CHARLIE MARTIN, THE CLARITY COACH

I HAVE FOUND IN WORKING WITH MANY OF MY FEMALE CLIENTS THAT THEY HAVE A HARD TIME SAYING NO. The other side of that coin is that every time any of us says yes to something, we say no to something else. There is nothing wrong with saying yes to many things as long as we have sorted out our priorities. It’s important to clarify that we are saying yes to the things most important to us, therefore automatically saying no to the less important things. I believe we all have some challenges when it comes to saying no, because we all want to be liked and saying no doesn’t feel very good. However, there seems to be more internal pressure to say yes by women than by men. I have had this conversation frequently with clients and have also done a good bit of research on it; however, this is not the place for a discussion on research.

and having more degrees and education than men, will be in charge. Men will be responsible for 70% of cosmetics sales and plastic surgery procedures worldwide. Why? Men will be vying for women’s attention, obsessed with being attractive to females and snagging well-off ladies who can take care of them. What does the above have to do with saying yes or no? I believe that with increasing opportunities for women expanding (I’m not sure about having kids at age 120), it will become much more important for them to start to understand why they are saying yes to so many things and start saying no when it is not in their best interest. A yes to something could be a quick no to something incredible! Make a list of all the things you say yes to that may cause you to say no to things that are much more important in these aspects of your life:

As you are reading this brief article, just ask yourself the question, “How often am I saying yes and what am I saying no to at the same time and why?”

• Your health

There was a great 23-page section in the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, 7/08/14 called “WSJ 125.” It was dedicated to making predictions about what the future might look like in a variety of areas. There was one small section on page 4 titled “Take Two Pills and You’ll Look Better in the Morning.” Following is a brief synopsis of what the article said: Women’s empowerment will be an irrelevant concept because of the balance of power between the sexes will have shifted dramatically. Women, in control of when they can have children (up to age 120),

• Your career

• Your relationships (I know you think this is an area where the answer yes is required but just think about it) • Your financial success • Your overall personal happiness • Your continued growth and evolution as a person If you can get clarity about who you are, where you are headed, and why you are headed there, it will help you define your priorities and better determine whether yes or a few more no’s will serve you better.

 Finance | FIND FINANCIAL FREEDOM

Why and How I Stepped Off the Roller Coaster and Found Financial Freedom BY MARA HOOVER

THIS PAST SUMMER WAS FULL OF CHANGE FOR ME. SOME OF IT WAS WELCOMED AND SOME WAS NOT. I committed to myself that I would accept this change with grace (as much as possible). Ha-ha! Sometimes I did and sometimes I didn’t. Throughout the “journey,” a nice name for the wild ride we call life, I incorporated one of my favorite things to do - look for signs. Signs that might indicate something new is coming, something better, a reason or purpose as to why I’m riding this rollercoaster.

Experiencing devastating financial loss set me on a new path to owning my financial power. It forced me to research other options, and through the research, I discovered exciting investment opportunities that didn’t require me to ride the roller coaster any longer. I’ve been able to share these options with other women through Wine, Women & Wealth programs and FinancialPowerU Workshops. Because of the painful journey I experienced, I have developed an incredible career that I love!

On a recent trip to visit my sister and her family in Rochester, NY, I was highly encouraged by a fortune cookie, that’s right…a fortune cookie! It said, “You will soon emerge victorious from the maze you’ve been traveling in.” What encourages YOU when you’re on of life’s wild rides? I am surprised by how many women I have encountered recently that are experiencing some sort of similar journey in their lives. I feel blessed to meet them, encourage and support them and at the same time have them encourage me. For some, the journey may be a change in marital status, an empty nest, a new addition to the family (sometimes unexpected), a change at work, the loss of a parent, or illness of a dear friend. The journey brings change and with it many questions.

My question to you, “Are you ready to own your financial power?” Listed below are three practical tips to owning your financial power. I won’t say it’s easy, but I will tell you that it’s worth it.

As a financial professional, the most frequently asked question by women is, “How do I cope with this change financially?” Whether it’s managing financial and investment decisions after a divorce, paying for college (sometimes for multiple children at once), realizing that it’s time to start saving for college, wondering if retirement is a realistic dream, wondering if they even want to retire, managing unexpected expenses due to aging parents, or beyond. There are so many questions! The truth of the matter is that 90% of women will have sole control of their money at some point in their lives, and yet 75% of women say they don’t feel prepared for that responsibility. This impending reality is often accompanied by a high level of fear, and the best way to eliminate fear is with knowledge. Knowledge that brings with it confidence, peace, and a realization that you are going to emerge victorious from the journey you’ve been traveling. It’s an experience I call “owning your financial power!” The next question…if women are going to step into their financial power where can they go to get answers? More importantly, where can they go to get the education, information and confidence they need to own their financial power and make GREAT decisions with their money? The reality is that most women they did not receive the education from their parents or while attending college. Most of them have learned the lessons through experience, which is often the most painful way to learn. As a young girl I was blessed to have parents that spent time educating me about money. At 16 I started saving in my 401k, at 23 I’d saved $80,000, and by 23 I’d lost $40,000 in the stock market crash! Even with the education I was blessed to receive from my parents, I still learned the hard way: through experience. An experience that I would gladly re-live! Why? Because it was the first time I made a decision to own my financial power. As a young woman my advisor told me, “Mara, you are young and you can afford the risk.” With that in mind and with his help, I made a number of risky investments that failed and lost tens of thousands of dollars. Through that experience, I learned that even though I am young and might be able to “afford” the risk, I certainly didn’t like it! Since then, I’ve stepped into owning my financial power and making investment decisions that better align with my beliefs. I don’t like the stock market roller coaster, so I’ve found other options that I prefer. I’ve made choices that work for me, and I’m no longer taking that ride.

1

STEP ONE: Identify what you’ve been told, taught, or pressured into in your financial life that just isn’t working for you. Maybe it’s a negative belief you learned from your parents, something that an ex-spouse once said, a fear you’ve been holding on to for years, or a comment from someone in the financial industry that was confusing or belittling. Whatever was said, whoever said it, and for whatever reason, it’s time to let it go, throw it out, and replace it with something new.

2

STEP TWO: Simply commit! Commit to yourself that you are ready to step up, get the knowledge you need, and find the support required to own your financial power. There are great people in the financial industry, including myself, who would love to support and encourage you on your pursuit of financial knowledge. Choose someone who aligns with your new direction and is willing to help you find and access the resources you need. For ongoing education consider joining a women’s investment group, or a women’s community like Wine, Women & Wealth. For more in depth training, attend an educational workshop like FemmePowerU Live! or FinancialPowerU Live!

3

STEP THREE: Take action. Once you have the knowledge and support you need to make a great decision with your money, it’s time to take action. Confidently make a change, take action, and own your financial power. You deserve it!

My wish for you is that you will experience the freedom that comes with owning your financial power. I hope that you will fully embrace it, and even when you feel like you are in the middle of the journey, you will know that you are about to emerge victorious!
