Letter from the Editor Whether you’re a slave to fashion or a wannabe fashionista this issue will appeal to you. Our featured woman is local fashion designer Camille Wood and she gives us insight into the life of a fashion designer. She debuted her new Tribal collection at the Kenneth Barlis Fashion Show at the end of August and it was amazing!! Camille’s designs are not only appropriate for the 20-year old, but for those of us who are more “mature”! She wowed the crowd at the Barlis show and when you read the interview we did with her you’ll know why. She is a woman who is determined, talented and driven. She will inspire you to follow your dream! Our next fashion stop was Fashion Week San Diego. The hype that surrounds this event is justified! Two of the highlights for me included Thursday night’s show, which was capped off by competing designers from an upcoming fashion TV show produced by singing sensation Rhianna. My next favorite was Friday night’s runway show, which included adoptable pets from local nonprofit Rancho Coastal Humane Society walking the runway. These adorable pets stole the show! The week included something for everyone, and if you have the opportunity to attend next year you should. It’s a unique experience.

And speaking of women’s health...October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Did you know that by carefully examining aspects of temperature and blood vessel activity of the breasts in thermal images, signs of cancer or pre-cancerous cell growth may be detected within the first year of development? I kicked off my summer with a thermography scan from Silk Thermal Imaging and discovered that my body is “hot” in many areas; unfortunately, in my case, the definition of hot does not mean a perfect body! Although the scan revealed that my breast tissue is healthy (whew!), it picked up various issues I have going on internally that an average x-ray would not detect until they manifested into bigger problems with symptoms. Can you say preventative health? I cannot encourage you enough to take the time and make an investment in your health by scheduling your scan today. Check out the article on page 27 to learn more about this potentially lifesaving tool. And keep up with your self-exams!

Are You Seeing Spots? BY AMERICA DASCHLE

Director of RejeuvinĂŠ MedSpa if you sunbathed with baby oil and mirrored sun reflectors as a teenager, you are probably regretting it right now! It takes 10-15 years for sun damage to come to the surface, which explains why you are now starting to see spots. What can you do about those ugly, annoying brown spots? Actually, there are many different options available, depending on your budget and your expectations. Below, I describe my three favorites. You can mix and match these treatments based upon your needs. I recommend having a personalized consultation to determine the best approach for you. First is an at-home pharmaceutical skincare system, Obagi NuDerm, which is perfect for prepping the skin, as well as maintaining results from the more aggressive 4 | North County Woman Fall 2013

treatments described below. Obagi was originally created for Asian and Hispanic skin because Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments are not recommended for those specific skin types. Obagi uses hydroquinone products along with Retin-A. Hydroquinone is a skin lightener. I do not use the word bleacher because it does not actually bleach the skin; it lightens or evens out the brown pigment on the skin. In my opinion, you should not use hydroquinone product for an extended length of time. My general recommendation is use a hydroquinone and Retin-A for six months. I start using mine in November, stop using it in May, and use different skincare in the summer. You can expect to pay around $300 for a starter system including Retin-A. A second option is The Perfect Peel or Vi-Peel which are chemical peels that use multiple acids to target many different skin conditions such as brown spots, acne, scarring, fine lines, and melasma. The Perfect Peel is not painful during application. The first and second day after applying the peel your skin feels super tight almost like you are wearing an egg-white home mask. On day three your skin will start to slough around the nostrils, chin crease, and sometimes the temples. Day four through seven your skin peels revealing a brighter,

more even skin tone! The Perfect Peel can range in price from $200 up to $400 depending on the treatment facility. The third option, the deepest and the most long-term treatment available, is an IPL treatment otherwise known as a photo facial. This is a non-invasive treatment that targets brown spots including sun and age spots and improves skin tone. At Rejeuviné MedSpa, we recommend a series of five IPL treatments with 2-4 weeks between treatments. An IPL is like a flashlight that penetrates the bottom depths of your skin and pulls the brown pigment up to the surface. Each IPL treatment will continue removing those sun spots or age spots, some of which you have not seen because they are lurking below the surface of your skin. If you were one of those teenagers who sunbathed out in the sun with their baby oil, you have lots of brown spots just waiting to surface!

Real People Real Solutions Botox/Dysport | Dermal Fillers Laser Treatments | Medical Facials Dr. Michael J. Brucker Board Certied Plastic Surgeon

There is no downtime with an IPL treatment, although there can be some “peppering”, which is easily covered with make-up. The only downside with an IPL treatment is that you may become addicted and start treating other areas of the body such as your chest, hands, and arms! Once finished with your original five treatments, you will have to have an IPL treatment one to four times a year, depending on your sun exposure, to maintain your investment. I enjoy the sun, although I wear my sunscreen every day, and because I have small children, being outside in the summer is a given. In the fall, I do a mini-series of three IPL treatments on my face, neck and chest to “clean up” the damage I did over the summer. After my treatments, I begin my hydroquinone and Retin-A regimen. There are so many different IPL machines and pricing is extremely varied, so you will just have to call and ask. At Rejeuviné we charge $275 for a full face IPL treatment. Lastly, another brown spot that frequently gets ignored and is often treated incorrectly is melasma. Generally, hormones are responsible for the resurgence of melasma. Two examples of this type of melasma are the pregnancy mask and the “brown mustache” from the use of birth control. These darkened areas may subside when the hormones settle down, but you can never actually get rid of melasma. Sunscreen is important for everyone to wear, but it is especially important for those who struggle with melasma, as it is worsened by sunlight. It surprises me when I hear about the number of technicians who treat melasma with an IPL treatment. Although it will improve temporarily, over time the melasma will come back with a vengeance. Recently, I met with a doctor from Japan who specializes in melasma. She shared some of her tricks of the trade, and, as a result Rejeuviné developed a strict protocol for melasma, utilizing hydroquinone, microdermabrasion, and a laser treatment called Laser Genesis. Laser Genesis is a laser originally developed for collagen remodeling and improving skin texture. The focused heat tricks the collagen into thinking it is getting a third degree burn (it really isn’t), so the collagen quickly creates more collagen to heal the skin. Laser Genesis is also very successful for treating acne because the heat kills the bacteria. Where do I start? I know this is a lot of information and it can be confusing and overwhelming, which is why it is so important to consult with a professional who can help determine your plan of action, based on your needs and expectations. Consultations are complimentary at Rejeuviné, and we would love to help educate you and start you on the road to beautiful skin.

Holiday Tipping by Andie Beyer Green

Holly’s Girlfriend

“Doorman—a genius who can open the door of your car with one hand, help you in with the other, and still have one left for the tip.”

~Dorothy Kilgallen

(American journalist and game show panelist)

Figuring out holiday tips can be tricky. From the dog walker to the nanny, the manicurist to the in-home nurse, there can be a number of people to consider tipping during the holiday season. With common sense as a guide, consider your budget and relationship with service provider. Following are general guidelines:

For those who work with you daily like nannies, au pairs, cooks or butlers — a week of pay, plus a personal gift from the children for nannies and au pairs. House cleaners, hair stylists, manicurists, massage therapists, dog walkers, personal trainers and assistants, and very regular babysitters fall into a subset of the personal service category — up to the equivalent of one visit. Doormen can make your life much easier. Based on the level of service and location (bigger cities = bigger tips) — $20-$100. Gardener and pool cleaner — the equivalent of one visit or a $10-$20 tip per helper.

Teachers, tutors, instructors and coaches — a gift card or gift. Garbage/recycling collectors and newspaper carriers — a smaller tip (e.g., $10$20 per person) for each person. Mail and package carriers and nursing care facility and in-home providers — a small gift or gift basket that can be shared is appreciated. The U.S. Postal Service and as well as some other providers do not allow cash or gift card tips. Consider the length and level of service. For example, if you are a flower-show level gardener who works closely with your gardening team, you tip much more generously.

Cash Is King When Cuba Gooding, Jr.’s character burst out “Show me the money!” in Jerry Maguire (1996), he was speaking for most people. Thoughtful gifts are great, but cash is king. Most of us have no idea how others manage their money. Many use tips to pay for holiday gifts, bills or rent. When cash is not appropriate, consider a credit-card gift card or store gift card. You might be surprised to find how much people tip. Regardless of others’ tipping patterns, it’s a personal choice based on common sense, budget, relationship and length of service.

“Number one, cash is king… number two, communicate… number three, buy or bury the competition.” ~ Jack Welch (former chairman and chief

executive officer of General Electric)

Saving You From the Ordinary

A

BY KERRY WRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY DENISE VAKILI

ranch...the unforgiving sun...and a lack of cute, stylish hats to choose from is what initially jump started Camille Wood’s career in design! Not the traditional start of a fashion designer’s career, but then there is nothing traditional about Camille! In fact, the motto for her line of fashion is “Saving you from the ordinary!” Camille’s designs are everything but ordinary and much like Camille herself—exuberant and enthralling. Sitting down with Camille for this interview was like having a refreshing, bubbling glass of good champagne! She is vivacious, well spoken, funny and possesses a never-give-up attitude. What she has accomplished in her life and where she wants to go in the future is very toast worthy! As you’ll discover in this interview, she’s not letting up any time soon! NCW: How old were you when you had that first fashion “experience” - that moment when you knew fashion would be a part of your future? CW: Actually, I never had that moment. I grew up with a mother who was a Vogue model in the 40s, so I certainly learned about fashion and etiquette at a young age, but my desire was to be a model. A marriage and a divorce derailed me a bit, but I did eventually give modeling a shot. I went to John Casablanca’s modeling agency and I knew my calling was not going to be a runway model when they asked me to stand up and I said, “I am standing.” However, they did think I had the perfect face for TV. In their words, “Camille you have a face and a smile that could sell a box of Tide to anyone.” I did some photo shoots and some TV work and got it all out of my system. After the modeling stint, I still didn’t break into fashion. I explored numerous other occupations such as painting. My mother was an artist and she taught me how to paint. I opened a studio in Scottsdale, Arizona and spent many years doing portraits. I worked on a morning radio show as “Suzy Snicklefritz - the dumb blonde.” I worked briefly for and met President Reagan. I drove the press in President Bush’s motorcade in San Diego, and I drove limousines. I’ve had an occupational past as diverse as my designs! As for fashion, I had always loved fashion in the sense that I loved putting outfits together etc. In fact, my mother always told me that no matter where I went to always look my best because you don’t know who you might see. I

follow that advice to this day! I get ready even if I’m just going to Circle K! The actual designing began about two years ago. I was managing a 300-acre ranch, and I could not find funky, cool, baseball caps with bling anywhere so I started designing my own. Soon people were asking me where I had gotten my hat. It was then that I truly started to design. A businessman I had once worked for said, “One of the keys to success is finding a need and meeting it.” I found a need for cute hats and met that need by making my own! Soon I started designing other headwear and swimwear and then on to dresses. I am a firm believer in the fact that you are never too old to start anything. I also don’t take no for an answer! It’s this perseverance that continually propels me forward. Don’t give up and follow your dreams! NCW: Describe your designs to our readers. CW: I don’t want to do the norm. There is plenty of normal stuff out there. I want to turn heads with my designs. I would describe my designs as bold, adventurous, beautiful and classy with a little sex appeal. I want women who wear my designs to feel beautiful, classy, and sexy but not over the top so that they’re uncomfortable. I want to do gorgeous things without sacrificing beauty and style. At the Kenneth Barlis show, I showcased my designs by utilizing women of various ages to model. I think it’s important for women out there to know that my designs not only look awesome on women in their 20s, but on women of all ages. I want the more mature woman to identify with my line and realize North County Woman Fall 2013 | 9

that she, too, can look as good in one of my pieces as a 20 year old. Again, it’s about finding a need and meeting it. I hear so many women over 40 say they don’t know where to shop because of the limited selection of unique clothing for women their age. I’m excited about filling that void by creating options for women over 40. Maybe you don’t like your aging neck or your flabby arms, but you love your shoulders. Many of my designs focus on areas such as the back and shoulders that always look lovely and hide the areas of a woman’s body that don’t always stand up to the test of time. NCW: What motivates you to keep designing? CW: I would have to say the thrill of creating a new design. Fashion to me is an outward expression of the inner person. When I design something I’m expressing my inner person and I find that very, very self gratifying and satisfying. My most satisfying moment is when someone puts on one of my designs and says, “Wow, I look beautiful!” I like to make people feel good about themselves. NCW: What is your goal/dream for your fashion line? CW: My dream is to have Camille Wood boutiques in numerous major cities across the country. I am also concentrating on placing my clothing, hats and head pieces in Europe. London needs my hats! And I look forward one day to seeing my designs on the runway in New York and Paris. I’m reaching for the stars! Why not? NCW: Any advice you’d like to offer budding fashionistas out there? CW: Stay true to yourself. Don’t be swayed by what other people tell you and don’t quit....don’t stop....don’t give up until it’s a reality and then still don’t stop! Don’t doubt yourself and attempt to be like everyone else. It’s good to be different. NCW: What would you like most for our readers to walk away with from this interview? CW: I want women to walk away from this feeling encouraged and excited: encouraged that dreams really do come true if you work hard and don’t give up, and excited about my new line of clothing designed to give them a fresh, new, adventurous, sexy look without compromising style and beauty. NCW: It was such a pleasure meeting and interviewing Camille. Not only is she unbelievably talented, she’s kind and very, very inspirational. “Can’t” does not exist in Camille’s vocabulary! An additional highlight for me was being able to see her work at her studio. If you are looking for a piece no one else has Camille is your go-to-girl! Her hats are out of this world as are her swimsuits and dresses. I can guarantee that if you wear Camille’s designs you will certainly be “saving yourself from the ordinary!”

Train Drummer

Scott Underwood

Music, Wine & the Women that Influenced Him by denise vakili

Twenty-six years ago a young teenager stared with starry eyes at the empty stage at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs, New York, dreaming of where his love for music and drum skills would take him. The boy’s mother, Harriett Underwood, always believed that one day his persistence would pay off, and she was right. Now 42, Train drummer and keyboard player Scott Underwood, who through a lot of hard work and grinding through the ups and downs of the music business, has become both nationally and internationally acclaimed, and with the band’s launch of its sixth album, California 37, has proven that Train has arrived and isn’t leaving any time soon. We caught up with Underwood in an interview between shows and got to the heart of Train’s San Francisco roots, their bumpy musical ride, and the women that influenced them along the way. And though it hasn’t been easy, Underwood explains how each played a significant role in the band’s rise to the top of the music charts. Underwood’s mother was one of his biggest supporters and most positive influences. “We used to always take walks together,” Underwood said. “We were very close and still are, and we would go out there and walk and we were just sitting looking at it (SPAC). And I was already a musician and I was really ambitious at a young age musically, and so she said, ‘someday you’ll be up on that stage.’ And when it happened, we were both pretty emotional about it. It was just too cool for me. That’s my hometown. I graduated on that stage. It’s almost hard to believe.” In the house where he grew up, music was a way of life for Underwood. “(My mom) was very into music. Her whole family is musical and talented. She’s a great singer and she loves dancing, so when I would play my drums downstairs, instead of being like we were driving her crazy, she would come down and dance and it was fun. But she always encouraged me. She always really believed in me, so I was really lucky for that.” While Train has had positive influences from so many, the negative influences had their way with the band as well, including front man Pat Monahan’s divorce from his first wife, Ginean Rapp. “They were unhappy, just kind of the classic miserable couple,” Underwood confessed.

“They were hard to be around; they just didn’t get along…and a lot of his songs were pretty bummed out songs… And at that time I think we wrote our worst record. Pat had a really, really dark period of time. But then he decided to move on from that and felt really empowered and got out of that relationship, and it was really tough for him. ” After meeting his current wife, Amber Peterson, things turned around for Pat and the entire band as well. “He’s like this solid, evolved man now, and all of his songs are like really happy love songs, and it’s really -- our greatest period of success is now. When we won a Grammy for ‘Hey Soul Sister,’ it was funny; we were doing interviews, and (guitarist) Jimmy and I were thanking Amber,” Underwood laughed. She’s (Pat’s) source of inspiration now and everything’s different. What is that statement? Behind every great man is a great woman. That’s what we’ve got.” As for award shows, the Grammys haven’t been so kind to Train since “Hey Soul Sister,” which forced the band to do a little soul searching. They realized that rather than trying to write awardwinning songs, it was important to get back to their San Francisco roots, really appreciate where they came from, and recognize the fans whom have supported them from the beginning. Now, as happy and successful as they’ve ever been, Train is back to playing purely what they enjoy with whimsical beats and no boundaries. At the time the band launched their fifth album, Save Me, San Francisco, they decided to bring a little piece of San Francisco with them on tour to share with fans around the globe. And so began the Save Me San Francisco Wine and Chocolate companies. “San Francisco is famous for its wine… so we were like, let’s make a bottle of wine and start

selling it, and we decided to not just have it be like a gimmick,” Underwood said. “We wanted to actually make really good wine, and so we went through a winery called Concannon, and they make amazing wine.” Now with five varietals, each named for one of the band’s song titles, the award-winning wine is available at shows, in select grocery stores nationwide, and on the band’s website. A portion of the proceeds from wine sales benefits Family House, Inc., a San Francisco charity that Train has supported for many years. In addition to the band’s wine venture, they have also partnered with Ghirardelli and have produced their own namesake chocolate with three types to choose from: 72% Cacao, Dark Cabernet and Sea Salt Almond. Finishing a busy tour this past summer, “no rest for the weary,” is an understatement for Train. Their “Mermaids From Alcatraz” tour totaled 25 shows throughout the U.S. and Canada, and wrapped up in August. And if that wasn’t enough, fans can join the band February 14th through 18th, 2014, on their first-ever Grand Cayman cruise, “Sail Across the Sun: A Music, Food and Wine Festival at Sea,” aboard the Norwegian Pearl. For more information on Train, show dates, the wine, the chocolate, and the fan cruise, visit www.trainonline.com. North County Woman Fall 2013 | 13

Fashion Week San Diego writing and photography by denise vakili

Denise Vakili Photography Monday, September 30, 2013 through Sunday, October 6, 2013 marked the five-day production of the third annual Fashion Week San Diego 2013. While San Diego is still very much an emerging city in the eyes of the fashion world, its Fashion Week festivities strive to prove that San Diego is indeed the heart of some notable design talent. “My team and I are very pleased to have accomplished a seamless production of Fashion Week this year, said Amie Wilde, assistant director of Fashion Week San Diego. “This was very important in order to help create change--changing how San Diegans & the world view fashion in this city.” The event, now bigger than ever, began with two days of private sponsor and designer events on Monday and Tuesday. At Wednesday’s event, The Art & Beauty Behind Fashion, attendees took in the perspective of fashion industry experts and panelists Jan Nordstrom Arnold of CND Nails, Claudio Lazo of Wella, Kevin James Bennett of MUD and Marylle Koken of Sebastian International. In addition, ticket holders participated in a local art showcase as well as a silent auction. The long-awaited runway show competition began on Thursday with designers C Venti, CG by Cynthia, Collections of Kathryn Elizabeth, Isabel Vianey, Laced with B, Mahogany Blues and Second Star Designs showing their never-seen-before collections. Wrapping up the night was a collaborative show which featured collections from competing designers Andre Soriano, Cecilia Aragon, and Dexter Simmons of the hit television show “Designed to Rock” hosted by Rihanna. Friday evening offered perhaps the most unique of fashion shows which featured San Diego’s most posh pets from Rancho Coastal Humane Society as well as modern pet fashion pieces. On the human side, featured designers included Diestra, Dos Caras Swimwear, Greenpacha, Keisha Audrey, ‘Love, Charles’, Maegan Stracy, Makeshift and RHCREATION. The final night of runway presentations held on Saturday proved that the show wasn’t over yet. With featured designers A’doreus, Ashley Raymond, Danh Ta, Maralonzo, NOIA, SYC Collection, VICTROLA, Wishnow, WM Couture and Yuwei Designs on the runway, the raw design talent was evident. As always, Sunday’s trunk show wrapped up the week-long fashion celebration offering attendees the opportunity to see the designers’ collections on display and actually shop from the designers featured in the runway shows. Also at the trunk show, this year’s winning designer, RHCREATION, was announced. 16 | North County Woman Fall 2013

Style / Makeover / Hair

Fall Makeover writing and photography by denise vakili

Denise Vakili Photography The responsibilities of a doctor are endless and demanding and often leave little time for extra things like primping, pampering and even a social life for that matter. Such was the case for endocrinologist Danielle Weiss, 33, of Carlsbad. When she wrote in requesting a makeover, here’s what she had to say: “I am single and still looking to meet the right person to continue to live an exceptional life with. I often spend two minutes or less doing my hair and makeup and wonder what potential I am missing out on that would help me be the best me possible!” We loved her story and put our professionals to work, giving her a new look that would suit her both in social scenarios and also in her professional environment while treating patients. The Hair: For Danielle’s hair, we consulted professional hair stylist and colorist Amberlee Piercy of Jayden Presleigh, The Salon and Spa in Carlsbad Village. Because Danielle’s profession limits her a bit with how edgy and current we could go with her hair look, Piercy had some excellent suggestions for working with what she already had: curls, and lots of them! “Her hair is gorgeous, and because she has those awesome tight curls, it’s nice to showcase the curl instead of fighting it,” said Piercy. “For her makeover, we shaped up her cut with just a trim because she really needs to be able to do her hair quickly, and keeping it long makes it much more manageable.” For Weiss’ photo shoot, Piercy did blow out some of the curl, but gave her a tousled look using a curling wand to go with the natural feel of the outfits she wore. The Makeup: To give Danielle a fresh, new makeup look we turned to professional makeup artist, Kandise Belsher of The Spa at Tri-City Wellness Center in Carlsbad. “Danielle has a very beautiful olive complexion that needed very little coverage,” Belsher said. “We used the Jane Iredale mineral makeup line to create a very simple summer look that highlighted Danielle’s key features, her beautiful skin and eyes, while giving her that California sun-kissed skin complexion we all strive for during the summer, without damaging her skin.” 20 | North County Woman Fall 2013

Belsher used all natural tones in brown, copper and gold with rusty coral on Danielle’s lips for a perfect combination that would be easy for her to apply on her own. In addition, she added false lashes to give her eyes more definition and make them really pop against the natural makeup tones. The Look: While Danielle admitted that the looks we chose for her were different than what she was used to, the stylists and everyone present during her fitting all agreed that they were smashing on her! We found Weiss’ outfits at Blues and Shoes in Carlsbad Village, where stylist Ali Terwilliger honed in on Danielle’s best assets. “I’ve always felt that you should choose one body part to show off in each outfit,” said Terwilliger. “Danielle has awesome legs, and with the dress, I really wanted to show them off! By choosing a dress with a higher neck line that covered her top section, her sexy legs become the focus in the outfit. Also, adding a belt with the dress accentuated her small waist. With an embroidered neckline and Danielle’s gorgeous locks, the only accessories needed were some bangles, and she was good to go!” We are thrilled with Danielle’s makeover results, and from the sound of it, Danielle is, too! “Who knew a few hours of pampering could be so transformational!” said Weiss. “From the awesome staff at Blues and Shoes to the ultra-relaxing and first-class hairstyling at Jayden Presleigh, The Salon & Spa, to the true artistry in makeup of Kandise at The Spa at Tri-City Wellness Center, I had so much fun getting to play dress up like a little girl and I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I learned that layering and accessorizing can take a simple outfit to new levels. I also learned how to adjust my level of curls and about the powerful impact of eye makeup. Thank you to everyone who gave their time, energy and passion into helping recreate my appearance!” And thank you, Danielle! We hope you love your new look! Holiday Hair & Makeup By brittany adamson

Quattra Via Founder/Master Beauty Artist ‘Tis the season that promises the most fabulous dinner parties and outings, mingling with friends, and spending cherished time with loved ones, all while we hope to look and feel our best. Don’t let the hustle and bustle of the holidays leave you feeling stressed about finding the perfect look and the time to do it. All you need is holiday hair and makeup looks that are easy to recreate and are sure to impress. In the spirit of the season, we celebrate glimmering accents and kissable lips, classic hairdos and irresistible twists! As we focus on the beauty we want to shine on the outside, we can’t forget about the beauty we find on the inside. So as we approach this special time, we must allow our Nurturing Spirit to flow through us and into others; it is a time of showing love and appreciation; a time of giving back. “Do all the good you can, in every place you can, in every way you can, while you still can” - John Wesley. Now, shall we get into our flawless holiday looks? You can pair and wear or choose one to try, but these looks are sure to give you sugar, spice and everything nice! Let’s start with hair. Want to leave it down? The always elegant body-wave curls evoke that perfect old Hollywood glamour that’s always in style. For a look that lasts into the late hours, set hair in hot rollers and touch up with a curling iron before gently brushing out into cascading waves. Sleek strands are just as in this year. Try changing up your texture for the holidays: all you straight-haired beauties go curly and curly-haired babes go straight. Also, don’t underestimate the power of a simple blow-out enhanced with major volume. Ask your stylist to tease the under section of your hair before smoothing out the top with a round brush for that added oomph. Keep in mind, long hair looks much more elegant when swept over one shoulder; to anchor to one side, twist back a section of hair behind your ear and secure with pins before misting with hairspray. I suggest the Aveda Control Force aerosol hairspray that allows brushable, firm hold. Go ahead, let your hair down this season! For a style that keeps those tresses up off the neck try a bun. A high bun makes a statement and is super dressy. You can choose to keep it polished or massage the bun a bit and pull a few light pieces out around the face to achieve the tousled-texture look. Mist on a shine spray to finish the look with a smooth polish. I love the Aveda Brilliant Spray-On-Shine. You can also try a pompadour-inspired style. To try it yourself, set your hair in large rollers to create oversized curls, then pile hair up into a twist, leaving the top section loose and wavy. Braids are always a fun, easy way to wear your hair for the holidays. For an effortlessly chic updo, try milkmaid braids. Begin by parting hair down the middle and weaving a low

braid on each side. Wrap each braid around the top of your head, using pins to secure. For a different look, pull the hair down towards the nape of the neck and try one of the following suggestions: wrap your hair around a wand curling iron to get tons of tendrils; twist back a few pieces and pin in place just above your nape; gather the rest into a low pony and set with a lightweight hairspray such as Aveda’s Air Control. Another popular look this season is the shiny, ultra-long ponytail. Use a root volumizer on hair to create lift prior to fastening in a ponytail. For a clean finish and seamless connection between real hair and any extension pieces, wrap a piece of hair around the ponytail holder and secure with a bobby pin. Ponytails are great because they can easily go from daytime casual to evening polished with just a few adjustments; for example, slick back sides a bit and leave a bit of volume up top. For an unexpected twist, add a side part to hair and place a low ponytail slightly off center. Next, braid hair loosely, tie the ends with an elastic, tuck the braid under, and pin. All of these looks can be embellished with a sparkly hair accessory just remember not to place an accessory on both sides as you want the look to be asymmetrical. For a simpler look opt for a headband that is silver, black, copper, or gold. Let your hair run the show this holiday season! Makeup for this season is captured beautifully in Avedas Autumn 2013 Heart Lands Collection which features lips like winter berries, and eyes lit by shimmering patinas.“Inspired by simpler times, Heart Lands features nomadic-inspired eyes and just-infrom-the-cold, naturally flushed cheeks,” says Janell Geason, Aveda Global Artistic Director, Makeup. “The textures are velvety and the colors rich but not too saturated. I wanted it to look more like a stain, as if the color was radiating from within.” It is filled with dark Jades, shades of purple, and highlights of soft orange and gold with berry reds, lending you the perfect pallet. Don’t be afraid to embellish upon your look - go far dazzling eyes and mix a little shimmer to your shadow (use the liquid transformer from Aveda to add lasting hold to any shadow)! For bold eyes, use a waterproof eyeliner to line the rims of

the eyes and create a slight cat eye, then incorporate an eyelash curler and volumizing mascara for an instantly sexy, dramatic look. Eyelash extensions are also a great option for this event-filled time. Onto lips...notice me lips are back and richer than ever! Be sure to first stain lips with your Aveda Nourish-Mint Lip Liner, then choose your Rehydrating Lip Glaze or Smoothing Lip color to set. You can also opt for a glossy nude lip. Line lips with a lip-tone color to enhance and add a glittery glaze to the middle of your lower lip for a pucker with extra dimension and shine. Pair any of these looks with dewy skin and flushed cheeks. You will feel instantly transformed. Celebrate yourself everyday with your makeup. You deserve to take time to shine! ‘Tis the season to be your best! You have the how-to’s to do it: all you need is to put them into action. Be good to yourself, so you may be great to others, and celebrate the beauty you have inside by exuding it on the outside. Cheers! North County Woman Fall 2013 | 21

Decor / holiday decorating

Coastal Holiday Cheer by Kerry Wright photography by denise vakili Talented interior designer, Georgene Scholey of Carras Designs in Carlsbad, created a holiday haven for this beautiful Carlsbad dining room. The elegant yet coastal vibe of the room is breathtaking! Read on as she explains how she created this fabulous look. Replicate some of her design tips and turn your own space into a holiday masterpiece. “I started by stringing driftwood and decking the halls with natural branches and large white magnolias to set a coastal tone to the room. I then enveloped the fireplace’s mantel with eucalyptus and pinecone garland highlighted with magnolias. This truly added a festive touch. I also draped the mirror in burlap and bark ribbons adding natural texture to the room. The silver wreath and tree boughs added just a touch of sparkle,” says Georgene. Placed next to the fireplace is a Man22 | North County Woman Fall 2013

zanita tree decorated with clear lights. Maintaining the coastal theme, she then chose gift wrap in neutral white and silvers, mixed with burlap, for the gifts under the tree. The picture-perfect table included a silver runner as well as candles, antique mercury glass hurricanes, and numerous Glassybaby votives scattered about to create an illuminating warm glow. The napkins were garnished with flocked pinecones and berries and complemented the Tuscan “Arte Italica” porcelain dinnerware. Vintage crystal wine glasses completed the flawless look. Georgene’s artful blend of elegance and ease makes this room decidedly sophisticated yet welcoming. Looking to bring some style or sophistication to your home? Wine / wine & cheese My First Red Wine Crush and Pairing Recommendations for Wine and Cheese by cindy lemos

www.winogal.com As a young wine steward at the famed Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, under the tutelage of Food and Beverage Manager Stewart Good, I quickly learned not to make a face when I tasted a wine that really made me pucker. I also memorized what he told me because it was my job to know these wines so as to be able to recommend them to our upscale clientele. But they just didn’t taste good to me… yet. It takes time to develop a love of heavier, more tannic reds. Some people never acquire that taste. It’s okay. To each her own when it comes to wine, just keep an open mind and keep tasting! Every fall the Ahwahnee holds the Vinter Dinner series, weeks of tasting seminars culminating in a 5-course gourmet dinner featuring that week’s winemakers and their wines. During the week, I’d work parties that accompanied the package; there was always a wine and cheese reception with huge platters of fruit in the Great Hall. This was my first experience with different cheeses and exotic fruits... and ice sculptures! I discovered those were created by an artist with a chainsaw on the back dock. The Ahwahnee is home to an amazing wine list – over 100 wines plus some 30

on the Captain’s List – Jordan Cabernet, Heitz Martha’s Vineyard, and Fay’s Vineyard (before Nathan Fay sold to Stags Leap). Chateau Montelena Chardonnay mingled with Chateau Lafite and Chateuneuf du Pape and other exotic names. Being fresh from college and carrying the requisite Almaden Vin Rose baggage, I presented quite the challenge. Luckily for Stew, I took to it admirably developing an immediate affection to whites. The reds took some time. There was one red wine on the list that I could drink – Duckhorn Three Palms Merlot, vintage 1983. Luscious, smooth fruit laced with juicy, ripe fig and cassis. There was a lot of tannin as it was still a young wine, however, I liked its plumy smoothness even then. Three Palms Vineyard is the pricier, vineyard select version of Duckhorn’s famed Napa Valley Merlot. While either bottle is nice, Three Palms is exquisite for a special evening! And instead of a single cheese, this bottle deserves a selection. The sharp, piquant flavors of cheddar go very well with this Merlot. I chose Stilton and Cheddar, New York Sharp and Smoked Cheddar, each melding with the wine in different and mouth watering ways.

Plump, ripe figs go perfectly with this pairing. There are many different varieties, so try a few different ones. You can serve them simply, or kick it up a bit by turning the oven to 500 degrees for 10 minutes, slice figs in half and lay on a well oiled sheet. Turn oven off and put figs in for 10 minutes. Pull out of oven, arrange on a pretty plate, and drizzle with local honey. If you are daring, a brush of ground white pepper…and viola. Scrumptious! White wines can be tricky to pair with cheese. The acid level in many whites can destroy the flavor of delicate cheeses while a super heavy blue cheese easily overpowers a delicate white wine. Fruit is a different story. The sweetness of fruit melds naturally with the tartness of many whites. A longtime favorite white is Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio. Clean and crisp, it is like biting into a Granny Smith apple with a faint lemony zest. A well-aged gouda pairs perfectly (at least two years) and not the smoked type for this wine. Cut into thin, random slices, arrange on a cheese plate, and serve at room temperate. The coup de grace is lightly chilled, sliced nectarines on your plate. Cheese and fruit plates are the perfect accompaniment to a small gathering of friends. It’s also a perfect excuse to pull out those decorative platters you have stashed somewhere (and never use!) and pull out those pretty wine glasses that have been collecting dust. Grab a bottle of wine or two, invite some friends and enjoy some girl time!

Legal / estate planning

Powers of Attorney: Why It’s So Important by becca fletcher

Becca Fletcher Law If the living trust is the “star of the show” within your basic estate planning documents, the powers of attorney are like the back-up singers. They are not noticed as often as the front man, but they are essential to the complete package of your estate plan. There are two different types of power of attorney documents included within a typical estate plan: the Durable Power of Attorney for Financial Affairs (DPAFA) and the Advance Health Care Directive (AHCD). Both of these documents serve a similar purpose: They both lay out your wishes with regard to whom you would want to make decisions for you in the event that you are unable to make the decisions for yourself. Specifically, the DPAFA designates someone to manage your money and the AHCD specifies who would make your health care decisions. To some people, planning for and designating an individual who would make decisions on your behalf should you be incapacitated may seem unnecessary and perhaps even ridiculous. However, despite the uncomfortable nature of this discussion, planning for these potential scenarios can help your family avoid a great deal of stress. In this article, we will look at a couple of scenarios where the DPAFA is used. First, let me say that between a husband and wife, a DPAFA is not always required. For example, if financial accounts are titled together between a husband and wife (meaning both names are on the account), a DPAFA is unnecessary as one spouse can continue to access jointly-owned accounts and/ or make changes to the accounts if the other spouse becomes incapacitated. The complications arise when there are accounts owned and titled by one spouse and not the other. Let’s explore the case of married couple Alice and Bob. Bob has a stroke, and he is now in a coma and unable to communicate. Alice and Bob have a checking account titled together for their everyday expenses. Bob has an investment account from a previous marriage titled in his name only and he has an IRA, which is titled in his name only as well (as is always the case for IRAs). Due to Bob’s health issue and his need for Alice’s help, she has been unable to work. As a result, the funds they had in their joint bank account have been depleted in order to pay for living expenses. Alice now needs access to Bob’s investment account and/or to tap into his IRA money to pay for his medical bills, or perhaps she needs to set him up in a facility to care for him should he make only a partial recovery. 24 | North County Woman Fall 2013

Unfortunately for Alice, she will not be able to gain access to Bob’s investment account and IRA because they are in his name only. Even though she is his wife and he is in a coma or otherwise incapacitated, she will not be able to access that money. When she speaks to the financial advisor or to the company with whom the account is held, they will ask her to produce either a DPAFA or a conservatorship document to allow them to give her access to the money, or even to give her information about the accounts. Because Alice and Bob did not prepare a DPAFA prior to Bob becoming incapacitated that option is out. Alice’s only option is to procure a conservatorship. What is a conservatorship? It is basically the probate court’s version of a DPAFA. It serves the same purpose a DPAFA serves in that it allows one person to speak on behalf of and make financial decisions for the other, but it is generated by the court system. Ahhhh, yes, the court system. While we are lucky to have the court system to help us when all else fails, it is not a particularly easy or enjoyable experience to have to jump through the hoops that the courts require and to wait the time that it takes for the court to go through the conservatorship process. It is not as though you can simply go online, click a few buttons, and swing by the court to pick up your document. In reality, you are required to petition the probate court with a specific document nominating yourself. The court will have to consider all of the person’s circumstances in a hearing to determine if that person is a suitable choice to be a conservator. The whole process is tedious, and many people would want the assistance of a probate attorney for help with handling the court forms, deadlines and appearances. This entire process, mind you, will potentially be going on while your loved one is lying in a hospital bed incapacitated. This is clearly not the time to be dealing with all of the difficulties of the court process. Furthermore, while the process drags on, the loved one, in our example Alice, cannot access the money from Bob’s accounts so she will likely be fending off creditors who want to be paid. Had Alice and Bob taken care of their estate plan, which would have included a DPAFA, the entire court process would have been avoided. Alice would have simply removed the DPAFA from her estate planning binder and provided it to the necessary institutions, along with proof of Bob’s incapacity (usually evidenced by letters from two physicians),

where Bob’s accounts were held. She would then have access to the funds. Not only can having a DPAFA be useful for married couples who have accounts titled individually (like accounts from prior marriages or IRAs), but DPAFAs can also be essential when children need to help out a parent with finances. Imagine Wendy who is a widow with three grown children. Wendy starts to show signs of dementia, and dementia quickly turns to Alzheimer’s before Wendy has had time or the presence of mind to prepare her estate plan. With her being incapacitated, Wendy can no longer write checks for herself or make decisions regarding the types of investments she should have, etc. It becomes apparent to her children that she needs help managing her finances. But before anyone can write checks for her or otherwise help with her financial decisions, again, either a DPAFA or a conservatorship will be required. But because no DPAFA was prepared in advance, someone will now be required to petition the court for the conservatorship. However, in this scenario, with three grown children, there may not be an obvious choice as to who should take over the finances. As you can imagine, if Wendy’s children cannot work it out amongst themselves as to who should petition the court for authority to handle the finances, the process will be even more lengthy and difficult. The court will have to hear evidence from each party as to why he/she would be the best choice to manage Wendy’s finances. Clearly, this process would likely have lasting repercussions on the relationship of the children. And we ultimately do not know who Wendy would have chosen to be her financial power of attorney! If Wendy would have prepared her DPAFA in advance, specifying whom she would want to manage her finances, the time and expense of the court system would have been avoided; the relationships of the children would have been preserved; and Wendy would have chosen whom she wanted managing her financial affairs. These are only a couple of examples demonstrating the importance of having estate planning documents, including the DPAFA, prepared in advance. As we saw with the discussion of revocable living trusts in the last issue, preparation of your estate planning documents truly helps your family avoid additional and unnecessary stress.

Humor / fashion compassion

Razzle, Dazzle & Frazzle (A Column for Female Laughs) Ration Your Fashion Compassion! by stephanie lewis My gal pals are throwing one of those clothing parties where you bring all your wardrobe faux pas from the back of your closet, then display them so everyone else can laugh, err I mean like something you own. You earn credit for what they select and use it to trade/barter for their items, at which point you basically go home with more stuff to sell in your next garage sale. Now, does that sound like fun to you?? I enlisted my 16-year-old daughter’s help so I wouldn’t accidentally give away a high fashion item - - highly improbable since I don’t own any. As I caressed my stack of Swatch watches, we both surveyed my closet contents until she broke the sad silence, “Well, how many points can you get for your hangers? They’re the nice padded kind.” “Now wait just a Gloria Vanderbilt minute, Missy. What are you saying? That I have bad taste? There’s nothing here anyone would want?” “Not necessarily. I hear they’re doing a Flashdance revival show downtown,” she replied. “Oh fine,” I said. “What about all those nice shoes over there?” “Those Espadrilles?” she wrinkled her nose. “Don’t you have any Stella McCartney’s or Yves Saint Laurent’s?” She took a deep breath, “And no Gucci? Armani? Louboutin? Balenciaga? Zanotti? Or how about Fiorentini?” “Yes I agree - pasta sounds great! Let’s go out for fettuccini or linguini.” “Mom,” she said exasperatingly, “Not even one Jason Wu or Jimmy Choo!?” “Gesundheit dear, must be the dust in here,” I said

absentmindedly. “And I’ll have you know on that rack behind those leg warmers, you’ll find footloads of Targetellas and a special designer pair of PaylessaLobotomy. Now I’m tired of this subject. All I really know about shoes is there once was a little old woman who lived in one!” “Okay, okay, don’t get so touchy,” she grimaced, placing her hand on my thickly padded shoulder. “Let’s have a look at your skinny jeans. What brand name are they?” “Ugh,” I responded. “No, mom. Uggs are footwear again.” “I mean Ugh, as in my only pair of skinny jeans exploded last time I sneezed,” I confessed. “Alright, we’re not making much progress. Let’s take a peak at your belts.” “If God wanted fruit to cinch their middles, he would’ve given us a waist,” I said, recalling Glamour magazine claiming I was an Apple instead of a Pear. I also found out it’s best for me to stick with things that lightly graze my breasts, while skimming my hips and hugging my thighs. Kinda like the hungry, drunk guy at my last Super Bowl party! “Alright, I can see my work here is nearly done,” My daughter tapped her Fendi heel, obviously eager to chalk this experience up to having a square mother who was beyond help and needed to get back to what she probably imagined was my boring record collection. “Let’s look at something even you can’t get wrong. Your Aunt with the purse addiction always gives you a designer clutch for your birthday every year, right? So bring out all your new, pretty bags.”

Aha! I would finally triumph at the closet game! I watched my daughter’s puzzled expression as I emptied my Duran Duran and Go-Go albums from the dozens of colorful paper gift bags I had purchased from the dollar store. “Yep. We’re sure getting closer to our goal,” she said exhaustedly, picking up my car keys. “We’ll continue this after I pick up some Juicy Couture.” “Okay, but take lots of napkins,” I shouted after her, “I don’t want anything dripping on the driver’s seat.” My daughter continued to roll her eyes all the way to the clothing swap party the next night. But once there, she happily traded all her gently worn last year’s summer styles for brand new (at least to her) back-to-school designer duds. Meanwhile, I sat in the back of the room, played my 8-tracks, and held a bake sale where the money will soon benefit poor confused, fashion challenged women who still Jazzercise and sleep in waterbeds. As for being a fashionista? Let’s just say I’m scrutinizing all the pages from this current issue of “North County Women” and am hopeful that next year at this time, I will be a runway model. A clothing designer? How about seated in the audience of a fashion show? Using the bathroom in the local Nordstroms?? Okay, okay, I’ll settle for coming out of my closet with my head held high - and that’s only because I will no longer be wearing those large, clunky, 80’s style earrings that currently weigh it down! Wrangling Your Hormones with Food and Lifestyle by marti avila

Certified Health Coach What comes to mind when someone mentions the word hormones? Perhaps you think of the woman who always seems to be fanning herself in a crowd no matter how cold it is? Maybe you think of the middle-aged women whose belly puffs out as far or farther than her breasts? Or is it the lady in your office that is always crying, laughing or so excessively irritated that you have learned to tip toe around her in order not to “upset” her? If those women happen to be between their mid-thirties and late fifties, chances are they are in perimenopause or in the middle of menopause. It’s sad but true. There are some women that sail through these years without as much as a bleep on their “life” screen. And there are others who suffer the wrath of angry hormones.

Helping you find the property of your dreams!

Those women with the angry hormones...their lives as they knew them probably came to a screeching halt and got derailed by one or more of the many symptoms of menopause: excessive weight gain, lack of sleep, scattered thoughts and brain fog, fatigue, digestive problems, depression, non-existent libido, irritability, hair loss, cravings, anxiety, and insomnia! To add insult to injury, some of them may have taken on the “square butt” or that famous belly that shouts to the world, “Hey, everybody, I’m in menopause!” Oh, and don’t forget all that sweating. Yes…A LOT of sweating! There’s so much sweating that they’ve earned their own categorizations: “Hot Flashes” during the day and “Night Sweats” at night. Lovely. It’s almost enough to make you think that God really ISN’T a woman! The great news? By giving your body what it needs, you can not only eliminate all of these debilitating symptoms, but reverse them and get back to your good ole, slender, happy, pretty, non-sweaty self! The reason this happens is because your body stops producing hormones that it needs to run smoothly. Lifestyle and eating the correct foods are a huge deterrent and/or benefit along with adding the correct hormones. Let’s face it, at this age our hormone making ability is kaput. It’s up to us to bring what we need from outside sources. If not, the out-of-whack hormones continue to wreak havoc on your life. Just ask the man and other members in your home. So what do we need:

these so stay tuned! AND the ‘Pièce de Résistance’: REAL, live, fresh, organic food! I’m not suggesting going completely vegan or even vegetarian, but incorporating just enough greens and fruit on a daily basis to keep your body healthy and happy. Making small, positive adjustments to your daily life can make the difference between being happy or being cranky and miserable. Foods that worsen and exacerbate menopausal symptoms: • Sugar • Cow dairy • Processed and Refined foods • Gluten • Wheat • Sodas • Saccharin (or any artificial sweeteners) • Junk (fast) Food (Saturated Fats, Trans Fats, • High Fructose Corn Syrup, MSG) • Alcohol Foods that help nourish your body and curb cravings: • Flax • Whole Organic Grains • Live Organic Greens • Organic Fruits • Organic, free range, antibiotic- and hormone-free chicken and turkey • Good fats and oils • Supplements • Water (preferably Alkaline water) • Love, Happiness, Fun…and maybe a dog (I just want a dog so I thought I’d throw that in) The next time you pick up something to eat, ask yourself: “Is this going to make me cranky, sleepless and hairless or happy, calm and nice?!?” Marti Avila, is a Certified Health Coach that has decades of living a healthy, happy lifestyle finding humor wherever she can. Breast Cancer PREVENTION

Detect breast cancer 8 to 10 years before the current method.

bY CATHRINE JOHNSON

Silk Thermal Imaging Each year more young women are being diagnosed with breast cancer. In the last 3 decades breast cancer rates in women under 40 have tripled. In spite of this, there are no screening guidelines for women under 40 and with good reason. Studies show that mammography is most effective in women over 50, and least effective in women under 50. What we aren’t being told is that there is a safer, more effective way to detect breast cancer. It’s called Thermography. Thermography is a very safe and accurate option. Where mammography looks at the structure of the breast, Thermography looks at the physiology of breast, seeing changes occurring at the cellular level. Cancer is highly metabolic, meaning it’s very hot. So how can Thermography detect breast cancer? Thermography works by measuring temperature variations in the breasts that can be indications of a cancerous or pre-cancerous state. Thermography can also distinguish between benign and malignant breast abnormalities in all age groups with 97% sensitivity. Most importantly, Thermography has a prevention element that is never discussed with mammography. Thermography can detect breast cancer years before a

FDA Approved • Radiation-Free • Pain-Free mammogram, when the cancerous mass is a small cluster of cells. Many times these abnormal cell clusters can be treated with holistic methods and the condition reversed. Thermography uses no radiation, no bodily contact and is 100% safe.
