14 Our Mission: North Cross School is an independent, nonsectarian, collegepreparatory school that serves children from early childhood through twelfth grade. North Cross provides a rigorous academic curriculum, competitive with the best college-preparatory schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. While we explicitly recognize the importance of intellectual development and academic achievement, we also strive to promote personal integrity, empathy, and responsibility to self and community. Through this, our graduates will act as leaders in the local and global communities, persons of intellectual and moral courage, and scholars in the service of others.

Letter from the Head of School
Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D.
“Your support has made North Cross a truly exceptional place to be and, for that, we are deeply indebted to you and intensely proud of what we have become.”
It has been a remarkable year at North Cross School, one marked by record fundraising, significant physical changes to our campus, growth in enrollment, and some really fine teaching. Each of these is a marker of an established school taking its rightful place among the very best independent schools in Virginia and none of it happens without the support of our families. Our annual Honor Roll of Donors speaks directly to the financial support we have enjoyed this year, support that includes more than $400,000 given to the North Cross Foundation in support of student scholarships, $245,000 in annual-fund giving, $70,000 to assist our CrossWalk program, and another successful Gala. We also continue to receive very generous donations to the Legacy Campaign: Building on Excellence which speaks to the fact that North Cross’s future is a solid and worthwhile investment. This is usually the point in letters like this where I provide a list of all of the programs on our campus that could only happen with your financial support. But what I would rather do is to invite you on our campus to see what your support is doing. I invite you to schedule an appointment any time, any day, and I will make sure you see something extraordinary on our grounds that is only made possible by your
support. In this way, you will see firsthand, the difference between North Cross and any other school in the Valley. Take today, for instance: even with the rain, our builders were installing interior walls in our new library. Parents showed up for our annual Halloween Parade and saw our seniors escorting their JK-4 buddies along the parade route. I handed out Vietnamese coins to Lower School students who, while pleased to have a coin worth 500 Dong, were equally disappointed when they found out the actual value in American currency. I snuck a peak at Mr. Rudolph’s music class and saw Mr. Lamas playing the bongo drums with the four-yearold class. Nikki del Castillo, mother of Max ’25, stopped by to pick up the plastic recycling we have been collecting for our latest run at the Trex® school collection competition. Shree Patel ’28, and her mom brought in a Diwali present to mark the victory of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Our number one ranked football team lifted and schemed in the Carter Athletic Center in preparation for their big game on Saturday. Lastly, Winston, one of our international students, walked by my window, said “hello,” and asked how I was doing, while playing with Raider and Huck. The new library is obviously amazing, but much of what else I wrote about may seem

RIGHT: Boots and Bling was the theme for last year’s Winter Gala and Auction. Line dancing always pairs well with raising the paddle!

THIS JUST IN! LEFT: Just before we finished up this issue, our Boys Varsity Football team won the VISAA DII State Championship game against Blue Ridge School, 42-6. This is the first State Championship win for the team since 2011 and the first as a team in Division II. Even as the smallest team in the Division, the Raiders held an impressive lead throughout the game.
to be ordinary at first glance. I promise you, though, it is extraordinary. Think about 8-year olds being aware that currency is different in different countries and that there are relative values. Or, of the fact that we have a dynamic music program that extends down to our youngest students—and that we have a Lower School director that takes the time to jam with them on the bongos. Or, think of our Green Club that focuses on collecting hard to recycle, but ubiquitous, low density polyethylene so that it can be transformed into outdoor
furniture. And, isn’t it fantastic that we have such a broad, multicultural community that includes recognition of Diwali and a new student from Vietnam? Finally, there may be nothing more amazing than a school our size playing 11-man football, up a division, and being the most successful program in the state over the past decade [see above]. This is extraordinary stuff. So I invite you to come on our campus and allow me to show you all that happens here. Your support has made North Cross a truly
exceptional place to be and, for that we are deeply indebted to you and intensely proud of what we have become. So it is with humility and great pride that I say, there has never been a better time to be at North Cross. Sincerely,
Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D. Head of School
LEFT/CENTER: The Upper School’s all-school summer reading assignment was Liza Mundy’s ’78 Code Girls. Among the activities organized to explore some of the book’s themes, art students created multi-media pieces illustrating the subject. RIGHT: The Horace G. Fralin Program for Global Studies hosted a debate between two seniors, Ruxi Dancea ’19 and Howard Zhou ’19, who went head to head to discuss China’s potential of becoming a world power through its expanding trade efforts. The debate brought to life the ideas presented in the Global Studies summer reading book The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan. 5

Letter from the Board of Trustees I am pleased to report on another excellent year at North Cross School. I want to express my gratitude to my fellow board members, the School’s administration, faculty, staff, and parent organizations for their commitment to the School and for their dedication to our students’ success and academic experience. As we enter our 75th academic year and witness the central campus transformation through the projects made possible by the capital campaign, there is so much to be excited about for North Cross and our future. Current enrollment has reached a ten-year high and the School remains financially sound. The Board of Trustees continues to work on behalf of our students and their families to support North Cross in providing the best educational opportunities in the region. We are also looking ahead to forge the strongest path for North Cross as a top-tier independent school that meets the needs of a growing and changing Roanoke Valley. Several new and promising academic initiatives were created during the 2018-19 academic year including the No Ceilings program in the Middle School and the STEM Certificate Scholars program in the Upper School. Our Lower School students embraced and modeled the principles of the Courtesy Initiative, an effort that emphasizes the importance of kindness, good manners, and building conversation skills. In the first weeks of the current school year, the School announced a new program of study with the introduction of the Fine
Arts Distinction. Similar in structure to our Global Studies and STEM Certificate programs, the Fine Arts Distinction aims to engage interested students in an in-depth study and experience in arts education. In Athletics last year, the Varsity Boys’ Soccer team brought home a state championship, and six members of the Class of 2019 committed to play at the collegiate level. North Cross students have a new chance to compete thanks to the addition of a club-level ice hockey program through the School’s partnership with Lancerlot Sports Complex, as well as the expansion of the Pixie Program for our youngest students in both field hockey and girls’ lacrosse. The North Cross Alumni Association has established an Athletic Hall of Fame to recognize individual athletes, teams, and coaches who have excelled in interscholastic sports at North Cross. The first Hall of Fame class will be inducted in March 2020. Your investment in North Cross and support of our students help make these many milestones and opportunities happen for us. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your commitment to North Cross and for the positive impact you are having on our students.
Talfourd H. Kemper, Jr.
“I am excited to see the campaign take shape and am thrilled to witness what will be one of the most transformative events in our School’s strong history.”
Sincerely,
Fourd Kemper Chair of the Board of Trustees
LEFT: In December, the entire school took part in donating and assembling care packages to send to our troops over seas. The effort was spearheaded by Kindergarten teacher Melanie Harrison whose son had been deployed in Afghanistan. CENTER: In February, musician Tom Teasley brought an assortment of percussion instruments from around the world. He spent two days as an artist in residence with the school, attending music classes and Symposium. RIGHT: The first graduating class of the STEM Certificate Program finished their year with a Capstone Poster 6Presentation where they discussed their original research projects. Subjects ranged from environmental science to artificial intelligence.

A Work in P R O G R E S S
The transformative construction on campus has been fast-paced and students are already enjoying some of the gains made in the Upper School, while Old Slack residents prepare for their final farewells.
The momentum and excitement around the Legacy Campaign continues to grow and we are pleased to report that fundraising for the project has reached over $11 million in cash and pledges toward our $14 million goal. We are grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support that our community has shown so far for this effort and look forward to reaching out to our larger community in the coming months. For those who have been on campus in recent months, you have witnessed the progress that is currently underway. A new access road to the Carter Athletic Center was added over the summer as well as the first updates to the Upper School including the addition of a new roof, new science labs, renovated restrooms, and an updated senior lounge. The traffic circle in front of Old Slack Hall has been removed to make room for the new forum in the center of campus. The first part of the “new builds” on campus is well underway with the construction of a centralized area for Administration Offices that will house Admission, Development, Marketing, the Heads of School, and Finance. The new offices connect to the current Lower School lobby and the anticipated completion date is February 2020. Construction has started around the Upper School and the footprint and framing of what will be the new library is taking shape. The space will be completed by early next year and will include collaborative meeting rooms, a dedicated archive space, a technology classroom, and a reading instruction area for Lower School students. Connected to the library will be the new Student Center. The Student Center will serve as the heart of campus and will provide students with an area to meet and work collaboratively on projects during the school day as well as a safe environment to gather and study after school. We look forward to its 12
completion by the beginning of school in September 2020. In February, Old Slack Hall will be torn down with the exception of Fishburn Auditorium. Fishburn Auditorium will become Fishburn Theatre and will undergo a major renovation which will include the addition of a full-sized stage, backstage area and dressing rooms, and new seating. The CrossWalk Program will temporarily move to the new Administration space while construction takes place on their new building throughout the spring and summer months. The new CrossWalk Program space will allow the growing program to accommodate twice the number of students it does today and will also be completed by the beginning of school in September 2020. Watch the project as it unfolds and follow the progress of the Legacy Campaign by visiting our interactive campaign website at www.northcrosslegacy.org. On the website you will find the master plan which includes brief video summaries on each project, an in-depth construction timeline, photos of the transformation, blog posts, interviews, and more! We hope you will join us in our excitement and joy as this momentous project becomes a reality for our students and the School! If you would like more information about the Legacy Campaign or are interested in supporting the project, please contact Director of Development Joanna Coleman at jcoleman@northcross.org.

The Administrative Offices (left) will be completed by February and will house the Admission, Development, Finance Office, Heads of School and Marketing.
Above and right, initial renderings of the renovated Fishburn Theatre. When complete, the stage will be deepened and widened, new seating will be added and, behind the scenes, there will be more storage and dressing rooms. Students are reaping the added benefits of the new science labs (left) that welcomed them back at the start of the school. One of the new additions includes a vaccum system that allows for faster titration— a feature not normally enjoyed until college!
The all new CrossWalk space (rendered above) will include additional classrooms that will double its capacity and will be completed by the start of school in 2020.

QUESTIONS
1
Looking back, what do you value most about your time at North Cross?
I personally commend North Cross’ adherence to a strict honor code, which I believe instills in our students and faculty a trustworthy moral compass. As young people (and older folks), we may lose our focus and stray off course; however, the principals that North Cross put in front of us daily help redirect us back to the right path and put us on our way to amazing life-work journeys.
2 BILL HOUCK, CLASS OF 1969, returned to campus recently to reflect on his time here, his upcoming reunion, and his ideas for the future.

How do you think the school has changed over the last 50 years? How has it stayed the same? The physical plant is going through an awesome metamorphosis. I love the transformation we’ve seen from our early years. Contemporizing the old cold metal and cinder block shells by integrating them with new, inviting buildings has added warmth to the campus. The upcoming Alumni Oyster Roast & Reunion [on November 30, 2019] will be a great time for alumni to see firsthand the “new” old school.
What are your hopes for the School over the next 50 years? I would really like to see North Cross become more inclusive of the Roanoke Valley’s citizens by inviting them to unique and interesting “open” events. For instance, we could develop a regular speakers series (i.e. TED Talks), as well as frequent showings of independent films (i.e. Sundance), and possibly “unplugged” concerts (i.e Austin City Limits). These events can be the gateway for newcomers onto our lovely campus, and a way for folks to see North Cross from the inside of the buildings as opposed to visiting us just for sporting events where they want to beat us up!

GETTING WITH
<THE_PROGRAM> Marie Nganele ’11 scrapped her first life plan to join the marketing world, and discovered a new passion: computer science
Marie Nganele ’11 talks with us, not on the phone, but over Facetime, which is apropos of the fact that she now lives a life filled with languages like Python and Java—languages that were not in her lexicon when she was a student at North Cross. Then, she was more concerned with upping her French language skills. Marie and her brother Thomas ’14 entered North Cross (she in Middle School, he, in Lower) when her family moved to the area from New York. Besides her apparent aptitude in studio art, she also fell in love with French, studying the language further in her free time. She eventually decided to take the French AP test for practice to see how she might do in AP French the following year. She scored the highest score possible—a five. Now what? “The teachers at North Cross definitely encouraged students to follow their interests and to develop their own course of learning.” So, she created her own independent study in French, and now she is fluent.

North Cross Annual Fund | 2018–19 Annual Report
Speaking with her as she sat in the stairwell of a library at Columbia University, Marie recounts how she came to computer science after originally attending to study psychology as preparation for entering marketing and public relations after graduation, which she did. However, it quickly became apparent that her plan was not playing out as she expected. She was unhappy in her job and dreaded each morning she had to go to work. Her father encouraged her to take some time with him in Munich. She could live there with him, rent-free, and figure out her next move. There, she decided to take some online computer science classes through Khan Academy after reading several books, one of which, Weaving the Web by Tim Bernes-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, illustrates the original vision behind a digitally connected world. The potential in programming inspired her.
“Computer science and tech is where the next progression lies and I wanted to be a part of that progress.” Already having a bachelor’s degree, she did not want to go back for another fouryear degree, so, after plans for attending a French university’s two-year program fell through, her mother suggested she go back to Columbia and take the post-baccalaureate requirements for computer science. She had already graduated from there once, so it shouldn’t be difficult to get back in, her mother proposed. Her mother was right, and Marie will graduate, again, this year, but this time with a B.S. in Computer Science and the knowledge she needs in order to move forward in a field she loves. In keeping with her “learn as you go” tendencies, this past summer, Marie took an internship at the startup company, NOSH, and was asked to build an iOS app from the
“ Computer science and tech is where the next progression lies, and I wanted to be a part of that progress.”
ground up. “I told them that I had never done this before, but they were willing to let me learn, so I agreed.” When asked what she plans to do after she receives her degree, she wants to fill a need that is not already met in the app sphere: “There are a lot of apps out there right now for the ‘worried well,’ those people who are healthy but just want to confirm how healthy they are [think MyFitnessPal, a fitness sharing app], but there aren’t a lot of apps out there for people who are actually, truly ill.” Her mother and father are both in healthcare fields, so she looks to them for advice and introductions for helping her take this next step: “Why not lean on what you have around you to make connections?” When asked if she has noticed or experienced any barriers for women or minorities in the computer science field, she noted that tech companies seem to be actively making up for this vacancy, recruiting minorities and women for positions. “[The companies] realized there is a discrepancy there and are taking measures to fix it.” So, with her next step on the horizon, what kind of mindset makes for a successful coder? Her answer: confidence in the creative process. She appreciates her North Cross AP Art teacher, Annette Phaeffle, who valued her students’ freedom of expression: “She encouraged her students to be playful and creative, and even though I don’t use many of the art skills today that I learned then, I definitely carry that mindset with me in coding, and in life.” If she had to do it over again, she wishes she had taken a gap year so that she would have had the time to get to know what she wanted to do sooner. But, life, like algorithms, aren’t always straightforward or easy to figure out. The best one can do is to try, try again.
Above: Marie took advantage of a trip to France her junior year where she stayed with a host family after traveling and visiting the sights with her North Cross cohorts.
