Our Mission: North Cross School is an independent, nonsectarian, college-preparatory school that serves children from early childhood through twelfth grade. North Cross provides a rigorous academic curriculum, competitive with the best college-preparatory schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. While we explicitly recognize the importance of intellectual development and academic achievement, we also strive to promote personal integrity, empathy, and responsibility to self and community. Through this, our graduates will act as leaders in the local and global communities, persons of intellectual and moral courage, and scholars in the service of others.

Letter from the Head of School
Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D.
“ The changes we have planned and made in our academic programs over the past four years have been effective. Daily, we teach our students to succeed, and they do.”
As Head of School, writing for the fall edition of AllPoints is always special. It is my time to thank the many donors and supporters listed in our Honor Roll of Giving and time to share the good news about all the great things we are achieving at North Cross School. Last year, we received gifts totaling $944,944 to support our operations, endowment, events, arts, athletics, and capital needs. I am deeply appreciative of our generous community and all you do to support North Cross. Thank you. Now, let me tell you how these gifts have helped North Cross’ students and our school and why the North Cross educational experience is the best in the region. We have not rested on our laurels and we continue to look for paths to grow. The changes we have planned and made in our academic programs over the past four years have been effective. Daily, we teach our students to succeed, and they do. We already have a strong Lower School and our investment in programs like Word Study, Singapore Math, Lower School Spanish, and technology is producing stronger, more prepared students. Visitors to the school regularly comment on how much more advanced our students are — in reading, writing, handwriting, solving problems, Spanish, and presentation skills — and how much they seem to enjoy their classes. In each of our divisions, we celebrate a
culture that places high value on academic rigor, as our students are challenged in each grade and grow more competent and confident as they advance. As you may recall, we have continued to emphasize Advanced Placement coursework in the Upper School, enhancing both the number of courses offered and our classroom instruction; and we have continued to measure its success. We evaluate our AP results by individual student and teacher to determine how best we can meet the students’ needs. The latest updates indicate our progress and show another increase in the number of AP Scholars, shown in the updated graph below, a total of 35 AP Scholars —7 of whom were AP Scholars with Honor, 15 were Scholars with Distinction, and 2 were National Scholar awards. A North Cross educational experience goes beyond the classroom walls and happens in the many other venues our students encounter with their teachers. Those

“classroom” experiences take place on trips to Williamsburg, sessions in the Lower School garden, late-night review sessions after long days at Harvard Model UN, in practices getting our teams ready for competition, as they prepare for performances or concerts, or as they deliver Thanksgiving baskets to needy families or work with Roanoke Catholic to clean up a neighborhood in a joint community service project. Wherever our students go, their education follows. Our art programs and its students are flourishing under the guidance of an experienced and talented faculty, and with the support of our parents through the Friends of the Arts. We held our first Lower School musical, Cinderella, and recently staged their second production, Alice in Wonderland, Jr. Our dramatic performance, Inherit the Wind, had the largest cast of any in recent school history and Oklahoma! truly was a memorable performance. Individual achievement and district accolades to choral and band performers were, once again, numerous. As individuals and as a school community, we continue to impact others’ lives, including 50 families who received complete Thanksgiving meals. Though the individual minimum hours requirement was 12.5 hours, last year our Upper School performed 3,801 hours of community service at over 50 agencies and/or events. That’s an average
of about 22.1 hours per student. Lower and Middle School performed projects as well, helping others over the holidays and throughout the year through programs like PB&J Day and Jump for Heart. North Cross’ athletic achievement is always noteworthy and this past year was no exception. With a terrific group of coaches leading them, our students are some of the toughest opponents other schools face. We regularly and successfully “play up” against bigger schools and our teams rise to the challenge. Last year, our Boys Tennis won a second state championship, the Cross Country team finished first in its conference, Girls Junior Varsity Field Hockey went undefeated, Girls Swimming won our conference, and Boys Swimming finished second. Of our 2016 graduating class, over 10 seniors are competing this year in college, and many of our athletes received conference, division, and all-state honors. Financially, we are pleased to report that for the third year in a row, we have finished the year with an operational surplus. Our audit reported an $185,989 operating surplus. We retired more of our long term debt, made capital improvements, put money in the CAC PPRRSM (provision for plant replacement, renewal and special maintenance) account and we reduced our line of credit needs — all signs of a strong school. With the help of
revenues from our school in China, North Cross-Xinhe School, we continue to become one of the strongest independent schools in the Commonwealth. To that end, the addition of Deborah Jessee as Assistant Head of School, will give our curriculum the scrutiny it requires and our faculty the support they deserve. Mandarin classes began this year, and our CrossCurrrents series has held its first two public speaking events, with many more planned throughout the year. Our new school information and classroom communication system, onCampus, allows our students, parents, faculty, and alumni to communicate with 21st century tools to effectively keep in touch with everything connected to North Cross. Last, but by no means least, Cook Field opened for soccer and field hockey play on October 15th and the celebration of Richard and Nancy Cook Field was a grand event, worthy of Richard’s tenure and contributions to our school and the Roanoke Valley. Again, I cannot thank you enough for all your support and I am so pleased with all the great things our students are doing. I can’t wait to update you next year on our continued success.

Letter from the Board of Trustees I am pleased to report on another incredible year at North Cross School. I’ll start by giving credit where credit is due—a strong administration, a caring faculty, talented students, and an engaged parent body. Together, these groups make up a vibrant school community with each one contributing to North Cross’s overall success. Dr. Proctor has discussed North Cross’ academic, artistic, and athletic successes in his letter. I want to tell you what is going on from a financial, development, and Board oversight perspective. The school ended the 2015-16 fiscal year in a financially sound position. We closed the books with an operating surplus of $185,989. We used much of this surplus to retire debt and we are on track to retire all of our remaining long-term debt by November. In preparation for our ten-year VAIS accreditation, the Board spent a significant amount of time reviewing the School’s strategic plan in order to ensure that North Cross has a clear path forward for implementing financial and operational improvements in the coming decade. We also adopted new policies to increase transparency and oversight from a Board level. Most important, we welcomed feedback from our parents and staff by conducting an anonymous parent survey last November. The results helped us gauge where the school is meeting expectations and where there are opportunities for improvement. The Board plans to conduct this survey each year going forward so that we can better understand on which areas to place our focus.
The Board and the Development Office have put a special emphasis on re-engaging members of the North Cross community who may not be as involved on campus as they once were. My wife, Heather, and I brought current and former trustees together for a reception in May to update everyone on the School’s progress and plans. Likewise, the Development Office coordinates events, such as the annual fall alumni party and the alumni soccer game, to bring former students back into the fold. The Development Office works in partnership with the Alumni Board, making their efforts more successful. The individuals who we are reaching are committed to the school’s success and have valuable insights to share. I am excited to keep the conversation going with our past trustees and alumni as we move forward. Our community remains extraordinarily generous—gifts to the School for 2016-17 totaled $940,000. This includes the $311,716 raised for the Annual Fund which supports the general operations of the School, and the $406,850 for the Nancy and Richard Cook Athletic Field, our new state-of-art soccer and field hockey facility. Thank you all for your support. If 2015-16 is any indication of what’s to come, I cannot wait to see what’s in store for the year ahead. Thank you for your part in making our goals a reality—and as Dr. Proctor says, there has never been a better time to be at North Cross School.
Russ Ellett ’84

North Cross Annual Fund | 2015–16 Annual Report
The arts programming at North Cross can not be summarized by an event or two. It is all around us, every day: the echos in the dining hall from band practice; paintings in Logan Gallery as students walk to morning assembly in Fishburn; amazing student singers, musicians, dancers and actors performing while we sip coffee at the FOTA Coffeehouse; or third, fourth and fifth graders putting on a musical so polished that it prompts audience members to whisper “She’s only eleven!?” We are not only fortunate to have such a dedicated arts program, staff, and volunteers, but also to have such talented and creative students grace our hallways every day.

student singers were selected for the Virginia Choral Director Association’s All District Choir.
The Upper School Spring Musical, Oklahoma!, was a great success. Along with the Lower School Musical, and the winter theatrical production, our theatre arts offer plenty of opportunities for our stars to shine.
Of the nine students selected to the Virginia Choral Director Association’s All Distric Choir, two singers, Jacob Wadstrom ‘20 and Jack Fishwick ‘16 (left), received the highest scores in their divisions for the voice part.
Thanks to the generous donors of Friends of the Arts, two pottery wheels now have a home in the art studio, expanding the breadth of media offered. Our annual Student Art Exhibit in Logan Gallery allows the entire community to enjoy the work of Lower through Upper School artists.

Character
3,801hours of community service by Upper School students 2 full days of service for Middle School
50
Character counts. We expect our students to be a contributing part of the community beyond our walls. Whether it’s jumping rope to raise money for the American Heart Association, asking for donations for a peanut butter and jelly drive, or cleaning up an area neighborhood side by side with a school who has historically been our arch rival, our students learn to appreciate what it means to make a meaningul impact in life. Community service starts in the Lower School with on-campus activities to bring awareness of the needs around us. In Middle School, students leave campus to perform two full days of service for various organizations, as shown below at Feeding America Southwest.
Families provided with Thanksgiving Meals
Director of Counseling Leigh Ann Hamlin assembled middle and upper school girls to watch and discuss the film “Finding Kind,” from the Kind Campaign— an organization that brings awareness to the negative and lasting effects of female bullying. The take-home message: “We don’t all have to agree with each other, conform to one another’s ideas, or even like each other ... but we all need to be kind.”
Before the beginning of school, the Football team joined forces with Roanoke Catholic’s team to clean up the Gainsboro neighborhood before the start of the season. The two teams hadn’t played each other in seven years, but, as their respective coaches pointed out, “Each school has a noble mission, caring adults pursuing that mission, and great kids in its respective student body. The schools should benefit from being associated with each other and competing with each other in athletics.” The two teams went on to play each other in their season opener the following Friday and North Cross began their season by winning the game 34–14.

The Boys Varsity Cross Country team won their first conference championship in 12 years during the 2015 season led strongly by senior Walter Mann (center front) who earned conference honors. Coach Ed Dickenson also was recognized by the Conference as Coach of the Year for his comprehensive approach and unwavering leadership.

Athletics
1VISAA D-II State Championship (Boys V. Tennis) 6 Conference Championship Titles 2 Coaches of the Year (Dickenson & Pollock) The North Cross School athletic program is based on the knowledge that a well-exercised, competitive young person can learn about himself or herself on the athletic field in a way difficult to match in other areas of school life. The development of the complete person is the goal of both the faculty and students at North Cross and that goal is enthusiastically pursued in our athletic program. The 2015-16 school year was a winning example of our student athletes’ dedication to sportsmanship and skill with a number of conference and state championship titles for all three seasons.
Boys Varsity Baseball celebrated its second year at the state semi-finals, Boys Varsity Basketball had their third year as VIC champions, and Boys Varsity Lacrosse made it to the state finals.
The spring of 2016 marked an outstanding year for Boys Varsity Tennis’ as they finished season 14-0, as VIC Champions, and as the VISAA Division II State Champions. For the first time in ten years, Girls Varsity Swimming took the Conference Championship. Margo Winn ’18 and Maddie Robinson ’16 (left) were awarded Blue Ridge Conference Co-Swimmers of the Year at the Winter Athletic Awards. 23

North Cross students have many opportunities to learn in the multitude of “classrooms” we make available. Whether collaborating on the playing field, making friends with a senior buddy, listening to a fellow student’s DeHart speech, or travelling to another country, there is no shortage of ways North Cross redefines the classroom.
Beyond
350 Global Studies students produced a journal that includes reflections and photographs from their journeys in the program.
Last spring break four students and one alumnus joined teacher Robert Robillard for a spring break trip to visit North CrossXinhe School in Shanghai. Ruxi Dancea ’19, Kevin Bao ’18, Jane Ward ’16, Trey Garst ’18, and Ryan Hunt ’14 (from left to right) spent 10 days traveling, waiting (26 hours of delays), eating, walking, studying, posing, and connecting. Bao’s mother joined the group and helped the students explore her historic hometown Nanjing, a former capital. Students were able to sleep in the Xinhe campus dorms and spend time with the students there while also visiting cultural atractions.
“Fat Pencils” awarded since 1986 to students who have been at the school 12 or more years. In 2016, 13 were awarded to the senior class.
Throughout the year our Upper School students hear a variety of perspectives from outside speakers. iDebate Rwanda visited last fall and conducted workshops, demonstrated debate, and explained how Rwanda, in only one generation, has gone from a place of genocide to being described as the best place to do business in Africa. The interaction that students had with the iDebate Rwanda team was designed to help with critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking skills, and community leadership. Later that year, Symposium, a program which brings business and thought leaders in the community on to campus, introducing our students to a vast spectrum of fields—from yoga to interior design, cupcakes to disease pathology.

Final Word: Scholarships at North Cross
D
avid Lake, our admission director, is regularly asked: “Does North Cross offer scholarships?” The answer is yes and no. Through the years we have had a number of generous donors who have funded a permanently restricted endowment for a particular purpose, most of which are awarded by the admission team to qualified applicants who meet the specified criteria of the donor. Families such as Fink, Spain, Willis, Worthy and others have given generously to establish these scholarships. The funds are awarded based on excellence in varying academic skills or attributes such as proficiency in English literature, skilled athletic ability, exemplary citizenship, etc., and are coupled with a family’s need. The Founders Scholarship is a merit-based award that helps North Cross attract and retain the best and brightest students in the Roanoke Valley. Qualified candidates must demonstrate excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. In the last two years, generous donors have come forward to establish three new scholarship funds: • DeHart-Grayson Merit Scholarship Fund provides merit aid to a new Upper School child or grandchild of an alumnus/a. The criteria match those of our Founders Scholarship. This fund is open to anyone who would like to donate. • The Teter Family Scholarship Fund offers financial aid to an Upper School student who demonstrates superior academic achievement, leadership and athletic ability.
• The Edgewood Scholarship Fund also offers financial aid to an Upper School student who demonstrates superior academic achievement, leadership and athletic ability and is also open to anyone who would like to donate. Chris Teter ’74, the founding donor of the Teter Family Scholarship, believes strongly in supporting scholarships as a way to attract outstanding students in the Roanoke Valley and encourages others to do the same: “My wife, Fran and I believe strongly in supporting independent education. We wanted to fund a scholarship to help attract outstanding student athletes to North Cross School. I challenge my fellow alumni to give back to North Cross and help provide others with the same quality education that you received.” As of June 30, 2016, a total of $932,019 constitutes the principle in our endowment for all our endowed scholarships. A percentage of the earnings is distributed to students based on the criteria established by the Board’s Investment Committee. The admissions and financial aid team then make these annual awards to students who apply and meet the specifics of the scholarship. Separately, our financial assistance program, Tailored Tuition, offers financial assistance to prospective applicants based on a family’s ability to pay. Many factors are taken into account when determining a family’s tuition responsibility, including income, assets, unusual expenses, and the size of the family. The process for Tailored Tuition begins when applications are submitted directly to a third-party agency, School and Student
Services (SSS). SSS evaluates the application based on criteria set by the school and makes an award recommendation. In the 2015-16 academic year, Tailored Tuition awards totaled $1,171,218, allowing us to extend a North Cross education to those who would

Because Tailored Tuition is a need-based assistance program, it is separate from our merit-based scholarships. To help us achieve our mission of creating global citizens and life-long learners, we need to attract students from many backgrounds but who have one goal in common: to receive an excellent college preparatory education which fosters personal integrity, empathy, and responsibility to self and community. Your gift of an endowed scholarship can help make that mission possible. Gifts to fund existing or new scholarships can be made to the school as cash, marketable securities, or through planned gifts as part of your estate plan. r
