Letter from the Head of School

Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D.

“A wise man once told me that ‘Generosity is not an act, it is a spirit,’ and this Honor Roll of Giving is testimony to our spirit.”

It has been an outstanding year at North Cross School, a year marked by a tremendous graduating class, continued growth in enrollment, continued renovation of our playing fields, and the exciting re-imagination of the central portion of our campus. Taken individually, any of these are achievements worthy of pride, but taken together, they are strong evidence that something really remarkable is happening at North Cross School. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support and commitment of our families. Last year was also a noteworthy year for charitable giving at North Cross. Not only did we reach our Annual Fund goal, we also exceeded our fundraising goals for both the Winter Gala & Auction and the Big Flea. This ‘triple play’ was a first during my tenure, and when coupled with our success in raising funds for the dedication of Willis Field, we once more see evidence of the remarkable. A wise man once told me that “Generosity is not an act, it is a spirit,” and this Honor Roll of Giving is testimony to our spirit.

When you work at North Cross, it is easy to see how our generous spirit plays a distinct role in the classroom but sometimes I hear parents ask “How is my gift used?” The easy answer is “Everywhere,” as no part of the school goes untouched by your charitable gifts. But, to be a bit more specific, we raised $135,000 last year to completely renew and rename our game field. This past fall, we raised $250,000 for need-based scholarships as part of the new Virginia State Educational Tax Credit program. Paddles Up at our Gala provided an extra $17,000 for faculty professional development and a portion of the Annual Fund allowed us to purchase the technology necessary to take the next step in our STEM initiative. If you don’t believe it makes a difference, you only need to come on campus and watch our Lower Schoolers programming a robotic mouse to follow a chalked course they drew on the sidewalk. Coding does not start this young without your generous spirit.

RIGHT: The Lower School Garden was officially dedicated this year. Lower School students work and learn in the garden and sample vegetables they have grown, such as beets, turnips, radishes, spinach, and salad greens.

Our generous spirit and wise stewardship of our resources have allowed North Cross to firmly establish itself as a “good” school. In fact, I firmly believe that we are the best school in the Valley and our increasing stature finds us being recognized this past year for our innovative programs by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), and the National Business Officers Association (NBOA). All of that is well and good, but I want to remain mindful of one of the lessons Jim Collins taught us in his book, Good to Great. Amazingly this book is 16 years old, but in it, he cautioned us that ‘good’ can be the enemy of ‘great.’ We need to recognize that our goodness as an institution can dampen our desire to keep improving. No matter how good we get, we must remember that greatness remains tantalizingly close and only by continued chase can we hope to catch it.

I am as confident as ever that we will achieve greatness at North Cross School and that Roanoke deserves a great independent school. Given what I consider to be a relatively small number of truly great schools and my appreciation for the difficulties associated with achieving such status, my confidence can rightfully be questioned. But, when I see the hard work of our parent volunteers, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the generosity of our spirit, I can’t help but think that greatness is only a matter of time. Many of you are aware that we are in the beginning stages of creating a capital campaign designed to provide us with the facilities necessary for greatness. All of our early indications for charitable giving reaffirm this past year’s generosity of spirit. We are working in good faith with our architects, a faith that says we will get done what needs to get done. This will be a transformational campaign for North Cross, a transformation we have not seen since the campus was established at this location more than 50 years ago. We will continue to work as hard in the future to create greatness as we have worked in the past to cement our identity as good.

It is an exciting time to be at North Cross School. In fact, I have heard somewhere that there has never been a better time to be at North Cross. Beyond the tagline, we remain fortunate to be part of a talented and generous community—a community committed to making each child the best that he or she can be. Thank you all for your part in making North Cross a better place for our children. No matter how large or small your donation; whether your donation was time, talent, or treasure; you make a difference. Sincerely,

Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D. Head of School

The arts programming at North Cross can not be summarized by an event or two. It is all around us, every day: the echos in the dining hall from band practice; paintings in Logan Gallery as students walk to morning assembly in Fishburn; amazing student singers, musicians, dancers and actors performing while we sip coffee at the FOTA Coffeehouse; or third, fourth and fifth graders putting on a musical so polished that it prompts audience members to whisper “She’s only eleven!?” We are not only fortunate to have such a dedicated arts program, staff, and volunteers, but also to have such talented and creative students grace our hallways every day.

student singers were selected for the Virginia Choral Director Association’s All District Choir.

The Upper School Spring Musical, Aida, was a great success. Along with the Lower School Musical, and the winter theatrical production, our theatre arts offer plenty of opportunities for our stars to shine.

The Friends of the Arts hosted a Coffeehouse event in November to feature and support student artists. The event raised over $5,800, as well as the additional $630 needed to complete the sale of a Yamaha Baby Grand Piano for the music department.

The piece above, created by Ben Li ‘18, won an honorable mention in the Sister Cities International art competition. The fourth-grade Marimba Monkees and the fifth-grade Magic Monkees recorded their first CD of African Latin music in the spring, with the hlep of Lower School music teacher, Richard Rudolph.

Character counts. We expect our students to be a contributing part of the community beyond our walls. Whether it’s jumping rope to raise money for the American Heart Association, asking for donations for a peanut butter and jelly drive, or cleaning up an area neighborhood side by side with a school who has historically been our arch rival, our students learn to appreciate what it means to make a meaningul impact in life. Community service starts in the Lower School with on-campus activities to bring awareness of the needs around us. In Middle School, students leave campus to perform two full days of service for various organizations, as shown below at the Roanoke Valley SPCA.

Families provided with Thanksgiving Meals

Dr. Terrell Strayhorn spoke to middle- and upperschool students, as well as faculty, staff, and guests, about black history and the importance of education as a vehicle to confidence, change, and enlightenment. Dr. Strayhorn is founder and CEO of Do Good Work Educational Consulting, LLC, a private education research firm.

This fall, in an effort to expand our Honor Code beyond the classroom, the Lower School gathered together to hear from coaches and Upper School Athletes on the importance of sportsmanship in athletics and in life. The Sportsmanship Code rests upon three tenants: “I will play fair. I will try my best. I will be kind to everyone.” Upper school athletes discussed the importance of fairness in a game, being gracious when things don’t go your way, being kind to your teammates and opponents, being respectful to coaches and referees, and setting an example of good sportsmanship for others. Each Lower School student had the opportunity to sign the Sportsmanship Code poster, which was then hung in the practice gym for the year.

It was a big year for the Girls Varsity Tennis team. In their first year of eligibility, they took home the State Championship title, while also defending their BRC Championship title, once again coming in first in the conference. The team was led strongly by Emma Cartledge ‘18 who was named BRC Player of the Year. Coach Amy Bagliani was also recognized and named both BRC Coach of the Year and State Coach of the Year.

1VISAA D-II State Championship (Girls V. Tennis) 7Conference Championship Titles 2 Coaches of the Year (Baglianai & Judge) The North Cross School athletic program is based on the knowledge that a well-exercised, competitive young person can learn about himself or herself on the athletic field in a way difficult to match in other areas of school life. The development of the complete person is the goal of both the faculty and students at North Cross and that goal is enthusiastically pursued in our athletic program. The 2016-17 school year was a winning example of our student athletes’ dedication to sportsmanship and skill with a number of conference and state championship titles for all three seasons.

Both the Boys and Girls Swim Teams won their conference championship titles, Girls Varsity Cross Country finished first in their conference, and Boys Varsity Soccer celebrated their VIC Championship title.

Rich McGimsey ‘82 was awarded the MuscaroSatterwhite Award for his service and dedication to the Girls’ Lacrosse program for the past 6 years. Former North Cross Athletic Director and Coach, Donna Satterwhite, was inducted into the VISAA Hall of Fame. Donna achieved several athletic milestones during her time at North Cross. As a coach, she led her teams to eight softball conference championships, eight volleyball conference championships, many undefeated seasons, and won the first ever independent school state vol23 leyball title in 1994.

North Cross students have many opportunities to learn in the multitude of “classrooms” we make available. Whether collaborating on the playing field, making friends with a senior buddy, listening to a fellow student’s DeHart speech, or travelling to another country, there is no shortage of ways North Cross redefines the classroom.

In June, a group of Upper School students, led by teacher Victor Lamas, traveled to Luquino, Peru, a village on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The students helped the residents of the village, completing jobs such as constructing and decorating a pathway. They also had the chance to enjoy some historic sites like Machu Picchu.

4 33 North Cross fifth graders, with the help of Lindsay McKinnon, formed a pen pal program and wrote letters to Zimbabwean students.

Beyond

Argentinian students spent 4 weeks at North Cross taking courses in history, science, English, and current U.S. Affairs and assisting in Spanish classes.

North Cross recently began a new chapter, offering boarding services for the first time in the school’s history. The dormitory is located in the first few floors of the newly renovated historic Boxley Building on Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke. With room and board available for 24 full-time students, North Cross School will be able to house current—and attract new—boarding students in grades 9-12, international students with F-1 visas and regional high school students wishing to attend and graduate from North Cross.

North Cross recently celebrated its first commencement at North Cross - Xinhe School. Fifteen graduates participated in an Americanstyle graduation ceremony. Valedictorian Carly Lin discussed plans to attend the University of Virginia.
