NOTE
SUMMER CHECK-IN While most people are now on summer break, spending days at the pool, parks and going on vacation, family members of the two teachers and 19 children who were killed in the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas are struggling with the grief and pain of losing their loved ones. However, the tragedy that occurred has impacted all of us, including our children, who might have heard about what happen from not only their parents, but from friends and social media platforms. It may seem we should all be well-equipped for the changing world events due to the pandemic years, but we are not. In fact, as a parent, I was at a loss for words when my 13-year-old and 15-yearold asked questions after they learned about the shooting in Uvalde. Dr. Kate Eshleman, pediatric psychologist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, says it’s less common for kids to hear about other kids dying. “There’s a variety of reactions,” she says. “A lot depends on the child, some may be a matter-of-fact, acknowledge it’s sad, while others experience anxiety or fear of being safe.” She suggests meeting your child where they are (developmentally) as each have different coping styles. For parents, we are more closely connected with these tragic events, each of us having our own feelings as well as questions about the safety and well-being for our kids and family. “I think it’s very appropriate if something happens for parents to identify their own feelings,” Eshleman says. “Show (your kids) how you cope with (feelings of sadness) and model appropriate coping.” As we go through this summer, it’s a reminder to have check-ins with your child. She suggests having a good idea of what content they are watching, ask specific questions about popular posts and try to engage them in a conversation. “Periodically check in and ask them if anything has been worrying them, did anything good happen, make these questions a regular part of the family conversation,” she adds. It’s not just kids who need support, but also us, as parents. The season allows us to reset and take a few minutes for our mental health. Eshleman suggests parents to take time to work out, check in with friends — and for kids, if sadness shows up the door, find activities, like having an ice cream night, go to a playground or movie. “Engaging in a fun activity is a good approach,” she says and notes, to always watch for changes, in your child (or yourself). If there’s a change in patterns or increasing irritability, to investigate further and get help, if needed. In this issue, we tried to do just that — and provide ideas on how to have fun together, finally. So, hug your kids a little tighter, and everyone you love. Editor’s Extras: We are so excited to show you the winners and finalists of your picks for 2022 Parent Choice Awards. Thank you to our readers who participated in the voting fun!

H
ROSIE REVERE, ENGINEER
One of my favorite quotes from the book is “The only true failure can come if you quit.” This book encourages creativity and reinforces a growth mindset to help us all become lifelong learners. AFTER THE FALL: HOW HUMPTY DUMPTY GOT BACK UP AGAIN by Dan Santat
Who doesn’t know the story of Humpty Dumpty? But do you know the story of what happened to him ‘after the fall’? Our failures don’t define us. Humpty Dumpty shows us that those who get back up after their failures and find the courage to try again can challenge themselves to be more than they ever imagined. THE MOST MAGNIFICENT THING by Ashley Spires
This is an adorable book about a young girl and her best friend, her dog. She wants to create the “most magnificent thing.” In the end, she learns about the satisfaction of perseverance.

SPARK YOUR CHILD’S INTEREST IN LEARNING THESE INNOVATIVE SKILLS. By Kristen Antosh Looking for ways to foster a STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) mindset at home? After your child signs up for your local library’s summer reading program, encourage them to check out some STEAM books! STEAM books not only improve literacy skills in children, they can also boost your child’s innate curiosity and will expose them to the vast, exciting world of science. Let your child’s interests lead the way! Our family loves checking out STEAM books. Below are some of our favorites, because they inspire skills like problem solving, growth mindset, creativity, imagination, and logical thinking. All these skills help children become lifelong learners, which results in high success in life.
ORDINARY PEOPLE CHANGE THE WORLD BOOK SERIES by Brad Meltzer and illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos
This book series is about ordinary people who follow their dreams, beliefs, and ambitions to change the world. The stories are about the challenges they faced and how they persevered through them. The PBS Kids show ‘Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum’ is also based on this series of books. IF I BUILT SERIES
by Chris Van Dusen
If I built a school, a car, and a house is a book series based on the incredibly playful imagination of a boy named Jack. There is no limit to his imagination or creativity. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH AN IDEA? by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom
Sometimes our ideas are brilliant and work out just as we planned. But sometimes they don’t, and we learn from them. This book explores the story of a child with a brilliant idea and how it was brought into the world. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A PROBLEM? by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom
Our world is full of problems that need solutions. Sometimes a problem can seem so big that we don’t know how to solve it. This story is about a boy who encounters just that. We learn about what happens as he avoids it, and the result of his courage once he faces it. BEAUTIFUL OOPS
by Barney Saltzberg This book is absolutely beautifully illustrated for children, and it teaches them that every mistake is an opportunity to be more inventive and creative.

READING ROOM I COLOR MYSELF DIFFERENT
Editor ’s BOOK PICK
By Colin Kaepernick, illustrated by Eric Wilkerson One day in school, Colin’s teacher asks the children to draw what their families look like. “This is going to be easy,” Colin tells himself. “I have the best family ever.” But when he shows his drawing to his classmates, one asks: “Why are you the only brown one in your family?” Another adds: “Why did you color yourself different?” Colin freezes. What happens next, and how his classmates and teacher respond, turns their awkward questions into a joyful affirmation. (Based on a true event from Kaepernick’s childhood.) — Janet Cho

Un-Plug with Dad on Father’s Day WHILE THERE ARE PLENTY OF VIRTUAL OPTIONS FOR GAMER DADS, TRY THESE UNIQUE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR GAMES WITH A STRATEGIC TWIST By Lou Harry When gift buying for Dad, shareable activities can mean hours of fun well beyond Father’s Day. When it comes to games, pick one that’s too complex and younger players may get frustrated and opt out. Pick one that’s too luck-based and the game can get boring quickly. For other activities, physical ability and just plain life experience and knowledge can be a barrier to fun. We tested dozens of indoor and outdoor games to find ones with just enough depth and just enough luck to keep Dad looking forward to the next round and the kids engaged. And we threw in some puzzles as well. We didn’t include recommended ages because that can vary wildly. You know what your kids can handle.

When to take it inside: In the two-level Mountains Out of Molehills (The Op Games), players first draft directional cards and then play them in sequence to move moles in the underground area. The space where each mole finishes its move causes a corresponding bump above ground, increasing the size of the molehill there. Large hills can mean big points – but going too high causes them to topple and increase the size of neighboring molehills. Some adults may remember Jarts, that now-notorious game that was banned because of the dangers of throwing things that have heavy metal tips. Well, safer versions are now available including Lawn Darts (Funsparks), which glow in the dark so the fun can continue after the sun goes down.

Try Kubb (available from multiple manufacturers). It’s a bit oversimplifying to say that it’s all about throwing batons to knock over wooden blocks but that’s the essence of this lawn game. That some say date back to Viking times but is more likely to have been launched in the 1980s. Prefer puzzles? Ravensburger has a terrific line of options ranging from 24 pieces up to a thousand. The latter’s Villainous line celebrates Disney baddies, with individual puzzles dedicated to Maleficent, Jafar, Scar and more. And for 3D challenges, your team can build replicas of the Chrysler Building, Big Ben, and the Eiffel Tower.

Value of Learning About Money TEACHING YOUR KIDS THE SKILLS OF FINANCIAL LITERACY PROVIDES A NON-TRADITIONAL EDUCATION APPROACH
By Georgia Lattas
A
s summertime approaches, many teens and kids will be dog-sitting, running a lemonade stand, or working a parttime job. As your child starts making their own money, it is important to teach them the skills needed to make informed financial decisions. Viktoria Jurkovic of the Division of Financial Institutions at the Ohio Department of Commerce walks parents through the importance of financial literacy and how to educate your children on these important skills. Children are constantly watching and listening and they can absorb so much from adults, so it is important to be open and honest in conversations about money. “The more that you think out loud and the more that you have these
12 | Family Living at Its Best
conversations with your kids, the more appreciative they will be about it,” Jurkovic says. “One of the biggest things I hear adults say is ‘My parents never talked about money.’ Financial literacy is about understanding where money comes from, how much you have, and where you’re going to spend it efficiently. That’s really the big picture.” “Financial literacy is an all-encompassing way of assuring that individuals are able to make good financial decisions that will benefit their financial health,” she adds. “It is a process of understanding the dynamics and the value of money, and then being able to make the best decisions based on their personal positioning.”
START EARLY
Kids should be taught financial literacy skills starting around age 3, about how to budget and how to plan for the future, but also about decision-making and being wiser with resources. “When we start to infiltrate the ways that we teach kids at a younger age, they start to appreciate and value money a little bit better,” Jurkovic says. “They also are at an age where they start to model the behavior that’s around them. So when you are playing store with your preschooler, and you explain you have to buy the vegetable, that is where the value of money is being displayed.” Kids naturally will obtain financial literacy skills through modeled behav- CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 -

ior. Children can learn some of these skills at school, but having these conversations at home is most valuable. For example, she says if you’re planning a birthday party for your kid, and you’re shopping around, talk about the process of what you’re thinking. Talk out loud so they can understand your decision-making process, and they can benefit from hearing the reasoning behind what you’re doing with your money, she says. TEACHING TEENS TO SAVE
For teens and kids who will be earning a paycheck, it is important to help them be responsible with their income and to be open and honest about financial decision-making skills. “Maybe set up some type of a kid’s savings account,” Jurkovic says. “For teens who will be working a part-time job, explain to them that the check they will be taking home may be smaller than anticipated due to taxes.” Jurkovic says it is important to be transparent and have open conversations. Start with a simple budget and save up for a goal — such as a vacation with friends or an expensive gaming system. Kids can then start to put away a little bit of what they earn for long-term savings, etc. “Having this conversation with them is important, because we don’t want teens to get a job, make money, and then splurge it the minute they have it,” Jurkovic says. SUMMER LESSONS
While some kids may start earning an income this summer, Jurkovic says it is up to the family to decide if the child needs to start paying their phone bill, contribute to
14 | Family Living at Its Best
grocery bills, etc. Having your child pay a bill can help them become more financially responsible. “Maybe you can have your child pitch in $20 each check they receive, and then give it back to them down the road,” Jurkovic says. “At the same time, taking the $20 from them each paycheck still teaches them a lesson. Reassure them that they are contributing and helping.” For younger kids who may want to hold a lemonade stand or bake sale or yard sale, help them devise a plan. Ask them: ‘If it’s a bake sale, what is the cost of your ingre-
dients?’ ‘How are you going to get those ingredients?’ ‘What are you going to sell them for?’ ‘When you make profit from this, what are your plans with the money?’ ‘Why do you feel like you want more money right now?’ “If you are thinking about having a yard sale, maybe sell some items on eBay or another platform and have the child contribute,” Jurkovic says. “Have them take the pictures, have them write the descriptions, have them do the purchasing research, etc. It is a good way to have the child feel responsible for facilitating something.”

Bring Your Own Milk Jug… Aisha Taylor of FNPhenomenal shares Milk Jug Bird Feeder “This is one I (shared) with my twins,” she says.

. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED: One clean plastic gallon milk jug
(keep the top on)
HERE’S WHAT YOU DO: Cut the circles on the side of the milk
jug open. Try to do this so the cutouts are smooth. Paint the milk jug. To hang it up, either poke two holes in the lid or on the sides near the top of the jug. Thread a strong string in between the two holes and fasten the string together. Fill the bottom with bird seed.

Kristen Antosh of “Momgineering the Future” shares her Color Changing Butterfly Pea Tea “This delicious, beautiful, color changing sweet tea is sure to be the highlight of your kid party this summer. Butterfly pea flowers have a special property that makes them great pH indicators. The flowers pigment changes color depending on the pH of whatever it is mixed with. You can make this sweetened tea up to three days in advance.” HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
4 cups of water Small handful of dried butterfly pea flowers 1/2 cup of sugar 4 – 16 ounce glasses filled with ice Juice from 2 lemons (1/2 lemon for each glass of tea) HERE’S WHAT YOU DO: Boil 4 cups of
water (we used a teapot). Transfer the boiling water to a pyrex or heat resistant bowl or measuring cup. Add the dried butterfly pea flowers to the hot water. Let the flowers steep for about 5 minutes. The longer it steeps the darker blue the tea will become. Remove the flowers. To sweeten it up, add the sugar to the hot butterfly pea tea. Mix the sugar so that it dissolves fully. If you do not plan to serve it immediately, place the sweetened tea in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve, pour the sweetened tea in each ice filled glass. This is where the magic happens! Let children pour the lemon juice into their glass of butterfly tea. The lemon juice will change the tea’s color from dark blue to a beautiful purple because of its high acid level. Drink and enjoy. Makes four 16 ounce iced filled glasses of tea.
Bonus:
To create a more dramatic color change, first pour the light yellow lemon juice into the glass, and then pour the dark blue sweetened butterfly pea tea over top. Watch as the colors change from yellow to purple almost instantly.

325 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a muffin tin with baking cups. In a large bowl, mix honey, avocado oil, and eggs. Add in the mashed bananas, grated zucchini, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix well. On the side, combine the dry ingredients — the cinnamon, flour, salt, baking soda. Add into the wet mixture and mix until just combined. DO NOT overmix. Optional: add in blueberries or other add-ins. Suggestions include dried cherries or chocolate chips. I added blueberries to a few, but not all, of the muffins. Divide the batter evenly among 12 muffin cups. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the muffin comes out clean. Mine took about 24 minutes. Cool muffins and then enjoy. I like to keep six out and then freeze six, so I have individual muffins ready to go whenever.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
1/2 cup butter, softened 2/3 cup light brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup fine graham cracker crumbs 1 cup marshmallow cream 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips HERE’S WHAT YOU DO: Preheat the
oven to 350º F, and line an 8”x8” baking dish with parchment paper or foil. In a medium bowl, mix the baking soda, salt, flour, and graham cracker crumbs. Set aside. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together the butter and brown sugar, then mix in the egg and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add dry mixture to wet mixture, and mix until dough forms. Press three-quarters of the dough into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread marshmallow cream over top of dough with a spatula sprayed with cooking spray (to prevent too much sticking). Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the marshmallow cream, then press remaining cookie dough over top of the chocolate chips. Bake for 20 minutes, and let cool before cutting and serving. Prep Time: 20 min Cook Time: 20 min Total Time: 40 min Makes 9 servings

Dad
MATTERS
Ditching Your Training Wheels I never learned how to ride a bicycle. My parents weren’t negligent or anything. They’d mortgage the house (again) to support their kids’ weird, expensive interests. But I never asked them to teach me, and they never suggested it. I didn’t feel deprived, either, because I couldn’t balance on a bike. But then I had kids. It’s hard enough to teach children something you know how to do. Potty training was agony, and I’m an expert at not peeing on myself. (I mean … nobody’s perfect.) Now my children wanted me to teach them how to ride a bike, when I had no clue how to do that. I might as well teach them French or quantum physics. But parenting is one long experiment with getting comfortable outside of your comfort zone. So my kids got bikes, and I figured we’d learn by doing. Turns out “learning by doing” involves a lot of bleeding. In particular, my son fell a lot. And every time my kid toppled to the sidewalk, it felt like an indictment of my parenting. If I were a better father – if I’d bothered to learn this now crucial skill – my son wouldn’t have bruises on his arms and abrasions on his calves. After each fall, he’d look at me – frustrated – and ask, “What did I do wrong?” I couldn’t instruct, so I retreated into risk prevention. I tightened his safety wheels, told him to go slower, and suggested he wear elbow pads in addition to his helmet. But here’s the thing about biking – and it may be the only thing I know about biking. You need momentum. If you pump the brakes every six feet, you’re going to fall. And the more you fall, the more you’ll pump the brakes. You spiral into self doubt. Soon another summer has passed, and you still have your training wheels on. Of course, we all have to parent defensively sometimes. If we didn’t, our kids would all shove forks into electrical outlets. But our children don’t grow when we teach them to be scared. They might learn, but they don’t grow.
So this spring, my son brought his bike back out. By now, his training wheels groaned like Deebo’s clutch. I was nervous. He tried not to notice how nervous I was. Instead, he kept pedaling. He’d lap the block over and over – sometimes returning with a new bruise. Then one day, he parked his Genesis in front of our house and said, “Dad, I think I broke my bike.” I scanned his ride and realized he was missing one of his training wheels. I offered to go get it, but he said, “Dad, I don’t think I need it.” I argued. He insisted. Finally, he offered to prove it. He sped off – not wobbling at all. He was the most comfortable I’d ever seen him on his bike. After another lap, he convinced me to take off the other training wheel. We’ve never looked back. Occasionally, the universe sends me a blatant metaphor. I needed to take off my own training wheels. Because sometimes, the mechanisms we use to protect our kids are what limit them. In the end, I didn’t need to learn how to ride a bike. I needed to learn (or remember) how to let my kid outgrow me. It’s going to happen again and again as they get older. They’ll accumulate skills I never dreamed of having. And I don’t have to master French or quantum physics for them to learn. What I need is to encourage them (and, every so often, keep them from tumbling into a well.) That was a difficult lesson to learn, but I’ll never forget it. Just like riding a bike. Supposedly.
