Walden members. You’ll read stories worth sharing in this issue, within our regular departments, “Living the Life” and “Neighbor to Neighbor.” You will be refreshed by splashes of Henry David Thoreau quotes sprinkled throughout Walden Life magazine, since it is his classic work, “Walden - A Life in the Woods,” which inspired our Walden in Aurora. Thoreau’s “Walden” recounts his time of living with nature in simplicity while residing near Walden Pond in Massachusetts in the mid-1800s. Today, we are blessed with this gift of dwelling in concert with the environment, thanks to Thoreau and Manny’s vision to harmonize community with nature. The team responsible for producing Walden Life magazine considers this a passion project for many reasons. Walden is where we live, recreate, build relationships, find peace with nature and thrive. Learn more about the talented people behind Walden Life on the adjacent page. Walden Life is produced independently by Mitchell Media, LLC and could not be accomplished successfully without the tremendously helpful cooperation of Walden. Worth Noting
DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that the golf course nines were flipped in 2008? Mitch Camp, Walden’s Club Director of Golf, says the reason for this was because now the finishing holes are much more enjoyable and memorable than the previous nine. Ideally, the finishing holes should leave a pleasing lasting impression as you depart the course.
Happy Birthday to Walden’s Walking Path! The walking path we all enjoy just celebrated its 20th birthday. The path was built in 2000, following two years of preparatory committee work. The walking path takes you all the way through Walden, from entrance to entrance. Along the paved path, you will encounter many residents and dogs who also enjoy the ponds, trees and wildlife surrounding the beautiful throughway.

Tee Time By now you can now see the light at the end of winter’s long, cold tunnel. Soon the birds will be chirping and you can ditch those boots for flip flops. With the arrival of leaves and beautiful weather, the golfers will emerge from their hiatus, and once again, bring the Walden golf course to life. If your clubs aren’t the only things feeling a bit rusty, there Golf Pro Gus Mehallis are some things you can do to prepare yourself and your swing for golf season. Walden resident, PGA Golf Professional and former Aurora High School Boys’ Golf Coach Gus Mehallis shares some tips for getting yourself and your swing ready for opening day. He jokingly says your best option is to go South for the winter and play golf, but if that’s not on your agenda: Stretching is very important for golfers over the winter and every time before hitting or playing. Be sure to stretch all of your muscles. n

NEWS The Following Two Pages Are Brought to You by Club Walden
WALDEN UPDATES For over five decades, generations of members have relied on Club Walden for a bounty of fond family memories and experiences. From a round of golf, swim meets for the kids, round robin tennis, to holiday gatherings and family reunions, special memories are made at Club Walden. This past year has given us time to think about the Club and what opportunities there might be to stay relevant today and tomorrow. After much internal discussion and careful consideration, we have a few exciting announcements to make!
THE BARN
Architectural renderings of the new Clubhouse deck
We are so fortunate to be able to offer the Barn Dining Club to our members. No other club offers both the Barn’s level of exquisite dining quality and such a unique venue. Towards this end, we feel it is time to give the space some new legs and redecorate! The new design pays homage to the Barn’s roots, while bringing it into 2021 and beyond. We have selected a fresh palette and emphasized the equestrian background that is a pillar in the Walden landscape.
THE CLUBHOUSE 2020 gave us the opportunity to expand our outdoor dining, and we intend to continue to add to this with a substantial addition to the Clubhouse.
We have always had two bars, but at times, the front bar just wasn’t big enough. Our members migrated to the Bogey Bar for the warmth of the space and camaraderie. This pushed us to consider options that might also provide an appealing space to unwind. We reached out to the wellrespected AoDK Architecture firm with questions to create a new and exciting chapter for the Club. As you will soon see, we are adding a new deck with access from the mixed grill. There are stairs leading to the ladies’ locker room and cart staging area for easy access. Fire pits will enhance conversing and dining, including an outdoor bar with clear viewing inside, should you care to watch a sporting event on the television.
We are optimistic that, with the Covid-19 vaccine’s growing availability, restrictions of social distancing will soon be a thing of the past, and that we can unveil the changes by Memorial Day 2021. We are very excited about this next chapter of the Club and we continue to make enhancements to the membership.
Contact Heather Thoman, heather@yourwalden.com or at 330.995.3104 to learn more about our dining, sport and golf memberships. 20

Junior Golf at Walden Here at Walden we are starting to think about golf for your little ones in 2021. We plan on having more junior golf clinics this summer with two different age groups, PeeWee (4-9) and Junior (10+). These clinics will be led by our Director of Instruction Rick Zivsak, with a calendar of junior clinics sent out to the membership in March as well as sign-ups on ForeTees. This is a great way to introduce juniors to the game of golf, as well as meet new friends. If your junior does not have a set of clubs, that is no problem at all. We have plenty of junior clubs here they can use, and our goal is to keep the game fun! We were so happy to see participation numbers in these clinics reach over 50+ juniors last year, which has us wanting to do more for junior golf here at Walden. In addition to adding more clinics throughout the summer, creating a calendar, and easy sign-ups on ForeTees, we would like to try and make changes to our PGA Jr. League, as well. Last year we had
14 children participate on our junior league team. This year we hope to get a minimum of 24 juniors to sign up. That way, we will be able to hold our own in-house league here at Walden. One of the positives behind this is that we will hold all of our matches here at Walden, and will not have to schedule outside matches or travel to other clubs. The PGA Jr. League is open to both boys and girls, 13 and under,
of all skill levels and abilities. The minimum age is 6 years old and the child must not be older than 13 years old on or before the season start date (June 1st). Sign-ups for the PGA Jr. League are now open on ForeTees! “From all of us on the Walden Golf Staff, we cannot wait to see you for the 2021 golf season.” — Collin McEndree, PGA Head Golf Professional

Tennis at Club Walden Serve Up an Ace on Our HAR-TRU Courts The tennis season typically opens in mid-May, weather permitting, on our four beautiful HAR-TRU clay courts located off of Country Club Lane next to the pool. The Club Walden tennis program is led by USPTA Elite Certified Professional Tim Morgan. Tim and his teaching staff provide programs for all levels of play. Our adult program focuses on weekly event match play opportunities, group instruction, and monthly special events. Our junior tennis clinic program is well received by the membership and provides quality instruction to its member participants. The program is constantly growing and is a racquet sport for the entire family to enjoy. Proper tennis attire is required and we register all guests in advance. For lessons, program placement, or for information regarding tennis opportunities, contact Tim at 440.479.1690.

Walden Farms I asked Manny what inspired him to develop Walden Farms nearby and why he chose white as the exclusive design color. He said this concept was inspired by a picture of a house he saw in a newspaper… a simple line drawing by Hugh Newell Jacobsen. Manny met with Jacobsen to share his vision for Walden Farms. Manny then worked with Cleveland architect John Terence Kelly — a “very unique and talented individual” — to interpret the design. Kelly designed Inn Walden and the first homes at Walden Farms in the ‘90s. The color white complements the simplicity of the architectural designs, all inspired by the historic Western Reserve style inherent to this region. To Manny, the reasoning was as simple as the aesthetic: “This was always a farm; why not maintain the beauty of the farm?” Manny thought that horses would be a magnificent and fitting backdrop for this pastoral scene — strikingly different from the golf course — enhancing the simple grandeur of Walden Farms. “Simplicity is very important,” Manny explained. “You can’t beat a piece of glass and a tree. No architect can do better than a piece of glass and a tree.”

and advertising professional for a New York City magazine, Bonnie had a secretary who happened to be Manny’s daughter. When Bonnie and Manny got married, Inn Walden and the spa were works in progress. Bonnie got involved in visualizing the spa and also served as the Inn Walden PR director for 20 years. As such, Bonnie played an integral role in helping Inn Walden and Spa Walden gain national recognition in major magazines. Both Bonnie Lane and Rainbow’s End are located in Walden Farms. Manny wins some points by naming Bonnie Lane after his wife. Bonnie named Rainbow’s End because “at the end of the rainbow is a pot of gold.”
Inn Walden and Spa Walden Built in 1997, Inn Walden and Spa Walden are nationally acclaimed. Spa Walden has no locker rooms; every suite has its own bathroom, steam shower and whirlpool. Couples’ suites have fireplaces. Guests are given a cushion of time — before and after — to relax. The Barenholtzes’ daughter, Barrie, has been instrumental in bringing Spa Walden to national attention. Again, Manny and Bonnie’s travels served as inspiration — both pro and con — as they considered the “little things that go a long way.” Manny and Bonnie had visited many spas where they were discouraged by a lack of privacy; this was counterintuitive to Manny. He wanted to relax after his massage but management wanted him up and out. On the upside, the Barenholtzes stayed at a hotel in Canada where they were greeted every morning with a newspaper and muffins hanging in a basket outside their door. They have replicated this charming custom at Inn Walden. It’s appreciated by the many celebrities who CONTINUED PAGE 34 MARCH / APRIL 2021

GARDENING
(L to R): Thyme, Rosemary, Sage and Mint
By Estelle Rodis-Brown Springtime means gardening! Finally, we’ve shaken off the cold, grey blanket of winter. As Northeast Ohio warms into longer days, we can revel in the celebration of sunshine and soil, tending to colorful annuals, lush perennials, aromatic herbs and nourishing vegetables. While having a large garden may require more time and commitment than you want to invest, you can enjoy the aesthetic benefits of gardening without the downsides of backbreaking toil (turning the soil, weeding, etc.) if you opt for container gardening. Planting in decorative pots is a convenient and satisfying method of beautifying your front entryway, patio, deck, balcony or window from Spring to Fall. Containers are also great for gardeners who can’t bend down to 26

the ground. A container can raise the plant by at least a foot, depending on its height, enabling you to sit or stand to tend to the plant and its yield. Containers also keep you from overdoing it; just choose a few plants instead of investing in flat after flat of seedlings. Think beyond flowers. As long as you get at least five hours of sunshine in your chosen spot, you can enjoy your own vegetable and/or herb harvest. With the right container and a little bit of time devoted to watering and fertilizing, nothing beats the just-picked freshness and flavor of wonderful, homegrown vegetables and scented herbs. First, however, consult with your condo association or homeowners association before you dig in, as you may need to get an application approved by your board and the architectural committee.

“The Walden Association includes approximately 100 free-standing homes in the homeowners association and over 500 addresses in the condominium associations,” explains Gina Ehrhart, Committee Chair on the Walden Architectural Committee. “The homeowners association is run differently than the condo associations and land use allowances vary, with 15 different condo associations and differing bylaws. Some might be fine with container gardens on patios and decks while others might take into consideration the weight of the containers and if they compromise the support structure, particularly if they are duplex or triplex condos.” Whatever your plan, start by selecting the best supplies and plants for the job, and keep it simple. Select a container (when in doubt, buy the next size up), decide whether you’ll place it in sun or shade. Then choose what type of plants to grow that will flourish in that lighting. Sunshine and water will do the rest!

Walden’s Gardening Goddess
“There is nothing like the quiet moments in a garden. The actual act of planting and tending to a garden requires you to move your body in very functional ways. Gardening allows you to physically and mentally unplug from our world of technology and constant screen time. Your body moves with the pace of nature and your senses are heightened while working in the soil. Vitamin D deficiency is a huge problem for a lot of people, and early morning or late afternoon gardening can give us a safe and much-needed dose of this very important vitamin.” Danielle goes on to say that research proves the power of eating a wholefoods, plant-based diet, especially complemented by the many health benefits from added fresh herbs and spices. “In general, people who grow and cook their own food eat healthier,” Danielle shares. “One of the most basic and beneficial things we can teach our children is planting a garden — even
Danielle Dicesare, owner of Positive Image, has been the health and fitness trainer at Walden for 15 years. She provides sessions of weight training, yoga and interval training. Her yoga classes at the clubhouse and her exercise/nutrition coaching help clients to make long-lasting lifestyle changes that promote longevity and quality of life. Not surprisingly, Danielle has a green thumb with a penchant for growing healthy goodies in her garden containers. It’s all part of her holistic approach to wellness, which involves the body, mind and spirit. “Gardening gives a person an opportunity to connect to the earth, which can be a form of moving meditation,” she explains.

“Herbs are my favorite to have growing in the “potager,” everything from lovage to mint to herbs that last through the winter, like sage and thyme and perennial herbs like chives that reward you year after year!” Danielle says, “If you have herbs growing right outside your kitchen, you tend to clip them and throw them into your soups, sauces, salads, smoothies, ice teas and cocktails! It gives everything a flavor boost that adds vital vitamins and minerals to your meals.”
Specifically, Danielle advises, “Herbs are best for container planting and they look pretty mixed in pots or planters with spring bulbs, summer annuals and fall mums. Tomato plants work well for sunny decks, strawberries love pots as well as peppers — hot and sweet — to toss into summer salads! If you have a little more space, you could grow peas or pole beans on a trellis.” While wintertime had its contemplative benefits, Danielle is eager for the cold season to give way to the hot
sun’s nurturing rays. “Springtime in Cleveland is the awakening of all the things I love!” she enthuses. “Growing a garden and cooking from it is an act of love for the people you care about. It is the gift of health and a deep connection to our ancestors. It is a belief in tomorrow.” l

Living the Life
What Do You Love Most About Living in Walden? Kathi Grandillo
“
What I love most about living in Walden is the fact that there is something for people of all ages. Having moved here in 1989, raising a family with a full-time job, I can honestly say that through the ups and downs of everyday life, coming home was like a respite, and I have never considered living anywhere else. There are opportunities to get involved with your associations and Club Walden, take a walk along the walking path and meet new people, or you can just relax and enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of your surroundings.”

Nikki Zupancic
“
“
In a word, Walden has incredible character, making it a truly unique place to live and though there are plenty of characters living here, Cara and I have always felt welcome. Since moving here from Buffalo, we have made friends we know we will have for the rest of our lives and we are truly blessed to live with them in Walden!”
Pat Volpe
“
Walden’s beauty and unique design will never stop bringing new things to see or do, or new people to meet. Something for everyone.”
Being able to be surrounded by nature, yet enjoy all the pleasures of a community! The scenery is just as lovely as the people that live here. We feel truly blessed to have found such a hidden gem in such a fantastic little town and look forward to many more years of making memories with friends and neighbors.”

My favorite thing about living in Walden is the sense of calm I feel when I get home and how the outside world seems a bit further away. I can re-set, focus on being there for my kids, and still enjoy all the amenities this neighborhood has to offer.”

All in the Family: Three Generations at Walden Chris & Erica Gardner
Robert and Pauline Grodin
Robert & Pauline Grodin The late Robert and Pauline raised their family in Shaker Heights before moving to Walden in 1989. Robert played an integral part on the leadership team that developed the walking path. As his memorial rock along the Walden walking path says, “He helped to make Walden a more beautiful and better place to live.” Pauline and Robert loved the lifestyle and social aspect of Walden so much that it was worth the commute to Cleveland. Pauline loved playing golf and the couple could be seen dining frequently at the Club.
Following in the footsteps of Chris’ grandparents and parents, Chris and Erica Gardner moved to Walden from Columbus a decade ago. The Gardner family says that they have enjoyed 10 amazing years as part of the Walden community. Chris and Erica met at The Ohio State University and have been married for 20 years. They love music and their favorite spots in Walden include their deck in the summer and the Bogey Bar in the off-season. Chris specializes in textile sales and Erica, a former aesthetician, is now a full-time mom. Their daughter, Blake, age 12, can be seen golfing and swimming around Walden. Chris has always loved Walden and has wonderful childhood memories of visiting his grandparents here. He now embraces the serene natural landscape with Erica, Blake, their dog and two cats. Generation to generation, this family keeps the Walden tradition alive.
John & Barb Gardner Their daughter Barb and her husband John Gardner moved to Walden Farms from Beachwood. They chose Walden because they love the houses and the rural atmosphere. Barb says the best things about Walden are the “instant community” and the architecture. Barb earned a teaching degree and worked as a children’s and young adult librarian. She also worked at University Hospitals before working alongside John in his business as a textile rep for a textile manufacturing company. He holds a degree in textile science. 32

TO WALDEN WITH LOVE, MANNY & BONNIE
(Continued) have stayed at Inn Walden, including Donna Karan, Tony Bennett, Ben Vereen, Harry Connick Jr., Stephen Schwartz, Hal Linden and other singers, actors and fashion designers. Sometime before he designed Inn Walden and Walden Farms, Manny was visiting an Illinois horse facility, where the lounge overlooked an indoor arena in which a young girl was brushing her horse. Manny thought it was such a beautiful scene. “That left an impression on me,” he said. He kept that scene in mind as he designed Inn Walden with its own indoor arena. Inn Walden and Spa Walden have received many accolades, including being named one of America’s top 100 spas in 2018 by “American Spa Magazine.” Inn Walden received AAA’s prestigious Five Diamond Award; the only hotel in Ohio to receive this distinction.
Manny and Bonnie love seeing a growing influx of young families at Walden and how the amount of young children has grown. They find the wide range of age groups and the diverse group of residents at Walden a healthy sign. Manny said, “I am very proud of Walden; there is nothing quite like it. And I am especially grateful to Rob Rosencrans for picking up the mantle and taking Walden to greater heights.” Manny expresses that he has enjoyed a great career. But he’s not fooling me with his use of the past tense! It’s not over, Manny — I just saw you at a construction site! Thank you, Manny and Bonnie. We are truly enjoying what is here. Walden is a one-of-a-kind community, thanks to both of you.
