World, 10B BAGHDAD (ApjSunni militants captured a strategic city along the highwayto Syria on Monday, moving closer to their goal of linking areas under their control on both sides of the border. The gains come as Iranian-backed Shiite militias and thousands of volunteers joined security forces to prepare for what the prime minister has vowed to be a fight to liberate every inch of Iraqi territory. Tal Afar is dominated by ethnic Turkomen, who are both Sunni and Shiite, and is a key prize for the insurgents as it sits less than 100 miles from the Syrian border. The al-Qaida breakaway group leading the push in Iraq also is fighting in the civil war next door in Syria.

A proposed expansion of the Leo Adler Memorial Parkway secured a big boost in the wake of the Baker City Budget Committee hearings last month after officials set aside money to try to buy property near Wade Williams Elks Memorial Park. The budget committee added

$36,000tothe 2014-2015budgetto buy the property. City Manager Mike Kee said the long-termplan forthe property isto transformitinto a trailhead forthe Adler Parkway, a paved pedestrian and bicycl eroute thatstartsatthe north edge of the city at Hughes Lane and follows the Powder River south to its current terminus at Bridge Street. That's several blocks north of Wade Williams. While the property purchase near thepark,a Little League baseball complexthat'sjusteastoftheriver, will be a leap forward in terms of the future, a lot of work remains, Kee said. ''We'd have to come up with some sortofrouteto getfrom Bridge Street, where it stops now, to Myrtle Street," Kee said.

David Blakley walks the Leo Adler Memorial Parkway from Bridge Street to Hughes Lane almost every day.

When the Parkway was built about 15 years ago, officials concluded that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to secureeasements from riverside property owners that would allow the city to build the path next to the river between Bridge and Myrtle streets. The property the city would like to Community News....3A Crossword........4B & 6B Dear Abby ............... 10B
