Pisher of Sutherlin. Prom the beginning of the State Basketball Tournaments in 1919, the "B" teams (at that time 150 students and under) were obligated, following their championship in the district tournament, to compete against the "A" schools for the opportunity of entering the state tournament. At that time there were 185 registered "B" schools — almost triple the "A" schools in Oregon. SeeHistory/Page 11

HISTORY Continued ~om Page 4 At the annual meeting held in December 1933, at the Sign of the Rose Restaurant in Portland, the Oregon Activities Association voted to amend the constitution to make it read: "The Board of Control shall conduct each year an 'A' and 'B' high school tournament." The amendment carried by a vote of 58 to 9, a crowning successtothe effortsofthe committee. In the early stages of the Oregon Activities Association all principals were permitted tovote and hence, the vote of 58 to 9. The Board of Control at that time consisted of John L. Gary, West Linn, secretary; Paul T. Jackson, Klamath Falls, and Austin Landreth, Pendleton. A new committee was then appointed by the Board of Control to carry on the work which the original committee had achieved by the amendment to the constitution. The new committee consisted of O.F. Campbell, Wal-

lowa; E.S. Steltz, Bethel; and H.S. Hendrickson, Merrill. The "B" tournament plans were for eight state districts with the same number of teams playing in a three-day tournament. The amendment was to have gone into effect in the year of 1934-35. However, the"B" schools in the spring of 1935 were bracketed together in such a way that a "B" champion was not possible.

© • • • • • •

For the state tournament in the upper bracket there were seven "A" schools, and only one "B" school, namely Umapine. In the lower bracket there were three "B" schools and these were listed with five "A" schools. The "B" teams in the lower bracket were Mill City, No. 19; Gardner, No. 15; and Oakridge, No. 16. Hence, it was not possible for the four "B" teams to play the second

night as they did in the following year of 1936, which automatically gave an authentic"B"champion that year. However, in 1935, Oakridge receivedspecialattention by receivinga silvertrophy as the state's outstanding"B" team and the placement of two of their men on the all-star team, consisting of five men. On this all-star team were Laddie Gale, center, ilater

in 1939 selected for All-American while playing on the University of Oregon basketball team) and Jake Fisher, guard. The necessity of placing the "B" teams with the "A" in the tournament of 1935 was due to the financial condition at the time of the Depression. There were 10 "A" districts — nine of them having one team each; See History/Page 12
