The ads in this special Design-an-Ad publication were created by students of local grammar schools as part of Newspapers in Education week, celebrated nationally in March. In February, the advertising staff of the Baker City Herald made presentations to classes in Baker County about newspapers, including instruction in designing effective advertising. Students were given instructions for creating advertisements for businesses participating in the Design-an-Ad section. Advertisers chose the winning ad for their business to be published in this section. Many advertisers had a such a tough time picking a winner that they have chosen to display the rest of the entries in their stores, so stop by these businesses and take a look at the rest of the ads. Some ads were chosen to appear on the Eltrym movie screen (movie ads are produced by the Baker City Herald.) Newspapers in Education is a cooperative effort between newspapers and local schools

to use the newspaper as a tool for instruction. Classroom newspapers give teachers the opportunity to use the most up-to-date textbook available. Young readers quickly learn that a newspaper is more than news. It is a source of information about activities in the community, sports, feature stories and advertising that provides shopping choices

concerning goods and services readers are interested in buying. The Baker City Herald is pleased to provide newspapers for use in the schools with the help of local classroom newspaper sponsors. Just call the Baker City Herald at 541-523-3673 and

ask about Newspaper in Education classroom sponsorship opportunities. Our thanks to all of the advertisers, teachers and students who participated in this project. imelie Ingraham AdventistSchool Miss Megan8th Grade New DirectionsNorthwest
