oca must ums For thousands of years, Native Americans were drawn to the Grande Ronde Valley to hunt, gather food and to graze their horses. The abundant resources drew several different and often warring tribes. For a few months during the summer, the Nez Perce, Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla and the Shoshone tribes lived together in harmony in what they called 'The Valley of Peace." Although settlers passed through the valley while en route along the Oregon Trail in the early 1840s, few were willing to be deterred from their Willamette Valley goal. But early in the 1860s, many settlers took notice of the Grande Ronde Valley's resources, establishing farms and settlements. With the discovery of gold, the valley prospered and settlements thrived.
Along with peaceful settlers, cowboys and entrepreneurs, the region also drew outlaws, horse thieves, and cutthroats, lending colorful names to many of Union County's landmarks. Thief Valley Reservoir eamed its name when a band of vigilantes hanged a horse thief, while Dead Man Pass memorializes the struggles of the early pioneers. Step onto history along B Avenue in the oldest part of La Grande. Not only did wagons rumble down the hillside at this historic spot, many set up camp at what is now Bimie Park. Stop and enjoy the display by local artists commemorating this historic site and imagine life as an Oregon settler. The first pioneer cabin was built on the comer of B Avenue and Cedar Street. The cabin has since been moved
to Gangloff Park along Hwy. 30 overlooking La Grande. Historians erected a marker making it easy to find and to memorialize the location. You can literally walk in the footsteps of pioneers by stopping at the Blue Mountain Crossing. Head west out of La Grande on 1-84 to exit 247 this will take you right to the outdoor interpretive park — you can see where wagon wheels rubbed and scarred trees as they made their way through the woods.

Adventure and history awaits you in Northeast Oregon Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Union County. Cooling temperatures bring brilliant red, gold, and orange colors to the valley and surrounding mountains. Bring your boots for some short trzl hikes, orplan on short daytrips byauto. Best viewing times are moming and late aftemoon. Get a hearty breakfast at one of the local's favorite filling stations, the Long Branch in La Grande.(If you're staying in Union, Gravy Dave's is also a good choice.) Stop by Joe 8 Sugars and have them make your picnic lunch, then hop in your car, fuel up, and head west on 1-84 to exit 252. As you travel along 1-84, you'll parallel the Grande Ronde River and seesome tamaracks in their autumn gold. At exit 252, head west on 244, continuing to parallel the Grande Ronde. Along the way, you'll see more tamarack, as well as aspen. You can stop at the Red Bridge State Wayside and take the short walk along the river. Deciduous trees are also plentiful in this area, showing off their autumn colors. Make a loop and cross over the Elkhom Mountzns via Starkey, Granite, and
Sumpter, then pick up Hwy. 30 toward Baker City. This is a lengthy mountzn drive, so make sure you have plenty offuel. This loop — part of the Elkhom Scenic Byway — is usually dosed due to snow until late June and stays open until snow doses it agzn, usually bymid-November. Along this route, you'll pass through Sumpter, an historic gold mining community. The dredge is worth a look, and the scenery is lovely. Once you get to Baker City, stay on Hwy. 30, heading north toward Hznes. You'll pass farmlands and have ample opportunities to photograph the Elkhom and Eagle Cap ranges. At the junction of Hwy. 30 and 1-84, passunder the Interstate, toward North Powder, via Hwy. 237. This twisty road will take you through Pyles Canyon, rich in color, into the town of Union, where you can enjoy dinner at the historic Union Hotel before heading in for the night. Sunday moming, get ready for a quick trip just outside of La Grande to Mount Emily Recreation Area, via the Owsley Canyon Road access. Bring a picnic lunch and water.
Drive up Owsley Canyon Road to the fork in the road, veer right and park. Hike along the marked trzls, heading generally east/northeast and enjoy the warm fall colors of the trees, bushes, and grassy slopes. The trail takes you to some high open areas and near the mountzn's edge, where you'll see the valleysweeping before you in a patchwork of color. After your walk in the woods, head back down the mountain to the intersection
at Owsley Canyon Road and Black Hawk Trzl Lane. Tum left. At the intersection of Black HawkTrzl Lane and Mt. Glen Road, tum right. Look for the stone wall, and access Riverside Park on your left. The giant deciduous trees bursting with color are a can't-miss landmark. Stroll through the park and enjoy the color and crisp zr, then head back toward downtown via Spruce Street, where you'll drive under a canopy of Century Trees planted just after World War I. Head west on N Avenue, then take a left on 6th Street to arrive at Eastem Oregon University. The neighborhoods northwest of EOU feature fancy historic homes and flower gardens that are beautiful into the fall.

Union County offers some truly unique places to stay. If simplicity is what you seek, head to the Historic Union Hotel, built in 1921. You might leave your technology at home — none of the 16 rooms have telephones or televisions, and there is no wireless Intemet. Each room is decorated to a theme, and the original parlor has been kept as a place to gather and visit. http://thehistoricunionhotel.com/ 326 N Mzn Street Union, OR 97883 541-562-1200

The first wooden structure was built in 1864, and a brick building with 105 hotel rooms was completed in 1908. But hard times hit the hotel, and numerous business attempts never took off. In 2003, the Manuel family bought Hot Lake and began restoration. The Hot Lake Springs Gallery and Foundry opened in 2005, and the first ovemight guests were welcomed in 2010. http://www.hotlakesprings.com/ 66172 Hwy 203, La Grande 541-963-4685

Enjoy farm fresh food, traditionally prepared
Eastem Oregon's wide open spaces and fresh zr are the perfect ingredients for a culinary tour. But be forewamed: sun-kissed bounty and friendly farmers and restaurateurs make for a delicious adventure.
Wet your appetite with a quick swing through the Farmers' Market in La Grande's Max Square, where you can pick up a basket of fresh berries, arsan cheese, freshly baked bread and pastries. It's a great place to shop organic and grab some snacks for a picnic or munchies down the road. If a sit-down breakfast is more your style, belly up to the locals' favorite, The Longbranch, known for biscuits and gravy, golden pancakes, and countystyle omelets. The local sports bar Benchwarmers Pub 8 Grill, is the oldest connuously
running bar in Oregon. They offer 20 beers on tap, growler fill station and eight flatscreens.

Take Hwy. 237 from Cove to Union and enjoy winding through some of Eastem Oregon's backcountry. This short trip will take you past the Cove Drive-In, a favorite stop for soft-serve ice cream, milkshakes, and burgers. Ifyou happen to be in Cove at dinnertime stop in at the Cove Traven 8 Steak House, and enjoy a good steak. Keep on scenic Hwy. 237 head into Union where you will find a wide variety of fun places to eat. From burgers, to bagels and The Restaurant at the Historical Union Hotel with great food and sprits. Back in La Grande you can find fine dining at Ten Depot Street, there you will find locally-rzsed beef, lamb along with fresh fish that is flown in dzly. As the season change so does the menu. Nothing tops of a meal better than a slice of fresh huckleberry cheesecake. If you crave an intemational favor, try Mamacita's Intemaonal Grill, and enjoy a salad, burger, or pasta — all made with fresh ingredients. If handmade tortillas are your thing, head to La Fiesta and enjoy the flavors of Mexico and its south of the border decor. For an Asian treat stop in and see Frankie at the Golden Crown. Taste some of his sushi dishes people drive for miles just to enjoy. BangKok East, the Thz restaurant next door, serves up the best Thai food in Eastem Oregon.

With plenty of seldom used backroads, seeing Union County by bicycie is a terrific way to go any time of year. The Grande Ronde Valley is very rider-fiiendly, and you'll be on the receiving end of frequent friendly waves and smiles as you pedal through the small communities. The sceneryvaries greatly from season to season, and the valley is accessible all year long. Spring: newly planted crops, young tender foliage on the trees and bushes, and colorful pops of wildflowers. Early summer: lush rolling field crops and cool temperatures. Mid-summer: brilliant yellow of canola fields and sunflowers. July: pass farmers harvesting their crops in the warm summer sun. Fall: moderate temperatures and brilliant fall colors.
Autumn Ride An outstanding autumn ride is along Hwy244 from Hilgard State Park to Red Bridge State Wayside.
Mount Emily Recreation Area. There, you'll find double and single track routes with varying degrees of difficulty. With twisty tums, steep descents, and a rock garden for the hardy, MERA is an excellent choice. Another hardy mountzn bike adventure is a ride from CAvenue in La Grande up Morgan Lake Road. The gravel road is a steep ciimb, but the views and wildlife encounters are worth the grunt. For the average rider, drive to Morgan Lake, then take the gentle trzl encirciing the lake. In winter, snowy mountzns somewhat limit mountain biking, but with ready access to national forest lands, your Union County mountzn biking possibilities are nearlylimitless.
Cycling Map Pick up a Cyciing Map at the Visitor Center or Mountzn Works Bicycies at 1307Adams Ave. in La Grande. Mapped routes inciude a Century loop, as well as many shorter trips and mountzn bike trzlheads on Mount Emily, Mount Harris,
and Glass Hill. Visit www.rideoregonride.com
Scenic Bikeway Grande Tour Scenic BikewayThis 134-mile route makes a figure 8 through Union and Baker counties. It is rated as "moderate" on the Ride Oregon website. Bicyciists can either tackle the entire distance, or ride segments of the route for a more leisurely experience. This Scenic Bikeway covers some of the route traveled by pioneers on the Oregon Trzl and offers scenery of the two mountain ranges, varied farmland and small towns. Your ride begins at Riverside Park in La Grande with restaurants, motels, a bicycie shop and grocerystores. The halfway point of the route is historic Baker City, where you can refresh and spend a relaxing night enjoying excellent dining and accommodations, stop by the local bicycie shop or an award-winning microbrew. http://rideoregonride.com/road-routes/ grande-tour-scenic-bikeway/

La Grande's historic downtown encompasses a walkable half mile of retzl and dining agznst a backdrop ofhistoric buildings. In summer, baskets of flowers drape from light poles adding pops of color to downtown's fat;ade. Throughout the historic district, shoppers find galleries, boutiques and specialty shops, secondhand shops, antique shops, florist and gift shops, dothing and accessories, fabric and quilting stores, and plenty choices for dining.
Fresh finds During the summer months shopping in La Grande moves outdoors. Every Saturday moming from mid-May through mid-October the Farmer's Market pops up in Max Square on the comer of Fourth and Adams. The comer comes alive with
farmers and their produce, fresh eggs, organic beef and lamb, cheese, oils, honey, flowers and much more. To add to the favor of the Farmers Market you will also find food vendors, artisans with their handcrafted jewelry, pottery and soaps. And to top off the moming, there is always live music. During the same months there is a Tuesday's Farmers Market in late afternoon. It's just a little bit lower keyed but has many of the same vendors as the Saturday market.
Retail therapy At exit 265 is La Grande Towne Center, an outdoor shopping mall anchored by Ace Hardware, Bealls department store, Rite-Aid and La Grande Gold and Silver jewelry. The Towne Center is near major
o
hotels, fuel, dining and the transit center and Greyhound bus depot. Our Wal-Mart Super Center is located in Island City. In addition, shoppers will find other retzlers, induding dothing, shoes, groceries, dining and arcade. Island City is also home to Pendleton Grzn Growers and DAB Supply; they supply outdoor goods to the local farmers, ranchers and to pet owners. Just a short drive east on Hwy 203 you will drive by Ladd Marsh Wildlife area where you might see a Bald Eagle flying over the marsh looking for food or sitting in one of the many tress that line the road.

We're growing resources and solutions here in Northeast Oregon. Agriculture is at the heart of Northeast Oregon's history and the culture is thriving today. Sprawling cattle ranches and productive farms preserve the wide open spaces and create the patchwork quilt that covers the Grande Ronde Valley. Mint, alfalfa, grass seed, cherries, apples, peaches, potatoes, sugar beets and a variety of grains make up most of the crops grown in the valley's relatively mild climate and rich soil. You will smell a minty freshness in the air in August during harvest. Grapes are one of the area's newest crops, taking advantage of the sunny slopes above the town of Cove. Cattle ranching converts grass from less productive ground into protein that nourishes and flavors the world. The cowboy lifestyle is alive and well, with young ranchers taking over multi-generation family businesses. Eastern Oregon is truly cattle country.
As you drive the back roads, you might encounter a cattle drive. Please drive slowly, use caution and let the riders help you through the herd. Honking the horn won't help! So relax, and enjoy being in the center of an Old West experience with a future. Learn all about cowboys and ranching at the Cowboys Then 8 Now Exhibit at the Union County Museum in Union. This wonderful exhibit traces the history of cattle in North America, from Columbus to modern ranching.
Agri-Tourism Agri-tourism provides an outstanding opportunity for people to connect with nature and the origin of the food they often take for granted. It also offers an excellent chance for agriculturists to educate the public about modern farming and ranching practices and the role agriculturists
play in protecting the environment, providing habitat for wildlife and maintaining the wide open spaces and beautiful landscapes.
Ag research center The OSU Eastern Oregon Agriculture Research Center in Union consists of a lab on 600 acres of farm ground in Union and approximately 2,000 acres of forested land called the Hall Ranch, 12 miles southeast of Union on Highway 203. Research focuses on the compatibility of livestock with forested range ecosystems and on economic sustainability, with particular emphasis on alternative winter management and reproductive efficiency. Tours are available if you call in advance, 541-562-5129. 327 South 10th, Union
DIDYOUKNOW? Main crops are mint, alfalfa, grass seed, cherries, apples, peaches, potatoes, sugar beets and grains
Locally grown During summer and fall, farm stands and tours can be found throughout the Grande Ronde Valley. The Stargazer Perennials Nursery and Farm stand at 69611 Summerville Road (about 2.5 miles north of Summerville) is a destination for gardeners and fresh-produce lovers from Northeast Oregon, Idaho and Southeast Washington. The nursery is a nationwide supplier of hardy, locally-grown pesticide-free perennials, shrubs, herbs and other ornamental plants and gardening products, some of which have been planted in the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. Stargazer Perennials is open every day, 9 to 5, March through October. 541-7861791, www.stargazerperennials.com. c:ir or tro e With Interstate 84, a major four-lane limited access highway running east/west through La Grande, Union County is far from isolated. 1-84 provides a direct link to the West Coast and eastem population centers while several state highways link the county's communies and provide regional access. The Union Pacific and Idaho Northem Pacific rzlroads provide mznline freight service for regional and transcontinental destinations on a dzly basis. The Wallowa Union Railroad connects Wallowa County to the main lines and the Eagle Cap Excursion Trzn. The La Grande-Union County Municipal Airport is about 7 miles from downtown La Grande, about 14 miles from Union and Cove, and 20 miles from Elgin. With two runways, a comfortable lounge, conference and flight planning facilities, as well as courtesy cars for local transportation, travelers will find the that municipal zrport provides private, business and commercial flyers with all the amenies expected at larger facilities. Just a short car ride away, travelers can hop aboard SeaPort Airlines, which offers dzly flights from the Pendleton Airport to Portland Intemational Airport. Local and regional transportation is provided via Community Connection buses, offering local transportation on a fixed route, as well as regularly scheduled service to popular stops in Wallowa, Baker and Umatilla counes.
Summertime riders enjoy an oldfashioned, open-zr trip aboard a trolley bus styled after the electric streetcars ofyesteryear. For travelers seeking bus transport nationwide, Greyhound Bus Lines make regular stops at the Transportation Center.
