GRUNNFØR

Start the day with an amble out to the breakwater, before wandering around Svolvær’s diverse shops, or spend a few hours on a boat trip to the mighty Troll fjord. Follow the E10 to the medieval town of Kabelvåg, where you can see L ofoten Sk by Cathedral, one of Norway’s biggest wooden churches, and the village used jo m en fishermen during the Lofoten fishery. The town of Kabelvåg has preserved much of its old architecture, and from its square, you can see the statue of King Øystein onKVALØYA the hill. A few hundred metres away is Storvågan, where you can learn more about Lofoten’s story in museums Tranøy and galleries. See what lives under the waves in the aquarium, before continuing to the famous fishing village of Henningsvær, with its ’rorbu’ fishermen’s cabins, drying racks, lovely harbour, galleries and arts and crafts. Carry on to Gimsøy, turning left after the bridge to go horse riding or golfing.

Browse the galleries and museums of Svolvær with their modern and traditional oil paintings, watercolours, ice sculptures and jewellery, all inspired by the surrounding landscape. Take the E10 to Lyngvær, stopping off to considerSkVågan’s contribution jo m en to Artscape Nordland. Carry on along the E10 to Grunnstad, and use the bird observation tower and its information boards to view the many bird species found in this rich wetland area. There are three of these towers along the National Tourist Tranøy Route in Lofoten. When you get to Vestvågøy, an agricultural county, visit one of the many farms producing cheeses, herbs and spices. Take a detour to tiny Eggum village and see another of Artscape Nordland’s sculptures. This is a beautiful hiking area, and a popular place to see the midnight sun. Visit the Viking Museum at Borg, and see Europe’sFINNØYA biggest chieftain’s house. Follow the E10 to Leknes, and take the Stamsund turn-off, via idyllic Steine, before ending your day with a visit to a gallery ENGELØYA and a stroll around the fishing village that is the base of Lofoten’s trawler fleet.

Wake yourself up with a morning dip on Ramberg beach, then drive west along the E10. Admire the views from the Akkarvikodden viewpoint on the National Tourist Route, before heading down to Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Reine and Å. Take your time, and enjoy the kittiwake cliffs, landscape, culture and many exciting museums in this area – not forgetting Å’s cinnamon swirls. Take the ferry from Moskenesvågen to Værøy, steeped in culture and a perfect area for hiking. Add a boat trip to your hike, and smile at the comical little puffins. If you take the ferry to Røst, you’ll soon notice that the sports hall and pub are both called Querini. Learn the dramatic story of Røst’s connection with Italy, and stare in wonder at the sheer volume of stockfish that hang on the racks each year before being exported to the Italian market. Walk to Skomvær Lighthouse, and stay overnight in Røst Bryggehotell.

The dozens of inviting and exciting shops at Leknes shopping centre are enough TRÆNA to make shopaholics of us all. Drive along the E10 through the Napp tunnel, then stop at Nappskaret and take in the view from the top. Turn right in Vareid and head for Vikten, a village at the foot of Marbakken, where you can buy locally produced ceramics and glassware. Drive on to the famous old fishing and trading village of Nusfjord, with a well-preserved history and unique character, where you can still pop down to the general store. Go fishing here from a big boat, or hire a small one. Carry on to Flakstad and its church built from Russian timber, where regular summer concerts are held under the distinctive onion dome. Further on is Ramberg, whose beach attracts people from all over the world. Turn off the E6 towards Sund, and feel the heat from the blacksmith’s forge. The smithy here is famous for its iron cormorants, and the chug of the boat museum’s engines will bring back memories of your childhood seaside holidays. HERØY Moske

OVER 1,000 YEARS AGO, one of the most powerful Viking chieftains in Northern Norway ruled at Borg in Lofoten. The biggest Viking building ever found in Europe stood here. A full-scale 83 metre long reconstruction of the chieftain’s house has been built. The smell of tar and open fires hits you as soon as you walk into the rooms, which are beautifully decorated with handicrafts from the Viking Age. Children and adults can feel at home in this living museum, where nobody ever says ’don’t touch the exhibits’.

Cycling in Lofoten There can be quite a lot of traffic on the E10 in high season, but there are plenty of quieter side roads to choose from. These lovely roads also allow cyclists to get close to small communities off the beaten track. You can often find yourself cycling almost completely alone in a peaceful, open landscape with stunning views wherever you look. Evening bike rides, especially in the west and north of the region between late May and mid July, will also give you the chance to cycle under the midnight sun. And if you can avoid the month of July, you can enjoy your cycling holiday without most of the summer traffic. Sea birds, including sea eagles, can be seen in Lofoten all year round. Most of the roads in Lofoten are tarmacked, with a few short gravel sections. The distances are relatively short: the furthest, from Fiskebøl to Å along the E10 is about 160.7 kilometres.

There are four tunnels, totalling 2.7 kilometres in length. Cyclists are advised to bring waterproof and windproof clothing, good shoes, gloves, reflective vests, helmets, good lights and reflectors for the bikes and a first-aid kit.

SUGGESTED ROUTES Fiskebøl–Laukvik–Svolvær: 68 km From Fiskebøl, follow the outer edge of Austvågøya to a stunningly beautiful area. Incredible sandy beaches and ideal hiking terrain mean that you will definitely want to take your time. In summer, you can enjoy the midnight sun at Laukvika. The route winds between moorland, lakes and fjord arms, and you will see very few cars on most of it. Some gravel sections. The last part of the route is on the E10.

Henningsvær–Stamsund: 63 km Back to the E10 and past Lyngvær, cycle over Gimsøy Bridge with its lovely views, and stop off to walk around Gimsøy. Very few cars, lovely walking country and stunning sandy beaches make this a superb trip. In summer, enjoy the midnight sun from the north side of this island. You can also stay overnight in Hov. To get to Vestvågøy, you have to cross Sundklakkstraumen. Follow RV 815 along the southern edge, turn off onto Valbergveien, a relatively quiet, tarmacked road, and cycle on to Stamsund. For timetables and more information about our cycling routes, take a look at our website www.lofoten.info, where you can also buy ‘Hjulgleder’, the cycling handbook about Lofoten. It’s a very useful tool for anyone who wants to discover Lofoten by bicycle.

Lofoten is famous for its dramatic natural landscape, and it’s perfect for cycling – much of the terrain is surprisingly flat and easy.

DID YOU KNOW... About 24,000 people live on the Lofoten islands, and traces show that there were people living here in 10,000 BC.

The taste of Lofoten

The quality of ‘Lofoten stockfish’ has given it the same geographical protection as champagne and Parma ham! And rightly so – Norway has been developing this trademark for a thousand years. It was the Vikings who introduced stockfish to the Europeans, when they took it with them on their travels and bartered it for other goods. Using one of the oldest food preservation methods in the world, our fish are dried naturally with no additives. The head and body are dried separately, and before they are hung on the racks, the innards are removed. The livers are used for cod-liver oil, and the roe becomes Norwegian caviar. We also eat the cheeks and tongues. After two or three months on the racks, the fish are dry enough to be brought indoors, where they are sorted according to size and appearance. Our stockfish have created a close community that still welcomes travellers, to whom we are proud to offer our local dishes. You can also find stockfish hanging on boathouse walls and in people’s 16

© a a l a n d g å rd

Hardy, well adapted plants and animals form our harvest here. Our larder is the sea, which has sustained coastal dwellers all over the world and created many distinctive culinary traditions. Even on what appears to be wild, windswept land, we have our oases of fertile soil, sheltered from the cold north wind by high mountains. Bright summers and constant humidity make up for the short growing season, and create unexpected opportunities like carrots that grow big and tender in the rays of the midnight sun.

Don’t just experience Lofoten – taste it! Whether it’s in a lovingly-prepared dish in one of our many restaurants, or in the fresh seashore air with the tang of stockfish and seaweed, you’re never too far from the taste of the region. The sun, wind and rain that give our stockfish their special taste also help to preserve them. And the quays, fishermen’s cabins, fish drying racks, farms and pastures, from shore to mountaintop, are all reminders of our vibrant, traditional food culture.

homes, where it is always on hand in case of a spontaneous midsummer party!

and c hocolate, as well as pâté, herring and fish cakes made from traditional recipes. We can find salmon, shellfish, whales and other fish right outside our front door. Fantastic fresh ingredients mean that food tastes amazing, whether you make it yourself in a ‘rorbu’ or treat yourself at one of our many local restaurants. Our shops stock local food, or you can buy it direct from many of our local producers. Local food in shops is marked with an ‘L’.

We hope that you will enjoy the chance to taste your way through Lofoten. The lush grass on our steep hillsides gives us particularly tender Lofoten lamb. Cows and goats give us meat and a variety of dairy products. Herbs grow wild and in herb gardens. And the fact that we’re north of the Arctic Circle doesn’t put off our honey bees. The Midnight sun gives a special Arctic flavour to our natural products, and we are equally proud of our eggs, ice cream

No matter what you choose, you will get to feel, hear, see, smell and taste Lofoten! Have a great trip!

Svolvær Svolvær is the administrative centre of Vågan, with many shops, galleries and the Lofoten Kulturhus. The goat-like Svolværgeita looks down on the town, a challenge to climbers. Most of Lofoten’s accommodation is here, and it is one of the most important harbours in North Norway for maritime services.

Kabelvåg and Storvågan A historic area with roots going back to the year 8000, this was the most densely populated area in North Norway in the Middle Ages because of the Lofoten fishery. All the fish were shipped from here for onward export to the continent. Lofoten’s first church was built in Kabelvåg by King Øystein, probably in 1103, and rorbu fishermen’s cabins were built around 1120. The present Vågan Church, also known as ‘Lofoten Cathedral’, was built in 1898. Kabelvåg is part of the area’s cultural history, and also has museums, galleries and an aquarium.

Laukvik DID YOU KNOW... You turn cod into stockfish by hanging it on racks from February to May?

22

Its beautiful location on the outer edge means that Laukvik is perfect for hiking. You can enjoy the midnight sun here in summer and the Northern Lights in winter. Visit the Polarlightcenter to learn more about these natural phenomena.

austvågøy & gimsøy Henningsvær Bridges join the many islands of Henningsvær to the mainland. The Venice of Lofoten, Henningsvær has played a significant role in Lofoten’s fishing history and is still a fascinating destination with its many small craft shops, art gallery and pleasant atmosphere. The nearby mountains are excellent for climbing.

Gimsøy Gimsøy on the outer edge of Lofoten has fantastic views of the ocean and midnight sun. Hov is one of Lofoten’s oldest inhabited spots; treasures from the past such as Stone Age and Iron Age burial mounds and landing places may be found between the fairways and tees of the golf course.

Trollfjord, Digermulen and Skrova The Trollfjord lies in the beautiful Raftsund Strait between Austvågøy and Hinnøy. At its most spectacular, the fjord narrows to a mere 70 metres wide, with high cliffs plunging straight into the sea. On the other side is Digermulen, first visited by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 21 July 1889. Further on are the islands of Skrova, with 200 or so inhabitants in a fishing village famous for its connection to the Lofoten fishery and whaling.

Hiking Trails Djupfjorden Drive towards Henningsvær and stop just before the causeway in Djupfjorden. Continue on the path along the fjord to a lake. Idyllic beach at the far end of the lake. Return trip: about 2 hours.

Hoven (368 m) The walk up Hoven on Gimsøya is excellent. Start at Hov. Return trip: about 2.5 hours.

Tjeldbergtinden (367 m) Leave the E10 at the Esso station in Osan, Svolvær. Turn second left, follow the track towards the pistol range. At the bend just before the radio mast, turn right and follow the steep path up to the peak. A fairly demanding hike. About a 2 hour return trip. You can buy hiking maps in tourist information centres or on the website www.lofoten.info

FIRST TIME DIVER? NEVER DIVED BEFORE?

There are many places to visit along the southern side of the island. Mortsund and Stamsund are still busy fishing villages today. The Hurtigruten stops at Stamsund on its way north and south; there are ‘rorbu’ rentals and restaurants, a gallery, theatre and downhill ski slope. The fishing industry and contemporary theatre are important sources of jobs in Stamsund. Valbergveien is a recommended cycle route, with many beautiful beaches, walks and places to stay.

No problem! Explore Lofoten’s underwater life with your personal instructor. Diving is safe and fun! Duration 3 hours. Suitable for all. Price includes equipment rental. 01.05 > 30.09 -

The Lofotr Viking Museum is set among the fertile farmland of Borg, displaying findings from the archaeological excavations there. These findings show us how the Vikings lived 1000 years ago. Agriculture is an important industry for Vestvågøy, and this is reflected in the local food producers. Not far from Borg are not one but two farms that produce their own cheeses, herbs and sausages. See ‘the Head’ statue at Eggum, and climb an amazing fortress left over from the war. Join surfers from all over the world at Unstad on one of the best surfing beaches in Europe.

Nestled between green meadows and mountains lies Leknes, Vestvågøy’s administrative centre. Leknes has a hotel, restaurants, shops, a pharmacy, bakery, workshops and more. The area around Leknes has plenty to attract walkers, surfers and paragliders. Ballstad is one of the biggest active fishing villages in Lofoten. Cod liver oil is still produced here and you can find the world’s biggest mural and lots of ‘rorbu’ for your fisherman’s cabin holiday.

Hiking Trails Kvalvika Torsfjorden to Kvalvika is a lovely, but fairly demanding hike. Turn off the E10 to Fredvang and follow the road to Selfjorden. The signposted path to Kvalvika starts in the car park. Return trip: about 2.5 hours.

Andopen From Napp, a charming old track leads you alongside Nappstraumen to Andopen. Return trip: 2 hours.

Nusfjord–Nesland Strenuous walk. About 300 metres south of the old school in Nusfjord, a cairned path leads to Nesland. About 200 m before Østre Nesland, there are some giant potholes by the shore. Nesland has Lofoten’s only watermill. Return trip: about 4 hours. There is lots of great hiking in Flakstad; contact the tourist information centre for some tips.

Flakstadøy Flakstad in West Lofoten consists of Flakstad island itself and the northern part of Moskenes island, the municipality straddling either side of the narrow Sundstraumen sound.

Flakstad has many beautiful beaches to lure you off the road. The natural environment is perfect for many activities: relaxing hikes or extreme sports on land or water. A deep-sea fishing trip with one of the local fishing boats will become an unforgettable memory. There are many galleries, craftsmen, museums, restaurants and ‘rorbu’ fishermen’s cabins here.

Most residents live in the five traditional fishing villages of Ramberg, Fredvang, Napp, Sund and Nusfjord. Flakstad is typical of many Northern Norwegian coastal fishing municipalities, and most fishing boats are family owned and operated. In Ramberg, the administrative centre, there is a library, school, the local council offices, warehouse, printer’s, petrol station, boat business and car workshop. Nusfjord is Flakstad’s best-known fishing village, and in 1975, European Architectural Heritage Year, it became one of three pilot projects aimed at conserving Norway’s building heritage.

Culture is on offer in Flakstad throughout the year, and you can see professionals and amateurs performing live. Flakstad has its own choir, youth string orchestra and many traditional musicians. Lunchtime concerts are held in the church from Tuesdays to Fridays in summer, but visitors are welcome all day. moskenesøy

Some of the best-known fishing villages like Hamnøy, Reine, Sørvågen and Å are in Moskenes. The landscape was formed by glaciers and natural forces and is some of Norway’s wildest and most interesting areas. At 1029 metres, Hermannsdalstind is the highest peak in West Lofoten, a landscape of steep mountains and n arrow coastal strips. The many mountain lakes are rich in fish, and the 3 billion year old rocks are the oldest in Europe. The western, outer edge has been uninhabited since the 1950s.

These days, people live on the eastern side of the island, where there are good harbours for the fishing fleet, freighters and leisure craft. If you like walking, you can choose between the mountains and lots of tiny, traditional fishing villages.

Hiking Trails Sørvågvannet From Sørvågen, an illuminated trail runs around Sørvågvannet lake. A detour up the Studalen valley extends the walk. Return trip: 1 hour.

9

Reinebringen You can walk to Reinebringen from Ramsvika on an unmarked trail in steep, treacherous terrain. You’ll never forget the view – but be careful, it can be slippery! Return trip: 2 hours.

Bunesstranda From Reine, take the boat to Vindstad. Follow the road from Vindstad to the end of the fjord and across a small strip of land down to Bunesstranda. This incredible sandy beach is worth the effort! The whole trip, including the boat, takes about 4 hours. The boat can also drop you off in Forsfjord, from where you can walk to Hermanndalstind, Munkebu and Sørvågen. You can buy hiking maps in tourist information centres or on www.lofoten.info

DID YOU KNOW... Lofoten’s rorbu cabins have historic roots going back to the 1100s? They were originally simple dwellings for an entire crew during the Lofoten fishery.

værøy Værøy, penultimate island in the Lofoten a rchipelago, has every possible Lofoten feature: midnight sun, white beaches, bird cliffs, and a historic but still active fishing village. The distinctive Værøy mountains are just as steep as those in the rest of Lofoten, but much easier to climb – you can get great all-round views after a quick hike. Almost all of the jobs here are related to the seasonal fisheries – cod in winter, halibut and coalfish in summer, and herring in autumn. The huge sea-bird colonies on the outer side of Værøy’s Måstad peninsula used to be an essential source of food for the islanders. The rare Norwegian Lundehund dog comes from the village of Måstad, now abandoned but an idyllic hiking spot. There are many attractions on Værøy, like Lofoten’s oldest church, chocolate factory, painters, ceramics, clothes designers, antiques, deep-sea fishing and RIB boat trips.

10

Nupsneset and Håheia An enjoyable, fairly tough walk takes you past the school to Marka where the road ends. From here, either continue right up the path or road to Håheia, 400 m high, with an incredible panoramic view – or continue through a gravel pit and into beautiful Sørlandshagen. There are many paths to choose between here, but they all eventually lead to Nupsneset. Tip: follow the shore back, and enjoy the lovely pebble beach.

Måstad The walk from Nordlandshagen to Måstad is decidedly more strenuous. The track is marked, and with sturdy shoes and a bit of stamina you should have a wonderful time. At an easy pace the walk should take 2 to 3 hours each way. Please remember that the track might be slippery in wet weather.

Not far from the ferry port is a marked trail to Kvalness Beacon. Lush archipelago area, rich in bird life.

As early as the 12th century, stockfish from Lofoten was Norway’s most important export, and for centuries was the country’s most lucrative export.

Further south, the islands of Storfjellet, Vedøya, Trenyken and Hærnyken loom out of the water like giant monuments. Trenyken is the best known, with its 5000 year old cave paintings and three defiantly towering peaks. The cliffs south of Røstlandet are home to one of Europe’s biggest sea bird colonies. And at the very edge of it all is Skomvær Lighthouse, Norway’s most fabled, weather-lashed lighthouse. The entire population of the municipality lives on Røstlandet and a few lesser islands linked by roads and bridges. The local council offices, church, schools, kindergarten, shop and post office, restaurants, hotels, airport, and fish processing facilities are also here.

Steinkirka The Yellow Trail is the shortest, about 0.5 km long, leading to the ruins of the 1835 stone church, consecrated in 1839 by Bishop Kierschow. It should have held 110 people, but only had 78 seats. The later chancel and sacristy were consecrated in 1883. More information can be found on the board nearby.

Ånnhammeren About 1.5 km long, the Blue Trail leads to Ånnhammeren. Though only 10 metres high, Ånnhammeren is a natural landmark and viewpoint on the island. There is no evidence to suggest that this was a place for spirits (‘ånder’), the name probably coming from the Norwegian ‘ørn’ (eagle). There used to be eagles’ nests here, and it is still an overwhelming sight to see flocks of eagles circling the crag. The trail leads through a sheltered but flat and open area of bogs and shallow ponds. The vegetation is extremely diverse because of the huge variations in salinity.

Røst has inspired many famous artists, including Theodor Kittelsen K. Espolin Johnsen and Luciano Fabro, contributor to Artscape Nordland. Planes and ferries depart several times a day during the summer to Røst.

Outermost in the Lofoten archipelago, about 100 km to the west of Bodø and 115 km north of the A rctic Circle, we find the 365 islands, isles and skerries of Røst. The largest of them, its highest point barely 11 m above sea level, is Røstlandet.

GOOD TO KNOW Midnight sun and Polar Night • Midnight sun from mid May to mid July. • Polar night (time of Arctic colours) from about 6 December to 6 January. NORTHERN LIGHTS – AURORA BOREALIS The Northern Lights are a physical phenomenon that can be seen in the night sky in a belt around the magnetic poles. They appear to us as a rippling light that varies in strength, shape and colour, from pink and violet to white and luminous green. The Northern Lights come all the way from the sun. Powerful solar storms hurl charged particles out into space, and some of these hit the earth’s atmosphere to form the Northern Lights. Most of Northern Norway, from Lofoten to the North Cape, is in the Northern Lights belt, which means that you have the best chances of seeing them here – and the mild climate brought by the Gulf Stream means that it doesn’t get much better than that. What’s the best time of year to see the Northern Lights? The Northern Lights are an autumn and winter phenomenon, and can only be seen in a dark and clear sky. What time of day can you see the Northern Lights? The Northern Lights can appear at any time, but they tend to be between 18.00 and 01.00 in the morning. The best chance is between 22.00 – 23.00 at night (in winter). Recovery services • NAF (Norwegian Automobile Federation) Emergency number in Norway: 08505 • Viking Recovery Service Emergency number in Norway: 06000. From abroad – tel.: (+47) 22 08 60 00 • Falck Norge. Emergency number in Norway: 02222. From abroad – tel.: (+47) 33 13 80 80 EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBERS Fire: 110 – Police: 112 – Emergency medical help: 113. Theemergency helpline centres assess the situation and arrange the necessary assistance. DRIVING Cars must have headlights switched on at all times. The drinkdriving laws in Norway are strict. The legal limit is 0.02% blood alcohol content. VISITORS’ MOORINGS IN LOFOTEN There are many visitors’ moorings and sheltered anchorages in Lofoten. Many of these are well described in www.havneguiden.no This Harbour Guide is a useful tool if you’re sailing your own boat in Lofoten, and we recommend you consult it when planning your trip.

SHOP OPENING TIMES/FOOD Shops are usually open every day except Sunday from 10:00– 17:00 (Thursday 10:00–18:00). Shopping centres are often open longer. In bigger towns, some groceries may also open on Sundays. Petrol stations and some kiosks also sell food. ALCOHOL: You can only buy wine and spirits in the stateowned ‘Vinmonopolet’ shops, which can be found in most towns. Almost all groceries sell beer, but please note that legally the sale of beer ends at 6pm (3 pm on Saturdays, not at all on Sundays). The minimum age is 20 to buy spirits, and 18 to buy beer. CURRENCY It’s best to change foreign currency into NOK before your trip. Payment cards are widely used in Norway, and most shops accept credit cards such as American Express, Diners, Eurocard, Visa and MasterCard. Foreign debit cards are not widely accepted; we recommend you use an ATM to withdraw Norwegian currency instead. PUBLIC ACCESS RIGHTS Access rights are an integral part of the Norwegian cultural heritage, and require people to respect nature and property. Wilderness is uncultivated land, i.e. most water, beach, marsh, forest and mountain areas. Cultivated land, i.e. fields, meadows, pastures, gardens, newly planted areas, courtyards, building plots and industrial areas is not covered by the right of public access. Lighting fires in woodland and open countryside between 15 April and 15 September is not allowed. FISHING REGULATIONS DEEP-SEA FISHING: Sports fishing in the sea with a hand line is free. Note that you are only permitted to take 15 kg of filleted fish out of Norway, and you are not allowed to sell your catch. CLOTHING Always be prepared for changes in the weather; it’s better to wear too much clothing than too little, so that you can have a great time without worrying about whether you’ll be cold. Summer temperatures can vary between 25°C and 8°C. Check the weather forecast and be prepared. SUMMER: Bring a combination of lightweight and warm clothing, and windproof and waterproof outer layers. Good walking shoes/boots will help you make the most of your stay.

13

WINTER: Wool or thermal underwear, a layer of fleece or wool, and windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers. Don’t forget gloves/mittens, hat and scarf. Consider special winter shoes with a wool liner.
