Hiking trails in Lofoten Hiking trails in Lofoten promote all kinds of activities and wonderful experiences in varied and exciting country. Some trails are marked with cairns, others are unmarked. Most tourist information centres sell hiking maps, and are able to offer you more detailed information: Lofoten Turlag, www.lofoten-turlag.no You can also buy maps from www.lofoten.info IMPORTANT! Please be careful even when following marked and well-trodden paths through seemingly safe terrain. There will always be steep drops close by. Remember to take with you a hiking map, suitable clothing/footwear and sufficient food. Show consideration for the environment! We ask visitors to help us take care of Lofoten’s attractive, but vulnerable natural surroundings (flora and fauna, etc.)

VÅGAN Alt. 1: A fine walk from Gimsøya takes you up to Hoven. Start at Hov and you will reach the top in half an hour or an hour, depending on what shape you are in. Alt. 2: Drive towards Henningsvær and stop just before the dump in Djupfjorden. Continue on the path along the fjord to a lake. Secluded bathing beach at the far end of the lake. Allow for at least an hour on your way to the beach. Alt. 3: Leave Highway E10 at the Esso service station in Osan, Svolvær. Turn second left and follow the gravelled road towards the pistol range. At the bend in the road just before you reach the radio mast, turn right and follow the trail that climbs steeply up to Tjeldbergtind peak. A fairly demanding hike in steep terrain. Approx. 1.5 – 2 hours there and back to the service station. VESTVÅGØY Alt. 1: At Ballstad you start at Kræmmervika/the breakwater and follow a track along the shore to the southern tip of Vestvågøy: Brurstolen. Allow for 1 hour so far. Then you continue along Nappstraumen to the ruins at South Græna and North Græna. This takes about 2 hours. Return by the same route. Alt. 2: Departure from «Borga» at Eggum along the road, which eventually turns into a mere path, to the beacon; 1,5 hours so far. This area is well suited for watching the Midnight Sun. Alt. 3: Start from the road to the youth hostel in Stamsund, walk 12

about 300 m and take the Ringveien about 400 m - and then towards right by the sign; we follow the path. Further towards Ørntuva and up to the Heah - big cairn and a magnifi can view towards Henningsvær, Skrova, Ure and Vestfjorden. This is an easygoing and well-marked path. Walking time about 3 hours. FLAKSTAD Alt. 1: This is somewhat more strenuous. The walk takes you from Torsfjorden to Kvalvika on the outer side (about 1 hour each way). Alt. 2: From Napp, a charming old track leads you along the maelstrom Nappstraumen to Andopen. You should allow for 1 hour each way. Alt. 3: Approx. 300 metres south of the old school in Nusfjord, there is a cairned path leading to Nesland. This is a more demanding walk that takes about 4 hours there and back. Approx 200m before you reach Østre Nesland, you may see several large potholes near the shore. Nesland has the only watermill found in Lofoten. MOSKENES Alt. 1: Along an illuminated trail around the lake Sørvågvannet, starting at Sørvågen; a pleasant walk of about one hour’s duration. If you would like a longer walk, try taking a detour up to the Studalen valley. Alt. 2: Fra Ramsvika kan en gå til Reinebringen til utsiktspunkt. Dette er en umerket løype i meget bratt terreng med løs stein, så

Photo, left: CH/www.visitnorway.com and Johnny Storvik

also some patches of loose gravel on the way, so it may be a bit slippery. Be careful! Allow approx. 2 hours to the top and back. Alt. 3: To get to Vindstad you take the fjord route from Reine. From Vindstad there is a road to the bottom of the fjord, crossing an isthmus 75 m above sea-level, and down to Bunes. This fabulous sandy beach is well worth your effort. The entire trip (including the boat ride) takes 4 hours. It is possible to have the boat stop so that you can go ashore in the Forsfjord. From there it is possible to go to Mount Hermannsdalstind, Munkebu cabin and Sørvågen. VÆRØY Alt. 1: An enjoyable and not very exerting walk would take you past the school to Marka where the tarred road ends. From here, you continue through a gravel pit and to a lovely stretch along the shore which is called Sørlandshagen. Here you can choose between several tracks, all of which lead to the promontory Nupneset. The walk from the gravel pit to Nupneset takes about an hour. Alt. 2: The walk from Nordlandshagen to Måstad is decidedly more exerting. The track is blazed, and with sturdy shoes and a bit of stamina you should have a wonderful time. At an easy pace the walk should take 2 to 3 hours each way. Please remember that the track might be slippery in rainy weather.

RØST There are three alternative hiking trails in Røst, depending on how good a walker you are. The trails are marked with the colours blue, yellow and red. Alt. 1 – The Yellow Trail is the shortest, approx. 0.5 km long. The trail leads to the ruins of the old stone church from 1825, which was inaugurated on May 5th 1839 by Bishop Kierschow. It is said to have accommodated 110 people, but only had 78 seats. The chancel and sacristy were added later and inaugurated in 1883. Further information about the church can be found on the information board near the church. Alt. 2 – The Blue Trail is approx.1.5 km long and leads to Ånnhammeren. With an altitude of 10 metres above sea level, Ånnhammeren is a natural landmark and viewpoint on the island of Røst. There is no evidence to suggest that this has been a spiritual place (ånder=spirit). The name is most probably a derivative of the Norwegian word for eagle (ørn). In former times there were eagle’s nests here, and it is still an overwhelming experience to see flocks of eagles circling the crag. The trail leads through a flat and open area of marshland and shallow ponds that is sheltered from the sea. The vegetation there is extremely diverse due to the substantial variation in salinity found within such a small area.

You can find maps of walking routes at the tourist office, the town hall and in many hotels, guest houses and restaurants.

Cycling in the Lofoten Islands If you plan to cycle on the main E10 route through the Lofoten Islands, it is advisable to take particular care owing to periodically heavy traffic and narrow stretches of road. In the summer months especially, it can be wise to choose an alternative route where possible. With clothing suited to the conditions and good equipment, Lofoten can be comfortably enjoyed not just in the busiest weeks of summer. Lofoten is in general easy cycling country, with the highest point approximately 130 metres above sea level and the lowest approximately 130 metres below sea level. We recommend taking a cycle with good tyres. Although the E10 is tarred the entire way, there are innumerable fantastic little side roads that are unmade or gravelled. Remember to bring waterproof and windproof clothing and good shoes, as well as gloves, refl ector vest, safety helmet, plenty of lights and reflectors on your cycle, and a first aid kit. The inhabitants of Lofoten are fond of people – so be sure to contact those you meet along the road if you have any queries or need help! The midnight sun is visible in the areas on the western and northern side

Art and galleries Lofoten’s landscape, and the very special light conditions that arise in the meeting of sky, clouds, mountains and sea, have been attracting painters and photographers for more than a hundred years. They have relished the challenge of reflecting their powerful experiences in visual form. For this reason, we have a wonderful selection of art galleries in Lofoten. There are no huge collections, but they are collections of quality. You can also experience for yourself what these artists have experienced. All you have to do is travel through Lofoten. Many people have characterised the landscape itself as Lofoten’s biggest attraction. As you travel through Lofoten, you can combine the experience of this wonderful landscape with visits to art galleries. Photo: Mads Paaske Tellefsen

Highway E10 is a National Tourist Route through Lofoten The National Tourist Route in Lofoten runs from Fiskebøl to Å and is 166 kilometres long. Along the way you will find some unusual rest areas, viewpoints with special facilities and exciting architecture. In this picture from Eggum you can see one of the finest results of the tourist route project, with its café and toilet facilities for visitors. National Tourist Routes is a nationwide project carried out by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. The Head of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration provides the authorities and framework, and the Tourist Route Offi ce of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration manages the project. A separate, superior review board ensures that the routes become a particular tourist attraction of high quality. Separate architectural boards ensure that the features along the routes are of a high visual quality. More information on www.turistveg.no

The underlying idea of this project is that a work of art, by its presence creates a place of its own. The sculpture also visualizes its surroundings, thus giving the place a new dimension. ON BORG IN LOFOTEN the largest building from the Viking Era was found – the largest in whole of Europe. 1000 years ago, in a magnificent landscape, this is where one of the most powerful chieftains of Northern Norway ruled. The reconstructed 83 m long house of Olaf Tvennumbrunni plays the lead role in the story of the Viking life in Northern Norway. Feel the atmosphere in the chieftain’s house, admire arts and crafts and enjoy the live animals on the farm.

By the boat house, you will find a replica of the Viking ship “Vargfotr” – you are welcome aboard to row it. Rowing and activities such as axe throwing and shooting with bow and arrow are available 15.06.-15.08. The children are happy to visit our live, outdoor, archeological museum – where it is allowed to touch and feel the life of the Vikings.

Experience the taste of Lofoten

Photo: Johnny Trotamundo (left), Anne Karine Statle, Christoffer/Tank design, Therese Van Nieuwenhoven and Seth Hobby

When in Lofoten, the taste of the region will never be far away. You will find it well-prepared at one of the many restaurants on your trip, and you will recognize it from a walk along the shore or quayside. The smell of stockfish, seaweed and the seashore itself will stimulate your senses. The wind, the sun and the rain in your face are the same elements that give taste to and conserve the cod, turning it into stockfish. What you see around you is a landscape characterized by a vibrant and traditional culinary culture. You see quaysides, fisherman’s cabins, fish racks, farms and pastures from shore to mountaintop. What we can harvest here comes from robust and well adjusted plants and animals. The sea is a pantry that has sustained people all along the coast and created distinctive culinary traditions all over the world. On land the windswept climate has left its mark on the vegetation, but Lofoten too has its oases of fertile soil between the high mountains, sheltered from the cold north wind. The bright summer and constant humidity compensate for short seasons of growth, creating unexpected opportunities like our big, juicy carrots that have gathered sustenance from the sun 24 hours a day. Because of its excellent quality, “Stockfish from Lofoten” is a geographically protected name in Norway, in the same league as champagne and Parma ham - a trademark under development for over a thousand years. It was the Vikings who introduced stockfish to the Europeans. They took the dried fish with them on their travels to Europe and bartered fish for other wares. The fish drying process is conducted in exactly the same way today, completely naturally with no additives. It is one of the oldest food preservation methods known. The head and the body are dried separately, and before they are hung on the fish racks, the innards are removed, including the liver and roes. The liver is used in the manufacture of codliver oil, while the roes are used in Norwegian caviar. From the head you can eat both the tongue and the cheeks. After two or three months on the racks, the fish have dried enough to be taken indoors. After the stockfish has been taken inside it is sorted by size and appearance. Stockfish has created close relationships between people and a culture open to visitors, to whom we proudly offer our local dishes. Stockfish may also be found hanging on boathouse walls, and at people’s homes where it is used as a snack for young and old and as the reason for spontaneous get-togethers on midsummer nights. Whichever way you decide, you will feel, hear, see, smell or taste Lofoten. We wish you a pleasant trip, and a taste of Lofoten.

KABELVÅG A historic area with roots going back to the year 900. In the middle ages, this was the most populous area of North Norway, because of the Lofoten fishery. It was from here that all the fish were shipped southwards, for onward export to the continent. King Øystein had Lofoten’s first church built in Kabelvåg, probably in 1103, as well as rorbu fishermen’s dwellings in 1120. The present Vågan Church, also known as “Lofoten Cathedral”, was built in 1898. The marketplace is the heart of Kabelvåg, forming a pleasant frame around the harbour. Kabelvåg is part of the area’s cultural history, with many architecturally interesting buildings.

HENNINGSVÆR AND GIMSØY

Photo: Terje Rakke (left), www.visitnorway.com and Kjell Ove Storvik

Henningsvær, the Venice of Lofoten, consists of several islands joined to the mainland by bridges. Henningsvær played a significant role in Lofoten’s fishing history and is an interesting destination today, with its many small craft shops, art gallery and pleasant atmosphere. The mountains on the way out to Henningsvær are a fine area for climbing and mountain walks of the airier kind.

RESTAURANT

Gimsøy on the outer edge of Lofoten has fantastic views of the ocean and midnight sun. Hov is one of Lofoten’s oldest inhabited spots; treasures from the past such as stone age and iron age burial mounds and landing places may be found between the fairways and tees of the golf course.

LEKNES, ALSTAD AND BALLSTAD

Photo: Nina Beyer (left), CH/www.visitnorway.com

Nestled between green fields and mountains lies Leknes, which is Vestvågøy’s administrative centre. Leknes offers a hotel, restaurants, shops, a pharmacy, a bakery and workshops. The area around Leknes is a constant attraction for walkers, surfers and paragliders. Ballstad is one of the biggest active fishing villages in Lofoten. Cod liver oil is still produced here and you can find the world’s biggest mural and many opportunities for a rorbu holiday.

Did you know ...

Photo: Johnny Storvik

There are many places to visit along the southern side of the island of Vestvågøy. Mortsund and Stamsund are still living fishing villages today. The Hurtigruten stops at Stamsund on its

dried fish from Lofoten was Norway’s first export product?

way north and south; there are rorbu rentals and restaurants, a gallery and a ski slope for winter sports. Valbergveien is a recommended cycle route in Lofoten, with many beautiful beaches , walks and places to stay.

FLAKSTAD

CH/www.visitnorway.com

ACCOMADATION

Flakstad consists of Flakstad island itself and the northern part of Moskenes island. Most of the people of Flakstad live on the outer side of Lofoten, towards the ocean, in fishing villages such as Ramberg and Fredvang. The municipality is divided in two by the Sundstraumen sound, which is at its narrowest at Strømsnes; here the islands of Flakstad and Moskenes are so close that there is barely room for two fishing vessels to pass each other in the navigable channel. Ramberg has a library, the local council offices, shops, a petrol station and car workshop. Just outside Ramberg is Flakstad Church, a beautiful wooden church with its characteristic onion-shaped dome, built around 1780. Nusfjord is Flakstad’s best-known fishing village. During European Architectural Heritage Year in 1975, Nusfjord was selected as one of three pilot projects for the conservation of Norway’s traditional building practice. Flakstad has many beautiful beaches that tempt you to make many stops along the way.

In the vibrant fishing village of Nusfjord you will be staying in a historical setting, amid fantastic natural surroundings. Choose between original, historical rorbu cabins or modern cabins with all the necessary conveniences. Our country store that dates back to 1907 sells fresh bread and newspapers every morning, and Restaurant Karoline, with its panorama windows overlooking the Vestfjord, serves delicious dishes with ingredients from the nearby waters. You can spend the evening at the charming tavern, Oriana Kro, or in Restaurant Karoline. In addition to trips out to sea on the fishing vessel “Elltor”, we also offer rowing boats and the hire of motor boats, kayaks, bicycles and a spa bath tub. There are also excellent conference facilities in Nusfjord with a capacity of up to 90 people. Welcome to Nusfjord, Norway’s oldest and best preserved fishing village.

Come stay with us when in Lofoten – for the memory of a lifetime.

MOSKENES

ACCOMADATION

In Moskenes you will find some of the best-known fishing villages, such as Hamnøy, Reine, Sørvågen and Å. The landscape was formed by glaciers and natural forces and is some of the wildest and most interesting that Norway has to offer. Hermannsdalstind, at 1,029 metres above sea level, is the highest peak in West Lofoten. There are many mountain tarns and lakes holding fish. The landscape is marked by steep mountains and narrow strips of coast. Europe’s oldest rock types are here, about 3 billion years old. The western side, out towards the ocean, was inhabited until the 1950s. These days, people live on the eastern side of the island, where there are good harbours for the fishing fleet, freighters and leisure craft. There are many walking opportunities, either in the mountains or through one of the small, traditional fishing villages. SYMBOLS, SEE PAGE 32 Company TEL (+47) E-MAIL/WEB

VÆRØY AND RØST VÆRØY Værøy, the penultimate island in the Lofoten archipelago, has every feature typical of Lofoten all in one place: midnight sun, white sandy beaches, seabird colonies, and an historic but still active fi shing village. The Værøy mountains differ from those in the rest of Lofoten. Although just as steep, they are easier to ascend, offering wonderful views in all directions after little more than a brisk walk. Over 80 % of jobs in Værøy have some connection with the fisheries. In Lofoten, cod is caught in winter, Greenland halibut and saithe in summer, and herring in autumn. The huge colonies of sea birds on the outer edge of the Måstad peninsula on Værøy were an important and much needed food resource for the island people in former times. There were about 150 people living here. There were no roads to this spot and few good places to get ashore then. A visit to Måstad is often combined with a fishing trip or a boat trip to the bird rocks.

RØST Outermost in the Lofoten archipelago, about 100 km to the west of Bodø and 115 km to the north of the Arctic Circle, we find Røst with its 365 islands, isles and skerries. The largest of them, it’s highest point barely 12 m above sea level, is Røstlandet. Further south, the islands of Storfjellet, Vedøya, Trenyken and Hærnyken loom like gigantic monuments in the water. The entire population of the municipality is found on Røstlandet and a couple of lesser islands to which it is connected by roads. Here, too, we find the municipal administration offi ces, church, primary and secondary school, kindergarten, shops with post offi ce facilities, restaurants, hotels, airport, and fi sheries warehouses. The steep-sided islands south west of the inhabited island of Røstlandet are home to the greatest number of nesting birds anywhere in Norway.
