Young Northlander overcomes adversity and becomes youth Employee of the Year T
he Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and Ngāti Kahu Social and Health Services would like to acknowledge local Northland youth Trey Henry for winning the He Poutama Taitamariki (Youth Employee of the Year) Award. Trey, 25, was presented the award at the recent Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards held in Whangārei. This award recognises his incredible journey into sustained employment with Ngāti Kahu Social and Health Services based in Kaitaia. “We would like to congratulate Trey for his hard mahi (work) in not only becoming work ready but excelling in his chosen career and becoming a role model for the young people he is working with,” says MSD Regional Commissioner Eru Lyndon. “Trey embodies the essence of the award bestowed upon him and we look forward to following his journey.” The annual He Poutama Taitamariki (Youth Employee of the Year) Award recognises, acknowledges and celebrates young people who have had to consistently overcome challenges on their journey to employment. Trey spent time in the He Poutama Taitamariki (HPT) programme, which is a regionally-led initiative jointly funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD). The programme assists young people in attaining social connectedness, education, training and employment goals with the resilience to sustain those outcomes leading to happy, healthy and productive lives. Since securing employment with Ngāti Kahu Social and Health Services in August last year Trey has grown within the organisation to become a co-facilitator for
Cory James (Ngāti Kahu), Cera James (Ngāti Kahu), Marihi Langford (Ngāti Kahu), Trey Henry (Ngāti Kahu), Kim Ashby (MSD), Shannon Williams (MSD) Taitamariki programmes and has completed his Level 4 Certificate in Mental Health and Addictions. He has also enrolled to undertake specialist Addictions training in the new year. Ngāti Kahu Social and Health Services CEO Marihi Langford says her team has watched the growth and determination Trey has displayed to get to where he is today, and they are proud. He is an asset to his whanau, hapu and iwi. “He is continually faced with challenges and takes them on with confidence. He has
become an inspiring role model within his whanau, hapu and iwi and the young people he is working with,” she says. Ministry of Social Development team member, Shannon Williams recalls Trey being an introverted young man upon first meeting him and has been happy to see Trey flourish. “He is now a confident young man and it has been a pleasure to see him learn and grow. Trey says of his journey so far “After spending my teenage years in Auckland, I
returned to my home in Kenana, Kaitaia and found myself on the job seekers benefit with no real direction. I was referred onto the He Poutama Taitamariki programme with Ngāti Kahu Social and Health Services which helped me reconnect to my whenua and whakapapa. On this programme I found my true calling which is to help those who are in a similar position that I was in. I now help facilitate the programme I was once part of, and help young people from Te Hiku o te Ika to live up to their full potential.”

The judges were very impressed with this business, Olive and Ash. The owners have created a product that is tasty, and easy to ship - both throughout NZ and to potential export markets. Reduction of meat consumption is very topical, and the volume will only grow as global warming and land use concerns become more and more mainstream. Having the product as a quick and easily prepared meal that are familiar to consumers is a clever strategy that will resonate with a broad range of consumers. They also felt that targeting “reductarians”, Millennials and

This cafe makes plant-based food, a welcome addition to the town for non-meat eaters in particular, but also as an alternative food experience for meat eaters. What makes this place special are the two women who run the cafe, Sam and Hope Moorhead. Sam and Hope bring a new concept in food to this area. They have great personalities and their friendliness makes everyone who walks in there to feel welcome.

Sarahlee has proven that she is worthy of this award as a creative entrepreneur, using photography as a medium to bring something to life that only lives in the artist’s mind. This is evident in her written application, her understanding of her business, product lines, and her financial model has improved year upon year. This is Sarahlee Studio’s third time entering this category and the judges are delighted she is this year’s recipient with strength in these three areas: growth, marketing and customer development.

Celebrating business success
STEVE SMITH – CEO NORTHCHAMBER
T
he Westpac Northland Business Excellence Awards, is a powerful example of celebrating business excellence and the role it plays in our community. Through business, individuals can apply their talents to achieve their own aspirations and to provide service for others. If we can celebrate and respect these people, and foster a better understanding of the contribution business makes to the wider community, then this will go a long way to inspiring more young people pursue their own business adventure. Not only an opportunity to celebrate excellence, the Awards are a valuable business development exercise for every business that has the courage to enter. The self-examination and reflection that the process calls on, means the owner must critically focus on how their business works. The criteria around which these businesses are measured, is a customised version of the Baldrige Criteria. This is the best practice business excellence measurement tool and one that looks across a broad range of performance areas and then seeks confirmation of this through a number of KPI’s and documented process. While this provides a very useful measurement of a business’s performance, it may not necessarily be as useful for measuring success. This needs to be rigorously applied against the vision and strategic plan of the business owner and there needs to be an acceptance from the evaluator that not all business owners have the same interpretation as to what success is. For this reason success cannot be measured without a business first having set clear goals and unlike many large corporate businesses, the nature of Northland businesses mean that many of these goals are going to be closely aligned with personal aspirations and ideals (lifestyle). For many business owners, their personal goals and their business goals will need to be considered together, as each will influence the other. Having asked where the business owner wants to be in their personal life at some predetermined future date, will direct them as to what goals they need to set within
their business in order to get there. While it is valid to assess a business’s performance against its economic bottom-line and the systems and processes it uses, an enterprise may be ‘successful’ in spite of these indicators, if the owner’s goals are being achieved. It is the individual business owner who has made the investment, taken the risk and has set an expectation of reward. The personal nature of these rewards, means that it is not appropriate to judge whether they are right or wrong, although there may be cause to question how practical or achievable they are. The owner’s vision and it’s achievement is what energises and motivates them to take action. It gives a reference point against which they can focus, adopt innovative ideas and develop a level of resilience and sustainability that is so important. Of
course having set your goals, using good businesses practices as advocated within the Baldrige Criteria, will make those goals more attainable. Although high profile, the gala evening and announcing of winners is a relatively small part of the overall entrant experience. For most of the entrants it is the culmination of all they have learnt and practiced in their business life to date and could be compared to completing a mini MBA program. Often they would have planned to enter for well over a year and in many cases they may have been considering entry for even longer, but were waiting for their business to be ‘ready’ to enter. Spoiler alert, like deciding to start a family, it never is. Just do it! In truth, most businesses are constantly changing and developing to meet the
challenges of a dynamic economy and market, this demands that businesses innovate and evolve or ultimately fail. Just as businesses continue to evolve and change, so do the Awards. We are constantly examining how we can make the process more attainable, easier to participate in and more rewarding for everyone involved. In starting our preparation for Awards 2020, we invite past entrants and the business community to provide feed back on the Awards process to date for possible refinement of future events. Remember, there is rarely a ‘right time’ for making your first entry into this amazing process, but the sooner you do, the sooner your business will be able to consolidate a sustainable path into the future. The Key to Longevity
By Karen Amos, Westpac NZ Northland Area Manager for Commercial and Agribusiness when anchored to a long term philosophy. Changes to strategy should be shared and understood by your team in the context of the long term. Diversity Surround yourself with people from different backgrounds who can challenge your thinking. Encourage robust discussions where all opinions are valued. Highperforming teams challenge each other to achieve excellence, rather than waiting for the boss to do it.
I
am revisiting a topic that came up again at this year’s awards and was a feature of many of the winners: what is the key to long term success? Several winning businesses this year spanned multiple generations, while other entrants had been successfully in business for many years and have a strong outlook for the future. My predecessor and former manager at Westpac in Northland, Rod Parkinson, was very passionate about this topic. He was a great leader and mentor to all of us, focusing on key elements that created a stable, growing and highly-energised team for nearly two decades. Here are some of the ingredients he believed helped build a long-term achievement culture and an engaged team, which is a definite key to success. A Strong Sense of Why or Purpose This is about standing for something bigger than making money, exceeding KPIs or being number one. We engage and commit to a purpose that has meaning, and strive to make a genuinely positive contribution to our community and society as a whole. Strategy Anchored to Long Term Outcomes This does not mean being inflexible, because your strategy and tactics can and should evolve in a changing world. However, strategies often deliver long term success
Trust Frank and honest conversations can only work in a high-trust environment. Leaders should create a safe environment for team members to speak out and share their thoughts. If you want to create trust, you have to give it. Care Good leaders genuinely care. Empowerment Good leaders empower, share knowledge and let go (with the right controls, checks and balances in place). Leadership doesn’t mean being in control all the time. Achievement Culture It’s important to reward individual performance, but only if it aligns with strong team behaviours and the long term values of the organisation. Fun Environment We spend too much of our lives at work to not enjoy being there. Managing Underperformance Creating a fun environment does not mean avoiding conflict or courageous and honest conversations. Leaders should still recognise performance issues and step in when needed. Removing Barriers to Performance Good leaders either remove the barriers to performance or, even better, teach and

empower their teams to remove them. These ingredients don’t necessarily form the recipe for success, but they’re common themes to many of the successful businesses I’ve had the pleasure to work with over many years, as well as this year’s finalists and winners. So congratulations and thanks to everyone who took part. And to all who contributed to making the 2019 Westpac Northland Business
Excellence Awards a success, thank you.

A WORD FROM GREG ATKINS, CONVENOR OF JUDGES I’m sitting back writing this article following watching the Melbourne Cup and it hit me, how similar the race is to the Northland business excellence awards. Such a great line up of businesses but with better odds on those who have a track record, done the hard yards in different situations and have trainers and teams behind them to help them perform. Yes there were businesses jockeying for the win and it is great to recognise them for what they have achieved knowing they could be back to take a future win. This year’s Supreme winner Maungatapere Berries is a previous category winner that has grown with the above attributes and come back to win, well done to them and their team.
Innovate judging process
W
hen we look at the entries of the innovation awards we focus on "innovation". This is the process of translating an idea or invention into goods or services that create value for customers. So the focus is on "point of difference", originality and applicability – is the process one that can be done? and is the outcome going to be able to be successfully marketed? We also look at the process and at the size of the potential market, on top of that is the sustainability

of the process and the outcome. Innovation is not "business as usual", it is about creativity, vision, dedication and a mix of stubbornness focus and refinement. Failure and learning lessons from this make the process hard but ultimately very satisfying. You never lose, you either win or learn. As they both recounted to us “we bought Hone Heke Lodge and spent every cent we had and borrowed money off Victoria’s dad (Bob Kennedy) to help us especially in that first year when you have no idea really how much it will cost to get your business up and running. We knew exactly how we wanted the Lodge to look and feel and spent all of our time over the first 2 years upgrading the Lodge and getting it to a standard that we would be proud of. It was massively important to us to source and spend locally on all of the materials we used on the upgrade and to use local people

Why every business needs a coach WHITELAW WEBER
W
hether you work in an industry that requires years of training and study, such as medicine, or run a simple roadside fruit stall, there is always room for improvement. In fact, with constant change and disruption, every business is forced to improve and evolve, or run the risk of becoming irrelevant. Our business is no different. Our accountants train full time for 3 – 6 years and are required to undertake ongoing professional development courses. But with technology driving client expectations and regulation placing pressure on costs,
this expertise alone is not enough to run a sustainable, high-performing business. We believe every business should have a coach. Just like coaches of high performing athletes and sporting teams, business coaches optimise performance by: • Providing objective, timely insights • Looking at the business as a whole • Helping you set and prioritise goals • Aligning all the stakeholders • Holding you to account For the last 4 years, we have been part of a coaching group – leveraging insights and learning new tools from global business experts. Over this time, we have learnt that being held to account is key. Setting 90-day goals with monetary consequences is hugely motivating for accountants! One of our goals this year was to enter the Westpac Business Excellence Awards – to assess how we are performing against businesses across all industries. It was an interesting process and is really useful regardless of what sort of business you run or how long you have been in business. By taking time out to look at your business in its entirety, you understand what you are doing well and where the gaps are. Completing the entry form took a fair bit of doing. But nearly every member of the
team had input – from discussing processes, through to meeting with the judges. Irrespective of how we get on in the awards, we have already achieved our goal of benchmarking our business and identifying areas that need improvement. In fact, we have already implemented a couple of new initiatives around team culture and ensuring people take regular breaks. And in a curious
coincidence, we have just been ranked by the Chartered Accountants Institute of NZ and Australia as being in the Top 30 Accounting Firms in NZ. So why should every business have a coach? Because as businesses flourish, their owners and employees thrive, enriching families and supporting communities. We think that’s a ‘no brainer.’

K
IWI SHEDS NORTHLAND is making subtle changes in the way that sheds are sold in the Northern region. In an effort to assist our clients to navigate their way through the myriad of rules, regulations and interpretations of all things bureaucratic, KSN have chosen to work with shed buyers that are compatible with their business model. Directors Dean and Rob are really focused on trying to ease the pain and are dedicated to taking an approach which is more related to the experience than the volume of sales. We genuinely want to interact with our clients in a manner that is reflective of the old days when a “hand shake” was held in high esteem. This approach means that we are not going to work with everyone – we are not a “fast food outlet” so we try to work with people that understand and accept that in todays world it is difficult and time-consuming
working through the bureaucracy around consents. We have the resources around us that enable us to deal with most “curve balls” that are thrown our way – in fact we have resources associated that can do all aspects of the job from Earthworks through to internal fit outs – this allows us to provide the solution you require. We have never had a building consent application fail – 100% success rate – BUT sometimes it is very challenging. Our focus is on building to the enclosed shell stage only, But Dean has the equipment and experience to be able to deal with the site preparation and finishing work – ie Earthworks, yards, landscaping and fencing if need be. Recently we engaged with Kerikeri Mens Shed and local land owners John & Jillian Walst to build a purpose built facility at 28 Kapiro Road, Waipapa. This building and
what it will house is something to be seen –men of the mature age - working together on community projects and assisting each other with learning new skills in woodwork, engineering and technology – it’s a beautiful thing when a community can get behind something like this. Not only does it provide an outlet for retiring, retired and slowing down men to put their skills into action for community projects but it also provides a perfect environment for men to get together over a cup of tea and “chew the fat” about politics, the state of the roads and their own health. The benefits are immeasurable and Kiwi Sheds Northland is extremely grateful to be able to be part of this initiate now and going forward into the future – our NEW OFFICE will be located in this building and we will be members under the umbrella of men “slowing down”. Roll on 2020!

alt has been used in healing for thousands of years. The salt mines of Europe were rich in fine salt particles and workers experienced overall good health and freedom from chronic lung and skin conditions. A quality salt therapy facility consists of a halogenerator an air hygiene system. Mind, Body & Salt Wellness Centre in Whangarei has embraced the latest research. Salt is naturally antiinflammatory, antibacterial and absorbent. With the use of a halogenerator to grind the pharmaceutical grade salt to a fine powder, visitors to the salt room relax and breathe in the salty air and allow the salt to settle on skin. The microfine salt particles penetrate the respiratory tract and may provide relief to those with conditions such as asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, COPD, emphysema etc. Salt therapy may offer relief from productive coughs and allergies such as hay fever in addition to the symptoms of colds and influenza. Skin conditions also may be relieved by salt therapy such as eczema, rosacea and acne. The environment in the salt room is warm, relaxing and meditative. Mind, Body & Salt Wellness Centre has many happy visitors who have experienced the benefits of the salt therapy. Salt therapy is a safe and natural aid to existing medical treatments.

ince is a plant based food created by Olive & Ash which aligns with the recent trend in meat reduction, it’s a vegetable mince that delivers the taste and texture of everyday mince. The company is the result of Debbie and Nigel Stowe’s 20-year culinary journey, where they have created vegetarian foods and owned a plant based and gluten free cafe. The idea of Vince grew from their own kitchen. The couple wanted to give their family something familiar in texture and taste, with the same ‘meaty’ experience. And, in conjunction with Northland Inc and Massey University, they created a whole foods mince replacement made from local vegetables. “The hard part for people is learning how to start cutting down on meat,” says Debbie. “Eliminating one meal at a time, like meatless Mondays, is a challenge for traditional Kiwis. Vince is an easy replacement - a healthier option that’s good for the planet too.”

I Have a Dream is making a difference to kids in Northland Tamariki like Davontae are prime examples of how the I Have a Dream programme is changing the mindset and mana for many students in the Tikipunga and Otangarei area. We’re helping them make their dreams come true. I Have a Dream is designed to produce positive outcomes for the children involved, their whānau and the community they live in. By offering the services of a consistent caring adult (Navigator) for the 15 years of their schooling life, we help to ensure that

t’s quite normal for high school students not to know what they want to do once they finish school. It’s one of the hardest challenges young people face. Put into the mix some social and economic issues, and it’s not surprising that New Zealand has declining overall participation rates in tertiary education [source: Education Counts], with between 15% and 16% of school leavers unemployed or not continuing education or training (source: Education Counts). One of the many benefits of the I Have a Dream programme, is that our Navigators are able to help students figure this challenge out, both academically and socially. Meet Davontae - he is 14 years old, attends Tikipunga High School in Whangarei and he is a Dreamer who knows what he wants to be when he leaves school. Davontae has been involved in the I Have a Dream programme for three years now and he’s loved every minute of it from creating art and performing Kapa Haka to learning hospitality skills. confidence to I Have a Dream, “I have found that I have become more confident in my own skin and [my journey with] I Have a Dream has helped me achieve that.” Davontae says. During the middle of 2018, Davontae came to the realisation that his passion was in fashion and hair styling which has resulted in his desire to study fashion design when he finishes school. Davontae has already figured out his plan, “I’m going to study hard and attend Victoria University. My back-up is AUT but I’m going to make it into Victoria University. I want to achieve my NCEA levels 1, 2, 3 and university entrance.” Davontae says. Through Davontae’s relationship with his Navigator (Mo Matautia-Tepania), he is getting more support in his day to day life, both academically and socially. Davontae attends weekly homework sessions with Mo which keeps him up to date with his school work and he is also looking at applying for scholarships, which Mo will support him in completing. Davontae’s I Have a Dream journey is going so well, that at the end of 2018, he was awarded Dreamer of the Year at Tikipunga High School. Davontae was ecstatic, “I was so shocked to hear my name but so happy to be chosen.” Davontae said.
