Thankfully,I’veneverneededtheir overadecadeago,Iwasinthemidstofinterviewinga localflightparamedic,whenacall-outcamethrough andIwasinvitedtogoalong.Itbecameareal‘Day inthelifeof”experienceandIcouldn’tbelievehow, oneminuteIwassittingintheKensingtonhangar, thenminuteslaterwe’dlandedintheBayofIslands. BORN TO FLY
When ayoung SueDinkelacker expressedher desire to flyfor aliving, herparents,though gliderenthusiasts, adviseda differentcareerpath. Shetook theiradvice, but flying wasin theblood andshe soonfound herselfbackinthe air, albeit undera helicopter’srotors.
Thesedays,ifyouspottheNorthland RescueHelicopterinaction,chancesare it’sSueatthehelm,pilotingNorthland victimsandpatientstosafety.
“IgrewupinSouthAfricainafamilyofglider pilotsandMumhadacommercialaeroplane licence,”saysSue.“Mydaddesignedand builtandflewhisownsailplanes,whichwon championshipsandsetrecords.”
Bytheendofhighschool,shedecided wantedtobeapilot.That’swhenherdad herdownandtoldSueshewasunlikely getajobasapilotbecauseshewasfemale andthereweremanymilitary-trainedmale pilotsavailableatthetime.Shewasadvised torathergetajobthatpaidandflyglider funonweekends.Soshestudiedandwo asasecretarywhilesettingthreeworld speedrecordswhichstandtothisday
Aftersavingmoneyworkinginanadv agency,SueleftforanOEinAmericawher hadherfirsthelicopterflightat24-years wasabsolutelyhookedfromthefirstminut Iloveflyingingeneralbuthelicoptersar manoeuvrable.Helicopterscanflyintoc areaslikeforests,thenthere’swinching, atnightwithnightvisiongogglesorlanding hospitalroofs.Helicopterflyingissovaried challenging.”
ShereturnedtoSouthAfricaandwo herdadathiswoodturningfactory.
“ItoldhimIwantedtogosoloinahel Icouldaffordonlyonehalf-hourhelicopt lessonperfortnight.Thenthesecretaryo
flyingschoolleftsoIaskedtobepaidinlessons whilestayingrent-freewithmyparents–which ishowIgotmyprivatelicence.TheSouth Africangovernmentgaveonegrantayearfora commerciallicenceandIgotit.ThenIgotmybig breakwithmyfirstjobwiththelargesthelicopter companyinthecountry.”
Herfirstjobwasflyinga22-seaterSikorsky 61,somethingofanoff-shoreflyingbus.Sue thenendedupheli-loggingintheUnited States–flyinglogsoutoftheforestunderslung beneaththehelicopter.Otherjobshave includedflyingouttooff-shoreoilrigs,tutoring ataflyingschoolandtouristflightstothelikes ofvineyardsforleisurebutalsoflyingVIPs duringsome“interestingpoliticaltimesin SouthAfrica”
“Mycareerhastakenmeallovertheworld andI’vehadallsortsofadventures.Often,”she adds,“I’vebeenoneofonlyafewwomenin myfield.”
UponreturningtoSouthAfrica,Suegained hercaptaincyandmethusbandPete,a mechanicaldraughtsmanandwhatfollowed
wasanadventureofquitethedifferentkind; thecouplesailedacrosstheAtlanticonavery smallboat
“Iamdefinitelyanairperson–I’mnotinmy elementonthewater-soIfeelproudofmyself thatIcrossedtheocean.”
TheysoldtheboatintheUSAandflewto NewZealand.Aftertwodaysinthecountry theyrealisedNewZealandwashomeandSue’s ventureintoflyingemergencymedicalservices beganinWellingtonin2001,beforetakingona similarroleinHamilton,andthentransferring toNorthlandin2007.However,duetothe gruelling96-hourshifts,shereturnedtoflying tooilrigs.
Whenshiftswerereducedtoamaximum of12hours,shegladlyreturnedtoworkingfor NorthlandRescueHelicopterin2019.These days,Sueworksfour-dayshifts,whichusually includeonenight,andthenhasfourdaysoff
Acall-outwillcompriseacrewoffour; thecaptainandco-pilot(whichSueandher colleagues–thereare18pilots-rotate)and twoparamedics-onetocarryouttheroleof
wincherandtheother,therescueswimmer, ifneed-be.Thoughnomedicalbackgroundis requiredforSue’srole,shesaystheydowork asateam.
WhileSueadmitsthescenesbeforeher wereeye-openingwhenshefirstentered emergencyservices,shejustfocusesonherrole ofmanagingtheaircraft
“Theysendustosomeveryseriousevents anditwouldn’tbeeverybody’scupoftea."
Therearecertaincall-outsthathavestuck, butthemostsoberingaretheroadtraffic events.
“Theybringtomindhowimportantitisto drivetotheconditionsandputonyourseatbelt andtheroadsafetymessagesreallyhithometo you.Theyhavethemostimpactonme."
WhileSueisyettoundertakeanight-time searescuesuchastherecentlytelevised dramaticNorthlandfootagethatenthralled thenation,shehashugerespectforthepilots involved.Likewise,fortheflightparamedicsshe workswith.
“Theparamedicsdeservealotmore attentionthanwedo–we’rejustthedrivers,” shesayshumbly.“They’reintensivecareor criticalcarelevelparamedics,yes.Buttheycan alsobeawinchoperatorandrescueswimmer.”
Whenit’spointedoutthatitalsotakesmuch skilltohoveranaircrafttoenablearescuerto bewinchedontoanexactspot,sheconcedes:
“Wellyes,onegetstoexercisealltheskills I’vepickedupovertheyearsbyprovidinga stableplatformforthemedicstodowhatthey needtodo
“Idoenjoythewinchjobs,”Suecontinues. “Whetherit’soveraforestoramountain orboat,they’requitesatisfyingandyou’re workingasateam.Onceoverhead,youput thewinchmedicdownandit’saveryefficient waytoextractthepatient.Ijustfocusonmy jobbecausewehavetomakeplansonwhere wemightgoandcalculatefueletc.That’showI canhelpbest,bymakingsuretheflightissafe. Clinicaldecisions,Ileaveuptothemedics.”
Sue’sday-to-dayworkisoftentransferring patientsbetweenhospitalsfromKaitaiaand RawenetoeitherWhangāreiorAuckland.“I quiteenjoythose.We’reprobablythefastest

Inbetweencall-outs,dutiesincludebook work,practisingproceduresonthesimulator andstayingwell-versedincurrentlocalweather conditions.
“Forapilot,NewZealandisavery challengingenvironmentwithitsunpredictable weather,hills,andremoteareas.Wegetsuchan amazingvarietyofcall-outs,anythingyoucan possiblyimagine.It’sintenselyinterestingand satisfying.Whenyouareflyinginstormsand cloudsyouhavetobeaccurateanddisciplined butit’swhatwetrainandpreparefor.”
Fornightshifts,thereisaccommodation sothecrewcansleeponsite.Toimprovenight vision,pilotswearnightvisiongogglesattached totheirhelmets
Suedescribes,“Thenightvisiongogglesgive syntheticvisionandtaketheambientlightthat youmightgetfromthestarsandthemoonand amplifyitmanytimes.It’sallmonotonewithno colour,withquiteanarrowfieldofview.Ittakes abitoftrainingtogetusedtothembutthey areanamazingpieceofkitthatallowsyouto actuallyseeenoughtolandinapaddockinthe middleofthenight.”
Byday,thereisarequirementtobeairborne withintenminutesofanemergencycall-out Shouldacallcomein,pilotsarealreadyintheir uniforms,thehelicoptershavebeenprepared forthenexteventualityassoonastheyland fromthepreviousjoband,onceaboard,the crewcarryouttheirroutinechecklist–“We’re likeawell-oiledmachine”.
Though,shehasnoticedapatternwithcallouts:“Theyseemtocomeatmealtimes,just asyou’reabouttohaveyourfirstbite–youdo learntoeatquickly!”
Sue’sloveofflyingdoesn’tjustinvolve aircraft–shealsohasapassionfor birds,evidentwithhermulti-awardwinningsculpturesandwoodcarvings and,whengrounded,shecanoftenbefound withachiselinhand.
“Icanrelatetobirds.IfindthetimeIspend flyinggivesmeawonderfullyfreshperspective ontheworldandanawefortheperfectionof birds,whicharemyfavouritestosculpt.”

Buthermostmajorworkwillsoonbe ondisplayattheTutukakagreenwhenit’s installedinSeptember.Titled ‘Moment of Release –RobertWebb and the Albatross’,the bronzedsculptorwasSue’sideatocapture themomentWhangāreiNativeBirdRecovery CentremanagerRobertWebbreleasedAlbert thealbatrossbacktothewildin2005.
Thelife-sizeprojectisacollaboration betweenSueandportraitsculptorDellPryor. Thebronzewillstand2.2mtallanddepict Robertlaunchinga3.2mwingspanalbatross.
TheHaastClub(www.haastclub.com)was anotherideaofSue’sandonewhereshecan combinehertwopassions.Namedafterthe now-extinctHaasteagle,theinternational clubisforthosewhohavebeenrescuedor transferredbythehelicoptertosharetheir stories,aswellasraisingawarenessfortheNew ZealandRescueHelicopters
Membersjoinbypurchasingasmallcreation bySue,suchasapinwiththeheadoftheHaast eagle,withhalfthepricegoingtowardsaNew Zealandrescuehelicopteroftheirchoice.
Thoughaseldomoccurrence,oneofSue’s favouritepartsofthejobiswhenpatients returntothankthecrewwhosavedthem. “Otherwisewedon’tgetthefeedbacktofind outwhathappenednext.It’sjustlovelytosee themrecovered.”
OnthetopicofjobsatisfactionSuechuckles: “Well,wedohaveagoodviewfromtheoffice, weseeremarkablesites.
“IrememberwhenwewenttoWaihekeand landedatnight.Ihadthenightvisiongoggles onandIwaslookingaroundasweweretaking offandIcouldseefourlittlethingswalking alongpeckingwiththeirbeaks–itwastwo pairsofkiwiand,yestheymaynotfly,butI thought,whataprivilegetoseethem.Youget momentsofabsolutedelightinthisjob.We alsoseelotsofshootingstarsandeachoneis agoodwish.”
Robert and RobynWebb’s lifetime of volunteer work forNorthland’sbirds will soon be immortalised in bronzeforever with the sculptureofthis scene.
Sue attended woodcarving symposiums whereshe learnt to reach outside her comfort zone using chainsaws and large chisels on giant logs under time pressureand in public.

Thirty-twoadultsandteenagers makeupthecast,mostlyfrom acrossWhangārei.Eachofthemhas sacrificedtimewiththeirfamilies andsocialcalendarforthelastfourmonths, rehearsingatleastthreenightsaweekand overweekends.Manyofthecasthavecareers innursing,teaching,ownsmallbusinesses, arepublicservants,studentsandmore–their dedicationtoallpartsoftheirliveswhile simultaneouslyrehearsingashowisadmirable.

What canbe betterthanwaking up to thesmell of freshlybrewed teawithoutyou or anybodyelsegetting outof bed? Thispleasure firstbecamepossible131 yearsago in England.
In1892,SamuelRowbottompatentedan automatictea-maker.Itwasdesignedtobe usedatthebedside,gettingmorningtea readywhenthealarmwentoff.Itranon clockworkandgasboilingakettleandusing steamtoforceboilingwaterintoateapot. Howeverquirkythisinventionwas,itdidnot takeoffuntilelectricitybecameavailable. Afullyelectricversionwaspatentedin1933. Notlongafter,WilliamThornton,inassociation withGoblin,patentedasimilartea-maker.His nextmodel,manufacturedfrom1936,wasthe
firsttobesoldunderthename‘Teasmade.’ Thisnamebecamegenericforalltea-makers.
AdvertisementsforthefirstGoblin Teasmadestatedthatit,“Boilsthewater, makesthetea,lightsthelamp,wakesyou up.”Alltheownerhadtodowassetthealarm, fillthekettle,andputtealeavesintheteapot thenightbefore.Triggeredbythealarmclock, thekettlewouldboilthewater.Steampressure forcedtheboilingwaterinthekettleoutof thespoutandintotheteapot.Whenthekettle disconnected,thelightsandalarmcameon.

Amongthe moreunusual cars at thePackard MotorMuseum is our1972MorrisKimberley carsfrom1970to1972.Theywereintendedto replacethewell-knownAustin1800.
TheAustinKimberleyanditssistercar, theTasman,weredesignedspecifically forAustralianbuyersandwere intendedtomeetthetastesofthe AntipodeanmarketsmorethantheEuropeans. However,justtoconfusepeople,whenthecar wassoldinNewZealand,itwasrebrandedasa MorrisKimberley.
TheKimberleywasbasedontheearlier Austin1800.LeylandAustraliaproducedthese
Atthetimeoflaunch,theyofferedan advanceddesigncomparedtothecompetition producedbyFord,HoldenandChrysler,inthat theirboxybodywasapropersix-seater.The carwasalsofront-wheeldrive,(makingitquite economical)adeparturefromtherear-wheel driveoftheopposition.Thesix-cylindermotor wasquitepeppyandthecarcorneredwell. TheTeasmadereacheditspeakinpopularity inthe1960sand1970sandwasonevery weddingwishlist.Despiteitsformerpopularity, by1980theclassicTeasmadewasonitsway out.However,the21stcenturysawtherevival
ofitspopularityandthenewTeasmadehas beenmanufacturedinChinasince2009.
Today,wirelessinternetmakesitpossible fortheautomatictea-makertobecontrolledby voiceviahomeassistantorsmartphone.
However,thefront-wheeldrivewasnot popularwithbuyers,anddespitetheroomy interior,theyweren’tlargeenoughtocompete withtheChryslerValiant,FordFalconorHolden Kingswood.
TheKimberleyandtheTasmanwerenot particularlydifferent.TheKimberleywasthe moreexpensiveversionwithahigher-powered engine,doubleheadlamps,asopposedtothe
singleheadlampsoftheTasman,andamore up-marketinterior
LeylandAustraliaalsodesignedapick-up versionbutthatwasneverproduced.Inthe end,theKimberleyandTasmanweren’tthe successLeylandhadhopedfor.

The two-and-a-half-hourceremony wasattendedbyaround200 kaumātuaandmembersofthe WhangāreiHapū,Whangārei DistrictCouncillors,CouncilandNorthland TransportationAlliance(NTA)staff, consultantsandbuildingcontractors.Many peoplespokewithfeelingatthetraditional kawangawhareceremony,whichfeatured speechesfromtheWhangāreiHapū,followed byrepresentativesofCouncil,interspersed withwaiatafrombothsides.
Council’sChiefFinancialOfficerandproject leadAlanAdcockspokeoftheinvolvement ofHapūintheproject,buildingcultural narrativesintothebuilding–fromthe inclusionofarongoāgarden(traditional medicinalgarden),toakāpehu(compass) pointingtosignificantlandmarkswithin thearea,tothepanelsofilluminatedstar constellations.“Thekawangawhareblessing ceremonywasasignificantsteptowards openingthedoorsofournewciviccentre toourcommunityforallcustomerfacing
