“Ihadabreak-uplastyearfromalong-term relationshipandgavemyselfayeartohavea wildtimetogeneratesomesteamycontentfor mynextshow–Ihadplansfor(Frigid)tobean ironictitle.However,itturnsoutI’mjustnotcut outforlivingasteamylifestyle.

“Frigidhaskindofbeenaself-prophecy allmylifeafterbeinggiventhattitleathigh school.It’skindofinmypsyche. Frigid isall aboutdatingandsexandtheabsurdityof itallandthepressureweputonourselves, especiallyinthisdayandage.It’saloveletterto growingupintheearly2000swiththeblow-up oftheinternet.”

Followingthebreak-up,shemovedoutof theflatshesharedwithherex-partnerand others,includingherbestfriendof20years, ChrisParker(2021winnerofCelebrityTreasure Island),whoisafellowcomedianandactor.But eventhoughBrynleynowflatswithonlyone other,sheissurroundedbythedistractionof housework–henceworkingfromthecafé

TheChristchurch-raised33-year-oldhad noaspirationsofbecomingacomedianor actressuntilhighschool.Infact,duetogrowing upwithhealth-consciousparents,theselfdescribed“sugarfiend”wantedtosellice creamswhenshegrewup

Butahighschoolteacherapproachedthe “classclown”aboutjoiningtheteamforthe schooltheatresportscompetition.“Ididit andlovedit–fromthenonI’vejusttakenany opportunityIcantomakepeoplelaugh.”

Shealsodiscoveredaloveforactingbut, knowingthistobeanoft-unsupported,rollyour-eyescareerchoice,shekeptherpassion toherselfandtoldeveryone,includingher parents,shewantedtobeadramateacher

“EvenwhenIwaschosenasoneof30 studentsamongsthundredsofapplicantsto studyatToiWhakaari:NZDramaSchool,Istill wastellingeveryoneIwantedtobeateacher Thenoneday,inmythirdyear,oneofmyacting

Asitturnedout,herparentsweresupportive.

“IwasveryluckythatIhaveawesome parentswho’d,basicallythink,ifyou’re enjoyingit,thenwe’reveryhappyforyouto pursueyourcareer.”

Thoughherinstinctleanedtowardcomedy, shewaschallengedatdramaschool,oftencast indramaticroles,suchasmourningmothers orLadyMacBeth.“Inthelastyear,Ididsome comedyandIthinkmyclassmateswere surprisedthatIhaditinme!”

Likemanyactors,Brynleystruggledupon graduating.

“Idefinitelydidthegrind.Iworkedasagym receptionistfrom5am,thenwouldfinishthe paidjobatthegymanddosillylittle(unpaid) Shakespeareshowswithfriends.Therewerea coupleofyearsofthishusslebut,lookingback, thatistheonlywaytogetyourselfoutthere.

FollowingamovetoAuckland,shejoined theimprovgroup Snort,whoperformweekly showsattheBasementTheatre.Throughthat, shemadefriendsandconnectionswhichlead toherfutureroles.

“Itwasdefinitelyunexpectedbuttohave yournamecalledoutinrecognitionafter workingyourbuttoffforsomanyyears,thatis prettyawesome!”

“Becauseyouguysdon’tgettobepartof theComedyFestivalcircuit,Imademyselfpart ofthecircuithere.I’dloveforpeopletosee theshowandsomecomedy,ifnotforme,to supportOneOneSix.”

Mother,DawnVivienneLorna Stanfield,wasbornin1932. Shewasthesixthchildof 19siblings-ninegirlsand tenboys.Herfather;adamagedWW1 veteran,hermother;ayoungfarmgirl, whoboreherfirstchildat16andherlast at46.Growingupthroughthedepression andwar,movingfromonefarmtothe next,share-milkingwastough,butitwas duringthistimethatMotherrealised youcouldbepoor,butyoudidn’thave tolookpoor.Lookinggoodwasthekey. Shebecametheseamstressofthefamily, creating‘silkpursesoutofsow’sears’and continuedtodosoallherlife.

Growingup,Motherwasour fashionista.Wewereafamilyofnine;fivekidsandour grandparentsundertheoneroof.Abusyexistence,yet somehow,betweenmilking,beforethedistrictnursecalled todressgrandma’slegs,orthementroopedinexpectantofa cookedlunch,Motherwouldhavefoundthatlittlewindowof timetowhipupthosehotpantsshe’dseeninamagazineat thedoctors.Itwasherpassion.

“Girls,whatdoyouthinkofthis?”she’daskwithsuch enthusiasm,we’dhavetolikeit.Alwaysaperfectfit,we’darrive thefamilysocial ti thela fashions hing

bootsthatno-oneinthedistrict couldorwouldemulate.We’d sheepishlymakeourentrance,sadly lackingourmother’sconviction, whileshewalkedproudlybehind us.Tothisday,Istillhatestanding outinacrowd!!

Mother’sfascinationwithimage (“watchyourfiguresgirls”)turned intoafamilybusinessinthemiddle 80s.Whowouldhavebelievedthat herethosallthoseyearsof‘looking good,feelinggood’,wouldresult inabusinessofprovidingjust that?Weadoptedherenthusiasm eventuallyandluckilyourpassion forpeopleandsalescomplimented thebusinessmodel.Thirty-eightyearslater,wearestill hereendeavoringtoinspirepeoplewithstylesMother wouldhaveloved.

Motherwas59whenshedied.Iremembershe wasverydisappointedshewasn’tgoingtosee60and receiveherfirstpension.Cancerisamiserablesentence whichmanyofushavehadtoendure,watchingloved onesgraduallydisintegratebeforeoureyes,snatching thosepreciousconversationsintheraretimeswhen theyarecomfortable.Weburiedherinthelastgarment shemadeforherself
