NZ STABILISES ITS POSITION IN TOP HALF OF COUNTRIES IN LATEST PISA RESULTS.

N

ew Zealand has stabilised its position among the top half of countries in the latest international study into educational achievement. We’ve also moved up the OECD rankings in maths, science and reading in the 2015 Programme of International Student Achievement (PISA) study.

New Zealand student performance was relatively consistent up to 2009. While we remained above the OECD average in maths, science and reading between 2009 and 2012 performance declined. The latest results show we’ve halted that trend and stabilised. PISA, which looks at the achievement of 15 year olds, shows New Zealand has broken into the top ten rankings for reading against the 69 other countries in the study. New Zealand is 10th for reading achievement – up from 13th in 2012. New Zealand has also overtaken other countries in science with a ranking change from 18th to 12th and in maths from 23rd to 21st. Dr. Craig Jones, Deputy Secretary for Evidence, Data and Knowledge at the Ministry of Education welcomed the improvement in New Zealand’s country rankings shown in the latest PISA results. “Our science and reading students have consolidated their place in the OECD rankings above students from advanced economies and education systems like Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Switzerland,” Dr Jones says. “PISA results are an indicator of the overall performance of our education system, along with other international studies such as the recently reported TIMSS study in science and maths achievement.” The average scores of the 15 year old students, tested

in 2015, sit comfortably above the OECD average in all 3 subjects. New Zealand scored: 513 in science while the average across countries was 493, 509 in reading compared to an international average of 493, and 495 in maths compared to an international average of 490. “New Zealand has one of the highest proportions of top achievers across reading, maths and science. 6% of our students were in this category compared with an OECD average of 4%. Furthermore, 20% of all students assessed are among the top performers in at least one of these subjects. This is better that the OECD average of 15%. There is still more to do for certain groups of students however. We need to improve achievement rates for M ori and Pasifika students. Socio-economic status is a higher predictor of achievement than for many other countries, but the 2015 results show it plays less of a role than previously, which is a positive trend. The PISA findings give us part of the picture, but they are only a snapshot. We know that students in that same year group attained record high pass rates for NCEA Level 1 across all ethnicities last year,” Dr Jones says. Our 15 year olds are also solid performers when it comes to the different areas of science that are assessed in PISA – physical systems, living systems and earth science. PISA tells us that more New Zealand students at this age are enjoying learning science than many of their OECD peers. This is showing a positive effect on their achievement.

Similar to the Trends in International Science and Maths Study (TIMSS) released last week, PISA highlights that there is still more work to do to lift the achievement levels of M ori and Pasifika students who still, on average, have lower rates of achievement than other ethnic groups. “Both the TIMSS and PISA data will provide us with plenty of additional insight into the strengths and weaknesses of New Zealand education. This will help inform our policy development going forward as we look at how to support our students further in succeeding in their educational endeavours,” Dr Jones says. We are undertaking a series of initiatives already announced by the Minister. These include: The targeting of operational funding to students most at risk of educational underachievement. Communities of Learning | Kahui Ako are focused on learner-centred pathways, so all students can benefit from the best teaching practice and school leadership we have. Another initiative that’s showing a lot of promise for the future of maths and science achievement is Curious Minds. This is a joint programme with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to increase school engagement in science, technology, engineering and maths (known as STEM). Curious Minds is encouraging more girls into STEM subjects, enabling students to learn directly from technology intensive businesses in their community, linking science to M ori language, culture and identity, and funding projects that give students STEM learning opportunities. WHAT YOUR CHILD LEARNS AT ECE

A

t their ECE service or kohanga reo your child will learn skills that will consolidate and build on what they have already learned at home.

WHAT WILL MY CHILD LEARN? Early childhood education (ECE) will help your child develop into a positive, confident and capable individual, and form a strong foundation for later learning. Your child will learn how to: • form friendships • play and explore • be courageous and try new things • ask questions and have a say • meet people outside their whanau • learn to relate well to other children in a group • sing, dance, and play games • think and solve problems • take turns, negotiate, and share

• understand their own feelings and those of others • learn about disagreements and how to manage these • learn about words, numbers, and how things work • have conversations with children and adults • begin to understand and make sense of the world around them. Te Whariki – the ECE curriculum framework Te Whariki is the curriculum framework for the ECE sector. It covers the education and care of children from birth to school age and is used by ECE services and kohanga reo to guide children’s learning opportunities.

THE WOVEN MAT Te Whariki means ‘the woven mat’. ECE services and kohanga reo use the curriculum’s principles and strands to weave a learning programme for your child. Your child’s strengths and interests, all the things they learn as part of their family, and the ECE service or kohanga reo’s learning opportunities are woven together to contribute

to your child’s unique learning story. This story forms the beginning of your child’s early learning journey, to share with your family and whanau, other ECE services and kohanga reo and eventually school and kura. Your child’s ECE service or kohanga reo will record and communicate your child’s learning story with you in different ways. ASPIRATIONS FOR YOUR CHILD Te Whariki is based on the aspirations that children grow up: • as competent and confident learners and communicators • healthy in mind, body and spirit • secure in their sense of belonging • secure in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society. For further Information read or download a copy of Te Whariki on the Ministry of Education website www.education.govt.nz.

TIPS FOR PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS TIPS FOR PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS At least once a year, and usually a couple of times a year, you will have the opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers. It’s useful to understand how these meetings work and know what to expect from them. DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING BEFORE THE MEETING? Meetings usually take about 10 minutes so it’s worthwhile to make some notes to make the most of the time: • think about what you have noticed about your child’s work - parents often notice things when they are helping their child with homework • talk to your child about how they feel about school and anything that they are really enjoying, finding too easy or too difficult • ask them if there’s anything they want you to talk about with the teacher. If it’s a three-way conference they can ask these questions • read any recent school reports and write down any questions you

• What do they do well? • What do they need help with? • What can I do to help? • Do they participate (take part) well in class? • Does my child seem settled at school? How do they get along with others? • Are there any areas for concern? • What’s the best way to contact you if I need to discuss anything further? PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS AT SECONDARY SCHOOL Parent-teacher meetings at secondary school can be quite different from the one’s you’ve attended at your child’s primary or intermediate school or kura. Meetings are often held in the evenings and you’ll be given a time to meet with each of your child’s teachers. They are likely to be for only 5 to 10 minutes and you might attend up to 6 meetings in the same evening. If you have something you would like to discuss about your child that does not relate to a particular subject, you are best to discuss that with their home Introducing teacher, or you can ask to meet Pat Newman from with the dean. CAN I TALK TO THE TEACHER OUTSIDE OF A PARENT-TEACHER MEETING?

have about them. WHAT SORT OF QUESTIONS MIGHT I ASK? • Is my child progressing as expected?

Yes, you can talk with any of your child’s teachers anytime. It does get more difficult to be

CHOOSING A SCHOOL

M

any children have the option of one local school to go to. If you do have more options, then choosing the right school or kura for your child is important and can make a big difference to their happiness and wellbeing, as well as how well they do at school. WHAT SCHOOLS CAN I CHOOSE FROM?

have before and after school care? Will your child be able to play or meet up with friends after school? • do you have to pay to go to the school? • does the school have a uniform? • what schools are your child’s friends going to?

To see what’s available a good place to start is the Ministry’s ‘find a school’ tool.

THEN LISTYOUR EDUCATION PRIORITIES

If you need more help to find a school or kura in your area, or a particular type of school, you can contact your local Ministry of Education office.

Your priorities will depend on your child’s needs and your circumstances and preferences. What are your must-haves and what could you compromise on? Here are some examples of priorities that you might see as important: • the school or kura’s approach to supporting children with special education needs or talents • a bilingual unit or te reo Maori schooling • a particular education philosophy or special character • whether your child would suit a large school or a smaller one

WHAT’S IMPORTANT WHEN CHOOSING A SCHOOL? Think about the practical things • are there any schools that family or friends have recommended? • do you live in the school zone? • how will your child get to and from school? Is there a safe route to walk or cycle, or is someone available to take them and pick them up? Is there a school bus? • under 14s need to be supervised before and after school. Does the school

Brandon Te Raki – Youth Guarantee: Automotive engineering “The tutor is a real stand out. He expects discipline especially around using safety gear but he’s consistent and fair. He’s always willing to help, will go the extra way to make sure you get there, and we can even bring a car in to work on. I’m now doing something I enjoy all day. If you’re out there and not doing much, or you’re not into what you’re doing, come here and find something to study. There are heaps of opportunities and you’ll move your life forward.”

Bob Mare – Commercial transport

“The quality of the tutoring was priceless and so much more than I expected. It opened my mind and has changed my life and I did well in class. We got several tickets and the tutor kept changing things on us so we would get used to the flexibility that is needed in transport. The other students in my course were fully involved in their learning and I recommend anyone who wants to better themselves or upskill looks at what’s available at NorthTec.”

Ben Hooper – Electrical engineering “I’m loving learning new things and am doing things I didn’t think I could do – like repairing appliances, wiring up lights, and learning to be safety-minded. I didn’t try much at school but I’m really achieving now because I have a purpose. The tutor makes sure we all get through and has even made maths, which I find tricky, easier to understand.”

Katherine Tasker – Applied management “I love the diversity of our course content. There are different qualifications within one class which makes the study really interesting, plus we get to meet a range of people coming in to study different aspects. The info is so usable for ordinary life because we touch on things like budgeting, law and communication.”

Joey Waddell – Architectural technology “One of the key reasons for coming here is the tutors. They are real, they’re knowledgeable and experienced, and they treat us like peers. They really encourage us to push beyond our own limits and to expand enough to take in new learning and experiences. I did business administration here last year and enjoyed the vibe and the level of motivation so much that I decided to start on this architectural journey.”

Lequesha Rutherford – Te Reo “NorthTec is close to home for me and I like socialising with the people here. Learning Te Reo is already boosting my confidence. It’s bringing back early memories of when I first heard it spoken. I love learning more about Mäori protocols and am very respectful of them.”

Sacha Pou-Tito – Mechanical engineering

“I love learning, especially the welding and how to use machines like lathes correctly. It was challenging because I finished school years ago and a lot of my classmates are school leavers familiar with machines that I’d never seen before. If you’re stuck or need help the tutor is there for you and is really encouraging and we have a great team of students. If someone is behind everyone helps them get up to speed.”

Lyndon Hopkins - Pest operations “I love working outside and have always had an interest in conservation. I’m keen to help the next generation spend more time outside and to serve as a role model for them in some way. We have this amazing natural resource in the North and I want to encourage youth to enjoy getting out amongst it.”

Gail Kirkland – Business administration and computing “I hadn’t studied for 20 years so there were heaps of challenges, but I was hungry to learn and the tutors kept us driven and encouraged. I am so grateful for the opportunity to study here at NorthTec. The support zone here is huge whether it is for career path, health or finance, and it has given my son and myself a new start in life.”

CHOOSING AN EDUCATION INSTITUTION

Y

ou can choose from a wide range of study options to earn qualifications. But how can you be certain you will receive quality training or earn a recognised qualification?

NZQA manages quality assurance processes for the tertiary sector (except for universities, which have their own system). An education institution can be any organisation supplying education and/or training and/or assessment services. For more information, see the link ‘About education organisations’ on their website.

CHECK OUT YOUR EDUCATION INSTITUTION Before enrolling with a tertiary education organisation, you should check: Is the education institution registered? Registration with NZQA ensures that a private training establishment (PTE) is providing a sound and stable learning environment. Institutes of technology and polytechnics, universities and wa¯nanga are set up separately by government legislation so do not need to be registered. Is the programme approved? Programme approval confirms that a programme is based on clear and consistent aims, content, outcomes and assessment practices which lead to a recognised qualification. Is the organisation accredited to run the programme? Accreditation with NZQA confirms that an organisation can deliver an approved programme.

PALMERSTON NORTH CAMPUS

Has the organisation had a recent external evaluation and review (EER)? External evaluation and review (EER) is a periodic evaluation of a tertiary education organisation. It provides an independent judgement of the organisation’s educational performance and capability in selfassessment. A list of providers is on the website. If you are a student from outside New Zealand, you should also check if the organisation has signed

up to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. If you have any doubt about the status of a provider or the claims it is making about a programme, then contact the NZQA Quality Assurance Division. TARATAHI EXPANDS ITS PROGRAMMES

T

aratahi is offering a wider range of programmes in 2017, including an Equine programme being offered in Northland, says Kerry Mitchell- Regional Manager Northland – Auckland. Our programmes commence on 20th February, with other start dates available throughout the year. Taratahi is taking enrolments for short courses of up to 13 weeks, 6 months and one year programmes, including Equine, Sheep and Beef, Dairy, Apiculture and Vehicles, Machinery and Infrastructure. “Due to increased Government funding, Taratahi has a greater variety of programmes and more places it can offer – which is good news for the Northland community.”

I want to continue on to Level 4 and one day maybe I will manage a sheep and beef station - that’s my goal”. Kerry says Taratahi has a history of success in Northland particularly with the Level 3 “Work Ready’ programme. “Tutors support the students into the workforce, liaising with local farmers to find ‘a good fit’ for students and employers alike. The 2016 “work ready” dairy students had a 100% completion rate, with 80% moving into employment and 20% signing on for further study at Level 4. “That result is a testament to the professionalism and commitment by our team who go the extra mile to ensure our students graduate and get jobs.”

Taratahi offers qualifications from Level 2 through to Level 4 in Northland giving students the skills and training, making them sought after employees. “Taratahi prides itself on strong community networks which are vital in supporting students to get jobs. Driver’s license assistance, budgeting advice, life coaching or health services all help ensure student success” says Kerry.

Two of the Taratahi students enjoying the outdoors

Students Jasmine Webb and Aleena Toi say the Taratahi whanau atmosphere played a big part in their success. “You’re not just one in a crowd, I feel like the tutors and staff really care about my future. I started off after completing Year 13 doing a general skills programme and loved it so much I have signed on to do the Level 3 Sheep and Beef programme,” says Jasmine. Aleena says she was a real townie, “There are no farmers in my family but I have always been interested in farming.

EVOLUTION SCHOOL OF BEAUTY AND MASSAGE OFFER A VARIETY OF COURSES TO STUDENTS “I have never completed anything in my life until now!” “The best thing I have ever done!” “It was just something to do for a few months but I loved it and now I am hooked. I am coming back!” The 2016 graduates celebrate their success

T

hese are just a few of the great comments graduates make when they receive their certificates at the end of their course at Evolution School of Beauty & Massage in Whangarei.

“The truth is, the students don’t just learn skills to become a beauty or massage therapist. They learn communication, teamwork, understanding of people and they make great friendships along the way” says Lorna Clowes, Director. “I had a dad come up to me at the latest graduation and tell me (very emotionally) how his daughter has just grown personally throughout the course and come out of her shell. He told me how proud he was of her and how proud she was of herself”. Our entry is open - there are no age, experience or school result limitations. Our courses are designed to be short and get you back into work in the quickest possible time. We have male and female students, young and the young at heart. It’s a great industry to get into as it is still one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. This year is the last year we can offer our massage course as 21 week course unfortunately. As of 2018, the course will be at least ¾ of a year; maybe even 12 months. So, if

you are thinking of gaining a massage qualification and are not able to commit to a full time one year course, then now is the time to study with us before all the changes. Our beauty courses will be changing soon also but for now we are happy to keep offering them as a shorter course of 12 – 21 weeks depending upon the level and type of course. We are only a small, specialist school and so we get to know our students really well – and their families. Because we are close knit, students are able to discuss any issues openly with their tutors and we do everything we can to help our students succeed. its lovely seeing graduates keeping in touch on Facebook and meeting up even if they are overseas, they always catch up when they are back and they usually pop into the school to say hello. Graduates are always welcome back with open arms and never leave the Evolution family.” The courses offered at Evolution are NZQA approved and they are short so no time is wasted with things you don’t need or will never use in the industry. Student loans and allowances are available.

Courses run from as little as 12 weeks through to 21 weeks and there are a few different ways to study. There are options to take International Examinations to be able to work anywhere in the world or on cruise ships or superyachts. You could start on a level 3 Beauty Consultancy course and work up to the level 4 Beauty Specialist and then onto the level 5 Swedish Massage course or you can just jump straight in on any of the levels. You choose. If you are not sure, the lovely team at Evolution School of Beauty & Massage are there to help and talk you through all the options. The next intake of students is February 2017 and places are filling up so don’t hesitate if you would like to apply. It’s not all about painting nails and faces though. It’s much more fun than that! So, if you are a prospective student wishing to gain a lifetime qualification, pop in and have a look around – 115 Lower Cameron St, Whangarei or call on 09 438 6583.
