Study with Evolution School of Beauty and Massage “ We get a lot of feedback about how we are a bit of a family here”, says Yvonne Palmer, school manager at Evolution School of Beauty & Massage in Whangarei. “We are only a small specialist school and we get to know our students and their families really well.”

So not only can you learn some excellent skills which will last a lifetime, but you can also make some excellent friends who can also last a lifetime. Yvonne says its lovely seeing graduates keeping in touch on Facebook and meeting up even if they are overseas, they always catch up when they are back and they usually pop into the school to say hello. Graduates are always welcome back with open arms and never leave the Evolution “family. The courses offered at Evolution are short and no time is wasted with things you don’t need or will never use in industry. Time is spent doing the things that are required and utilised. Courses run from as

little as 12 weeks through to 21 weeks, with a number of different ways to study.

You can start on a level 3 Beauty Consultancy course and work up to the level 4 Beauty Specialist and then onto the level 5 Swedish Massage course, or you can jump straight in on any of the levels. You can choose! If you are not sure, the lovely team at Evolution School of Beauty & Massage are there to help and talk you through all the options. “There are some big changes happening right across every qualification on the NZQA framework this year,” says Lorna Clowes, Director. “What this means for us, is that our short courses may well become much longer as of next year as we will have to fit in with the new qualifications as they are rolled out. So if you are thinking of training in this industry and you are a little time poor, then now is the time to train whilst the courses are structured around school hours and families.”

Have fun while you learn The next intake of students is July and places are filling up fast, so don’t hesitate if you would like to apply. You can be qualified by Christmas which is when most employers need more help so it’s a great time to graduate. Its not all about painting nails and faces though. Depending on which course you choose, you will learn about the body and

how it works, you will also learn about the science behind some of the ingredients used in products. You will cover some business studies and when time allows there are guest industry speakers and presenters. You also get lots of hands on experience – you even get to work on real clients and of course, you get to have all the treatments yourself! So if you are a prospective student wishing to gain a lifetime qualification or even if you just fancy some pampering by the amazing students then contact us.

Make thisWinterYourTime to Study! If you’ve decided to study in 2015, now is the perfect time to enrol at NorthTec. Many of our programmes have a new intake of students in Semester 2, starting in July.

Tynele Muir – Graduate, Youth Guarantee Hospitality

Whether you want to get back into studying after a long time out, or have a career firmly in mind, NorthTec can help you reach your goals.

Tynele came to NorthTec to learn about hospitality, after struggling at school. She loved the practical element of the NorthTec programme, and the fact that, as a Youth Guarantee student, she was able to try out other industries.

All our level 2 programmes are fees-free to students of any age, making them a great starting point for wherever you want to get to. And for young people aged 16 to 19, we have a range of feesfee youth options to put you on the road to further study or a fabulous career. Students in this age group can also benefit from extra support and guidance, and even free transport to and from classes. If you know what you want to study, visit our website at www. northtec.ac.nz to check out the details for individual programmes, from start dates to study fees to programme contents. If you’re not sure, why not look at one of the following options? The level 2 National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing is an excellent all-round programme for anyone wanting to gain general office skills. You’ll learn the basics of business administration, communication within a business environment and computing, including management and protection of data, word processing and spreadsheets. It will help you gain entry-level employment in reception duties, clerical assistance, customer service, word processing, data entry, and office support, and send you out into the workplace with confidence in your abilities. And best of all, the programme is free to all students. If the beauty industry is what makes you happy, why not try NorthTec’s Certificate in Beauty Therapy? This level 5 programme will set you up for a career which you can practice locally, nationally or internationally our programme provides you with knowledge and skills that align with the requirements and expectations of New Zealand and international beauty therapy industries. You’ll learn how to consult with clients and provide competent professional beauty therapy services in a variety of settings, preparing you for the workforce. The programme covers all aspects of beauty therapy, including facial and body treatments, manicures and pedicures and epilation. Students learn to provide professional skin care and make-up treatments, and also cover salon health and safety. You’ll study in our purpose-built salon and also get the chance to gain an internationally-recognised City and Guilds qualification. With a critical worldwide shortage of science graduates, you might want to look at our lab-based programmes. The level 5 National Diploma in Science is a great option because it gives you two qualifications – in the first semester you’ll complete the National Certificate in Science, and in the second you’ll gain the National Diploma in Science (Technician). Both are at level 5 and will give you a head start, whether you choose to go on to higher level study in this field or want to go straight into work in environmental management, water quality management, or a chemistry-related career. You might also look at business and management positions for which organised and scientifically-trained candidates are being sought. The hospitality industry is another area where good staff are always in demand. The New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service is a level 3 qualification designed to give students the knowledge and skills to serve in cafés and unlicensed restaurants, bars or clubs, and restaurants which provide table service. You’ll learn all about kitchen health and safety, customer service, food preparation and service and also pick up some barista skills. The qualification leads on to the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 4) with strands in Restaurant Services and Quick Service Restaurant Services, and can start you on your career pathway within the hospitality industry, giving you experience in kitchen and front of house operations. NorthTec also runs a hospitality programme aimed specifically at 16 to 19-year-olds. The Youth Guarantee Hospitality programme gives young people the chance to taste different sectors, while specialising in the food service industry.

She said: “I’ve only ever wanted to cook – since I was nine years old. I do the meals at home, make cakes, and have already catered for a birthday party. This course was close to home, is free, and is really working for me. I don’t feel I have dropped out – I feel I am creating a career.” Tynele really enjoyed all aspects of her studies: “It gives us a taster of lots of industries – including outdoor sport and rec stuff, which was a surprise. We do hiking, take tags off kiwi, and go kayaking. We all do general subjects then choose our specialist option, and obviously mine is hospitality.”

She found that the way the tutors relate to their students is a refreshing change from school: “It’s a lot less stressful for me here. The hands-on work is varied and the tutors are passionate and willing to stay after hours to help us. After this I can do other hospitality courses, then get a job in a restaurant. One day I’d love to open my own restaurant.”

Tips for Parent-Teacher meetings At least once a year, and usually a couple of times a year, you will have the opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers. It’s useful to understand how these meetings work and know what to expect from them.

Do I need to do anything before the meeting? Meetings usually take about 10 minutes so it’s worthwhile to make some notes to make the most of the time: • think about what you have noticed about your child’s work - parents often notice things when they are helping their child with homework • talk to your child about how they feel about school and anything that they are really enjoying, finding too easy or too difficult • ask them if there’s anything they want you to talk about with the teacher. If it’s a three-way conference they can ask these questions

• read any recent school reports and write down any questions you have about them.

What sort of questions might I ask? • Is my child progressing as expected? • What do they do well? • What do they need help with? • What can I do to help? • Do they participate (take part) well in class? • Does my child seem settled at school? How do they get along with others? • Are there any areas for concern? • What’s the best way to contact you if I need to discuss anything further? Parent-teacher interviews at secondary school Parent-teacher meetings at secondary school can be quite different from the one’s you’ve attended at your child’s primary or intermediate school or kura.

Meetings are often held in the evenings and you’ll be given a time to meet with each of your child’s teachers. They are likely to be for only 5 to 10 minutes and you might attend up to 6 meetings in the same evening. If you have something you would like to discuss about your child that does not relate to a particular subject, you are best to discuss that with their home teacher, or you can ask to meet with the dean.

Our outdoor environment is beautiful and stimulating. All teachers are retrained annually in teaching swimming. Our IT systems are the latest available.. We are about to start a major rebuild that will see 6 older classrooms demolished and replaced with 10 new ones built to the most modern Learning Environment standards.

improvement, commitment to our bicultural environment and the positive relationships between staff, students, whanau and the wider community ensure we maintain our position as leaders in education. Exciting plans are underway for the building of thirteen new classrooms, the first of which will be ready for the start of 2016. These will complement other outstanding facilities we currently have such as dance studios, theatre, state of the art technology block and three gymnasiums.

You can also often talk to the teacher in person for brief discussions without needing to make an appointment, just make sure you approach the teacher well outside of class times. If you want to have more time for a longer discussion you are best to make an appointment.

Can I talk to the teacher outside of a parent-teacher meeting? Yes, you can talk with any of your child’s teachers anytime. It does get more difficult to be connected into school or kura at secondary level, but it’s still important to talk with the school or kura and work with them to support your child.

Our children are the reason we exist as a school. We believe values are crucial, and that every child deserves a holistic education covering all curriculum areas and life skills, not just Literacy and Numeracy. Our one and only school rule “At Hora Hora we look after each other”, forms the basis for the behaviour we expect from all..

t’s with great excitement that I look forward to taking on the role of Principal at Whangarei Boys’ High School. My focus initially will be on getting to know the students, staff and

families who make up the Boys’ High community as I hold a firm belief that schools should be an integral part of the community and respond to the needs of the community.

It’s clear to see that the needs of some of the community are being well served when we have a student win a New Zealand Scholarship Premier Award in 2014 but we must ensure we are meeting the needs of all students academically, through sports and in arts and culture. Early Childhood Education makes a difference By Rawiri Brell, head of early learning, parents and whanau at the Ministry of Education

Why is it a good idea for children go to kindy, play centre, kohanga, or other early learning education? The reason is that early learning helps children to be confident and curious about the world. It also helps them do better when they start school or kura. Even before they start going to early learning, your child is learning. They are learning through everything they do, see, feel, smell, taste and hear; everywhere they go; and through everyone who talks, smiles and plays with them. Research shows that children who are involved in quality early childhood education _ (ECE) benefit in many ways, and that their family and whanau and the wider community benefit too. Early learning services build on the early learning your child is already doing at home with whanau, on the marae or at church, or playing with friends. Early learning can help your child learn important skills that will help them do well later in life. Early learning also helps your child learn to get on well with other children and with adults by learning to make friends, to share and take turns, and to co-operate. It also teaches them to listen to others and to communicate their own ideas. And they learn to be independent and to take responsibility for others’ needs as well as for their own. Making the transition to school is also easier for kids who have had quality early childhood education. That’s because children who take part regularly in quality early learning are likely to be confident and curious about the world.

Rawiri Brell, Ministry of Education Early learning helps your child to become life-long learners. Talking, singing, and listening to stories build children’s language skills and help them to love books and reading. Painting, dancing, making music, dressing up, and pretend play help to develop children’s imaginations and creativity. Puzzles,

number play, and counting games help children to understand maths concepts. Building or construction activities, helping to prepare food, caring for plants and animals, and playing with water and sand help children to learn about maths and science concepts. Continued of page 8
