A word from our CEO

NZ CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE NORTHLAND

Tony Collins, CEO - NZ Chambers of Commerce Northland

W

elcome to this 2017 Business 2 Business Publication. NZ Chambers of Commerce Northland is proud to be involved in this publication and we thank our member businesses for their support. This publication provides the opportunity for our members to help differentiate their businesses from others in a crowded market and reinforce the role they play in Northland’s business community. Our region like any other is strongly reliant on business for the economic activity it provides and the other social well beings that a vibrant business environment can underpin. Businesses build and sustain strong communities; provide a network of economic and social relations and contribute strongly to local causes. With the relationship these businesses have with their communities they are more likely to spend more money locally and this multiplier effect

benefits the local economy. The Chamber exists to help our member businesses and the wider business community to achieve success. It is to support and inspire business vitality and growth. As not-for-profit business membership associations, the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth. We want better businesses in Northland and we do this by helping businesses improve their capability and advocating for an environment in which doing business is easy. Businesses are only as successful as their owners and managers. They operate in a dynamic, changing environment that requires the business leader to constantly and deliberately build on their management capabilities. Most of us would like to be successful at whatever we choose to pursue particularly if it is something that we are

passionate about or that has a negative financial impact if it were to fail. It is the individual business owner who has made the investment, taken the risk and has an expectation of some reward. The attractive nature of the owner’s aspiration and their future desire is what energises and motivates them to take action. It gives a reference point against which they can focus, adopt innovative ideas and develop a level of resilience that is so important. This is what ultimately differentiates one business from another and provides them with the best opportunity to grow their business and succeed in their endeavours. As well as tradition and experience, the Chambers offer up-to-date and informed thinking on topics as wide ranging as transport and infrastructure, employment, local and central government initiatives, policy change and contemporary business issues; advocacy and lobbying on behalf of their business communities; and support for a wide range of business tools, resources and advisory services to help business succeed. - See more at: www.northchamber.co.nz

ARC Security - New Build Security Specialists

7

W

ith hundreds of new building projects underway around the Whangarei District, ARC Security is working hard to ensure the new homes and businesses under construction will be well protected on completion. Growth in Northland’s building industry is again peaking, with latest statistics showing 131 building consents were issued in February alone, valued at $44 million.

ARC Security owners Andrew and Rachel Chuter are proud to be providing excellent local service to so many new home and business owners. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to alarm installations, as well as new technologies now available around CCTV cameras, intercoms, fog cannons and electric gates. Andrew says that planning security for your new home or business can seem like yet another decision to make amidst all the building madness. That’s why he and his team keep the process simple and stress-free so your new security system gives you genuine peace of mind today and in the future. “All we need is your building plans and we can put together ideas and quotes. Everyone has different needs and budgets, so we tailor every system to suit the individual home or business owner.

“It’s definitely more cost effective to pre-wire your security system during the build, with our team working alongside your electrician before walls are lined. Even if your budget means you can’t activate the whole system straight away, at least all the infrastructure is there, ready when you are.” The range of home and commercial security products available today is endless. “We offer fully wireless systems, a full range of options for alarm monitoring, unique codes for all members of the family, pet friendly sensors, remote control access, smoke sensors, panic buttons… you name it, we can do it.” Once your system is in place, ARC Security take care of your monitoring with guaranteed 24/7 service.

A new way of keeping people – and dogs - safe

M

ost dogs live up to their reputation as “mans’ best friend’ but having around 10,000 registered and numerous unregistered dogs in the Whangarei district means there is plenty of scope for things to go wrong – for people and dogs alike. A local business has taken on a leadership role in promoting dog safety and responsible dog ownership in the local community to help ensure that every dog-human interaction is a positive one. Security company Armourguard has been represented in the Whangarei district for more than 30 years and is best known for providing guard, patrol, noise control, parking enforcement and cash management services. Recently it branched out to also manage Whangarei and Kaipara District Councils’ dog registration, dog control, pound and animal control services. “In the past, our involvement with dogs most likely involved our security officers keeping well clear of them when going on to premises,” laughs Armourguard’s Whangarei manager Warwick Taylor. “Now we have specialist dog management educators and dog control officers, and also two dogs – Scrappy and Diesel – as honorary team members!” These canine helpers play a starring role in a new programme that Armourguard is rolling out to Whangarei and Kaipara primary schools in conjunction with www.kidssafewithdogs.co.nz.

Children are taught how to keep themselves safe around dogs – an important skill given that the incidents of dog bites are on the rise. Armourguard’s dog education pilot programme is still in its infancy, but is already gaining great feedback. Warwick Taylor says Armourguard also aims to make sure dogs are well-looked after. “Our dog control team does a lot of education work with dog owners. For example, dogs don’t bark lots because they are naughty; they bark because they are bored, anxious, lonely, poorly trained or overly territorial. “Educating owners is the first step to educating their dogs.” Sometimes re-homing ends up being the best approach for dogs and their owners. Through its management of the Whangarei pound, Armourguard works with the SPCA to find new homes for abandoned and confiscated dogs, cats and other animals. If you’d like to give a dog or other pet a second chance, then visit www.whangareispca.co.nz and click on the ‘Adoption’ tab for more information.

Armourguard provides tailored solutions for all security requirements, everywhere, every day. • Cash in transit and processing solutions • Static guards • Patrols • Alarm response services

Did you know that everything you communicate leaves an impression?

W

e leave impressions whether we choose to or not. Everything we do or say, our body language, the facial expressions we wear all create an impression.

There’s a lovely story by Paolo Coelho in his book “Like the Flowing River” called ‘The Story of the Pencil’. It’s about a boy watching his grandmother write a letter. The boy asks if his grandmother is writing about him. She says she is, and that she hopes her grandson one day will be like the pencil she’s using. The boy looks at the pencil thinking it’s like every other one he’s seen. She shares with him the five qualities of the pencil that will help him to be at peace with the world should he choose to be guided by them. The five qualities of the pencil are: 1. You’re capable of great things, yet remember there’s a hand guiding you called God, and He always guides according to His will. 2. We need to stop writing every now and then to sharpen the pencil. The pencil suffers a little but afterwards it’s much sharper. We too must learn to bear certain sufferings as they will make us a better person. 3. The pencil has an eraser which allows us to rub out any mistakes. Correcting something we did can help keep us on the road to justice.

4. What really matters in a pencil isn’t the wooden exterior, but the graphite inside, therefore we should always pay attention to what is happening inside us. 5. The fifth quality? A pencil always leaves a mark. Everything we do in life leaves a mark so we should be conscious of that in our every action. What marks or impressions are you leaving?

BFS is raising the bar on safety training

Dedicated to helping New Zealanders stay safe.

W

ould you know the procedures to follow if an emergency occurred? Do you know how to use an extinguisher in case of a fire? Building & Fire Services provide training for a range of different topics including Fire Suppression and Warden, Workplace Safety Awareness, Spill Control and Hot Works. These are offered in Specialised Courses that are Industry Specific. All our courses can be presented either face to face or online with audio, video and written material. Because the learning material is presented in different formats, we can cater to all requirements and all learning styles ensuring everyone understands the information presented. Each course has a written reference booklet that students can keep and use within the workplace along with a certificate for the students learning record. The face to face courses have a practical section where the students can have a hands-on experience with the equipment they would use within each topic/course, for example: in the fire suppression course, each student gets to use an extinguisher to put out a fire in the live fire simulator we provide. The online training system on the other hand, is a great alternative for refreshers and office staff who may not require the full hands-on experience. Our new division of Building and Fire Services – “Training 4 Safety” – is being launched soon and will house and expand our course variety which we believe will assist a range of

different industries with their training requirements. Along with our innovative training courses, we provide other services such as Building Warrant of Fitness Checks, IQP inspections, Fire Equipment Service and Sales, Evacuation Training and Drills. We pride ourselves on helping to keep New Zealanders safe with their building compliance and personal training and development. CDL Records Management

Collect, Index, Barcode, Store and Manage: CDL Records Management

C

DL Records Management offers state of the art archival facilities, right here in Northland. We offer complete document retrieval, indexing and archival solutions, along with secure on-site document destruction. Many businesses lack the facilities required to manage their records efficiently and securely, which is why CDL offers a seamless archival storage and data management service. Our services can be broken down into three distinct areas: Collection & Indexing From the moment our clients contact us, we ensure a seamless service. If documents need to be collected, we collect them. If records are unboxed, we sort and box them. If documents consist of mixed media, we will carefully separate them. Once our clients’ records are safely within our temperature-controlled archival facility, we proceed to index and barcode each box, allowing us to quickly and easily identify both their contents and location. Storing & Retrieval We maintain strict temperature and humidity control

over our archival storage facility, and guarantee a secure, monitored storage environment for sensitive documents. Should a client require the retrieval of a record, we are able to quickly locate the document or data, and (depending on the type of record) we are even able to offer a ‘scan on demand’ service. Secure Destruction Many of our clients require the secure destruction of their more sensitive documents. This process calls for a high level of accountability; including the sealing and removal of records to be destroyed, and their supervised and recorded secure destruction. We offer a professional document destruction service from collection to destruction - all right here in Northland. CDL Records Management is both Northland owned and operated, and manages the secure handling of records for commercial entities and local governing authorities. We pride ourselves on our world-class archival storage facilities, and our ability to provide a 100% secure record storage and destruction service.

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS SAFE WITH SECURELY STORED DOCUMENTS COLLECTION INDEXING BARCODING STORING MANAGING DOCUMENT DESTRCUTION

CleanScape

Bring out the best in your home or business with CleanScape

C

leanScape residential and commercial property cleaning and maintenance services provide Northland with unparalleled home and business care. We started as a small, family-run business, however our business expanded into specialist areas including commercial cleaning, sensitive equipment maintenance and cleaning, commercial property care and high-level security clearance cleaning. We have become one of Northland’s premier business cleaning services, and have continued to improve our offerings to suit. Our commercial services include a unique checkpoint scan system, which is pre-set in cooperation with our clients. Our cleaners scan the barcodes at each prearranged point during their cleaning schedule, which is visible to our clients via their secure online portal, and is recorded in the CleanScape database. This system is especially valuable for high-security areas and hazardous environments, where close surveillance of entry and exit is required.

CleanScape enjoys a close partnership with her sister company, Northern Districts Security. The benefits of working so closely with a security company are selfevident: commercial cleaners are required to work outof-hours shifts, which has the potential to leave your premises vulnerable at odd times. With CleanScape, you can be sure your cleaning schedule fits hand in glove with your security - effortless and safe at all times. CleanScape cleaning services also offer grounds maintenance and residential property care; making us a simple solution for all your property needs.

CleanScape fills the need for trustworthy, reliable, and 100% secure commercial cleaning and maintenance services, with all of our staff signing non-disclosure agreements prior to the commencement of contracts, and site-specific training in place for all industry requirements. Creative Northland

C

reative Northland has an ongoing commitment to making sure the arts sector in Northland is dynamic, thriving, influential and productive. We are funded by the Whangarei District Council, Northland Regional Council and Foundation North who enable us to provide quality events, workshops, support and advice to the creative sector in the region.

Our team Our small team of six, based in Whangarei work hard to support creative organisations and individuals in their endeavours. We aim to make Northland a lifestyle choice for new businesses and families, working in partnership with local and central government and in the private sector.

What we do We offer advice and support to those seeking to take their creative endeavours forward with marketing and communications support, assistance with artistic projects, touring opportunities, education and specialised resources to develop and sustain our creative community. We also offer funding advice through workshops and one on one conversation’s. In some cases we will offer a letter of support for funding applications. We also have a series of social media workshops planned to help creative’s grow their reach and business opportunities. The team also keep extremely busy organising some of Northland’s key events which include:

ArtBeat – This is Whangarei city’s biggest annual

interactive arts festival held in summer each year at the beautiful Cafler Park in the centre of the city. 2017 marked the 21st anniversary of the event and was a huge success, with a 8000 – 10000 strong crowd enjoying the festivities and the opportunity to get creative all for free.

25

The Whangarei Sculpture Symposium - A biennial

event where artists from around the country and the world gather for 10 days to create sculptures from wood and stone based on a theme. This is a phenomenal event on the nationwide arts calendar, with several of the artists from our 2016 event claiming that it was one of the best symposiums in the country. The winning piece is bought by the Whangarei District Council who installs it on the Whangarei Sculptured Walkway for the whole community to enjoy.

The Northland Youth Summit Arts Festival – This two day event gives 60 of Northland’s youth the opportunity to engage, network, express ideas and learn valuable skills outside of the school environment. The 2017 September summit based in Dargaville offers the participants a chance to take part in a variety of workshops facilitated by experts in the fields of film & video, music, painting, theatre & performance and 3D digital mapping. These experts will help the youth turn their ideas and stories into actions in whichever medium they choose. At the conclusion of the summit the stories will be presented, performed and filmed by the participants making it a true collaboration of the stories and voices of Northland youth. All of the images from the summit will become part of the ‘Projecting Youth Futures’ 3D projection mapping project and toured around the region. Finally, we produce practical resources for the arts sector such as the Northland arts directory on our website, our events calendar, a weekly newsletter highlighting what’s happening in the region, social media coverage of events and exhibitions in Northland and we are currently working on the development of a new Northland art guide to promote our artists and galleries to the rest of the country.

private valley in the heart of the bustling coastal village of Tutukaka, legend has it that this was the resting place of the voyaging canoes. With a fresh spring in the valley, and a natural sun trap, it certainly has plenty of good energy.

Lodge9 made use of the Tutukaka Marina upgrade, up-cycling the salvaged wooden board walks, and original bollards and marker poles, to create a groovy courtyard space, with lush tropical greenery along with a saltwater pool and cedar sauna. Inside Lodge9 the energy translates to a calm relaxing space with bespoke furnishings, original artworks from local artists, including Shane Hansen, Steve Moase, Paul DuFlou and an incredible hallway entrance piece by Emily Karaka. Six private rooms, with a communal shared space, three double doors opening into the courtyard, it is a resort style retreat that balances the modern whilst acknowledging the past. Nespresso machines throughout, filtered natural spring water on tap in each room, and to enhance the natural calm, chemicals have never been used in the clean and upkeep – so it is a completely organic zone. With a massive attention to detail the handmade pottery for Lodge9 by Akke Tiemersma is in daily use, served with the gourmet continental breakfast and evening bites.

An amazing floor to ceiling fireplace makes this an intimate space that takes luxury, and makes it homely. Adjacent to Lodge9 across the brick and wood tropical courtyard, Shed7 is a unique function centre, with its own commercial kitchen, high tech conference facilities and indoor space. Weddings, boutique management retreats, yoga workshops, and cooking classes. This events venue can cater from 20-80 seated, or 200 stand-up. A perfect compliment to Dive! Tutukaka’s focus on the Tutukaka Coast, and the Poor Knights Islands and based in a secluded valley in the heart of Tutukaka. Alongside Perfect Day, the liveaboard Acheron, and the familiar blue & yellow boats, Lodge9 and Shed7 enhance the offerings in this South Pacific paradise. Book a romantic weekend away, or a productive business retreat, or celebrate a family occasion - a world away in the heart of Tutukaka.

Dr Shane Reti - MP Whangarei

I

am frequently working and travelling through the communities that make up the Whangarei electorate and there are encouraging signs that our economy is beginning to hum. Two recent independent reports have shown Northland is a region on the rise. Economic analysts, Infometrics, have tipped Marsden Pt/Ruakaka to be an economic hotspot in the next 5-10 years. More recently a report released by Maxim Institute around regional development, shows Whangarei is projected to be one of a handful of regions to not experience population decline in the next 20-30 years. One of the biggest ways to ensure we reap the benefits of growth is to create and improve infrastructure that meets increased demand. I’ve been beating that drum for some time and lobbying hard for Northland to get its fair share of roading investment. I’m delighted that NZ Transport Agency is looking to upgrade State Highway 1 to four lanes between Whangarei and the Ruakaka roundabout. In the two years to June 2016, nearly 3,000 people moved to Whangarei with a potential $52M or more per year injection of new money into the local economy. This is good news for our region. Despite the encouraging signs, there is plenty of work to do. We need to get the Hundertwasser project across the line, we need to address the shortage of skilled workers in the manufacturing and construction sectors, we need better airline services in and out of Whangarei, and we need to lift

our game in delivering better outcomes in the social sector. I’m working hard on these issues and invite your feedback on them too. If you’d like to meet with me or send me your comments, please email shane.reti@parliament.govt.nz. I look forward to hearing from you.

Staying in Balance Naturally

T

here are five elements in Chinese Medicine: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The Chinese believe that these elements all relate and interact with each other - take wood as an example: water nurtures wood, wood makes fire burn better, wood grows in the earth, and metal can chop wood down. Chinese medicine relates this thinking back to human health, believing that there needs to be a balance between all of the elements in order to keep our body in ideal health. This theory not only applies to our body, but also all other things within our lives and within nature, too. Our whole body is working like a giant great designed machine. And Chinese medicine guides us and helps us to live well by keeping the balance of all aspects of life. Desan Health is a Whangarei-based Chinese medical therapy and acupuncture clinic owned and operated by Sophia Xiao-Colley, a medical professional trained in China with a 5-year Bachelor degree in Medicine. Originally from Xiamen, Fujian, Sophia has been registered in NZ since August 2012 with Acupuncture New Zealand and today she lives with her family on an organic certified orchard. Sophia spent her five-year university life in Guangzhou, making her fluent in 3 Chinese languages: Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Cantonese. She is a keen learner for up to date innovation and new research about healthcare.

Planning for your future starts today

T

he idea of retirement is simple. Having worked hard your whole life, it’s the time where you are supposed to be able to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour. In reality, it is never that simple and most people, instead of looking forward to this stage, are nervous about the financial implications that it brings. Time and time again, we are seeing the most common response to continue to ignore the pending retirement by burying ones’ head in the sand, even if it leads to denial or a form of financial anxiety. Simply, to have a lifestyle you enjoy in retirement you need to make some decisions today. In order to make the right decisions you need a strategy and an action plan and most importantly; execution. For most people, retirement is not about investing in financial products, because in reality few people have surplus money to invest. In fact, a high proportion of people are going to be going into retirement with a mortgage and with no savings, so buying shares or financial products is not an option on any level. So instead of investing, the first step to retirement is to make sure you are mortgagefree before you hit retirement. If you are not mortgage-free then you need a plan to sort this. Time is of the essence, more so than ever before. The sooner you start, the sooner you take control back. Remember, before you start, you must diagnose your financial situation. You need to understand what your retirement will look like and what it will cost. For most, there is going to be a shortfall between what you are likely to have and what you will need. A bridge must then be built between the two. For many this is a very sensitive process that takes some bravery to confront. You need to be free of emotion. It can be challenging but you simply need to be getting ahead because falling backwards in not an option. Whilst everyone’s goals are different and their situations are unique, universally, planning for your future is not supposed to cause anxiousness and retirement should not be ignored. Whether you are just starting out or looking to build on your financial position, you can get ahead faster with the guidance of a financial personal trainer.

hey are fired up about their businesses – and willing to take risks and break new ground to make exciting things happen. Elevate CA have amassed a diverse group of clients who are moving and shaking in their chosen field - from tourism operators through to local businesses that sell cool stuff to the world. And all sorts of passionate business owners in fields like construction, contracting, professional practices, retail, property, manufacturers and importers. The Elevate CA crew enjoy working with each of them. “Elevate CA is an exciting take on the traditional accounting firm”, says director Fraser Hurrell. “We provide all the services expected of an up-to-the-minute Chartered Accounting business – and we have the skills and experience you would expect from one of the larger firms in town. But our modus operandi is different”, he says. “We are not an accounting factory with an egg timer on each desk. Rather we’re energetic advocates for our clients’ businesses – and we love working hard with business owners who we enjoy”.

Director Rebecca Brennan explains the “Elevate” brand is about the ethos to work with clients in moving upwards to achieve their business goals – and it is also reflective of the positive can-do attitude they bring to everything they do. Rebecca adds “Of course, we are all members of Chartered Accountants Australia + New Zealand – which brings an

assurance of quality and professionalism. Hence the CA designation in our brand”. “We are all about using cloud solutions like Xero to make short work of processing the numbers”, says director Dean Subritzky. “Then we roll up our sleeves to help you achieve your goals. We believe in Northland and Northland business”. If you’re ready for a breath of fresh air and energy on your business team, Elevate CA are keen to hear from you.

harassment and employee dishonesty. Not only are we here to help employers help themselves, but we can also step in to give support and representation at mediations, disciplinary meetings and personal grievance claims, including matters that escalate to the Employment Relations Authority and the Employment Court.” “If you have an issue with staff, call us first. Early intervention to get the process right could save you thousands of dollars. Often when ex-employees win a personal grievance case, it’s because the employer has not followed the correct process.” Employer Services Limited’s offices are at 82 Maunu Road, Whangarei where the team comprises Murray Broadbelt (Director); Wendy Silver (Consultant/Admin); Barry Nalder (Consultant/Investigator); and Alan Gordon (Health and Safety Consultant).

roviding fire safety services, Building Warrants of Fitness and Test & Tag services, Fireco has become one of the most recognised fire and building safety services in Northland. With a head office based in Whangarei, Fireco is proud to announce that they are now opening branches throughout New Zealand, expanding to meet the demand for these specialist services. ‘There’s a true need for service providers who have a deep understanding of fire safety and building safety regulations in New Zealand,’ says JP, Director of Fireco. ‘After concentrating our services in Northland for such a long time, we’ve finally decided to expand into locations throughout New Zealand. This decision has come about purely due to the heavy demand for experienced, qualified fire and building safety service providers. We have a long history within this industry, and we’re very excited to be offering our experience to more locations.’ Fireco not only inspect, maintain and supply fire safety equipment, manage BWOF certification and Test & Tag appliances, but they also offer high quality fire equipment training for businesses, employees and corporate environments. ‘We often find that, once we have designated and installed appropriate fire safety equipment, the knowledge base of those working within the

building needs to be improved. Our fire equipment training courses are a hands-on, practical way for staff, management, and building owners to familiarise themselves with their own fire safety equipment, giving them the skills they’ll need if - or when - they’re ever faced with a fire.’ JP and his team at Fireco are excited to be expanding their business throughout NZ, however they assure their clients that the high quality of service will not be affected. ‘We might be getting bigger, but our clients come first, always. That will never change!’ Contact us on 09-972 7581 Visit us at 10 Cameron Street Whangarei www.fireco.co.nz

HB Architecture: The Quiet Achievers

O

ne of Whangarei’s most successful architectural firms is also one of their quietest – you won’t find billboards advertising our latest successes, nor will you notice us on social media or on the radio – at least, not often. It’s not because we don’t believe in the value of advertising – far from it! It’s simply that we’re usually so deep in our latest projects that we don’t often come up for air. And when we do, it’s to take another deep breath before plunging back in. We’re architects, and we live and breathe our designs. The HB Architecture team has had many formal awards and successes over the years, but in our eyes the simple achievement of a completed project brings a pure sense of satisfaction that is hard to top. We are proud to say that our number of completed projects is extremely high within the industry; and while some are quiet visions realised for private individuals, many others have received national accolades for their scope and functionality. We take great pride in our ability to align our client’s needs with their vision and the practical considerations of the proposed construction site. When a client comes to us, they gain the insight of a team of experienced architects, architectural graduates, draughts people and technicians, with a practical background not often found within the industry. This insight gives our developed designs a depth and consideration that leads to a more efficient end construction.

Award-winning Waitangi Treaty Grounds Recently HB Architecture were awarded the NZIA Auckland Branch Award for our work on the Visitor Centre at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. The Waitangi Treaty Grounds project fully engaged our team, as we contemplated all aspects of the existing structure, the functionality, the environment and the spiritual and cultural import of the space. We couldn’t be happier with the result, and the community response has been outstanding. HB Architecture – discover our passion

How do I know it’s the right time to sell my business?

O

ne of the most common questions we’re asked is: when should I sell my business? And the answer isn’t straightforward. The biggest misconception in business sales is that businesses only sell when they are not doing well. Why would you sell when you are doing well,… right?! The long and the short of the story is that the best time to sell is when business is up BUT that there is never a good time to sell a business! Just like there never seems to be a good time to have babies, have lunch in a busy work schedule or time to get your car serviced.

So, all the arguments aside; when IS the best time to sell your business? Like any other commodity, business sales are driven by supply and demand. In a recession people are buying jobs; owner operated businesses of a lower value, and when the economy is good people look to get a higher return on investment than the bank can give them (or property which is not everyone’s cup of tea). When selling a business you are dependent on the market or industry you are working in, the demand created by external forces and you are dependent on what the purchaser wants. To make your business as appealing as possible (and standing out from the other many businesses on the market) you have the best chance to sell when your turnover and profits are increasing! There are many businesses on the market. If your business doesn’t look good compared to others, it will reflect in the offer. It is not hard to see why people want to own their own business. The perception is often completely wrong, but most buyers of small businesses are thinking of the freedom of not working for a boss, a better income, freedom with more time to spend with family etc…. Even though it is not the truth, these are the motivators for most aspiring business owners to be. Personally as a Business Broker I find January to March/April the best time to find buyers. People are looking for their New Year’s resolutions in January and I found that advertising businesses for sale

Jenny Blain - Office Manager/Broker, Whangarei 021 455 421

43

in January/ February spikes the interest as lots of brokerages seem to go quiet over that time. In my first year as a business broker I sold 3 businesses from January through to March, and in my second year I sold 6 businesses between February and June. Last year I had 4 contracts in April alone! Most of the buyers started talking to us back in January or February/ March, even if the business sold as late as June. Starting the sales process in April is as good as any other time of the year, but you want to make sure you have your accounts ready as soon as possible after the end of the financial year. The previous year’s accounts are now 12 months old and might not reflect the business in its current state. Buyers expect to see what you have done in the last 12 months. Certainly in Northland, we have many seasonal businesses. These require exceptional timing. If you have a seasonal business you have to talk to us at the end of the summer (February – March). We should look at listing the business in July/August only to expect an offer in October or November, if you’re lucky. More often than not it takes much longer to sell a seasonal business. Talking to a broker in October and expecting to sell your business before summer isn’t realistic. It takes a month from signing an offer to finalise Due Diligence and settlement (at least!). Hopefully now you can make a good judgement call on your timing. Our priority is to have you educated on the sale process before you sell. This makes the sale of your business much easier. The people that engage a business broker early on in the process will tell you that the process was not as hard as they would have thought. It is often when people rush into selling a business that problems arise lateron in the process.

Literacy Whangarei 2 Workplace learning assistance

L

iteracy Aotearoa is a national organisation of adult literacy providers, with over 40 local groups providing literacy, numeracy and learning support services for adults and their families. Workplace literacy is a particular focus of provision as it is so critical to individuals, families and the economic and social well-being of the nation.

Literacy Whangarei Manager: Marion Kerepeti | Phone: 09 4382511

Business owners: Productivity, innovation, customer service and competition all mean your employees need the literacy and numeracy skills to lift your business and deal with new work practices and technologies. Enhancing the literacy and numeracy skills of employees impacts on many factors in the workplace: • Safer workplace • Fewer returned products • Improved quality processes • Better at solving problems • Improved teamwork • Better qualifications We work either 1/1 with employees to develop their skills in required literacy and numeracy tasks in their individual workplace, or with groups of workers with common needs, e.g. in the same workplace or same industry. We have contracts with a range of Industry Training Organisations to assist apprentices and other workers with the learning required for their trade papers and assessments. Northland’s newest marine services at Marsden Cove Marina

47

T

he marina at Marsden Cove is developing strongly, with a new vessel haul out and hard stand facility under construction that’s expected to be operational later this year.

Manager Brent Wilson says it’s a big development that will complement the marina’s existing facilities and benefit the wider Northland boating community. “We’re located just inside the entrance to Whangarei Harbour, so boaties don’t have far to travel.”

A hydraulic marine trailer is being manufactured by Roodberg in the Netherlands, which will operate on a custom-built ramp. It’s capable of carrying vessels weighing up to 80tonnes, with a maximum length of 35 metres and 12 metres width. The hardstand facility nearby will include 1ha of heavy-duty surface area and secure fencing. Brent says, “We’re seeing strong demand as existing facilities are reaching capacity and more overseas vessels visit New Zealand. This development will create opportunities for local employment and growth bringing new jobs and income into the region. We have a great marine community in Whangarei and we all work closely together to grow the marine industry as a whole.” The marina provides boaties with all amenities typical of a world class facility. Its 230 berths range from 10.5 metres through to 40 metres, and catamarans up to 25-metres can be accommodated. Berths are available for long-term lease or short-term rental, and include access to power, water and wifi.

An adjacent commercial complex offers a café and bar, general store, hair and beauty salon, shore based vehicle re-fuelling station, electric vehicle charging station and a New Zealand Customs Office. Brent says the marina’s owner, Marsden Maritime Holdings Ltd, is keen for additional services to be provided at the hardstand, and with ample affordable land for lease, there is plenty of scope for future expansion. “We welcome enquiry from anyone wishing to either access or provide services at Marsden Cove. The area has been attracting all the right sort of attention recently, and Hopper Developments is continuing its staged residential development. The stunning landscape and gentle climate make Marsden Cove a very attractive proposition for anyone wanting to combine a relaxed lifestyle with business opportunities.”

retirement.

hen Ryan and Pippa Bourke bought the company in September 2015, the former owner had been downsizing- planning for

But downsizing was the last thing on this couple’s minds. A re-brand was first on the cards. Ryan wanted a name that symbolised what people want when they come to him for a kitchen design. “I wanted something fresh, new and that would withstand the test of time,” he says. “I wanted us to be the future of kitchen design.”

The showroom officially opened in November last year, although Ryan says it will always be a work in progress.

Next Edition fitted perfectly as it represented a fresh start for a company that had previously been downsizing.

“It’s something that will always be changing as different looks go in and out of style.”

“It also worked as Next Addition, but the play on words was way more fun,” says Ryan.

Ryan and Pippa Bourke now own two companies, Next Edition Kitchens and Creative Junction magazine. They collectively manage up to 10 staff and contractors at any one time.

The name Next Edition Kitchens was very fitting as Pippa is also a magazine editor. Within six months, Ryan had taken on two new staff members and moved the company from a rural location to its current location at 50 Kioreroa Rd. It had been a life goal of Ryan’s to run his own joinery company by the time he was 30, and he just scraped in. Ryan turned 30 shortly after the big move.

Ryan says processes and procedures are what keep him sane. “Everyone has got their role, and we are getting a reputation now for performing and delivering to schedule.” Visit www.nexteditionkitchens.com for more information.

Northpower Fibre’s UFB expansion

53

M

ay 8, 2014 was a landmark occasion for the North as the then Prime Minister John Key officially opened New Zealand’s first ultrafast broadband fibre network in Whangarei. Three years on more than 9000 people are connected to the country’s second fastest fibre network. Northpower Fibre’s average download connection speed for households and small businesses in Whangarei is an impressive 101.9Mbps. Yet the company continues to strive for better. Despite offering 1 Gbps services, Northopwer Fibre combined with Calix earlier this year to complete a world first – achieving speeds of 10Gig in a residential and business environment. This was just weeks after an announcement of an expansion of Northpower Fibre’s Whangarei UFB network. Northpower has this year secured contracts to build UFB networks in 12 Kaipara and Whangarei towns – Kaiwaka, Mangawhai Village, Mangawhai Heads, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Ruawai, Dargaville, Waipu, Ruakaka, One Tree Point, Waikaraka and Hikurangi. The four year project will cost around $30 million. Northpower Chair Nikki-Davies Colley says the expansion of Northpower’s UFB network through the Government’s UFB2 initiative is a substantial boost to the region as it will take fibre to a further 9000 premises – adding to the 20,000 UFB premises in Whangarei.

in September 2018. Dargaville East will begin to receive fibre from February 2019, followed by Mangawhai Heads South in March 2019 and Mangawhai Heads North in August 2019. The Kaiwaka UFB network build will begin in April 2020, Maungaturoto in June 2020, Waikaraka in September 2020 and Ruawai in November 2020. Work on the Paparoa network will start in January 2021 and be completed in May 2021. Josie Boyd, General Manager Network Assets, says Northpower is looking forward to continuing its partnership with Crown Fibre Holdings and embarking on this further expansion of the UFB network. “Fibre broadband is a real enabler for our community and we see building fibre networks as future-proofing investment in our business.,” says Mrs Boyd.

“It is fantastic to receive these UFB2 contracts to extend fibre throughout our electricity network because it will be of such benefit to these communities.”

When the Hikurangi UFB network build is completed in September, it will pass over 650 customers – an overdue social and economic boost for the town.

Every build must be completed within 12 months and the first connections are likely to happen one month before the completion of each network build. Hikurangi and Waipu are exceptions, with connections available before Christmas 2017.

Locals can pre-register their interest to connect by going to www.northpowerfibre.co.nz/hikurangi

The first town to benefit from UFB will be Hikurangi where the build started in April. This will be followed by Waipu in June and One Tree Point in July. Dargaville West will be underway in January 2018, Ruakaka in March 2018 and Mangawhai Village

From there they simply need to choose the fibre retail service provider who best serves their needs and sign up. For more information on coverage areas and build schedules: www.northpowerfibre.co.nz/coverage

he creation of shareholder wealth is the primary purpose of any business; sustainable profits and future proofing are crucial. Business owners are often absorbed in running the business, not stopping to reflect on the real reason for being in business; to continually build the shareholder value in the business so as to create options for the shareholders when it comes time to sell the business, merge it with another business, or use its shareholder value to support another commercial investment. Training the Public Health Workforce

T

he public health workforce is facing major challenges. An ageing population, continuing inequalities in health status, new and re-emerging global diseases and the growing dominance of chronic health issues are having an increasing impact on public health in New Zealand. Epidemics of obesity and diabetes, and environmental emergencies pose major challenges to the health services of the future. Effective intervention to prevent disease, to address the determinants of ill health and inequalities is required to improve the health of New Zealanders. The health of New Zealanders is also affected by the workforce’s preparedness for serious and unusual emergencies and events. The public health workforce in health organisations and in related agencies across our communities must grow and upskill to meet these challenges. There are growing opportunities to use public health and population health approaches to meet these challenges. District Health Boards (DHBs) are increasing their investment in public health action. Many parts of the health and other sectors now see public health as their business, in particular primary care and local authorities. Public health expertise is sought by agencies outside the health sector; for example in the housing, education and sustainable environments sectors. The general consensus across the entire health sector is that the pace of workforce change must quicken – now. The challenge is the same for the public health workforce, who must equip themselves to adapt to changing models of

care, changing community and societal structures, changing population demographics and changing public health issues. Ringa Atawhai Matauranga was established specifically to meet these challenges by supporting improved outcomes for students, employers, and communities in the health related sector and on improving the responsiveness of training to their needs. Some issues of concern include: • Eighty-three percent of employees in public health positions have some tertiary qualifications, but only a low percentage, have specific qualifications in public health. • There is no united public health voice to influence curriculum development in education and training. • The public health workforce needs increased skills and expertise to lead health sector and community action to promote and improve health and reduce inequalities. • There are significant inequities in the availability of, and access to, training. • There is little collaboration between training providers, or between the public health sector and tertiary education providers. • A large proportion of the provider workforce is unregulated, with little or no professional infrastructure, standards or career pathways.

We are registered and accredited by the NZQA to provide community health workers' training. Please contact us if you wish to pursue a career in a health related field Phone: 09 430 3305 pte@ringaatawhai.org.nz 10a Porowhini Avenue, Whangarei

Northland’s First Class Civil Contractors – celebrating 45 years!

67

T

his year Alan and Annie Johnston and their team will celebrate a major milestone -45 years of first class contracting in Northland and 25 years since they (Alan and Annie) bought the business in 1992 from Annie’s parents Peter and Joan Robinson who started Robinson Asphalts back in 1972. The business has grown and diversified significantly over the years and now employs over 40 staff including 3 licenced building practitioners. Although the name Robinson Asphalts is well known and highly regarded in Northland, Annie says one of the biggest misconceptions is that they only do Asphalt – “We offer the full package of civil contracting services, in fact we do as much concrete as we do Asphalt. We’ve often considered changing our name, to capture the broader scope of works we offer, but it always comes back to the excellent reputation we have built over 45 years that is synonymous with the name!” Robinson Asphalts specialise in providing a one-stop-shop for first class civil contracting services – • Siteworks • Kerbing • Earthworks • Concrete work • Hardfill • Asphalt • Drainage • Timber work • Demolition • Decks and steps • Carparks • Driveways • Retaining walls • Tennis courts • Fencing • Track Formation • Paving • Landscaping • Kerbing We don’t just do large commercial jobs – we offer the full range of residential contracting from small projects to major siteworks, driveways, retaining walls, timber work and tennis courts – we can take care of it all from start to finish and we make the experience as hassle free as possible. No need to deal with multiple contractors.

Annie & AJ with the projects/pricing team – Tom Taylor, Peter Evans, Mark Smith and Trevor Voss. “It’s extremely busy out there at the moment with lots of exciting projects happening around the district” says Alan – “There’s a really positive buzz around our city, and more people moving into the region which is great for everyone.” No matter how busy, Robinson Asphalts mission is always to produce top quality, sustainable product and service, and happy clients. Just some of Robinson Asphalts recent key projects are; - The Falls Estate Retirement Village – civil works for Argon construction - Bay of Islands Hospital civil works for Northland District Health Board - S H 1 Kensington Ave/Manse Street improvements – keystone walls, stone strong walls, fencing and footpaths for Fulton Hogan - Rivervale Subdivision in Riverside Whangarei – all subdivisional works, including concrete roading - Te Mara Estate, Maungatapere – all subdivisional works including concrete roading

Alan and Annie speak very highly of their outstanding team “Our team are proud of their work in Northland – quality and client satisfaction are hugely important to us – it’s our number one focus and all the staff understand that. We’re a local Company employing local people - we believe in building strong relationships and sharing in the success of every project.”

rug and alcohol use in the workplace is a problem throughout New Zealand and Northland is no exception.

The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) CEO Kirk Hardy says, “There is a growing awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol use in the workplace and management are taking steps to address it which is a positive step forward”. This includes implementing an effective drug and alcohol policy and training management to recognise drug use, teamed with pre employment and random onsite drug testing. Key behavioural indicators in employees that could point to drug use include patterns of lateness for work, an increase in sick days, lethargic poor work performance and displaying irritable and irrational behaviour. Sadly, in some instances management turn a blind eye. This not only poses a potential risk in the workplace to the employee but also other staff and even customers. TDDA offers a range of services to address the use of drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace and strives to work together with clients to create drug-free environments. TDDA’s mobile drug testing vehicles conduct drug and alcohol testing - including synthetic drugs - utilising oral fluid (saliva), urine and hair testing. This is complemented with training for management around detecting possible drug use in employees and how to deal with these oftenvolatile situations.

75

Kirk says, “Saving lives is part of our company’s mantra – our ultimate customer is the ‘girl on the bike’. An analogy we stand by whenever we do policy or education training, or testing within any industry. Ultimately our work helping to ensure workplaces are drug and alcohol free to prevent accidents, extends beyond the confines of the business walls into the community and beyond, ultimately ‘protecting the girl on the bike’ riding along in every suburb in New Zealand. As a community we need to stand together to address this at every possible level, whether it’s educating our kids, together with resources to help people who are struggling with drug addiction. Workplace drug testing not only provides a safe working environment but also provides early identification giving people a chance to address their usage giving them a better chance of giving up the drugs.” TDDA is New Zealand’s leading on-site drug testing agency. It has been operating for 12 years and now has 45 branches throughout Australia and New Zealand with specialist on-site testing vehicles and collecting and screening staff providing a truly international service. Business Mentors New Zealand can help in the following ways: • Independent, impartial suggestions. • Peace of mind, increased confidence, a fresh perspective, inspiration or simply a sounding board to bounce ideas off for growing your business. • Assistance to implement improvements, support which is not often available after attending a business course or workshop. • An empathetic person to listen to the challenges and difficulties you face - sometimes this alone is all that’s needed to identify strategies and opportunities for growth. • Mentoring can challenge you to go further, set new goals and achieve better results. • Successful mentoring depends on the commitment you make to the mentoring relationship! We have some great Mentors with fantastic knowledge of Northland business. Contact us to find out more admin@ northchamber.co.nz

Goodbye Server, hello as-a-service

81

Why it’s time to ditch your infrastructure and move to the cloud

I

f your business has costly infrastructure taking up space in a server room, here’s the good news: you’re about to acquire some more office space. With more New Zealand businesses embracing anything as-aservice (XaaS), IT is rapidly changing shape. Software, Infrastructure, platform and telecommunications are all delivered in a single package. As-a-service IT focuses on services rather than servers and infrastructure, so businesses can get the connectivity and communications they need – without having to maintain them on-site. Times are changing Investments in business technology used to mean purchasing on premise software that required installation, ongoing support, extra parts, maintenance and upgrades. It was costly, clunky and often problematic. But times are changing. Thanks to cloud based working and a shift to mobile devices, the as-a-service model is playing a key part in changing the way the New Zealand businesses are working. As-a-service and your business More than just a change in how software is paid for, as-a-service marks a radical shift in the way services are delivered, managed and used. It’s about buying business outcomes, not software, says Vodafone Enterprise Director Ken Tunnicliffe. “Consider the advantage of predictable expenses when you’re no longer buying, building and maintaining your IT infrastructures. Your cloud-based products simply evolve and continue to add value over time, rather than becoming outdated.” Goodbye admin, hello bigger picture The as-a-service model can deliver real benefits for your IT team. It streamlines the deployment of new software and reduces customer acquisition costs. An as-a-service approach allows a company to scale as much they need without investing in additional infrastructure or employing more staff. And subscription-based pricing means a predictable and consistent budget. IT people should welcome the opportunities it presents. It means less time spent on humdrum administrative tasks and more time exploring bigger picture possibilities.

4 ways as-a-service can help your business 1. Improve your bottom line The as-a-service model virtually eliminates the upfront costs of hardware and installation. And your business saves money on upgrades, as they’re simply downloaded or happen automatically. 2. Gain more work hours As-a-service applications often only require a reliable internet connection and a login, so there’s no timeconsuming installation process. Plus with the maintenance responsibilities shifted to the vendor, your IT team is free to focus on the tools required to build the business. 3. Increase business agility The as-a-service model delivers this flexibility because you pay-as-you- go. Products and services are looked after by Vodafone, so changing your plan is quick and easy. And because it’s web-based, subscribers can use applications anywhere with internet access. 4. Connect your employees Improve collaboration and cross-border team working with a unified communications solution that enables your team to work together from almost anywhere without worrying about bill shock or security breaches.

OU Travel Whangarei started 70 years ago as Roseman & Warren Travel, in July 1947, and became the first booking office for Air NZ. Although the company name remains Roseman & Warren Travel, our trading name from the 80’s until recently was United Travel. We rebranded a year ago as YOU Travel and celebrated our 1st birthday in April. A few things have changed in travel over the years. No longer do we send telex messages into the ether and await a telegram for confirmation, and no longer is travel the domain of the rich. These days we are all rich in travel in ways our predecessors wouldn’t even have dreamed about. The way we transact travel has changed, and so have the products we offer. From ticketing office to group and cruise specialists, we have come a long way in 70 years, with escorted tours and cruises a particular passion of ours. It is our great joy to dream the dream for you, to imagine and engineer great journeys to excite and inspire, and to surprise you with ideas you hadn’t yet imagined. Leading them as well, is an incredible privilege. Sharing the journey, striving for perfection, building friendships, returning again. Of course you may wish to travel alone or with family or friends. We can help you with that too. Bring your ideas or ask us for ours. Travel has changed. There’s a whole world out there waiting for you. Let us show you around.
