A word from the CEO

NZ CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE NORTHLAND

Tony Collins – CEO Chambers of Commerce Northland

P

art of what makes Northland great is the unique character that their locally owned businesses provide. These businesses build and sustain strong communities; provide a network of economic and social relations and contribute strongly to local causes. With the relationship these businesses have with their communities they are more likely to spend more money locally and this multiplier effect benefits the local economy. Welcome to this 2nd annual Business 2 Business publication. NZ Chambers of Commerce Northland is proud to be involved in this publication and we thank our member businesses for their support. This publication provides the opportunity our members to help differentiate their businesses from others in a crowded market and reinforce the role they play in Northland’s business community. The New Zealand Chambers of Commerce is a body of some thirty Chambers throughout New Zealand, supporting over 12,000 members and representing over 40 million businesses. Each Chambers’ role is to support and inspire business vitality and success. As not-for-profit business membership associations, the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce promote, support and encourage sustainable, profitable business growth. We are strongly focussed on creating better businesses in Northland through helping businesses improve their capability and advocating for an environment in which

doing business is easy. Businesses are only as successful as their owners and managers. They operate in a dynamic, changing environment that requires the business leader to constantly and deliberately build on their management capabilities. As well as tradition and experience, the Chambers offer up-to-date and informed thinking on topics as wide ranging as transport and infrastructure, employment, local and central government initiatives, policy change and contemporary business issues; advocacy and lobbying on behalf of their business communities; and support for a wide range of business tools, resources and advisory services to help business succeed. - See more at: http:// www.northchamber.co.nz It is the individual business owner who has made the investment, taken the risk and has an expectation of some reward. The attractive nature of the owner’s aspiration and their future desire is what energises and motivates them to take action. It gives a reference point against which they can focus, adopt innovative ideas and develop a level of resilience that is so important. This is what ultimately differentiates one business from another and provides them with the best opportunity to grow their business and succeed in their endeavours. Through business our members apply their talents to achieve their own aspirations and to provide a service for others. We need to celebrate and respect these people, and foster a better understanding of the contribution business makes to the wider community, then this will go a long way to inspiring others to pursue their business aspirations. There is a wide range of businesses, industries and opportunities here, when we support people and businesses they reach their full potential and that makes for a brighter future. The staff realise that farmers in the dairy industry are having a hard time at present. These farmers will need to take this time to look at their operation and make decisions. Time to do that budgeting everyone keeps putting off and time to get to grips with tools to help through the difficult times. It’s OK to reach out for professional help. Debbie has a farming background with dry stock. She understands the stresses and challenges of farm life. Where

Catering for Northland - and beyond! -Absolute Caterers

T

he thought of catering for 250 guests at a remote location with no power and no facilities would be enough to turn most of us prematurely grey – but not for Absolute Caterers. For this experienced team, the more challenging the request, the more interesting their job—and boy, do they love their job! From his early beginnings as an uncelebrated ‘dishie’ in a local Whangarei restaurant; Dwight has worked and studied his way to where he is now: owner of the sole catering company for the Northland Events Centre, with his business Absolute Caterers. With his dedicated team of exceptional wait staff and internationally experienced chefs, including Shannon Hauraki General Manager/Executive Chef and George Seymour Head Chef, Absolute Caterers offer much more than a sausage-roll-andcheerios affair…..” – in fact, once you’ve read their menus (which change frequently) you may never look at catering quite the same again. An example? Their current menu features such mouthwatering morsels as ‘Twice-cooked Pork Belly with Glass Crackling, served with apple and vanilla marmalade with cauliflower puree’, alongside classics such as the ‘Roasted Angus Sirloin Steak, served on a potato and kumara dauphinoise with Shiraz jus’ – but for those of us who enjoy a walk on the wild side, there’s the ‘Pan Seared Red Snapper served on a grilled vegetable tian with lavender and carrot puree’ to tempt our taste buds. And

that’s not even mentioning the desert selections: ‘Tiramisu Parfait served with homemade lemon and pistachio biscotti’, ‘Black Forest Gateaux served with freshly whipped blackberry cream’ or perhaps a ‘Trio of Sorbet served in homemade tuille cylinders’ to conclude your evening . . . These menu selections would not be out of place in many top restaurants. For Dwight and his team, the secret to their success lies in paying very close attention to customer requirements. ‘We don’t aim to meet requirements,’ explains Dwight, ‘we aim to exceed expectations. That is what I have based my business reputation on: we listen, we understand, and we always try to over-deliver.’ For a company with such unwavering high standards; Absolute Caterers have certainly not lost their down-to earth approach when it comes to working with their customers. ‘We are always focused on providing the ultimate in customer service; whether it be a small family gathering, or a national gathering of business people – from weddings to birthdays, family events to sporting and corporate engagements; we are always able to tailor our menus and services to our customers unique requirements. At the end of the day, we want every function we cater for to be as memorable as it can possibly be – and that means the food and the wait service has to be of a very high standard. Our motto is ‘expect the best’ and that is what we strive to achieve every time.’

Mouth-watering delicacies for all occasions; from weddings to corporate functions, small luncheons to large celebrations – we design the perfect menu to complement your event. Experience the culinary expertise, the creative flair and the dedication to excellence that is the hallmark of Absolute Caterers; your event catering specialists. We design our menus to ensure you are always impressed: simply describe your occasion and we will provide event catering that will exceed your expectations. Absolute Caterers – Expect the best! The Changing Face of Corporate Security

T

he face of corporate security is changing fast, with advances in technology allowing for improved monitoring, more real-time data capture and better security control than ever before. Whangarei-based security firm ARC Security has always focused on being one step ahead, and is working with a growing number of corporates and businesses needing a complete security system to manage everything from CCTV cameras and alarms through to monitoring and access control for staff and customers. Andrew and Rachel Chuter set up ARC Security in Kamo 11 years ago, and have gone from strength to strength, building on Andrew’s extensive international experience in the security industry and his indepth knowledge of a wide range of security systems. “When I first arrived in Northland, I had the option to either set up my own company, or join an existing firm. I was keen to play a lead role in introducing new security technology to Northland homes and businesses, so decided to go out on my own, and it was the best decision I could have made - I certainly haven’t looked back,” says Andrew. In fact, ARC Security now has the largest team of fully licensed and trained security technicians in the region, who have installed an extensive number of systems for large commercial and industrial sites through to schools and residential properties. We take a solutions-based approach, starting with understanding the issues our clients are facing,” says Andrew. “If it’s a medium-sized business, they may be wanting

NZ CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE NORTHLAND

to monitor employee and visitor movements, protect assets and minimise theft, and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety requirements. “Every company is unique, so we assess the company as a whole and then develop a fully integrated security system that will give the company’s owners or directors genuine peace of mind. Full integration means all aspects of the security system work together, and the company has full control over where, how and by whom the system is accessed.” Andrew says clients also enjoy the positive impact their system has on the bottom line. “Our systems minimise stock loss and asset damage, reduce risks around confidential information and better protect both staff and customers, which all help improve the company’s overall performance.” Andrew says new technology means there is a solution for every security concern. “We are giving companies more control than ever before, creating extra ‘eyes and ears’ that provide crucial information to improve management of the entire company.” Residential homes are also a key focus for ARC Security, with exciting technology developments in the residential market as well. “We can now offer fully wireless systems, which are great for rental properties, as well as a full range of options for alarm monitoring, pet friendly sensors, remote control access, smoke sensors, panic buttons… you name it, we can do it.”

When you need the best in business, retail or home security think ARC Security Solutions. ARC’s commercial clients include Northland District Health Board, Northport, Northpower, Top Energy, Whangarei Pak’n’Save and Toll Stadium, with ARC developing a custom-designed solution to meet each organisation’s unique security needs

usiness is booming, new doors are opening and more people are being hired in the Whangarei, Northland branch thanks to a clever plan and lots of hard work. Regional Manager Warwick Taylor says winning new business in Dargaville, Kaikohe, Kaitaia and contracts in Whangarei for the Ministry of Social Development, Housing Corporation and the District Health Board has done wonders for raising Armourguard’s profile in Northland. “We’ve had really good feedback from those customers and the public about our people’s professionalism. “We never used to even be able to get our foot in the door at some of these places, and now they are offering us more and more work.” Warwick says Armourguard’s reputation in Northland has been helped by offering sponsored guarding services at community events. The latest was for Relay for Life at their 10th anniversary, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back! Whakanui, Maumaharatia, Tu Atu!”. “Ours is a small community where everyone knows everyone. Volunteering at events has raised our profile and shown that Armourguard cares about our local communities and is willing to give something back.” The Northland branch may be on the up and up but Warwick says this is just the beginning. “My goal is for Armourguard to become Northland’s number one security company. Not only do I want us to

have the principal share of the security market, but I want Armourguard to be the first security company that comes to people’s minds. “Being good ambassadors and delivering excellence in customer service is second nature to all our frontline staff. Our focus is to provide more than a ‘routine monitoring service’ to our clients, as we go the extra distance to incorporate additional training to be a ‘support resource’ for our clients to call upon. “There was a big gap between this goal and where we were 4 years ago, but I am confident that continued hard work, great customer service and commitment to our local communities will get us there in the end,” he says.

Belltech - a Northland Newcomer

H

ave you ever been at an event where the sound is terrible, the lighting looks awkward and the projection screen is crooked? Belltech hasn’t. Belltech is Whangarei’s newest event company and fast becoming the go-to guys for all of your technical requirements. They specialise in making an event sound, look and feel the best it can be. Director Tim Bell cut his teeth as a freelance lighting technician for performing arts before moving to Australia and became preferred technician in one of South-East Queensland’s biggest staging companies. “When I moved back to Whangarei, I realised there wasn’t much competition in this area. After working for the other major event companies I saw things that I could do differently, if not better.” So Belltech was born, and has been going steadily since 2013. They have been regularly involved in community events and are proud sponsors of Women’s Refuge. Tim is well known in the live music scene and consistently impresses both the performers and the patrons with the quality of sound and lighting provided. “Technicians aren’t used to being appreciated by the crowd, so it’s always a great feeling to know you’ve made someone sound their best and showcased that to the audience.” Tim wanted a company that catered to everyone from all corners of the community from schools and organisations to theatre companies and businesses, big and small. “All clients deserve 100% of your attention. Your projects are just as important to me as they are to you.” Belltech can assist you with Lighting, Sound, Staging

and Audio/Visual support for everything from a small announcement to a conference, weddings to a concert. They offer the most competitive pricing from Auckland to Northland and are happy to give advice for any event.

Looking to invest?

NZ CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE NORTHLAND

Important questions to ask your advisor 1. How will my adviser be paid and are there any conflicts of interest? Unlike Bradley Nuttall Ltd some advisers and brokers are paid by the investments they recommend, these commissions and brokerage can create a natural conflict of interest which in turn compromises the adviser’s impartiality. Is the adviser loyal to you, or to the product, product provider or employer that is their source of income?

2. What fees will I be paying? Disclosure of fees is often buried in the fine print, inadequately explained, and not even understood by most investors. All-in-fees of 3% are too common and far too high. If investors can lower their fees by even half a percent, they will dramatically increase their returns 3. What returns have your portfolio’s delivered? It is true that past performance is no guide to the future; however it is advisable to ask how portfolios have performed in the past. If your adviser has a proven Investment philosophy supported by academic research they should be more than happy to disclose this information.

We are continually building our knowledge and skill base to provide our customers with the best solutions for their needs. More recently, we have expanded into Solar Energy installations and are very excited about the new addition to the business. It’s not just our excellent products that have helped make a name for ourselves over the years - it’s our

attention to detail. We will never sell a product to a customer without knowing the full picture. We take care in completing an onsite visit, including an extensive checklist of factors that we use to make sure that the best solution is found. With this knowledge you can trust that we’re providing you with the best solution for your situation. We understand that a heating/cooling system is an important investment and we want you to make an informed decision. We aim to make this process as painless as possible, so we have a dedicated salesperson, and a large heatpump showroom in Whangarei to exhibit our products to remove some of the guesswork. We have also recently added working solar panels to our showroom to give customers the opportunity to see first hand how they work to harness usable energy. Day to Day we deal with all aspects of domestic heatpump and airconditioning needs, underfloor heating, milk vat refrigeration, marine & commercial refrigeration, ventilation and solar energy systems so are equipped to offer expert advise, customised designs and qualified engineers for any work that comes our way. From a company that started from the ground up, nearly 20 years on we stand strongly behind our brand and what we have achieved in Northland. We’re looking forward to the next 20 years and being able to continue to bring heating/cooling expertise and local knowledge to the people of Northland.

he Continental Motel is a new venture for locals Monica Nance, an ex-teacher, and husband Tim Hempleman, a retired principal. With a vision to ‘delight their guests with value and service’, Monica has set to creating an appealing and comfortable environment for their visitors. The motel has 18 units, comprising studio, one bedroom and two bedrooms, and easily caters for singles, couples, corporate reps, families and large groups like sports groups. The whole complex has been recently refurbished and the units are spacious, fresh and modern, each with full kitchen facilities. The Continental also has a purpose built accessibility unit with easy wheel chair access and appropriate facilities for a comfortable stay. The heated salt pool (summer) and spa are popular with families, and a real hit for those escaping Auckland for the weekend. The Continental’s location, halfway between Regent and Kensington, allows straightforward access to the city centre, sports grounds, restaurants and medical centres. It is easy to find - just look for the flags! Apart from offering a delightful place to stay, Monica and Tim’s goal is to offer exceptional service to their guests, meeting their needs and making their stay as pleasant as possible. Both delight in meeting new people, and care that their stay is enjoyable. They have travelled extensively themselves, hosting many international visitors in their home. They believe they have a good appreciation of how to make their guests feel welcome. A fundamental part of that is selling Whangarei. No longer is this a place

that people pass by on their way to the Bay of Islands. Whangarei is a tourist destination in itself for both national and international guests. BUSINESS 2 BUSINESS APRIL 2016

Creative Northland

T

he Creative economy is one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy. It is highly transformative in terms of income generation, job creation and export earnings and generates non-monetary value that contributes significantly to achieving people. Unlocking the potential of the creative economy involves promoting the overall creativity of people, affirming the distinctive identity of the places where it flourishes.. The creative sector as a driver of social development contributes to an improved quality of life, well-being of communities, individual self-esteem dialogue and cohesion.

Why do some places become destinations for creatives why others don’t? Those involved in economic development or familiar with Richard Florida’s theories would speak of the importance of creative industries having low entry barriers so that new business can easily enter and keep the sector dynamic. It is important for Northland to be a place where newcomers are accepted quickly into all sorts of social and economic activities, so we can attract greater numbers of talented and creative people. Is Northland becoming that ‘place? Are we attracting people who can influence innovation and growth? There are a new generation of people who are creating new places, finding opportunity to build support structures, be themselves and not get stuck into any one stereotype. That’s because location choices for Northlands creative class are based to a large degree on lifestyle interests and quality of life. In Northland talented people are seeking environments where they want to hear different kinds of music, try different types of food, socialize with different people, and have experiential experiences with architecture, art galleries, performance spaces, theatres, outdoor events and music venues. What do we value? At Creative Northland we value authenticity and uniqueness within our communities from historic buildings to specific cultural attributes, colourful neighbourhoods to unique local activities, transmedia platforms that transform local narrative.

25

It is our role to help local groups, local business and local councils understand how to mix urban grit alongside renovated buildings, develop open spaces where there are visible signs of creativity in the community. The creative arts brings people together building links between communities to encourage pride and a sense of belonging. Visual and performing arts, digital technologies, design and architecture, gaming and publishing, film and script all contribute to individual and collective fulfilment. Some of our Projects • ArtBeat is a free interactive arts festival for the whole Northland community where members of the public are encouraged to come along and experiment with different art genres free of charge. This is annual summer event held at Cafler Park in Whangarei. • Whangarei Sculpture Symposium is a biennial event held in summer over a 10 day period with up to 24 sculptors creating a work in either soft or hard stone and or wood based on a theme. This is a free event open to the general public, which ends with a public auction of the sculptures. This year the symposium was held at the Hihiaua Peninsula, a park commonly used by walkers, runners and family groups. The next symposium is in 2018. • Northland Youth Summit • The Northland Youth Summit is a platform for young people to develop the confidence to speak up about the issues that matter to them and their communities. It is an incubator for community development projects, where up to 50 young people, aged 12 to 24, spanning from all areas of Northland are encouraged to outline projects which are voted on to receive funding to make it happen. The 2016 Summit is to be hosted in Dargaville. What we do Our role is to help make decisions around strategies and programmes that forge new pathways for local creative economic development. We work with SMEs, art organisations and local art groups to understand funding needs, provide advice, connections and support for any arts and culture outreach progamme. We respond to cultural and community development, give advice on how to access global markets and digital connectivity.

CleanScape

Why choose CleanScape? Experienced, established and with a reputation for excellence –we guarantee you’ll be impressed! Commercial Cleaning In a commercial environment, it is essential that all processes be efficient, professional and that maximum care is taken at all times. CleanScape utilises highly effective technology to ensure all areas are cleaned comprehensively and to schedule – this not only allows our cleaners to maintain a detailed automatic log, but it also enables our clients to monitor our cleaning progress. Scan Points We wanted to offer our clients the ability to access and monitor their commercial property cleaning logs from the comfort of their home or office; and we also wanted the ability to automatically time- and date-stamp each entry. With this in mind, we implemented a system which has proven extremely popular for both our employees and our clients. The concept is simple: we create ‘scan points’ at pre-agreed areas throughout our clients’ commercial premises, and as each of these points is cleaned, the unique barcode is scanned. This information is instantly date- and time-stamped as it is recorded, and is then immediately visible to our head office and our clients (via their secure online system).

Security Here at CleanScape, we take security very seriously. Commercial cleaning requires a high level of security – and that extends past police checks. Our employees all sign non-disclosure documentation, which is specifically designed to protect our clients’ privacy. Our cleaning teams are fully trained, checked and certified to clean in commercially sensitive areas. Hazardous Areas We understand the need for extra precautions within sensitive environments, ensuring all our staff receive training appropriate to the commercial space they are working within. We have extensive cleaning experience in hazardous and sensitive environments, and are able to undertake specialised cleaning requirements as needed. Environmentally Friendly We care for our planet – all of our cleaning products are chosen with care, and we recycle all of our containers and product bottles. We minimise wastewater wherever possible, and ensure that any hazardous or toxic waste is discarded appropriately.

Celebrating Whangarei’s Heritage Engraving Systems

I

f Whangarei were to have its own walk of fame, there are a number of local businesses that would easily make the grade—there is one, however, that could make the grade AND the plaques; and that business is Engraving Systems. Having assisted Northlanders with engraving work for their businesses, clubs, organisations, teams and schools for over 40 years, Engraving Systems are still the first port of call for anything and everything that needs engraving; and while the hand on the tiller may have changed, the services continue to expand as this iconic local business grows. Rose Baker stepped into her role in 2008 after the passing of her husband Ron, making the decision to continue on with Ron’s hard work and vision rather than selling the business he had dedicated a large part of his life to. This was not an easy decision to make, as the business had been very much Ron’s domain, and the transition seemed a difficult and daunting prospect. Taking the plunge, however, has proven to be the best thing Rose has ever done —other than marrying Ron in the first place of course! It has now been almost 8 years since Rose took the helm, and her dedication and hard work has well and truly paid off. The business has gone from strength to strength; offering the latest technologies in laser engraving, sublimation, and sand blasting; while also expanding into completely new territory with self-inking stamps and even heat-press printing options for clothing—the services available are endless! Not only has Engraving Systems expanded their services; they have also extended their roots deeper into Whangarei

heritage through their creation of the heritage trail plaques along the newly completed town basin walkway loop. Another local project that has benefited from the assistance of Rose and her team is the Project Promise Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre which is now completed and operational. The entire team at Engraving Systems worked diligently to provide sublimated aluminium plaques for each of the donated bricks, which feature the donor’s name and are placed onto a unique wall inside the new building. At Engraving Services, the commitment to Whangarei runs deep—the passion and vision which began with Ron has continued on with Rose and her hardworking, experienced team—and looks set to continue on for many years to come.

ith Golden Homes, you don’t need to sacrifice style for value, or durability for design. We’ve spent years developing the Gold Standard Building System®, with our Goldseal Warranty®, so that you can have it all. At a glance there is quite a list of advantages for steel framing, apart from its ability to withstand an earthquake. Steel framing gives you the design freedom to easily create optimum architectural forms that timber simply does not allow you to do. Steel is also a third of the weight of timber, whilst also being fire resistant. Golden Homes builds exclusively with New Zealand-made ZOG® steel

framing, which has a 50 year durability statement. Your home will be so strong it can withstand seismic activity up to magnitude 9. But don’t just take their word for it though, come and experience a Golden Home for yourself. Boosting health outcomes in Northland

37

– a New Zealand success story ...

O

utgoing Manaia PHO boss Chris Farrelly ranks Northland’s Healthy Homes Te Tai Tokerau programme the most important and effective health initiative of his 25 year health career – and a standout for New Zealand. In fact, he believes insulating homes is the most permanent and positive health determinant a family can receive. Retro-fitting at-need Northland homes with insulation has dramatically improved health and educational outcomes for thousands of Northland children. And Mr Farrelly says there are also economic benefits through lower work absenteeism and the fact that money invested in the community has a three phase cycle. The programme has seen around 8000 of Northland’s most at need homes retro-fitted with insulation since 2007. Insulating a further 7000 will complete the programme but that will require around $20 million more in funding. “The project has made a huge difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable people in Northland – it has been a thrill to see it happen,” says Mr Farrelly. “The cost to insulate a home is around $3000 and in the year to the end of June, 2016, a further 900 homes will have been insulated alone. This programme is critical for a region for Northland where we are still contending with rheumatic fever which has actually shocked us into a whole lot of actions.” On average the Government (through EECA, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) provides annual funding of around 60%, Foundation North 31% and Northland funders like Top Energy and Northpower 9%. But Mr Farrelly says more local funding would be welcomed by the governance group behind the project.

“We feel it important to flag to other Northland businesses an opportunity to contribute funds to continue the programme in some form. Lots of small amounts will ensure we keep moving Northland ahead. There are 7000 more homes to insulate in Northland at which point the programme will be complete. “For many years now, through the ‘Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes’ programme, EECA has contributed $60 for every $40 raised locally. So any corporate contribution from Northland businesses actually triggers more contribution from EECA and others. “The flow on effect of this is in employment. This home insulation programme has created jobs for 20 men in the insulation teams, many of whom have come from long term unemployment. That’s another positive for the North.” So far around 4500 Far North homes have been insulated, more than 2500 Whangarei homes and over 800 Kaipara homes. “This is already a massive Northland success story (we firmly believe we have developed the premier model of the rest of NZ to adopt) and will be so much greater when house number 15,000 is insulated. It is something we can all do together because we are so much more effective as a team,” says an upbeat Mr Farrelly. “What a lot of people don’t realise are the conditions many of these families live in. There can be families of ten sleeping in one room in winter because they need to provide each other heat. A lot of houses have no beds or curtains. Insulating these homes has a positive multigenerational impact.”

Studies published in the British Medical Journal and the American Journal of Public Health on insulating homes have pointed directly to improved health outcomes including: fewer exacerbations of respiratory illness; fewer general practitioner visits; less time off work and school; improved self-rated health; reduced hospitalisations for respiratory and coronary conditions.

The Harcourts Global Rebrand

39

Why it’s so much more than a new logo

I

n January 2016, Harcourts introduced our new look to the world with the unveiling of our new brand. While on the outside, this looks like a new logo and some nice shiny documents, the reality is that this was a project about reaffirming our core business values and ensuring every part of the Harcourts experience reflects them. As with most business owners, the idea of a rebrand sounds nothing short of expensive - and don’t worry, we were the same! However after actually going through the process and understanding it on a much more in-depth level, we’ve learnt there are huge benefits to a rebrand and they go much further than just our image. Perhaps the most well known part of the rebrand was our logo redesign. It wasn’t as simple as creating a logo that we liked. It actually involved months and months of research about how we were perceived as a business combined with our brand values and research into the way people think and interpret different aspects of design. The logo was previously boxed with block lettering in a heavy font. It was sturdy, reliable but wasn’t innovative or fresh. Innovation is a big part of Harcourts globally as we are paving the way in real estate technology with Apple devices. The Harcourts Academy is one of the best real estate academies worldwide and is providing a new, exciting and fresh approach to real estate. Our old brand didn’t reflect where we’ve moved as an organisation, so this was a priority for the new logo. Our overall brand personality changed with the rebrand. A brand personality is our imagery, our language and ways that we establish a connection with people without having to show the logo. We created a style of speaking and connecting to our customers, clients and community that shows we are committed to understanding them

as individuals, and working with them to get the best results. When people hear our language, see our colours and see images that make them a certain way, they’ll start to connect these with Harcourts. This strengthens our integration in their lives and in our community. Before our ‘look’ was able to change, we had to reflect on our corporate values. And this was perhaps the most important part of it all. What are our values? What do they mean for us as a business? What do they mean for our clients, customers and community? This was an incredibly insightful process for us as business owners, and it was even better for our business. The rebrand gave us the opportunity to remind our staff and salesteam how and why we do business. It meant we could realign our business and go into this year with a renewed purpose. Everyone who is part of the Harcourts team knows how they should be conducting business and this means that In essence, who we are as a company didn’t change. We still stand for the same things, we still strive for excellence and we’re still here to help our community in every way we can - we just communicate these things a little differently and look a little different while we do it all. While it’s a long and ongoing process for us as owners of three Harcourts offices, it has already proven to be very beneficial for our operations. When your team understand the reasons for dong business, when they have a defined purpose and know exactly how they should be doing business, great things can happen. he scenic country road that weaves its way through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful landscapes en route to the old capital of Russell, holds a little known gem. Sub tropical gardens surrounded by magnificent bush rolling down to the ocean, creates a stunning setting and sea view that The Gallery & Café of Helena Bay looks over from its hill top perch. This is the perfect stop for a weary traveller heading North or a worthwhile day trip to enjoy artwork by established and emerging New Zealand artists, many of which are Northland based. Contemporary Maori and Pacific artists add to this wide-ranging collection of paintings, wood art, handmade furniture, sculpture, jewellery, glass and ceramics. A walk through the gardens to discover the sculptures and to relax from cruising the Old Russell Road, under the shade of native trees, will start the creative process and let the mind wander—before you enter the Gallery where the process soars excitedly from piece to piece, each as captivating as the next. The eclectic range is food for the soul and a worthwhile venture that need not end there but rather be taken home for perpetual enjoyment. The

Benefits of using a LINK business broker

P

eople often wonder why they should hire a business broker to sell their business, and most do not fully understand the value of a good business broker. Below are some reasons you may not have considered:

THE VALUE OF YOUR BUSINESS Time and time again we come across sellers who don’t really understand what the value of a business is. You have only one shot at selling your business and the longer it is on the market, the harder it is to command a premium price for your business. If sellers are not realistic in their pricing, their business will sit on the market and never sell. EXPOSURE Confidentiality is extremely important when selling a business. You don’t want your clients, suppliers and strategic partners to know that you are selling and you do not want your day to day operations disrupted. Having a third party handle these inquiries gives you another level of protection from exposure as often it is your competitors that will call to further enquire about your business. Only about 2% of all inquiries that brokers receive turn out to be real buyers. Brokers will ensure any potential buyer is pre-qualified and genuine before giving any identifying details about your business. NEGOTIATING Negotiating can be an emotional process for sellers to engage in directly, and these emotions can keep buyers and sellers from reaching deals. Brokers negotiate all the time, and having a third party mediate the negotiations can ensure that emotions don’t get in the way of a deal. Negotiating involves not only reaching an agreed upon price but also making sure that each deal-point is addressed and agreed upon. Jenny Blain - Office Manager/Broker, Whangarei 021 455 421

CONTRACTS Brokers will draft the Sale & Purchase Agreement and this process can save you lots of money in legal fees. Because brokers deal with the transfer of businesses all of the time, their documents are specific to a business transfer. While it is important to always have a lawyer review legal documents prior to signing, a simple review is much cheaper than paying a lawyer to draft these agreements themselves. TRANSFER DYNAMICS Selling a business is not like selling a car or a house. Businesses have many moving parts and components that need to be transferred successfully in order for a successful sale, lease negotiations, successive liability, difficult landlords, complicated licence transfers. Working through these obstacles takes experience. CLOSING THE DEAL Your ultimate goal is to sell your business for the best price possible and to have that process go smoothly. The business broker takes all the risk without any upfront fees. We only charge a success fee after the business has been sold. Having an offer on the table is often only the start of the hard work! Northpower

N

orthpower Fibre CEO Darren Mason is calling on Whangarei businesses to embrace ultra-fast fibre broadband. Of the 3000 businesses in Whangarei, 500 are connected to Northpower Fibre’s UFB network. Mr Mason says he’d like to see all businesses capitalising on the opportunities afforded by UFB. “I was at a telecommunications conference recently where some research statistics were shared and it was quite telling. Digitally enabled SMEs have revenues 20% higher than those less engaged,” says Mr Mason. “What was surprising was that only 22% of businesses use the internet for social networking, 21% for email marketing, 13% to sell products online and in the retail/ hospitality trade 30% have no web presence. Those figures are incredibly low for this day and age – especially when you consider so many cities in New Zealand have access to world-class UFB fibre networks. Mr Mason says everyone he has spoken to who is on the Northpower Fibre network say UFB fibre has saved them time and money. “Based on that, why wouldn’t you connect to UFB. If I was a business owner I’d far prefer making more money

and having more time for leisure activities at the end of the week. Mr Mason says at 27%, uptake on the Northpower Fibre UFB network is the highest of any local fibre companies in New Zealand and there are a number of business and residential areas in Whangarei where uptake has reached 50%. “People in Whangarei have certainly embraced the benefits of fibre and we appreciate that level of support. In February we topped our record monthly connection figure of 300 and we had an impressive March. We have more than 6000 people out of a possible 20,000 connected to Northpower Fibre and are likely to top 9000 by December 2016,” says Mr Mason.

Northern Districts Security

We are serious about security

“W

e Love It Here!” Our slogan is “Serious About Security” and we mean it. From the smallest security requirement to the largest, we treat everything we do as serious. Our clients put their trust in us to look after their businesses, homes assets or whatever is important or valuable to them while they are away. We strongly suggest that you have a look at your security or give us a call and we will provide a free of charge Security Assessment of your business and tailor make it to meet with your requirements all together in one simple package. It is unfortunate that crime is still on the rise but let’s make it harder for criminals. There is a bigger picture to look at than just to rely on your insurance. For example let’s say you have a retail or engineering store and you get broken into. The chances are that they would get away with something valuable or a key piece of equipment that you need to run your business. Yes sure if you have the right insurances you will be protected, but for that day how much down time did you have or loss of income and customers? Then just when you think it is all back to normal, your insurance company writes to you and informs you that your premiums will be going up, a triple whammy! You cannot rely on just your insurance alone. You need to have the necessary security measures in place to protect

your home or business to give you complete peace of mind. An added bonus is that most insurance companies will offer you a discount if you have the correct security in place. Alarms and cameras are great, but they will only capture an image or sound an alarm. If you have a business you should strongly consider having security patrols to give you the ultimate security. Nothing beats having a security officer on site, fully uniformed and visible - on looking opportunists or criminals will soon be deterred. A mobile patrol security officer will also check that all is secure and locked when patrolling your site or business. Northern Districts Security is Northland’s leading security company with over 30 staff and a client base well into the thousands. We have been here since 1989 and are proud to be Northland owned and operated. We support local businesses and all profits remain in Northland. We offer a wide range of services for all your security requirements, why deal with 5 different providers when you can deal with one? We offer Mobile Security Patrols, Cash in Transit/Banking, Static Guards,Document Destruction, Alarm Responses, Staff escorts and more. raeme Craw was an extraordinary collector who had a fascination with the Industrial Revolution, an era of world-changing global developments in engineering. For over 60 years, Graeme gathered the items which are the heart of the museum today. Experienced tour guides bring to life the stories behind the changes from horse- and man-power to mechanisation. As the tour progresses through the four large sheds, every visitor finds something to trigger a memory. It may be of the first family car, a truck or tractor they used to drive or a utensil from Grandma’s kitchen. There is something for everyone in this unique collection. The museum showcases all sorts of vehicles, including over 50 Packard cars ranging from the 1919 Opera Coupe to the 1958 Packard Hawk. One shed houses an intriguing selection of other makes of car, some of which are very rare. The ‘Big Boys’ shed is a maze of discovery, with farm machinery, trucks, military vehicles and much more. Business OK? Could be better? What is your business worth?

T

he creation of shareholder wealth is the primary purpose of any business; sustainable profits and future proofing are crucial. Business owners are often absorbed in running the business, not stopping to reflect on the real reason for being in business; to continually build the shareholder value in the business so as to create options for the shareholders when it comes time to sell the business, merge it with another business, or use its shareholder value to support another commercial investment. Bruce Young and Associates specialises in providing sound experienced based Business Advice to enable owners to plan for an increase in shareholder wealth in an enterprise. Analysing the profit drivers, existing and potential revenue streams, and assessing the growth and development capabilities of the resources and the people in the business, will enable a profit improvement or rationalisation plan to be agreed for the business to implement. Working with business owners, often in conjunction with existing in-house or external accountants, Bruce Young and Associates develops programmes of actions which will increase shareholder wealth, agreeing realistic milestones for business owners to drive the implementation of the agreed programme forward and measure progress. Business owners are usually surprised how quickly we can understand their businesses, and inspire them take their businesses to the next level. A

t Schnappa Rock we use locally sourced fresh fish that is line caught and selected in accordance with the good fish guide. We have also started our own garden that supplies most of our salad greens, micro herbs and seasonal vegetables. The garden is out in the good soil towards Poroti - a fair distance from Schnappa Rock and The Bank St Social but that makes it easier to us to keep it spray free. Our crew love the opportunity to get out in the garden and help grow the food we serve. It’s an initiative we want to grow - no pun intended - over the next couple of years and we reckon it is the way forward for the restaurant. The cost benefits aren’t huge but the flavour profile and the confidence we get from knowing where our food comes from is huge and people notice. We are also working hard on our out-catering, over the

last few years our reputation for quality catering has been enhanced, to the extent that we now have a dedicated catering crew and all the equipment to do jobs up to 350 people. It’s hard work but really rewarding to tailor-make people’s weddings, staff outings, conferences etc. Meanwhile the restaurant on the marina at Tutukaka has had a great year, the summer has been a big one and we have definitely noticed tourist numbers are on the rise and people are feeling positive right across the board. Its a good time to be in business!

At Schnappa Rock Restaurant and Bar we pride ourselves in using local produce to provide diners with a “Pacific” orientated eating experience in a relaxed atmosphere.

Robust drug & alcohol policy key factor in new Health & Safety at Work Act

N

ew Health & Safety legislation is scheduled to take effect on 4 April 2016 (Health & Safety at Work Act – HSWA). The new Act will significantly alter New Zealand’s health and safety system. For Directors or those in a governance role, the implications are significant. There will be a due diligence duty to proactively manage health and safety. Individual officers are personally liable and are not able to delegate responsibility. For Directors, it makes sense to proactively manage drug and alcohol risk, before the new legislation takes effect. Workplace drug and alcohol testing - pre-employment, random, reasonable cause and post-incident - is key to ensuring a safe workplace and is proven to be an effective tool to prevent accidents within the workplace, but a Drug & Alcohol policy must be in place before testing goes ahead. The benefits of introducing a testing regime are many, including reduced accidents and near misses, reduced absenteeism, increased productivity and reduced disciplinary actions. The new HSWA brings with it added responsibility to Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking, referred to as a PCBU. This recognises that not every person on a working site who is responsible for health & safety is necessarily an ‘employer’. Under the Act all PCBU’s must maintain a safe working environment, ensure the safe use, handling and storage of plant, structure and substances and provide information, supervision and training to help protect the health and safety of workers. They must also ensure the health and safety of anyone else that comes to the workplace. Workers themselves must also take reasonable care to ensure that their own acts or omissions do not adversely affect the safety of themselves or others. The new HSWA brings with it harsher penalties, for example a PCBU who is reckless in respect of their duties under the HSWA can liable to a fine of up to $500,000 and even a term of imprisonment. If an unsafe working practice results in a death in the workplace the fines are much higher, up to $3 million for a company. Officers of PCBU’s who are found guilty of reckless conduct causing death or serious injury (ie being aware of a significant risk and failing to take steps to eliminate it) can face up to 5 years imprisonment. (An officer is defined within the Act as those who ‘exercise significant influence over the management of the business or undertaking’).

Drugs in the workplace are a recognised hazard and as such only a robust and approved drug testing programme, utilising fair and proper procedures and conducted in accordance with best commercial practice, will help create a safe workplace. The testing provider must hold ISO 15189-2012 accreditation to be able to conduct on-site screening and prevent any allegations of discrimination, the tester should also be an independent service provider to be able to withstand legal scrutiny. TDDA believe that having a fair and effective Drug and Alcohol Policy in the workplace is at the core of creating a quality drug-testing regime. This is the start of creating a drug-free environment. Further to this, TDDA also believe training and education is the key to effective implementation of all drug and alcohol policies. It’s essential your workforce understands drug and alcohol testing processes. Testing for drugs and alcohol is another component to managing the risks that drugs and alcohol pose in the workplace. Saving lives is something that is part of TDDA’s company mantra – the ultimate customer being the ‘girl on the bike’. An analogy TDDA stands by whenever policy or education training, or testing is undertaken within any industry. Ultimately TDDA’s work helping to ensure workplaces are drug and alcohol free to prevent accidents extends beyond the confines of business walls into the community and beyond, and consequently ‘protecting the girl on the bike’ as she rides through every suburb in New Zealand. TDDA’s existing clients, in their diverse industries, take drug testing very seriously and know that it plays an important part in their business operation. But there are others who run the inherent risk of either doing nothing at all, or being so off track that it gives a false sense of security and promotes an unhealthy environment. With the new HSWA all businesses, Directors and employers need to be confident they are managing all risks appropriately. The Drug Detection Agency (TDDA) is the market leader in drug testing in Australasia, with solutions for all workplace drug policy, education and testing needs. Fully compliant to AS/NZS 4308:2008 – IANZ accredited for on-site urine drug screening, ISO15189:2012 accreditation for workplace drug testing (see NATA and IANZ websites for further detail). National coverage with 18 offices and over 40 purpose built vehicles offering mobile testing. www.tdda.com

Keeping up with Northland’s housing trends

77

Local knowledge with national support

T

he TRENZ Homes team believe it is crucial to not only stay on top of the latest market trends, but to also ensure they rise to the challenge. With an increased demand on the region’s alreadystretched housing stock, business is booming and from the Far North to Kaipara, the TRENZ team are busy delivering everything from baches to executive homes. It is this variety that gives both the local licensees and Whangarei-based national office, the knowledge and market insight that ensures customers get the exact home they are looking for. As new trends emerge, home plans are changed to meet this demand, says Kaipara Licensee Nicky Scrymgeour. Among the regular requests include the addition of a scullery adjacent to the home’s kitchen as well as extra accommodation for visiting family. “Most people want to do their own thing – either altering one of our plans or coming to us with a complete plan of their own. However what we are seeing is that the majority of plans are being altered to include a scullery. “I have had three people recently take out their ensuite but add in a scullery. It used to always be that people wanted to add an ensuite to the main bedroom, but now people are saying they don’t need it, preferring to use that space for something else,” she says. Accommodating the extended family when they come to stay is also becoming important, says Nicky. “As we see more families moving north from Auckland, we are also seeing the need to consider how they will accommodate their extended family. Whether that’s an additional wing with rooms separate from the rest of the house or an entirely separate dwelling like a cottage or sleep out . . . that request for additional space is becoming really common.” Whangarei licensee Joe Love says there is a clear trend towards lifestyle and rural properties as well as some

dissatisfaction with the current housing stock by second home buyers or those who are looking for something a bit bigger. “People are finding that they get more value from building a new home than buying something existing. We have many second home buyers looking at semi-rural properties with the idea to build something bigger than what they can find on the market,” says Joe. “Land is becoming scarce so when people secure their dream piece of dirt, they want to build something more substantial on it, and also something that reflects them.” TRENZ Homes custom built houses are constructed from New Zealand made materials and tailored to meet each customer’s specifications and budget, from the classic Kiwi bach to a modern executive home. Local licensees are supported by the company’s national office in Whangarei, where a team of nine ensure each customer’s experience is faultless and their home built to their unique specifications and budget. IT Technology Solutions moved to their new Kamo location in November 2015 having renovated the space to become fit for their purpose. Their decision to relocate from downtown Whangarei was a good one. From small beginnings, owner Paul Batchelder worked from his garage as a one man band. He later leased a building in town, and over the last 14 years has grown his experienced team and never looked back. It all stemmed from growing up on a dairy farm. Their cow shed was hooked up to a IBM compatible computer in the late 1980s. Paul was fascinated by the new technology, he soon found that he had a natural talent in this area and his passion grew from there. UIT was born with a strong motto, to open the possibilities of technology to all. Paul and his team at UIT provide professional support for schools, businesses as well as residential clients. “If you have one or 100 computers, we will be able to sort you out,” Paul guarantees. With over 14 years business experience, UIT offers computer network management to over 300 business clients from Sydney, and Tauranga through to Kaitaia. From the basic fix solutions, to managing server and cloud data centre products within 24 hours, seven days a week monitoring and support, you’ll find an answer to your IT needs. The move to Kamo came with much excitement for the committed team of six as well as more customer parking

and a raised profile with plans for continued growth of the business. “We are really excited to be up here,” says Paul. “We are attracting new business and it’s a great community to work from.” In 2016 UIT will grow their team to meet the ongoing needs of long standing and loyal customers whilst growing the capacity to welcome new businesses on board and to explore opportunities that continue to arise in their industry. With a core focus on professional customer service at the forefront of everything they do. “We strive to be the most sought after IT firm in Northland, and this was a step toward that journey. We are now enjoying a fresh new working environment and the feedback from the customers has been very positive.” UIT is community conscious, sponsoring local football and junior rugby league teams, and TechQuest in local schools to name a few… UIT sell computer hardware including Compucon Servers, HP Laptops, Acer Chromebooks and more. They can setup and maintain small to large wireless and wired networks configuring all your equipment to work efficiently and welcome any challenge that comes their way Get in touch with UIT at our Kamo location 376 Kamo Road, call us on the telephone 09 4388484 or send us an email contact@uit.co.nz.. Unique checklist discovers hidden areas of profit in your business

85

W

hen you stop working in your business and start to work on it, the results are always dollars in the bank. But many business people are simply too busy to sit down and look at ways they can develop their business. Profit strategist Graham Hawkes helps them to do just that. With more than 40 years experience as an accountant and business growth specialist, Graham is well-qualified to help businesses find their hidden areas of profit. “I like to help businesses to become successful,” he says. Graham has developed a unique 29 point checklist from which he can identify potential areas of growth and savings for almost any business. The checklist takes only a few minutes to complete and can make a huge difference to the bottom line of your business. From that point, Graham will help them with simple marketing strategies and demonstrate how they can define their target market. “When we take a look at the business to find ways of adding value to it, it’s usually through things that can be done at a very low cost” Graham explains. And it’s not always businesses who are in trouble who benefit from his help. “Many successful business owners or managers would like to have somebody to talk to on a regular basis” said Graham. “In those cases, I act as a sounding board for new ideas for development, for maybe this month’s knotty problem, or for anything else they wish to talk about.”

As a sounding board for business owners, Graham measures any ideas against a simple criteria - “Will it help you to make more money from your business?” To arrange a free, on site 60 minute consultation, contact Graham Hawkes at Your Sounding Board on 021 395 122
