STUDENT LEADERS

Huanui College, founded in 2010, and set in the tranquil rural outskirts of Whangarei, Northland, draws upon open-minded, enterprising, supportive young adults to inject their energy and enthusiasm into this stimulating and expanding learning environment.

Emily Stolwerk - Head Prefect

Jamie Taylor - Head Prefect

Over the last six years I have attended Huanui College, the school has become like a family to me. I have learnt from my mistakes and used these to improve myself. It is an honour to be named Head Prefect for 2022. I am looking to be a link between students, staff, parents and the public. The success of the school relies on students feeling welcome and thriving during their time at Huanui College. As Head Prefect I wish to offer advice and support to pupils who may be struggling. This may be done by holding “office hours” once a week, where students are welcome to come and ask for help or tutoring, or even if it’s just offering a friendly face to talk to - as sometimes, that’s all we need.

This year at Huanui College, I would like to work on and see an improvement in the connections between students, particularly those within their respective whānau groups. I would also like to offer the following message to my fellow students: take advantage of every opportunity Huanui College offers, take advantage of the various sporting codes we support, take advantage of the activities on offer for period seven, and take advantage of the educational opportunities! Having classes with relatively lower numbers means that you have the opportunity to build a much stronger relationship with your teachers and that they will be much more able to push, aid, and guide you with support.

Kala Payinda - Deputy Head Prefect

Henry Storey - Deputy Head Prefect

A piece of advice I have for younger students is to not beat yourself up over difficulties in class, but instead realise it’s not that significant, and make a plan about how these problems will be overcome - whether that is meeting with a teacher for help, seeking out older students in tutoring sessions, or even asking classmates to spend a little extra time explaining the concepts. Many people are more willing to help than I used to think, and it was a genuine relief when I actually began utilising those resources. Not only did this help me become happier with my results, but also made me more confident in my abilities as I now had a good support background in case I ever had troubles in the future.

As the Deputy Head Prefect of Huanui College, I would like to improve overall quality by enriching the personal experience of each and every student here. We as the student leaders will achieve this by not only demonstrating a high level of respect around the school but also by encouraging the younger students to take part and have a responsibility both within and outside the classroom. By involving students in sports and academic challenges, we build team skills while working together in our whānau groups and continue to enhance competition within the school.

Natalya Newman - Deputy Head Prefect

Juliet Heaton - Whanangatanga Deputy Head Prefect

I want to represent the creative minds and voices of Huanui College. Whether it be drama, writing, music, art, or anything within the limitless spectrum of creativity, I want to make sure that creative-inclined students can express themselves, and that these qualities are reflected within the prefect group. This year, I hope that students will find prefects that they trust to lead them and represent their voices within Huanui College. I want to work with students using the Whānau mentoring systems, which will provide us with a healthy support system. This will expand at Huanui so that students themselves can learn from those before them and, in turn, help to guide the younger students.

SCHOOL PREFECTS (from left:)

Hello! I am Juliet, and I have attended Huanui College since Year 7. I am the Whanautanga Prefect for 2022. Being the Whanautanga Prefect is great because it is such a new role, and that means there is room for ideas and creativity - which is something I have always had a passion for. The meaning of whanaungatanga is a sense of family connection - a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. This is what I hope to provide for all members of Huanui College including past alumni.
