AshashappenedinAustralia, theGovernmentcannotkeep subsidisingthefueltaxforever. Herearetwopublictransport initiatives:

■ Acarpoolschemewhereby anyonewith 4ormorepeoplein theircargetfreealldayparking. Mustincludethreepassengers whowouldnormallybringtheir ownvehiclesintotown.We couldstartthistomorrow.

■ Ten-seaterminivanpublic transportschemeledbythe community. Atrialtobe expandedondemand.Council wouldfacilitatethishappening andunderwritelease.

A10-seaterminivanleaseis about$22/person/week.In areasnotservicedbypublic transport,thecommunitycould organisethemselvesto commutehometotownand backwithfreeall-dayparking. Everyvanwouldbeninefewer carsontheroad —less congestion,lowercommuting costsforpeople,lower emissions.

NRCreceivesover$1.5millionin ratepayerpublictransport subsidies —theywouldneedto contributeaswellascentral government. Thiswouldbe alow-costgamechangerforeveryone.

income.However,thisshouldnot be abarriertohavingimproved communityinfrastructure.I wouldendeavourtoworkhard withincouncil,marae,hapu¯, iwi andlocalcommunitiesto prioritisegrassrootssolutions.

2)Councilco-governance housingstrategy.Withinthis period, Iwouldexpecttoseethe implementationofthisstrategy withmoreaffordablehousing, andpapakaingaopportunities onMa¯oriland,througha collaborativeagency“hub”.

3)Planetaryhealth. Iexpectto see arolloutof arangeof projectsfromtheclimate adaptationstrategyonhowour communitiescanbestget preparedandyetstilluphold sustainableeconomicgrowth.
