NORTHLAND CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2018

The very successful 5th Annual Northland Construction Awards Night was held at Toll Stadium on 22 June 2018 with a record 204 people in attendance. The AGM was held on site prior to the Awards which confirmed there were no changes to the Executive Team and attendees were given a presentation by Brian Warren (Civil Contractors New Zealand Executive Council President) on the new initiative EP!C which has been rolled out to encourage people into working in the infrastructure industry.

A

s with previous years the night provided an excuse to glam up and overalls and high vis clothing was exchanged for formal dress (or the equivalent of in the Northland Construction Industry). The main objective of the awards evening is to recognise and showcase the achievements of the civil contracting industry here in Northland – The judges were looking for excellence in the finished projects, their people, safety, and the way they contribute to our community and environment. Although the number of entries was reduced this year the standard of entry was as impressive as ever with the judges having to make some difficult decisions to determine the winner in some categories.

In addition to the wonderful support from our Major Sponsors attendees also enjoyed the bar tab sponsored by Ten4 Engineering and the talent of the MC Graeme Severinson (Sevy) sponsored by Gough Cat, along with delicious catering from Absolute Caterers. The night was made richer by the Guest Speaker Toni Tait – Warrant Officer New Zealand Air Force speaking on the Invictus Games and topped off by fantastic music from local band Inertia. For the first time we offered a Door Prize being an Air New Zealand Mystery Weekend for 3 and the lucky winner was seated at the Clements Contractors table. Given the continued success of these awards we look forward to celebrating the local successes for many years to come.

he task was complex and they planned it well working around weather and school holidays. No one else was keen to do the job which required some bespoke manufacturing back at their yard. The job had a number of challenges including no cell phone coverage (almost unthinkable in how to manage this nowadays). It was a difficult and isolated site requiring smart thinking & planning. Good road traffic management. They kept Rd open until school holidays to place panels and managed to open road again 4 days early. There were no incidents, was on time & budget.

complex project, with good effort made to reduce the cost to the client, leaving them satisfied with end result.– A difficult site – some smart thinking by Contractor. For example:

• Difficult access for machinery • Good H&S practise – used harness for workers • Environment, Coastal wise use of silt fences • Practicable innovations

ROBINSON ASPHALTS

Winners of $500k to $1 million project- 2018 Northland Construction Awards

T

he team at Robinson Asphalts are extremely proud to have won the $500k to $1 million category award for the Te Mara Estate subdivision project at Maungatapere. Robinson Asphalts turn vision into reality and this is exactly what happened for their clients at Te Mara Estate, they had a vision and are very happy with the end result. Sections are now on the market at this high quality sustainable living subdivision. David Gurnell was the Senior Foreman on site and Mark Smith was Contract Manager. Between them they have more than 50 years of industry experience. But it’s all about team work at Robinson Asphalts and the whole team involved can be very proud of the excellent workmanship and end result they produced. So much so that they won an award for it! It’s always great to get that recognition in the industry. Last year Alan and Annie Johnston and their team at Robinson Asphalts celebrated a major milestone -45 years of first class contracting in Northland and 25 years since they (Alan and Annie) bought the business in 1992 from Annie’s parents Peter and Joan Robinson, who started Robinson Asphalts in 1972. The business has grown and diversified significantly over the years and now employs over 40 staff

including 3 licenced building practitioners. Alan and Annie speak very highly of their outstanding team, many of whom have been with the company for a very long time. Some were even with the company under the previous ownership more than 25 years ago. “Our team are proud of their work in Northland – quality and client satisfaction are hugely important to us – it’s our number one focus and all the staff understand that. We’re a

local Company employing local people - we believe in building strong relationships and sharing in the success of every project. Although Robinson Asphalts is certainly well known and highly regarded in Northland, Annie says one of the biggest misconceptions is that they only do Asphalt – “We offer the full package of civil contracting services, in fact we do as much concrete as we do Asphalt. We’ve often considered changing our name, to capture the broader scope of works we offer, but it always comes back to the excellent reputation we have built over 45 years that is synonymous with the name!” We don’t just do large commercial jobs – we offer the full range of residential contracting from small projects to major siteworks, subdivisions, driveways, retaining walls, timber work and tennis courts – we can take care of it all from start to finish and we make the experience as hassle free as possible. No need to deal with multiple contractors. “We are absolutely committed to delivering a first class job every time – no shortcuts, no hassles. We go the extra mile, we make it easy for you and we stand by our work” First Class job every time. mart thinking by Robinson Asphalts. Design changes for an improved finished result. Rain gardens & bridges & storm water outlets through bush reserve towards State Highway 14 created complexities.

Client very happy with results. H&S practise very good. The site was in an area that previously held water and very difficult to get controlled drainage discharge right. Smart Design & smart Contracting all in one package.

top job done – A lot of frustrated road users during construction period but now a great result for all road and pedestrians users. Some smart engineering plan changes during the job involving the block walls & concrete medium strip with a lucky break having the necessary steel barriers (for the bridge crossing) in Auckland. A lot of variations, traffic wide loads,

temporary traffic lights & heavy rainfalls to deal with, they handled all these situations with ease. Environmental issues with the main creek very close was also controlled well. The block walls again a credit to the builders. H&S -they were honest and had a couple of incidents, but their H&S policy put them back on track. The stop go staff always had a smile on their face through the whole construction period.

e are especially proud of 2 of our entries; Lemons Hill Slip and Pukenui Washout. These projects were the result of severe weather events and to say they hugely affected our communities and environment is a massive understatement. Having the opportunity to repair these disasters for Northland is the greatest privilege, people are at the heart of everything we do and we are humbled to deliver critical emergency response for our region. And while Pukenui didn’t bring us home the gong at the

end of the night, it is a project we consider to be a significant feather in our cap. To also receive recognition for the urban improvements at Kensington and our WDC maintenance crew’s incomparable health & safety record was exceptionally rewarding, knowing the mammoth effort our teams have put into these projects. The quality of projects entered overall in 2018 is testament to the high level of work being constructed by Northland companies – something we can all be proud of.

lliot Wright started at the bottom and now has ambitions to own his own business. Like his mantra, “Do it once and do it right”. Grader driving, is the primo job on a road site and we understand and it usually takes a very long time to be competent – a great achievement to be doing this within two years Elliot is now running his own crew which is a great achievement only 4 yrs of being in the civil construction industry. His employers are obviously proud of his.

I

t was noted that the project dealt with some very tricky issues. For example Kauri Die Back, sediment and erosion control, and re-vegetation control. Management of possible PTA contamination was of particular concern. While this was an emergency works project it is good to see the cooperation of the various parties: DOC, NRC and Iwi to address the environmental

issues. The Agency recognises the work done to ensure stakeholders are involved and parties of decision making from initial thoughts to final delivery. Sourcing the seed and plants from the local nurseries and making sure the species were consistent with existing species were undertaken. This is a credit to Fulton Hogan.

Judge’s Comments

S

arra Ali will have very proud employers and work colleagues on her winning this award. She has put thought into her submission and the judges agree entirely with her about what leadership is and what it takes. Being able to step into any role in the organisation and do it well. Sarra leads by example, from loading trucks to developing and administrating the various systems needed to run the business efficiently. James Corlett’s comments, as Northern CCNZ Regional Manager are “ I have seen Sarra take on a huge workload both as an employee of Clements Contracting and as past secretary of the Northland CCNZ

branch. He says it’s been a real pleasure to see Sarra grown into these roles and take leadership of any issues that evolved from these responsibilities” James also thanks Sarra for his 2 month abstinence from drinking alcohol after reluctantly being coerced into one of her sambuca drinking schools once too often. Keith Cocking will back him up on that one. The judges would also like to mention the magnificent legacy the Northland CCNZ Branch has had with Branch Secretaries. Of more recent times Bev Bowling, Erin Wright, Sarra Ali and now Tracey McKenzie who has taken on the job with gusto.

ongratulations to Clements contractors who have shown once again the commitment they have to the community they live and work within. The judges would like to add that they are also very aware that most if not all of the Northland CCNZ members contribute in

some way generously to the community most of which is given without any expectation of recognition and in many situations prefer to remain anonymous. We would like to ask Clements Contracting to accept this award on behalf of all of these contributing contractors from a very grateful community.
