NORTHLAND CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2019

The Northland Branch of the New Zealand Civil Contractors held their annual Construction Awards event at the Northland Event Centre on 5 July with over 200 people in attendance. The AGM held prior to the Awards reflected a first for Northland Branch – there were six nominations for four positions available on the Executive Committee and as a result a vote from members in attendance was required.

F

or the awards themselves there was a record number entries this year (38 in all beating the previous record of 32) – the main objective of the awards is to recognise and show case the achievements of the civil contracting here in Northland – the judges were looking for excellence in the finished projects, their people, safety and the way they contribute to our community and the environment. The standard of entries was outstanding and kept the judges busy for several weeks. The inaugural Women in Contracting Award – open to any level of involvement in the industry from the work site, the administration team, to management, saw a high calibre of entrants and was a closely run contest. This year also saw CCNZ Northland Branch Life Memberships awarded to Brad Flower and Alistair McIntyre for their long and

outstanding service to the Association, the Branch, and to the contracting industry itself. Fantastic sponsorship support meant that attendees were able to enjoy the talent of MC Charmaine Soljak, hear from Riki Lum, from Clements Contractors, who took out the 2018 Northland Excavator Operator Competition title and the 2019 National Excavator Operator Competition title, enjoy listening and dancing to band Kurfew, and go into the draw to win the fantastic door prize. Guests enjoyed the surprise attendance of the Northland Rugby Taniwha who turned up as part of the presentation to the winner of the Hirepool Construction Projects over $1,000,000 category. This was another successful event and we look forward to celebrating the local successes again next year.

ames has displayed dedication not only to his training but to his life outside of contracting. His drive towards gaining a qualification has not distracted him from supporting his family and friends outside of work. He is a role model for others looking to gain entry into the civil construction industry. Coming from 3 generations of a contracting family the judges realise the extra pressure there is for him to perform. James, although only 20 years old, has shown maturity and is well suited for a leadership role in the future.

his was a highly specified residential project including a cantilevered outdoor stairway which gives a floating effect to their appearance. Precision to all aspects of the concrete and blockwork was required and achieved. Onsite training in the use of laser technology was given during construction. A high degree of collaboration with the client and supplliers resulted in the excellent outcome of this complex project. The fact that the owner of the property was also the designer and client who gave his complete satisfaction to the outcome is a compliment to Robinson Asphalts.

Winners of Humes 2019 Construction Projects $0 to $100,000 Award and Hynds Pipes Systems 2019 Construction Projects $500,0000 to $1,000,000 Award

The team at Robinson Asphalts are extremely proud to have won two of the four Project categories at the 2019 CCNZ Northland Construction Awards. This is testament to the pride that the Robinson Asphalts team take in their work and the continual focus on delivering a First Class job every time. The winning projects were: Sportsville Dargaville - Multipurpose Courts & Civil Works (Hynds Pipe Systems Construction Projects $500,000 - $1000000) and the McClean Landscaping project (Humes Construction Projects $0 -$100,000) It’s all about team work at Robinson Asphalts. It’s always great to get recognition in the industry but projects can only be successful with great collaboration between the client and other key stakeholders. “For these projects we are particularly grateful to the Kauri Coast Recreational Society and Griffiths & Associates Ltd (Project Managers)

ECT

“We are absolutely committed to delivering a first class job every time – no shortcuts, no hassles. We go the extra mile, we make it easy for you and we stand by our work” for selecting and trusting us to deliver the valuable community driven Sportsville project. Also to local Architect Roger McClean (Designgroup Architects h & k) and his wife Kim for choosing us to partner with Busck Concrete (key supplier) to transform their vision into reality” That’s our purpose at Robinson Asphalts to turn vision into reality - we make it happen so people can have a positive sense of progress, place and pride. These projects were both quite challenging for different reasons but both required a great

deal of planning, precision, skill, innovation and problem solving and excellent communication was key. Tom Taylor was Contract Manager for Sportsville with David Wright as the Site Foreman. Mark Smith was Contract Manager for the McClean project and Tim Brocklehurst was the Builder/Site Foreman, and of course

there were many more on the teams involved who can all take great pride in these awards. The McClean project was an impressive and innovative design involving a series of cascading precast concrete steps and landings cantilevered to give a floating effect along with plastered concrete masonry retaining walls, pathways, fences, handrails, spa foundations and lighting. The Sportsville Dargaville contract was for the full construction of 4 new multi-purpose asphalt sports courts and the upgrade of two existing courts. This package involved complex earthworks, levels, drainage, and stormwater, specialist 3m high fencing, sports nets, pathways and a concrete block Volley Wall – all on a tight and hard earned budget through community fund-raising and grants. His nominator for this award said about Brad “ He helps others to grow and succeed in not only their jobs but also within their communities and family environment. The judges concur with those comments. Brad’s father has had an obvious influence on his life, especially his working life, and his leadership is borne from those influences. The judges felt the success of this project was attributable to the following key factors: • • • • •

Early client engagement at the planning stage. Forward planning notification to all stakeholders. Road realignment to protect the nearby estuary. Road realignment through the existing limestone quarry thus utilizing it for cut/fill operations. Tight environmental controls which satisfied NRC to permit construction through the winter period. • Excellent community engagement to ensure local people were kept informed of progress and any traffic diversions. • Taking into account the cultural significance of the site, early iwi engagement and training staff in these aspects of the contract. Congratulations for delivering this highly successful project on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of the New Zealand Transport Agency.

ulton Hogan was delighted to have taken home the ‘Big One’ from the 2019 Northland Construction Awards: Hirepool Construction Projects over $1,000,000 - for Matakohe Bridges Fulton Hogan undertook this project for the NZ Transport Agency, replacing the two single lane wooden Matakohe Bridges (known as Hardies and Anderson) located on State Highway 12 near Matakohe. The new 2.5km road alignment has removed the tight curves and short straights and will improve safety on this section of SH12. Construction began in January 2018 and the full length of the new road was open to vehicles in May 2019. Landscaping and other minor variation works will continue through the 2019 winter. Over 500 people have been inducted onto this project since it began. Being inducted, and completing the health and safety training necessary before you can go out onto the site for this number of people provides context of its size.

We built 2 bridges – one 191m long (Piringatahi), six-span bridge over Matakohe River and one 60m long two-span bridge (named Te Ao Marama Hou) over Parerau Creek. The bridge piles varied in length from 14m to 20m, the bridge piers are 10m up in the air. 130m of temporary staging was used to provide construction access to build the piers. Each bridge beam (there are 5 per span) weighed 50 tonnes and was transported to site using heavy haulage units from West Auckland, as there is nothing in Northland large enough to transport such heavy weights. Delivering such a critical project for our local community is something Fulton Hogan takes pride in.
