WHANGAREI’S COMMERCIAL HEART:
Port Rd, Kioreroa and Porowini Ave
F
OR MANY, THE PORT ROAD, KIOREROA AND POROWINI AREA IS SIMPLY A CONVENIENT STOP FOR MARINE AND INDUSTRIAL NEEDS AND SPECIALIST SERVICES – HOWEVER THE HISTORY OF THE LOWER HATEA RIVER AND
SURROUNDS IS TRULY SOMETHING SPECIAL. From the earliest settlement of Whangarei, the Hatea River has played an integral part in both industry, transport, trade and communication, with many of the very first settlers creating homesteads directly upon the riverside. Many of Whangarei’s most familiar names such as William Carruth, Gilbert Mair, Eugene Cafler, Robert Reyburn and Henry Walton were among the earliest pioneers to the Whangarei area, with the streets, parks and monuments of Whangarei reflecting the importance of the role they played in our city’s foundation. The advent of the railway in the 1930’s however prompted a decline in the use of the Hatea River, which had been the major source of commerce, communication and travel since 1849.
PORT KIOREROA AND THE DEEP WATER CHANNEL: early exports, current trade
O
riginally a timber-milling site, Whangarei enjoyed a thriving commercial scene, with commerce from the Northland region including kauri gum, coal, and native timber. While trade and commerce dropped off in the early 1840’s as the pioneering settlers relocated to Auckland to avoid local conflict, industry soon re-established, and ship building began to feature prominently. Although we all know of the Port Road area, and any involved with marine commerce will know our harbour entrance area as the Port of Whangarei, the original name and structure of the Whangarei port was quite different to how it is presented today. The Opau Wharf, completed in 1904, was situated 2 miles north of the Hatea River, and was eventually connected by rail across the harbour to the Onerahi Wharf in 1911. The railway line was connected over the harbour using a causeway, with a 10 metre lifting span (known as ‘Gull Roost’) allowing for thoroughfare when required. Remnants of this disused railway can be enjoyed in Onerahi, on Boswell’s Track, along the Waimahanga Walkway. The two ports and the railway span were eventually closed down and destroyed by 1933, in favour of an 8-acre turning bay and

LOCAL BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE: Port Road, Kioreroa and Porowini
L
ongstanding businesses such as Norsand Boat Yard, Whangarei Chainsaw and Lawnmowing Services, Ship Repair NZ and Auto One have flourished through many changes in the area, becoming part of Whangarei’s commercial heritage. Their experiences of having operated from Whangarei’s riverside location and surrounds has given them a unique perspective of local personalities and commerce, and has shaped he way they conduct their enterprises both now and into the future. Located in the calm, sheltered waters of Whangarei Harbour, Ship Repair NZ enjoys access to one of only four deep water ports in New Zealand. With a large slipway for vessels up to 1800 tonne, Ship Repair NZ is able to handle two larger ships at once, while their second 40 tonne slipway is ideal for smaller vessels. Their onshore services allow for comprehensive heavy engineering and machine fabrication, offering complete refits, repairs, surveying and the replacement of refrigeration coils. For many years, this local business has thrived in the Port Road environment, making the most of Whangarei’s spectacular deep water port facilities. Norsand Boatyard is another Port Road institution, providing an invaluable service for national and international marine travellers. With provision for up to 100 yachts on hardstand, and a concrete slipway having capacity for vessels up to 120 tonnes in weight and 11 metres in beam, this working boatyard offers everything a boatie could possibly need for boat repairs and maintenance.

This access to a deep water channel has allowed commerce to flourish, giving Whangarei the ability to trade on a global level, and boosting the Port Road and Kioreroa area into the thriving industrial hub it is today.

enabling them to provide quicker, better service and giving industrial clients much better accessibility. Next Edition Kitchens relocated to Kioreroa Road early last year. Their ever-expanding team called for bigger premises, complete with a showroom and customer parking. Originally a meatworks plant, their Kioreroa Road factory was completely re-fitted to suit its new purpose. Fittingly, the team chose to keep the Engine Room sign above the door as they claim this is where all the work happens.
LOOKING AHEAD: family fun times coming to Kioreroa Road!
B ■ Co-owner Blair Scothern, right and Patrick Nicholl on the kart track - John Stone Known throughout the Pacific Islands as the best stopover for boat repairs, Norsand Boatyard provides work for countless local marine tradesmen and maritime businesses. Also providing their own in-house services, Norsand are happy to oversee boat refits and maintenance, managing work on behalf of boat owners, or the owners are welcome to work on their boats themselves. Such an invaluable service brings many international travellers to Whangarei who would otherwise seek assistance elsewhere, providing a welcome boost to our local economy. Offering service work on vehicles and selling auto parts for most makes and models, Auto One Whangarei has been located on upper Port Road for over 9 years now. The popular auto workshop has moved twice since 2002, from James Street to Okara Drive, and
now to it’s current Port Road location, giving the business a strong road frontage and a larger volume of daily traffic. Another business to benefit from increased traffic due to their central location is Whangarei Chainsaw and Lawnmower Services, on 20 Porowini Avenue. The history of this company is quite something – having operated from the same location for over 40 years, the business has seen the Porowini area grow from a dead-end street into a highvolume traffic and pedestrian location. Well-known electricians Henwood Electrical Ltd had been based in Kamo since 1974, but 2003 saw a move to their current location in Hewlett Street, where they have continued to grow their client base. Being so centrally located in the Port of Whangarei area has a big impact on the industrial and service side of their business,

ig changes are coming to Kioreroa Road, and for Northland families, this is big news indeed! Those who have felt the lack in children’s entertainment here in Whangarei will be excited to hear that their worries will soon be over: a new family fun park is about to open its doors to the public, right here in Whangarei. Blair and Sarah Scothern, of local heavy engineering firm Blasco, had noticed the general absence of family entertainment in Whangarei. Over a year ago, they decided to address the problem themselves. Their concept, named ‘Karsplat’ is a family fun park spread over almost 2 hectares of central city land, on Kioreroa Road. The park is set to feature attractions such as Go Karts, paintball, electric cars (with remote controls, allowing even the youngest guests to have a turn) and Nerf Gun Wars; and will have onsite refreshments for family enjoyment. Karsplat is in the final planning stages, and the focus is firmly centred on providing affordable family fun for locals. The Hatea River has provided commerce, travel and communication for Whangarei from the very beginning, and the areas surrounding the Port of Whangarei continue to benefit from this unique feature of our city.

MIKES ENGINES: we take your engine seriously
■ Mikes Engines on Rewa Rewa Road in Whangarei
Y
OU COULD CONSIDER OUR WORKSHOP AS A WORKPLACE – BUT WE DON’T. WE COME IN EVERY DAY TO A JOB WE LOVE, AND WHEN YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO, IT CAN’T REALLY BE CALLED WORK, CAN IT? Mikes Engines started life as Mikes Engine Reconditioning over 30 years ago, down a back alley in a small unit off Commerce Street. It was a place of passion and ingenuity, where the founder of the business, Mike Brittliff, spent countless hours reconditioning troublesome engines, using his many years of experience to isolate issues and turn out smooth-running works of art. The business quickly expanded into a second unit next door, building up a strong and well-deserved reputation for excellence in both the quality of their work, and their level of customer service and advice.
Sadly, Mike recently passed away - but his legacy continues. New owners Steve and Kaylee Walker and their talented team Ashley, Terry and Bronns have breathed new life into Mikes Engines since purchasing the business in 2014, staying true to Mike’s vision and dedication to customer service, but adding their own unique perspective to bring even more value to their customers. Mikes Engines now operates from a new location, on 80 Rewa Rewa Road, which allows for much more space within the workshop and gives the business a larger, more attractive, and highly visible road frontage! Mikes Engines now also offers so much more than engine reconditioning: customers are able to source nearly any part for most makes and models of vehicles, and the experienced team in the workshop can solve engine troubles from niggly noises through to complete engine rebuilds. Steve, Kaylee and the team are finding that their customers come from surprisingly far afield for their services too, showing that passion for your business does indeed pay off. For those of you who aren’t exactly up to the play when it comes to engines, the friendly team at Mike’s are happy to oblige with helpful advice. They don’t expect everyone to share their passion, but they won’t let you walk away without a new appreciation for your vehicle!

The slaughterhouse and engine room were redeveloped early last year. More recently, the Browns have built a ramp to use the upper level canteen as parking for a prospective tenant. “That upper level was 600 square metres,” he says. “We couldn’t lease that out without parking to match, so we built the ramp.” He says the key advantage to redeveloping a piece of history is that it has a solid structure. The site also has its own power supply, with two transformer rooms on site. “It’s been quite interesting [redeveloping]. In full operation, there was around 200 staff members here, it was one of Whangarei’s biggest businesses. Now, seeing all these other businesses booming in the same spot is quite satisfying really.”

NEW PIRTEK SHOWROOM ON PORT ROAD
BUILDING A TOP TEAM
Pirtek Northland Ltd, one of the largest suppliers of hydraulics hose and fittings in Northland, is on the move to accommodate its growing range of products and services. Local operators Peter Crene and Mike Lincoln are looking forward to opening a new purpose-built building on Monday 3rd April, where they have created a dedicated space to showcase Pirtek’s extensive product range, backed by local service and expertise.
GLOBAL BRAND BACKED BY LOCAL SERVICE
Pirtek is one of the largest global brands in hydraulic hose products, with Pirtek products now being sold around the world. The Pirtek Northland franchise was launched in 2013, and has enjoyed steady growth among local customers. Up until this month, the company had operated from the same premises as sister company LC Hydraulics, but with growing demand and the need for a dedicated facility including showroom, workshop and hose assembly area - a purpose built premises has been established, just over the road from LCH at 259a Port Road. LCH will remain in the original premises at 120 Port Road, with the two business continuing to work together to service all of Northland’s hydraulic needs.
24/7 MOBILE SERVICE AVAILABLE
Peter says he and business partner Mike were keen to buy into the Pirtek franchise because “it’s a great quality product with really good back up support. We wanted to be able to offer our customers top quality products and this was the best way to ensure we could give them the best”. The pair have built up Pirtek Northland’s fleet to include four Mobile Service Units for 24/7 on call support as well as the facility to supply and build hose assemblies in the workshop. LOCAL COMPANY WITH A CLEAR VISION When LC Hydraulics (LCH) opened their doors 13 years ago, the vision was simple: to provide Northland companies with the best value, highest quality hydraulic services, including design, repairs and maintenance and dedicated 24/7 mobile support.
Two Comp ompanies, One Vision Vi
Working together, LC Hydraulics (LCH) H) and Pirtek Northland have successfully grown to become one of Northland’ss lleading suppliers of hydraulic services and parts, with the two companies ies now set to expand even further. It didn’t take long for LCH to find its place in the local market, with a steadily growing client list from Northland’s leading companies across the automotive, civil, forestry, construction, marine, agricultural and heavy transport industries.
Following the purchase of the local Pirtek franchise four years ago, LCH and Pirtek Northland have built up a combined team of 14 dedicated staff, operating the joint workshop as well as four mobile hose service vehicles providing 24/7 on call support.
LCH owners Peter Crene and Mike Lincoln are a couple of local lads who have always put family first. In fact, they started their business 13 years ago in order to create a better future for their families, and over that time they have also steadily grown the LCH family. “We are incredibly proud of our 14 staff,” says Peter.“Their support over the years has been fantastic.Their hard work and expertise is paramount to our success”. The team include highly experienced hydraulic specialists and general engineering trade specialists, as well as four apprentices, reflecting the company’s commitment to give back to the trade, and the local community.
CUSTOMERS ALWAYS KNOW BEST
Peter and Mike believe customers always know best - which makes it all the more rewarding that so many local businesses have supported them over so many years, from industries including forestry, construction, marine, agricultural, automotive and heavy transport industry. Mike says they owe huge thanks to all the local contractors - civil, quarrying, roading - who’ve supported them to grow. “We’ve been able to build up to what we are now because of them. We put huge focus on service delivery and we really value every client.”
INNOVATIVE EXCELLENCE
As well as excelling in all hydraulic services, the LCH team has also enjoyed a number of engineering design challenges over the years, with one such example being the highly innovative broom sweepers they are now building and delivering all over New Zealand. LCH is proud to take on the little jobs (fixing a farm tractor for one of the neighbours) as well as the big jobs, with complex hydraulic solutions being delivered for a wide range of high-end customers, including a number of offshore companies. LCH has also achieved secondary accreditation with ACC and work hard to ensure their team are trained and aware of best practices and also the hazards they come across day to day.

WHANGAREI’S NEWEST PARK
A
COLOURFUL MURAL REPRESENTING A SAFE PASSAGE INTO THE FUTURE AND PERSONAL JOURNEY NOW GRACES A PARK THAT WILL CONNECT WHANGAREI’S HATEA LOOP TO PORT RD. Mike Tupaea, who has a fine arts background but has recently been creating murals, and renowned Auckland graffiti artist Charles Williams have put their creative minds together again to create a vibrant mural on the walls of a park which will connect the Hatea Loop to Port Rd. It comes after the pair collaborated on a mural at the Otaika Shops last year. Mr Tupaea said the focus of the park was around rangatahi (youth). This formed the basis of what the mural would look like. “This particular mural is about inspiring rangatahi. One of the korero around the Whangarei Harbour was that they used to light these big fires to illuminate the sky so if you were out fishing you would have a safe passage back into the harbour. “The patiki patterns are to symbolise a safe passage into your future and the kowhaiwhai design is a mangopare which represents perseverance and strength. It’s about your personal journey,” he said. The artwork depicts a karearea (falcon) which was the only bird with a connection to fire as its tail would catch fire, Mr Tupaea said. The bird is surrounded by plywood cut outs of patiki patterns and kowhaiwhai design. “We worked together, we gathered the korero, we interviewed a few different people and we went with our guidance.” Mr Tupaea said the Whangarei District Council, who commissioned the artists, gave the pair the right to do some investigation into the history of Whangarei. He said Manaaki Waipouri and Tash Nikora also helped create the mural. Mr Tupaea said they used a quick-drying acrylic paint for the artwork which was completed on Friday. “We started Sunday but it’s been roughly five days from 9am to 9pm. That’s longer than your average work day,” he said. The wall which runs parallel to the mural will also be painted,
creating a tunnel of art. Mr Tupaea said he and Mr Williams would be creating a mural in July based on the history of hapu Te Parawhau. Mr Tupaea said he was pleased to see murals brightening up Whangarei. “I think murals change the atmosphere of the place. I think we’re

WHANGAREI CHAINSAW AND LAWNMOWER SERVICES: 40 years in Porowini Ave
N
OT MANY BUSINESSES IN WHANGAREI CAN SAY THEY HAVE STAYED IN THE SAME LOCATION, OFFERING MORE OR LESS THE SAME SERVICES, TO THE SAME PEOPLE (YES, ORIGINAL CLIENTS STILL DROP IN) FOR OVER 40 YEARS. Local Porowini Ave ■ Whangarei Chainsaw and Lawnmower Services in Porowini Ave business Whangarei Chainsaw and Lawnmower Services can claim exactly that however – and their experience of working from Porowini Ave for over 40 years is certainly unique! Having started life in 1971 operating from the back of a Combi, the business was then known as Saw Doctor; and focussed mainly on – you guessed it – chainsaw repairs and maintenance. It wasn’t long before the original owner needed a more permanent location for his fledgling business, and so he teamed up with a business partner and moved the business into a shed on the same site where it is located today: 20 Porowini Ave. Due to a strong reputation and a loyal customer base, the business continued to grow, slowly moving into the other structures already onsite. Eventually two skyline garages (first one, followed not long after by the second) were erected to house the successful business, which by this point had been renamed Whangarei Chainsaw and Lawnmower Services and was under new ownership. The services offered have also grown over the years, to include any work on any small engine; and while their location may not have changed, their surroundings certainly have! From a dead-end, quiet back water area to the bustling big-name destination it is today, Porowini Ave is now a heavy-traffic highvisibility street; which suits this longstanding business just fine.

HANGAREI SALOON AND STOCK CAR CLUB (WSSCC) HAVE EARNED A NATION-WIDE RESPECT FOR THE HIGH OF IT’S TRACK, PROFESSIONALISM AND FRIENDLINESS. HOSTING MAJOR REGIONAL AND NATIONAL TITLES THAT ATTRACT MANY DRIVERS, CARS AND SPECTATORS IS COMMONPLACE. President Rex Roycroft is a founding member of the club since 1980. His entire family have also competed since they were 12 (the minimum qualifying age). Speedway is very family-orientated with cars being shared by sliblings and generations. These cars hardly have time to cool down, fuel up and be race-ready again. Drivers can take as little as three minutes to swap. Many young drivers can hardly see over the dashboard and require booster seats. Roycroft proves that age is to deterrent to sucessful driving. He jokes that for the last five years his maiin sponsor is the Old Age Pension. Last season the Youth Ministock Trans-Tasman Show Down organisers asked WSSCC to host one round of the competition. This of course was gladly provided. The Aussie contingent commented that they’d like to take the track back home with them. The governing body, Circle Track Racing Association of New Zealand (CTRANZ) has held numerous work-shops at WSSCC due to the consistent high level of track preparation and vehicle scrutineering (for safety and legality). A popular item on race day is the kids’ rides. There are many young-at-heart adults (who refer to themselves as geriatric delinquents) who take the opportunity to go for a ride without the adrenalineproducing exhilaration of a full-on race that in well in excess of legal road speeds. Although most grades are non-contact, the vast majority of racing cars bear witness to frequent crashes, known as paint-swapping. WSSCC is particularly noted for the success of it’s lady drivers in Production Saloon in New Zealand national titles. Anita Sloot and Livvy Blacklock (once each), Stephanie Grieve (twice) and Didi Roycroft (three times). Their motto is “From mascara to mud in three seconds flat”. Many drivers such as Ross Campbell of Hikurangi stop racing for about 20 years due to other committments. They feel an overwhelming need to scratch the itch. Ross now shares their Commodore with his wife Sharyn who came second in the New Zealand title in her first year of racing. “Shazza” is 5’ tall and weighs less than 50ks, proving that race savvy beats brawn every time.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: turns a vision into a reality
N
O MATTER WHO WE ARE OR WHERE WE COME FROM, WE ALL DESERVE TO HAVE A DECENT LIFE. WE DESERVE TO FEEL STRENGTH AND STABILITY DAY AFTER DAY. WE DESERVE TO KNOW WE HAVE THE POWER TO TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES AND BUILD OUR OWN FUTURES. At Habitat for Humanity, this is what unites us. Through shelter, we empower. Our shared vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Because you, me, we — we’re all humans. And every single one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future. There are numerous ways in which Habitat for Humanity makes this vision a reality. Our Home Ownership programme builds homes for families who are living in substandard housing. The rent-then-buy model helps families build up a deposit which they can use when seeking independent finance to eventually buy their home from Habitat. Habitat’s Home Repair programme helps homeowners who through hardship are struggling to maintain their homes. We understand that many low-income homeowners simply cannot afford to pay for their house maintenance because most of their income is spent on their weekly expenses. When something breaks down, the damage gets worse and the costs for repairs rise, thus a downward spiral can be the result. Our Home Repair Programme provides an affordable solution, the homeowners pay back the cost of the work at a rate that is affordable to them and the work is carried out by a trusted Habitat contractor. Both programmes make a significant difference and none of this would be possible without the support the local community give to Habitat through shopping, donating and volunteering at the ReStore second hand charity shop. The ReStore generates vital cash-flow to support those in need throughout Northland, New Zealand and around the world. Every sale bangs a nail, so visit the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and enjoy a massive 20% off everything in store throughout April. Selling
household items, clothing, appliances, bric-a-brac, furniture, DIY supplies and building materials, there is something for everyone. Together we make a difference!
