Kerikeri Retirement Village
S
ettling into retirement is as easy as 1-2-3 at Kerikeri Retirement Village. That’s because whether you want a 1 bedroom apartment, a 2 bedroom townhouse or a 3 Bedroom Cottage they have something to suit. Village Administrator Frances Shaw says that people move into the village for a variety of reasons. Some move in when they’re in their early stages of retirement. “They’re couples who are fit and active but would rather be playing golf or travelling than caring for a large property. They love the fact that they can lock up and go and leave the work to someone else”. “Often they’ve sold the family home and farm and they’re using their equity to take cruises or visit the family overseas. It’s the glamorous face of retirement and these people are living life to the full!” Some are couples in their middle retirement where one partner has health issues and might need extra support at home. “We’re also very popular with people who are on their own and want to be around others with similar interests. Our two bedroom cottages are great for entertaining and having family to
The cottages have generous outdoor living areas with ample space to entertain.
stay and there’s enough room to keep up with a hobby”. Mrs Shaw says the Trust is excited to be building again, starting with three 2 bedroom townhouses. She’s confident the units will sell quickly with many registering their interest early. “Our units are the perfect mix of carefree living and excellent security”. The one bedroom apartments are most popular with those in their more senior years. Centrally located within the village, the apartments offer good
privacy and have nice sunny lounges and patios. “They’re a really good size for one person….big enough to keep busy but small enough to be manageable. And having a kitchen preserves their independence.” The onsite care facility is another reason some people elect to move into the Village. Mrs Shaw says that “people like to know it’s there if they need it, but actually a good proportion remain in their home with extra support”.
Approved pets are allowed within the village.
With such a wide variety of accommodation, set on over 11 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, she describes the Village as feeling “more like an upmarket subdivision, where seniors just happen to live, than a Retirement Village”.

Prepare Your Home for the Future As we get older and our lifestyle needs change, many of us choose to live in retirement villages or rest homes.
W
hile both are popular options with benefits of their own, there are also plenty of people who prefer to stay in the familiar surroundings of their own home. If you are one of them, it’s time to start looking at how you can adapt your home to suit the needs of an older you – or to consider downsizing to something more practical. As one researcher has noted, most homes have “Peter Pan” plans, as they seem designed for people who will never grow old. And that’s why you need to cast a really critical eye on your surroundings, without being swayed too much by emotional attachment. If you become less mobile and have to use a wheelchair, how easy would it be to get around inside – or even get in and out of the house? If your home is on two or more levels, how will you get between floors when using the stairs is no longer an option? Consider whether the kitchen would be easy to use safely in your 70s,
80s and even beyond, and whether bathrooms are easily accessible. Think about how you would get in and out of the shower or bath if you were a bit wobbly on your pins. Check out the living spaces and bedrooms, and don’t forget the details, like whether light switches are easy to find and whether phone connections are in convenient places. Is your present lighting adequate, or does it need updating? And assuming you’ll still be driving in later years, is the garage easy to get in and out of? Then take a look outside. If there are steps to negotiate, are they safe? And what about decks? Then there’s the garden. You might enjoy spending time in the great outdoors now, but what about in 15 or 20 years’ time? Fortunately, there are practical things you can do to adapt your present home. And if you plan for the future and have work done in stages, it needn’t be horrendously expensive. Even something as simple as decluttering your home and relocating furniture can be a big step forward, and won’t cost a thing.

Falls cause huge numbers of injuries in the home, but you can help prevent it happening to you by installing grab handles in the bathroom and safety rails on stairs and steps. Install non-slip flooring in bathrooms and move loose mats, rugs and carpets somewhere where you can’t trip over them. Creating a wheelchair-friendly home calls for more drastic action, but a skilled builder can eliminate raised entrances, both into the house and between rooms. Minor but effective bathroom and kitchen alterations can be relatively straightforward too. A wet floor bathroom is much easier to use than a conventional one, as is a toilet with plenty of space around it. Outside, non-slip pavers are a good idea. Make sure the driveway is smooth and unobstructed and that the mailbox is easy to reach and open. Access between floors in a larger home will inevitably call for a more costly solution such as a lift. Fortunately these days there are plenty of options, some of them designed and made right here in Northland. Just check the phone directory – or do a quick search on Google.

Regular Health Checks Vital As we age, our bodies change and health issues become more frequent and sometimes more serious.
T
hat’s why it’s important to have regular medical checks – and we don’t just mean limiting visits to your GP to when you’re feeling really bad. Regular visits can help prevent more serious problems later in life, and could even save your life. The same goes for visits to other health professionals. Few people enjoy a session at the dentist’s but again, a regular check will prevent expensive problems later. As the New Zealand Dental Association points out, there are many things a dentist can spot during a dental check-up, like weakening older fillings, early signs of gum disease, tooth decay and other oral problems. It’s vital also to look after your eyesight, because issues like macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, are common with age. If you’re over 60, have a yearly check and schedule more regular visits if you already suffer from eye problems. Hearing defects become more obvious as we age, and in New Zealand an estimated
50 – 60 per cent of the adult population over the age of 60 has some kind of hearing impairment. The good news is that most of these problems are treatable, but again, regular checks are best. If all this sounds like bad and expensive news, remember you can do plenty to help yourself by maintaining a well balanced diet, keeping mind and body active and forming safety habits to avoid accidents and falls. Smoking doesn’t make sense whatever age you are and if you enjoy a tipple or two, remember that as far as alcohol is concerned, moderation is by far the best policy. There’s endless debate as to what constitutes a healthy diet and what’s declared good for you one year can end up in the food sin bin the next. What isn’t up for debate though, is the importance of eating plenty of fruit and vegetables – at least five portions a day. Bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods should be included in your diet, and wholegrain varieties are best.
Milk and dairy foods are also good in moderation, as are meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein. And don’t forget fish: two portions of oily fish weekly are good, as are foods rich in Vitamin D. Rice pasta, bread and breakfast cereals, should also feature regularly as well as foods like beans, potatoes, lentils and oats. Curb digestive problems with fibre-rich foods and
for energy, include high iron content foods in your diet, but limit red and processed meats. Avoid too much salt as it can raise your blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease or a stroke. Women, especially, should have plenty of calcium to keep bones healthy and reduce the risk of fractures. If you’re overweight, keep in mind that you’ll inevitably become

less mobile, affecting both your health and your quality of life. If it’s a concern, talk to your GP, who might refer you to a dietician. If you already have health insurance you won’t need persuading that it’s an excellent idea. Unfortunately later in life, at the time when people tend to need it most, it can get pretty expensive. But shop around and you should be able to find a policy that suits you.
The condition of ageing is an interesting one
T
he general broad perception that ageing begins some time after 45 when the bloom of youth begins to fade and the reality of ageing becomes a very real feature that’s far from reality. Ageing actually begins somewhere in our mid 20’s when the growth portion of our existence reaches its apex and the slow steady descent into our aged state begins its unrelenting progress. All is not lost however, because the ageing process has many facets and these include everything from our genetic disposition, the misuse we subject the growing body to in all aspects, through to where we were born on the globe. In fact, seen objectively, it’s a wonder the human race has survived as long as it has. It must be something in the water. As we grow throughout life we can influence the ageing process somewhat through our activities in terms of exercise, nutritional intake, and mental stimulation to try to achieve some quality and joy in our life. The trick in all these factors, is not to become blind adherents to any specific factor , and we can all name people who have become slaves to one specific regime or other at the expense and of all others and often become isolates because of it, but to find a balance that suits each of us. This balance will be different for each person. Walking the tightrope of
ageing is an interesting exercise filled with all the skills acquired through a lifetime of study and reflection and more often than not a regret that you didn’t know then what you know now. Throughout history there has been an ongoing and continuous search for the elusive “fountain of youth”, and the path is littered with unfulfilled promises and dreams, when in actuality it’s not the quantity of life we should be pursuing but the quality, and they are not the same.

he Palms Lifestyle Village is a family run business with a growing community of over 140 residents. Now that Stage 2a is almost complete only 7 homes remain of the 33 villas to be built. It’s the perfect time to come and see what’s on offer. Established 9 years ago and with a warm welcome for anyone over 55 years, The Palms is a vibrant environment that puts a lot of life into Lifestyle. Daniel and Rochelle Skelton are joint owners with Rochelle’s parents. Everyone in the family shares a vision of quality, expertise, and passion for people. These values shine through very clearly when you visit The Palms. Construction, for example: Daniel speaks with enthusiasm about the building standards he has set for each and every property. The tradesmen working on site are part of a long established team, and everyone understands that quality is paramount. And the effort doesn’t stop when the property is sold. “We have a detailed maintenance plan to keep up existing homes
so nothing is allowed to become run down. A preventative maintenance program ensures every property stays in as good condition as the day it was completed. Every home is future proofed, with installation of fibre optics and insulation, double glazed windows and a northerly aspect to capture the sun.” A major development is commencing in October with the construction of the huge community centre that will sit at the heart of the village. The 1500sqm building will include a heated swimming pool, spa, hair salon, gym and dining room, plus a bloke’s shed, billiard room, and library, together with function rooms for the man activities in the community’s social calendar. That’s not to say there’s nothing happening today. The Resident’s Committee is strong and vibrant, organising activities such as exercise classes, pot luck dinners, games nights and bus trips. The calendar of activities allows everyone to stay social and active, plus the friendliness of the community is already making The

In the Eye of the Beholder
M
any problems affect our eyes as we grow older. Cataracts, glaucoma, macular disease and Dry eyes are all more common as we get older, and it is vital to know what to look out for. Cataract is haziness of the natural lens of the eye. Symptoms include glare, and hazy vision, and are normally slowly progressive. Treatment involves surgery to remove the hazy lens through a tiny incision and replacing the lens with an artificial lens which is usually done under local anaesthetic as a day case. Success Rates are Over 98% Glaucoma is damage to the nerve at the back of the eye caused by pressure. The commonest type of glaucoma is the most insidious – the pressure in the eye gradually creeping up and damaging the peripheral vision with no symptoms until it is very bad, by which time the damage is done. If picked up early, damage can be prevented by using eye-drops. Regular reviews by your Ophthalmologist are necessary as it is a progressive disease. Eye drops may need to be changed or if these no longer prevent nerve loss surgery may be required.
Glaucoma can be picked up by your optometrist or your ophthalmologist. www.glaucoma.org.nz Macular degeneration is the commonest cause of blindness as we age, and causes loss of central vision such as difficulty reading or seeing faces. It comes in two forms – Wet and Dry. The wet form causes bleeding at the back of the eye, and may be treated with injections into the eye if caught early. The dry form comes on more slowly, and is currently not treatable, but tends to be less severe. A healthy diet with plenty of fruit and veg or vitamin supplements are helpful as a preventive measure. If you notice sudden distortion in your vision, you should see an optometrist immediately. www.mdnz.co.nz Dry Eyes cause stinging, burning or scratchy sensation in your eyes. You may have stringy mucus in or around your eyes, red eyes, sensitivity to light. Difficulty wearing contact lenses. Difficulty with nighttime driving. Watery eyes, which is the body’s response to the irritation of dry eyes. Blurred vision or eye fatigue discomfort. Your Ophthalmologist can determine the cause of your dry eyes
and recommend the most suitable treatment. For some people, the cause of dry eyes is decreased tear production. For others it’s increased tear evaporation and an imbalance in the makeup of your tears.
Many of the diseases which affect the eye as we get older are treatable if caught early enough, and regular eye checks are money well spent, even if your glasses don’t need changing.
