ur cover story musical theatre actress Shaan Kloet (formerly Antunovich) has always aimed for the stars; her stage debut was playing Molly in the musical Annie with Whangarei Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools – she was aged eight! Since then, the 30-year-old has graced many a stage and television screen and cites her latest role of Mary Poppins, especially as it’s a personal beloved show, as one of her favourites yet. Read about how this show is progressing and when it opens on page 4. Another familiar name around town is Dave Boyd. Many will recognise his name from a business he owned for 30 years but those around in the 70s may remember a popular leather handcraft shop Dave ran on Vine St before that. At 71, he has decided to get the creative juices ﬂowing once more by resurrecting Kopper Moth and has been pretty chuffed to discover some of his original wares still ﬂoating round. Read his story on page 5. This month our regular contributor Alex Badham begins a new column sharing the home build journey she is embarking on with her husband and

Whangarei Talent ﬁlls Mary Poppins’ shoes on Auckland stage

Perfecting the art of ﬂying across the stage and saying supercalifragilisticexpialidocious backwards have been some of the challenges of playing Mary Poppins in the Auckland musical but for Whangarei’s Shaan Kloet, it’s a dream come true. Although Shaan was well-familiar with the role – she played Mary Poppins with Hamilton Operatic in 2017 – she says working with an entire new cast and creative team, this time through Amici Trust, means has meant the experience is quite different. “Although I am playing the same role, everyone brings something different to their characters which then does have an effect on how I play the role. Also, there is brand new choreography so the dances are different, because we are using different people, their skills set is different. It’s really cool to see and be a part of,” says the classically trained soprano. She says, two years on, the words to the songs came back naturally but relearning how to spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and then saying it backwards wasn’t quite so easy.

Shaan appeared on Three’s The Café in December.

The multi-award winning musical is adapted from the original ﬁlm and has delighted audiences around the world since its world premiere in 2004 with its catchy tunes including the mischievous A Spoon Full of Sugar and the riotous Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. The story is set around the turn of the century London with the dysfunctional Banks family, where patriarch George, a wealthy ﬁnancier and wife Winifred, are at their wit’s end and in high need of an au pair.

But Jane and Michael are boisterous brats and have done their best to terrorise a list of nannies into abandoning ship. A miracle arrives in Mary Poppins, the mysterious and magical nanny, who appears on the doorstep of the troubled Banks family just when her services are most required. Poppins returns decorum to the household and promptly decamps, by flying off. This allows George's own former nanny, Miss Andrew, to return and set about controlling the children with Victorian thoroughness. But Miss Andrew's techniques backfire and Poppins returns and takes charge of the Banks children with unwavering confidence. “Like the film and without giving away how it happens, expect flying, magic and mystery on stage,” says Shaan. Formerly Shaan Antunovich, she grew up in Northland where her family still reside and own the business she works for. Although currently living in Auckland, she travels to Whangarei at least once a fortnight and has plans to relocate with her husband. Since graduating from the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art with a Bachelor of Performing Arts, the 30-year-old’s career highlights include singing with Rob Guest, a soloist at Christmas in the Park at both Christchurch and Auckland, Opera in the Garden, playing Grizabella in Cats, Elphaba – the green witch in Wicked and touring with Pirates of Penzance. She has also made tv appearances on Stars in Their Eyes and NZ X Factor and most recently appeared on Three’s

The Café interviewed by Mike Puru promoting Mary Poppins. “The promotional side has been awesome,” she says. “Being on The Café was cool but I think the coolest thing has been the photos taken by LK Creative in Devonport. The whole team behind the photo shoot was awesome.” The cast has been rehearsing since early January and Shaan says everything is tracking wonderfully for the April 1 opening. “The show is in a great place, the cast and team are so talented and the technical side of the show is huge but everyone is aware of what needs to happen and it is always amazing to see how it all just falls into place once we get in the theatre. “The experience has been great – I have met some awesome people and also I am working with some people who I have known a really long time which is always epic. I am really excited - it has been a goal of mine to play a lead in Auckland, and I love the show so to be able to do it twice and twice as Mary Poppins is pretty cool.”

Mary Poppins opens at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna on April 1 and runs until April 18. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster. Note, an understudy will be ﬁlling in for Shaan on April 7, 14 and the matinee show April 11.

SKIN CANCER

MELANOMA Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It can spread rapidly and can be life-threatening if left untreated.

elanoma develops from skin cells called melanocytes. These are found in the deeper layers of the skin and produce a protein called melanin. Melanin protects the skin by absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. There are the same number of melanocytes in dark and fair skin, but the melanocytes in darker skin produce more melanin. People from ethnic groups with naturally darker skin have more protection against UV radiation and so are less likely to get skin cancers, including melanoma.

Causes of melanoma • Sun exposure Most melanomas are caused by exposure to UV radiation in sunlight. Sun exposure in childhood gives a greater risk of melanoma than sun exposure in later life. There is also a greater risk of melanoma with high doses of sun exposure occasionally (eg, during holiday and recreational activities), than with more continuous sun exposure (eg, daily work outdoors). • Sunbeds Sunbeds expose users to higher levels of

dangerous UV radiation than the sun. They increase your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers. Risk factors for developing melanoma The chance of developing melanoma increases with age. Although most melanomas are found in people aged 50 years or older, melanoma is reasonably common in younger age groups (especially people aged 25–39 years). Melanoma is rare in children. Some people are at increased risk or high risk for developing melanoma due to factors

such as their skin type or family history. Factors that are known to increase your risk or which make you at high risk for melanoma are listed below. Increased risk for melanoma • skin colour (light versus medium or dark skin) • hair colour (red or blond hair versus black hair) • skin type (burn easily, never tan) • skin damage due to sunburn. High risk for melanoma • a personal history of melanoma • a family history of melanoma in a ﬁrst-degree relative (parent, brother or sister, child). This risk is higher if more than one relative had a melanoma, if they were young at the time or if one relative had more than one melanoma • large number of moles on your skin (more than 50 moles) • atypical (dysplastic) ‘funny looking’ moles on your skin • a personal history of a previous nonmelanoma skin cancer.

What can I expect during the treatment? You and your treatment provider will wear special glasses to ensure complete safety. Your treatment provider will also wear a face mask to ensure there is nothing transferred through the air while undertaking the treatment.

arch and April are usually our best fishing months and if recent catch rates at the tail end of February are anything to go by, we could be in for a ripper of a fishing period. The Whangarei area is fishing very well. Recent trip reports I’ve heard; Mike fished just outside Parua Bay, no secret spot, rig or tide, he got his limit of good snapper in very short time and has repeated this three times. Plenty of fillets for his visitors and family. Glen and Glen also fished a little way outside Parua Bay. Experienced fisho’s, they also caught a good snapper in short time. These guys were using running rigs and mullet bait. This set-up works well when the current is running. I was walking my dogs in the evening on Onerahi’s Beach Rd recently, when a red car pulled up with Shane and Ken

inside who said hi. They had a very small boat and outboard in tow and had fished a short distance from the Onerahi boat ramp. They also had a very impressive snapper catch thanks for the snapper guys, very fresh and very tasty! A workmate, Jed, went out with his father in law Stu, they softbaited while drifting with a sea anchor out and were fishing 30 metres deep off Ruakaka. The fishing was very good, with ‘nuclear chicken’ soft baits working particularly well. They tried many different softbaits and the fish weren’t fussy but weren’t interested in small black baits. These guys also got their limit with some very good-sized fish caught. I went out recently with Glen Baker and we targeted those succulent terakihi. Terakihi fish are best either side of tide change, either top or bottom of the tide and come on the bite as the current slackens. We put in a lot of effort - gear, bait, sea conditions, lunar fishing calendar, bite times - and we had a very good

The Flea Lifecycle There are around 2000 different flea species in the world but the Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the most common flea we see on both dogs and cats.

The flea life cycle has two phases; the on-host parasitic phase of the adults and the off-host/ environmental stage of the eggs, larvae and pupae - this makes them tricky to eradicate! The time it takes fleas to reproduce is hugely variable – when all the temperature and humidity are optimal, new fleas can be created within 12 days, but when temperatures and humidity are too high or low, it can take six months to occur.

Why is the flea life cycle important? Well, we need to think of the whole flea population as the problem, not just the visible fleas on your pet. For every flea you see on your pet there are probably many more but they are good at hiding in their hair! Seeing five fleas on your pet also means that somewhere in your pet’s environment there are about 100 more lifecycle stages undergoing development to become new fleas. The adult fleas we see are actually just the tip of the flea iceberg!

Here’s five Golden Rules to help keep your pet flea free: 1. Protect ALL your pets against fleas. Cats and dogs share the same fleas so don’t leave any pets untreated because you ‘think’ your cat doesn’t get fleas – he does – he’s just better at hiding them than your dog! 2. Protect your pets with a trusted flea treatment ALL year round Don’t leave pets unprotected over winter. In the New Zealand climate fleas really are a year-round problem. Preventing an infestation is easier than treating one. On average New Zealanders are only using eight weeks of flea treatment on their cats and 11 weeks of flea treatments on their dogs per year. This is simply not enough to

protect them and prevent flea infestations in your home. It takes very low temperatures to kill fleas off, about -1°C for five days, so they can survive in the environment and in our houses all year round in most parts of New Zealand. 3. Check you’re using the right product correctly See your vet or pet specialty store as they supply only trusted flea products. Make sure you read all the instructions inside the packet before using, so that you apply the product correctly, and get the right pack size for your pet’s accurate and recent weight - don’t just guess their weight.

4. Use a dual action pet treatment Use a pet flea treatment that kills BOTH adult fleas AND targets another lifecycle stage too. Advantage, Advocate and Seresto all kill adult fleas on your pet and larval flea stages in the pet’s surroundings. The active ingredient is shed in pet’s dander and hair around their sleeping areas and so larvae are exposed this way. 5. Exercise your patience! If you already have a flea infestation it may take 2-4 months to control flea populations. Fleas that are seen during this time are not adults that have survived previous treatments, but are new fleas still emerging from their cocoons. They will be killed soon after they jump onto their host… provided the host has correctly applied treatment on them. Remember it’s always better to prevent an infestation than tackle one!

Local landscape photographer Alan Squires has had a very industrious start to 2020 with the launch of his ﬁrst book titled Whangarei and a solo exhibition of large scale photographic works at MD Gallery.

reating and self publishing a book is a huge achievement in itself, but Squires went that little bit extra to ensure the publication was home grown, working closely with local business Calders Design & Print Ltd to ensure both the printing and hand binding of the book happened right here in Whangarei, and it worked wonderfully. The one hundred page, hard backed publication features an outstanding selection of both colour and black & white images of rural and coastal scenes from Langs to Whangaruru. Whangarei is a celebration of our region through his eyes and the lens of his trusty camera. It's a unique photographic journey that also acts as a historical visual document of our growing region. Born in Auckland in the 70s, self taught photographer Squires has travelled extensively, living overseas for some fifteen years. “I've always had a camera. I still have my first photo, taken as a six year old, of the old camp bus parked up in the Hunua Ranges in Auckland. There's a chap just walking out of shot and he’s wearing a tremendous pair of flares! My dad loved photography, he would present slide shows to us kids of his travels overseas and we were enraptured by it all. But I never really got hooked completely, probably because dark rooms and chemicals did not particularly appeal to me.

But something deﬁnitely awoke in me with the advent and immediateness of digital photography.” He settled in Whangarei eight years ago and its safe to say he's smitten with the region. His personal connection to the region is evident in his work. ”That view as you come up over the Brynderwyns - home” he says, gets him every time. Something many of us can relate to. It was a natural choice to use the image home, for which Squires has become quite well known, as the feature shot for the cover of his book. So what was the impetus to create a book? “The maritime setting of Whangarei beguiles with an ever changing bustling harbour and a varied-dramatic coastline with glorious beaches. I’ve spent many a day on the sand at the height of summer and not seen a soul, and

The Whangarei Sculpture Symposium (WSSVI) is back for a sixth season from March 9-19 2020; and this year the new locale is the Hihiaua Cultural Centre.

ere the sculptors provide a live exhibition for the viewing pleasure of the general public, art lovers and art collectors; as they work away on blocks of limestone, hard stone and/ or wood to transform them to art-pieces in front of our eyes. The WSSVI theme is ‘Regeneration – renew, restore and reclaim’ focusing on the natural environment in Northland and the preservation of our natural resources: water, land, air and coast. As these values align with the Department of Conservation, they have generously come onboard as a sponsor this year.

We have a great line-up of Northland local sculptors: David Taylor, Miriam von Mulert, Tracey Willms Deane, Els van Drunen, Peter Schouten, Trisha Fisk, Brian Mitchell (sponsored by Te Wananga O Aotearoa), Justin Murﬁtt, Dion Jakich and Paul Harris. Out-oftown sculptors (with some ﬁrst time attendees and some returns) include Rex O'Brien, Lawrence Makoare, Jocelyn Pratt, Paul Olson, and Todd Sheridan. Hosting the event at the Hihiaua Cultural Centre brings new opportunities to expand, such as the edition of a side exhibition from March 9-28, displaying artworks by current and past participants. WSSVI is a free public event and the site is open to the public daily from 9am - 5pm, where you will be greeted by one of the friendly Lions Whangarei volunteers. Saturday March 14, 10am - 2pm has a family/whanau focus, with many interactive activities provided by Whangarei Libraries and Creative Northland. WSSVI culminates in a Live Auction on March 19, 2020, sponsored by Ray White Realty Ltd, where the completed sculptures will be auctioned to the public and award winners announced for the Whangarei District Council Supreme Award, Whangarei District Council Parks Award, Resene Award and the People’s Choice Award. Making a small space

There’s no need to resort to wand waving when attempting to make a small space look bigger, nor is there a need to push out walls to create a room with a bigger footprint. There are various tricks and tips you can take on board to accomplish this aim. Paint colour is certainly one of the easiest and most cost-effective solutions for expanding your space visually, making it appear to be larger than it really is. However, it is important to recognise that light colours behave differently than dark colours, just as warm colours behave differently to cool colours. In the same vein, different colour choices will do different things for ceilings, walls and ﬂoors as all these factors can completely transform and open up a small space – almost like magic, but without the wand. Generally speaking – and, yes, there are certainly exceptions – dark colours tend to make a room look smaller. This is because some dark colours visually advance, making the walls seem closer than they actually are. For the safest solution to make a small room appear bigger, try painting it a light paint colour that has cool undertones. Resene Colour Expert Carolyn Atkinson recommends Resene Black White, Resene Quarter White Pointer, Resene Half Rice Cake and Resene Wan White as popular options but encourages looking to colours beyond basic whites. Colours like blues or blue/greens

are some of the best choices, she says – particularly paler to mid-toned varieties. These hues work especially well because of the way they recede from your vision, making spaces appear further away and therefore much bigger. Look to Resene Remember Me, Resene Slipstream, Resene Half Dusted Blue, Resene Breathless, Resene Breeze or Resene Eskimo for some of the most approachable options. Adding stripes is another trick suggested by Mount Maunganui painter John Murphy. He recommends adding horizontal stripes on your walls to help visually expand your space. “Pick one - maybe two walls – to give the striped look and they’ll look elongated. Use contrasting colours to create the illusion of depth,” he says.

Diaries of a new home build Hello and welcome to our new column which follows along with us as we navigate our ﬁrst new home build! BY ALEX BADHAM

e are equal parts nervous and excited about this new venture to build a modern home for our young family which allows us to live the slow intentional lifestyle we moved back to Whangarei for. If you are interested in the building process or looking at building your own home, we would love you to follow along.

THE LAND AND INITIAL DESIGN STAGES We began looking for a block of land in 2019 at the same time as attending open homes every weekend. We were open to the idea of buying an existing place or building but ultimately the decision was made by the lack of properties available that met all of our criteria. We (literally) stumbled across the section on an evening walk and saw a slightly dishevelled ‘For Sale’ sign on the section with a phone number. Three months later and we are now in the initial design stages for our first home build. As we had been looking for properties which suited us and our young family, we had a few non-negotiable criteria which the design had to meet. We spoke at length about how our home had to accommodate for our lifestyles; We love to entertain friends and family and wanted a low maintenance house which would allow us to enjoy getting out and about over the weekends. We didn’t want our home to have unused space, so we have tried to incorporate as many clever storage solutions into a relatively small footprint as possible. The process so far has been relatively stress-free, possibly due to having a flat section to work with and a strong aesthetic for the overall form of the house. A small and efficient footprint as well as prioritising warmth and ventilation throughout the home have helped us to work as a group to get the initial design work started. We are about a week away from having our plans finalised and will be sharing ideas and designs as they come in! In the meantime, you will find us on Pinterest scrolling through endless ideas. What is an ‘as is, where is’ property and what should I be wary of? More and more New Zealand homes are being sold ‘as is, where is’ after the Canterbury and Kaikōura earthquakes.

hese properties are often listed at a lower price and can be tempting for ﬁrst-home buyers with DIY dreams. We take a look at the risks you may face as a buyer and the steps you can take to protect yourself.

What does ‘as is, where is’ mean? Marketing a property ‘as is, where is’ can be a way to alert potential buyers to the current state of the property. ‘As is, where is’ properties may have: • suffered substantial damage — commonly in a high natural disaster area or fires — and been written off by the insurers • been approved for repair — but no repairs have been carried out • not had insurance at the time of a natural event • weathertightness issues • unconsented alterations. Real Estate Authority (REA) chief executive, Kevin Lampen-Smith says: “While ‘as is, where is’ properties in New Zealand have generally suffered damage through natural events, they can also be listed ‘as is, where is’ because of owner neglect, an estate sale, or a mortgagee sale.” What could this mean for you as a buyer? If you’re interested in buying an ‘as is, where is’ property, the most important things you can do are take extra care with your due diligence and make sure that you contact insurers to establish whether you can insure the property before making an offer. Before signing a sale and purchase agreement, seek independent legal advice and clarification from your insurance provider. Your bank or lender will want proof that you have arranged property insurance before settlement, even if you have conditional preapproval with your finances.

These properties have damage so severe that insurers consider the cost of repairing the property to be uneconomical. The original homeowners will usually receive a cash settlement to put towards the cost of demolition and building a new house. If you are considering buying an ‘as is, where is’ property that has been written off, you need to think about whether you are prepared to buy a property that cannot be insured. It’s wise to get a geotechnical report done to find out whether rebuilding a new house on the land is possible. It’s a good idea to keep in mind that it may be difficult to insure a replacement house on the same piece of land, if there has been no insurance for a length of time. Talking to insurance companies or an independent insurance broker will give you an idea of your options. Been approved for repair, but no repairs have been carried out This means that the insurers have decided that the property can be repaired. It’s likely that a cash payment was made to the owner to settle the insurance claim, but they have not used it to make the repairs. Building costs often increase over time, so you’ll want to make sure that you fully understand the cost of repair when making an offer on an ‘as is, where is’ property. Engaging experts is essential. Paying that bit extra to get a qualified building inspection and/ or engineering report done will give you a clear picture of the property — remember that this is a visual inspection and the building inspector or engineer will not be able to cut holes in walls or carry out other invasive testing. No insurance at the time of the natural event The cost of repairing this type of property will fall on the owner. This may be reflected in the sale price.

BUYING

It’s sensible to ask the real estate agent for any proof of repair, so that you can understand what work may have been carried out. It would also be wise to work with an independent insurance broker to explore the best insurance options for you. Your ﬁrst port of call may be contacting your current insurance company. Having an existing relationship with an insurer means that you have already been assessed as a good risk.

You can ask for a review of an EQC cash settlement if the original settlement did not meet the reasonable costs of repairs.

Insuring an ‘as is, where is’ property Ask the real estate agent who the property is insured with and whether any claims for damage have been made with EQC and the private insurer. You should also ask the real estate agent if there are any claim numbers available. And, ask the real estate agent, EQC and the private insurer lots of questions to get a full picture of what ‘as is, where is’ actually means for this property. This will let you know if any insurance claims exist. Make sure that as the buyer any EQC or private insurance claims are assigned to you. Where the property has been sold by mortgagee sale, it is unlikely the mortgagee will have insurance on the property before settlement. You may wish to talk to an insurance broker about options for insuring the property before settlement. “Taking extra care to do your homework is especially important with ‘as is, where is’ properties. Not spending the time and money to get a full picture of the property you are purchasing can be very expensive and stressful,” Lampen-Smith says.

Cost of repairs While the cost of an ‘as is, where is’ property is often lower to factor in the repairs needed, you have no buffer if something goes wrong. It is always wise to set aside money to cover extra due diligence and to include a decent contingency amount in your repair budget. You can request a review of an EQC cash settlement if the original settlement was not enough to cover the reasonable costs of EQC’s repair strategy.

Settling a deed of assignment Transferring an insurance claim to a new buyer is called ‘assignment’. A Deed of Assignment is the most common document, and your lawyer or conveyancer can help with this. Transferring the claim may allow you to take over the rights to the claim (ie: the right to any insurance payout). What if damage has been missed or there’s been a failed repair? Talk to your lawyer or conveyancer if you discover that damage to the property is missing from the insurance claim, or if there’s been a failed repair. They will be able to help you with a request to review the original claims.

SELLING

What if the property had a private insurance claim? With private insurance cover, a new owner may not be entitled to the same beneﬁts as the previous owner. This is because the policy is held by the individual, not the property.

Some things to think about before buying an ‘as is, where is’ property • Has a building inspection or engineer’s report been carried out? • Look especially at high-risk areas: • Chimneys, foundations and retaining walls • Houses on slopes • Properties with multiple types of foundations • Houses with irregular design shapes or split levels • Unreinforced concrete block walls • Leaking or cracking • What land zone is the property in? TC1, TC2, TC3, etc • Are there any other potential natural hazards, eg coastal? • Can you insure the house before settlement? • Have you sought legal advice? • How can you reduce the risk of further damage? “It’s important to think through the reasons why you want to purchase an ‘as is, where is’ property. Make sure you set aside time and money to do your due diligence and set up a strong support team to help you weigh up whether this is a good option for you,” says Lampen-Smith.

This month at home we have been sorting through our crockery, cutlery and dinnerware. Getting rid and donating of the pieces that we don’t use and keeping pieces we enjoy using daily. Nothing is kept for ‘special occasions’ and everything is very well-loved.
