And second time around is much more harmonious with the knowledge they have both gained along their individual and mutual journeys. I think her insightful words can apply to anyone’s situation. When Geoff and Chris bumped into each other on the street in Portsmouth, it was one of those ‘eyes across a smoky bar’ moments. Over a decade later, and after navigating many obstacles along the way, they married in an intimate ceremony in Northland.

The wedding party included two groomsmaids (local girlfriends), two best ladies (their younger sisters), two ring boys (Geoff’s grandchildren) and two witnesses (Geoff and Chris’ older brothers). The wedding was in three parts; The main non-religious ceremony held under a large marquee attended by 140 guests in the late morning, the wedding meal in the courtyard garden, which was catered by outside caterers using the couple’s kitchen and attended by 52 guests. Finally, all guests returned for a New Year’s Eve party back in

Everyone now knows about Geoff’s relationship and reacted positively. “I have ﬁve grandchildren and, yes, the distance between us does tug at the heart strings but, on balance, life in New Zealand is such that a return to UK is not anticipated.” Geoff says that, while it is believed his sons aren’t ‘madly happy’ about the situation, they do recognise that their dad is happy, cared for and enjoying his life so are prepared to accept the status quo.

Hindsight, experience & wisdom create harmony second time around

With four marriages each, including two to each other, and tens of thousands of kilometres of ocean’s divide, it’s been quite the journey for Alex and Richard, who finally reunited with a ceremony in Whangarei this year. And this time round, their relationship is a lot more harmonious with the benefit of hindsight, experience and wisdom. “It was a wonderful time (the first marriage to each other) but it was also quite fraught because I don’t think we had the maturity to deal with some of life’s problems,” reflects Alex, 64. “I think you learn some things are very important in a relationship and it’s about not being so self-centred. Rather than getting irritated with each other, perhaps actually hear each other more and be a bit more loving and kind to each other.” Alex and Richard, both from the UK, were divorced with kids when they met in their late 20s. Alex had taken part in a ‘life changing’ university course that Richard was also on and the participants subsequently formed a social group, which partook in annual family camps. Alex and Richard met on this camp and noticed a spark. Alex, who had a son and Richard, two daughters, married in a registry office and ten years of marriage ensued. However, after various life struggles typical of that stage in life, such as working full-time jobs, kids, a large mortgage, and not having the support to work on their issues, they separated. “Friends and family were surprised,” says Alex, a social worker. “As, to some people, we had been seen as the ‘perfect’ couple. One friend commented that we restored his faith in relationships when he saw us together. However, pressure and stress and a lack of knowledge about how to ‘fight for a relationship’, won the battle.” They married other people and those marriages lasted over 20 years, producing another two children each. But both Alex and Richard agree, in amongst the happy times and family richness, were difficulties.

“We’d both be quick to say we’d never wish those times not to have been, not when there are four beloved adults that came from those relationships. But you feel a sense of failure. There was always some strength in our marriage and I missed his kindness and gentleness.” During their long time apart, they had no contact and, in 1991, Alex moved to New Zealand, where she had lived as a teen and fell in love with the country. It was after her separation, during a visit to England in 2008, Alex decided to attend one of the camps and was reacquainted with Richard and the same friends from the beginning. “I had got in touch with him ﬁrst to check if he was ok with me being there, because he may have felt uncomfortable,” says Alex. “We caught up there and both got on really well just as friends. Our friendship started from there.” Through this friendship, they rediscovered the mutual kindness and support they had enjoyed with each other in their previous time together. Years later, Richard’s marriage had ended and, with a growing awareness that his love for Alex was still real, he moved to New Zealand

where they eventually decided to give their relationship another go. Alex and Richard, now 67 and retired, moved north to Whangarei and began a new chapter in their lives when they married in February this year in a ceremony that grew from a ‘cup of champagne in a tea cup with a slice of cake’, to a full marquee at Alex’s oldest son’s small business in Marua for over 100 guests. “It’s embarrassing having your fourth wedding,” confesses Alex. “We were aware that four marriages sounds a little excessive – almost ‘ﬂighty’ – and you don’t want to make a big deal of it. But many of our friends and family were very pleased about us being back together – some think that we should never have parted – and we wanted to make it more of a celebratory occasion. “Knowing that life is sometimes complicated and disappointing, it is none-the-less a testament to the love and kindness that we have for each other, our seven children and friends and family. It was about every one that was there, the contribution of their very presence and their laughter. There was so much goodwill, so much kindness, it was just a wonderful day.”

The wedding played out in front of a backdrop of Totaras, tropical rain, pasture and pigs. And, like most weddings, it wasn’t without its unexpected events. “At one point, the rain hurtled down, the pig on the spit caught fire, due to the rain knocking out the motor, and then the kids’ tent blew away and wasn’t seen for days. Relatives helped to stop the marque collapsing in the torrential rain by using broomsticks to hold the roof up whilst cascades of water narrowly missing the chairs and dressed top table. The walk-in chiller, where all the food was being stored, almost flooded. It was a contrast to the first wedding all those years ago in a dingy registry office with a meal for a select few in a very smart restaurant. “Yet, somehow the life and the hope and the love at this wedding was like a rich warm soup on a cold day.” Life today is ‘hugely different’ to the first time round as a couple, says Alex. “We’ve learnt stuff but we’re still learning. I think we were looking for the answers in the other person when we have to be our own answers and, if you can share that life with someone, that’s great. “I think when you’re older, you are more accepting. You don’t fight the small battles and have more gratitude for what you do have, rather than what you haven’t got. Certainly, Richard and I are full of gratitude for each other. We all want to come home to somebody but perhaps it works best when we learn to come home to ourselves first. “Our story could be seen as one of failures and disappointments, or you could look through the lens of love, second chances and forgiveness, knowing that nothing in our lives is lost or wasted. The fabric of our lives is sometimes richer for twists and turns.” Adding a humorous take also helps. “As Richard said: ‘They used to save the smaller tier of the wedding cake for the christening, I suppose we could save ours for our funeral’. “Some things just seem funnier when you’re older.”

1. Get some Essential Fatty Acids Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s), in particular omega 3, are the building blocks of ALL cell membranes, skin cells included. Healthy, permeable cell membranes increase absorption of vitamins and minerals, hold in water and nutrients. The fatty acids in skin cell membranes also play a huge role in forming the skin’s natural protective barrier. 2. Avoid cleansers containing surfactants Common surfactants used in facial cleansers are sulphated detergents such as sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate. These have foaming properties which strip the skin’s natural oil leaving it feeling tight and gives a perception of a deep cleanse.

SKIN PREPARATION FOR THE BIG DAY

he warmer months of January, February, and March are probably the most popular months for weddings, so most couples will be starting to prepare for their big day now. Very often the skin is not given a thought until much closer to the date when you’re trialling makeup artists. And then, it’s all about coverage.

In some ways, they are worse than surfactants in cleansers because in moisturisers and foundation, they sit on the skin’s surface all the time and continuously strip and damage the skin’s protective barrier. Common emulsifiers are polysorbate, stearate, steareth, cetearyl and ceteareth. hese are statements I hear a lot during the start of a coaching journey. People beating themselves up because what they expected to happen in certain areas of their lives didn’t, or they keep pushing for particular outcomes time and time again and wind up feeling frustrated because the results don’t change. What I’ve discovered in coaching people, is they feel this way because their lives aren’t matching the stories they are telling themselves, and it’s this misalignment that is causing them pain and suffering. We all have stories that we tell ourselves, and it is within these stories that we ﬁnd meaning in how we should look, how we should behave, our relationships, our jobs, our successes, and our life milestones. Our stories are also what sets us up for how we feel, the actions we take, and ultimately what we believe we can achieve with our lives. However, what happens when these stories don’t serve us, or have become outdated? The short answer is - they limit us. They keep us feeling stuck and they rob us of the ability to see the bigger picture of who we truly are and what we want for our lives. So, when you’re experiencing difﬁculties, and coming up against resistance in your life, the answer isn’t to keep trying a different action hoping to get a different result, the answer is to step back and ask: ‘What story am I telling myself right now, and how might this be getting in the way of me experiencing what I truly want?’

“I had got to the stage where I was very unwell. I was barely functioning as a human being. I could see and hear people that no one else could but they looked real to me. The voices in my head were telling me to do things I would not normally do and I had blown it with my family and friends.

AN INSPIRING STORY ABOUT SASHA TOIA Mental health problems come in all the colours of the rainbow and the right treatment can be just as difﬁcult to pin down. For Sasha Toia, of Whangarei, it took 12 years and nearly cost her life before she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. “In my 20s I had what most people would say was a highly successful life, working in the media where I had dreams of being a screenwriter, living overseas with my husband, with a beautiful house and lifestyle. I had everything but felt I had nothing and I didn’t know why.’’ She returned to New Zealand, but her life continued to spiral out of control until she found herself unable to hold down a job and involved in crime. She was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and the medication did not help at all.

“I lost everything: My husband, my home, the respect of my family and the community. It was a traumatic and frightening time. I needed help.’’ She spent several weeks in Whangarei Hospital where she ﬁnally received the correct diagnosis and medication and was referred to Arataki Ministries where she lived at Arataki House for a year. The service helps residents work through all of their life issues and provides support with living a healthy lifestyle. “They saved my life in every way. They made me believe in myself again, that I had lots to contribute to society. They made me feel cherished.” Sasha continues to take medication to keep her schizophrenia under control and leads a disciplined life where she walks for an hour every day, is careful with her diet, makes sure she has plenty of sleep and does not overload her worklife. Learning to say no is an important part of self-discipline, she says.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK SEPTEMBER 23-29 To celebrate the group of Whangarei based community organisations will be setting up stations at the Cameron St Mall. Wellbeing coaches will be available to chat to you on how you and your family can stay healthy and positive.

She now works at Arataki Ministries as a Community Support Worker and is a Consumer Networker for Te Taitokerau Tangata Whai Ora Network (TTTWON) to strengthen links to community support for individuals and families affected by mental illness and addiction.

She is also part of the Northland District Health Board’s advisory panel on mental health issues. “I love my job and helping people find their way back to a healthy and productive life. I am passionate about my work and feel blessed to have every one of my colleagues in my life.’’ She says Arataki Ministries CEO Louis Tousain has been instrumental in helping her to fulfil her potential. Sasha’s life experience proves invaluable to helping her clients, and she doesn’t tolerate half-hearted efforts. “Treating mental health issues is not about popping some pills to fix everything instantly. “It really doesn’t work like that. They have to be prepared to work on every aspect of their life, emotionally, spiritually, physically and socially. They have to put the work in and there’s a lot of pain with that. “If they want to be free of the demons, they have to want it bad.’’ Sasha is now reaping the rewards of her own hard work, with a happy and fulfilling life, a job she loves, overseas trips and the reignition of her dreams to be a screenwriter. “I finally have a life where I am content and I feel really blessed. The mind is such a powerful thing: If you believe you can’t then you never will, but if you believe you can then you will,’’ she says. “And I am pretty determined.”

The greatest project you will ever work on is… There is no substitute greater in significance than the person staring back at you when you look in the mirror. Sure, if you are a parent, your children are also a great life project but, for the remainder of your life, whether or not you have children, YOU will remain to be your greatest project. Nothing and no one can fill your shoes. No one can fulfill those dreams you have. No one can prevent you or push you enough into doing something you know you need to do, or are meant to do, unless YOU finally decide to do it. Mostly everything you have ever wanted or accomplished will likely have been challenging to some degree. Some things will have given you instant gratification while others took much longer to achieve. Sometimes you may have struggled and sacrificed time, money, effort, sweat, blood and

tears for these things, but accomplishing them brought you much satisfaction. Why? Because no one ever gave them to you for free. You hustled and worked hard for them all. When you work hard to earn something it makes it that much more satisfying. At the end of the day, the person you aspire to become, the life you dream of having, is like a big puzzle kinda project. Taking time out to work on yourself is an extremely important part of this puzzle. So many people don’t give themselves permission to do this, because they might feel guilty, or think there’s not enough time in their schedules to do so. I’m here to tell you that you should NOT feel guilty and that it IS possible to work a little ‘YOU’ time into your schedule. Our bodies are the only place we have to live in this lifetime. INTRAOCULAR LENS (IOL) OPTIONS The lens in our eye is responsible for 25-30 percent of the eyes focusing power. The natural lens is removed when patients have cataracts, injury to lens, or wish to be glasses-free. Once the natural lens in the eye has been removed, the eye loses its ability to focus light and images clearly onto the retina. Before the development of artificial lenses, hard contact lenses or very thick eyeglasses were the only options for correcting vision after cataract surgery. Artificial intraocular (within the eye) lenses were developed in the early part of the 20th century. Dr. Harold Ridley implanted the first artificial lens in 1949 in London. He noticed that Perspex was inert in the eye, after seeing RAF (Royal air Force) pilots of World War II with pieces of shattered canopies in their eyes. Since the 1970s, cataract surgery techniques and artificial lenses have continued to evolve and develop. Artificial lenses are made of inert (or non-reactive) materials, such as PMMA, silicone, and acrylic. Just like natural lenses, artificial lenses have refractive power, or the ability to bend light, which helps to focus light rays and images on the retina. Because of this refractive power, it is now possible to correct astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness with artificial lenses. A consultation with an Ophthalmologist will guide the patient as to what choices are suitable. Taking into consideration eye health, vision and lifestyle. Traditionally with cataract surgery, the lens is removed and replaced with a monofocal lens that corrects the patients’ vision for distance focus (most will need glasses for reading). Occasionally a patient will request to be made nearsighted (usually have a job that requires close-up work) and have glasses for distance. The axial length and the corneal curvature are essential measurements to predict the correct lens power of an intraocular lens. This measurement is called a biometry and needs to be done prior to surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions about Premium Intraocular Lens Implants (IOL’s) 1. How are Multi or Trifocal IOLs different from the single focus IOLs? Single focus IOLs are ﬁxed-focus lens implants that are designed to provide good distance vision. The new lens design creates multiple focal points, so patients can see well at varied distances. Multifocal and Extended Depth IOL’s offer a greater independence from glasses after cataract or clear lens extraction surgery. 2. Could I be a candidate for a Multi or Tri focal lens? If you have been diagnosed with cataracts and/or presbyopia you can be eligible. However, eyes must be healthy and not afﬂicted with severe diabetic retinopathy, uncontrolled glaucoma, or advanced macular degeneration. 3. What if I’ve already had RK, LASIK or another eye surgery? Can I get these lenses? Yes, you may still be a candidate. You will require additional testing such as corneal topography and corneal pachymetry to assist in proper lens calculation. 4. After receiving one of these Multi or Tri focal lOL, will I still need glasses at times?

Most patients can conduct much of their daily activities without glasses, but results do vary. Circumstances where glasses were sometimes needed included night driving, reading very ﬁne print, and poor light or contrast of print.

7. Do Multi or Trifocal IOLs cost more than standard lenses? Yes Multi or trifocal lenses do cost more than standard lenses. The cost will depend on the lens suitable for you (multifocal, trifocal lenses, and/or a Toric lens (for astigmatism).

5. Is there an adjustment period or side effects after surgery? It can take one to 12 weeks for the brain to learn to ‘see’ up close and distance with the new lens. Some people report halos or glare around lights. For most, this issue diminishes over time. However, for some, it never completely goes away. More people report that the ability to see near and far greatly outweighs any visual side effects associated with these IOLs.

8. How do I know if I am a candidate? Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for these new IOLs. These questions with a YES or a NO answer will provide some indication of whether you might be a candidate for premium lenses. If you have said yes to all the boxes above, then you may be a candidate.

Will I require additional eye surgeries after a Multi or Tri focal lOL While the goal is to treat your nearsightedness, farsightedness, loss of focusing power, and cataract all at once, it is possible that additional procedures, such as LASIK, may be required to reduce astigmatism, ﬁne-tune your vision, and meet your expectations. Consult with your doctor and surgeon to make sure you understand the issues associated with these lenses and what additional procedures might be indicated to ensure your ultimate satisfaction.

A vivid, thoughtprovoking mural to now grace a formerly decrepit wall in downtown Whangarei has been taking passers-by on a mesmerizing visual poetic journey.

rtist Olivia Garelja has been working on the project, commissioned by the Northland Regional Council (NRC) outside their Water St premises, for the last six weeks and, against the odds during the middle of winter, completed it last week. “Passers-by have been so supportive and open to discuss the mural out of interest from the beginning, what it was developing into and to ﬁnd out more about the process… to get it to the stage it is now,” comments Oliva. “It has become, from my perspective, an educational piece that tells a powerful story at a time where, as a nation, we are starting to look at preservation and full circle outcomes.” After moving from Auckland, Olivia, 30, through a connection at Creative Northland, was provided with the opportunity to submit a mural concept for selection. “I feel humbled to have been selected to be able to give meaning to this wall that speaks a larger message about our surroundings and realistic goals to be reminded of for years to come. A message that is so pertinent: ‘If the sea is well, If the land is well, the people will thrive’.” Public favourites have included the bee on manuka, Kiwi, Red-band gumboots, ﬂying tui and the ocean scene. The original concepts considered existing photographs that NRC own that Olivia was able to knit together and propose a blended overall scene. The wall itself, created several challenges; being in a neglected state, jutting out in places and south-facing. “This posed a new way of thinking about murals and ways around making it work and be long-lasting. Luckily my (Matarau-based) home studio is a large shed as it allowed me to paint on separate panels without the constraints of weather and at any time, so many nights I was singing and painting myself through the evening,” says Olivia.

NEGLECTED TOWN WALL COMES TO LIFE She says the project has taken around 120 hours within six weeks from sign-off to completion, around her full-time work as a sign writer. “It’s been a bit crazy-busy, but in the best way possible. I have been able to reign in support from some beautiful people around me.” A self-confessed perfectionist when it comes to art, Olivia has always been fascinated with artistic exploration and recalls, from the age of four, ‘destroying myself emotionally if I was to go over the black outline’ of a colouring book. Aged eight, Olivia attained ﬁrst place for painting her rendition of the newly-published book Nickety Nacketty Noo Noo Noo by Joy Cowley and Tracey Moroney. She achieved a scholarship to attend AUT and do Graphic Design, where she also studied photography, later photographing many large events around Auckland before embarking on a career in IT as a back-up to her creative side.

“I feel humbled to have been selected to be able to give meaning to this wall that speaks a larger message about our surroundings and realistic goals to be reminded of for years to come.“ “The last 10 years have actually made me further realise my passion and creative skill that I shouldn’t ignore. Olivia says, she ‘truly loves it here’ in the ‘amazing creative community of Whangarei’ and is able to regain at least two hours of her life per day by not sitting in traffic. With the completion of the NRC project, Olivia will now focus on some exciting murals she is painting from her studio, for Rainbow’s End, where she formerly worked as their full-time mural artist. She also has plans for a solo exhibition, along with several smaller works, including a mural for a Hospice shop in Auckland. “This (NRC) work has been quite different to my other work and I was able to develop a visual poetic narrative across the wall incorporating detail of thought into cultural importance and visual significance. It has been a pleasure to work with NRC to get greater understanding of outcomes that are key and significant to their work throughout the region. It evolved to include multiple focus points and stories that one can take from it.” While there are always hours that can be spent perfecting scenes, Olivia says it’s also important knowing when to put down the brush and celebrate the achievement and seeing viewers’ reactions reflect how uplifting the work is for her as an artist. Viewers’ reactions have included parents with their kids figuring out geographical locations on the Northland map and Olivia says it has been great to see people off their devices, talking and pointing to the parts of the painting while they wait for their Domino’s Pizza from nearby or taking time out from the markets. “Many are amazed at the level of detail and movement on the wall. Some have said they find areas very mesmerizing, which was humbling to hear, as it just showed the various level of details were being noticed and they were able to speak more to viewers taking them on a visual poetic journey.”

1940 Packard Club Coupe

very smart looking car in our New Packard Shed is our dark green 1940 Packard Club Coupe. This car was imported by Graeme Craw from the USA and therefore is one of our left-hand drive vehicles. By 1940 the Packard Motor Corporation completed a four-year expansion program making the Packard manufacturing complex the biggest in America; a 3.5 million square foot compound sprawling across 35 acres. This expansion allowed the company to step into a new market and produce a range of midpriced cars. These medium-priced cars helped bolster Packard’s recovery from the lower volume sales of the Depression.

The new line of 1940 cars were designated as the 110, the 120, the 160 and the 180 and were available in the following body styles: a business coupe, a club coupe with two auxiliary rear seats that could be folded away, a touring sedan, a club sedan, a convertible coupe or a convertible sedan. These vehicles were built with all steel bodies. These cars were rated high in the fun category as they were great to drive, solid, powerful and reliable. The design of the business coupe and the club coupe took on a sportier look than the more sedate styling of the sedans. The 110 was ﬁtted with a six cylinder, 245 cu.in, 100 hp engine but the 120 was powered by Packard’s standard

If you are using a colour off the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection on your walls, use a paler version of it on the ceiling, and not a standard white. 2. Leaving skimpy skirting in natural wood or painting them an accent colour. If you have a small skirting (so not a decorative villa or bungalow-style skirting) paint it the same colour as the wall, but in a higher gloss level. It will appear slightly paler as the gloss reﬂects more light, but it won’t draw attention to itself.

TIPS TO REDUCE SNORING Does your partner keep you awake at night? Here are ﬁve top tips to reduce snoring. Snoring can cause broken sleep and tension between couples, often resulting in one person sleeping in a separate room due to the noise.

Avoid alcohol Drinking alcohol makes snoring worse as it relaxes your airway muscles even more than usual. The more you drink, the worse your snoring may be. 4. Stop smoking

We all know smoking is bad for your health in general, but it’s also bad for snoring. It damages your heart, lungs and causes nasal congestion, which increases snoring. 5. Replace your pillows Allergens such as dust mites and pollen can irritate your airways and make your snoring worse. Make sure you buy new pillows every six months (dust mites live in pillows) and keep

Real Estate Authority (REA) research has found that more than half of all first home buyers – even the ones who successfully buy a property – find the process stressful and overwhelming. “We know it’s hard for people when they’re trying to buy their first home – it’s a complex legal process and a huge financial deal,” says REA chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith. “We want to empower them to feel more confident and in control when they’re making such a big decision.” 1. SORT OUT YOUR FINANCES You’ll already know that saving is a big part of getting ready to buy, but do you know what else you need to do? Getting financial advice from a qualified advisor could be a useful step in your planning. Owning a property means you’re responsible for all the maintenance and repairs – and for paying rates and insurance. Owning an apartment may also mean you need to pay

These costs can be a bit of a shock to the system if you’ve rented for a long time. “It’s also a good idea to get conditional pre-approved finance arranged so you can move quickly when you spot a property you really like,” Lampen-Smith says. “Having conditional pre-approval lets you know the price range you can buy in and it shows agents and sellers that you’re a serious buyer. PLANTING UP A SEPTIC SYSTEM

– New Builds Or Reviving An Old System BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD

he two main reasons for putting plants on septic ﬁelds is to soak up excess wastewater and to absorb nutrients so they do not get into the ground

water and pollute our streams. Certain plants do this job better than others; they have a high transpiration rate, are fast growing, and are tolerant of damp soil. There are two common types of septic ﬁeld; the ﬁrst has dripper lines on the ground surface covered with a mulch. With this sort of system you can plant any of the grasses, shrubs and big trees that we suggest in our printout. The other system has underground

pipes with small seepage holes buried about 60cm below the ground surface. With this second sort of system, care has to be taken to put in the right type of plants. You need to avoid any trees that have masses of feeder roots as they can damage or block the seepage holes along the pipes. Your planting can be purely practical - made up of one or two plant species and planted quickly and cheaply or if your effluent field is going to be close to the house and quite visible, you can put a bit of thought and effort into it and get a great looking garden. into your garden/landscape. Another thing to think about is that not all effluent fields will be damp. For example, a fivebedroom house can have a large septic field engineered for up to 12 people. If there are only two or three people living in the house, the field will be relatively dry. Or if you have very free draining soil (sandy), it will be quite dry as well. We generally recommend planting at one plant per square metre; this is for a mixed species planting using big and small plants. If you wanted to use mainly small growing grasses, then more will need to be planted per metre. With groundcovers and big trees, you could use a bit less.
