T

his year, March marks the month of all things green, leprechaun and chocolatey. Easter is upon us and all the traditions that go with it. Whether it’s an annual family holiday that you plan, a new work out regime, a yearly chocolate overload or giving thanks for the sacrifice that was made, it’s a perfect time of year to reflect. The weather is cooling and the darkness creeps in. It’s the gentle closing of one tropical chapter and the beginning of the crispy next. As our family enjoys our fortnightly weekend walks, it is beautiful to stop and acknowledge the colours changing around us. The change in the air and the movement into a new season. Stop for a moment and notice. Unwind… grab a hot cup of tea and chill out with SAVVY in hand. Read about a local artist making a difference in the hard times, business celebrations and what to wear now its autumn. We hope you enjoy,

OUR PEOPLE

Making a difference to saying goodbye In bittersweet fashion, the casket painting market opened up to local artist, Jessie Rose this time last year when a woman very special to her passed away after a short illness. To honour her life she offered to paint the casket in a way that represented her. A practical gift that she felt honoured to be able to give as Liz had been like a second mum to her. During this sad time it soon proved that being able to reflect on a beautiful casket that represented a loved one helped in a small way in the healing journey. “I promised her it would be beautiful and graceful and

the best representation of the woman she was and the life she lived that I could possibly create.” Jessie was soon asked to paint another one for the showroom at Morris and Morris here in Whangarei and eight months later the requests are keeping her busy. “As Liz went through Morris and Morris the casket was seen by the staff, and I was offered by the manager to paint one for their show room. Several months after her death, when I felt I could face another casket, I painted another one and it sold within a week.” No one likes to talk about death, but it is unavoidable for all of us. To be sent away in something beautiful and hand-painted can make a small difference to the goodbye and Jessie is comforted with the fact that she is helping people in some of the hardest times of life. “There was nothing really feminine out there. I wanted to produce caskets that are light, feminine and graceful,” Jessie says. Jessie paints three different designs and spends time insuring they are absolutely perfect. Fly Free – an open bird cage with birds flying out.

Peace – a light and elegant design. Forever Love – a black wash with a heart, locket and key on the top. Each design is just as popular as the other, as they resonate with so many personalities and walks of life. The caskets are available here in Whangarei at Morris and Morris, in Dargaville at Hart Funerals and the three branches of Davis Funerals in Auckland. The unique demand is heading toward a full time job for Jessie with each one taking at least 7 hours to complete. The caskets are all painted with eco-friendly acrylic paint. Jessie is also determined not to make these special options financially out of reach for people so the caskets are affordable for anyone to purchase, staying in the midrange. “It is a huge privilege to me as an artist to have been taken on by such a large company, and to be able to make a difference, to make a families grieving process that little bit better during such a sad time is such an honour,” Jessie says.

PICADILLY was created with that one purpose in mind. It is a blend of classic silhouettes and unique pieces that are timeless, ageless and seasonless. A sophisticated updated modern contemporary collection line – created to be worn at home, on-the-go, and dresses up – focusing on rich vivid colours and textures, with a mix of fabrics and novelty treatments.

r you could join the “I’ve just put on six kilos since Christmas” group, there’s a heap of us adjusting to not seeing our toes lately and we

now need a whole size up! Perhaps, though, you could change your job to one that doesn’t require a boring old threadbare uniform and you can spend your entire wages on fabulous options to wear each week. But if a whole new wardrobe is a little too dramatic – don’t forget the “I’m worth it” excuse to brighten up your day. So what to buy this autumn for your new wardrobe or your ‘day brightener’? There seems to be a bit of a cheeky, tartan thing going on in glorious greys charcoals and red – yes welcome back red, you’ve been out of favour for a while and it’s your turn this winter!

Knitwear is huge, either in fabulous autumn tones, neutrals or charcoals with quirky features like tassels, toggles or epaulettes that are stand-out edgy. Capes are the new coat, short or long with dramatic roll collars, leather trim armlets or open fronts. Over-oversized, jumpers are glorious teamed back with skinny leg pull up pants, in safe khaki, black and navy if you’re a Sabatini fan, but tailored cropped jackets and jumpers are still the go with Joseph Ribkoffs exaggerated wide leg knit pant. Autumn is an exciting season, with its wide variety of styles and colours to influence your wardrobe decisions for winter - and to compensate for the new boat he’s just parking in the driveway! Any excuse for a new wardrobe.

Welcome Readers STACEY SPEEDY

With the last of the summer breezes stirring our imaginations this creates visions of making a statement with some vibrant colours to match our healthy summer glow.

I

t’s exciting to see some strong and bold colours coming through, however, have you wondered why some colours appear to make you look washed out and yet others leave you feeling uplifted and ready to take on the world? Colours can reflect our moods and consciously or sub consciously we dress to suit how we feel. Red gets energy flowing and a colour that makes a statement. It can also make us feel secure within ourselves. Fabulous to wear when giving presentations or need to be noticed in a meeting as it commands a presence. Pink expresses love, compassion and happiness. A very nurturing colour that is soothing and great to wear when we want to appear friendly and approachable. Blue is the friendliest colour of the spectrum. Worn by the police force, as it’s known as the most approachable colour.

The love/hate relationship we have with the colour Black is forever ongoing. Often over worn the colour Black can be seen as sophisticated and authoritative yet also as intimidating and unfriendly. Style Tip: The desire is to have a harmonious look that is balanced with our natural colouring. If a colour is not in your colour palette however you still love to wear it, try teaming it with something or perhaps not wearing so close to your face, this can soften the effects. Remember we want to wear the colour not have the colour wearing us. When the compliments you receive are more about how great you look, and not just about the clothes, you’ll know you have created a look that is TRULY YOU! Stacey Speedy is a Personal Stylist and owner of style consulting business Truly You. Visit www.trulyyou.co.nz to find out more.

itting in front of the mirror under the special day lighting allows for your true colouring to be analysed correctly. Using the special drapes across the chest reflects up on the face showing up the under tones of the skin. We all have an under tone, either warm or cool. This is the first process in determining the correct colour group for each individual. Deterring the undertone helps with learning which metals to wear in jewellery and glasses.

The colour of the accessories we complement our outfits with does make the difference to our overall finished appearance. A bit of advice when choosing your hair removal provider

CACI WHANGAREI TALKS TO SAVVY READERS

It’s important to take care when choosing your hair removal provider, to ensure you are getting the best possible results, in a safe and trusted environment.

T

here are 3 different types of hair removal machines and they all treat unwanted hair using an intense pulsating beam of light; Laser Machines, IPL Machines and VPL Machines. While there are technical differences between the machines, for the sake of simplicity, we often use the term “laser” for them all. Caci were the first to bring laser hair removal technology to New Zealand. We started with lasers, and then progressed to IPL and now we use the latest generation VPL (variable pulsed light) in all our Caci clinics for laser hair removal. The variable settings mean that the machines can effectively treat the different types of hair found all over the body, from thicker underarm hair to finer facial hair. At Caci we ensure that you understand the treatment process and ensure that you are suitable for the treatment. During your free consultation, we fully explain the process, expectations, costs, and advise you of any risks associated with this treatment. With some lower powered at-home machines, there is also the risk of Light Induced Hypertrichosis, which is stimulated hair growth. If the energy level is too low, the treated hair may fall out, but the effect may not be permanent. If the energy level

is too high then you may risk a burn. All Caci staff have been extensively trained at the Caci Training Academy, and we have very thorough processes in place to ensure you receive the highest level of care, with minimal risk, in a safe environment. At Caci, a course of laser hair removal can take up to 48 weeks to ensure that we have treated the hair follicles in each growth phase. We also offer an exclusive guarantee, see us for more details. During the treatment, some people feel no pain at all and some feel a slight heat sensation, and some have likened the sensation to mild stinging or the flicking of a rubber band. Generally the coarser or thicker the hair, the greater the sensation. Some people may experience a temporary skin response ranging from mild redness to, rarely, blistering. There is also a very rare risk of scarring occurring. If you would like to find out more about laser hair removal, call Caci on 0800 458 458 and book a complimentary consultation to see if it’s right for you. Special Offer: Until 31 March, Caci are offering you the opportunity to treat two areas for the price of one with their laser hair removal programme.

Three Simple Steps to Looking Slimmer in Photographs

If you are going to read anything on being in front of a camera, read this!

SARAHLEE COBB

T

his is the third article on your guide to being photogenic, and one of the most important. Not only is remembering to have good posture important when being photographed but the way you stand is important too. If you are going to read anything on being in front of a camera, read this! 1. Know where your feet are pointing, they should be 45degrees to the photographer. That is slightly to their left or right, but not straight on. Whichever direction your feet are pointing the rest of the body will follow and everyone is smaller side-on than they are from straight on. 2. Place your feet shoulder width apart, place your body weight on your back foot and bend your front knee. This means that your hips are further away from the camera, making them look smaller. Or if you want to accentuate your curves put your body weight on your front foot. 3. Pop your hip out to the side, and curve your back. This adds extra shape and enhances your feminine hourglass figure. Even if you feel that you don’t have a waist, this movement work wonders. As you can see from the photographs there is a huge difference in my body shape from a simple move. Not only will it make you look smaller but it also adds interest to the photo with more angles and curves. And you’ll look more confident because you know how look the

best you can, meaning more smiles.

WOMEN IN B USINESS

From Air Force to working on cruise ships and everything in between I realised my little business idea was not a stupid idea at all

Business name and when it was established. Cadenshae, April 2015

Describe your business in less than 50 words. We design and sell active-wear for nursing mums. Our drive is to inspire and motivate new mums to be healthy and active by offering a colourful, stylish range of functional nursing clothes all suitable for exercising.

What has been your biggest business challenge over the past year, and how are you tackling it? It sounds a bit cliché but it seriously has been trying to juggle family with business. We launched the business the week my second daughter was born. We had an 18 month old, a new born and a new business and it was very daunting. We are getting there but it takes a lot of work. In saying that I wouldn’t change it for the world :)

What do you do in your leisure time? We go on family trips to the beach. Or my partner and i just sit still for 5 minutes and have a coffee together. We are also absolute sports fanatics so whatever is on, we are most probably watching it.

What awards or accolades are you most proud of? Oh that’s a hard one. I really don’t know. I have done quite a few random jobs in my 29 years. I guess, honestly, my family is my biggest achievement this far and together we are really proud of our business.

What community or charity initiatives do you currently support? We always try and offer vouchers and giveaways to local business owners and or sponsor local events. We also run a bra donation drive each year for an awesome charity that provides bras for women in need in countries all around the world.

What is your proudest moment? Having babies, meeting the most amazing guy, buying a house and the moment I realised my little business idea was not a stupid idea at all and actually something worth pursuing. That was pretty cool.

What is your most embarrassing moment? Mmm something I will never live down, and ALL of my friends will gladly tell you. At high school I asked a bunch of my friends “I know that peanuts are in peanut slabs, but what kind of nuts are in an Almond Gold?”. Oh dear.

What was your first job? Working at Vege Twins when I was 13years old for $3p/h BEFORE TAX. That’s right. and I actually did it for more than 6 months, which is really quite incredible given my more recent track record with jobs.

What is the strangest thing you have ever bought? I’m not big on shopping so when I do buy something its usually very well calculated... mmm maybe high heels? I find them pretty strange now and I NEVER wear them. Do they count? Is that strange enough?

If you could be anyone else, who would you be, and why? I would be my partner for a day so i could understand how hard it must be living with me!!!!! Ha ha. Plus I know what it feels like to be a mother, but I wonder what it would feel like to be a father. Failing that, I would be one of my kids for the day, being a kid was pretty cool.

HEALTH

A Fitness Message this Easter CORINNE AUSTIN

For those living a lifestyle aligned with one of the many branches of Christianity, Easter is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. A few days into his burial, Jesus rose again.

R

egardless of whether you follow one of the many chains of religion or not, I think there is still a significant and applicable message we can take from this. Something is not dead and gone, unless we really believe it is. Belief is a state of mind that many of us do not quite appreciate the strength or complexity of. We are capable of so much more than we think we are. Belief has the power to change your inner state and your outer world. We can have or achieve anything we believe we can. Conversely, if we believe we cannot have something, it’s unlikely we ever will. How does this relate to health and fitness you ask. Well…

We all get super excited and enthusiastic about our fitness and wellness goals and ambitions from time to time – enter New Year’s Resolutions, for example. We make a solid plan and write down all the essential elements of us achieving our goal. Our inner fire is stoked with motivation daily, and our boundless energy gives us a jolly good head start to us reaching the success that we long for. Then the ordinaries of life happen, and BOOM, suddenly something impacts our plans and throws us this monstrous big hurdle. We often respond to it in such a way that we inflate it to become this ginormous mountain with menacing qualities, one which we often cannot fathom overcoming. Suddenly our goals become lost amongst the dust, often forever.

These things are sent to challenge us, to help us learn, and to help us grow. The great news is that not all is lost. Those goals and dreams never left us – we chose to leave them. If we instead chose to believe that massive hurdle was simply only a wee pot hole, a chance to gather our breath, and take back the reins, then that’s all it would end up being. Believe in yourself and all that you desire. There is something in you that is stronger than any obstacle. On your adventure towards conquering your mighty goals, never forget that, not for one moment. And don’t be an egg this Easter ;-) Corinne Austin Movement and Wellness Motivator www.fitfixnz.co.nz

WE HAVE MOVED! Come and see us at our new premises located at 50 Kamo Road!

Do you feel stressed and tired all the time? Are you having trouble sleeping? Do you have aches and pains that prevent you from truly feeling well? Koy’s Traditional Thai massage can help you regain a sense of health and well-being. Their new premises at no. 50 Kamo road is easy to get to and, best of all, boasts off-street parking for their clients. Chularnee, also known as Jemma, the owner of Koy’s Traditional Massage, sat down with Wendy Roelants to discuss the therapeutic power of traditional Thai massage. These days, more and more people are becoming aware of the health benefits of massage therapy, seeing it as more than merely a self-indulgence. Chularnee knows from many years of practice just how effective traditional Thai massage is in maintaining good health and well-being. In Thailand, massage is a part of everyday life. “The children’s job is to play, go to school and to give massages to their parents and grandparents.” Children are taught Thai massage by their elders in order to help them sustain ongoing good health and these effects have been proven since 800AD. Chularnee is passionate about the many health benefits Thai massage can offer, emphasising its ‘4 in 1’ uses, which are: deep tissue, relaxing, stretching and pressure. “I always ask my clients to call me back and tell me how they are feeling,” and the feedback from her regular customers is testament to the therapeutic powers Thai massage provides, with many of them reporting that they immediately “feel better”. Another benefit is that her clients have an improved sleep, so it’s well worth making an appointment! To celebrate their relocation to 50 Kamo Road, Koy’s Traditional Thai Massage are offering a special on their most popular massage. 4 most common colour mistakes

1 Fear of strong colour Many of us say that we like strong colour, and dress ourselves in bold tones, but when it comes to painting our walls, we choose offwhite or a safe neutral colour. Is it the ‘resale’ boogey man, the fear of frightening future buyers of our homes, that scares us into safety? Don’t let it – who wants to look like every other house on the market? Well-used strong colour is hugely memorable but even if the agent thinks the purple you’ve chosen for the dining room is a bit much, just paint it over before selling. The beauty of paint is that it’s so easily and cheaply changed so if you do have a lapse in colour judgement it’s easy to try something else. Resene has so many tools available to help you make your decisions, like test pots and draw downs, that you can minimise the chance of making a mistake before you buy all of the paint. Maybe ease yourself in gently by painting a feature wall in strong colour first.

2 One size fits all Don’t assume that even if you choose the most neutral of neutral paint colours, you should use it on every surface imaginable – the walls, trims and ceiling. You’ll end up with a bland result and if you have chosen a cool white, you’ll feel like you’re living inside a chilly bin. If you’re after a neutral scheme, there is a vast array of interesting neutrals in the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection and on the cards you can collect at your Resene ColorShop, the colours are handily grouped in variants, ie half, quarter and double etc strengths of the same colour. An effective scheme can be created by using, for example, a full strength of a colour on the walls, a triple strength on a feature wall, a half strength on the trims and a quarter on the ceiling. Instant success!

3 Too hot, too cool Colour is not equal, unchanging and well behaved. Colour responds to compass orientation so can look totally divine in some rooms… and horrible in others. At certain times of the day, the colour we have so carefully chosen can morph into a monster. In south-facing rooms, warm mid-toned colours are best. No amount of pale tints or white will make these rooms appealing because the natural light aspect is cool and grey. Cooler, denser colours will always work best in north-facing rooms. Because of our propensity for huge windows and skylights that allow plentiful sun (and glare) any bright, red, orange or yellow colours will only accentuate the heat and appear far brighter. Complex neutrals work best in eastfacing rooms where the light is cool an clear but where there will be shadowy light from mid morning onwards. West-facing rooms suit mid-toned muted colours as the rosy natural light will enhance cream, beige and taupe until they turn peach or terracotta.

4 Don’t forget the details This last one isn’t strictly about colour, but about keeping you colour looking good for longer. There are all sorts of clever paint technologies to make sure your paint, and the colour it carries, has a longer-lasting better-looking life.

Erika Blank from Bayleys talks to SAVVY readers about getting the best price for your property in a buoyant market ERIKA BLANK v

S

elling your property can be one of the biggest transactions you make in your lifetime. The market is buoyant and the buyers are out there, but they have done their research, they know what things are worth. Getting a buyer emotionally invested in your property is vitally important to achieving the best result when it comes time to sell. So what is it that you can do to make sure that people fall in love with your place?

DISASSOCIATE – Put yourself in a business frame of mind, take a walk through your home as if for the first time and get ready to see it through the eyes of a buyer.

DE-PERSONALISE - Remove items that are specific to you and your family. You want buyers to feel comfortable in your home; it should be generic enough that they can imagine living there. DE-CLUTTER – Clutter makes spaces look smaller and even evokes stress in people, making them think of all the work that needs to be done. Think of it as being really organised and getting a head start on your packing. It will go a long way towards making your house look more spacious and modern.

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN – I cannot stress this enough. If you don’t have the time or the inclination – pay someone. It is worth every penny. FIX – You know all those jobs that you have been meaning to get around to, well now is the time. Potential buyers are looking for every reason they can to pay less for your property – don’t give them one!

LIGHTING – There is nothing worse then walking into a dark home, it may be as simple as replacing your lightbulbs but make sure you do what you can to make your home seem as bright and sunny as possible.

SMELL – You may be used to the smell of those four legged, furry friends of yours but buyers will notice it straight away. If necessary have your carpets cleaned and in many cases a nice fragrant candle can do the trick.

STAGE YOUR HOME – Think about what you can do to make spaces seem larger and work your arrangements around this. Pick a colour palette and bring it throughout the home. There are endless resources online and professionals to help you stage your home on a budget.

INSIST ON QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHY AND MARKETING – The marketing of your property is one of the most important aspects of getting the best result. If it is not marketed correctly and professionally, all of your hard work will go to waste.

GET PROFESSIONAL ADVICE – We are operating in a vibrant and rapidly changing market. What was a great price for your property yesterday may not be so great today. Every day we are seeing people underselling their property and losing out on tens of thousands of dollars for the perceived savings of not having to pay an agent commission. Hiring an agent that understands the market and how to strategically manage the selling process will be the most important decision you will make in getting the best result in the sale of your property.

very day we’re plagued with flyers offering furniture at majorly discounted prices, websites offering furniture direct from China; you can even order an entire kitchen direct from Ali Express! It amazes me how cabinetmakers survive, because the stuff is even cheaper than what we pay at cost. Being the bargain queen I am, I’ve thoroughly researched these deals. I’ll admit, I have freely bought mass-produced furniture in a bid to get my husband to make a cabinet for me (you know what they say about mechanics’ cars and builders’ houses, right?) Most of this is made from what we consider “carcass board”. It looks great for a while. The truth is, that this board is literally what cabinetmakers use to make the shell of a cabinet. The finish is not as higher quality as board designed to be used on the exterior surfaces. Sunlight, pets, children and general everyday use can chip, fade or disintegrate your shiny new piece of furniture within a year. But for the price you pay, why should you care? It’s classed as disposable furniture for a reason. We are creating an environmental landmine. Most of us are guilty of taking the $10 bargain shelves to the tip every time they warp under the weight of a heavy book. Every day I watch our cabinetmakers rip out kitchens that looked amazing when they were installed, but couldn’t stand the test of time. This cabinetry is all thrown in the landfill, and will take hundreds of years to break down. It brings a whole new meaning to passing furniture down to the next generation, doesn’t it? This is why at Next Edition Kitchens we will never scrimp on quality. Whenever practical we use wood, but mostly we use Melteca board, which is certified by Environmental Choice New Zealand as an environmentally preferable product. Contrary to popular belief, quality can be affordable for any budget. Here are some easy ways to afford custom cabinetry for any size wallet. Next Edition Kitchens was formerly known as DMI Kitchens. New owners Ryan and Pippa Bourke took over in September last year. For more information visit www.nexteditionkitchens.com.

6 Best Gallery Wall Layouts Do you have family photos and artwork hung higgledy piggledy all over the house?

I

have pulled together six of the best gallery wall layouts that will let your art and photos shine! Once you’ve got your frames ready it’s time to move on to the hard part: hanging it. I know, it sounds easy — just hammer a nail into the wall, right? — WRONG! Once you start hammering away, there’s no turning back...and you don’t want to be stuck with a million nail holes because you didn’t plan it out! Simply follow these examples and simple tips and you can’t go wrong!

1. Inside the Lines – Tape out a rectangular or square area that you’d like your photos to fill, and arrange them loosely within the borders of the box. This is an easy way to decorate an oddly shaped or narrow space.

2. Above & Below – Using a vertical line, arrange groups of photos above and below the line. Aim to cover about the same area above and below to avoid a top, or bottom heavy arrangement.

3. Spiral Effect – Use a large frame as your central picture and spiral out the rest of the frames from there. This works best with 4 rectangular frames and 4 square frames.

4. Line Them Up – Arrange all of your photos along a vertical line, with the largest one in the centre. This works well in a space with high ceilings, narrow wall spaces, or on vertical structures like a beam or pillar.

5. Centred - This simple, classic layout

which requires minimal effort. Just choose one or two frames to centre and align the left and right sides with one another. This works particularly well if you’re trying to highlight particular pieces of art.

WITH A CUSTOM

MADE MIRROR

6. Nine Square – This simple grid is a take

We can create mirrors to suit your requirements or décor with amazing range of styles to choose from. From traditional to contemporary, there is a frame to complement your home decor.

on the modern gallery-style layout. It’s a simple arrangement that has a big impact. Just ensure your frames are matching in size and width for maximum wow!

Hanging Tips:

• Use all the same coloured frames for a cohesive look. • Select black and white photos to create an understated, classic picture gallery. • Or mix it up with colourful frames and artwork – anything goes as long as you love it! • Lay out all your frames on the floor, and play around until you get the configuration just right. • Next, trace your frames onto paper/ newspaper and cut out the shape. Write on the front which picture it corresponds to. Then you can use blu-tack to pin up the paper frames on the wall, and move them around until they’re perfect. Now you’re ready to start hanging your frames!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

with

The books of Dr. Seuss or Theo LeSieg or Rosetta Stone -- his actual name being Theodor Seuss Geisel -- have found their way into millions of homes and hearts around the world; he is undoubtedly one of the most beloved book authors of all time. Seuss died in 1991, but the unfinished manuscript and some finished line art for this book were found late 2013; and those who had worked with Seuss throughout his career finished the book, remaining true to his effervescent style. It’s a story about a classic childhood moment – choosing a pet. It’s also a story about making decisions – sometimes it’s hard, but you just have to make up your mind.

WHAT’S ON

OPERA IN THE GARDEN

Opera in the Garden still going strong T his year is the 20th anniversary concert of the musical festival known as Opera in the Garden. Twenty years ago the orchard in Glenbervie now called “Operacado”, was bought by Rick and Joan Kennaway with two thoughts in mind. One was to effect a life change from farming to growing organic avocados and the other (and perhaps the more important) was to provide a venue for an annual summer outdoor festival of operatic and classical music. The first concert in 1997 featured a group of 18 singers and guest artists Patricia and Ken Cornish and Roger Creagh, accompanied by Susan Smith. No one knew if an audience would come apart from family members and costs were kept low “just in case”. The stage was made up of fruit bins loaned by Huanui Orchards and the singers had to “walk a plank” to get up on to this makeshift platform. The old upright piano was on the lawn in front of the stage. They thought the garden would perhaps hold 300 people. More than 500 attended. Whangarei’s Opera in the Garden was well and truly born and the second Saturday in March for the next 20 years saw hundreds of Northlanders flock to Operacado for this annual event.

Join us with special guest artist

Emma Couper and the Opera North singers to celebrate the 20th Opera in the Garden concert.

This year the programme ranges over a wide selection of classical and popular songs from well-known Opera and Musical theatre as the Opera North singers re-enact the best of the past 20 years and introduce several memorable new songs.

Saturday 12th March 2016 Starts 3pm. Kennaways’ Operacado Orchard, 643 Ngunguru Rd, Glenbervie. Adults $35, School age children $15.

Opera in the Garden has certainly had its dramatic moments. In 2012 Jack was to sing Pie Jesu with Caleb and developed stomach pains as he arrived at the concert. Half an hour later he was admitted to hospital and Joan stepped in to the duet. In 2002 the concert was held at Barge Park as a fund raiser with Whangarei Sunrise Rotary Club. Joan’s daughter Bronny lost her voice and once again Joan stepped into the septet and a couple of years later, she certainly stretched herself when she sang

the middle part in the trio from Magic Flute when Anthea Hawkins had to hastily return to the UK. These days we have many more talented singers who could take the place of sick people as usually more than one learns each part Today, Opera North is a group of 65 very talented and enthusiastic singers who are supported by the talented repetiteurs, Lachie McLean and Clare Henderson. Past accompanists Margie Paul and Juan Kim

continue to be involved with the group. The music is devised and conducted by Joan Kennaway and the concert provides an opportunity for the dedicated singers to perform to an enthusiastic audience and of course, for the audience to appreciate a classical music concert not often available in Northland. For many years, Radio NZ’s Peter Fry compered the show until he finally retired and now local optician Craig Robertson performs this role in his own inimitable style. In 2008 His Excellency the Governor General, Sir Anand Satyanand, opened the show and Dame Malvina Major performed as our guest artist despite being stricken by a cold. For the past few years we have used local artists in the guest spot and we intend to follow this policy where possible. We certainly have a marvellous pool of wonderful performers to pick from. This anniversary year Joan has devised a programme incorporating many of the favourite songs from past concerts. The guest artist is Emma Couper, a Waipu lady and pupil of Joan’s with the most stunning coloratura soprano voice. Tickets are available from Whangarei Suit Hire or from our website www.operanorth.co.nz

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

Smart, Spacious and full of Surprises

hen it comes to targeting a new audience, BMW has taken a sporty vehicle from its line-up, added some family-friendly packaging and popped a fancy new badge – and it works. With compact SUVs and crossovers so popular worldwide, it makes sense for the company to produce more and more vehicles that the public want. And it seems the Kiwi customers are keen on BMW’s latest offering, the 2 Series Active Tourer. While it may be based on the latest Mini five-door, with the same platform and in the case of pictured car, the $51,900 218i, the same 100kW/220Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine and sixspeed automatic gearbox. But that is where the similarities end. Inside the Active Tourer is roomy with plenty of headspace and legroom for front and rear passengers. Then comes the large boot – big enough for family weekends away and that weekly supermarket shop. The three-cylinder engine is an energetic delight with the steering and suspension tailored towards comfort and the centre

of gravity is higher. Styling-wise the interior is pure BMW, with the signature convex dashboard and a tablet-like iDrive screen mounted atop the centre console. The Active Tourer also comes with the full suite of BMW Connected Drive services, including Internet access and a 24-hour concierge. Active Tourer is packed with clever interior features, such as rear seats that slide fore and aft to mix and match passenger legroom with cargo space. The seats themselves are cleverly split 40/20/40, like those in a 3 Series Touring or X5. The boot has a false floor that provides a flat load-through when the rear seats are folded, so you can either have a hidden compartment underneath or remove it completely for a deeper boot. And cargo capacity can be expanded to 1510 litres. The 218i is well specified with collision warning alert and autonomous braking at urban speeds, automated parking and rear camera.

LAST WORD

Can you live without it?

ften possessions or the desire to have them lead us into debt and debt is what gets a lot of people into financial strife. “We are all so used to having debt that if we had none our minds would start thinking about what we could do if we were to take out a new loan” - David Wright We can blame debt on outside influences, take for example television advertising, the latest Iphone 6s. Seeing an advertisement over and over can start putting ideas into our heads - we’ve always been happy with our mobile phone because all we need it for is – to keep in touch. But, the latest iPhone 6 – it’s faster, can link us into a lot more things, can take photos, can get emails, can … “Advertisements are messages paid for by those who send them and are intended to inform or influence people who receive them”. Telling us all the benefits, convincing us that we can’t live without it but not reminding us that the purchase of it can lead to DEBT. Yes we need a phone, we need a car but do we need the DEBT that goes along with those expensive options? Perhaps its time to change the way we think about possessions and take the time to check out what extra costs will be tagged on before signing anything.

Recipe Chicken with pineapple & walnuts - 1oz walnuts - 2 chicken breast chopped into pieces - 1 cup chicken stock (can use some of the juice to make up stock if using a stock cube) - 1 onion - Salt & Pepper - Lemon juice - Nutmeg - Cornflour - 1 small tin pineapple pieces or slices, - 4tbsp cream - 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (fried in 2tbsp of oil or butter then remove from pan) Add to the pan chopped onion along with chicken pieces that have been coated in flour. Fry until brown then add to this chicken stock, 1tbsp lemon juice, salt and pepper and a pinch of nutmeg, blend well but don’t boil. In a separate container blend together 1tbsp cornflour with 2tbsp pineapple juice then stir this into the chicken til the liquid thickens add the walnuts and chopped pineapple and 4tbsp cream. If the mix is a little thick just add a bit more of the pineapple juice.

G

oing from one child to two was a shock. I thought that my life was so busy with one little baby to care for and after she ate, poohed and slept it felt like I had very little time to clean the rank old dishes from the sink. When she got to the stage where my cups of tea were spilt on the floor, my concentration halved and my fitness levels doubled from running after a toddler all day, I decided it would be a good idea to do it all again 22 months later. Hello, crazy times. With the demand of a newborn coupled with the energy of a two year old this made for a tired and baby-brained mum. Once the grizzly baby had finally given in to a much needed nap, it was clean up duty wiping marmite from the walls, puddles of wee from the floor when the toilet seemed a monstrous ghost, clearly much safer in her eyes to find the corner of the lounge and relieve herself there or run away outside. After clean up it would be play time. Playtime, clean up, playtime, clean up. Once one basket of toys was packed away, behind mum’s back another was being dumped all over the bedroom floor. Washing piles looked more like Mt Everest

and dishes sat for longer than ever before on that cluttered kitchen sink. I would roll into bed each night, not knowing what the sleepy hours would bring. Eight hours… never, four hours maybe…. a couple of hours? More like it. The odds were against me now. For those of you who followed my column, this special but somewhat busy time in our lives made me confident that this was all I could cope with and although the wonder of number three was out there, I was content with having a bit of a breather once they were independent of calling me into the toilet room for help. Long story short, when the kids started school, we met our beloved wonder. What was an initial hard road turned into a scenic drive to paradise as we welcomed the bundle of joy and happiness into our family. For all I worried about, I needn’t had. Three these days brings more juggle, more patience, more busy, more organised, more voices, more attention and more crazy. It also brings with it, an older brother and sister who simply adore the baby of the family, more protection, more fun, more giggles, more delight and more beautiful life to this family unit of five.
