A with us.

s I sit here tapping at the keys, the rain belts down outside and it feels like winter has finally caught up

July screams high boots, wholesome food, fires, red wine and earlier nights. For a time however, it does bring the dreary rain so I will share a story with you to lift the cooler spirits. It was a great reminder for me to finally ‘think winter’. I sent the kids to school the other day with crazy hair. It was meant to be ‘Wig Wednesday’ but in the middle of a chronic week and telling me as their heads hit the pillow… wigs never eventuated. Therefore, before mum flew out the door I grabbed the only wacky thing I could think of at seven in the morning. Face paint! Miss Nine left with neat black streaks and Master Seven, black spikes as well as some awesome leopard spots at the back. I had convinced them, they were out the door and feeling great. It wasn’t until I was working away in the warm dry office that I realised how heavy that rain was. Suddenly I pictured dripping black painted faces, soaked hair and a sad couple not feeling all that wacky and cool. Parenting fail washed over me.

20-21

Then, I giggled out loud. We can’t win them all and it adds to the excitement of life, right? Have a crazy winter and stay warm out there!

OUR PEOPLE

Creating visual memories of life’s reflections PHILIPPA MANNAGH

S

andra Whyte works as a full time Fine Artist in Whangarei, creating realistic paintings in oil. The paintings, often in the form of landscape and wildlife reflect her love of our wilderness. Her native, endemic and common bird paintings are loved by both locals and tourists alike. Commission paintings feature readily in Sandra’s career. She enjoys the art of giving and likes to create paintings for conservation groups to raise money and awareness of the beauty and vulnerability of our country’s treasures. “I have a European background with a link to Maori in the past. This link sparked an interest in how Maori relate to our country, with passion and integrity. Just as I paint it,” Sandra says. She is often asked if one can learn to paint or is it just something that comes naturally. The short answer she says is, “I have no idea!” “What I do know is that my Grandmother on one side was

a landscape artist and my Great Grandfather on the other side was also. It was in my genes. I’ve always enjoyed being creative in some way or another. I started to paint later in life to fill a void and never looked back. I have a way of ‘feeling’ and ‘seeing through’ my subject matter when I paint,” she says. “The eye for detail can never be fooled. ‘Know’ your subject and you’re half way there.” “I have been lucky enough to have a lovely couple in Auckland as my patrons. Successful business people themselves, they have now decided to help the likes of myself achieve my goal. Providing moral support, business mentoring and commissioned work. Honestly, the long road to becoming a professional artist I may never have taken had my talent not been discovered by this couple. I am eternally grateful.” Sandra has a love of tramping with close friends whenever she can get away to some remote, beautiful corner

of the country which leads to the landscape paintings she’s known for. “There I found a fascination for the flora and fauna, eventually leading to volunteer work in this area as time permitted.” Sandra has always had an interest in art but took up painting later in life only to find a gift waiting to immerse. Being largely self taught leaves Sandra with a unique style quite unlike any other painter in New Zealand. Sandra enjoys working with her clients to produce beautiful commission studies that immortalise memories in oil on canvas forever. The future holds new work to grace the gallery walls of New Zealand, the possibility of exhibitions and the continued addition of Ltd Edition Prints that are loved by both local and international markets. One of Sandra’s many new paintings includes a stamp she has painted for New Zealand Post released this year.

Three Hairdressing takes out Top NZ Team Award WORDS BY WORDPERFECT

W

hangarei’s most recognised hairdressing team has once more taken home top honours, this time from the recent Industry NZ Hairdressing Awards. Being recognised as Team of the Year for 2016 is a huge success to this dedicated salon, highlighting their commitment to their industry, their personal development, and – of course – their team! Their photographer Karen Ishiguro won Photographer of the Year with the photographic collection while their makeup artist, Rebekah Banks, was also a finalist in Makeup Artist of the Year. Three Hairdressing co-owners Hazel, Jemal and Katie are ecstatic with this tremendous achievement, praising both their team’s dedication and their creativity. The Industry NZ Hairdressing Awards are an annual photographic competition, giving hairdressers around NZ the opportunity to showcase their skill level with hair and styling. The internationally-judged awards are a chance for teams to display their creative talent, taking on a different set of challenges. For Three Hairdressing, it was an opportunity for further team development, with many hours spent discussing, planning, creating and then shooting the models to achieve the perfect result. Three Hairdressing were also proud to use local amateur models, offering a unique opportunity to young women who had never experienced anything of the kind. “The entire experience was fantastic,” says Hazel of the salon’s success, “it was an opportunity for team building, to build up more branding for our salon, and to gain national recognition. Our entire team had input in this collection – from the planning, to the discussion of ideas, to the execution of the look and style, it all took time and a lot of teamwork! “On the day of the actual shoot, everything worked perfectly because we had put so many hours into our preparation and practice – and the collection is a strong reflection of who we are as a team.” Co-owner Jemal is also over the moon with the recent success. “It’s fantastic to be recognised on a national level, and we’re immensely proud of our team and what we’ve created.“ The Three Hairdressing team are not ones to rest on their laurels however, and focus is already shifting to their next challenge: the NZARH Regional Hairdressing Competitions in early July. Congratulations Three Hairdressing, the Industry NZ Team of the Year!

Absolutely essential, I need it now,‘must haves’ for winter BY KAREN MATICH, POLWARTH DESIGN

U

nsure of what to wear this winter?? Well it’s no wonder. With temperatures still soaring into the low 20s, it’s unbelievable that we’ve had so few chilly days. Your decisions are not helped either, by the glossy new trends showcased in the latest fashion publications which appear to conjure up ‘new looks’ that emulate getting dressed in the dark. Are they really encouraging us to wear that bloused calf length shirtdress tied at the waist with paisley tights and flat ankle boots??? What about those culottes? How dare they suggest we tuck in and belt them!!! That means rediscovering our waistlines and finding the hole punch for the jeans belt! Fashion has always been cyclic – it has to be or you wouldn’t need to upgrade. New trends are introduced gradually, but it doesn’t mean we have to get rid of the old!! We’ve decided to make it easy for you. While you’ve been basking in Indian summer after Indian summer, we’re three and a half months into our winter season and we’ve got it sussed, so from real experience with real women (thanks to our fabulous Polwarth Design customers) here’s our tick list of ‘must haves’ for this winter. Get yourself a great ankle boot this season. They’ve done a complete take-over from the knee boot, teamed back with everything - jeans, tailored pants, culottes, dresses or straight skirts and worn with gutsy opaque

tights or knee highs - they walk the talk. Skinny jeans are still massive, even with the flicker of flares, boot legs and straights in the fashion forecasts they are always a ‘must’. Worn scrunched, rolled, torn and tight to complement the fabulously comfortable ‘oversized’ sweater look that is so easy to wear in winter, they can be classic button fly or easy-peasy pull up. The resurgence of the white shirt, either layered under a sleeveless shell top or peeking out from a round neck cropped jumper, creates a refreshing, crisp look for winter. Flick a long line merino, calf length cardy or blanket wrap cape over this and you can achieve an interesting layered look, which is stylish and snug!! Nothing beats a statement coat. If it’s Sabatini it’s a walking piece of art. In merino, gabardine, boiled wool, fur, leather faux and blends, these knee to ankle length creations make cold mornings a celebration!! Still unsure of what to wear this winter?? Well ladies, when winter does finally come, even if it arrives when the shops are full of summer stock; just congratulate yourself for your forward thinking. Those magnificent transseasonal winter pieces that you purchased ‘in season’ when you had full choice of style, colour and size will have their day. Thanks to global warming, while you are wearing those delectable, fabulous, snug winter pieces please do come in-store to view the new Spring/Summer ranges that will have hit the floor in July/August!!!!!!!!

s the winter chills surround us its time to embrace each season for its uniqueness, this season brings the choice of coats, furs and leather jackets to compliment any winning winter outfit. When dressing for outings think of finishing with a classy yet comfortable coat or jacket. With such a versatile range on offer it’s easy to get misled with styles, shapes and colours. Think of your body shape, what you will be layering it with and what you can team it up with from your wardrobe. You want to be able to dress it up with some polished extras to go from nine to night if desired. A coat that makes a statement yet that blends with you and your lifestyle.

A few of my fun favourites are in Trelise Cooper’s exquisite range. The furs are divine and bring warmth to any winter occasion. With wild prints they bring this seasons fashion alive. Mix them up with bold colour or funk them up with wildly patterned separates. I am also a great fan of the tartan, so traditional yet stylish, in red its vibrant and fresh. To bring life to winter woes these coats are destined to catch the eye of the fashion conscious. With spectacular colours this season this continues on to our hair colour… hues of nature are coming through, the coppers and the rose golds. Keeping things natural looking with extended regrowth is a must and the bob or the lop is still making a statement. With keeping things natural, the undone look is popular, with more natural waves. Extreme

partings are a good way to lift your look from casual to classy. Remember Your hair is your most important accessory and its one that you can’t leave home without. Whatever your desired look, wear it with a smile as style is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside…X

Warm up to winter W

arm up to WINTER Midwinter is here and temperatures have plummeted, which means you can get out your thermals and puffer jacket, whether you are heading to the slopes or just the local shops. Thick cable-knit scarves and beanies will keep you snug and stylish on or off the slopes. It is all about the pompom this winter and going oversize on your beanie. Huge shades are essential to beat sun and snow glare, and of course to look cool. For a trendy look, go for a coloured or mirrored lens. I love the new Karen Walker Superstars sunglasses, which reinvented KDub’s most famous sunnies with an astronaut theme. If you are heading to the snow, grab a pair of new goggles from Oakley. Its super-chic Flight Deck XM Prizm goggles are in hot demand amongst snow bunnies. The technology in the lens enhances contrast and visibility over a wide range of light conditions to help you see clearer, react faster and ride with confidence in the snow.

T

he Rotary Club of Whangarei South is once again proud to announce that this year will be the 39th year of the Bernina Northland Fashion Awards. “This is a great event for Northland, where we all get to see the amazing talents that we have here” says Vince Cocurullo Project organiser for the Rotary Club. The Bernina Northland Fashion Awards help encourage and create a platform for the up-and coming designers in Northland, along with demonstrating the sheer talents that Northland has over any other region. With last year’s show being full of vibrancy with a WOW factor, this year’s show is building on that, with Artist Director Daniel Matene coming on board again. He has plans to make the 40th year bigger again, so don’t miss out. Fashion in Northland has changed through the years, and this year is no different, with the addition of two new categories like Steam Punk and Retro-redesign, we get to see what Northland is able to do, when compared to places like Oamaru. Last year there were contestants from the Kaipara and as far North as Kaitaia and as South as Maungaturoto, so what will this year bring? Steel suits of Armour, or

Lead Dentist and Otago graduate Dr Matt Ross has recently been awarded a Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, Scotland. He is one of the first in Australasia to gain this prestigious qualification. Focusing since 2010 on this specialised field, has seen him working fulltime and studying hard part time to achieve this goal. Matt performs implant surgery at the Bank Street Surgery, offering options from a single implant right through to “All on four surgery”, where a full mouth of teeth can be replaced. This means that denture wearers can finally have the satisfaction that they can begin to eat again with confidence. Matt has 20 years’ experience in general dentistry and has been restoring implants for 15 years. He loves the way that implant retained and supported teeth can change people’s lives. Matt has developed a unique skills set in order to provide patients with a wide variety of services. Patients go away with a positive experience and feeling that they have been treated with the utmost respect and professionalism. He also believes in a hygiene-focused practice where patients become highly motivated and well informed by the comprehensive care they receive. Offering Conscious Sedation under IV means that Matt is able to help nervous patients control their fears and come to the dentist again. Matt’s sensitive and caring chairside

manner is very reassuring to these patients. Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is another speciality of Matt’s. The patient’s own blood, is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and white blood cells from the plasma forming PRF. PRF is used to reduce pain and inflammation and accelerate healing of extraction and implant sites. It is truly amazing! Orthodontics are another thing the Bank Street practice offers. Matt and his colleague Teresa Brinkley both provide functional Orthodontics for their patients from the age of 7 years. Matt provides Invisalign, the clear alternative to braces, whilst Teresa offers a range of treatments with more traditional braces and appliances. What makes us special? The team at Lumino Bank Street is what gives this practice a point of difference. Traditional Thai Massage

T

he Thai culture is a relaxed one and Koy’s Traditional Thai Massage owner Chularnee is determined to bring this element to the people of Whangarei. Like all Thai children, Chularnee, also known as Jemma, was trained from an early age to provide massage to her elder family members. From there, stemmed a passion and career, encompassing regular revised training, culminating in sharing her talent through her own business in Thai massage. As well as traditional Thai massage, Koy’s offer aromatherapy, deep tissue sports, hot stone and foot reflexology massage. Long-time Whangarei customer and osteoporosis and arthritis sufferer Kitty, has been returning fortnightly to Koy’s for years. “The reflexology is a big help for me as I have a lot of tension and stress in my back. The massage and manipulation makes me feel relaxed and comfortable. I’ve even fallen asleep during a foot massage. By the time I leave, I feel like a million dollars, I tell you. It just takes the stress away.”

Chularnee is passionate about the many health benefits Thai massage can offer, emphasising its ‘4 in 1’ uses, which are: deep tissue, relaxing, stretching and pressure. She explains that many people carry tension in their neck, shoulders and upper back, which blocks the passages for oxygen. “Massage brings the oxygen flow back. I notice many customers leaving here with brighter eyes and more wide awake.” Situated at 50 Kamo Rd with off-street parking, the ambience is friendly and relaxed with beautiful décor, including fresh flowers, set with tranquil background music and a pleasant aroma. The Koy’s team of four includes Penny, Penwun and Promjit, also known as Korn, who, after spending a year in Thailand, recently returned, much to her customers’ delight. The fourth member is, of course, Chularnee, who has lived in New Zealand the last 24 years and took over the 14-year-old Koy’s Traditional Thai Massage 1.5 years ago. She attributes the business’ success to her talented team.

“Each of our girls massages in their own way. They feel their customers’ tension and transfer their own healing powers accordingly.”

Create your own Winter of Wellness BY CORINNE AUSTIN

W

inter can be a glorious time – you just have to be smart about how you tackle it! Here’s a few useful tips to help you experience more wins than woes this Winter, and for creating your own Winter Wonderland of Wellness: Winter-fy your workout: Exercise can (and will) boost your mood, and you need that lift even more during the winter. It needs to be an essential part of your ‘survive the winter’ plan. You must give yourself some incentive – anything that works for you! Jot down an exercise

schedule at the beginning of the week, varying your ordinary type of sweat fest to keep it interesting – winter-fy it so you have NO excuses to not do it. Beat the Cravings: Resist the urge to gorge on fatty, sugary comfort foods which will wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels and energy. HEALTH

Glaucoma: the silent disease Glaucoma, the leading cause of preventable blindness, About 91,000 New Zealanders over the age of 40 have glaucoma and more than half don’t know they have it. Glaucoma is a silent disease; you can be legally blind before you notice the symptoms loss of peripheral vision. Early detection of glaucoma is vital when it comes to preventing blindness. That means having an eye examination for glaucoma every five years from the age of 45 and every three years from the age of 60. However, if at any age, you notice changes in your eyesight, you should have your eyes examined. The good news is that 98% of those who comply with their prescribed treatment for glaucoma will not go blind.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the name given to a group of eye diseases where the optic nerve at the back of the eye is slowly destroyed. In most people the damage is due to increased pressure inside the eye – a result of blockage of the circulation of aqueous (fluid), or its drainage. In others, the damage may be caused by poor blood supply to the vital optic nerve fibers, or a weakness in the structure of the nerve, and/or a problem in the health of the nerve fibers themselves.

Basic facts about glaucoma:

• There are different types of glaucoma, but they all involve damage to the optic nerve. • Glaucoma is not curable. • If you have glaucoma it must be monitored for the rest of your life. Current treatments for glaucoma all aim to lower eye pressure. Medication in eye drops can have side effects on other parts of your body. Tell your eye specialist. • People of all ages can get glaucoma. • Risk factors include, A family history, over 60, Asian, African American, Hispanic, Steroid users.

Types of Glaucoma:

Open-angle Glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma and happens when the eye’s drainage canals resist the outflow of fluid. This results in the pressure in the eye, increasing because the fluid cannot drain out. Normal Pressure Glaucoma is when the optic nerve is damaged even though eye pressure is within the normal range 12-22mmHg. Angle Closure Glaucoma occurs if the path of fluid to the angle narrows or becomes blocked. Traumatic Glaucoma is any glaucoma caused by an injury to the eye. This type of glaucoma can occur both immediately after an injury to the eye or years later. Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome PXF (or Exfoliation

Syndrome) In PXF, flaky white material clogs the trabecular meshwork, Which is a filter-like tissue responsible for draining the aqueous humor from the eye via the anterior chamber Juvenile Glaucoma Babies and children can develop Glaucoma. Pigment Dispersion Syndrome (PDS)/Pigmentary Glaucoma is when black pigment granules clog the trabecular meshwork.

Eye Exam

A comprehensive exam, can reveal more risk factors, such as high eye pressure, thinness of the cornea, and abnormal optic nerve anatomy. A Glaucoma test usually includes: • Optic nerve check • Slit Lamp examination • Eye Pressure check(Tonometry) • Visual Field and/or OCT Scan

■ The same view with advanced vision loss from glaucoma

Can glaucoma be treated?

Yes. Immediate treatment for early stage, open-angle glaucoma can delay progression of the disease. While these treatments may save remaining vision, they do not improve any sight already lost from glaucoma. Medicines, in the form of eye drops or pills, are the most common early treatment for glaucoma. Some medicines cause the eye to make less fluid, others lower pressure by helping fluid drain from the eye. Other treatments if drops fail include Laser trabeculoplasty /iridotomy, surgical trabeculoplasty. he winter nights are closing in, but with the shortest day of the year behind us, it’s time to start looking ahead to summer!

You could use the next six months to get yourself upskilled and all set to go with a new career in hospitality. NorthTec offers a range of programmes tailored to the needs of the local industry, and with programmes starting in July and finishing by the end of the year, you’ll be just in time for the peak tourism season. The New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage is a level 3 programme which prepares you for work in Northland’s many cafés. You’ll learn about kitchen health and safety, food preparation and service. You’ll also learn how to provide great customer service and how to brew a fabulous cup of coffee. The programme will equip you to work as a barista or café worker, and will also give you the skills for counter service and working at large functions. You can choose to go straight into employment with your new-found skills, or continue your studies at the next level, specialising in restaurant service. NorthTec also offers the New Zealand Certificate in Cookery – another level 3 programme which teaches the skills required for the industry locally. It’s an essential introduction to professional cookery and will prepare you to work as a junior chef in a commercial kitchen. You’ll learn how to prepare, cook and present a range of basic dishes, while learning all about industry health and safety, plus food safety and security practices. On this programme you’ll complete papers in meat, fish

You’ll learn how to whip up meals to commercial standards, and also develop great customer service and communications skills. Graduates of this programme will be well-trained hospitality professionals in high demand by local employers. Shahn Allen – Hospitality student Shahn was a stay-at-home mum for five years, and while she loved being there for her children, she found her confidence suffered after being out of the workplace. Keen to get back to the industry she used to work in, Shahn found that regaining her confidence while training at NorthTec was as important as refreshing her old skills and learning new ones. Shahn said: “The biggest challenge for me has been to re-find my confidence and my people skills. To anyone out there struggling with confidence, I say you just have to jump into a course and do it, and trust in your tutors to support you. My tutor is amazing. She makes sure we get

absolutely everything out of the course that we can.” She said she has really enjoyed her studies at NorthTec: “I love the whole course here. We work hands-on in the campus cafés so we get immediate feedback from the other students. They soon tell you if your coffee sucks!” Shahn happily admits she is “obsessed with food.” She says: “I love making it look appealing and taste great, and I love watching people enjoy eating it.” The keen chef has worked her way through programmes at levels 3 and 4, and is now preparing to study for a diploma in cookery, giving herself advanced kitchen skills. Shahn said: “I know exactly where I’m heading in the future. My ultimate dream is to own a bakery making my own cakes and pastries and pies – and I know I will do it.”

Use psychology to colour your home

C

olour choice is a big step when you’re redecorating. No matter which room - be it a home office, children’s bedroom or ensuite bathroom - the colour is going impact how that space feels in more ways than one. As you may know, colour plays an important role in the physical make up of your project. It highlights specific features, creates bold lines and shadows or flattens the ceiling and walls to create a sense of space. However, it also has psychological aspects to it. Here is a run down on how different hues can change the way you feel about a room.

Red Red is a strong, passionate colour and can have quite drastic uplifting effects on the occupants of a red-inspired space. According to colour psychologists, red helps bring people together in a room and instigates conversation. Hues like Resene Sensual Red and Resene Shiraz both bring out the energy in people, and create a powerful first impression around an entranceway. Some consider it too much for a bedroom, though that being said, its high adrenalin may still be for you. If you want red in a bedroom without going overboard, try using it on the wall behind the bed. That way you’ll get to enjoy it while you are moving around the room, but if you’re sick in bed you won’t have it keeping you awake.

Blue Entirely the opposite of its red counterpart, blue acts as a peacemaker and is a calming colour to be amongst. In fact, anyone who talks to you about feng shui will discuss how serene and freeing the colour can be. However, the choice of blue is important because the wrong tone can create negative emotions, rather than calming ones. For example, pastel blues can make a room appear cold and very dark blues can invoke a sense of sadness. Don’t avoid the colour, however, instead just focus more on mid-tones like Resene Lochmara or Resene Periglacial Blue, then scatter some warmer features to accompany.

Green Though the mere mention of green might turn some of you

away, don’t discount the colour just yet. According to feng shui, green is the ancient colour of movement and nature. It is a pleasant colour to look at and has a calming effect as well, thanks to it being a combination if blue and yellow. Used in a study, office, library or other place of work it will help stimulate restful minds within the occupants, hopefully making them a little less distracted. If you’re worried about the look of a luminous lime green, consider something more along the lines of Resene Citron, Resene Sushi, or use in small doses.

White White and off-white are great for almost any room, and instantly brighten it up and disperse hard lines and shadows, offering a sense of space and happiness. Whites like Resene Merino or Resene Half Soapstone symbolise purity, cleanliness and air, which is why they’re so good for small apartments, cramped houses and bathrooms.

Covering the entire space, however, gives some people the idea of a sterile space - maybe because hospitals and such are predominantly bright colours. White can, however, be used to effectively uplift highlights and accents instead.

Greys/Blacks As a primary colour, greys and blacks don’t always work so well by themselves, as they can give off all of the wrong impressions. For example, black instantly darkens a room as it absorbs colour, and the wrong use of grey can give the impression of fear and restraint. Used to highlight, feature or accent, however, these neutral colours are perfect. Set against a bright backdrop, such as white, black stands out perfectly and gives a sense of elegance. Grey can have a similar impact, too, though on a more subtle level. In your spaces, try defining with Resene Delta, Resene Fuscous Grey or Resene Triple Mondo. SAVVY | 19

Homeworld delivered a seamless process W

hen Ant and Nina Backhouse’s ‘I Have A Dream’ charitable trust career brought them north, the surfing family of six naturally wanted to live at the beach, so they decided to build a new home. They chose Homeworld and, now they are happily settled in their spacious Waipu Cove home with its sweeping water views, the couple will tell you the whole process was seamless. “We had a tight deadline, due to wanting to settle the kids in before they started their new schools,” says Ant, who is the CEO of the trust, which offers long-term support to children at low-decile schools to help them reach their full potential. “But Homeworld got us in on time before Christmas. Because we were based in Auckland, we weren’t around as much to oversee the build, but we had comments from the neighbours that the builders worked really hard and long hours.” This contributed towards easing the family’s anxieties, which included moving schools and making new friends. Ant and Nina have 12-year-old twins Elijah and Ely, Isaiah, 10 and Millie, 7, who have all settled into the community well. The view from the 2,000sqm section sealed the deal and, after lengthy research, Homeworld Design & Build were enlisted to take on the project. The couple felt completely comfortable dealing with Homeworld, from start to finish. The 290sqm blue/grey timber weather board-clad dwelling with ebony metro tile roof, has been built in a boomerang

shape to maximise the views and sunlight angles. As a result, the bedrooms are quirky, irregular shapes, each with their own stacker doors, leading onto the large deck, which hosts a spa pool, barbecue and entertainment area. Over the summer the family spent many occasions entertaining and showcasing their new home. Visitors are wowed by the breath-taking views as well as the stunning layout and superb quality of their new home. “We can see if the surf break is good as soon as we open the curtains,” comments Ant, with a grin. While the four bedrooms are down one end of the house, the master bedroom, complete with spacious walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, are down the other, connected by the open plan living area. Here we have the spacious, white kitchen, offset with turquoise tiling, encompassing a large island the whole family can sit at, and expansive scullery, overlooking the dining area, which has a lifted roofline to add a feeling of height. On one side of the dining area is a sitting room and the lounge is to the other, with the option of closing it off via sliding doors. “We wanted everything quite light and airy-feeling,” explains Ant, of the chosen white colour theme. However, the couple have added their own splashes of colour to the living areas – mostly in nautical colours, in keeping with their love of the ocean, while the kids too have personalised their spaces.

Protect your investment as well as your health

BY CORGI SMIT, FROM BEDS R US WHANGAREI

Buying a new bed is a big investment and should be the most expensive item of furniture in your home. We spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping and as I’ve mentioned before, a good night’s sleep is the “elixir of life”..

B

ut how do we protect this investment? In days gone by we simply placed a blanket on top of our mattress and thought this was going to give the protection it needed and what others called a mattress protector. Oh dear, those where the days… long gone, together with the milkman. The question is, how could a simple blanket protect our mattress in terms of dust mites, mildew and mould?....Well sadly, to be totally honest, it didn’t. Beds these days generally come with a 10 year manufacturers warranty and in that period of 3,650 nights, minus when you’re away from home we have to consider all the moisture our bodies give off whilst sleeping or the possible accidents that occur or the amount of skin flakes we produce, and not forgetting the times we changed our babies nappies on top of the bed…Fortunately in this day and age we have choices, like a water proof mattress protector, and no you don’t need to be incontinent to need one and its not a piece of plastic we used to place on our children’s beds when they were not fully potty trained. The fact is we lose an average of 1 litre of body fluid, as well as a million skin flakes each night! Consequently,

Furthermore, we also need to look at protecting our investment in terms of the manufacturer’s warranty. Please be aware, that if your bed has a 10 year warranty against manufacturing faults and something went wrong over this period, it is very clear that if your bed is in an unsanitary condition the manufacture reserves the right to refuse service

It is vitally important that your mattress protector is washed on a regular basis, not less that once a month. The waterproof membrane is breathable and a few of them have a TENCEL (Natural Eucalyptus based fibre) sleeping surface which will maintain an even surface temperature and is good for sensitive skin. These protectors are of course also available as pillow protectors and enjoy the same benefits. Selling your home in Winter BY ERIKA BLANK

Y

ou will have no doubt heard about how well the market in Whangarei is performing. Stock is low and yet in May alone there was 60% more residential property sold in Whangarei compared to the same time last year. Median price for Whangarei in May was $335,000 and at Bayleys our Median Price for May was $509,500! I imagine there has been no shortage of Real Estate Agents dropping flyers in your mailbox and knocking on your door. You know now is a good time to sell, you’re ready to hit the market and make the most of it, but there are still some things to do to make sure you get a premium price for your property over winter. 1 Don’t neglect the gardens Winter curb appeal is key, you won’t have the advantage of blooming flowers and luscious greenery so make sure the garden is well tended and tidy. Remove all debris and also consider potted flowering plants to add that much needed touch of colour. 2 Concentrate on lighting Winter is can be a bit darker and gloomier then usual, especially if it is raining, make sure all your light bulbs are working and as bright as possible. 3 Warmth Prospective purchaser’s focus will naturally be on how they will heat the home over winter. If you have a fire, light it or turn on that heat pump and show people how warm and cosy your home is. 4 Add some colour Brighten up the inside of your home with some coloured cushions and throws, displaying some nice bright photos of summer scenes and greenery can make a big impact on buyers during those winter months. 5 Bring forward your spring cleaning A thorough clean of the inside and outside of the home, including windows, can bring that much needed sparkle and fresh look. And of course, last but definitely not least, invest in top quality marketing and a Real Estate Agent you can trust. Selling quickly is good, but getting the best price is even better. As the old saying goes “you can’t sell a secret.” It is important to present your property in the best possible way to the largest number of people in the shortest period of time to achieve a premium result.

Adding personality into kitchens BY SARAH BURROWS

W

hangarei Kitchen and Interior designer Sarah Burrows spent five days at the prestigious Milan design fair where she got to see the latest and future trends at Eurocuchina. The kitchen is not only a place for preparing a meal, but it is a space for entertaining and socialising. Seeing the kitchen become the feature of the home, the integration of the living area needs to be carefully thought out. The classic white that Kiwis love is fading from the industry and we are now seeing black, greys and wood grains paired with metallic finishes. Pops of colour are introduced such as forest green, blues and even red. With the integration of the kitchen and living areas it is apparent that the space will take on more texture and pattern. Texture

adds interest and warmth and we are seeing this more. Open shelves were a standout at the Milan design fair and it was all about adding a little personality to the design. Handles were rare and appliances were a key element to the design. New appliances were seen and induction cooking was a strong point. Another feature was the trend of matching the horizontal surfaces with the vertical surfaces, bench tops and the cabinetry constructed out of the same material is definitely a highlight. Gloss bench tops were rarely seen and suede stone, acrylics and laminates were common. While all these things are important in the kitchen, flow, ergonomics and materials are Sarah’s top tips to getting it right. There are many regulations around kitchen design and seeking expert help is important.

f you need a bit of help finding the right kind of plants to put in your effluent field then come down and see us at Alter-Natives. We have lots of suitable plants, knowledgeable staff and a printout we can give you listing all the plants that work well.

The two main reasons for putting plants on effluent fields is to soak up excess wastewater, and to absorb nutrients so they do not get into the ground water and pollute our streams. Certain plants do this job better than others; they have a high transpiration rate, are fast growing, and are tolerant of damp soil.

CANNA LILY

One of our staff can help you with ideas to help tie the effluent field into your garden/ landscape. Another thing to think about is that not all effluent fields will be damp. E.g. a 5 bedroom house can have a large septic field engineered for up to 12 people; if there are only 2 or 3 people living in the house the field will be relatively dry. Or if you have very free draining soil (sandy) it will be quite dry as well. We generally recommend planting at 1 plant per square metre; this is for a mixed species planting using big and small plants. If you wanted to use mainly grasses then more plants would be needed, groundcovers and big trees you could use a bit less.

There are two common types of effluent field, the 1st has dripper lines on the ground surface covered with a mulch, with this sort of system you can plant any of the grasses, shrubs and big trees that we suggest in our printout. The other system has underground pipes with small seepage holes buried about 60cm below the ground surface. With this 2nd sort of system care has to be taken to put in the right type of plants. You need to avoid any trees that have masses of feeder roots, as they can damage or block the

Now this can be quite a big job so feel free to call in and see us for a quote, either for just the plants, or to take all the hassle out of it we can do the entire job for you, from designing the plant layout, to planting and mulching. Suitable plants start at only $2.40 each.

seepage holes along the pipes. Your planting can be purely practical - made up of 1 or 2 plant species and planted quickly and cheaply, or if your effluent field is going to be close to the house and very visible you can put a bit of thought and effort into it and get a great looking garden.

FOOD

There are not many places in town with this kind of atmosphere BY PHILIPPA MANNAGH - REVIEW

W

alking in to Killer Prawn you know you have met quality, professionalism and a night full of fun.

Offering a cosy atmosphere, eye-catching fairy lights hanging from the ceiling and attentive wait staff - you can’t go wrong. Eyeing up more than we could eventually manage, my dining partner and I went for one dozen of the world famous tempura prawns with honey mustard and sweet chilli dipping sauces. Personally, I am not a fan of ‘food with eyes’ but I was brave tonight and looked past the small black dots looking back at me. I knew that it would be worth it. It was. They were cooked perfectly with a crisp outer edge and hit the spot to get our appetites going, ready for more. The service was prompt and friendly, so much so it was hard to find the time to make some notes or to take a sneaky photo.

Tables of happy customers surrounded us, adding to the positive mood of the venue and credit to the busy chefs that you can see in the background, creating the masterpieces that come out piping hot. Our mains were incredible. We went for the Oceans Six - a slow cooked seafood selection of mussels, prawns, fresh fish, scallops, calamari, tuatua, vegetables, chorizo and mushroom served with turmeric rice. Also, the medium rare Lamb Rump special of the night, seasoned and chargrilled with mashed potato, green steamed vegetables and roast beetroot jus. On a cold winter’s night, this is soul food and it ticked all the boxes. For dessert, there was no room left as our mains where generous servings but… we managed to squeeze in the Creme Caramel with vanilla bean ice-cream since we couldn’t say no. It was perfect to lounge for a bit longer talking over a drink and something sweet, soaking up the atmosphere before going home to relieve the babysitter. What a fabulous dining experience!

MOTORING

Mahindra SUV for city slickers

Introducing an automatic option makes Mahindra more attractive

I

f you’re a city slicker you’d be forgiven for letting the Mahindra brand fly under the radar. The Indian marque has a strong following in rural New Zealand, but the big smoke has been problematic because of a lack of automatic models. Manuals are fine for open road driving, but they’re not as practical for city folk burdened with hours of slow-moving traffic. But now Mahindra has introduced the new mid-sized SUV XUV500 Automatic. The XUV500 — that’s pronounced XUV five double O — received a strong refresh from the previous model last year, which until now has been available with a 6-speed manual transmission. Priced from $36,990 for the front-wheel-drive XUV500, Mahindra wants its SUV to be seen as a value-for-money proposition, and it delivers. Even better, off the showroom floor, you have a three year, 100,000km warranty to cover any unforeseen problems with the vehicle. “We’re targeting 200 XUV500 sales which we think we can achieve,” said Mahindra New Zealand marketing manager Steve Vermeulen. “The first shipment of FWD XUV automatics has already sold out as well.” The exterior was designed by the Italian design firm Pininfarina, recently acquired by Mahindra. Pininfarina has given the XUV a distinct look that makes it stand out from the

“The Mahindra’s biggest selling point is the sevenseat arrangement. With many families looking for a vehicle with those extra two seats, the XUV500 and its low entry price becomes an attractive proposition.”

competition. Most obvious are the rear quarter panels, which feature swooping flares that break up the otherwise clean lines of the vehicle. These were a polarising feature for the journalists assembled at the launch but the XUV500 is distinct from other SUVs on the road. Depending on which colour your XUV is, the rear quarter panels don’t look too bad either, and particularly good in red. The Mahindra’s biggest selling point is the seven-seat arrangement. With many families looking for a vehicle with those extra two seats, the XUV500 and its low entry price becomes an attractive proposition. Each seat is wrapped in leather, the rear seats offering plenty of leg room for adults as well as ISOFIX child restraints for the littlies. The collapsible rearmost seats can take two adults in reasonable comfort, too, with enough leg room for an averagesized adult male. Back seat passengers have a climate control system which is independent of the system used in the rest of the cabin. This means there shouldn’t be any complaints from those sitting in the rear of the vehicle.

Sitting in the high-positioned driver seat, you feel like you’re in a big, safe vehicle. ANCAP rated the XUV500 as a 4-star vehicle, with Mahindra NZ management claiming it wasn’t far off that magical 5-star rating. With an easy to use 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, including satellite navigation and a smart reversing camera system, the tech side of things is nicely taken care of and is right up there with more premium manufacturers. Powering the XUV is the same 2.2-litre diesel found across the range, producing 104kW and 330Nm of torque. Though down on power compared with direct competitors, the engine makes up for this with an excellent potential fuel range of 946 km. If driving for economy doesn’t give you a buzz, the engine provides plenty of grunt on the open road for overtaking manoeuvres when called upon. “It’s not a cheap product, it’s a value-for-money product,” said Mahindra president and chief executive, Pravin Shah, who was visiting New Zealand from India for the launch. “We want to establish the brand and win the hearts and minds of consumers,” he said. With a well-priced product including that all-important automatic transmission, Mahindra will surely grow in this market.

BOOKS

The 2016 New Zealand Book Awards Finalists for Children and Young Adults have been announced. Judges deliberated over a total of 154 entries spread over six different categories:

with

ANNEMARIE FLORIAN Annemarie Florian is an Author, Librarian and Bookseller for Storytime, storytime.net.nz Allis the little tractor, by Sophie Siers and Helen Kerridge, Millwood Heritage Productions $19.95 Some lucky little tractors (especially here in Northland) get to spend their retirement years at the beach, every day in the summer tootling down to the shore and back, boat in tow. Others (less coastal, more rural) lead lonelier lives, sitting under macrocarpa trees, pining for the days when batteries were charged and tyres full of air Allis is one such tractor, an Allis Chalmers Model B, now replaced by the bigger, stronger and much younger John Deere. Thank goodness, then, for farmboy Toby, who takes her on his imaginary adventures, and then one day brings his Uncle Jack to see her… A little-engine-that-could-story, charmingly told and illustrated for beginning school and preschool.

And for each of those categories the judges will have looked out for thoughtful subjects and themes, books that allow us to investigate and think about things that matter. Good books reach out to us across time and space, allow us to enter others’ experiences, think their thoughts. What a privilege.

From the Cutting Room of Barney Kettle, by Kate De Goldi, Longacre Press $29.95 At times this novel feels like a warm-hearted, quirky film-set, -- entirely appropriate, since the story revolves around two warmhearted, quirky kids on a mission to make their very own warmhearted, quirky film. Joining them on set are a cast of supporting characters, all with their own particular talents and stories. From the outset, we get to view this High Street (inner-city Christchurch) world through camera-fresh eyes, panning across each finely-wrought detail; the mood then building to mystery and ultimately, horrendous tragedy. A rich, perplexing, cleverly immersive read-aloud, especially for the intermediate years, but ultimately for anyone who wants to be reminded of the strength and wonder of community. Junior Fiction (Esther Glen Award) Finalist

Hucking Cody, by Aaron Topp, Mary Egan Publishing $24.95 Cody is obsessed with mountain biking – free-riding. When he’s flying down bushlined tracks and hitting stunts on his bike, he feels truly free. This book’s all action. It feels like you’re there, hitting ramps, risking tricks, pumping pedals as hard and fast as you can. Along the bumpy way you also learn about Cody’s life – crushes and crashes, friendships and concerns. A realistic read with a team of authentically imperfect teen characters. Young Adult Fiction Finalist

Much Ado About Shakespeare, by Donovan Bixley, Upstart Press $34.95

Picture Book Finalist

Whose Beak is This? by Gillian Candler and Fraser Williamson, Potton and Burton $14.95pap, $24.95HB 11 of our native bird species are profiled here, by focusing on their beaks, each adapted for distinctive habits and habitats. Candler’s thorough and thoughtful approach is refreshing, revealing. She has previously been responsible for the Explore and Discover series and this title is similarly packed with intriguing information, in a fun and original treatment. Further enhanced by Williamson’s sharp and vibrant illustrative style. A great resource, particularly accessible for the very young. Non-Fiction (Elsie Locke Award) Finalist

BOOKS

- Picture Book - Junior Fiction (Esther Glen Award) - Young Adult Fiction - Non-Fiction (Elsie Locke Award) - Illustration (Russell Clark Award) - Te Reo Maori (Te Kura Pounamu Award)

WHITI TE RA! by Patricia Grace and Andrew Burdan, translated by Kawata Teepa, Huia Publishers $24.95 Ka Mate! Ka Mate! This haka has become recognizable around the world through the performances of our sports teams and other distinctively Kiwi gatherings. But what do we really know about it? Who first uttered this chant? How did it come about and how was it recorded and passed down from generation to generation? This sophisticated picture book tells the story of how Ngati Toa chief, Te Rauparaha, came to compose the haka, ‘Ka Mate, Ka Mate’. Like the haka itself, it is an invigorating story, deftly told, with dark and evocative illustrations. A beautiful, uplifting and welcome resource. Te Reo Maori (Te Kura Pounamu Award) Finalist/Picture Book Finalist in English.

Original and captivating, this book is a revelation. Each stage of Shakespeare’s life is divulged through a combination of appropriately sly, vividly detailed artwork, notable quotes and clever commentary. Bixley’s approach is never solemn, but colourful, exuberant, insightful. It will change forever your view of Shakespeare and his times, and give you a thoroughly new appreciation for “a great man with that real human connection, so apparent in his plays”. Methinks the bard himself might have bestowed his avowed approval! Illustration (Russell Clark Award) Finalist

ARTS

K

eep an eye out in July as WAM celebrates its 20th Birthday...and we are having a celebration. Until then we have been busy... The Whangarei Art Museum has shifted its strategic focus toward community and visitor engagement with our new Director Ruth Green-Cole. We have initiated exciting key projects for our visitors and arts community. The Whangarei Art Museum is aware that being situated behind the i-SITE means that many of the Whangarei community do not know where we are located. And yet we do get found, perhaps were a hidden treasure – a gem in the city. As part of increasing visibility and engagement and to mark WAMs 20th anniversary - we are planning to re-brand the Whangarei Art Museum to better meet the needs of the community and the facility for the future. Some longer term planning will need to happen to combat the street frontage issue however in the interim WAM has developed some short term external signage around The Hub. Despite our hidden location, WAMs visitor numbers are sitting at 11,346 for the end of May and by the end of June 2016 they are expected to be 12,000 for the year. This is a 25%

20th Birthday and more

increase on last year’s actual visitor numbers of 8840. The significant growth in visitor numbers to date is in part due to strong focus on exhibiting Northland artists. WAM continues to develop engaging public programs, events and venue hire opportunities to encourage you to come and visit, learn and enjoy the art experiences on offer at the Whangarei Art Museum. An important community initiative is the development of our education space. WAM are using this space to build an operational and sustainable education programme. We look forward to working with other educational organisations in Northland as well as delivering workshops in conjunction with WAM exhibitions. Some things you could look out for are our short courses in Taonga conservation, art appreciation classes, practical art workshops and family focused activities. Our new community gallery space has been developed to showcase art and exhibitions that are in collaboration with our community. This is a pop-up/temporary gallery which provides an accessible space for community based exhibitions and projects. This space is booking out fast and community groups and emerging artists should download

a proposal form from our website or collect a hard copy at the front desk. The current community exhibition on display until the 17th of July is the Rembrandt Remastered exhibition. The touring exhibition is on display at Reyburn House and Whangarei Art Museum and is hosted by Rotary South Whangarei and their leading sponsors. The community gallery space also provides an effective, efficient and economical format for showcasing the art collection on a rotating basis. This allows for different collection pieces to be viewed more frequently and enable art works to rest for conservation purposes. Caring for the art collection is one of the core functions of the gallery. One of our goals is to have the whole collection accessible online and of that the Drummond and Te Wake collection is underway. You will now be able to do your own search and request a reproduction. The art collection is preserved for the benefit, enjoyment and education of Whangarei residents. With all these wonderful things going on at your public art gallery you might like hunt out your city’s treasure.
