health While I wasn’t keen to put myself on the front cover, I did talk my mum into it – my daughter was up for it – and don’t they look adorable! We now have some delightful and special portraits to grace our walls with and pass down through the generations. You can read about our experience in the lead-up to Mother’s Day on page 6. Our lead story is about a local mum who has had an extraordinary journey. She is a mother to four children with one of them now an angel. Losing her child was only one of a string of tragedies and, after each incident, this courageous woman just picks herself up and carries on. Not only that, but the talented artist is using her experiences to help others suffering from grief. Creating art from tragedy Julia Tapp exudes warmth and positivity. But hers is a story that would bring many to their knees. She shares her extraordinary journey with Jodi Bryant.

ulia Tapp was in the midst of painting an angel portrait for a father who’d lost his baby daughter when her own wee son drowned. The kind-hearted multiple-awardwinning Whangarei artist had answered his online plea for someone to paint his baby without the attached tubes when her own tragedy struck. The painting was put on hold and Julia, instead, turned to the father for support. Later that year, by chance, she met another dad whose daughter had died at 38 weeks gestation and who only had one ‘rather confronting’ image of her. “I must admit, I was taken aback a bit but I took a second look and saw that her eyes and ears, mouth and nose were all in the same place and it was only the deterioration. I said to the dad, ‘I can do this for you, I can ﬁx up her skin’ so I restored all her skin and

gave the painting to them.” Julia then ﬁnished off the ﬁrst painting and did another ten Angel Portraits over the following year before she was able to paint her son Ezra; She got up at 4am and painted until 2pm that day. Ezra, or ‘Ezee-bear’ as his family called him, was born with severe autism and always had an attraction to water. One day in 2014, the free-spirited three-year-old escaped out the front gate and travelled 200m before he was found by his dad Jason 27 minutes later in the Ohinemuri River. Paramedics worked on him for half an hour but, as Julia and Jason held their son’s little body on the river bank singing his favourite song: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, the news was delivered that their boy would not be coming home. “There are no words to describe those moments or how fast it happened,” says Julia,

34. “Everyone tried their best to save him but he was already gone.” They returned to the house where Ezra’s siblings had already heard the news via the gathering press. The harrowing weeks that followed were every parent’s nightmare, coupled with the fact the family were hounded by media. But rather than let the tragedy bring their family down, a strong and positive Julia had other plans. “I know the death of a child destroys families so my husband and I made an agreement. We moved through our grief in different stages and we decided that we could have our space to grieve but not completely shut the other out. For example, you could shut yourself in a room and cry but not lock the door. If someone needed to take a walk, they had to take their phone with them and be contactable. The other rule was to always be truthful with our feelings, even if it hurts the other person. “If anything, Jason and I are growing closer and, since losing our son, we always come back to that moment. Nothing could be as hard as that day. It becomes a new comparison in life.” And they’ve had a lot to compare it to – the

At 19, a newly-single Julia was living in Whangarei at the home she had shared with her boyfriend when her house burnt down. “I had left the tv running for about three days for the comforting light and noise and was sleeping on the couch when the tv caught fire at 3am. I had an alarm but, being 19 and pretty silly, it didn’t have batteries. It was actually my cat who woke me up. “Being a free-spirited person, I thought ‘Right, my house is gone, I’ve always wanted to live in Hamilton, there’s nothing stopping me’ so I put out my thumb and hitched to Hamilton,” laughs the bubbly mum. “That was the first time I’ve had to re-build my life … it’s happened a few times.” It was there Julia found out she was pregnant. “I worked waiting tables and didn’t have a bed so used to pile all my clothes by the fire and sleep on that while (baby) Zoe slept in a drawer.” Meanwhile, with a strong interest in performing arts, Julia started an entertainment company and trained and performed as a fire dancer, drummer and stilt walker and was joined by belly dancers and face painters and ‘before we knew it, we had a circus’.

y nana was the type who lined the hall with framed family photographs. The conglomeration that, when finally removed, left rectangular outlines where the wall paper hadn’t faded. As a child, I would stand and marvel – especially at the portraits of nana. I would stare at her captured youth, searching for resemblances in the porcelain, unlined skin. They were there in the same kind smile and twinkly, pale blue eyes and the grace with which she held herself. These days, silly selfies just aren’t the same and, although I lean more towards minimisation on the hallway-front, had decided a nice, regal photo for my grandchildren to compare with vestiges of their wrinkly granny, would be grand. A milestone birthday this year prompted me into action, coupled with spotting a series of timely and lovely generational portrait posts on my social media timeline by Sarahlee Studio. I decided to not delay – already we had missed my nana by a few years and the pampering and posing would have been right up her alley! My mum Jan, on the other hand, is a tad shy and needed a bit of convincing but my daughter Jayla, like most nine-yearold girls, was all for it. We met Sarahlee at her studio on Rust Ave for a styling consultation first. She was very welcoming and we sat on the plush couch and discussed what we had in mind. She advised us to think of colours that would compliment each other for our group shots (no easy task when your favourite colour is magenta and your mum and daughter are red heads!) and to try and steer clear of bold prints that would portray the era. Timeless was the aim. On the day, we excitedly hauled our bags of clothes and accessories into the studio. Even mum had come round

and was looking forward to a morning of pampering and spending time with her family. The team were waiting to greet us as we arrived and were also in good spirits. They were the lovely Danelle Knight of Style Plus Hair Design and Kasey George Makeup Artist. After the ‘Before’ photo, the team discussed the look we would like before getting to work with our transformation. We soon relaxed into our pamper session, surrounded by friendly morning banter, while Sarahlee was busy hanging the outﬁts and preparing the photo sessions to ensure it ran smoothly. During this time, she would also pick up a video camera to discreetly ﬁlm snippets of our experience to later create a personalised video.

Next it was time to don our first ensemble. We had decided golden, bronze hues would suit mum and Jayla’s colouring and I always love an excuse to bust out a little bling so we went for these shades in our group shots, along with that best friend to many a red head – green! It does feel awkward posing for photos. One never knows how to stand or where to put their hands. But Sarahlee directed us into poses that flatter, often getting into poses herself and making it seem natural. We underwent several outfit changes and were definitely getting into the swing of things. For a bit of fun, I donned a gold flapper dress and, with wind in my hair, performed a bit of a shimmy. With my mum and daughter peeking and giggling around the corner we were all laughing. Even Jayla forgot her shyness and was soon dancing and skipping around the studio. It was a lovely bonding experience and we decided to follow it with a girls lunch out. After-all, we couldn’t just go home that glammed up!

Describing herself as an ‘Obsessive Compulsive Creative’, Sarahlee’s focus on modern glamour portraits stems from her belief that being ‘photogenic’ is a myth. “Anyone can have beautiful portraits. Cover girls on magazines need a team of people to look that good and we are that team for the day. It really is a transformation inside and out. With a skilled photographer, the most camera-shy people will just light up and feel and look incredible. The most important thing to me is that they enjoy every moment of it. “I get to show someone a side of themselves they have never seen before. I create legacies and want to create images that, not only give you conﬁdence every time you look at them, but you are proud to pass on to the next generation.”

A new way of eating helps you burn fat

Many of the multitude of health benefits of IF are related to changes in hormones, gene expression and improved functioning of cells. With IF, you simply restrict the hours you eat each day rather than what you eat. No conscious ‘dieting’ required! The simplest version of this way of eating is to eat just two meals a day in an eight- hour window. For example the first being around 11-1pm and the second around 6-8pm. There is no restriction of food groups or macronutrients which many mainstream weight loss type diets require leaving you constantly craving for what you can’t have. Once you get used to it, it’s really easy to stick to as hunger is not an issue from reports of people who eat this way. IF is not a diet, it’s a pattern of eating. It’s a way of scheduling your meals that doesn’t change what you eat but when you eat. You can choose between having breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner, but avoid having both breakfast and dinner. While typical diets often yield lackluster results replete with weight regain, practicing IF fosters sustainable, automatic fat burning than typical calorie-restricted diets despite similar calorie intakes! In fact, most of the time you will be keeping your calories the same but you will be eating bigger meals during a shorter time frame. You will love the simplicity of this type of eating. Eating two meals a day allows you to eat one less meal, which also means planning one less meal, cooking one less meal and stressing about one less meal. It makes life a bit simpler and that is a good thing. Perhaps most importantly, IF is one of the simplest strategies we have for taking fat weight off while keeping good weight on (muscle tissue) because it requires very little behaviour change. It falls into the category of ‘simple enough that you’ll actually do it, but meaningful enough that it will actually make difference.’ Given the known benefits for metabolism and all sorts of health markers, it makes sense that IF could help you live a longer and healthier life.

t’s no secret that typical calorie restriction to lose weight tends to be miserably unsustainable. Most people who use this method end up binging or consuming low-calorie ‘frankenfoods’ in an attempt to ﬁll an ever-expanding ravenous black hole. But what if I told you there was a way to indulge without restriction while stoking the ﬁres of your metabolism, boosting energy, saying goodbye to cravings, and likely losing even more weight than with typical dieting? This new way is a type of scheduled eating plan where you simply restrict your normal daily eating to a 6-8 hour window of time without cutting calories. This type of scheduled eating was practiced by our ancestors, since they did not have the frequent access to food that we have now.

Dangers of buying your gown online In this day and age, a young person can ﬁnd almost anything online - from snack food, to brand new laptops and cellphones.

ut when it comes to one of the most exciting purchases of a young woman’s life - a dress for her school formal - fashion retailers advise teens to think twice before clicking the ‘checkout’ button. With ball season going strong and with sites selling evening and cocktail dresses constantly appearing on the internet, many girls are choosing to buy their ball gowns online - often for under $200. However, specialists say they are hearing from countless young women ending up with dresses that are ill-fitting, poorly-constructed and often made from low-quality materials, making them difficult to alter. Dress retailer Rebecca Waldron said she is constantly serving girls whose dream dresses have turned out to be anything but. “Girls come in and tell all kinds of horror stories,” said Mrs Waldron. “They’ve bought their dresses in what they thought was their size, and they don’t fit properly at all. What they’re buying from those sites doesn’t match what they see in the photo. It’s really disappointing for them.

Most people think that a site that ends in .com or .co.nz is legit, but that does not mean it is from New Zealand or the US Without trying it on, they’re taking a big risk.” Fellow dressmaker Carolyn Henson said business has ‘dropped dramatically’ for her since girls started buying ball gowns on the internet. However, the number of clients asking for alterations to their online bargains has skyrocketed. “I am altering more dresses this year than ever before,” said Mrs Henson. “Those dresses are not made to measure. You send your measurements, and they select something similar to your measurements. So chances are they will need major alterations.” Mrs Henson said she most often has to take in dresses that are ‘way too big’, putting panels into dresses that are several

sizes too small. However, she said, some dresses simply cannot be altered. “I had one girl who bought three dresses online to get the right one.” Dress designer Rasha Taylor said she receives ‘around ﬁve calls a week’ from girls that have ended up with ‘a gloriﬁed rubbish sack’ for a ball gown. She said New Zealand has become a target for international online dress scammers who peddle poorly-made replicas of designer wedding, evening and cocktail dresses using New Zealand domain names. “Most people think that a site that ends in .com or .co.nz is legit, but that does not mean it is from New Zealand or the US,” said Mrs Taylor. “Countless scam sites disguise themselves as Western businesses.” She mentions one ‘New Zealand’ site which is registered in Hong Kong. “They are an agent that has multiple factories they

They are not qualitycontrolled.” She said one of the biggest problems for New Zealanders buying from offshore sites is they are not covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act, and thus have no rights of return or refund. Therefore, they undergo the costly process of having their gowns altered - a service Mrs Taylor does not offer. “Many of the online ball dress disasters I have seen would require so much work to ﬁx that the customer is far better off buying a whole new dress,” she said.

GOING OUT WITH A BANG

Excitement on the horizon for long time Afare owner, Mandy Edge. Mandy Edge, wellknown owner of Afare for the last 37 years has something exciting to announce, yet she has struggled with sharing the news. It was a mix of emotions when her long - time business sold and she explains this new chapter in her life as bittersweet. It took three days to build up courage before Mandy could break the news to her core group of staff. She credits a great deal of her success to having hired the best staff for the job over the years and their close relationships. They have experienced many milestones together over the years. Mandy could trust that everything would get done and to the highest standard whether she was there or away. Tears and ﬂoods of messages from the girls came as a surprise when the news broke and Mandy felt humbled reading that she had taught them a lot in life and that she was a mentor to them all. “Thank you for what you have done for us and the community. You’ll always be my biggest mentor in life no matter what,” said Hayley Corney. Another core staff member, Ayla Hawkins sent, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me Mandy over the years. It really means a lot to me.”

WHERE TO FROM HERE? In true Mandy fashion, she won’t be putting her feet up for quite some time. Alongside her new parttime job during daylight hours and opening an upmarket air bed and breakfast near the city, she will be busy training to qualify for the World Championships in August. Spending more time with Stuart will also be high on the agenda, something that was always a juggle owning a successful business and raising a family. Twenty years into the business, Mandy worked right up to the birth of her daughter, Rachyl and she came everywhere with her. Often known to be having a nap in a closet while service continued, Mandy’s commitment to Afare and the love for her clients is admirable. Many of these dear clients will clearly remember these moments of her journey. For this reason, she has gone to each of them to say goodbye. “That’s just my way. I just want to say a big thank you to my family, the staff and my clients. I couldn’t have done it without them,” she says. Her family always surrounded her with support especially in the early days and when catering large events across town. Such as catering for 750 people, a la carte for the Forestry Awards. “We booked the kitchens out all over town, 35 staff on the floor and 10 in the kitchen. Everything was down to the last five minutes,” she says, “we started a week before, giving the girls tasks each day and pulling family in.” Switching off is strange for Mandy at this stage, realising that she has nothing to worry about and check in on. At first she couldn’t sleep, “I was always up at 5:30 am to fit training in around business and first at work,” she says. Mandy had set the standards high, always ensuring the work cars were washed each week whether they were clean or dirty and the smart uniform, which changed every six months, was one to be proud of. Her values were always clear, a high expectation of customer service, respect and trust. Everything was a team effort and a discussion between the girls, so everybody felt involved in decision making. The new owner, Jason Olliver from Spit Roast in Christchurch has employed a new Manager, Nicki Knier to oversee the business and plans to hold off changing something that is working so well in the community. Sitting at the waterfront cafe in the sun, looking ahead to all the possibilities, Mandy says with a satisfied smile upon her face, “It’s time to go out with a bang, it’s time for us to live a little!”

Ros Capper wished there was a handbook when she found herself in the role of caring for her terminally-ill husband for three years. So, in a bid to guide and support others in that situation, she penned her own.

he Accidental Carer was published last year as a result of Ros’ experience caring for husband Mike while he had cancer. “It’s accidental because no one plans to be a carer I wouldn’t think,” explains Ros. “I noticed all the written material out there was not written by people who had done it, it’s written by professionals who have watched someone do it.” After being delivered the news that Mike was terminally-ill, the couple went home with a lot of questions. “One of our questions was: if it’s a shortened life, and we don’t know how short, how do we make the most of now?” One way to do that was by having their then four-year-old granddaughter Minna stay overnight each week. “She taught us a lot about staying with the ‘now’, just by being a four-year-old and, often if I was thinking about the past or the future, not in a helpful way, Minna would come up with a ‘Knock-knock joke.” They also prioritised what really mattered to them, while creating happy memories, based on favourite things and people. But Ros was noticing the lack of help for carers like herself. “Approximately 25,000 new people each year are going to be carers. Mine was palliative care which, by its nature, is temporary but a lot of people are having their lives hugely impacted all the time. “When your family member is given an end of life diagnosis, you’re starting from scratch and this was unexpected to me, as it is to most people, so you’re starting an enquiry really to ﬁnd out what this is about and how can I engage with it well? And, of course, our medical system is set up for the person who is unwell.” She began taking notes and was introduced to a research team at the University of Auckland, who were impressed by her writing and asked how they could help. She subsequently joined their Te Arai Palliative Care and End of Life Research Group as a co-researcher and the group supported Ros to write her practical guide. It was presented at an international palliative care conference in Madrid, followed by Ottawa and quickly gathered momentum. The book, features the stories of ﬁve people, including Ros, as they undergo the emotional and physical challenges

Written in accessible English, it also includes practical ideas for people in the community to help those who are sick and to support the carers. “People are uneasy around illness and they don’t want to get it wrong – the result can be isolation, both for the ill person and the carer.” One of her key learnings was reaching out for support and being speciﬁc about the kind of help needed. As a result, friends would cook meals, others took Mike to appointments or sat with him while he listened to his favourite opera music.

“Sometimes they were people to call on for conversations that matter. I did get tired and overwhelmed over the three years so gradually, it came to me to reach our more and more.” Towards the end, Ros says she and Mike fell in love again. “Mike wasn’t sleeping so well – well we both weren’t – so round about 5.30am, I’d be sitting by his bed and the birds would be starting for the day and we began to reminisce about the good times we had. As these best times came to mind, we did fall in love again, which is wonderful.”

So we need to take things slowly with them and make sure that they are comfortable in their new surroundings. The first thing you want to do is ensure you have the right equipment for the settling in period. Talk to your local pet store to ensure you are fully-equipped for this new adventure! For the first night, make sure your feline is confined to a safe space like a laundry or a bathroom with a litter tray. If they are given the run of the house right away they can have toileting errors in unwanted areas of the house. Remind children of ground rules around your new cat or kitten. Remind them not to startle him or her and to keep the door shut until they are settled. If they don’t eat too much for the first day or two, don’t be too concerned as this is normal behaviour when they are a little nervous and should get back to normal eating habits as it settles. Find a treat they like as this comes

in handy when trying to get them back inside once they start exploring. Introducing your kitten to another pet family member is a very important part of settling in. It is important that you don’t change your existing pet’s world too much as you want them to not feel threatened. Dogs tend to accept new kittens faster than cats as cats are not fans of sudden change so take your time to introduce them slowly and positively with treats and lots of love to make them know everything is ok. As your feline friend adjusts, he or she will show signs of wanting to explore outside of their safe haven. Make sure pets or other family members don’t startle them as they explore this new territory. And do it in small doses, with the use of a kitten harness or just simply carrying your kitten around with you initially before letting them down. Provide your cat with a scratching post that is tall enough for them to extend themselves to scratch. Encourage them to use it by sprinkling catnip or dangling a toy at the top. Your furniture will love you for it!

Decorating inspiration for living rooms

he living room often functions as a hub of activity for your home, especially when blessed with sight lines to the kitchen, so it makes sense to make it one of the comﬁest and most up-to-date rooms in the house. Whether you favour bold and modern or traditional and cosy, keeping an on-trend living space will spruce up your entire home and prevent staleness. Look to the coming trends for inspiration – it’s full force with bold patterns, natural palettes and faux ﬁnishes. Greys, charcoals and navy blues are stepping up and replacing black in urbane navy/white combos and navy or charcoal accent walls. “We are seeing living rooms with darker walls, creating drama and depth–colours like Resene Foundry, a shadowy charcoal full of warmth, or Resene Half Bokara Grey, a burnt bituminous charcoal,” says Resene colour consultant Jill Marsh.“Another colour being used is Resene Indian Ink, a stunning blackened blue – quite often used just on one wall.” 22 | SAVVY

While darker hues have seen a rise in popularity, don’t eschew whites just yet. These ‘safer’colours still command a place in the modern home. Inky blues go with almost any colour and pair well with crisp, white trims and white architectural details. Resene Foundry, Resene Dark Side and Resene Regatta, all inky blues, are proving popular, adding richness and depth to rooms. Colour consultant and interior designer Debbie Abercrombie is also seeing a trend towards darker hues. “Navy is playing a very strong part in our interiors, from the greyed off shades in paints covering whole walls for a sophisticated depth and anchoring background, to fabrics with strong navy patterns and textures,” she says.“Team it with vibrant greens to give a fresher look or explore shades of ochre to give a more grounded and elegant look.” Either way, she says, navy is sharp, effective and ﬂexible.“It is timeless and current at the same time.”

Statement sofas or armchairs in navy velvets are also popping up, offering classic and regal touches. It’s part of a trend for tactile, textural fabrics, enticing homeowners and visitors to touch and engage and experience ultimate comfort. Fabric manipulation and ﬁne tailoring of plush velvet is ever present, including pleated, folded and tufted designs. Alongside navy paints and fabrics, earthy hues are beginning to dominate colour schemes. “We are seeing lots of natural linen fabrics for curtains and cushions,” says Jill. “Dark grey carpets have been very popular, but we are now seeing more sandy shades and mid-range colours.” Bright green is proving to be a must this season as well. Climbing plants and shrubbery are currently popular ways to

flaunt this colour trend. But look for bold botanical prints in wallpapers, too. The trends are continuing along a natureinspired path. Butterflies are flittering about everywhere.Wallpaper, drapery and artwork feature these winged beauties – and they’re hard to ignore. They are no longer designated to children’s rooms alone – they take on a more sophisticated look with high-end designers incorporating butterflies into their collections. The mixing of different patterns will be more tolerated this year. Stripes and fleurs-de-lis may be seen on walls together. Accent pillows and rugs may be mismatched as well – think green polka

lthough they have a bad rap for being messy (Any heavy flowering plant with masses of gorgeous blooms is going to be a wee bit messy at the end of flowering), camellias flower reliably and heavily, year after year with little attention. Even dense, older trees can be revitalised and made more elegant by thinning out branches and pruning ‘so a bird can fly through’. Their flowers are like the roses of winter and there is no doubting the beauty of camellia flowers. They have many different shapes, colours and perfumes. But in a world not short of spectacular blooms, camellias offer so much more. As tough evergreen shrubs with attractive foliage, camellias provide structure and substance to the garden all year round and can be grown with ease in a wide range of climates. When they’re not in flower, camellias make an attractive plain green backdrop for other plants. They’re adaptable to a huge range of landscape uses and fit any size or style of garden. Camellias make good dense hedges; ‘Setsugekka’ is a popular sasanqua often planted as a hedge, use ‘Paradise Joan’ if you’re after a rich Watermelon red with gold stamens, and, with its slow dense growth,

INGREDIENTS 2 Tbsp Butter, for greasing ramekins 1 Tbsp Butter ½ medium Onion, finely diced 1 clove Garlic, finely diced 1 bag Baby spinach ½ cup Cream 400 g Smoked salmon, we used Regal Cold Smoked 4 large Eggs 1 serving Bread, of your choice, toasted DIRECTIONS • Set oven to 200°C. Grease 4 ramekins with first measure of butter. • Heat butter in a medium pan, add the onion and garlic and cook until soft and translucent. This should take 3-4 minutes. • Add the spinach and cook until wilted. Add the cream and reduce by half until the sauce has thickened slightly. Season to your liking. • Arrange the ramekins in a shallow baking tray and divide spinach evenly among them, followed by the cold smoked salmon. • Make a small dent in the middle of each ramekin and crack an egg into it. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until the egg whites are just set. Serve with buttered toast.

The oldest, a huge fan of pasta and with a typical huge pre-teen appetite, ordered the Fried Beef River (beef fried rice noodle) and even he could hardly make a dent in it. His verdict: “Very spectacular dish.” Miss Nine, with a much smaller appetite, ordered the Sweet Corn and Chicken Soup and enjoyed spooning rice and mixing it from the large bowl we ordered. “Yum!” she declared. Master Seven ordered the Garlic Roasted Pork Ribs, which I was eyeing up and eventually tried – delicious – and Master Nine’s eyes almost popped out of his head when a whole ﬁsh arrived on a plate. He had ordered the Pine Nuts Deep Fried Whole Blue Cod and enjoyed picking off all the nuts but I’m not sure he knew what to do with the rest of it! It didn’t matter because several spoonfuls in, came the “Mum, I’m full!” from round the table.

any of us associate the red building on lower Bank St as the King Dragon but it is now called Sun Wah Chinese Restaurant. I was asked to review it during school holidays so it was a family affair. The kids have been learning Chinese at school so were only too happy to try out their new lingo while having a treat dining out. My memory doesn’t stretch far enough to remember the décor from the ﬁrst time I visited this restaurant on a school trip in the 1980s but I’m guessing there are still some original features. The large wall hanging depicting an Asian village kept the kids entertained as they carried out their own rendition of ‘Where’s Wally’. “Spot the baby”, “Spot the man in the hut”. Meanwhile, a water feature, complete with gold ﬁsh trickled in the background, along with soft music. Our two waitresses were attentive and informative, explaining the menu and popular dishes. They giggled when Master Nine called out “xiexie” (thank you) when his drink was delivered and smiled patiently every time he insisted on calling it out thereafter.

I liked the way the kids’ meals were brought out first and ours were straight after: the Sweet n Sour Pork with Pineapple. This was a definite hit and no ordinary sweet n sour pork. It was purchased at the show by Robert McDougall, a well-known Christchurch biscuit and confectionery maker (Aulsebrooks) who also donated the money to build the McDougall

art gallery in Christchurch. Robert McDougall used the car after the show to tour extensively around the USA. Before returning to New Zealand, he decided to replace his left-hand drive 900 with a right-hand drive version, but was told that no car of this style was available. The Packard factory then offered (no doubt with a ﬁnancial encouragement) to change his present car to right-hand drive. This done, in spring 1932 the car was shipped to New Zealand. Graeme purchased the vehicle in 1975 and was the fourth owner. It is one of our rarest cars and reputedly the only right-hand drive Packard 900 in the world.

Mother’s Day: My mum versus Tupac’s mum BY MICHAEL BOTUR

The Northland Arts Centre opens its doors today, making a Whangarei mum’s dream a reality.

ulia Tapp returned to Whangarei last year and, with husband Jason, has created a space in central Whangarei offering art, craft and performance classes, as well as grief classes to help with healing. Julia is an internationally award-winning artist 17 times over, specialising in photo realism via air brushing, particularly custom portraiture. Her canvas’ also include vehicles, faces and bodies, shoes and handbags, to name a few and, as well as portraits, her subject range includes wildlife, fantasy and classical. Julia and her musician husband previously ran a performance school so the centre will also offer lessons in rainbow and black light poi - leading onto fire dancing, music and singing. Julia plans to hold grief classes once a month and, while she says she is not a trained therapist, she is qualified as both an artist and teacher and has the personal experience to prove that art can help overcome grief. The couple lost their three-year-old autistic son in a horrific accident several years ago and believe his passing has gifted them the strength to help other families living with grief and special needs. “My vision is to provide a safe place where people can learn, express and create and deal or help heal from any grief or barrier that they might be facing. We have found so much healing in the arts, we want to share this passion with the community.” Her classes, accommodating ten, cater for school holiday programmes, night classes, teens and youth – ‘They can pimp their own sneakers or skateboard decks’, students with disabilities and the elderly. Many of the classes are at a reduced rate or free, funded by the custom art classes. A merchandise shop at the front, also helps sustain the art centre, and provides resources used in the classes, many of which are imported. However, Julia is a fan of upcycling – her shop at 10 John St is adorned with creations she has made from egg cartons and light shades, to name a few – and she encourages donations. “I get donations of buttons, string, all sorts. There’s no specific list we can make art out of.” The Tapps are now at the end of their personal funding and require another $10,000 to finish their dream. They are hoping for back-up funding from organisations and donations and have set up a crowdfunding page to give the centre its final boost (Givealittle: N.Z child loss support & creative arts therapy). Another exciting plan in the pipeline is to bring the ‘Feeling Fab’ Auckland pamper days for those suffering loss or abuse, to Whangarei. “I was one of the ones being pampered and now I’m on the voluntaring crew,” says Julia. “I am working with the Auckland team to make this happen as an addition to the arts and grief centre and free to the community. “It is a big vision but big visions become reality with a little support. I have trained for this (arts centre) for eight years now and it’s our moment to shine and show the world that, no matter what happens, you can overcome it and rise above the challenge.”

upac Amaru Shakur didn’t have the best judgement in life. He went to jail for something really nasty, wielded a baseball bat during a fight at his own concert, and was named after violent terrorists. There’s one thing he got right, though: respect for his mummy. Now, my mum doesn’t resemble Tupac’s mum, at first glance. The differences are subtle but distinct. For example, Tupac’s mum was an African American radical who hung out with terrorists, whereas my mum is a British doctor and weekend gardener who enjoys Ruth Rendell and Shaun The Sheep. All mamas show love for their sons in different ways. For example, Tupac’s mum stopped smoking crack for her son; my mum shows her love by ironing my undies.
