Adventure Forest
Nested in the beautiful Glenbervie Forest, on the way to Tutukaka Coast, Adventure Forest park is an established family-operated adventure activity. We’ve asked the owners, Francoise and Francois, what makes it so special: “When we design a course, we always have in mind what we dreamed as children and what we want as parents. The result has to be a fun and thrilling, challenging and safe experience. What is really magic at Adventure Forest is that while being an organised and supervised adventure, it allows participants to go by themselves on the courses. Once harnessed up and briefed about safety by our instructors, each group or family chooses the levels they want to tackle, and goes on their own, at their own pace, for a very personal adventure up in the trees.” Can everybody do it? “Sure! There are circuits for all ages and abilities. Two of them, Tamariki and Bambino, are especially for kids from 3 to 6 years old; they are designed so kids can be assisted from the ground. The other courses are for children and adults, each circuit goes higher and gets harder. With 10 levels of increasing challenge, even the most dare-devil acrobats will be tested! There are countless different obstacles, tight ropes, wobbly bridges, Tarzan swing, flying stirrup, spider’s web, canopy skate to name a few, and of course, lots of zip-lines or Flying Foxes. Children and parents can participate side by side, we often have three generations of the same family challenging each other on the courses!” What about safety? “This is our top priority. We do comply with Adventure Activities regulations and are fully
06 summer sizzle northland
registered with WorkSafe. The park undergoes several independent safety inspections each year and staff are trained to best industry standards. Our safety commitment goes beyond meeting the legal requirements: for example, we were the first adventure park in New Zealand to implement a continuous lifeline system in 2012. This system ensures participants remain attached at all times.” Tips and quick facts: Easy access from SH1: from Whangarei follow the signs Tutukaka Coast / Whangarei Falls, and turn into Maruata Rd 4 km after the Falls. Free car park on site. Prices: $27 child and $37 adult, very affordable for a big day out. Discounts available for families of 4 persons or more, and groups of 10 persons or more. Duration: allow at least 3 hours to enjoy the full experience, but there is no time limit; you can bring your picnic!

Buskers add to the atmosphere and great coffee is always available. Come on up and relax with us soon!
“For as long as people have walked this land and sailed these waters, the area around the Town Basin, Te Ahipupurangi-a-ihenga, has been a vital hub. Waka gathered there in the earliest days, right beside Parihaka, reputedly the largest pa site in the country.” Take a stroll AH Reed Kauri Park & Whangarei Falls Take a couple of hours to meander the walk between the Park and the waterfall which follows the Hatea River. You will cross by footbridge, fresh water swimming holes and wonderful grassed picnic spots. Whangarei Subtropical Quarry Gardens A subtropical climate and unique microenvironment enables a stunning collection of subtropical and arid plants, camellias and bromeliads to thrive.

The drive along the Whangarei Heads is one of the most scenic road trips imaginable with pohutukawa fringed bays, volcanic outcrops, everchanging waterscapes and, just another stunning view around every corner.
FAMILY FUN
The Bream Head Scenic Reserve of Whangarei Heads is classified as an outstanding ecosystem which supports a diversity of species, contains unique archaeological, historical and landscape features. Backyard Kiwi is a project that celebrates the partnership between the kiwi and people of Whangarei Heads ensuring that predator control, kiwi monitoring, landowner liaison and engagement, carries on to keep our kiwi population alive and growing.
With the sheltered beaches of the Whangarei Harbour on one side, the sweep of the Pacific Ocean on the other, some of the best walks you’ll ever do and dotted with artists’ studios & exhibitions, taking some time out in this wonderland is a must do. Parua Bay offers excellent trailer boat launching facilities – giving you easy access to great fishing and diving inside the Whangarei Harbour, or motor outside the harbour to Bream Bay or north up the coast.
Kids enjoying fishing from the wharf
MCLEOD BAY Safe swimming, a children’s playground and picnic and BBQ areas. The floating wharf provides a great fishing spot and marks the start of a coastal walk track to neighbouring Reotahi Beach.

Through heritage stone wall country to amazing beaches and spectacular seascapes and beaches, the Tutukaka Coast offers world class water activities, great walking and quality restaurants. It is the gateway to the extraordinary Poor Knights Islands Reserve and home to the Tutukaka Marina. Before reaching Tutukaka, you will find the village of Ngunguru. Across the estuary lies the pristine Ngunguru Sandspit - one of the few unmodified sandspits remaining in New Zealand with significant cultural, spiritual, historical and environmental values.
The Tutukaka Marina provides a safe haven to mariners – a fishing port, stopover for yachties and home to charter boats for diving and fishing. Spend the day in or on the water and finish off at one of the relaxed dining and bar options. Life is good.
Walks Tane Moana Walkway The Hokianga has Tane Mahuta, Tutukaka has Tane Moana - measuring over 11 metres in circumference, he is the largest kauri tree remaining on the east coast. Be prepared – this is a good four hour return walk! Ngunguru to Whangaumu Bay A picturesque walk only possible at low tide via the rocky shore, bays and bush of the Ngunguru Estuary.

Bay of Islands BAY OF ISLANDS WALKS: From the picturesque towns of Paihia, Russell & Kerikeri, you can access almost all the Bay has to offer. The Bay of Islands has always been one of New Zealand’s most popular summer destinations. Whilst boating, fishing and swimming with dolphins are some of the favourite maritime activities, the area is also rich with history & stories to discover. Kawakawa is a colourful little town that is not to be missed. It is the only town in New Zealand to boast a railway track through the centre of town - take a ride on Gabriel and stop off at the world-famous toilets. ‘Most of the islands in the Bay of Islands are classified as recreation reserves. Take a day trip!’ The elegant town of Russell, has over 200 years of stories to discover! Full of history, cafes, restaurants, galleries and colonial architecture. Take a passenger
ferry from the end of the Paihia wharf, or car ferry from Opua, which is an adventure in itself. Visit New Zealand’s oldest licensed pub and Christ Church, New Zealand’s oldest existing church, which is still scarred with musket ball holes from the 1845 fighting. Paihia is the place of friendly locals, cafes and people enjoying the life. If you get one of the Bay’s crisp winter days, take a trip out to the islands and walk one of the tracks such as Motuarohia (Roberton) and Urupukapuka Islands, which are accessible by boat only. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, it is free for Kiwis. Even if you’re not much of a history buff, you can’t help but be over-awed with the spectacular views or Ngatokimatawhaorua, the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. The cultural shows do not disappoint, as they tell the stories with modern humour and display some serious skill.
COASTAL WALKWAY A full circle walk which follows the coastline from Paihia, over beaches and bays, across mangrove boardwalks, linked by a ferry trip between Opua & Okiato and Russell & Paihia. PUKETI FOREST The Manginangina Kauri Walk (boardwalk) winds through a mature stand of kauri and swap forest. RAINBOW FALLS A well maintained track and a popular place for picnics. The walk follows a gentle incline along the river through native bush, passing by a 1930s power house.
Family Fun ACTION WORLD There is no other place like this on earth! Literally. Flying Trapeze, High Wire, Tarzan Swings, Jousting Pole, Climbing Wall, X-treme Slide, waterslide and more. Waitangi Treaty Grounds The grounds are expansive, the history abundant, and the stories mesmerising. Visiting the Treaty Grounds is a must for all New Zealanders. The Cultural show is highly recommended.
LOCALS TIP Have a drink at the Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell. Holding NZ’s oldest pub license and has been refreshing Rascals & Reprobates since 1827 it’s the best place to watch stunning sunsets in the Bay of Islands. Best cream donuts from the Kawakawa bakery (they sell out quick in the morning!) Also in Kawakawa ‘North Indian Foods’ have a huge following and serve up some of the best Indian food this side of Delhi.
QUIRKY Peircy Island, known simply as “The Hole In The Rock”. Take a boat trip through the hole, and if you are lucky enough to get a drop of water from the cave roof land on you it is supposed to give you eternal youth….

Bay of Islands Haruru Falls, just around the corner from Paihia showcases a breathtaking waterfall, ‘Haruru’ meaning “big noise.” The water falls in a horseshoe shape - very rare and quite spectacular. In the 1800s, more than 100 Maori villages lined the banks of the Haruru River which flows down to the sea at Waitangi. Maori legend says that a taniwha (water monster) lives in the lagoon below Haruru Falls. If you love history, nature, niche food products, boutique vineyards, art galleries, cafes and crafts & farmers market, you will love Kerikeri. The town also boasts
excellent sporting facilities including golf, all-weather tennis and yachting. Historical highlights of Kerikeri are the Mission House, the country’s oldest house built by John Butler in 1821, and the Missions’s Stone Store dating back to 1832. Not too far north from the Bay of Islands lies Whangaroa Harbour. The Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior rests nearby at the Cavalli Islands. Now home to reef fish, it is know world-wide as a spectacular diving spot. Bay of Islands is not just a seaside destination, there is so much more to experience.

Waitangi Treaty Grounds Activities The best way to experience the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is undoubtedly to immerse yourself in the activities on offer, starting with a Guided Tour. The enthusiastic guide meets you at the entrance to the John Scott Visitor Centre where you begin your journey back in time. New Interpretive panels through the centre and stories woven by the guide paint an historic picture, before you head outside into a lush native bush setting. Birdsong fills the air while an idyllic ocean vista provides the backdrop for the impressive sight of the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. The story of the journey of Maori ancestors
to New Zealand is revealed before you continue along a gently sloping track. The sight that is presented to you at the top of the track is one of magnificent beauty. To your right, beyond the flagstaff which signals the very spot the Treaty was signed, lie panoramic views of the Bay of Islands opening up into the expanse of the Pacific Ocean. To your left the colonial Treaty House sits among historic gardens and is comfortably flanked by an impressive carved meeting house. Your Guided Tour ends here with breath taking views and a new appreciation for New Zealand’s story.
If you love a visual display and good music, then the Cultural Performance is a must to follow on from your Guided Tour. All visitors gather outside the majestic carved meeting house where a challenge ensues - traditionally performed to determine whether visitors are coming in peace or otherwise. Arriving in peace, you are welcomed within the embrace of the meeting house. Seated in stunning carved surroundings that depict history and genealogy, the scene is set for a passionate performance by the local group Te Pitowhenua. A highenergy delivery including poi twirling,
stick throwing, heavenly harmonies and a traditional haka will leave you spellbound. Filing out of the meeting house with smiles still plastered on faces young and old, one of the day’s highlights is meeting the performers and taking photos with them. Long summer evenings in the Bay of Islands lend themselves perfectly to a hangi and concert. Your night begins at the Whare Waka Café within the Treaty Grounds, providing a casually charming setting to mix and mingle with a drink while your guide introduces your evening itinerary. You then gather around the modern earth oven (hangi) to witness the unveiling of food. Leaving the Hangi Chefs to complete meal preparations, you head to your Cultural Performance in the carved meeting house, before returning to the hangi buffet. Topping the evening off with a substantial meal of salads, vegetables, meats, stuffing, traditional breads and steamed pudding for desert, you will leave satisfied after your fun-filled taste (figuratively and quite literally), of the Maori culture. Whether you choose to see the grounds your way or join an organised activity, it is hard to put into words the feeling of historic importance, kinship, identity, culture, beauty and pride that permeates the expansive grounds at Waitangi.

The Good Life Kerikeri Kerikeri – the mere mention of the name conjures up sun-ripened tropical fruit, lush vegetation and a warmth that emanates from the locals as much as it does from the weather. The town overflows with orchards, gourmet food producers, wineries, art galleries and artists’ studios. There’s a lively café scene, a feast of quality restaurants and various boutique shops selling everything from designer clothing and home décor to Kerikeri’s own natural Skincare Range at Living Nature. Sample some of the local produce from one of the many
family owned orchards selling their wares on the side of the road or head along to the Farmers Market which happens every Sunday morning rain or shine! No visit to Kerikeri would be complete without visiting the cellar door at some of the wineries. Northland is the birthplace of New Zealand’s wine making with the first vines planted in 1819. Tropical chardonnays, spicy shiraz, peppery pinotage and vibrant cabernets typify these exciting new wines, which display ripe fruit characters, garnered from the warmest region in New Zealand.

PARADISE & MORE!
It’s no wonder that visitors to Doubtless Bay keep returning year after year. Within the confines of Doubtless Bay we have many kilometres of unspoiled sandy beaches, so we call it the Beach Paradise……
Matai Bay Arguably New Zealand’s most picturesque bay, Matai Bay is made up of two crescentshaped coves providing a sheltered and safe environment for picnics and water-borne activities for all ages. Located near the tip of Karikari Peninsula Matai could easily be mistaken for a tropical paradise. A wellequipped DOC campground is also located just metres from the beach. Tokerau Beach Stretching 18kms around the western side of Doubtless Bay with vehicle access, you can pack all you need for a day’s entertainment and find a quiet secluded spot. It’s a surfcaster’s dream. Bring your kayak, kite or just a beach towel and a picnic. The small Tokerau settlement consists mainly of holiday homes and runs along part of the beach. Here you can find a camping ground, pitch & putt golf and just a few minutes drive to the Whatuwhiwhi shops for an ice cream, or onwards to a five-star resort and golf course.
www.doubtlessb sbay.co.nz
Taipa Bay Combining beach frontage with a river estuary and a small township with all the facilities you need for the perfect holiday, The children can splash in the shallows, Surfers can enjoy the gentle swells while trailerboaties have a nearby ramp facility with heaps of parking. Historical Taipa also offers plenty of holiday and resort accommodation. Sounds like the typical Kiwi summer holiday and it is.
Cable Bay Pretty in Pink. The unique pinkish-hued sandy beach is fringed with rock pools and a small lagoon. An adventure playground for the little ones made just that little bit more heavenly by the attraction of a dairy providing a huge range of ice creams. Surf casting is also popular off the rocky outcrops and plenty of accommodation just metres away. Coopers Beach Fringed with mature Pohutakawas, Coopers Beach provides 2kms of safe swimming, children’s playgrounds, historical pa sites and a well-equipped shopping centre offering everything you will need for a great holiday. There are motels and home stays as well as many private residences available for rent catering for all needs. The Coopers Beach Bowling and Tennis Clubs welcome visitors and you are just minutes from historical Mangonui. HiHi Beach Two for the price of one! Situated on a peninsula with Doubtless Bay on one side and the sheltered Mangonui Harbour on the other. Come and enjoy the awesome sunsets, go fishing or water skiing or maybe just relax on yet another safe Far North Beach. Taupo Bay Just a short drive down SH10 from Mangonui turn left and head for yet more white sands and crystal clear waters. Taupo Bay also offers one of the region’s best surfing breaks. As you would expect, it’s also great for fishing, diving and all other water-borne sports.
MANGONUI WATERFRONT FESTIVAL Aptly named “Last of the Summer Wine” the 2015 Mangonui Waterfront Festival will be held on Saturday 28th March. In just 3 short years this event has quickly become a major focal point for everything that’s good about the Far North. Vendors of local produce, entertainers, members of the public and everybody who’s been involved all agree that the Festival is a super event thanks to a wonderful location and a professional approach by the organizers. It attracts 4,000 plus visitors over the course of the day, and keeps them entertained with a variety of activities for both young and old. There’s a huge array of interesting merchandise along with music, dancing, great food and refreshments. Local Food, Wine, Art & Activities Producers and exhibitors are again invited to contact the DBPI to book a space at the Festival. The Waterfront Drive being closed from 10am (the Festival starts at noon) until 6pm and patrons will be able to browse and sample a unique selection of local Far North-sourced goods. Vendors from further afield, especially those with a unique offering will also be considered, and are invited to send an expression of interest. The organizers expect at least 80 stalls showing artworks, food produce and wines from the many growers and artisans of the Far North. Enjoy the seaside ambience of one of New Zealand’s most picturesque harbourside fishing villages. And in addition to the
selection of temporary stalls lining the waterfront, the local bars, restaurants, craft shops and food retailers will open their doors and join the market-day festivities. With the stretch of road being closed to traffic, there is plenty of room for people of all ages to wander at their leisure. Plenty of Entertainment for the Family For just $5.00 per adult and a gold–coin admission for school-age children (infants free), visitors can browse among the goods on display while being entertained by a variety of acts from noon until 6pm. There will be bouncy castles, face painting and circus skills on display for the little ones, and for those more mature folk looking for a challenge can enter the Tug-O-War or even try their hand at Paddleboard racing. The central stage will provide constant entertainment throughout the afternoon with a selection of bands providing a mixture of musical styles interspersed with demonstrations and of course quick-fire raffles. A second stage is also planned so that patrons can sit and relax while listening to some smooth jazz or soft rock. Free Car Parking & Shuttle Services Car parking is free at Far North ITM and a complimentary shuttle service will run continually throughout the day ferrying visitors to and from their vehicles. Kauri Coast and Hokianga on’
Home to ancient kauri forests, wild windswept harbours, giant sand dunes, and 153 shipwreck sites. The first glimpse of the Hokianga as you approach is overwhelming, with 500 metre high golden sand dunes, you wonder where this oasis appeared from. Dotted with little white churches (which are characteristic of the north), picturesque old buildings and horses grazing in the quiet countryside. You drive past young local kids, sometimes three-a-horse & riding barebakc. Even though life has a slower pace in the Hokianga, something known as ‘Hokianga time’ you will find there are many things to do.
‘Northland’s Koutu Boulders are one of Hokianga’s better kept secrets’. The winter is perfect for long broody walks along the beach, followed by nights beside the fire sipping wine and feasting on fresh local crayfish (at the Copthorne Hokianga). A walk through the Waipoua Forest is enjoyable even on a gloomy day, as it is a rainforest it only adds to the experience (guided night walks are a buzz. Pay your respects to the world’s largest and oldest kauri trees).
Waipoua Lodge wins prestigious award
Waipoua Lodge has been honoured as one of Fodor’s 2014 Top 100 Hotels in the World, being one of only two hotels in New Zealand to have been recognised. Fodors is one of the world’s leading travel guides, used extensively by travellers around the globe and published online and in print by Random House. Waipoua Lodge is one of 25 Small Hotels “At these intimate hotels, all with fewer than 50 guest rooms, expect personalised attention and one-of-a-kind experiences”, plus from the Top 100, they are one of only 25 who have also been chosen for the Reader’s Choice Award.

The Kauri Museum – Real New Zealand Heritage Discover the secrets of New Zealand’s ancient living giants - the kauri– one of the largest and oldest trees in the world. The award- winning Kauri Museum specializes in the history and the legacy left behind by our Kauri Forests; specifically the strong durable timber and the highly sought after Kauri Gum. Explore the many displays and galleries inside the museum, from the magnificent collection of antique kauri furniture to the operational machinery wing which includes the country’s earliest tractor and a turning steam sawmill. Be amazed by the collection of Kauri Gum which has been attracting settlers to Northland since the late 1800’s. Wander through the two-storey life-sized replica boarding house, a pioneer school and the historic Matakohe post and telegraph office. If you are looking for an uplifting and motivational tale of a forefather, whose contributions shaped the country that we know today, come and learn from the man who gets things done “Joseph Gordon Coates” . To commemorate the Centenary of WW1 in 2014, The Kauri Museum will open a special exhibition
dedicated to the story of Matakohe’s most famous soldier. This is a unique story of a local farm boy and a confirmed patriot, who served in World War One and went on to become the Prime Minister of New Zealand. Whilst called the “Man from Matakohe” by parliamentary colleagues he was also referred to as “the Man who gets things done” by the voting public. The “Man from Matakohe” exhibition opens at The Kauri Museum on Friday 17th October 2014. The exhibition will be showcasing memorabilia from The Kauri Museum’s own collection, as well as artefacts on loan from the Ruatuna homestead collection, property of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. The Kauri Museum is a must-see for visitors and locals alike. Only a 1.45-hour drive from Auckland and 1 hour from Whangarei, the museum makes for a great day-trip or destination on your Northland weekend get-away.
